Lodge 107, Floresvme takes top honors in domino tournament Lodge 17, New Tabor was the site for the Twelfth Annual Straight Domino Tournament. A total of 40 enthusiastic players, representing ten lodges from around the state, played in the March 9 tournament.

State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Frank Klinkovsky welcomed the players.

District One Director Andrew Vavra and District Seven Director Bob Bayer were recognized for being present. District Director Bob Bayer also played in the tournament.

After four games, a delicious noon meal was served by Lodge 17, New Tabor. Afterwards, four more games were played by all players. At the end of regulation play, five teams posted six wins and two losses — all tied for first place! This is where the excitement began. After five additional games, the results were as follows: First Place Team Joe Pavliska and Bob Bayer Lodge 107, Floresville Second Place Team Carol Petty and Melissa Wiederhold Lodge 17, New Tabor Third Place Team Gary Zwernemann and Donnie Paul Lodge 17, New Tabor Fourth Place Team Johnny Kelarek and Garry Kelarek Lodge 24, Cyclone Fifth Place Team William Smetanka and Kenneth Marek Lodge 24, Cyclone Lodge 17, New Tabor won the plaque for 1996 for winning most games. New Tabor fielded six teams in the tournament.

Sincere thanks is extended to everyone who played in or supported this tournament. Everyone really seemed to enjoy the day and the fellowship. Special thanks to Lodge 17 for their hospitality and the great job they did hosting the tournament. Thank you, too, to Director Vavra and Irma Klinkovsky for helping to keep score. We look forward to seeing all of you again at the 1997 tournament.

I have been a member of the SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor for 44 years. I have served as Vice President for three years and President for 15 years. I have also held the office of District Two Treasurer for five years and President of District Two for two years. I am currently a sales representative for Lodge 29, Taylor.

I have also served on the A.S.C.S. County Committee, Williamson County Farm Bureau Director, President of the Bell-Milam-Falls Water Corporation and I am a member of the Granger Brethren Church where I am presently on the Board of Elders.

To: Mr. Johnnie Krizan, Secretary From: Lodge 183, Arlington Lodge 183 proposes the following changes to the Supreme By-Laws: 1. Supreme Lodge, page 3 First sentence to read: The Supreme Lodge is composed of a president, vice president, secretary-treasurer, financial secretary, and seven directors.

2. Article 19, (page 16) to read: A licensed attorney, with prior approval by the board, must attend each meeting, and shall give the committee legal advice.

3. Article 33, paragraph 20, (b) 2, page 27, to read: The Supreme Lodge is required to maintain a list of competent attorneys, their respective areas of legal expertise, their geographic areas, and their contracting fees.

4. Article 33 add paragraph 20, (b) 2, (1) The Supreme Lodge has the responsibility, when required, to contract for legal services, to negotiate attomey(s) fees (which may vary depending on the geographic area and/or case complexity). A confidential performance record will be maintained and is to be used when selecting attorneys for new cases. When all considerations are equal, preference will be given to SPJST members.

5. Article 33, add paragraph 20, (b), 2 (2) The Supreme Lodge has the obligation to review every violation of the by-laws, and obtain legal assistance when appropriate for prompt remedial action.

6. Article 41, Legal Advisor Delete entirely.

Pasadena, Texas Dear Brother Krizan: I would like to submit a change in a By-Law which I believe would be for the good of our Society.

Please refer to Article 60, page 53 of our present Supreme Lodge By-Laws from the 1992 Convention. The change I am proposing is actually a matter of changing one word "regular" to "majority" of meetings, but this change would make a tremendous difference in the process of electing officers of the lodges.

Article 60 - to read: In nominating a candidate for local lodge office only those members who attend the lodge functions on a regular basis and attend a majority of the lodge meetings should be elected. Also a member on suspension, for whatever reason, will not be elected to a position of responsibility in the lodge.

Due to the fact that a delegate to our convention must attend the majority of their lodge meetings for three years prior to the convention date, I think an officer of a lodge is just as important, or moreso, than a delegate, and an officer candidate should also attend a majority of his/her lodge meetings for the previous year to be nominated.

I hope you agree and will assist us to amend Article 60.

From the Supreme Lodge Dear Members of the By-Law Committee: The following are recommendations for proposed changes in the Society's ByLaws which were approved during the January Supreme Lodge meeting and are being submitted to you for your consideration.

Article 32 (a): Change regular meetings of the Supreme Lodge from bi-monthly to quarterly.

Reason: This will follow the dates the Supreme Lodge has to make its reports on the various state and federal agencies.

Article 104 (a): Change to read: "No one individual or corporation may have total loans exceeding $175,000.00. This limitation does not apply to SPJST lodge buildings and present S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes.

Reason: The value of property has increased significantly over a period of time.

Due to this increase, the Society has been unable to provide loans to some of our members.

Article 104 (b): Change to read: "In the event the application does not exceed $25,000.00, such inspection shall be made by the director within whose district the offered security is situated. For application ranging from $25,001.00 to $60,000.00, inspections shall be made by the director whose district the offered security is situated in, along with one other director. For applications ranging from $60,001.00 and higher, inspections shall be made by the director within whose district the offered security is situated, together with two other directors. Such appraisal report must be delivered to the Supreme Lodge immediately. The Supreme Lodge may obtain a credit report on any application where it deems it necessary or advisable. In refinancing of existing SPJST loans only one director shall be required to make the inspection. Effective immediately."

Reason: By reducing the number of directors on small loans, the mortgage loan, application fee on smaller loans could possibly be reduced thus making our smaller loans more competitive.

Article 94A The official organ of society is called "Vestnik." It is published every 2nd and 3rd Friday of each month and is mailed to all premium, paying members on their request.

Reason for 2nd Friday is to have lodge notification on those lodges that meet 2nd 3rd weekend of the month. 4th Friday will have notification of all news pertaining to those lodges that meet 4th weekend and 1st weekend.

Article 94B Increase Vestnik by 12 pages to take care of correspondence each issue.

Article 94C All photos submitted by lodges shall be returned by Editor quarterly.

These changes in Vestnik are necessary because of the cost of printing and postage.

Lodge 133, San Antonio In accordance to and in compliance of Article 20 of the SPJST By-Laws, Lodge 133, San Antonio wishes to submit the following recommendations of By-Laws to the By-Law Committee and the delegates to the 27th Quadrennial convention which will be held in June in Arlington, Texas.

Article 27 add Article g: An individual shall not be over 75 years of age at the time of the convention.

Article 28: Members of the Supreme Lodge assume the duties of their respective offices on their election.

Remove the rest of the by-law. There is no reason for the SPJST to pay six months of salary to the old officer for the time remaining on his contract. Even the President of the United States maintains his position until the end of the calendar year. This bylaw questions the honesty and integrity of any officer.

Article 30: a. In the event of the death or resignation of a Supreme Lodge officer, the Board of Directors shall fill only the vacated office. Present officers should not be removed from their elected position to fill the vacated office.

We, Lodge members of 133, believe that the Supreme Lodge should not have the power to fill vacancies by appointing a present officer to the vacated position. This creates two appointed officers in the Lodge.

Article 36B: Eliminated this section. Since the editor has a permanent office at SPJST headquarters with a computer and fax, Article B is not needed.

Article 43B: Eliminate this article because the president is the head of the society and he is responsible for the agenda and carrying out. A Chairman of the Board is not needed.

Article 46: Add after annually, as in Article 1-i and Article 85.

Article 47: Add after committee as per 1-j and Article 85.

Recommendation: The proposed security for a mortgage lop must be inspected by one Director of the District in which the proposed security is located; or by a certified appraiser, if deemed necessary. A letter of recommendation from the Director must accompany his or her report.

All applications for a loan must be accompanied with a copy of the latest Tax Appraisal District Appraisal Statement showing assessed valuation of the proposed security; the Directors inspection value must not be less than the tax appraisal districts' value. The Board is to decide what other supporting data such as pictures is required.

All applications are subject to the approval of a majority of the SPJST District Directors, which approval would be had by mail or by fax. Once it has met the approval of a majority of the District Directors, it will then be forwarded to the Investment Committee at the Home Office for their review and action.

Lodge #87 would also like to recommend the maximum amount of the loan be increased to $150,000 and a maximum duration of 30 years.

Reason: The overall cost of securing the proposed loan will be decreased, thus allowing a more affordable application fee, yet there will be sufficient safety in relying on the value of the security.

We hope you will consider this needed change in the by-laws. Thanks for your attention to this matter.

From the Publication Committee Recommendation No. 1 to the By-Laws Explanation: The Czech language section of the Vestnik provides a popular outlet for our Czech language reporters and feature contributors. Among Vestnik readers—particularly those of Czech descent—there appears to be an ever-increasing awareness and desire to learn more about their ancestry and the lands from where they came. In an effort to respond to these needs, the Publication Committee strongly recommends that the "Czech Language" section of the Vestnik evolve to become more of a "Czech Studies" section. Such a section could incorporate articles dealing with Czech history, geography, language and current events. To accommodate a greater number of readers, a significant portion of the Czech studies material would be printed in the English language. This would not affect the Vestnik's longstanding tradition to print letters and important feature articles in the Czech language.

Therefore, let the recommendation read, as follows: (Changes are in bold type.)

Article 96. (a.) The Vestnik shall contain material grouped into sections, including original editorial articles, various reports, a youth section and a Czech studies section, with material in both the English and Czech language. (h,) Delete {As this will be covered under section (a).}

Article 85A: Add 1-i and 46C. Recommendation No. 2 to the By-Laws Article 85B: Add 47.

Article 94: Change published each week to 2nd Friday and 3rd Friday of each month. Increase the Vestnik by 12 pages to help carry the extra load of correspondence if needed.

We likewise understand that the by-law in reference to the formation of new lodges is not workable. However, we question who gave the Supreme Lodge the right to make decisions in violation of the by-laws. We believe the by-law needs to be reworked so that the Supreme Lodge is not in violation of the by-laws by establishing lodges however they wish. We dispute the manner in which the new San Antonio Lodge was numerically created. The decision to create the new lodge was made despite the fact that President Jarolyn, Popp told Leonard Mikeska that there would be no problem with having Mr. Koch as a sales representative. However, the decision to create a new lodge had already been made. The manner taken by the Supreme Lodge in this issue was certainly not done in fraternal fashion. The reason this lodge was created was primarily because of "how those people in Lodge 133 are."

Explanation: Since the 26th SPJST Convention in 1992, the role of the Editor has evolved to encompass additional and significant responsibilities, including the development and publication of promotional literature for the SPJST on a statewide and local lodge level and the development of various projects and media relations, particularly on a statewide level. All of these things being in addition to the time-honored role as Editor of the Vestnik. Therefore, let the recommendation read that: "Effective immediately, the position of Editor shall henceforth be stated as 'Director of Communications,' in all references; and let it also be stated, that in light of the evolving role of communications in our Society, the Publication Committee shall henceforth be referred to as the 'Communications Committee,' in all references."

Recommendation No. 3 to the By-Laws Explanation: In that the Editor (Director of Communications) is a statewide elected position; and, owing to the important role that communications plays in the development and growth of the SPJST, let the recommendation read that: "The Editor (Director of Communications) shall henceforth be a full participant in meetings of the Supreme Lodge—in every capacity—except that the Editor (Director of Communications) shall be a non-voting member of this body."

Computer technology and computer relayed information (via the Internet) is transforming the way America does business. We are witnessing the birth of a technology which will be as dynamic as the introduction of the printing press, radio and television.

The SPJST has an opportunity—now—to get in on the ground floor in terms of development.

Dear Members of the By-Law Committee: Lodge #87 would like to submit the following recommendation for a proposed change in the Society's By-Laws.

In addition to the conventional "face to face" marketing that we are accustomed to, more and more businesses are also making their products and services available to customers via on-line computer networks. As that relates to our marketing system: It is conceivable that in the not-to-distant future, individuals will have the ability to purchase life insurance via computer. The time is now for the SPJST to position itself to take advantage of this opportunity. By applying a dedicated effort, the SPJST can establish itself as a leader in the area of on-line fraternal marketing.

The Publication Committee strongly recommends that the SPJST take such steps as necessary to establish a leadership role in the area of computerized on-line marketing, via the Internet. Further, we recommend that the Supreme Lodge officers appoint a Home Office committee to include the Editor (Director of Communications) and a representative from each department to explore the opportunities which exist in this new and emerging field. This committee shall then make recommendations to the Supreme Lodge, pursuant to developing this new technology for the benefit of the membership and growth of the SPJST. *** Recommendation No. 5 to the By-Laws Explanation: In that the local lodge reporter plays an important and visible role in the development of the local lodge, let the recommendation read that the reporter shall henceforth be listed as a local lodge officer.

Lodge Letters Section 4.001=0000

State Horseshoe Tournament Adds Washer Pitching Tournament In conjunction with the State Horseshoe Tournament on April 27, we are adding a new category on a trial basis—washing pitching for ages 16 and up. We will accept only team players this year. There is no limit to the number of teams per lodge. Teams must register with the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator on or before April 25.

First, second, third and fourth place teams will receive SPJST calculators and recognition in the Vestnik. If there is an interest in the category of washer pitching, we will seek Supreme Lodge Board approval to continue this tourney as a part

of the State Horseshoe Tournament. A member can only play in one category— horseshoes or washers.

The entry fee for these tournaments is $6 per member and this includes the snacks and the noon meal. SPJST membership is required to participate in the tournament.

We hope you will participate in one of these contests and enjoy the fellowship with other SPJST members.

I,odge 1, Fayetteville to Host District One Spring Meeting On Sunday, March 17, at the SPJST Hall in Fayetteville, the officers and directors of Lodge 1 met with District One President Randy Gaas of Lodge 17, New Tabor, District One Youth Counselor Susan Skrabanek of Lodge 17, New Tabor, Assistant District One Youth Counselor Ann Schoenemann of Lodge 9, Snook, and District One Director Andrew Vavra to finalize plans for their district meeting scheduled for April 14, 1996.

As mentioned above, the date for the meeting will be April 14, 1996, starting with registration at 2 p.m. at the SPJST Lodge 1 in Fayetteville, Texas, on Highway 159. Everyone is invited to attend. Cold cuts, desserts and drinks will be served.

There will be a parade of the Little Miss SPJSTs and Little Mr. SPJSTs (ages three to five years) and those eligible from Lodge 1 are Kirbey Cufr, Ross Kovar, Jared Michalec, John Minarcik, Blake Rohde, and John Cufr. The following are eligible for the Mr. and Miss SPJST Contest (ages 18 to 22): Betty

Chovanec, Lee Chovanec, Christopher Drymalla, Kristen Drymalla, Shelly Marusik, Shanna Peschel, Scott Raska, Sherri Schramm and George Vasicek.

Also, during the quarterly meeting of Lodge 1, Fayetteville, members were advised of the recent improvements made at the SPJST Hall. These included the installation of a butane tank, donated by Bob and Lillie Mae Brightwell; the purchase of two 60,000 BTU heaters in the hall, with the labor being donated by Fayetteville Propane; paneling and painting the outdoor rest rooms, repairing the sheet rock on the stage, painting both the walls and floor of the stage, painting the roof of the red storage building and section of roof of the SPJST Hall, porches and handicapped ramp using labor provided by Fayette County Sheriff's Department.

Upon adjournment, refreshments were served.

Lodge Karel Jonas, No. 28, East Bernard to Meet April 14 Dear Members, On Easter Sunday (April 7), it will be time to set our clocks one hour forward.

The Daylight Savings Time foolishness and madness starts again.

Lodge Karel Jonas will hold its first meeting of Spring on the second Sunday, April 14 at 2 p.m. in the meeting room at 106 Leveridge Street, which is on the ground floor of the SPJST Hall building.

The agenda will be rather long for 50year pins will be presented to those recipients present in the meeting along with regular business.

Regarding the 50-year pins, there will be an officer from the Supreme Lodge to make the presentations.

A fraternal hour buffet luncheon will be held after the business meeting adjourns. At this writing there are no special plans as to the fare for the luncheon.

March Meeting Report The meeting was called to order at 2 p.m. on March 10 with a quorum present.

Reports were given on the officers' workshop as well as the regular reports. All were accepted as given. Several motions were made and passed to take care of business needing attention. The meeting lasted about an hour.

One of the reports announced two new members have been accepted into the lodge. They are a very young lady named Kelsey Lynn Godwin and a gentleman named F.R.Van Den Dries.

As to the fraternal hour buffet luncheon, all of the food and drinks were donated and there was enough to go around for everyone present.

It was good to see longtime member Sister Agnes Polasek again. She has had some medical problems that prevented her from attending meetings.

This writer wishes more of those longtime members would come to the meetings.

Sisters Agnes Pilcik and Agnes Kovar were missed at the meeting. These two ladies have different medical conditions that act up when the weather changes and this makes it very hard for them to attend.

We hope the weather will be better for the next meeting and they both are feeling better. Get well you two! We missed you!

There is one member who has been ill for a long time and has had to go back into the hospital. Brother Thomas R. Heaphy, Jr. has had problems with his leg and we hope this time everything heals up so he can leave the hospital walking.

29, Taylor Reports on March Meeting

SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor held its monthly meeting on Sunday, March 10, 1996, at 4 p.m. Everyone present stood in silent respect for deceased member Ruth Susan.

The roll call showed all officers pre-

sent except Elaine Machu, Carol Tallas, Jerry Tallas, LaVerne Eulenfeld, Gary Preusse and John Zak. A letter from the Supreme Lodge was read that Anna Holbec will be age 96 this year. We will honor her at our April meeting. Also, a thank-you card was read from the Alfred Trcka family for the use of the hall after Alfred's funeral.

We received a $100 check from the Supreme Lodge as a reward for the Summer Marathon membership drive.

We had 18 new members in this contest.

New members accepted into our lodge were Catherine Anntoinette Basile, Mark Louis Basile, Rosemary C. Stabeno, and Hilda S. Krueger.

Edwin Adamek announced that he is seeking the position of District Two Director and asked for his home lodge's support and everyone's support in the district.

May Fete Queens elected were Lisa Haag, May Queen, and Brittany Matoska, SPJST Queen.

The next meeting will be April 14 at 4 p.m. All members are invited to attend.

66, Waco Reports on March Meeting Lodge

The regular meeting of Lodge 66, Waco was held on March 17 with 31 adults and 17 youth in attendance and two guests, Brother Johnnie Krizan of Lodge 6 and Preston Dennis of Axtell.

The flags were presented by Sandra Trickett and Alicia Neslony. Candice McAdams led the Pledge of Allegiance and Justin Engelke recited the SPJST Motto. President John Engelke asked that all members stand for a moment of silence in memory of our deceased members, Brother Richard L. McGee, Brother Ernest Ray Hutyra, and Sister Michelle Nicole Cook. Sister Darlene Engelke, chairman of the Resolution Committee, read expressions of sympathy for the members who recently passed away. To the members of these families, we send our sincere condolences.

New members accepted were Brother Arnold E. Houston, Brother Steven A. Kucera, Sister Cathy J. Horton, Brother Ethan L. Horton, and Brother Zachary W. Horton and also, James Yates and Sister Gladys Yates (additional insurance). We welcome all the new members and look forward to their attendance at the meetings and to their participation in the lodge activities.

Sister Bonnie Pruitt read the minutes of the Board of Director's meeting held on March 6. All books have been sent to the CPA for tax preparations. She reported the stove problems have been taken care of and that the deep-fry was all right.

The use of our hall at no charge was approved for a fund raising event by Waco Center for Youth.

Sister Lucille Cervenka, chairman of the entertainment committee, reported members are to bring sandwiches for the April meeting. The committee will furnish the trimmings. A barbecue dinner will be served during the State Horseshoe Tournament on April 27 at Linden Hall. The youth club will provide ten dozen donuts and several members have agreed to make other donations.

Our Fraternal Activities Coordinator Sister. Mary Alice Langlotz was happy to

report there were 26 adults and five youth present for our game night on March 11.

She hoped those not coming will come out on April 8 at 7 p.m. to see how much fun we have. The teams participating in the Straight Domino Tournament held recently at Lodge 17, New Tabor were Bonnie Pruitt and George Pauling; Gladys Pustejovsky and Emma Ceska; and Ben Pustejovsky and Otis Ceska.

And, again, no trophies for Lodge 66.

But all of us thoroughly enjoyed the games, the fellowship, and the delicious meal and snacks. Members of Lodge 17 are to be commended for their hospitality.

Teams that participated in the 42 Tournament held at Lodge 29, Taylor were Ben Pustejovsky and Otis Ceska; Gladys Pustejovsky and Emma Ceska; and our father-son team, Weldon and Thomas Galler. Our congratulations to the Gallers of Lodge 66 for winning first place in the 42 tournament. Each received a beautiful trophy and a beautiful plaque for Lodge 66. Our thanks to Lodge 29 members who did an outstanding job in hosting this event with 38 teams participating.

Sister Emma Ceska of the Cheer and Condolence Committee reported sympathy cards were sent to Mr. and Mrs. Louie Veselka on the death of her father, Brother Frank R. Marek of Abbott; to Mr. and Mrs. John Engelke on the death of Brother Marek, her grandfather; and to Mr. and Mrs. Donald Gerik on the death of her father, Brother Ernest Ray Hutyra.

Also, our heartfelt sympathy is extended to Mr. and Mrs. Mike Cook of West on the trag i c death of their daughter, Sister Michelle Nicole Cook, age 15, and to Mr. and Mrs. Bob Hobbs also of West, on the tragic death of their son, Kyle, age 16.

Kyle and Nicole, students at West High School, were killed in an auto accident on March 4, 1996. The two were returning from a baseball game, postponed because of rain, when Kyle lost control of his pickup and hit a culvert on Tokio Road near West. Please remember all these families in prayer. A get-well card was sent to Luke Pruitt who recently had dental surgery. Luke is the grandson of Sister Bonnie Pruitt.

Brother Jerry Kucera, field representative for Districts Three and Four, congratulated the sales representatives of Lodge 66 and District Three for a job well done.

In 1995, there were 70 applications written for Lodge 66 and our lodge won the gold award with a check in the amount of $1,453.36. Brother Kucera reported he had met with four sales representatives of Lodge 66 concerning the Senior Life Policy, and anyone interested in this plan should contact him or any of the sales representatives. New members are always welcome, and Brother Kucera is looking forward to the Gold Award in 1996.

Sister Diana Engelke, youth leader, reported on activities for the youth. They had a kite flying contest; planned an Easter egg hunt; will participate in the March of Dimes Walk-a-Thon; will perform highway cleanup on April 20 at 10 a.m.; and will operate the kitchen on several dance nights. They will make a donation to purchase donuts for the horseshoe tournament. The youth club welcomes four new members, Holly, Anna, Amy and Whitney Dennis. There were 17 youth and five adults present for the meeting.

Brother Johnnie Krizan of Lodge 6, Cottonwood, visited Lodge 66 as the representative on the By-Law Committee from District Three. He presented a very informative report, reviewed recommended changes he had received, and

expressed his willingness to meet with delegates and members at any time.

Brother John Engelke discussed plans for a meeting to include delegates and members of all lodges in District Three.

This could be an open-forum meeting to discuss by-laws and recommendations so that these ideas could be sent to the By-' law Committee. Please refer to special articles in the Vestnik for details. There were fengthy discussions by delegates and members on several proposals and recommended changes.

Brother John Engelke was the only member present celebrating a March birthday. Happy Birthday, John, and to all our members not in attendance. A beautiful birthday cake was presented as the members sang the "Happy Birthday" song.

Dana McAdams was the winner of the door prize, and Sister Darlene Engelke was the winner in the 50/50 club.

Everyone enjoyed the delicious meal and the 42 games and card games that followed.

Our next meeting will be held at 2:30 p.m. on April 21. Please make plans to attend this important meeting as your input in needed.

79, Corpus Christi Plans Lodge Membership Dinner Lodge

Our March meeting had all officers present and six members in attendance.

We observed a moment of silence for Lydia Regmund, a departed member.

The minutes from -the February meeting and the treasurer's report were approved as read.

It was noted that our "pepper-upper," Jerry Elzner, is visiting in the Czech Republic. He was missed at the meeting.

A report was given on the very enjoyable workshop attended by the officers of Lodge 79. Guest speaker Linda Woodbury gave all who attended some sound ideas and thoughts. Things are not always as they seem, are they? We also enjoyed the delicious meals that were catered, and of course, we were very proud to get the gold incentive award earned by the members and sales representatives of Lodge 79.

Our March monthly $50 donation will go to the Women's Shelter of Corpus Christi.

Plans were made for our lodge membership to hold a complete professionally-catered meal at our next meeting on April 21. All members and prospective members should come at 12 noon with appetites to enjoy a delicious meal. We will eat at 12:30 p.m. and our regular monthly meeting will follow. A telephone committee will be contacting you to get a head count for the caterer. If you do not get a call, please call Jerry Elzner at 991-1746 or Jerry Sijansky at 9374324 and let them know. We are looking forward to seeing you.

Lodge 87, Temple Presents March 13 Meeting Minutes The meeting of Lodge 87, Temple was called to order at 7 p.m. by President Ed Reisner. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Ladis Navratil. Members stood in silence for deceased members.

The secretary read the minutes of the February 14 meeting and they were approved as read.

There was no treasurer's report.

New members accepted were Grace Cole, John Ferguson, Brenda Weaks and Thomas Brodie.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Don Alford gave his report which was approved.

The secretary read the correspondence.

The motion made and seconded that the easement requested by the City be granted as per attached documents attached to minutes. The motion was approved.

The motion was made and seconded to rent the hall for about two hours to Steve Stevens to conduct a retirement seminar for SPJST employees. The motion carried. Steve Stevens was our guest.

Thanks to Don and Norma Alford for the donation of the microwave oven.

The clean-up day of the hall was to he held March 23 at 10 a.m.

Don and Norma Alford will be in charge of the refreshments for the next meeting.

The meeting adjourned at 8:10 p.m.

97, Placedo Reports on March Meeting

Our lodge will be hosting the District Youth Achievement Day meeting in Victoria at the Community Center on July 7. Donna Vanek will be heading the food booth committee.

The meeting was adjourned and followed by refreshments and fellowship.

Our next meeting will be June 20, 1996, at the Victoria REA Building which includes a barbecue for all members and prospective members. We look forward to a big turnout by everyone.

Dear Readers, This was the first year that SPJST had an entry in the Victoria Livestock Show parade, and we sincerely want to thank the kindness and generosity shown to us by all our supporters Korczynski's, Mr. Jeff Forester of Kmart, Dr. Doug Hartman of Southwest Diesel Service, Mr. Ken Revel, Mr. Robert Dum, the SPJST Youth Clubs of Hallettsville and Taiton, Mrs. Joni Lange, C.J. Novak, and our Home Office in Temple. We also had our talented president, Mrs. Yvonne Garrett, spending many hours and much effort pulling it all together.

With volunteers like these, we won the Ambassador's Award, topping all our excitement for the day. Thank you, Victoria, for a wonderful time!

Dear Readers, President Yvonne Garrett opened the March 14 meeting, welcoming all members and prospective members.

Minutes were read and financial reports were given by Dennis Vanek.

Mrs. Dorothy Fuzzell read a thank-you letter from the Texas Zoo of Victoria, thanking the lodge for the donation of aluminum cans. It was agreed that we will continue to collect the cans this year.

Mrs. Fuzzell also reminded members of recording fraternal activities for the upcoming year.

Lodge 97 sponsored a livestock show parade float which featured the State SPJST Queen and King. On display was a framed 8 x 10 photo and a trophy the float received for winning the Ambassador's Award, an award for the farthest traveled float.

Other business included reimbursing the youth club for a meeting and bowling party which was held in January, donating money to Christ's Kitchen, and sponsoring a softball team.

A report was given by Nicole Dum on youth club activities for the quarter. A thank-you letter was submitted to the Victoria Advocate for everyone's help and support of the livestock parade float.

President Yvonne Garrett gave a report on the upcoming Polka Fest and encouraged all members to sell raffle tickets. A compact CD player will be awarded to the person selling the most tickets.

142, Houston Reports on March Meeting

Lodge

At 2 p.m., President Keith Kieschnick called our monthly meeting to order.

We had 29 members and two visitors

who stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag. All remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our departed Brother Rudolph Cernuch. May his soul rest in eternal peace.

The minutes were read by Secretary Alice Jochen.

District Five Little Mr. SPJST is Christopher Schleider and our Mr. SPJST is Jason Hermis. Jason will represent us for the next four years and also at our Convention in June at Arlington.

Under correspondence, we all were pleased to hear the thank-you note from Brother Gene Veselka who thanked us all for thinking of him and our prayers for his return to health. Brother Gene, we are still constantly keeping you in our prayers along with all our members while they are on their road to recovery, including and especially remembering Robert Boyd, who was on the sick list and is recovering from surgery.

All officers and committee reports were read.

Visitors recognized were Amy McLelland and Jo Buri.

Barbara Boyd, our vice president, gave an interesting report on the recent workshop. This was a good report on changing times and positive attitudes.

Our lodge will have a food drive and members are urged to bring a canned food or other non-perishable item to the meeting which we may contribute to the food pantry.

In addition to our present door prizes, it was voted to give a door prize for any member who has a birthday during the month of the meeting. The March birthday door prizes went to Sidon Tumis (March 17), Rosie Tumis (March 24), and Nelson Jochen (March 12).

Congratulations to the birthday members.

Other door prize winners (from the register book) were Alice Jochen, Millie Linhart, Pat Schleider and Ruth Kieschnick. They each received $5.

We also had a refreshment door prize drawing and the winners were Frank Tumis, Adela Stein, Mary Ann Kieschnick, and Elizabeth Hermis.

The capsule drawing for $50 went unclaimed due to the absence of Lora A. Mabry and Joshua Lee Brogdan. Next month's capsule prize goes to $60. Come to our meeting on April 14, 1996, at 2 p.m. You could be the "lucky one."

in the Making March 24 Proclaimed "Libbie Baitek Day" in Academy

History

History was made on Sunday, March 24, 1996, as members, friends, and relatives gathered at Lodge 177, Academy to celebrate and recognize Libbie Bartek as the lodge's first State Fraternalist of the Year. Words cannot express the joy felt

by Libbie and her family and friends as they celebrated the afternoon together.

In addition to an afternoon of celebration, a short program was presented with several guest speakers. Reverend Al Newby, pastor of Seaton Brethren Church, spoke on Libbie's accomplishments and dedication. Connie Madsen, Director of Volunteer Services for King's Daughters Hospital, told of Libbie's active involvement as a volunteer at the hospital and how her warm personality enables Libbie to be an outstanding volunteer as she works with patients at the hospital. Frank Klinkovsky, SPJST State Fraternal Activities Coordinator, spoke and presented Libbie with a picture of herself that will be displayed in the SPJST Museum at the Home Office.

Lodge 177, Academy Pays Tribute to Fraternalist Libbie Bartek Sunday, March 24, 1996 Lodge 177, Academy member Libbie Bartek was honored by friends and family with a reception in her honor at the lodge hall on Sunday, March 24. Pictured here, Ronnie White, mayor of Little-River Academy presents Sister Bartek with an "Outstanding Citizen Achievement Award" on behalf of the community.

Lodge Vice President, also spoke on Libbie's behalf reminiscing of all Libbie's wonderful accomplishments.

Lodge President Louis Driska presented Libbie with a personalized watch as a gift from members of the lodge in recognition of her achievement. Joanne Smith, Lodge Fraternal Activities Coordinator, read the letter which was submitted to the Home Office nominating Libbie. The last presentation was made by Ronnie White, mayor of Little River-Academy, proclaiming March 24 as "Libbie Bartek Day" in the community. Mayor White also presented Libbie with an "Outstanding Citizen Achievement Award" for the community.

After the program, Libbie received a standing ovation from her friends and relatives.

All present spoke highly of Libbie and her accomplishments. Libbie takes pride in everything she does and always does her work with a smile. That's what you think about when you think of Libbie Bartek—happiness and joy! Great job, Libbie!

Lodge Vice President Leonard Mikeska and wife, Dorothy, were also on hand to share the afternoon with Libbie.

In the absence of President El Gene Eckermann, Vice President Orville Kunkel called the meeting to order with the Pledge of Allegiance.

Vice President Kunkel reported on the workshop that he and Mrs. Kunkel, Arnold and Mrs. Peters, Leroy and Ora Lee Levien attended at Lodge 47, Seaton.

He encouraged other members to attend upcoming workshops. The group also attended the banquet at Lodge 24, Cyclone following the workshop.

The audit committee reported on the outcome of the books.

An expression of condolence is being extended to the family of Darren Kessler.

Congratulations went to Breanna and Dr. Patrick Clemons for their birthdays.

The serving committee was extended one month and they chose chicken-fried steak for our next meeting.

We will meet on April 18 at 7 p.m. instead of April 11, due to the antique fair.

We decided our fund raiser will he a fried chicken dinner on Sunday, May 19, 1996. We will serve plates to eat at the hall and to go. We will also sell fried chicken to go. The cost for adults will be $5 and children are $2.50. Serving will begin at 11 a.m. and continue until 1 p.m. Desserts will be available for purchase. Members are asked to bring baked items.

The general clean-up was scheduled for Friday, March 15 at 4 p.m.

The sick list included (that we knew of) Jessie Macat, Sadie Siptak, and Jo Ann Schovajsa.

Notice the lodge meeting date changes. We will not have a meeting in April. The May meeting will be on the first Sunday, May 5, 1996, at 3 p.m. The May meeting will be a social meeting.

Bleiblerville SPJST Lodge 201 held their regular monthly meeting Sunday, March 10, 1996, at 2 p.m.

The meeting was called to order by the chairman, Mrs. Elaine Duron. Secretary Mrs. Lillie Mae Shupak read the minutes from the previous meeting and they were approved. The treasurer's report was given for the hall account and lodge account. All correspondence was read by the secretary, Mrs. Lillie Mae Shupak.

The lodge earned the first step award for 1995 and was presented a $200 check for this award.

Edwin and Helen Velek Celebrate Golden Wedding Anniversary Edwin A. and Helen Velek celebrated their 50th Anniversary on January 21, 1996, at the Cockpit Bar and Grill in Houston. Hosting the celebration were their niece Shirley Todd and family. All the nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends joined together and made the big dinner and party a great success that everyone enjoyed.

Memoriam Resolution of Sympathy

We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge Slavonic Linden No. 66, Waco, Texas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest and sincere sympathy to the family of our departed brother, RICHARD L. MAGEE of Yucca Valley, California, who died February 10, 1996, at the age of 76 years.

Graveside services were held Saturday, March 2, 1996, at Oakwood Cemetery with the Rev. Matt Hall officiating.

Brother Richard was born in Boyne Falls, Michigan. He served in the United States Navy from 1939 until he retired in 1959 as a chief petty officer. He was a member of the No. 240 Fleet Reserve Association in Waco, VFW and 13 years with the United States Postal Service. He was a member of Lodge 66 since April, 1967. His first wife, Ella, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his present wife, Helen T. Magee; one brother, Leo Magee of Michigan; three nieces and three nephews.

rites was conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4819 of West at West Brethren Cemetery.

Brother Ernest was born in West and attended Tokia and West Schools and later attended Hill Junior College. He joined the Army in 1943 and was wounded in action while in Germany. He was a member of the VFW of West and an SPJST Lodge 66, Waco member since August, 1981. He was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Clements Hutyra, who died in July, 1982.

Brother Hutyra is survived by his companion, Nell Ratliff of Chalk Bluff; three sons, Thomas of Dallas, James of Fort Worth, and Jerry of Waco; three daughters, Barbara Gerik of West, Carol Herdman of Hewitt and Brenda Davis of Mesquite; three brothers, John Hutyra, Raymond Hutyra, both of Woodway, and Ben Hutyra of Elm Mott; 13 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

A rosary was recited Wednesday, March 6 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption.

Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Thursday, March 7 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's with Rev. Edward Karasek as celebrant. Burial took place in St. Mary's Cemetery in West.

Sister Nikki was a sophomore at West High School where she took an active role in sports. She was a member of the West F.F.A., the Texas Youth Rodeo Association, and the Texas High School Rodeo Association Regent 10 where she was named 1994-95 Rookie of the Year.

Sister Nikki was a student director and the 1995 Champion Pole Bender. She was a member of the West Longhorn Club where she was 1995 Sweetheart.

She was also a member of the West Fair and Rodeo Club and St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption. Nikki was an SPJST Lodge 66, Waco member since August, 1988.

Sister Nikki is survived by her parents, Mike and Joy Cook of West; one brother, Cody Cook of West; paternal grandparents, Doyle and Juanita Cook of West; maternal grandparents, J.T. and Dorothy Yarek of Fort Worth.

Resolution of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 93, Hobson, Texas, in behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge sister, ERNA BERTHA LINHART, who died on February 5, 1996, at the age of 87 years, two months, and 28 days.

She was born on November 7, 1908, to Gerhardt and Martha Wieting Pargmann in Nordheim, Texas. On November 9, 1927, she married Walter Linhart in Runge, where the young couple made their home until 1957 when they moved to Victoria. A son and a daughter were born to them.

Sister Linhart was a homemaker, a member of SPJST for 29 years and a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church.

Survivors are her daughter, Thelma Barker of Terrell, Texas; her son, Walter Linhart of Sugarland, Texas; one sister, Hertha Buesing of Runge, Texas; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. John Waak on February 8, 1996, at Janssen Funeral Home in Runge.

Interment followed in the Runge Cemetery.

of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge Jaro No. 130, Dallas, wish to extend our sympathy to the family of BOHUMIL (BOB) ZVOLANEK, who died February 29, 1996.

Bob was born March 14, 1909, in Lubun, Czechoslovakia, and arrived in the United States of America at the age of 18. He marreid Anne Tupy on August 25, 1937.

In World War Two, he spent 15 months as an interpreter and was wounded. He received the good conduct, EAME Theatre Ribbon with two Bronze Service Stars, American Theatre and Victory Medal.

He was employed by Borden Milk Company for 30 yers.

Bob served as president of Lodge Jaro No 130, Dallas. He was a member of the Dallas Brethren Church, WFLA No. 401, Sokol, Dallas Czech Singers, Dallas Scottish Rite, Czech Culture Society, Masonic Lodge No. 32, and VFW No. 6796. He was the proud owner of rare puppets he brought from Czechoslovakia, , and he donated them to the Czech Museum in Temple, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his par ents Joe and Anna Zvolanek.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Anne Zvolanek; two brothers, Joe Zvolanek and Edwin Zvolanek of Temple; sisters-in-law; brother-in-law; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.

Services were held Saturday, March 2, 1996, at the Restland Wildwood Chapel with Reverand Michael Fox officiating.

Internment was'at Restland Memorial Park.

of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 73, Seymour, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest and most sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother, GEORGE EDWARD HOLUB, who passed away Monday, September 11, 1995, at the age of 71 years in a Wichita Fallas hospital.

Rosary was at 7 p.m. at Sacred Hearth Catholic Church. Funeral mass was at 10 a.m. Wednesday, September 13 at the Sacred Heart Church with the Rev. Bart Landwermeyer and the Rev. Richard Flores officiating. Burial was in the St. John's Cemetery in Bomarton, Texas, with military graveside rites conducted by 'VFW Post No. 7871. Arrangements were under the direction of Archer Funeral Home.

Mr. Holub was born August 10, 1924, in Bomarton, Texas. He served in the Army during World War Two. He and Margaret Marek were married June 31, 1942, in Bomarton. He was a lifetime resident of Baylor County and operated Holub Tire and Service since 1967. He served as director of the Seymour Housing Authority and as a board member of the Seymour Hospital Authority.

He was a member of the Sacred Hearth Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, SPJST Lodge 73, Seymour, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7871, and the Sacred Hearth Parish Council.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Margie Barton of Seymour and Monica Holub of Wichita Falls; four sons, Paul, Phil, Tommy and Johnny, all of Seymour; two sisters, Georgene Hassis of Seymour and Mary Horne of Fort Worth; and nine grandchildren.

The family requests that memorials be made to a memorial of their choice.

May our departed brother rest in eternal peace and may his memory remain among us forever.

Czechoslovakian Easter Customs (From the book "Czech Reflections" by the McLennan - Hill Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society) Holy Wednesday Czech and Slovaks call the Wednesday of Holy Week "Ugly Wednesday." There is a superstition that anyone eating honey on this day will not be stung by serpents. The church bells are muffled, their place being taken by great wooden rattles in the church towers.

Holy Thursday In Czechoslovakia, Holy Thursday is called "Green Thursday." The hawthorn is supposed to weep on that day; according to tradition, it is the tree from which the crown of thorns was fashioned.

Parents send their children to the brooks to bathe on "Green Thursday;" it is a cure for laziness. At breakfast, the Czechs and Slovaks eat honey and "Judas cakes," cakes twisted like rope.

Lodge 84, Dallas Says "Let's Hear it for Chris Coker!"

Chris has had many great accomplishments. Not only has Chris served on the wrestling team for Lake Highlands the past three years, but he also placed first in District and Regional Champion and placed fifth in the Texas State Championships. He was also the Team Captain.

In addition to his wrestling success, Chris has also made academic achievements. He is a member of the National Honor Society, MuAlpha Theta Math Society and has been accepted to Texas A&M for the fall of 1996.

Chris has been active in the Boy Scouts Program. He received Life Rank and attended the 1995 World Jamboree in the Netherlands. Active all his life in the SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas, he was a State Duke as well as a District Three King.

We do, have evidence that Chris did, have some difficulty wrestling his way out of this difficult situation. In the match between Chris and the seat belt of this van, Chris finally accepted

Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club Wishes You a Happy Easter Dear Members and Friends, Happy Easter to you all from Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club members and leaders!

The Cyclone Youth Club will host a "Swing into Spring" fun day on Sunday, April 14 at Flag Hall in Cyclone. The activities begin at 2 p.m. with our April meeting.

Meeting activities will include information about summer youth club functions (Youth Achievement Day, summer camp, district trip). Active youth members will select the 1996 MayFete queen who will represent Cyclone Youth Club in the District May Fete and serve throughout the year as a goodwill ambassador for the youth club.

Games and refreshments will follow the meeting. SPJST and Cyclone Youth Club membership benefits will also be presented, and door prizes will be awarded.

An after-Easter egg hunt will be one of the afternoon's attractions. Many, many eggs filled with lots of goodies will be waiting to be found. And many of those eggs will contain some special prizes. Although the Easter Bunny's big day will be over on April 14, he will be cleverly hiding somewhere at Flag Hall.

The person who finds him will receive a special prize. After all, the Easter Bunny always saves the best places for last!

The March 24, 1996, meeting of Lodge 39, Bryan Youth Club was called to order at 1:20 p.m. by President Chad.

President Chad led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and members remained standing for a moment of silent prayer. The register was read. There were four members present and one adult. Guests introduced were Kip and Sloan, Matejka, Dlyan Roesler, and Victoria and Tiffani Everett.

The minutes were read and approved.

Fund raising plans for this month are having a garage sale and barbecue on April 27.

Youth members enjoyed having a spaghetti dinner. Refreshments were served by adults and children of the lodge.

Czech, and using stress and intonation.

1. In Czech, the accent is invariably on the first syllable:— PRA-ce, SKAkat, SKO-la.

2. In the case of 3 or more syllables, there is a secondary accent on the 3rd syllable: PRA-co-VA-ti, VZDE-la-VAti, ZA-palo-VA-ti.

3. One syllable prepositions form one single unit with the word following, and are always accented: Do Prahy (doprahy), po valce (povalce).

4. If the preposition consists of only one consonant, v, z, s, k— it must be joined in a single sound with the word following k yam kvam— (not ke vam): V Novem Yorku (not ye Novena Yorku).

5. Before other groups of consonants these prepositions are said in full and accented: VE stfedu, KE mne, SE mnou, ZE gkoly.

6. Prepositions are pronounced in full if the word following begins with the same sound: VE Vidni, KE kostelu, SE sestrou, ZE zeme. The reason for this is because double consonants are pronounced as single consonants in Czech: (Anna, cent4). A double vv or double kk are not pronounceable.

However, in a word like nejjemnejgi, the two j's are separated because nej is a superlative prefix. More on superlatives later.

7. Although the accent is always on the first syllable, it does not lengthen a short vowel following it, and we must not yield to the temptation to STRESS long vowels outside the first syllable.

8. Stress is not as strongly marked in Czech as in English, German, or Russian. The intonation (melody of the speech— its "musicalness"), that is, the rise and fall in the pitch of the voice, is not made up from as many tunes and patterns as in the above 3 languages. 10. Finally, this rule should probably be observed: if you're not sure which syllable is to be accented, don't accent any; this will be better than stressing the wrong one. Don't worry too much about stresses and intonation at this point, but make it a part of each lesson as we move along.
