No activities are planned for the Twenty-Seventh SPJST Convention, scheduled for June 10-13 at the Arlington Convention Center, on Monday night.

The game begins at 7:35 p.m. and the Ballpark is walking distance from the

Banquet Tickets Available

Reservations for the Tuesday night, June 11 Convention Banquet are currently being accepted. The menu consists of garden green salad with buttermilk and vinegarette dressing, roasted prime rib of beef, baked potato with butter and sour cream, steamed julienne vegetables, french chocolate layer cake, 14K-carrot cake, fresh rolls and butter, iced tea and coffee.

Banquet entertainment will include speaker Suzie Humphreys of Dallas and the Mr. and Miss SPJST Contest.

Banquet tickets are $20 per person.

Reservations can be made by sending your check or money order to: Supreme Lodge (SPJST) P.O. Tickets to the Convention banquet will be distributed at registration for the Convention.

Snacks consisting of Danish muffins, breakfast breads, kolaches, and juice/coffee will be available from 7 to 9 a.m. on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday mornings.

The noon meals on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday will he available at the concession stand in the convention center. Food selections will include barbecue-on-bun, deli platter (sandwich, chips, potato salad or coleslaw), cheeseburger; baked potato bar, and chef's salad.

SPJST Convention

"Howdy Party" Set to Welcome Delegates to Twenty-Seventh Convention Lodges 92, 154, 180 and 183 are excited and pleased to welcome you to our home. The XXVII SPJST Convention in Arlington has been in the planning stages for three years and we are pleased to welcome each delegate and our Supreme Lodge members to a "Howdy Party."

The party will take place on Sunday, June 9, at Lodge 92, Fort Worth, located at 3316 Roberts Cut-Off Road in Fort Worth. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m.

Scheduled activities include entertainment by the Czech Concert Orchestra under the direction of Sid Pokladnik from 6 - 9 p.m. A delicious barbecue dinner with all the trimmings will be catered by Riscky's Bar-B-Q from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.

The event is scheduled to conclude at 9:30 p.m.

The event is free to delegates, directors and Supreme Lodge Officers. There will be a $5 per person charge for the spouse/guest of a delegate.

Buses will be provided for those delegates who do not wish to drive. Two

buses will leave from the Marriott Arlington at 5 p.m. Two buses will also depart from the Marriott Courtyard at 5 p.m. A fifth bus will depart from the LaQuinta - Arlington at 5 p.m.

It is very important that we know how many delegates and guests will be attending'the "Howdy Party" and riding the buses. State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Frank Klinkovsky will be happy to take your reservations for the "Howdy Party" and bus ride. He may be reached at the SPJST Home Office at 1 (800) 727 - 7578. Lodge 183, Arlington to Host Fraternal Workshop on May 22 The fraternal workshop will he held on Wednesday, May 22, 1996, at the SPJST lodge hall in Arlington. The workshop will cover volunteer services, SPJST membership benefits and the lodge incentive program.

Lodge officers, all members and their spouses or Lodge 183, Arlington and surrounding lodges—lodges 130 and 84 from Dallas, lodges 92 and 154 from Fort Worth, and Lodge 180, Burleson—are invited to attend.

We will begin with a sandwich meal at 6:30 p.m. with the workshop beginning at 7 p.m.

The lodge hall is located at 3100 Pleasant Valley Lane. The phone number is (817) 465-8538. Coming in from the Fort Worth area, take 1-20 East and exit on Cooper Street. Take a left and go over 1-20 and continue north on Cooper Street

Michael Morris Announces Candidacy for Editor Dear SPJST Members, For those of you who don't know me, my name is Michael Morris. I am a lifelong member of District Two's Lodge 47, Seaton, and I have lived in the Temple area all of my 26 years. It is with deep consideration that I have decided to seek the office of Editor in the upcoming 1996 convention.

As many of you have witnessed, I was quite active in the very strong Lodge 47 Youth Club. I held offices at many levels including sergeant-at-arms, vice president, and president. In 1986, I successfully competed for District Two King and culminated that year with garnering the State King title. I competed again for District Two in 1992 for District Mr. SPJST. I again was successful and was awarded the distinct honor of competing at the 1992 Convention for State Mr. SPJST. After winning this title, and holding it for four years, I must sadly relinquish my "crown" at the upcoming convention. Also, during my years as a youth club member, I spent many Saturday nights working in the Lodge 47 kitchen—earning points and having a ball cooking those great burgers! I'd like to add, many of my activities were done voluntarily, and I did not wait to be asked or appointed to a committee. I took great pleasure in participating in our annual Christmas party activities—even getting to play Santa once in one of the many plays we staged! I am currently involved in providing musical entertainment at the lodge's annual spring picnic—which I have done for the last five years. I have been master of ceremonies for many District and State Royalty/YAD competitions and I have even been a judge for the same at the district level.

I have traveled all over the State of Texas and I feel I have a strong working knowledge of the structure of the society—at the local, district and state levels I've been there!

I am currently employed by the City of Temple, where I have worked for five years. I attend Temple College where I am very active in their fine music department. I am an acco plished musician, winning o at y awards in solo and group ompetitions. I am also involved in orgr',Zcd snorts such as softhaii and tennis and I enjoy a little fishing and golf when n find the time.

The Vestnik has a long-standing reputation and tradition of excellence, which I am fully committed to upholding. As Editor, I feel that my principal duty is to edit the contents of the Vestnik, no more—no less . . . unless the delegates assign the Editor additional duties. I will also concentrate my efforts in making the Vestnik more enjoyable and informative and would welcome this task, as I have any other, with a sense of purpose and vigor.

There are other areas of the editor's working environment which are also very important—his or her relationship with the Supreme Lodge body, Publication Committee, and fellow employees. I also took the time, and made the effort, to attend two sessions of Czech language classes both sponsored

by Lodge 47—the first taught by Slovakian native and close friend Martin Valko, and the latter taught by former SPJST Editor and Supreme Lodge President, my father, Nick A. Morris.

District Two Reports on Spring Meeting Hosted by Lodge 18, Elgin March 17, 1996 District Two Spring Meeting was called to order by Arleen Mayeux on Sunday, March 17, 1996. at Lodge 18, Elgin. Members were led in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Kathy Fritz read the names of the deceased members and youth club-members lit candles for each lodge.

Dolly Hajda, President of Lodge 18, Elgin, welcomed all to the meeting and hope they enjoyed the hospitality of Lodge 18. She recognized members of.

Patsy Koslovsky, District Youth Counselor, introduced the new elected officers of the District Youth Club. Dates are being considered. Patsy recognized the District Youth Leaders and Scott Hudson of Lodge 24, Cyclone who won first place in the t-shirt contest.

Ruth Hanusch read the names of the Age 96, 75-year, and 50-year members.

He also recognized Gene McBride, State Field Manager, and his wife, Frances; Frank Klinkovsky, State Fraternal Activities Coordinator, and his wife, Irma; Dan Balusek, Nursing Home Director, and his wife, Ann; and President Howard Leshikar, and his wife, Mary. He extended congratulations to the insurance sales force and the lodges on the 1995 Incentive Program. He told everyone to mark their calendars for the 100th SPJST Anniversary on July 11-13, 1997, in Temple. The Insurance and Finance Committees are vacant and those parties

who are interested in running for those positions will be voted on at the convention. oward Leshikar recognized Willie Kohutek who will not be running for District Two 'Director at the convention and praised him for a job well done. The members of District Two gave Willie and Adeline a standing ovation. Willie served as director from 1984 to 1996.

Arleen Mayeux was also given a standing ovation for the good job she did as District Two President and Finance Committee. Howard presented Carol Tallas with three checks from the Supreme Lodge.

Kathy Fritz recognized the Fraternalist of the Year from each lodge in District Two. The State Fraternalist was also recognized. Kathy recognized the lodges for the 1995 Incentive Awards:

Representing District Two at the convention as Miss SPJST is Allyson Holman of Lodge 187, Round Rock. Allyson is the daughter of Bill and Sharon Holman. A parade of Little Miss and Mr. was enjoyed by the participants and the audience.

Howard Leshikar installed the district officers and youth officers.

The meeting was adjourned and a meal was served by Lodge 18, Elgin.

Arleen asked if any members who were running for the District Two Director position to speak to the members. Edwin Adamek of Lodge 29, Taylor and Bob Miracle of Lodge 200, Bruceville-Eddy asked for the support of the delegates at the convention.

Motion was made and seconded that we no longer have the position of Second Vice President. Motion carried.

The Texas Czech Beseda Dancers try to uphold the traditions of our forefathers by performing authentic dances from the Czech Republic and Slovakia. We perform at schools, nursing homes, the Texas Folklife Festival, and many other festivals.

I would appreciate any information on acquiring a tape or record of this Beseda.

I See It:

In Response to the Dorothy Pflughaupt Letter I read, with much concern, Dorothy Pflughaupt's article published in the "Readers Write" column of the May 1, 1996, Vestnik. From time to time, I have heard that some of our members favored converting the SPJST into a stock company, but I thought it was more conversation than intent. From the tone of Sister Dorothy's article, I get the feeling that there is more to this than meets the average member's eye.

First of all, let me make one thing perfectly clear. It is possible and probable that a stock company could and would generate more revenue for the SPJST, but at what cost? When I ask, "at what cost?" I am referring to more than dollars and cents. I, for one, do not want our membership to have to bear that cost. If you do not know what cost or costs I am talking about, re-read Dorothy Ptlughaupt's article in the May 1,1996, Vestnik, and re-read it carefully.

It seems to me that one of the potentially dangerous and very destructive things that has crept into our fraternity is "profit". We do not have to make a "profit" to exist, however, we must raise and collect "revenue" in order for us, the SPJST, to be able and continue to be able to fulfill our goals, objectives, and obligations. There is a lot of difference between "raising and collecting revenue" and "making a profit." We must have money to operate, and we must have money to set aside in "reserve" in order for us to be able to fulfill our obligations. There is no question that we must manage our business affairs wisely and prudently. There is also no question that our Supreme Lodge officers and other employees must be appropriately compensated for their work and efforts.

As far as titles and duties of the Supreme Lodge officers are concerned, I feel that updating and modernizing them will have no adverse effect upon the day-to-day operation of the SPJST. Remember, it is the titles of the officers

of any organization that establish its prestige among its peers. As a rule, the change of titles does not affect the duties of a particular job slot. (A rose by any other name would still smell the same.

Or, call him a sanitation engineer or a janitor, he still has to clean up the toilet, but if you call him a sanitation engineer he feels better about it.) So you see, an up-to-date or modern job title is a form of compensation that costs us nothing.

Now to the crux of the whole thing, we, the membership, together with the elected and appointed officers and employees must decide what the future of the SPJST will be. What are, or should be, our goals and objectives?

What is our motivation? And, what is the reason for our existence? We must determine if our intended purpose will be to continue to provide affordable life insurance and other related services to our members, or if our intended purpose will be to sell life insurance and provide other services in order to make money.

In my way of thinking, we need to generate more revenue to be able to provide better financial security and more services to our members, and that we should not seek to generate revenue merely to make a profit and aggrandize assets, nor to provide luxuries for a select few.

Yes, things and services are expensive, and they are getting more expensive by the minute; yes, we need to generate more revenue just to keep our status quo; yes, we need to make some economies in our day-to-day operation, but we cannot let that impair the vision of our founding fathers, and we cannot let it impair our vision for the future, nor can we let it diminish our ability to accommodate the needs of our members.

We cannot approach the future with a "pie in the sky by and by" philosophy, we must approach the future and meet its challenges with a business-like attitude and from a benevolent and fraternal perspective. We must not let commercialism replace fraternalism in our organization. Believe me, turning the SPJST into a stock company is not the answer, nor is it the right approach.

49, Rowena Tarok Tournament This Saturday, May 18 Lodge

Lodge 49, Rowena is hosting a tarok tournament on May 18, 1996, beginning at 9:15 a.m. at the Rowena SPJST Lodge Hall. Everyone is invited. SPJST membership is not required. Come out to the country for a big day of taroks. We need your attendance so that we may continue this annual event.

If you arrive on Friday, be sure to come to the lodge hall on Friday night to get your practice for the Saturday game.

Rowena is located on Highway 67 between San Angelo and Ballinger. The SPJST hall is on the east side of Rowena on Farm Road 2133.

Corpus Christi to Host Mother's Day Dinner Our lodge was thrilled to have 84 people in attendance on Sunday, April 21 for our Incentive Awards Dinner for all lodge members and perspective members. The monthly meeting following the dinner which was enjoyed by all. A moment of silence was observed for departed member Joe T. Sijansky. Sister Glenda Elzner, FAC handed out volunteer work records and reminded everyone of the importance of reporting volunteer hours.

A special guest, Brother Bob Bayer, District Seven Director, spoke of SPJST's 100-year anniversary in 1997 and the convention in June. He noted that our 1995 Fraternalist of the Year, Jerry Elzner, and his daughter, Marsha have been selected as volunteers for the summer Olympics (Jerry, in sports information, and Marsha, as a nurse).

Our field representative, Jim Wiest, spoke next about the types of insurance available and suggested that all those present contact their sales representatives and guide them to a person who may need insurance. Several 50-year pins were presented by Brother Bob Bayer, Jerry Elzner, and Sister Glenda Elzner. A picture and listing of those receiving pins will follow soon.

Under old business, President Jerry Elzner updated everyone on our fund raiser in late November with the Veselanka band from the Czech Republic.

81, Needville Reports on April Meeting

Lodge

On a windy springtime Sunday, Lodge 81, Needville met for their monthly meeting at the lodge hall.

The agenda for the day followed the usual schedule at 12 noon. Delicious baked and fried chicken and sausage were served along with all of the delicious vegetables, salads, and desserts that the kind ladies of the lodge brought.

Thanks, ladies, and also thanks to President Macha for picking up the chicken. President Macha offered the meal blessing.

At 1 p.m., the meeting was called to order by the president. Kristi Jablonski led the group in saying the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. All officers were present except Vice President Vincent Newman.

Before the business meeting started, our District Five Director Louis Hanus spoke to us. He briefed us on the upcoming SPJST convention. Louis told us about a new lodge. It is located in Mexia, Texas. Congratulations and good luck to those fine people. Louis praised Lodge 81 for their hard work and many accomplishments. Louis was then excused so that he could fulfill his other commitments for the afternoon. Thanks for coming by, Louis. We look forward to seeing you at our next meeting.

The business meeting then resumed.

Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes for our March meeting. They were approved as read. In the correspondence department, Mary read a thank-you note from the Louis Zapalac family. Treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendall read her report which was accepted as read. Special Fund Chairman Gilbert Walzel informed us of the hall rental bookings for the next four weeks. He then gave his report which was accepted as presented.

Two deaths were reported since our last meeting. They include Louis Zapalas of Richmond and Sadie Walzer of Orchard, Texas. Sympathy goes out to each of these families. Also Lodge 81 would like to extend their sympathy and love to Jeanette Barnes upon the loss of her husband, Norman. Jeanette is a member of Lodge 81.

The sick list includes the names of Jerry Blinka, Vic Werner, Emil Pollock, and Vera Mae Gray. Get-well wishes are being sent to each of you and to any other members who may be ill.

Kaitlin Elizabeth Claghorn is the newest member added to the SPJST membership list. She is the great-granddaughter of Jerry and Frances Kubala.

(Ha! Ha!) President Macha reported that the article about our lodge winning the incentive award was published in the Gulf Coast Tribune and the Herald Coaster. There was no charge by either paper for printing the article. Lodge 81 would like to express their deepest thanks to the papers for doing this favor for us. It is appreciated.

Sister Willie Mae Kuykendall informed us that she will not be able to attend the SPJST convention as one of our delegates due to medical reasons. We are sorry to hear this and we hope everything will turn out OK for you. May God be with you.

Darlene Blinka, one of our substitute delegates, will replace Willie Mae. We are happy to have Darlene join our group as a delegate to represent Lodge 81.

Jason Vallet, son of Gilbert and Corlis Vallet and grandson of Gilbert and Benita Walzel, placed third in state in power lifting. Congratulations, Jason. Jason is a

senior at Needville High School and a member of Lodge 81.

There were 38 members and guests present at the meeting. We were happy that each of you came out and we hope more people can attend our May meeting.

We will have a belated Mother's Day gift for some lucky mother. Chicken fried steak will be on the menu. Ladies, we need your help again. Please bring a vegetable or salad and dessert. It will be appreciated.

Lodge 84, Dallas Member Anne Staglik Honored on 80th Birthday On Sunday, March 24, 1996, Anne Staglik of Lodge 84, Dallas, celebrated her 80th birthday with a large group of her family and friends. The family reunion and birthday buffet lunch given by her two daughters and their spouses, Bobbie Anne and John Bickle and Betty and James Grier, was hosted at the Grier's home in Dallas.

Anne's sister, Mary Sill, and her brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Olga Duron, helped to celebrate the occasion. To make the day even more special, all four of her grandsons, Dr. John W. Bickle, Jr., Scott Bickle, Jason Grier, and Jeffrey Grier, along with their wives or girl-

friends, and her great-grandchildren came from as far away as Greenville, North Carolina, Phoenix, Arizona, College Station, Texas, and Austin, Texas.

Cousins, nieces, nephews, and greatnieces and great-nephews attended the party as well.

After lunch, we enjoyed birthday cake, kolaches, and coffee. The rest of the afternoon was spent visiting and catching up on all the latest family news.

135, Ennis Member Stephen M. Chtidej Nominated for Emmy Award Lodge

Stephen M. Chudej, son of Ennisites Jerry and Agnes Chudej, has been nominated for an Emmy Award for his work as a costume designer. His series, "Wishbone," is broadcast locally on PBS affiliate Channel 13. For readers not familiar with "Wishbone," each episode revolves around a story-telling dog that is reminded of classic works of literature by events happening in his modern-day neighborhood.

As costume designer, Mr. Chudej is responsible for the entire "look" of the characters played in the series. By researching period clothes he is able to reconstruct authentic costumes and uniforms for periods and places as diverse as Israel in 1000 B.C. to France to England in the 1890s.

This is Mr. Chudej's second nomination for costume design and costuming.

In 1989, he won a Primetime Emmy for best costuming for "Pancho Barnes" starring Valerie Bertinelli.

Also, a big thanks to Elsie Brdecka for providing us with a guessing game. She fixed up an Easter bunny filled with assorted candies. Willie Mae Kuykendall won the prize by guessing the exact number of candies that were in the bunny which was 127.

Thanks to Darlene Blinka, Benita Walzel, and Kristi Jablonski for helping with the door prizes. Thanks also to the Adolph Machas for donating six boxes of get-well and Christmas cards.

In a couple of weeks school will he out. It is our hope that everyone exercises safety during this time. Be careful and have a fun-filled summer.

Christi Circle of Women Reports on April Meeting Corpus

There were 29 members including Honorary Member Jerry Elzner and new member Edna Voldan at our May 2 meeting. Edna moved to Corpus Christi from

He designed the costumes for "Shakes the Clown," "Samantha," and others. His made-forTV design credits include "A Promise to Caroline" and soon to be aired "The People Next Door."

Mr. Chudej will attend the Daytime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles on May 18 with his wife, Dr. Delia Hejny, and "Wishbone" producers Rick Duffield and Betty Buckley.

Stephen, his wife, their daughter Galey, and Stephen's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Chudej, are all members of Lodge 135, Ennis.

—SPJSTTemple last August and being an SPJST member, she had read of our group in the Vestnik. She had attended the April meeting of Lodge 79 and was told we would be happy to have her join the Krouzek.

She fit right in with the other members and seemed to enjoy our meeting as much as we do.

Our guest was Betty Jurica's daughter, Dorothy Kline, who has lived in Ohio for many years. It is always a pleasure to see the daughters of fellow members when they return to Corpus Christi for a visit. I recall the times I visited the Dallas Krouzek with my grandmother, Dolfi Stransky, and how great it was to see all of her friends whom I had known from birth.

We were all glad to have Rose Huff, Frances Kosarek, and Ella Simcik back with us. We were unaware that Frances was hospitalized with pneumonia for a week, but had missed her at our meetings.

We are happy all three are doing better and now just need Georgia Ann Kubala to regain enough strength to rejoin us.

Hopefully in June she will be with us.

A thank-you card from Norma Baker was received thanking us for the pot plant delivered for her father's funeral. Pauline Novosad said Albina Bartos sent her thanks for her individually signed birthday card.

Two post cards were received a month after being mailed to us from Poland and the Czech Republic by Jerry and Marsha Elzner and Evelyn Papasan. Post cards seem to get lost in the shuffle when mailed from Europe, but we were happy to receive them anyway.

We had a bit of fun kidding Dorothy McCoy for appearing in the April 16 issue of National Enquirer. Seems they heard of a squabble at the Lindale Recreational Center between couples dancers and line dancers and sent a reporter to do a story. Dorothy said it was the first time she had attended the senior citizens' dance and just happened to be at the end of the line dancers closest to the photographer. The argument had already been solved by marking off the floor separating the two groups. The National Enquirer must be hard up for sensational stories, but at least we all had a good laugh, even Dorothy, who is a good sport.

10/VkSTNIK—Wednesday, May 15, 1996 trip to Progresso for our scrapbook. He was not only our driver, but also guide, translator, and photographer. He posed in one picture behind a stack of sombreros with Leona Matula and Anita Regmund, each of them wearing a big sombrero.

It's priceless. They didn't buy any but Leona did purchase a white cowboy straw hat for $4. There were 15 of us packed in the van and a good time was had by all. Jerry led us in singing a few good old Czech songs along the way.

Yes, he was our song leader, too. We all appreciate the many things he does for our group.

Della Elzner told us of her ten-day tour of Italy, Paris, Greece, and an extra few days-in Prague. Carrie Veselka told of her ten-day bus tour highlighted by viewing the cherry blossoms in Washington, D.C. They both enjoy traveling.

Jerry Elzner told us he has been accepted as a volunteer translator at the Olympics along with daughter Marsha McDougal, an RN, who was assigned to First Aid. Milly will be going also, but only as an observer. It should be a great

experience for them.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Sophie Snapka and new member Edna Voldan.

Door prizes consisting of a bag of valley onions, pickled beets, pickles and beautiful ivy plants were given out 10 lucky winners. It was a very enjoyable meeting and we look forward to the next one on June 6.

Circle of Czech Women Reports on April Meeting

Our meeting was called to order by President Bertha Podhrasky. Alice Roberts led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and we remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of Mrs.

Lodge 66, Waco takes top honors in SPJST State "42" Domino Tournament Lodge 29, Taylor was the site for the Twelfth Annual State "42" Domino Tournament. There were 78 enthusiastic players from 12 lodges representing many parts of the state.

Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar welcomed the players and wished them all a "good day of fellowship. ' and thanked everyone for their participation. District Seven Director Bob Bayer was recognized for being present.

District Director Bob Bayer also played in the tournament.

After four games were played, a delicious noon meal was served by Lodge 29, Taylor. After the meal, four more games were played by everyone and we had a first place winning team and a tie for second and third place. We also had a six-way tie for fourth and fifth place.

The playoffs started and upon completion of the playoffs, the results were: First Place Team Weldon Galler and Thomas Galler Lodge 66, Waco Second Place Team Lydia Jansen and Lillie Krueger Lodge 29, Taylor Third Place Team John Paul Chervenka and Kenneth Marek Lodge 24, Cyclone

Correspondence, read by Evelyn Trojacek, included a letter from Retta Chandler from Texas Czech Ancestors.

Announcements The Culture Society met and discussed writing more letters to the State Fair of Texas. Bertha said that the various ethnic groups have formed Texas Cultural Partnership in response to the State Fair's decision of no ethnic days this year. Its goal is to resurrect ethnic days in one form or another. It is suggested that everyone write to the Editorial Department of the Dallas Morning News stating their disappointment of the Fair's decision to not have any ethnic days at the fair this year.

Faye Wright is going to write a letter to the Editorial Department of the Dallas Morning News stating the Krouzek's disappointment in the Fair's decision of not having a Czech Day at the Fair. The next meeting of the Czech Culture Society is June 24, 1996, at SPJST Lodge 84 at 7:30 p.m.

The 1996 winners of the lodge plaque for winning the most games was Lodge 29, Taylor. Lodge 29 had nine teams playing and their competing lodges were Lodge 13, Dime Box and Lodge 107, Floresville with each lodge having six teams. We appreciate the efforts of all the lodges. We were very happy to have competition from so many lodges.

My sincere thanks to all who have taken the time to play and support this. tournament. The fun and fraternalism was enjoyed by all players. Everyone seemed to be in a good mood and enjoyed the day of fellowship. Thank you to Lodge 29 and especially the kitchen crew and all the members for an outstanding job in hosting the tournament.

New Business We discussed the letter from Retta Chandler of Texas Czech Culture. She was asking for a suggestion for a site for a Czech museum. We discussed this and we came up with the idea that we think that the fairgrounds of the State Fair of Texas in Dallas would be a perfect spot.

The Fourth of July Picnic was discussed and we voted not to have it this year.

We discussed the money-making project and we decided to have one person bring a present and everyone buy chances and the winner would bring the present for next month.

News of Members Joy and Rudy Malik visited Bertha Malik and while here they also visited Yvonne (Bertha's daughter) and grandson Neil. Rudy is a policeman at Irvine, California.

Mary Sebestik is in the hospital with a broken hip and she is to have surgery.

Lillian Moran is in the hospital.

Helen Oates said Arnold Vrla has been moved to Heritage Forest Lane at 9009 Forest Lane, Room 309 in Dallas, Texas 75243. He would like to hear from his friends.

The Runnels, Concho, and Tom Green Counties Czech Heritage Society will hold its second quarterly meeting in the SPJST Hall in Rowena, Sunday, May 19, 1996, at 2:30 p.m.

All members of SPJST District Four are invited to this important meeting to help finalize plans for a Czech Fest on Saturday, October 26, in Rowena at the SPJST Lodge 49, Rowena hall.

Stanley Broz, SPJST District Four Director, and Louis Kokes, president of the Concho Valley Czech Heritage Society, request your assistance to make the festival a success.

of Czech Ancestry (T.O.C.A®) Seeks to Establish Cultural Center Texans

Texans of Czech Ancestry (T.O.C.A ), a non-profit corporation founded in 1986 that facilitates communication and cooperation among Czech-founded organizations in Texas was reactivated in December, 1995. Its primary purpose is to preserve and promote the Czech language, culture and heritage and to undertake appropriate projects and activities which will benefit Czech Texans. New officers for 1996 are: Retta Chandler of DeSoto, President; Elo Goerig of LaGrange, Vice President; Arnold Pechal of Temple, Treasurer; and Carolyn Meiners of LaGrange, Secretary.

T.O.C.A. has now undertaken the exciting project of developing a state Czech cultural center, hopefully to be located in Central Texas in the area where the majority of Czech immigrants first settled. The idea for a library, archive and museum was first conceived by the executive committee of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas. That organization asked that T.O.C.A. be reactivated, so that it could take the responsibility of uniting all Texas Czech organizations to cooperatively develop a state facility.

The Czech Heritage Society has also pledged $5,000 towards the fund-raising efforts.

The plans for a state facility have now expanded to include meeting rooms, an auditorium-or ballroom, a bookstore and gift shop, and a picnic area for family reunions. Another amenity would include a visitor-information center that would serve as a centralized source of information on all Czech activities, festivals and -historical sites. A living history museum with a Czech homestead and a recreation of an early Czech-Texan village would be the focal points of an annual heritage festival during Czech Heritage Week where all of the Czech organizations of Texas could unite to reenact the many traditions, crafts and skills associated with our beautiful Czech heritage.

Planning committees have met and are discussing the type of facility needed to address the various aspects of our heritage and the best location to accommodate this facility. Consideration is also being given to funding and the existing collections of Czech artifacts and research materials.

Membership in T.O.C.A. now includes nine incorporated Czech organizations with two voting representatives each and 38 non-voting associate members. The Czech organizations that are members at this time are: the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST), Catholic Union of Texas (KJT), Czech Ex-Students Association of Texas (CESAT), Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT), Czech Heritage Society of Texas, Czech Heritage Society—Bexar County Chapter, Czech Heritage SocietyTravis-Williamson Counties Chapter, Farmers Mutual Protective Association of Texas (RVOS), and the American Sokol Organization Southern District.

Any individual can become an associate member; belonging to other Czech organizations is not a requirement for membership. Although associate members cannot vote, they can voice their opinions about issues. Being interested in preserving the Czech heritage and making a commitment to support the development of a state cultural center should be priorities for members.

TO.C.A. would like to receive additional input from their Czech organizations and individuals with their suggestions about what should be included in the facility. Also, if there are any communities in Central Texas with a large Czech population that would like to present their rationale for being considered as a possible location for the facility, they should notify Retta Chandler, T.O.C.A. The acquisition of land for this facility is a priority; the ideal solution would he to have it donated or offered for a reasonable price. The establishment of this facility on land owned by a Czech family would he a wonderful honor to the memory of one's ancestors.

There are approximately one million persons of Czech descent in Texas. If everyone contributed at least $5 towards developing a state cultural center, our dream could become a reality. We need to adapt the "can do" spirit of our immigrant forefathers who sacrificed so much in search of freedom and land and a new

12/VESTNIK—Wednesday, May 15, 1996 life in Texas. No obstacles or hardships stopped their diligent efforts that resulted in our having unlimited opportunities available to us, their descendants. Our forefathers deserve to be remembered for all of their contributions as Czech Texans, for teaching us to cherish our Czech traditions, and for instilling in us the values that are innately Czech. What better way than to erect a state-of the artcultural center that will perpetuate our heritage into the next century.

This will be a monumental task that will require the full support of every Czech Texan. Hopefully, a precedent will be set whereby past differences can be set aside, and hands and hearts can be joined to leave a legacy for future generations that will enable them to learn about and appreciate their Czech heritage.

T.O.C.A. needs you! We need your ideas and your support! The next meeting will be held on Saturday, May 18, 1996, at the RVOS State Headquarters in Temple, Texas at 10 a.m. If you are interested in helping to create a facility that will "tell our story", please try to attend.

Cemetery Tabernacle Completed

The Seaton Cemetery Association is pleased to announce the completion of the tabernacle. The fund drive is on until October, 1996. This tabernacle can be used by anyone having a burial in the Seaton Cemetery without any cost.

We plan to plant grass and perhaps enhance the appearance with shrubs and flowers.

Any contributions of $200 or more will qualify to have one's name inscribed on a granite plaque at the tabernacle.

Conversation Czech I CSC 4-322-040 is being offered for the student with little or no background in the Czech language who wants to learn to communicate in everyday Czech. Emphasis is on vocabulary, pronunciation and beginning conversation. No prerequisite is required.

The class meets from 7:30 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays for a sevenweek period from June 4 through July 23, a total of 21 hours. Registration it at the ACC Ad. Building in Highland Mall.

Expressions of Sympathy Resolution of Sympathy We, the members of Lodge 172, Rozkvet, Pasadena, wish to express our deepest and sincere sympathy to the family of our departed lodge member,

VICTOR A. PETER of Pasadena, Texas, who passed away on March 9, 1996, in the Methodist Hospital in Houston.

Mr. Peter was a member of St. Hyacinth Catholic Church in Deer Park, Texas, and one of the founders of SPJST Lodge 172 in 1969. Victo served as president for six years. He was also the past Victor Peter president of District Five. He was one of the founders of the Czech Heritage Society of Harris County and served as president. He also served on the board for the state society. He was a hoard member of the Czech Educational Foundatiort and a member of the Czech Heritage Foundation of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and the Louisiana Czech Heritage Society.

Victor made many trips to the Czech Republic. In 1993, he worked with the Valasske Museum for six months with Dr. Jaroslav Stika in Roznov.

Mr. Peter was also a member of the Chamber of Commerce and he served in the United States Army during World War II. He was past commander of the Disabled American Veterans and a member of the American Legion Post No. 521, Pasadena. He organized World War II Veterans reunion for D. Dogs Co. D. 160 Infantry Division. Victor belonged to Knights of Columbus Council No. 3700, Pasadena, KJT of Hillje, Texas, Po.L.K. of A. of Houston, and the Mended Hearts Inc. Chapter No. 38.

Survivors include his wife Lillie Mae of Pasadena; stepson George T. Shotwell and stepdaughter Heather Chandler, both of San Antonio; brother Leon Peter and wife Dorthy of the Woodlands; sisters Hattie Peter Drozd and husband Johnny of El Campo, Texas, and Alma Peter Waligura of Houston; one grandson William H.

Chandler and wife Lida; and three greatgrandsons, David, Billy and Michael.

Funeral services were held at St. Hyacinth Catholic Church with Monsignor Elmer Quinters officiating in English and assisted by Father Paul Chovance in the Czech language. Interment was in Houston National Cemetery.

Victor was a firm supporter of the customs, language and heritage of the Czech people. He will be missed by his many friends throughout Pasadena, Texas, the United States, and the Czech Republic.

We will never forget that Saturday, March 9, 1996. It was the day that word went out that Victor A. Peter had died at the age of 77. That a Cesky lev had fought his fiercest battle and a new star would now light up the heavens.

The year 1918 saw the birth of Czechoslovakia as a free nation. It was also the year that Victor began his life on Strnadel Road in the small Texas town of Hillje on December 8. He was the first of the four children that Leo and Dorthea Hoffman Peter would present to the world. In the years to come Strnadel Road also would hear the added laughter of his sisters, Alma and Hattie, and his brother, Leon.

Farm life in the '20s and '30s was hard on this young lion, but Victor would prove his mettle. In 1936, he was awarded the highest honors given by the Wharton County 4-H Club—the Gold and Silver Stars.

World War II saw young Victor in the Pacific arena for four years serving in the U.S. Army's 160th Infantry, 40th division in Company D. Peace was declared while he was state-side recuperating from a liver ailment. Linhart Steffek (CHS State Trustee) tells us Victor's only regret was: "He'd left all his war souvenirs

Mr. Victor A. Peter helped his fellow citizens to carry on the consciousness of kinship with their Moravian ancestors and to cultivate sincere love of the language their forefathers used to speak. He was an ardent guide to those who decided to visit their old country.

We were honored to have him a member of our Society, him, an Honorary Citizen of the town of Frenstat, which title was awarded to him in 1992 for his achievements in promoting friendship and mutual understanding between both our countries.

Early in life Victor would begin to celebrate the heritage of which he was so proud. It was the custom in his local church to present dramatic plays in Czech. And there was no lack of young people eager to perform in a Czech play that had Victor Peter in it. In 1969, Victor and his wife, Lillia Mae, helped organize SPJST Lodge Rozkvet in Pasadena. It was the largest group of charter members the SPJST had known then. Victor's leadership qualities always shined brightly. He followed Alfons Steffek as president of SPJST 172 and never looked hack. He held office in groups such as the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas, Mended Hearts, state and local Czech Heritage Society, Disabled American Veterans, SPJST, KJT and countless others.

The Czech Heritage Society of Texas has Victor to thank for much of its early growth. Marjorie Matula (Chairman of the Board of Trustees, CHS of Texas) recalls how Victor had so much stamina and energy. He would scout out areas where large groups of Czech Americans lived. He would write down names of individuals and visit them personally to share his pride and knowledge of his Czech heritage. He would often turn to Mrs. Matula and say: "Madam President, I think we need to concentrate on this area." He would then suggest she invite them to organize a chapter of the CHS. As VP of the Society, in 1986 and 1987, he planned state meetings in areas where a chapter was being organized to help give the fledgling group a fighting chance. He was deeply honored when the CHS invited him to become a trustee in 1989. Until the day he died, he was always working—guiding—improving!

Mrs. Matula remembers how Victor so enjoyed his many trips to genealogy workshops with the late Albert Blaha, founder of the CHS. The long trips with Albert gave him the opportunity to discuss another passion of his—philosophy.

Mrs. Matula says, "His thirst for knowledge could never he quenched."

On one of these trips with Albert Blaha the seed was planted for Victor to act as an unofficial ambassador to the Czech Republic. Long before the Iron Curtain came down the tireless Victor would visit the Czech Republic—often several times in one year. He studied the history and culture of places such as Radhost Mountain, Frenstat, p.R., Roznov, p.R. and the Wallachian area.

Education was very important to Victor—there could never be enough. He was so thirsty for knowledge that he spent six months in 1993 working in the CR to help Dr. Jaroslav Stika, director of the Valasske Muzeum. With his unending desire for knowledge, he encouraged the Czechs to start a study course for the visiting Americans. The Wallachian Summer Studies Program was born! He would coordinate tours of the CR to Hostyn, Velehrad and other historical sites. Many of his traveling companions would tell him they had never thought they would ever see their ancestral homeland as a free country.

Victor Peter not only got the Harris County Chapter started in 1985, he got the Gulf Coast Czech Festival off the ground, as well as started the Cemetery Research and Czech Veterans' Book Committees. Victor was president of Harris County Chapter from 1985 to 1992.

In Memory of Mary Dedek As long as hearts remember and for as long as hearts care, We never part with those whom we love so dean Mary Dedek passed away at the age of 77 years in Hayward, California. She was born on July 12, 1918, in Caddo, Oklahoma. She entered into rest on February 8, 1996. Graveside services were held at Lone Tree Cemetery in Hayward, California.

Mary was the beloved wife of Willie Dedek; loving mother of Stanley Dedek and Larry Dedek of Hayward; dear grandmother of Dara Dedek of Hayward; and the dear sister of Bessie Stepan of El Campo, Texas, Elsie Mazola of Wallis, Texas, Rosie Schiller of Houston, Texas, and Estelle Keys of Fremont, California.

Again our sincere thoughts and prayers go to Mary's family.

Brother Zapalac was born December 24, 1912, to Francis Stasny and Joe Zapalac in Buckholts, Texas. He was married to Mary Volek on August 1, 1940, in Damon at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church. He was a member of Sts. Basil and Thomas Catholic Church of Angleton, and the owner and operator of the Roundup since 1937.

Survivors are his wife, Mary Zapalac of Angleton; son and daughter-in-law Clarence "Red" and Betty Gardovsky of Angleton; brother Albert Zapalac of Angleton; grandchildren Wayne and Michelle Gardovsky of West Columbia, Michael and Michelle Gardovsky of Angleton, Renee and Pat Tumlinson of Clute, Marcia and Michael Schaat of Clute, and Carmen and Blake Meischen of Cypress; great-grandchildren Lathon Gardovsky and wife Gretchen, Courtney Swint, Chris Bowers, Holly, Randy and Keith Gardovsky, Kasey and Dean Tumlinson, Jake and Zachary Schaat, and Dalton Meischen; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A wake/rosary service was held at Palms Funeral Home at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 8. Funeral services were at Sts. Basil and Thomas Catholic Church in Angleton with Father David Zapalac officiating.

Pallbearers were Wayne, Michael, and Lathon Gardovsky, Pat Tumlirison, Jr., Michael Schaat, and Blake Meischen.

Interment was in the Angleton Cemetery under the arrangement,,of Palms Funeral Home of Angleton.

Expression of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth, Texas, wish to express sympathy on behalf of our entire membership to the family of RUDOLPH "RUDY" WRUBLE, a former beef boner at Swift and Company, who died on April 22, 1996, in Aledo, Texas. Rudolph Wruble was born August 22, 1915, in Fort Worth. He worked for Swift and Company for 33 years. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth.

He was married for 61 years to Millie Haba. In his younger years, he was a Sokol gymnast.

Survivors include his wife, Millie Haba Wruble of Fort Worth; his son, Rudy Wruble, Jr., of Mineola; his daughter and son-in-law Millie and Mike Crow of Aledo; two sisters, Elizabeth Gregory of Haltom City and Frances Bailey of Reading, Pennsylvania; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Cassandra and Arch McColl of Dallas; and granddaughter, LaVonda Crow of Jacksonville.

The funeral was held at Mount Olivet Funeral Home with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Memory of Louise (Nanny) Baros In

Louise Baros, 97, of Westhoff died Wednesday, April 10, 1996. She was born July 10, 1898, in Shiner, Texas, to the late Joe and Rosie Hurta Lukas. She was a retired cook for the Westhoff Independent School District. Mrs. Baros was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary No. 369, SPJST Fraternal Lodge 125, and St. John Lutheran Church.

Survivors include her daughter Angelene Hilbrich of Westhoff; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William E. Baros; her daughter Estelle Bunjes; sister Amalie Lukas Baros; brothers Edward J. Lukus and Joe Lukus; and one grandson.

Expression of Sympathy The members of Lodge 180, Burleson wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed member, MRS. LYDIA BARABAS. Mrs. Barabas died on March 29 being stricken with a heart attack at the cemetery while visiting her husband's and son's graves.

Mrs. Barabas's mother was the daughter of Jacob and Theresa Sindelney. She was born in 1912 to Jacob and Mrs. Ivicic and married Emil Barabas on January 31, 1931.

Services were held at 10 a.m. on April 1 at Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Granger. Ed Rabroker officiated.

Survivors are her son, Dennis Barabas; sisters Mary Underwood of Del City, Oklahoma, and Vlasta Kaderka of Killeen; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Tuesday, April 23 at Seaton Cemetery with the Rev. R.R. Bravenec officiating.

Mrs. Mikeska was horn in Bell County to Joe and Annie Dockal Motl. She was a lifelong resident of Bell County and attended Seaton schools. She married Joseph J. Mikeska in Temple in 1923.

She was a housewife and a member of Seaton Brethren Church and the Christian Sisters. She was also a past member of SPJST Lodge 47.

Survivors are two sons, Albert Mikeska of Temple and Leo Mikeska of Damon; a daughter, Judy Myer of Morgan's Point; three stepdaughters, Della Coufal of Oscar, Betty Bowls of Temple, and Theresa Carper of Dallas; 27 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great grandchildren.

PECHAL. Services for Betty S. Pechal, 79, of Temple were at 2 p.m. Monday, April 15 at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Temple with the Rev. Eugene Kotrla officiating.

Burial was in Seaton Cemetery.

Mrs. Pechal died Friday, April 12, 1996, in a Temple hospital.

She was born in Ellinger to Joe and Veronica Klimicek Kotrla. She married Joe Pechal in 1938 in Bell County. She had been an area resident for most of her life. She attended Seaton Brethren Church and was a member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton.

Survivors are her husband, Joe W. Pechal of Temple; two sons, J.W. Pechal of Temple and Larry Pechal, both of Temple; two daughters, Janet Mabry and Betty Ketterman, both of Temple; a brother, William Kotrla of Oscar; two sisters, Albina Motl of Ennis and Lydia Kotrla of Temple; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She is survived by a son, Shawn Massirer of Waco; a daughter, Valerie Massirer of Waco; her mother, Bernice Pustejovsky of West; her paternal grandmother, Stevie Pustejovsky of West; a brother, Ronnie Pustejovsky of Waco; two sisters, Peggy Holecek of West, and Donna Pustejovsky of Mt. Calm; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Thomas Pustejovsky, Larry Pustejovsky, Rocky Braswell, Doug Dulock, David Polansky, Joe Mashek, Mike Samuelson, and Gary Berger.

Youth Letters Section District Two DYC Reports on Spring Meeting

Dear Readers, The District Two Spring Meeting was held on Sunday, March 17 at Lodge 18, Elgin.

Our youth were a very important part of the entire day. The district youth club met with the election of officers first on the agenda. Election results were: President-Jessica Lyon (Lodge 177, Academy), Vice President-Tammy Baker (Lodge 24, Cyclone), SecretaryTreasurer-Victoria Smith (Lodge 47, Seaton), Reporter-Tracy Betak (Lodge 187, Round Rock); Flag BearersStephen Hanusch (Lodge 47, Seaton) and Andy Baker (Lodge 24, Cyclone). Thank you to our past officers: Youth members voted to take a summer trip to AstroWorld on August 17.

Youth Achievement Day and camp were discussed. Thanks to all members for the great input.

Miss Amber Pechal of Seaton, Miss Chasidee Cortasie of Bruceville, and Miss Mary Kathryn Tischler of Granger and Mr. Jimmy Baker of Cyclone performed as pros.

They each did a fantastic show and were enjoyed by all. I am so proud of each of you. Thank you, Amber, Chasidee, Mary Kathryn, and Jimmy. It won't be long until you will be on stage performing for YAD. Two very special people who were a big part of our program were our emcees, past District Two/State King and Mr. SPJST Michael Morris and past District Two Queen/State Runner-Up and Runner-Up Miss SPJST Melanie Zavodny. As always, you outdid yourselves. I appreciate both of you so much.

How very fortunate we in District Two are to have these two very fine young people so active in our youth program.

Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Member Anticipates Seaton May Fete

Dear Readers, Lodge 4, Hallettsville sponsored a Czech class. About 14 students, including myself, took the class. Our ages ran from 65 to 15. At age 17, I was the second youngest person there.

'Every other Tuesday, we met at the Hallettsville Senior Citizens Hall to hold the three-month, two hour class. It was not as easy as I had expected.

My grandmother, Victoria Orsak, sat on one side of me, and Jim Weist on the other. Jim and I had a lot of fun. He always talked about his beautiful new wife. I have seen her at our district meeting and she is a very pretty woman.

Anyway, I think Jim and I cut up too much in class. Mr. Adolf Motal, our Czech professor, never got on to us. He is a very kind and intelligent man. He knows what he teaches, and he makes the class very interesting. Grandma Orsak sat on the other side of me in class. I was glad because she always helped me.

I am sure that everyone can read and understand the Czech language a lot better now than when we started.

Dear Vestnik, We elected new officers in our youth club. I was elected flag bearer for this year and I am happy.

I am also sad because my very best friend died. His name was Cody Kohl and he loved to sing my hest song. He liked to sing Like It, I Love It, I Want Some More of It." We only got to play tball one time. I got to hit the ball three times. Cody was the first baseman all the time. He caught the very first tly ball of the game. Everyone was proud of him, even the opposite team. In school, we had a lot of fun at Westphalia and I will miss him very much.
