You're Invited ...

I had the chance to visit last week with Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Lanita Anglin and discuss the upcoming Lodge Officers' Workshop set for February 24th. If you're a lodge officer and haven't made plans to attend, please consider doing so. It should be an interesting program. And, says Sister Anglin, "Please extend that invitation to all of our members who are looking for motivation and would like to attend." All she asks is that you let someone in her department know on or before February 20th that you are coming - so they can better plan for food.

The workshop itself will be held at Lodge 47, Seaton, located approximately seven miles east of Temple, just off State Highway 53.

Registration, including complimentary kolaches and coffee, starts at 9 a.m. The program starts at 10 a.m. The keynote speaker will be Linda Woodbury of Austin. A nationally acclaimed speaker and professional business woman, Ms. Woodbury has addressed conventions throughout the U.S. and Canada.

"Ms. Woodbury, who is blind, has developed personal and professional skills far beyond those that many sighted people may claim," says Sister Anglin.

Her topic for the SPJST workshop will be "Turning Obstacles Into Opportunities: A Better '96 and Beyond."

"The message is that diversity translates to innovation; change means challenge and excitement; leadership becomes respect for individual worth; and empowerment comes from restoring confidence," Sister Anglin explains.

Following the morning program, workshop attendees will enjoy a complimentary luncheon. A brief afternoon program will include a presentation by various Supreme Lodge officers. The day's program is as follows:

The SPJST Supreme Lodge has authorized reimbursement for one car per lodge to attend the workshop. Lodges receiving awards at the Awards Dinner at Lodge 24, Cyclone following the workshop will be authorized reimbursement for one additional car. The Vestnik received a nice letter last week from Ms. Lee Crawford, who is historian for the Burleson County Czech Heritage Museum in Caldwell, Texas. In her correspondence, Sister Crawford encourages Vestnik readers to share with the museum any information on any events, festivals, gatherings, etc. that will happen in your area.

The Burleson County Czech Heritage Museum is just one of the many groups located throughout Texas that is working to bring new life to Czech customs, traditions and language. Thanks, to all of these organizations and their dedicated members for sharing their stories in the

Vestnik.

Also appearing on page five in this week's paper is an article on Lodge 88, Houston member and Czech Instructor Bill Souchek who was recently honored by the Czech Heritage Society of Texas as the recipient of their Annual Czech Heritage Award. Thanks to CHS Trustee Board Chairman Marjorie Matula for submitting the article.

Those of you who know Brother Souchek know that he's a real prize.

And, if you haven't had the pleasure of meeting him, please check out the article.

At age 90, he is currently teaching his 31st Czech language course at Lodge 88.

In addition to his work with the class, he is also a regular contributor to the Vestnik's Czech language section.

District Five Spring Meeting March 3, 1996 at Lodge 196, Cypress To all SPJST Members in District Five and Statewide, You are cordially invited to the District Five Spring Meeting which will be hosted by Lodge 196, Cypress on March 3, 1996. Lodge 196 is located at 17180 Huffmeister Road in Cypress, Texas.

The day's schedule is: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. - Lunch 12 to 1 p.m. - Social 1 p.m.- Meeting Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. It will consist of a barbecue chicken lunch with all the trimmings at a very good price of $4 for adults and $2 for children under the age of 10.

We are asking all members to bring their special pastry. If you have anything to donate for door prizes, it will be appreciated. Door prizes will be awarded at the end of the meeting. There will also be a silent auction. All youth clubs are asked to bring something for the silent auction. Any member who wants to bring something is welcome to do so.

We especially invite all 50-year, 75year and age 96 members and all of you who were chosen as Fraternalist of the Year in your lodge.

This is the convention year and we will again have the Mr. and Miss SPJST contest and the Little Mr. and Miss SPJST. The ages are 18 to 22 for the Mr. and Miss contest and three to five years for the Little Mr. and Miss. The district winners will go to the convention and participate against other districts.

Please circle March 3, 1996, on your calendar. Hope you can join us in a good day of fellowship with all of your fraternal brothers and sisters. We need to join hands together for a better understanding of our SPJST society. Let's keep it that way.

Incentive Awards Banquet February 24 at Lodge 24, Cyclone This seasonal event will be held on Saturday, February 24, 1996, at Lodge 24, Cyclone with registration starting at 2 p.m. and the awards presentations at 3 p.m. This event will follow the Local Lodge Workshop, which will also be held on February 24 at Lodge 47, Seaton.

Workshop registration is at 9 a.m. The workshop begins at 10 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m.

The theme for 1995 was "Working Together to Prosper This Year."

Communication articles from the past and present will be on display at the banquet.

The banquet will include entertainment, awards presentations, and recognition of winning lodge officers and win-

ning sales representatives, photos of winners and fellowship. A delicious dinner will follow with a rib-eye steak, baked potato, and trimmings plus a dessert.

This banquet features the winning lodges in the incentive program. This is composed of two parts-meeting the quotas for insurance sales and providing fraternal activities for that lodge's membership and other community projects.

We hope you are planning to attend.

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 38, U:ovar Reports on January Meeting SPJST Lodge 38, Kovar held its monthly meeting on January 11, 1996, at 7 p.m.

President Johnnie Janek opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and Joe Sulak read the minutes, which were approved.

Names of three members who had passed away were read and we stood for a moment of silent prayer for Matilda Renfro, Tricia Zimmerhanzel, and Anne Ruth Dagerath.

Edwin Zimmerhanzel presented a report on the New Year's Eve Party which was a huge success with 416 tickets sold. This is 100 more tickets than last year's party.

The election of officers for 1996 was held. The results are: President Johnnie Janek Vice President Edwin Zimmerhanzel Secretary Joe Sulak Treasurer Jean Lastovica Reporter Jerry Faust Board of Trustee Leon Kalina Gus Hajdik resigned as one of the board of trustees because of health reasons.

President Janek was elected to attend the 27th annual SPJST Convention in Arlington on June 10-13, 1996. Joe Sulak was elected as alternate.

51, Ellinger Invites Members to Dinner this Sunday Lodge

Lodge 51, Ellinger will have a chicken barbecue dinner for members and family members living at home on Sunday, February 18, 1996, at 12:30 p.m. at the Ellinger Chamber of Commerce Hall.

Vice President Terry Sefcik called the fourth quarterly meeting to order on November 10, 1995. Everyone in attendance stood and recited the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag and then remained standing for a few moments of silence in memory of all previousl y deceased lodge members.

Secretary Anne Emery held a roll call of officers. All officers were in attendance. She read the minutes from the September 8 meeting which were approved as read. Two items of correspondence were read.

Treasurer Freddie Kaluza gave his report which was approved.

Financial Secretary Maxine Sefcik gave her report. New members are Terry Lynn Marek, adult, and Ashley J. Renegar, youth. Transferees to our lodge from Lodge 24 are Jaclyn D. Zabcik and Larry Dean Zabcik. We are very happy to welcome these four members to our lodge. This report was approved as read.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Maxine Sefcik reported that a sympathy card was sent to the Pokladnik family and a get-well card was sent to Brother Ben Zabcik. We extend our deepest sympathy to Brother Sid and Sister Justine Pokladnik on the loss of their son.

Sister Mona Zahirniak reported that the audit committee met and found all records to he in order.

Vice President Terry Sefcik presided over the election of officers. Brother Ted Kocian was elected president to replace our deceased president John Emery. All other officers were re-elected by acclamation. Our sincere thanks were expressed to Brother Ray Matus for his work in keeping the hall available for us.

Delegates elected to represent our lodge at the 27th Convention to be held in Arlington, Texas, on June 10-13, 1996, were Terry Sefcik, Maxine Sefcik and Anne Emery. Substitute delegates elected were Freddie Kaluza, Lil Matus and Ray Matus.

The door prize winner was Sherry Cockrell. She donated her monetary prize to the West . Ambulance Fund.

Our next meeting will be held on Friday night, March 1, 1996.

The meeting was adjourned and a very informative talk was given to us by James Lawhorn, a member of the West Police Department. We appreciate all of the invaluable information he gave us in helping to prevent burglary and reducing property crimes. We should all be thankful to the dedicated officers who serve to protect us and to keep us safe.

81, Needville Reports on January Meeting

Lodge

On Sunday, January 21, 1996, the SPJST Lodge 81 of Needville met for their regular monthly meeting. At twelve noon, baked and fried chicken were served along with all of the delicious vegetables, salads and desserts that were brought by the wonderful ladies of our lodge. Thanks ladies for a job well done.

Remember, we need your help again for our February meeting. There was a total of 43 members and guests present at the meeting. That was wonderful despite the fact that so many people are fighting the flu bug. Guests included Earline and Arnold Kucera and Louis Kadlecek. The Kuceras were guests of Emma and Johnnie Kujawa and Louis Kadlecek is the nephew of Olga Polasek. We were happy to have each of you present and invite you to come back again. Guests are always welcome. Joining us later as a guest at the meeting was Gusta Lee Levert.

At 1 p.m., President Macha called the business meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Sister Willie Mae Kuykendall. All officers were present except Vice President Vincent Newman.

Vincent was absent due to a job commitment.

The minutes of the December meeting were read by Secretary Mary Werner and were accepted as read.

Treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendall presented the monthly financial report. It was accepted as read. Gilbert Walzel, our special fund chairman, began his report with the calendar of events for the coming month. His report covered the monthly income and expenses of the Special Fund. Gilbert also gave the annual report for the year 1995. The books are now ready to be audited.

Correspondence was read by Mary Werner and President Macha.

There was one death since our last meeting. Ernest Mikel of the Damon-

West Columbia area passed away. A moment of silence was observed in memory of our departed brother.

Sympathy is extended to his wife, Loney, and to the rest of his family. May he rest in peace.

Our sick list includes Victor Werner, Jerry Blinka and Laura Wrobloski.

Victor is in the Kateland Square Geriatic Center in Richmond. We missed you at the meeting, Victor. Laura is the granddaughter of Willie Mae Kuykendall. She had her tonsils removed. Our prayer is for each of you to get well.

Under old business, Brother Walzel reported that the roof on the hall will be repaired as soon as the weather is permissible.

Discussion was brought up about our Age 96 and 50-year member honorees. It was decided that the lodge will honor these special people at our March 17, 1996, meeting. Sister Mary Werner will send invitations.

President Macha explained to us about filling out the individual fraternal services worksheets. Every member needs to fill out one of these sheets.

Vice President Newman is in charge of this project. This is of great importance to the SPJST. The four lucky winners of the $5 prize donated by the local lodge were Ida Sliwa, George Abschneider, A.G. Palat and Adolph Macha. Thanks to the following folks for donating the additional prizes—the Alvin Blinkas, Johnny Kujawas, Ben Tydlackas, Ray Horkeys, George Abschneiders, Edwin Susans, Vic Werners, Louis Havelkas, Adolph Machas, Mary and Donnie Matcek, Ivory Shilk, Olga Polasek, and Jeanette Barnes.

It has been one year since I have been reporting the news for Lodge 81. I have tried my best to write an enjoyable article for everyone. Sometimes there are some mistakes in the article, but it just happens.

I do not want to offend anyone. If there are any suggestions or ideas, please feel free to let me know.

How has each of you been enjoying the cold, frigid weather? Everyone seems to be ready for spring. In our area, flu has a lot of people sick. The doctor's offices are full. Take care of yourself and bundle up.

It is Valentine's Day time again.

Remember to tell your loved ones that you love them. Then don't forget, tell them those three little words "I Love You" everyday. It will make this world a better place in which to live.

Some of us that are 50 years of age have the option to buy life insurance at a reasonable rate. This goes only to 80 years. The Home Office has been sending out forms so look them over and get one of the sales representatives to write you a policy. Many years ago, it did not cost so much for a burial but today it will cost about $6,000. Many of us only took out a policy for $500 or $1,000. So as not to put a burden on your children think about increasing your policy that the SPJST is offering.

I as yet have not seen the new caretaker's house but it should be complete by February 15. It sure is a lot different building today than it was a few years ago. Some of us older folks can remember when bread was 10 cents and eggs were 15 cents a dozen. But that was when we were making only about $1 a day or so. I believe those were the good old days. Before TV, people would come to the meetings and to the dances at all our SPJST lodges.

I wanted to get a letter to the Vestnik to let you know about the dance on February 25. This will be the Pierce Wildwood Band. They play mixed music but they are a country music band. This will be Sunday evening, February 25 from 3 to 7 p.m. Be sure to support your SPJST lodges and let's try to keep polka and waltzes in our lodges. Good health to each of you and remember the insurance policy that I mentioned above.

This could happen to any of us: An SPJST member went into small town post office and asked for five dollars worth of stamps.

"What denomination?" asked the clerk "Well," came the angry reply. "I didn't know it would ever come to this, but if the nosy government people have to know. I am Catholic."

Lodge 133, San Antonio Reports on January Meeting Lodge 133, San Antonio held their monthly meeting on Sunday, January 21 at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Activity Center, located at 1630 Goliad Road in San Antonio. There were 25 members and three guests present.

Mila Phelps, chairperson of the Financial Auditing Committee, reported that all financial records for 1995 had been audited by the committee and were found to be in good order.

Genevieve Schultz was reported as being ill. Our wishes to her for a speedy recovery. Couples celebrating anniversaries in January were Ernest and Ophie Popp (54 years), Bob and Jarolyn Popp (18 years), Ray and Donna Schimcek (six years), and Joe and Viola Spacek (52 years).

Lodge 133 has four new applications for membership. Congratulations to our newest members Shelley Zigmund, Alissa Lee, Brandon Lee and Nicholas Lee. The district officers workshop and incentive awards banquet will be held on Saturday, February 24 in Seaton and Cyclone. All Lodge 133, San Antonio officers are planning to attend. Don Netek reported on the progress of the by-law committee. Members are reminded that any proposed changes or additions to the bylaws must be submitted before March 30.

Emil Matula and Viola Kurtz will be recognized and will receive 50-year pins during our March meeting.

Congratulations to these members on their longstanding membership.

Crafters:

Two-Day Quilt Workshop at Lodge 191, Lufkin There will be a two-day quilt workshop Tuesday, March 12 and Wednesday, March 13, taught by Terrie Newman of Hot Springs, Arkansas, formerly of Lufkin. Two techniques will be taught.

The first day will be a wedge circular Christmas Tree Skirt/Table Cloth and the second day will be Soft-Edge piecing.

The cost is $60 for both classes or $30 for any one. The classes will be at the SPJST Lodge 191 on Hughes Drive in Fuller Springs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The lodge will be available the night of March 12 for anyone who wishes to sleep over (or quilt). You will need to bring a sleeping baWpillow, etc.

Terrie Newman began teaching quilting in 1978 and has taught for the University of Wisconsin, Medford Extension through Community Schools and at the Gallery of Arts and Crafts, SoFro Fabrics, Museum of East Texas, and The Cozy Quilters quilt shop in Crockett, Texas. She has also taught in an adult foster care home in Manistique, Michigan. Ms. Newman coordinated two raffle quilts for Angelina County Home Extension and one for Hospice in the Pines. She has also conducted workshops for various organizations.

Terrie's original quilt, "crooked Lane," was chosen as the State winner from Texas in the Good Housekeeping/Land's End "All-American Quilt Contest" in 1992. Her quilt "Bouquets!" won a Judge's Award in the "Salute to Quiltmakers of the Past" Challenge, sponsored by Lehman Publications, RJR,

and the Smithsonian Institution, and was published in the November, 1995, issue of Quilter's Newsletter Magazine. The quilt also appeared on the cover of the show program for the 1995 International Quilt Festival in Houston, Texas. An original technique, "Twinkling Star," using the Cathedral Window unit, was published in the 1996 Spring issue of American Quilter Magazine. Her quilts have been accepted into the American International Quilt Association's "Quilts—A World of Beauty" judged show at the International Quilt Festival in Houston in 1993 and 1994 and "Quilt America 1994" in Indianapolis, Indiana.

An original commissioned quilt, "Colorful Past/Bright Future," hangs in the education room at the Museum of East Texas.

Ms. Newman has studied with internationally-known fiber artists and is a member of American International Quilt Association, American Quilter's Society, and a founding member and board member of The Quilt Guild of the Pineywoods and Busy Bee Quilters in Lufkin, Texas.

of Women Reports on February Meeting Thirty-one members, including Honorary Member Jerry Elzner, and six guests braved the cold to attend our February 1 meeting. Regulars missing the meeting were Albertina Oakes ("She's gambling in Nevada," said Sister Lillian Covill) and Helen Sacky, who was ill. We missed them both.

Guests were Jim Havrda, Dan Jackson, Evelyn Papasan, Greg, Olivia, and Maria Carroll. It was nice seeing Frances Faye Carroll with her husband and two small daughters. Grandmother Betty Jurica is enjoying their visit from Cincinnati. It is always a pleasure to have the husbands and families of our members join us for lunch.

Pauline Novosad brought valentine candy for the membership to enjoy and Rose Huff donated a pound of coffee.

Betty Jurica brought pictures of a previous meeting and Kathy Marek brought a picture of her daughter, Jennifer, who is our youngest member. There was also a card from Jennifer expressing her regret at being unable to attend all of our meetings at this time due to a heavy schedule at school.

Jerry Elzner brought a letter he had received from Libuse Brdicka of Prague, in which she stated that she recalls very often her visit to Texas and the many good and kind people she met here. She was our guest last August and sent her regards to the women in the Krouzek. It's always nice to hear from past visitors.

Helen Sacky sent a donation in honor of her son, Father George Harris, who is recuperating from a heart attack and double bypass. He is following a strict diet and undergoing therapy on his road to recovery. We all wish him the best of luck and look forward to his next visit with us.

A discussion was held for a possible wildflower viewing trip. Plans should be finalized at our March meeting. Our last one was such a success, a repeat performance seems in order.

We decided to help out with the Easter basket project, headed up by Betty Jurica and Kathy Marek each year. Our members are asked to bring their scissors, scotch tape, and Easter candy suitable for putting into the small baskets to our March 7 meeting. Instead of candy, a cash donation will be acceptable.

Our door prizes were donated by Anita Regmund, Frances Kosarek, Helen Pavelka, Evelyn Lovelace, Marcellina Mokry, and Lillie Hayek. We have placed a limit of six to be given out at a meeting. More than that brought by the members are placed in our prize box for future drawings. Not knowing what you may win is one of the fun things about these drawings.

Lodge 172, Pasadena Members Drs. Mylene and Dennis Dressler Providing Academic Services in Mexico Dennis Dressler and his wife, Mylene, both members of Lodge 172, Pasadena, are hooked on helping the educational system in Chiapas, Mexico, even if it means putting their own routines on hold for several months.

The director of counseling at Lee College in Baytown and his wife, who teaches English at Rice University, decided to kick off the new year with a return to San Cristobal de las Casas in the state of Chiapas. They first visited the city two years ago during Dressler's sabbatical.

"We went there with the purpose of learning Spanish," Dressler said.

"While we were there, we became volunteer English teachers and worked with a group of Chamulum Indians, teaching them pesticide-free farming techniques and other things we thought would be helpful."

They were invited to return, and they have taken the invitation to heart.

Mylene Dressler, 32, who holds a doctorate in English, headed to Chiapas in early January. Her husband, 44, whose doctorate is in counseling, packed up the couple's Baytown house, put everything in storage and was planning to be in-San Cristobal by mid-month.

On their second tour in San Cristobal, the Dresslers will work with the National Autononomous, University of Chiapas for about eight months, he said.

"My wife will help develop a degree program in English and will be working with English teachers to help them incorporate English literature in their classrooms," Dressler said. "I will work with administrators, helping develop student services on sort of a consulting basis. We'll help set up counseling services and advising services for mostly academic kinds of counseling.

Dressler acknowledged that neither he nor his wife is fluent in Spanish, yet—even after their trip two years ago.

"We hope to improve our Spanish even more," he said. "That's one reason we're going down there, to work on our Spanish, too. We're not fluent, but we can get by."

The couple will rent a house during their visit, and they hope to make some time to visit the Mayan ruins and learn

about the culture there.

"That part of Mexico is rich in Mayan culture and history," Dressler said. "We want to try to get out some to the jungles and villages to visit with the Indian communities.

"On the other hand, because of the political climate there and our time commitment, I don't know how much time we'll have for that."

Dressler described San Cristobal as one of Mexico's classic, colonial small towns, with cobblestone streets and adobe small, homes.

"It's a beautiful city but not a place where a lot of tourists go," he said.

Dressler, who has been director of counseling at Lee College for five years, said he expects to spend most of his days working with administrators, evaluating what they are doing and planning ideas for programs. His work will include evaluating the university's present services and trying to recommend changes that might strengthen the services. He also hopes to make time to enroll in some Spanish classes.

"My wife will be involved in a lot of training, too," he said. "She'll spend much of her time in the classroom, working with English teachers and trying to develop a degree program in English there. I don't know how much time she will have for Spanish classes, though."

Neither of the Dresslers expect massive changes from their stay.

"We have a fascination for international education and a real interest in social change, but we don't have some naive notion we'll change Mexico or even San Cristobal," Dressler said.

"We're just hoping to touch a few lives in some small way. In terms of what we might bring back, I think we'll have a deeper appreciation for Mexican culture and of the people there. Their culture is so close to Texas, we feel almost an obligation to reach out to our south ern neighbors.

"We're pretty excited about that and looking forward to our trip."

Concho and Tom Green Czech Heritage Society

The first quarterly meeting of the Runnels, Concho and Tom Green Counties Czech Heritage Society will be held Sunday, February 18, 1996, in the SPJST Hall in Rowena at 2:30 p.m.

The program will involve the membership in a planning meeting for the Czech Heritage Fest in October. President Kokes will be receptive to all ideas presented in order to make the celebration successful.

He is asking everyone to participate.

For entertainment, bring your Czech records or cassettes or dominoes or card games.

Everyone is asked to bring sandwiches, dips and chips, or desserts for the svacina lunch. Coffee and drinks may be purchased at the bar.

Band Leaders Organize to Keep Polka Music Alive and Well in Texas The New Braunfels Polka Leaders Association is a newly-formed organization composed of seven polka band leaders based in New Braunfels. The primary purpose of the association is to promote German-Czech polka dance music and keep it alive in Texas.

McLennan-Hill Counties CHS Presents Oldest and Youngest Members The oldest member of the McLennanHill Chapter Czech Heritage Society of Texas is Mrs. Bettie Zapalac of Abbott, Texas. She celebrated her 90th birthday on June 1, 1995. Bettie is a faithful member in our chapter. She became a member in February, 1992. Our records indicate that she missed only three meetings since that time.

Mrs. Zapalac writes articles for a Czech newspaper, Nasinec. She is active in other organizations. She enjoys cooking, crocheting, quilting, reading, making Christmas ornaments and stocking stuffers. Bettie enjoys giving away her handmade arts and crafts items.

The youngest member of the McLennan-Hill Chapter Czech Heritage Society of Texas is little Miss Taylor Jill Perry of Waco, Texas. She is five months old, born in August 1, 1995. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Perry of Waco.

Northeastern Bohemia Research Project Update The Northeastern Bohemia Research Project was announced on November 1, 1995. The response to our first call for family history information for our ancestors originating from northeastern Bohemia was overwhelming and exciting.

We want to thank everybody who has contributed to the project and those who are continuing to provide information. It is proving to be a wonderful research tool for people working in this area, their interest and enthusiasm is very encouraging.

We have compiled a database of more than 10,000 people with 2560 of them being born in Bohemia. Expressions of Sympathy Expression of Sympathy On behalf of all the officers and members of Jaromir Lodge 54, West, the Resolution Committee wishes to express our condolences to the bereaved relatives and friends of our departed lodge sister, TEREZIE MAREK, age 100, of West, who passed away early Sunday evening, November 12, 1995, at West Rest Haven in West.

Funeral services were at 3 p.m.

Tuesday, November 14 at the West Brethren Church with the Rev. Robert Holaday officiating. Burial followed at West Brethren Cemetery.

Mrs. Marek was born May 31, 1895, in Bratrejove (Moravia), Czechoslovakia, the daughter of Thomas and Frances Kovar. She was the youngest of six children and came to the United States in July, 1914, at the age of 19. She settled in Granger and later moved to Axtell. She married John J. Marek on November 22, 1915, in West. She was a housewife and homemaker. They lived on and worked a farm in the Tokio community before moving to West in 1957. Her husband died after 59 years of marriage on August 2, 1975.

She was a member of the West Brethren Church where she was active in and a charter member of the Christian Sisters and formerly served as a secretary.

She was also a member of the Mutual Aide Society and the SPJST Lodge 54, West.

Sister Marek outlived her SPJST certificate in 1991 and was honored by Lodge 54 members.

She is survived by one nephew, John E. Kasik, Sr. of Malone; two nieces, Elsie Stunkard of Maypearl and Lillian Urbanovsky of West; and several greatnieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

Memorials may be made to the West Brethren Church or to the Christian Sisters.

Expression of Sympathy We would like to express our sincere sympathy to the family of ANN E. JAKS, who passed away on Friday, January 12, 1996, at the age of 80 years, six months and 21 days.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m.

Monday, January 15 at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church with Rev. Jerry Caponi officiating. Burial was at the Shiner SPJST Cemetery under the direction of Kubena Funeral Home of Hallettsville.

She was born June 21, 1915, in Shiner to the late Karel and Mary (Baranek) Mikes, natives of Bohemia, Czech Republic. She worked as a beautician in Corpus Christi and Victoria before opening her own shop in Shiner, where she worked for many years until her retirement.

She is survived by a daughter, Charlene Whiteside of Huntsville; one son, Harvey W. Jaks of Shiner; one sister, Mary Kubecka of Shiner; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her mother on April 25, 1968; her father on December 10, 1982; and a brother, Charles Mikes on July 13, 1994.

Mrs. Zemanek lived for many years in Newgulf with the family. She was preceded in death by her husband Arnold Zemanek, Sr. and her son, Arnold Zemanek, Jr. Survivors are her son, Robert Zemanek and wife of Houston; a daughter, Wanel Adair of Michigan; grandchildren, Robert and Kathleen of Houston, John and wife, Steve and wife Adair of Ohio, and Joan and John Derrick of Michigan; great-granddaughter Skyler of Michigan; two brothers, John Kasparek and wife of Needville and Gilbert Kasparek of Houston; a sister, Annie Slovacek of Houston; brother-in-law John Zemanek of Houston; and sisters-inlaw Vlasta Chernosky, Gusta Lee Lenert and Olga Seale of Houston, and Alvina Gajewsky of Fredericksburg, Texas.

Sister Zemanek would have received her 50-year SPJST membership pin in April.

Private graveside services were held December 18, 1995, at Greenlawn Memorial Cemetery in Rosenberg, Texas.

She passed away in the Beechnut Nursing Home in Houston, Texas.

Resolution Committee, Mary Werner Winnifred Susan

Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 142, Houston in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother, ALVIN BARANOWSKI. Alvin (Al) S. Baranowski, 63, passed away Friday, Janaury 19, 1996, in a local hospital.

He retired from Texaco after 32 years

of service. He was a veteran of the United States Army having served during the Korean Conflict.

Alvin will be remembered as a true businessman in the Garden Oaks, Oakforest area. For many years, he owned and operated various businesses in the area. He was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, American Legion Post No. 560, the SPJST Lodge, but most of all he was a loving husband, father, grandfather and good friend to all who knew him. He devoted his life to his family. He was always at the school functions with them and at the ball park when there was a game. His children and grandchildren were everything to him. Alvin is preceded in death by his father, Stanley Baranowski.

He is survived by Dolores, his wife of 40 years; one son, Kenneth R. (Tiger) Baranowski of Houston; daughters, Deborah Wisnoski and husband Mark of Houston and Teri Brogdon of Houston; grandchildren, Brian and Megan Wisnoski, Joshua, Timothy, and Jennifer Brogdon; his mother, Clara Baranowki of Brenham; his sister, Mary Jo (Cookie) Barnett and husband Don of Brenham; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Vigil services were held at 7 p.m.

Sunday, January 21, 1996, in the chapel of Pat H. Foley Funeral Home. The funeral mass was celebrated at 11 a.m.

Monday,. January 22, 1996, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. The Rite of Committal followed at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery. Officiating was Msgr. T.A. Wendland.

A retired General Tire worker, he died Monday, January 22, 1996, at his home at the age of 73.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m.

January 24 at Rosemound Cemetery with the Rev. Ivan Ker officiating.

Mr. Clemons was born. August. 18, 1922, in South Pittsburg, Tennessee. He served in the United States Army from 1942 to 1946 with the Southern Philippines Liberation Headquarters Battery 655th Field Artillery Battalion.

He received many awards and decorations, including the American Theater Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Medal with one Bronze Star, Philipine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, Victory Ribbon with one Service Stripe and two Oversees Service Bars.

After leaving the military, he worked for General Tire and Rubber Company in Waco and retired in 1979. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2148, the American Legion Post No. 121, and the Waco Gunfighters Association. He was also a member of SPJST Lodge 35 where he volunteered to

work at the dances. As a building chairman, he spent much time keeping things repaired at the hall.

Pallbearers were Bob Barron, Jack Bynum, Billy Graham, Doc Holliday, Joey Parton, Dustin Spray, Mark Collins, Jacob May and Lee Spray.

He is survived by his wife, Velma G. Clemons of Waco; three sons, Roy Ernest Clemons, Carl Stephen Clemons and Charles Edward Clemons, all of Waco; one sister, Irene Dunn of Auburntown, Tennessee; one brother, Carl Preston Clemons of Athens, Alabama; one granddaughter; one great-granddaughter; one great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

Born in Temple to Joe and Mary Kvetek Olis, she was a lifelong resident of Temple. She married Frank Sefcik on April 1, 1940, in Temple. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton and the Altar Society at St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Survivors are her husband, Frank Sefcik of Temple, and a sister, Annie Zalesky of Austin.

Mr. Mikeska died Wednesday, January 24, 1996, at a Houston residence.

Mr. Mikeska was born in Temple to Edward and Emily Pavlica Mikeska. He was a resident of Big Spring for 30 years.

He graduated from Rogers High School in 1957. He received a degree in interior decorating from the University of Texas at Austin. He was a member of the American Society of Interior Decorators and was past president and a member of the board. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 47, the Big Spring Chamber of Commerce and Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Big Spring. He was the owner and operator of Lucelle's Inc. in Big Spring. He also did some major design work in Florida and New York.

Survivors are his mother, Emily Mikeska Stuteville of Rogers; one brother, Dean Mikeska of Rogers; and two sisters, Linda Mikeska of Houston and Sandra Vrba of Richmond.

Born in Bell County, he had lived the past one and one-half years in Cameron, but lived most of his life near Rosebud.

He married Helen Hurta on July 22, 1936. Secretary for RVOS Lodge No. 8 in Rosebud for the past 30 years, he was a 50-year member of SPJST Lodge 47. He was a retired farmer and was a Brethren.

Survivors are his wife, Helen Hejl of Cameron; a son, Albert Vincent Hejl, Jr. of McGregor; four daughters, Mrs. William (Barbara) Hejl and Mrs. Charles (Helen) Belson, both of Temple, Mrs. Ernest (Lorraine) Moore and Mrs. Kathy Terry, both of Cameron; three sisters, Mrs. Miladie Jecmenek of Rogers, Mrs. Della Psencik of Temple and Mrs. Doris Chancey of Lillian, Alabama; and nine grandchildren.

Youth Letters Section District One Youth Counselor Reports on Summer Camp Dear Readers, I guess the old saying "better late than never" is fitting for the subject of this letter. As District One. Youth Counselor, I am reporting to you about District One Camp yes, summer camp. I had intended to have this letter appear prior to Christmas to coincide with our 1995 camp theme of "Christmas in July" so I put the camp pictures with my Christmas things and just stumbled across them today as I am "iced" in (February 2) and doing a little house cleaning. At long last, here is my report on our 1995 District One Camp!

It was a typical hot day in July when youth members from Snook, Dime Box,

New Tabor and Bryan descended on Camp Val Verde, Christmas presents in tow. I was so excited beginning this year's camp with higher camp attendance than I have seen in ten years. This included members from the newly organized youth club at Lodge 39, Bryan and increased numbers from the other three active youth groups. We had a total of 85 campers and chaperones. Name tags, cabin assignments and even group names coincided with the Christmas theme.

Each camper's picture was taken for a Christmas ornament, and yes, each member wore a Santa's cap.

We enjoyed typical camp activities, including horseback riding, swimming, canoeing, hiking, archery, and fun time on the South Bosque River. We had fun making various Christmas ornaments during craft time and even had a Christmas tree decorating contest as one of our activities. The two older groups of

campers also participated in the ropes course one afternoon and learned a lot about teamwork and overcoming fears.

On Friday afternoon, we met at the river for a wiener roast and a campfire ceremony. To stay with our theme, we sang Christmas carols around the campfire after the LITs conducted the campfire ceremony. Speaking of LITs, I want to thank Kim Mayes, Brooke Paul, Cheryl Cannon, Mindy Suehs, Amy Gaas, Vince Morehead, Nicholas Rackel, and Marshall Petty for serving as LITs for camp and being a big help whenever I needed them.

I think the highlight of this year's camp came Saturday night when D&J Karaoke came and entertained the campers for our Christmas party.

Everyone joined in the entertainment with singing along behind the mike. We

The following youth cannot compete in the contest: • Any female who gets or has been pregnant or has borne a child.

• Any male who has caused a female to get pregnant.

• Any youth who was convicted or treated for the use of drugs or alcohol during the past year.

• Any youth who was convicted for any criminal offense (excluding minor traffic violations), during the past year.

Selection: • Lodge: No lodge eliminations; lodges can send as many candidates to district as they wish, who have never held the title of "Mr. SPJST" or "Miss SPJST".

• District: Competition will be at each district's spring meeting (unless the district desires a separate date), but no later than May 1, 1996. The District Youth Counselor will arrange selection of at least three judges. The district competition will be in two separate contests: Interview with Judges Response 50 points Poise 20 points Personality 30 points Speech, selected from the following topics: • What SPJST fraternalism means; • How the SPJST has affected my life;

Convention: The finalists will compete in speech and interview contests to determine "Miss SPJST" and "Mr. SPJST." The competition will be at the convention in June, 1996.

cookout at the river with our traditional shaving creme fight. Later, we went swimming and had a night hike. The senior groups then went on a midnight scavenger hunt entitled "Santa's Been Kidnapped." The objective of the hike was to find "Santa" by following clues that were given at each location. The clues took the hikers from the stables to the swamp, to Christy's crossing, to the river and eventually to the kidnappers hide-out—the two-story cabin. Once at the two story cabin, the hikers were greeted with a bombardment of water balloons. And yes, "Santa" was there—at least a stuffed animal dressed as Santa was to be found.

We departed Camp Val Verde on Monday morning a little less enthusiastic than when we arrived, but nonetheless, filled with fond memories of another SPJST District One Camp that will be with us for many years.

Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club Chili Supper this Friday

Dear Readers, Our January Youth Club Meeting was well-attended. The youth members did a good job in participating in community service projects for the month. Mr. Kenneth Macik was our guest speaker and presented a very interesting program on "Electricity."

Plans were made for club members to go to a movie in January. We were reminded of the deadline for submitting entries for the SPJST t-shirt contest. Our next meeting is scheduled for February 7 at 6:30 p.m. Our program will be on the 1995 4-H Exchange Trip.

CZECH CULTURE

Plan to Celebrate Czech Heritage Week, October 20 - 26, 1996 Czech Heritage Week" should provide an opportunity for CzechAmericans to preserve their ethnicity, history, culture, customs, traditions and language. This week should provide an important lesson for Czech and other ethnic children. The objectives of the "Czech Heritage Week" are to focus upon and promote the numerous contributions made by Czech immigrants and Czech-Americans to the strength and vitality of the state of Texas and the nation. All CzechAmericans are being asked to participate in this week-long commemoration which may culminate with a designate "Czech Day" in your community including all Czech groups and fraternal organizations.

The following suggestions are offered to assist each community in promoting "Czech Heritage Week":

Czech fraternal organizations.

1.

Begin planning in January or February. Appoint a "Czech Heritage Week" committee and elect a chairperson. Include representatives from churches and fraternal groups in the community to begin planning for Czech Heritage Week.

Request proclamations for "Czech Heritage Week" from the mayor, city officials, school and church officials.

Identify all relevant CzechAmerican events which could take place in your community such as: school programs, library programs, seminars or lectures, church activities, and/or parades. The focal point of the week may be Czech Day. The following could be invited to participate: mayors, city council, school superintendents, church organizations, and

Request assistance from the 3. following: school boards, public libraries, museums, historical societies, Czech fraternal organizations, high school and university clubs, junior colleges, and community Czech classes.

Schools could include the study of Czech history, culture, customs, food, music and language. Included in this could be bulletin board displays, library displays, etc. Programs should include all grade levels.

Advertise all "Czech Heritage Week" events on a calendar to be submitted with a press release to the local media and to be circulated to local Czech groups. Posters advertising activities can be displayed throughout the community.

"Nazdar" was made popular by the Sokols, and in this country it was regarded as a special Sokol greeting.

This is no longer so. "Nazdar" is very common, and no longer connected with Sokol use exclusively. When you meet someone who is older or whom you do not know closely, then the greeting of "dobrY den" would come to your lips, while a close friend or contemporary you would greet with "nazdar". From the point of an English-speaking person, the usage of "nazdar" is peculiar in the sense that it could and actually is commonly used, not only when meeting a person like the American "hello", but also in parting, instead of "na shledanou" or "sbohem". *** (Nowadays: "Ahoy!" is also used very much for Hello and/or Farewell or Goodbye.— Editor.)

Since "jitro" is a poetic word and not otherwise commonly used, you may run across an abbreviation "dobrYtro", which is strictly colloquial.

"Sbohem" has a religious origin.

Literal translation is "with God" and traces apparently to the phrase "Jdi (or Mete) s Bohem". "Jdi" is singular, while "Mete" is plural imperative (meaning "Go with God"). The religious meaning has been slowly lost in the common usage, therefore; it is written now as one word, "sbohem", instead of "s Bohem".

The religious meaning has been largely preserved with the longer form of the same greeting "s Pinem Bohem", and, therefore, it is usually written as three separate words with capital letters. Literal translation would be "with Lord God." Occasionally, you may see it written as one

word, "spanem bohem".

"Dobd veeer" and "dobrou noc" is used similarly as in this country. The same is true of "na shledanou". ***
