Something Very Special This past Sunday, of course, was Easter.

It was a beautiful day in most parts of the state, providing individuals and families the opportunity to enjoy many traditional Easter observances, such as sunrise services, Easter egg hunts and big Easter dinners. For others, the day offered time for reflection, including visits to the cemetery to remember and pay respects to loved ones. In our case, the trip included a visit to the old section of the local cemetery where many of the weathered inscriptions were in the Czech language. It was interesting to note that several of these old markers also pictured the SPJST star and identified the member's local lodge. My mother was with me and we talked about that for a long time. Membership in the SPJST and the local lodge was very special to these people ... They took pride in their membership for it symbolized something about their character and their desire to make things better for their families and communities.

I appreciate the wisdom of our SPJST founding fathers. They established an organization that provided as much for the future as it did for their day. By providing life insurance as a dominant feature, they established a valuable financial service for members. At the same time, they recognized the value of fraternalism.

That explains the SPJST's lorg history and devotion to projects related to family, community and country.

Even though the times have changed, the SPJST continues to provide special meaning to members' lives. Fraternalism - like optimism - is an attitude. It's a positive way of looking at life. A positive and people-oriented way of doing business. Read any typical issue of the Vestnik and you'll see how our lodges and lodge members are working to promote togetherness, build financial security and inject vitality into their communities.

Just as when the SPJST was established in 1897, maintaining and building a Society for the future is an exciting and thrilling experience with the potential for great rewards. It is an experience that puts new membership on the books and new life into our lodges routine existence. It is worth the trials and tribulations, the frustrations, anxieties, and demands of energy and time. The SPJST has an abundance of talented members to carry on the work that the pioneers and leaders of our fraternal society started.

By working together in the spirit of brotherhood, we will achieve new heights as a fraternal benefit society in 1996 and beyond.

Lanita Anglin Announces Candidacy for Secretary-Treasurer Dear Brothers and Sisters, It is with great enthusiasm that I officially announce my candidacy for the position of Secretary-Treasurer for the Supreme Lodge of the SPJST. I ask for your support based on my experience and qualifications.

After I graduated from East Texas State University with a degree in Business Administration, I worked for one of Baton Rouge's largest banks in their mortgage loan department. In October, 1979, I began my career at SPJST. I have had the privilege to learn all aspects of the Secretary-Treasurer's office and, by far, the most enjoyable one is serving so many wonderful members of the Society.

The office of Secretary-Treasurer is primarily responsible for investing the Society's funds, monitoring both the bond and mortgage loan portfolios, and servicing the needs of the membership, as well as overseeing its properties. During the past 16 years, I have developed a keen insight into the special needs of our members, as well as a proven record of financial goals and accomplishments.

As you may know, I was appointed by the Board to fill the unexpired term of office of my predecessor. Professionally, the most important attributes that I offer are integrity, knowledge and experience.

I have hand-on experience managing the Society's bond portfolio which requires an intensive amount of research and monitoring. I have made solid recommendations that have given our Society the strong foundation to respond quickly to the needs of our members.

I have the essential business talents necessary to complete reports that are filed with IRS and all other regulatory agencies regarding our mortgage loans, surrender of certificates and annuity withdrawals.

The Secretary-Treasurer's greatest responsibility is servicing members' certificates... This requires a knowledge of the products the Society is currently selling and has sold. It is important that continuity is maintained for our members in the various insurance products we sell and offer to our members.

Serving as the Secretary-Treasurer for the past year and a half has afforded me the opportunity to meet and visit with many of you on a professional and a personal basis. This is a position of high trust, and one I hold close to my heart.

Keith D. Gatewood Announces Candidacy for Vestnik Editor Dear Delegates, Members and Friends, The time is fast approaching for the membership to set the course of the SPJST going into the next century. The past 100 years have seen the SPJST grow strong on a foundation of true fraternalism, perseverance and determination.

This is, undoubtedly, an exciting time to be a member of the SPJST. It is with tl..1L same excitement that I am seeking the office of Vestnik Editor.

Like most members, the SPJST has become to mean much more to me than simply another organization to which I might belong. Since June of 1991, I have served the SPJST in the Insurance Department as a State Field Representative. This position has given me a unique opportunity to see many facets of the SPJST that the average member would not. It has allowed me to examine the diversity of the local lodges, to witness the uncommon efforts made by the members helping others and to feel like I am part of a bigger "team".

My fraternal experience has equally enabled me to see yet more diversity of the SPJST. As a member of Lodge 66, Waco, I served as President during 19941995. I have served nearly continuously on the Board of Trustees for the lodge since my membership began with them.

Both positions taught me what problems face the local lodges, how to deal with them and how to overcome obstacles. In my travels as a State Field Representative, I have drawn on my experience as a lodge president to be able to assist other lodges with their own problems. I would work hard to incorporate that knowledge into the Vestnik each week.

My editorial criteria would always focus on the positive and rewarding aspects of membership. I would incorporate both the fraternal and financial strengths of the SPJST in each issue. I would also hring many technical abilities and skills to the Vestnik. My technical abilities to produce the Vestnik were gained over a ten-year period. Working with my father, I learned the printing business from the ground up. I was wit-

ness to his work on the Vestnik with then Editor Rudy Sefcik. My job at that time, working for him, involved doing the mailing of Vestnik. I have developed my own skills in desktop publishing. This is the method currently being utilized in the production of the Vestnik. I would also utilize the connections available through the Internet to obtain information from many sources such as communicating with the Czech Republic Foreign Ministry for up-to-date information.

All three aspects: my fraternal experience, insurance experience and technical abilities, make me a well-suited candidate for the position as Editor. I welcome the opportunity to continue to serve the membership as I have in the past. With your support, and your vote at the convention in June, I will pledge to meet, as well as exceed, any of your expectations as members of the SPJST. Vanicek Announces Candidacy for Vestnik Editor Brian

Dear Brothers and Sisters: It is with conviction and a deep sense of purpose that I announce my candidacy for reelection as Vestnik Editor. I know the responsibility is great. It is great because it is truly the members' power, in the form of consent and oversight, that is delegated to the Editor. Reelected, 1 pledge —above all else —to remain fair and honest in all communications with the members of the Society.

The SPJST has always been an important part of my life — but never so important as these last four years — since becoming your Editor. From day one, my top 'priority has been to develop a favorable atmosphere in which to showcase our insurance and fraternal programming efforts. Generally speaking, we have been successful. According to the results of a recent survey of lodge officers and sales representatives, the Vestnik achieved a score of 9.1 — out of a possible 10 — for overall effectiveness.

Through all of the late nights and weekends, they were always with me — if not in body, then in my heart.

From a project management standpoint, I am happy to report that it costs less to produce the Vestnik now — and for a larger audience — than it did four years ago.

This reduction was achieved as a result of the the in-house typesetting process that was implemented in the fall of 1992.

Still, the Vestnik is not perfect. There will always be room for innovation and improvement. It's in that spirit that special Vestnik seasonal sections and communications projects like the SPJST Member Services Directory have been introduced. Another exciting idea on the drawing board is something we've simply been referring to as the "annual report." Pending additional discussion and approvals, it could appear as early as next spring. This would be an attractive and informative color magazine in celebration of our first 100 years of service — the kind of publication that we would want to distribute far and wide — wherever people meet — to let our friends and neighbors know about what the SPJST has to offer.

Since the 26th SPJST Convention in 1992, the role of the Editor has evolved to encompass additional and significant responsibilities, including the development and publication of promotional literature for the SPJST on a statewide and local lodge level and the development of various projects and media relations, especially on a statewide level. As a result, the SPJST has increased its visibility in various parts of the state.

Even with the progress that has been made, many exciting communication opportunities remain largely untapped.

These include working one-on-one with local lodges in the area of planning and promotions; the need to inject vitality into the marketing and distribution of our financial and fraternal programming efforts; and the need to explore and develop new communication technologies and marketing opportunities.

Taking all of these things into consideration, the Publication Committee, which met in Temple on March 2, developed several long-range initiatives which were submitted to the By-Laws Committee for their consideration. Among these were recommendations to update and enliven our emphasis on Czech heritage and culture; and a call for action, encouraging the SPJST to establish a foothold in the area of computerized marketing, via the Internet. associated with our lives. More than 30 million people in 156 countries worldwide have access to the Internet. Simply stated, the Internet is made up of people and computers. With the proper equipment, one can sit at a computer and communicate directly with anyone, anyplace in the world. Many businesses are already using the Internet to share information, including text, photos, video and sound with their present and prospective customers.

After nearly four years as your Editor, I continue to enjoy my work and remain enthusiastic and optimistic about the future of the SPJST. After all, look at all we've got going for us: We're in a wonderful business that offers financial products and community services that everyone can use. Add to that we're financially strong and have a lot of talented, good-hearted men and women in all parts of the organization actively working to promote the Society. And the best part of all — there is still so much we can achieve!

The time is now for each of us as dedicated fraternalists to join hearts, hands and minds and establish a game plan with clearly defined organizational goals for the 21st Century. A game plan that builds on our strengths; a game plan that seeks to unite us; and a game plan that challenges each of us as lodge members, as employees and as elected representatives to achieve our fullest potential. By working together as partners and as brothers and sisters for the common good of the SPJST, our future will indeed be bright.

I have been an SPJST member for 36 years and serve as Vice President and Board Secretary for Lodge 24, Cyclone.

Before becoming your Editor, I owned and operated a writing and publication design business in Temple. Before that, I served as Communications Manager for the National Bank for Cooperatives in Denver, Colorado; and, before that, as Writer and Public Relations Coordinator for the University of Texas Ex-Students' Association in Austin. I graduated from Rogers High School and earned my bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Texas at Austin. As a student, I was Editor-in-Chief of the college yearbook, President of the Czech Club and President of the Society of Professional Journalists.

To introduce myself, my name is Larry Laznovsky. I am 50 years of age and my wife's name is Lil. We have been married for 26 years. We have two daughters, Lisa, a recent graduate of Texas A&M, and Lori is in her third year at the University of North Texas. I am employed by AT&T and have 30 plus years of service and am retirement eligible. I am currently in my third three-year term as Secretary/Treasurer of CWA Local 6150 that represents over 2,000 AT&T employees across the State. In conjunction with the State Horseshoe Tournament on April 27, we are adding a new category on a trial basis—washing pitching for ages 16 and up. We will accept only team players this year. There is no limit to the number of teams per lodge. Teams must register with the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator on or before April 25.

First, second, third and fourth place teams will receive SPJST calculators and recognition in the Vestnik. If there is an interest in the category of washer pitching, we will seek Supreme Lodge Board approval to continue this tourney as a part

of the State Horseshoe Tournament. A member can only play in one category— horseshoes or washers.

The entry fee for these tournaments is $6 per member and this includes the snacks and the noon meal. SPJST membership is required to participate in the tournament.

We hope you will participate in one of these contests and enjoy the fellowship with other SPJST members.

District Three Presents Fall Meeting Minutes

Larry Laznovsky Over the years, my activities have taken me across the state and across the country. I have been fortunate to travel to the Czech Republic three times since the demise of Communism and have a working knowledge of the Czech language. I feel I have gained valuable experience from working with state and national elected officials to further the causes of the organizations I represent. As a member of these various organizations, I have served on committees that have dealt with crisis of various dimensions and feel my input has always been valued and fair.

As you can see from my background, I feel I have the qualifications to be the next District Three Director of SPJST. If elected, I will promise to be fair and keep the best interest of SPJST in the forefront.

Lodge 1, Fayetteville Hosts District One Spring Meeting Sunday, April 14 Dear District One Members, The spring meeting is set for Sunday, April 14 at Lodge 1, Fayetteville.

To get to Fayetteville from Brenham, take Highway 290 to FM 237. Turn left on FM 237, traveling to FM 291. Turn left on FM 291 to Fayetteville. In Fayetteville, you will come to the intersection of FM 291 and FM 159. Turn left toward Industry. The hall is about twotenths of a mile from the intersection.

The fraternal activities coordinator's report was also presented by George Pauling. He stated that 92 scholarships were awarded from the 100 Pennies and the volleyball tournament was scheduled for November 18. Jerry Gill motioned to accept the report and Bessie Petr seconded. All approved.

The Supreme Lodge report was presented by Brother Sidney Kacir, SPJST Legal Advisor. Brother Sid Pokladnik presented the District Three Director's Report.

Johnnie Krizan of the By-Laws Committee stated: "Since the last district meeting, the By-Law Committee still has not had a formal meeting. So in that regard, I don't have anything to report to you at this time other than to tell you that the convention

is upon us and it's getting closer. I remind you, district members, to go back to your lodges and if you think that there is some area of the SPJST that you see that needs fixing or repaired in the way of the constitution or its by-laws—that is what you need to be thinking about. You need to send ideas. Submit them to the By-Law Committee no later than 60 days before the date of the convention. Those are submitted to the secretary and I have been selected as the secretary of the ByLaw Committee for this coming convention. My name and address are in the Vestnik so between now and 60 days prior to the convention, if your lodge has or you as an interested member have any suggestions or changes to our by-laws, those need to be submitted to me. We encourage you to participate in this process as much as possible. The SPJST, every four years, is ran by the members through its elected delegates. Those delegates come to the convention as your representatives and they, in effort, have the future of your organization in their hands.

Begin to elect your delegates at your annual meeting in November or December with great concern implemented in the election of your delegates. As a member of the District By-Law Committee, suggestions and your ideas have an open-door policy."

Al Kercho presented the Finance Committee report: "The Finance Report Committee has not met since the spring meeting. We meet once a year, primarily making recommendations in salaries for the officers, which you approved in a referendum, not an increase in salaries. Since it is the year of the convention, we will be meeting more than once before the convention.

So let me know if your have anything you would like to share with me or the other members. Nothing special to report."

Brother Ben Jarma was out so Brother Jerry Kucera presented the insurance report: "Real busy, there are lots of new things coming up in the near future. First of all, District Three, last year, had 142 new members. This year, we have 165 new members. Eight lodges have qualified for awards as of September 30. This will go on through December 31. We have one lodge in District Three that has achieved the Gold Star Plus Award (25 new members and their premiums are over $10,000). They are still working on new members. If they were to get a check, it would be for $1,162.64 instead of $1,000. There is another lodge that

6/VkSTN1K—Wednesday, April 0, 1996 has achieved the Gold Star Plus Award, one silver and two bronze. Our earned premiums for District Three for this year are $54,995.24; insurance sales for this year are $6,690,000, compared to a little over $3,000,000 last year. The Home Office has a quota for District Three applications from July to October. We are ten applications behind to meet the quota through October 31.

"In a few weeks, we will be breaking with a new policy called Senior Life. The sales representatives have heard about this. Some members are real excited.

The issue age is 50 years to 80 years with a minimum of $5,000 insurance and a maximum of $15,000 insurance. It is a little different from the other policies we have because the Home Office has checked and come to realize that we have a lot of members that are in this category.

A long time ago these members purchased a $500 or a $1,000 policy to be a member. Now, they are at the age where some may have a slight medical problem, but they will still be able to purchase this insurance. There are two types of policies on this. The questions will be a lot shorter than what they are on the original applications. When you answer these questions, if you answer all of the questions "no" you will he issued what they calla preferred life insurance policy (if they pass away two months down, then the beneficiary will receive the full amount). Now if you have a slight medical problem and you answer some of the questions "yes," the underwriter will be taking a look at this and you will be issued a rated death policy. Within the first three years of the policy, if you should pass away, your beneficiary will get the premium plus interest plus 20 percent. Past the third year, you will receive the full amount of the policy. The Home Office is going to really put some effort out on this with the sales representatives.

We are going to have a District Three sales seminar November 13-16. Lodges 6, 92, 84, and 25 will host a seminar.

After we have had the meeting, Lodge 92 in this district is the target lodge and I have met with the sales representatives there. What the Home Office is doing is through the computer, pulling out all of the members' names between the ages of 50 years to 80 years. The sales representatives that have sold these policies will have these members. We have a bunch of members that are what we call "orphan members," meaning they do not have a sales representative. We will be dividing these members with the active sales representatives in that participating lodge.

Julie Pritchard announced the attendance at the district fall meeting as 118 present.

Inez Greenlees from the Convention Book Committee stated that they are meeting on the third Monday of the month at the Milan Gallery in downtown Fort Worth. If you have any questions, please feel free to do so.

Old business included the by-laws discussion and approval by George Pauling.

He stated: "In the spring, copies of rules and regulations have been researched and put in the same form they were done the last time in 1979. The places that are highlighted in dark ink are the changes to the by-laws for one reason or another that you have passed on at one of the meetings since 1979. I researched it out, put it in here. Most are our present working conditions. I recommend change and then we can finalize it. Three people were appointed by the past president— Johnny Krizan, George Pauling and Gladys Yates to serve on this committee. At the 1995 spring meeting, a fourth person was nominated—Ernest Haskovec of Ennis. The Planning Committee met in October and the District President John Engelke nominated Linda Novak as a fifth member.

There is a recommended change: page 3 at the very bottom, Section 7, paragraph B reads 'Treasurer duties he shall notify all lodges in the district of a dues change of one cents of members who have attained the age of 16 - six weeks to the spring meeting.' In April 1988, the word 'spring' was changed to 'fall.'

Martha Durham, our present treasurer, has recommended that we go back to `spring.' She has been doing it in the spring because she had no knowledge of this until we researched this. So the recommended change is changing the word to 'spring' instead of 'fall.'" Martha Durham motioned for the change and Gordon Hubenak seconded. All approved.

Sid Pokladnik made a suggestion to get an approval. Sid motioned for it and Gordon Hubenak seconded. All approved.

Sid then made the suggestion that since there are several lodges not represented, that for our spring meeting a special invitation be given to these lodges not to forget that we have district meetings." Sid Pokladnik motioned for this.

Darlene Engelke seconded and all approved.

Under new business, Martha Durham, District Treasurer, presented Johnny Krizan, President of Lodge 6, host lodge, with a check to supplement the cost of the lunch served. Also, about 210 cans of food were donated to a Catholic charity in West to be used for their food drive.

She stated that camp was great and they had a great YAD at Lodge 154. At State YAD, they had three out of four junior and teen beseda circles. A district lock-in will be at Lodge 84 on December 1 and 2.

Letters Section

Lodge 4, Hallettsville Reports on March Meeting Dear Members, Our lodge met Sunday, March 10, 1996, at the Hallettsville Youth Center at 2 p.m. President Joe Siptak called the meeting to order followed by the pledge to the flag. Guests State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Frank Klinkovsky and his wife Irma from Temple were recognized.

Resolutions of sympathy were read by Gaye Galetka for our departed members, Betty Filla and Selma Woytek.

Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes to the last meeting which were approved.

Correspondence was read. We have a transfer member to our lodge from Lodge 88, Houston. She is Dorothy Grahmann Henneke.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Lillie Balusek told the members of upcoming events and activities.

Treasurer Helen Zabransky gave her report.

Sunshine Chairman Elsie Mascheck reported on the bingo held for the residents at Stevens Convalescent Center.

She thanked the following members for assisting her: Vicky Zak, Mary Matula, Jo Ann Matula, Lillie Balusek, and Evelyn Sklar.

Audit Chairman Joe Balusek reported they had met and that the treasurer's books were in order.

A report was given on the SPJST Local Lodge Workshop and 1995 Incentive Awards Banquet held on February 24 which were informative, interesting and entertaining. Sales representative Mary Matula showed the members the beautiful plaque she received.

Attending from our lodge were Joe Siptak, Mary and Frank Matula, Annie Vahalik, Elizabeth and Jonathan, and Patsy and Helen Zabransky. Many thanks to the Supreme Lodge and the hosting lodges for the enjoyable day.

Youth Leader. Annie Vahalik gave her report. Several members rode on the SPJST float with other District Six Youth Club members in the Victoria Livestock Show Parade on March 2. They planned to have a booth and a program at the district meeting on March 17. An Easter egg hunt will be held at the next meeting on April 14.

A discussion was held on honoring Agnes Mikush, our member who will be

96 years young in May. Final plans will he made'at the next meeting.

The members voted to purchase a quarter of a page in the Convention Souvenir Booklet.

Since the Youth Center is booked to another group on our regular meeting date, it was decided to meet at the Rotary Club Pavilion in the park for our next meeting.

State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Frank Klinkovsky gave an informative program on the SPJST volunteer services program. He explained how it works and the benefits to our members. Thank you, Brother Frank and Sister Irma, for taking time to be with us. We enjoyed having the both of you at our meeting!

A report was given on the Czech class.

Fifteen students were to complete the course and receive certificates on March 12.

The meeting adjourned and a delicious lunch followed.

Mr. and Mrs. Edward Hurta Celebrate Golden Wedding Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Edward 0. Hurta of Temple celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary at Clem Mikeska's Banquet Room.

Hosting the affair was their grandchildren, Geraldine Faye (Jerry) Hurta of Temple and Dwaine Scott Hurta of Garland. They were assisted by Kathryn Murrow of Rogers, Sandra Moseley and Sharon Moseley of Robinson and Linda Raesz of Austin.

Edward Hurta and Edna Richter were married March 31, 1946, in St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Taylor, Texas, by

Rev. Krueger. They were attended by Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Hehman, sister and brother-in-law of the groom. They have lived most of their 50 years in Temple.

Mr. Hurta is retired from Lone Star Gas Company after more than 38 years employment. Mrs. Hurta is a domestic engineer. They are members of First Lutheran Church.

Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Bucanek of Taylor celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on the river walk in San Antonio, Texas.

The couple was married on February 19, 1956, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Taylor by Msgr. Arthur Michalka.

The Bucaneks have four children, Debbie Kubiak (husband David) of Taylor, Cheryl Hegar (husband Justin) of

Taylor, Charles D. Bucanek (wife Thisha) of Round Rock, and Sidney Bucanek (wife Chris) of Leander. They also have 11 grandchildren.

They are all members of SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor. Mr. Bucanek is employed at the American Desk in Taylor, and Irene is the owner/operator of the Kolache Shop in Taylor.

President Dolly Hajda opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and a moment of silent prayer.

Agnes Eschberger read the minutes and they were approved. Agnes Rupp gave the treasurer's report followed reports from Irene Helgren (Tickets), Bill (Bar), and George Liardon (Membership).

Mildred gave a report on the memorial fund. It is growing nicely. Thanks to everyone for their support. Let's keep it up. What a nice, useful way to remember our loved ones.

Several members applied for the position of sales representative. At this time only Delores qualifies and she will fill out her application. Good luck, Delores!

Johnny gave a report on the meal expense for the district meeting. Thanks to all the members who helped peel potatoes, cook beans, cleanup and serve.

What a wonderful crew! Thanks to everyone who brought dessert. What a great and delicious variety! A very special thanks to Melvin and Loretta Remmert. They are not members but they helped on Saturday and Sunday.

Great barbecue—we could not have done it without you two.

We will be raising the price of the hall rental. We are the least expensive in our area. Taxes and the utilities are going up and some bands are asking for more money. The Polka Fest was discussed.

We are not making very much money.

We will look at the setup and see how we can improve the distribution of the

monies. We are very proud of our Czech heritage and our beautiful building. We do not want to lose either one We must make enough money to keep up our building. We have come this far. We do not want anything to happen now. What a loss if our children do not have this to come to.

The May Fete is coming up. Take part! Get your children involved.

Remember what fun and how special you felt when you got all dressed up to take part in it.

We have some dances coming up in April. Get the family together and come.

First of all, I want to say thank you to two ladies who have given of themselves for many years: Ella Arnold has served as our treasurer for many years and has always had our hooks in tip-top order and Jarmilla Ohermiller who has been our card chairman over the past several years—when anyone in our lodge had a happy or sad occasion, this is the lady that sent out a card. Our lodge has henefitted greatly from the time these two ladies have devoted to SPJST. 88, Houston Presents March 11 Meeting Minutes

President Clara Broz opened the meeting and Sydney Jurchak, Bennie Kocich and S.J. Ordener led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Report of Officers President Broz presented the membership with a plaque received at the awards dinner and announced the celebration party will he held on May 5. This year the focus will be a youth club reunion with invitations to members from 1971.

First Vice President Marie Stayton thanked the flag bearers and asked Johnny Broz to take next month's flag ceremonies.

Second Vice President Kathy Trefell reported new Shriners Hospital playground equipment was purchased with funds raised from dances held at the lodge.

Secretary-Treasurer Janet Garcia presented the financial report.

Youth Leader Barbara Linney reported the first state lock-in held in Temple was attended by 14 youth club members. The Easter egg hunt was set for March 30 with Lodge 88 as the host. The youth club meeting time has changed to 7 p.m.

Entertainment Chairperson Donna Merkel thanked the flag hearers and reported Leo Majek was scheduled for August 25.

Willie Wehring, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, reported the approval on various areas being repaired or maintained.

Edna Wehring of the Dance Class Committee reported Jeanette Bender and Linda Wehring her assistants. Thirty students signed up and more are expected to join.

Gene Barcak of the Choral Club reported he received an invitation from the University of St. Thomas to perform on April 14 and he expects to present new songs.

Czech Instructor Bill Souchek introduced guests from the Czech Republic, Jeri and Vera Tichanek, who were visiting Victor and Evelyn Janak. He also introduced Bill and Effie Rosene who spoke about the plans of a Czech Museum to preserve the Czech heritage and leave behind a rich understanding of the Czech culture for the next generation.

District Youth Counselor Marie Stayton reported her assistants as Jeanette Bender and Dottie Watkins. She also reminded everyone to bring their children and grandchildren to the Easter egg hunt on March 30.

Get-well wishes are extended to Walter Koeppen, Doug Pully, Edward Stang, Mary Kosut and Homer Alexander.

District Five Field Representative Helen Hegwood reported the workshop and awards banquet was very productive and enjoyable. The number one sales representative for February was Edna Wehring.

Door prizes went to Jo Ann Buri, Carol Liebscher, Carol Havemann, Elsie Roznovsky, and Dorothy Pflughaupt.

88, Houston to Host AARP Defensive Driving Course

Have you checked the last time that you have taken the AARP Defensive Driving course at SPJST Lodge 88, Houston?

This course is good for a three-year period and will reduce your automobile insurance premium.

The next class is scheduled for April 18 and 19 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the cost is $8 per student.

Eligibility requirements are persons ages 50 years and older.

Traffic violations of any kind are not eligible for this course.

92, Fort Worth Delegate Reports on Delegates' Meeting

Lodge

Dear Members and Friends, This is a special letter about the delegates' meeting for delegates to the convention that will be held in Arlington, Texas.

This meeting was held at Lodge 66, Waco. The Supreme Lodge officers were asked to be there, and they gave their reports of progress for the past four years and it shows that SPJST is a growing organization.

President Howard Leshikar talked about the 100-year celebration that will be in 1997. He also expressed the importance of keeping the lodges fraternal as that way we can be exempt from some taxes.

Brother Leonard Mikeska also explained about the growth and stated that 35 new sales representatives have been trained to sell life insurance. He said also that we need to keep fraternalship as to keep from just being an insurance company.

Brother Jerry Mikulas talked about interest rates and that it is a job to find good places to put money to get the best rates and the safest place. He also stated that some members have combined old policies and put them into the universal policies. There may he less policies but

the insurance is increased.

Brother Sidney Kacir always talks about.-how careful the lodges should be as the laws change, so all should have liability for our protection. Brother Kacir is the attorney who keeps up with the insurance law changes that are done in Austin, Texas.

Sister-Lanita Anglin is being sure to keep up with the bonds and when they mature and she is also watching the real estate loans. She also said she was a candidate for the secretarty-treassurer position.

Brother Brian Vanicek spoke about the Vestnik and stated that the newspaper is here to inform members about SPJST insurance and SPJST fraternal activities.

He made a good report on the Vestnik and about how unity gets things done.

Brother Brian said that he is a candidate for reelection as editor of the Vestnik As for candidates for District Three Director, Sherrie Kubala Watkins stated she has been a long-time member and has worked with the lodge and with the youth club. She was also a queen from Lodge 92. She is working on a committee for the convention. Brother Larry Laznovsky from Lodge 135, Ennis, Texas, is assistant director to Brother Sid Pokladnik. Larry is the president of other organizations, and he is a sales representative in his lodge. He said that if elected, he would try to fill the position of district director like Brother Pokladnik has done.

Brother Weldon Schiller of Lodge 24, Cyclone has asked for the job of secretary-treasurer. He gave a report of his qualifications. He stated that he has been a member of the lodge and is active in different programs. He is a college graduate.

Brother Keith Gatewood has announced that he is a candidate for the officer of the editor of the Vestnik. He stated that at one time his father printed the Vestnik and he helped mail the paper.

Brother Jerry Kucera has asked to be your next alternate for District Three Director. Brother Jerry, at this time, is the sales representative of Districts Three and Four.

Brother Johnny Krizan talked about the by-laws and asked if anyone has any new by-law recommendations or any changes that they need to be sent to the by-law committee no later than April 10.

The changes will be in the Vestnik. He said that any changes or new laws will be looked at and if they are not accepted by the by-law committee, the item can be brought to the convention floor to he acted on by the delegates.

This meeting was very interesting and there will be another meeting before the convention. The committee on the convention talked about the activities that will be around Arlington, ball games, and other places to have fun while at this convention. More will be in the Vestnik so please watch for the letter from the convention committee. The committee did say that there will be a Howdy Party at Lodge 92, Fort Worth and that busses will be taken from Arlington to the hall. This will be on June 9, 1996. The bus will take delegates and guests from the hotels free so you will not have to worry about getting lost. More on this will be written later.

We want to thank the lodge members for the nice sandwiches and pastries that were served to the delegates and Supreme Lodge Officers. Many thanks to all of you wonderful members.

I almost forget that Brother Sid Pokladnik announced that he is retiring as District Three Director this year. He made a nice speech and said that as mem-

After his nice speech, Brother Howard Leshikar asked that we all stand and give Brother Pokladnik a nice standing ovation for the 30 years that he has served as a director in the SPJST and other organizations. Brother Sid said we will always be in his heart. So Brother Sid, we are proud of all the work you have done and we wish you good health for many years ahead. God bless you and your wife.

107, Floresville to Honor 50-Year Members

SPJST Lodge 107, Floresville will honor 12 of its members with a barbecue chicken supper on Friday, April 19, 1996.

It will be at the SPJST hall, beginning at 6 p.m. with a social hour. The meal will begin at 7 p.m. sharp. All members that are planning on attending, please contact Bob Bayer at 216-7954 before April 12, 1996.

We will also honor all new members signed up in 1995 and our local salespeople. It is through the efforts of our salespeople that we are able to put this supper on.

Lodge 133, San Antonio will not be having a meeting on April 21 due to the district meeting that is being hosted by our lodge. The district meeting will be held on Sunday, May 5 at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church located at 1630 Goliad Road, beginning at 12 noon.

133, San Antonio Reports on March Meeting Lodge

Lodge 133, San Antonio held their monthly meeting on Sunday, March 17 at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Activity Center, located at 1630 Goliad Road in San Antonio. A barbecue luncheon was hosted in honor of members receiving 50year pins and to celebrate the lodge's 78th anniversary. A special thanks to our members for providing the delicious side dishes and desserts.

There were 35 members and nine guests present. Guests included District Director Bob Bayer and his wife, Pauline.

We were also pleased to be joined by one of our youngest members, Jordan Paige Summers, and her mother, Jennifer Summers. Jordan is the great-granddaughter and Jennifer is the granddaughter of Emil and Grace Rohan.

Brother Frank Fajkus passed away on March 11. We extend our sincere sympathy to Sister Viola Fajkus and their family and friends.

Sick members include Genevive Schultz. We offer our prayers for her quick recovery. Jaroslav Kleperlik is out of the hospital and he is doing well.

The Lodge 172, Pasadena social will be held April 21, 1996. Fifty-year pins will be presented to: Joe Wytovak Louise M. 172, Pasadena Reports on March Meeting

The regular meeting of Lodge 172, Pasadena was held on March 27 at 7:30 p.m. The meeting was called to order by our President Bobbye Johnson.

The Pledge of Allegiance was lead by our Second Vice President Emilie Sefcik with everyone standing. Everyone remained standing for a moment of silence for our deceased members.

The roll of officers was called by our Secretary Jo Mayfield.

Everyone was present except for Victor Peter, our historian, who passed away this month. The lodge and all its members extend their sympathies and condolences to his wife, Lillia Mae Peter, and his family. The minutes from the previous monthly meeting were read, corrected and approved.

All correspondence was read and all officers' reports were given, corrected and approved.

We had one transfer to our lodge, which was voted on and accepted.

President Bobbye Johnson brought to our attention that on June 2, 1996, our lodge will be hosting the "Rose Benefit" which will feature a shrimp boil. It will start at 12 p.m. and continue to 5 p.m.

Lodge 177, Academy Supports Soft Ball League Lodge 177 President Louis Driska presents Terry McKay a check in the amount of $150 to support the Little River Little League Softball Association.

183, Arlington Reports on March Meeting

The March 11, 1996, meeting of Lodge 183, Arlington was called to order at 7 p.m. by President Jeanne Roznos. A total of 23 members, one guest and honored guest Jerry Kucera, District Three Field Representative, were in attendance.

All officers were present. Secretary Ken Cepak read the minutes from the February 12, 1996, meeting and they were approved as read.

Communications received was the "President's Letter for March," which was read by Jeanne Roznos.

All reports were given and accepted as read by their chairpersons.

Under old business, the Audit Committee reported the books have been audited and all is balanced.

A report was given on the lodge workshop and lodge incentive banquet. From our lodge, 15 members attended. The Home Office did an excellent job hosting this event.

Inez Greenlees gave a report on the Convention to be held June -9-12, 1996, at the Convention Center in Arlington.

The family night social scheduled for March 29, 1996, was to be a fried fish dinner with members eating for half-price.

At last, the rains came and what a welcome that was. Even though we could have used more, we won't complain. We are thankful for every little drop.

The Circle met on March 14, 1996.

President Sadie Kubin welcomed 28 members and five guests. Our guests were Frank Laznovsky, Joe Vlk, Julius Podhrasky, Charles Kosarek and Jerry Kohn.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, followed by a moment of silence in memory of Bob Zvolanek, William Bouska and Henry Patak.

Secretary Linda Trojacek read the minutes and Acting Treasurer Sylvia Laznovsky gave the financial report. The minutes and the financial report were approved as read.

The sunshine report was presented by Stacie Hejny. A get-well card and money gift was sent to Sister Bertha Podhrasky and a sympathy card was sent to Sister Mary Patak and Sister Anne Zvolanek.

Sister Sylvia Laznovsky announced that the Sokol Slet will be held in Ennis, Texas, on May 31, June 1 and 2. The SPJST Convention will be held on June 9 (registration), June 10, 11 and 12 at the Convention Center in Arlington, Texas.

Stanislav and Jana Zika from Prague, Czech Republic, are visiting their relatives, Sister Sylvia Laznovsky, her father Frank Laznovsky, Lil and Larry Laznovsky and family in Ennis, Texas.

We hope to see them at our April meeting. They are enjoying the sights and visiting relatives. I heard that Larry, who went to Washington, D.C. on business, took them along. That was nice.

Sister Alene and Willie Skrivanek are the proud great-grandparents of their seventh great-grandchild, Joshua Kyle Zapletal. Proud parents are Danny and Yvonne Zapletal; big sister is Madalyn Nicole; grandparents are Janice and Joe Landfeld and Pat and Raymond Zapletal; great-grandparents are Agnes Landsfeld, Leda Zapletal and Mr. Muhlstein of West, Texas. Quite a family!

Alene and Willie Skrivanek are two up on me on the number of great-grandchildren. My fifth great-grandchild, Ashlyn Marie, was born on March 14. Proud parents are Rhonda and Richard Roberts.

Ashlyn has two brothers and two sisters.

Her proud grandparents are Pamela and Carl (Tommy) Roberts. She also has other grandparents and great-grandparents.

After our Circle's meeting last month, several from the Circle drove to the farm and we had a party. That is, we celebrated March birthdays. The birthday celebrants were Georgia Tupy and Adell Vlk. Sister Libbie Wisniewski served good refreshments and had a basket of gifts for which we each drew a number. Jerry Kohn was lucky to have drawn a lottery ticket worth $2.

We missed Bob Zvolanek's presence at the party. That day, March 14, was his birthday. He would have been 87 years young.

Plans are underway for the 21st annual Fort Bend County Czech Fest.

To kick off the 1996 Fort Bend County Czech Fest, Dostal's Jewelers in downtown Rosenberg will once again sponsor the popular Miss Czech Fest Pageant which is open to residents of Fort Bend County. The 1995 Czech Fest queens include Ashley Zotyka, Little Miss Czech Fest, a third grader at Taylor Ray Elementary School in Rosenberg; Junior Miss Czech Fest, Natasha Lev, fifth grader at Taylor Ray; and Miss Czech Fest, Dana Calhoun, currently a freshman at B.F. Bill Dostal, whose grandparents came to this country from Czechoslovakia in the early 1900s and settled in Rosenberg in 1936, has been involved with Czech Fest for many years. He has sponsored the Miss Czech Fest contest since 1990 because he feels it is important to keep Czech culture and heritage alive for future.generations. The Dostal Family has had a jewelry store in Rosenberg since 1937 and Dostal's son, Chris, a fourth generation jeweler, recently custom-designed the impressive medal given to each of the queens representing Little Miss, Junior Miss and Miss Czech Fest.

Dostal's also provides each queen with flowers, banners and other items appropriate for her reign.

The annual Czech Fest also features a Kolache Bake-off with five categories including fruit, sausage, miscellaneous, sweet breads, and commercial. Annual Repka Reunion

On Sunday, April 21, 1996, we will celebrate the 28th annual Repka Reunion.

Please join us at the SPJST Lodge 88 Hall at 1435 Beall Street in Houston, Texas, for a fun time with family and friends. We will serve our famous barbecue at 12 noon. The cost is $5 for adults and $2.50 for children, plus $1 per family to cover the rental fee for the kitchen and dining areas.

We ask that you bring a side dish or dessert. We also need to know how many people to prepare for, so please send your money, along with the number of people who plan to attend. We need to know by April 8.

The officers decided to limit auction items to ten due to time restraints.

The Lost Prairie and Komensky former students, teachers, trustees and their friends will gather for their reunion on Sunday, April 21 at the Lost Prairie School building.

Youth Letters Section Lodge 4, Hallettsville Youth Member Enjoys Parade Dear Readers, On Saturday, March 2, I participated in the Victoria Livestock Show Parade on the District Six Youth float. It was so cold in the morning that we saw ice on the leaves along the curb. It warmed up by parade time, though, and it was fun waving at all of my family and friends.

We won a trophy for our float for being the farthest traveling float since SPJST Home Office is in Temple.

Dear Members and Friends, It's Springtime! Cyclone Youth Club invites you to come celebrate the season at the "Swing into Spring" fun day this

Sunday, April 14 at Flag Hall in Cyclone from 2 to 5 p.m. The activities begin with our April meeting.

Volleyball and other games will be played and refreshments will be served.

SPJST and Cyclone Youth Club membership benefits will be presented, and door prizes will be awarded.

An egg-citing after-Easter hunt will be one of the afternoon's attractions. Many, many eggs filled with lots of goodies will be waiting to be found. And many of those eggs will contain some special prizes. Although the Easter Bunny's big day will be over on April 14, he will be cleverly hiding somewhere at Flag Hall.

The person who finds him will receive a special prize. After all, the Easter Bunny always saves the best places for last!

Everyone is invited to this "Swing into Spring" fun day. Our goal is to show you the good times and fun that Cyclone Youth Club and the SPJST offer. Parents, of course, are always invited.

The Czech alphabet possesses the ability of rendering the quantity of vowels by the use of the 'earka, and the palatal sound of the three consonants, t', g.

To further increase the number of sounds and letters, the haeek or caret is used for some hushing sounds. r—r As indicated previously, the following are hard consonants: d, t, n, h, ch, k and r. The "neutral" consonants b, p, v, f, m, 1, s, and z, are followed by either i, or y, Y, according to their origin or derivation.

Capitals are not used for emphasis or for news headlines in Czech. On the whole the use of capital letters is rather restricted in Czech.

Here are other important points in spelling: Pronouns and possessive adjectives of the POLITE-FORMAL usage are capitalized, as are those of the FAMILIAR-INFORMAL usage: Vy, Yam, Vág: Ty, Tvfij, Tobe. The latter are ALWAYS in caps; the polite form is capitalized only when referring to a group (plural), then the pronouns are not capitalized.

A common error made by many Czechs in this area is that when they use the formal Vy, Vas, Vam, they use a PLURAL verb, although they are addressing only one person. WRONG: Vy, (1 person) jste v6era jeli do mesta.

RIGHT. Vy jste jel do mesta. DO NOT USE A PLURAL VERB UNLESS YOU ARE SPEAKING TO MORE THAN ONE PERSON. The pronoun jd is not capitalized; neither do we capitalize adjectives and adverbs indicating nationality. (This is done in English). Ex., Main 6esku 2enu. (I have a Czech wife). Mluvime 6esky. (We speak Czech).

One big difference in English and Czech punctuation has to do with the use of commas.
