Clowning Around

SPJST makes headlines in 9 From the SPJST President's Office comes the following report: According to the Texas Press Association, the SPJST made headline news in Texas newspapers no fewer that 358 times in 1995. That represents a 48 percent increase over the 242 recorded clippings collected in 1994.

Since 1992, the SPJST has subscribed to the Texas Press Association clipping service as a way to track its mediarelated efforts. The service combs the state's

Lian is the daughter of Glen and Wendy Pruski of Kosciusko and the granddaughter of District Seven Director Bob and Polly Bayer of Floresville. All are members of SPJST Lodge 107, Floresville. For more than twenty years, the members of Lodge 107 have been active participants in the big regional festival.

The lodge operates a concession where they serve all varieties of peanuts, including roasted peanuts, hot peanuts and peanut brittle. Proceeds generated go towards the maintenance and operation of the Floresville lodge hall.

It was Mother's Day. A proud Hillary Clinton sat in church, awaiting four-yearold Chelsea's answer to the minister's question: What would she give her mommy if she could give anything in the world?

I read that story and it reminded me about the business that we're in. And about the the valuable service that we deliver when we provide ,a family with adequate life insurance protection. Life insurance won't ensure that you live forever; however, it can help take care of your family if you die too soon.

We've talked recently in this column about the new Senior Life plan offered by SPJST. Something we haven't discussed lately, however, is the excellent life insurance coverage available for young adults.

It comes in many forms. One of the newest and most popular of these offerings continues to be SPJST's Modterm Insurance program.

Essentially, Modterm is a ten-year, renewable term certificate that carries with it a unique "original age enhancement option." It is meant to appeal to people between the ages of 20 and 70 who want a lot of insurance for a little bit of money.

The age enhancement option allows the certificate holder to double his or her coverage at any time between the second and ninth year of the Modterm issue date.

For example, if you purchase a $100,000 Modterm certificate in 1996 and then, in 1998, you decide that you would like to double that amount to $200,000, you can do it at the 1996 premium rate.

The Modterm certificate can be purchased in varying amounts to fit your particular needs. The minimum certificate value is $25,000. The maximum "buyin" is $1 million.

While the Modterm certificate provides the same protection as SPJST permanent insurance, buyers need to understand that the certificate is not designed to build cash values or to be owned for an entire lifetime. The Modterm certificate is convertible to permanent insurance without having to demonstrate proof of insurability up to age 65.

Local Lodge Officers Workshop Lodge officers, please take note. The 1996 Local Lodge Officers Workshop is fast approaching. It will be Saturday, February 24 at Lodge 47, Seaton, located approximately 7 miles east of Temple, just off State Highway 53. The program starts at 9 a.m. The theme of this year's program is "Working Together to Prosper." Please note that you do not have to be a lodge officer to attend the workshop.

Later that afternoon, at Lodge 24, Cyclone, five miles east of Seaton, the SPJST Supreme Lodge will be hosting the Third Annual Lodge Recognition and Incentive Awards Banquet. Watch your Vestnik for additional information on both these events as it becomes available. ***

Dear District Two Delegates and Members: I would like to take this opportunity to announce that I will not he a candidate for District II Director. After many hours of difficult consideration and discussion with niy wife, Adeline, and family, I feel that I want to devote more time to our personal life while we still are able to do so.

The pa;>t 11 plus years that I have served as your District II Director have gone by so quickly. During this period, I have made many friends across District II and the state of which I will always cherish. It has especially been rewarding to have worked with such dedicated Officers, Directors and staff that encompass the Supreme Lodge. These friendships are a very rewarding aspect of being a District Director. As I have done during the past 50 years, it is my plan to

continue to be active in the many lodge activities, socials and sales of insurance.

During my tenure as District II Director, there have been numerous significant accomplishments Society wide.

As is so well known, the environment in which we live and conduct business is constantly changing. So must our SPJST if we are to continue to be a strong organization in the second 100 years of our existence.

With my term not expiring until January 1997, I pledge to continue to work diligently for District II. Likewise, I will be available to assist the next District II Director in any way that I possibly can.

SPJST Scholarship application

Czech Heritage Week October 22-28, 1995 A Great. Success During the 1995 legislative session, the Texas Legislature passed a "Czech Heritage Week" Resolution where this week will be observed annually the last full week in October. In 1996, the last full week in Octoberwill be October 20 to 26.

The intent of this resolution and of those who promoted the passage of this resolution was to promote the preservation of Czech heritage and culture. The purpose of celebrating "Czech Heritage Week" was to unify Czechs in each Czech community and to provide Czech cultural activities for families and children as it is through helping that children learn about their history, traditions, and customs that they will become proud of their Czech ethnicity.

The most successful program was the distribution of the Czech curriculum to school librarians and teachers. This program was developed by the TravisWilliamson Counties Czech Society and was distributed to local schools by Czech Heritage Society Chapters and the SPJST Home Office in Temple. (Czechs in each community need to contact the schools' librarians and/or curriculum directors and teachers to inquire about viewing and obtaining information about these educational packets. While making contact with the local schools, Czechs need to inquire if "Czech Heritage Week" was celebrated during October 22-28, 1995.)

Equally successful were church services at both the Catholic and Brethren

churches. Programs included Czech music and Czech services. Community programs were also successful where the Czechs in the community unified to have services together or a Czech cultural program.

The intent for each Czech community should be to form an alliance among Czech groups and have a unified program where children will be learning about their culture and history. The goal of this unified program should he to preserve Czech heritage by educating the children. This goal cannot be reached by Czech groups competing against each other or by using "Czech Heritage Week" as a money-making project. A part of this unified group would he to learn from other cultures who have been successful in preserving and promoting their ethnicity and culture.

I personally was involved in testifying for the passage of the "Czech Heritage Week" Resolution. The purpose of the testimony was to show the need to preserve and promote Czech heritage through educational community programs and school activities. 1995 was a good beginning for celebrating 1996 should begin soon and be an ongoing process.

—Lanita To the Editor: As we reflect on this past Christmas season, I felt that it was important to comment on the examples that just occurred that make our community so special. The gestures and activities only demonstrate that God is truly in the hearts and minds of so many wonderful citizens The citizens of Temple cannot go unrecognized for the "True Spirit of Community and Love" that was demonstrated when many rose to the occasion in order to assure (that) children and families who were having difficult times would be able to enjoy and celebrate Christmas.

As the word spread regarding the dilemma of the Santa Pal Project, it was truly amazing to see all those who came forward ... led by the Temple Chamber of Commerce Leadership Temple committee, Lisa Winkler, Brian Vanicek, Keith Orie and Amy Mauk . . . As the

result, this year's Santa Pal Project, through this united effort, touched over 700 families. Some 254 families with 759 children were directly provided Christmas presents and 90 families were sponsored by local groups and businesses. The balance of the families were provided presents by Blue Santa, Martha's Kitchen and other generous groups. It is times such as this that we can all stand together, as Christians and have happy filled hearts.

Chairman Pokladnik reminded the Board members this was a special Board meeting to discuss SPJST's 100th Anniversary and Actuary John Agee would he present to review asset allocation and on-going servicing of the Universal Life product.

100TH ANNIVERSARY - President Leshikar confirmed three bands had been con tatted and agreed to perform at the celebration.

Legal Advisor Kacir moved for the 100th Anniversary celebration to begin at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, July 12, with the gate opening at noon and run through 6:00 p.m.

Sunday, July 13. Seconded by Director Vavra. Motion carried unanimously.

Director Vavra moved to begin advertising and distributing flyers to the local lodges immediately after this special meeting concerning the decisions made for the 100th Anniversary. Seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir. Motion carried unanimously.

The update of the SPJST history will be ready in 1997. It was suggested to have a 100th Anniversary brochure which would be a commemorative brochure similar to the Convention Brochure. Director Vavra moved to approve the brochure and sell advertising pages in the brochure and authorize a professional company to design the brochure. Seconded by Secretary-Treasurer Anglin. Motion carried unanimously.

There was a discussion about inviting dancers and Beseda dancers to pertbrm. It was decided a quilt display would be of interest to many of the members.

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved to authorize between $7,000 and $8,000 to develop a walk-through displaying the SPJST history. Seconded by Director Bayer. Motion carried unanimously.

President Leshikar moved to make space available at the Expo Center to local lodges wishing to have exhibits. Seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir. Motion carried unanimously.

It was decided by common consent to have the Texas Czech Cherkerhoard band, film available for viewing; and information on the Czech Chair; TOCA; and SPJST's scholarships available. The museum at the Home Office would be available for viewing both days. Director Bayer moved to do an updated video of the Home Office narrated by a professional speaker which showed the building, and the "SPJST in action".

Seconded by Director Kohutek, carried unanimously. It was suggested to contact Ron Stone of KPRC TV and Bob Phillips of-Texas Country Report about doing a documentary on the SPJST on their shows.

A recess was taken from 2:50 p.m. to 3:05 p.m.

By common consent it was decided to allow five and ten vendors to offer inexpensive meals as long as their food is not in competition with the youth clubs.

The Home Office would hiive available for sale advertising items at the Home Office.

The Supreme Lodge will be visiting the Expo Center during the January meeting to view the facilities and see what is available for rent through the center.

There was a discussion concerning meals at noon and evening. Snacks consisting of candy, baked goods, snow cones, pop corn, etc., could be provided for sale by any youth club which wanted to participate. Legal Advisor Kacir moved to have a free ' The meeting adjourned at 4:45 p.m. meal Sunday between 11:30 and 1:30 for the local lodge leaders and former leaders; 50 year and 75 year pin recipients; sales representatives; and presidents of youth clubs.

Director Kohutek moved there would be no free tickets for the Saturday noon, Saturday evening, and Sunday noon meals. Tickets for these meals have to be ordered 60 days in advance and the monies for the meals received 30 days in advance.

Seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir. Motion carried unanimously.

Actuary John Agee was welcomed to the meeting.

Vice President Mikeska asked permission for two of his key staff people to hear the actuary's presentation. On motion by Director Bayer, seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir it was agreed for SFM McBride and employee Kathy Fritz to be present for actuary Agee's presentation. Carried unanimously. Actuary Agee had been invited to attend the Board meeting to review the cash value and asset allocation testing and the on going servicing of Universal Life. During, the discussion and review of Universal Life, it was pointed out that Universal Life has special servicing needs due to the flexibility of the certificate. This flexibility helps meet the needs of our members.

Vice President Mikeska discussed steps he had taken such as state wide agent training classes; a special Universal Life course now being taken by 200 sales representatives; and a new process of mailing copies of Universal Life annual statements to sales rep resentatives so the members needs can be evaluated.

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 6, Cottonwood Reports on January Meeting Our January 6, 1996, meeting was called to order by our President Johnnie Krizan. The pledge was led by the youth club.

All the officers were installed by Sister Lanita Anglin.

The minutes were read and approved.

We had 15 adults present and two guests,

Vice President Mikeska reviewed the challenges he was having in locating a good software package to enable the sales representative to better review and present the product. Vice President Mikeska's goal is for each member with a Universal Life certificate to be contacted and their certificate be reviewed.

Recess was taken from 12:15 p.m. to 1:25 p.m.

There was a discussion about having a SPJST choral group consisting of members throughout the state. President Leshikar made a motion that we have a choral group with the Supreme Lodge selecting the conductor. There would be three rehearsals with the only reimbursement for participants being meals and mileage on the days of the rehearsal. The choral group would perform once each day of the celebration.

Seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir. Motion carried unanimously.

29, Taylor Reports on January Meeting Lodge

Lodge 29, Taylor held its January, meeting on Sunday, January 14 at 4 p.m.

All officers were present except Property Committee Member Allen Mathews.

Janet Kaiser read the minutes and gave the treasurer's report.

Correspondence from the Home Office was read. We will host the State 42 Tournament which will be held at our lodge hall on March 23 at 9:30 a.m.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. Also, our member Anna Holubec will he reaching the age of 96 this year. This is wonderful!

New members accepted into our lodge were Patricia Evans, Donald Thiele and Jennifer Faltesek.

We voted to have a full page ad in the 1996 convention hook.

This year's annual May Fete will be held on the first Saturday in May instead of on Sunday. We will have a horseshoe tournament as in the past years.

Property Committee will have its monthly meeting the last Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. Our monthly meeting will he February 11, 1996, at 4 p.m.

We invite everyone to the hall on Friday nights for live music and delicious hamburgers prepared by the Youth Club parents.

47, Seaton Installs Officers at January Meeting

opened the meeting at 2 p.m. Flag Bearers Crystal Bartek and Janet Baca brought in the flags and lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

We remained standing for a moment of silent prayer in memory of Brother Charlie Hrachovy, Sr., age 90 of Buckholts. He died suddenly on Wednesday, January 3 at his home. He was a regular at lodge meetings held on Sunday afternoons. He attended our Christmas party on December 10 and he was one of the age 80 and over group recognized in attendance. Brother Hrachovy was a member of the SPJST for 72 years.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the family and I know he will he missed by so many family members, friends and neighbors and fellow lodge members. May he rest in eternal peace and his memory live among us forever. Another member, Bozena (Bessie) Moreland had passed away without our knowledge. She also had been a member of our lodge for many. years. She was a member of the pioneer Frank Motl family of Seaton and had lived in the San Angelo area.

Sympathy is extended to the survivors and may she rest in eternal peace.

Those we know of as being hospital patients were Johnnie Kotrla, Jerry David Pechal, Linda Machicek, Nelda Marek, Martha Schneider Dubcak, Pat Pechal, and Walter John Hanusch, who passed away since the meeting. Also, Robert Haisler, Sr. is undergoing tests at the hospital. Hope everyone is improving since the hospital stay or doctor visits. If you have a family member of our lodge in the hospital, let me or Joyce Skrabanek know so a get-well card can be sent to cheer them up. Oh, also, I almost forgot to mention that Ann Balusek had taken a fall and has been a patient in the hospital.

Get well so that you may come to the meeting with husband Dan. There was only one visitor at the meeting, Freddie Schroeder.

Brother Willie Kohutek installed the officers and trustees for 1996. Thanks, Brother Willie. He was also committed to Lodge 187 so they left to Round Rock for that installation. He had spoken about the insurance and the various figures of the society and its growth and the upcoming convention in June, 1996.

The secretary read the names of the officers, trustees, and sales representatives for the roll call. The minutes of the December 3 meeting were read and approved as read. She also read the names of members changing their certificates and announced a new member, Christopher Alexander Hinckley.

Correspondence included a letter from Brother Howard Leshikar commending the lodge that they elected a fraternalist of the year and another letter to inform us of the scheduled tournaments, which are: Tarok Tournament

The board minutes were read by Edwin Vasicek, secretary. They included the replacement of tiles in the bar and the purchase of two more electric roasters.

The tarok tournament menu and workers needed had been discussed in the December 18 board meeting, also. The price of beer increased at the New Year's Eve dance and to he left at the new price for the following events scheduled in the year. Ginger Greger had stated there may be a district May Fete at Star Hall in'May. The officers' reports were presented.

President Skrabanek thanked all for the cooperation during the past year and he also thanked all of the workers at the Christmas party, New Year's Eve dance and the tarok tournament, held on the previous cold, cold day. Also, he thanked the chairpersons for the great job and the sales representatives for the new members written. Thanks for all of the food brought to our doings.

On to bigger and better things in 1996.

Vice President Pechal informed us to pick up a set of rules and regulations for each family. He said the tickets are going well for the fund raiser in March. They are asking for silent auction items at this event.

that the lodge will again receive the gold award at the incentive awards banquet.

She also thanked all the workers that helped in any way at the tarok tournament. She mentioned the KNCT-TV appearance by the Home Office and the lodge contribution called in by President Calvin Skrabanek. Tarok instructions at family nights and also Czech lessons will be offered this year and the pilot program for dance instructions will be held for the youth clubs at Seaton Star Hall.

Secretary Dolores Skrabanek stated a drive for the construction of a tabernacle is underway. We voted to donate $200 to this project and therefore, the engraving of the name of SPJST Lodge 47 on the permanent plaque.

Gladys Marek gave her report for the financial secretary and the New Year's Eve dance ticket sales.

Youth Leader Ginger Greger gave her report of 24 members, five adults and one new member. Ginger thanked the teens of the lodge who delivered the Christmas dinner to the elderly and ailing at their homes. A total of 26 meals were delivered. The youth will be trying a beseda circle or possibly two for the district competition in July. Matt Hanusch was a new member. The youth club will be holding a chili, hot dog and frito pie supper on Friday, February 16. They will serve from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The auction will he held from 7:30 p.m. until ? If you have something you could donate to this fund raiser, please bring the item to the meeting on February 4 or to the event that night. All donations are welcome. They will need money in the coming months, so please support their projects.

The chairpersons all gave their respective reports. Special thanks to Dennis and Mary Lea Krcha for chairing the kitchen for the Christmas party and also the breakfast for the New Year's Eve dance.

The lodge workshop sponsored by the Supreme Lodge will he held on Saturday, February 24 for all attending from across Texas. The incentive banquet will he held at Flag Hall, Lodge 24, Cyclone later in the day. Be watching the Vestnik for the time of these two events on the same day.

We scheduled a workday for Saturday, January 13 at 8 a.m. The audit of all books held by chairpersons and officers was set for Tuesday, January 9 at 7 p.m.

Another date of importance will he the elected delegates going through the bylaws and presenting their changes to the by-laws committee before the deadline and the date is Monday, January 29 at 7 p.m. If anyone has a change they want the delegates to present, bring it to this meeting. The change must he submitted to the committee and even if the committee denies the change, it can be brought up by the lodge delegates at the convention.

The new business was the naming of the committees by the president and vice president.

Lt. Randy Sijansky, a Nueces County sheriff's deputy since 1984, was recently elected vice president of the Texas Criminal Justice Information Users

Group. The statewide organization includes officials from various law enforcement agencies, probation departments, data processing units and others working in criminal justice.

Sijansky said the users group works to expedite the exchange of information between various local, state and federal agencies. He begins his two-year term next month.

Jerry and Willie May Ermis are grandparents again. They have a new grandson, Andrew David Ermis. He weighed in at 9 lbs. and 1 ounce and he was 21 inches long.

It is with great sadness that I report that Pearl Hanka passed away on January 7. She was a lodge officer for many years. She served on many committees and worked bingo. She was past president of the Birthday Sisters. She also wrote many letters in the Vestnik.

La Parita, No. 161, Jourdanton Reports on December Meeting Lodge

On December 10, 1995, SPJST Lodge 161 of La Parita held its quarterly meeting and Christmas party at the Jourdanton Civic Center at 11:45 a.m.

President Koch called the meeting to order with a welcome to all. President Koch introduced his nephew, Barry Koch and wife Helen, from SPJST Lodge 203,

San Antonio Central. Eighteen members and three guests were in attendance.

The Pledge of Allegiance was said by all with a moment of silence for Brother Victor Pivonka who is sick. Our prayers are with him.

Our table prayer was given by Sister/Reporter Virginia Valchar before we adjourned for lunch. A delicious brisket barbecue and all the trimmings were picked up by President Koch and Vice President Don Valchar at Jason's Pit Barbecue in Pleasonton. The desserts and drinks were furnished by members and guests. Delicious!

President Koch called the meeting to order after-the noon meal and asked if everyone's tummies were full.

Minutes of our previous meeting were read by Secretary/Treasurer Tillie Koch.

A correction to the minutes and to the reporter's Vestnik report are as follows: Gussie Spacek did not make a motion for for gag gifts for our December meeting.

She said that if we have gag gifts, everyone should bring gag gifts. Also, if we were just bringing a gift, it should not he more than $5. Also, Bettie House had asked for members to bring old eyeglasses to be given to the Lion's Club, not the Rotary. Sorry for the goof!

Sister Bettie gave the bill for the district fall meeting gift to Treasurer Tillie Koch.

Next, President Koch asked for the reading of any correspondence. He read the Christmas greeting from President Howard Leshikar of the Supreme Lodge.

President Koch asked Lodge 203 sales representative Barry Koch to speak.

Barry reported on the new Senior Life insurance. It is a whole life insurance for people between 50 and 80 years of age.

He also reported on a youth term insurance for a child up to 24 years of age. He said they were both good insurance plans.

Vice President Don Valchar read information on fraternal activities and handed out slips for the "100 Pennies" drive.

President Koch read off the names of two new members—James Romo and Candis O'Riley, both of Charlotte. Sister Mildred Bridges made a motion to accept these two new members and Brother Lloyd House seconded the motion. The motion carried.

Sister Bettie House gave a report from the district. She said we had a nice group showing at the district fall meeting. Even Lodge 202 sent some of its memebrs.

She said the spring district meeting will be in San Antonio. From SPJST night at the Missions baseball game, $125 went to the SPJST Scholarship Fund. She also gave birthday and anniversary announcements since our last meeting.

Congratulations to all celebrants!

Next, Brother Lloyd House made a motion to accept Barry Koch as a lodge member. Brother Vince Pivonka seconded. The motion carried. (Barry Koch was our lodge's first new member in a long-time to be signed up.) Brother Barry said there will be another SPJST Night on March 16, 1996, at a Spurs game. Tickets will be $8.

New business to be discussed included electing a delegate to the convention.

Sister Vlasta Juricek nominated Sister Secretary/Treasurer Tillie Koch. Sister Mildred Bridges seconded the nomination. Brother Lloyd House nominated Sister Bettie House. Brother Ernest Spacek seconded. Sister Tillie Koch was elected as delegate. Sister Gussie Spacek nominated Sister Bettie House for alternate. Sister Virginia Valchar seconded.

The motion carried.

The financial report was given by Secretary/Treasurer Tillie Koch.

Lodge 160, San Angelo Presents Scenes from Christmas Party

Brother Lloyd House motioned that we have our meetings at the Jourdanton Civic Center in 1996. Sister Gussie Spacek seconded. The motion carried.

Brother Lloyd House asked to have a report on officers' pay. He made a motion to cut the secretary's pay to $100 and the treasurer's pay to $25. Sister Bettie House said she would take the treasurer's job for $100. Bettie House seconded the motion. Votes were taken.

Members voted to keep the secretary/treasurer's pay as is. The motion was defeated.

Next, Sister Mildred Bridges-made a motion by acclamation to keep the same officers as last year. Brother Vince Pivonka seconded. The motion carried.

Members donated quite a bit of canned goods to the A.C.C.E.P.T. program for Christmas. Thank you, members!

Brother Dan Valchar motioned to adjourn and Brother Lloyd House seconded. The meeting adjourned and gifts were exchanged.

Lodge 182, Falls County Reports on Party and Meeting Dear Readers, Lodge 182, Falls County held their combined Thanksgiving/Christmas party and meeting on November 17, 1995, at Lott, Texas, at the Masonic Lodge Building on Main Street. We had a very good turnout of members and guests for this occasion. The lodge furnished turkey and dressing and members brought side dishes to go with it.

After the meal, our meeting was held at which we elected officers. The officers elected are: President Donald Beckendorf Vice President Nick Komar Secretary Darlene Komar Treasurer Curtis Treat Reporter Vernon Reiger Youth Leader Judy Treat Assistant Youth Leaders Glendia Treat and DeAnn Beckendorf Reports Nick Komar presented a report on the Market on Main Street fund raiser which was a success.

Judy Treat presented a report on the successful blood drive. We had 18 donors which is very good for our first drive.

A rose of sharon was donated to Chilton Elementary School in honor of the children of the Oklahoma bombing.

The roses have been planted and they will have a presentation at one of the PTA meetings in the near future. The report was presented by Judy Treat in the absence of Aileen Kuropata, who was in charge of this project.

After the meeting, there were drawings for the door prizes whiCh were lap quilts, handmade by Aileen Kuropata, and assorted gifts by the Treat and Beckendorf families. Everyone received a goodie hag and candy canes. - Everyone enjoyed conversation and games following. It was a lovely evening.

180, Burleson Reports on January Meeting

Lodge

President Louis Grochaske called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 2, 1996.

After electing a new ,vice president, Charles Schneider, and reporter, Julia Dueser, the officers for 1996 were installed and the meeting continued.

The trustees then elected their officers for 1996 and they are: PresidentCharles Schneider, Vice Chairman-John Hilcher, and all other positions were filled.

A good report was turned in on the New Year's Eve dance and everyone had a good time.

Some of the lodge members helped Leo and Oleta Keeting celebrate their

50th wedding anniversary on Saturday, January 13. All enjoyed a delicious barbecue dinner served at the Peppermint Club in Burleson, Texas. We hope they have many more years.

It was our pleasure to elect Estelle Hurtik to represent us at the XXVII Convention to be held in Arlington, Texas, on June 10-13, 1996.

The members voted on Conway Wheat as a new member.

Remember, our lodge meetings are on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. Trustee meetings are on the same night at 6:30 p.m.

Don't forget our country and western dances every Saturday night with dancing from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

On February 11, the lodge will have a clean-up day. So join us for a day of fellowship and work.

The meeting adjourned to a social hour and a fried chicken dinner.

The next meeting is February 6, 1996, at 6:30 p.m.

183, Arlington Reports on January Meeting

The regular meeting at Lodge 183, Arlington was held on Monday evening, January 8, 1996, with 19 members present.

The lodge wants to thank 'Irene Pustejovsky for a job well done for the last two years as sunshine chairperson.

Dorothy Adamek is now our new sunshine chairperson for 1996.

The minutes of the November, 1995, meeting were read by Ken Cepak and approved with one minor correction.

Coi-nmunications were read by President Jeanne Roznos. All other reports were given and accepted as read.

New members voted into our lodge for November and December are Katie Rose Stiborek, Brandon, Nicholas and Spencer Roznos, Randy Adamek and Eve Colestock. The lodge would like to thank our sales representatives for achieving our goal and getting us the Gold Award for 1995.

Under old business, Johnny Adamek reported on our Christmas party that was held on December 9, 1995.

After a short discussion, a motion was made and seconded to buy a full page ad in the Metroplex SPJST Convention Souvenir book.

A Hug Is Always Nice Lodge 196 President Bob Hutto gives a hug to District Five President and Lodge 196 Treasurer Evelyn Mikeska. The two were attending a seminar on the SPJST's new Senior Life insurance program conducted

Under new business, a motion was made and seconded to advertise our bingo and hall rentals in three church bulletins: St. Maria Goretti, St. Matthews in Arlington, and Immaculate Conception in Grand Prairie.

The lodge is also considering having the American Czech Brass Band from Nebraska to play at our hall on March 8, 1996. More details will come on this event.

Family Night will he January 26, 1996. Johnny and Dorothy Adamek will be preparing lasagna for the main course.

196, Houston - West Reports on December Meeting and Christmas Party Lodge

On Sunday, December 15, 1995, Lodge 196, Houston-West held a short business meeting and Christmas party.

We made final plans for our New Year's Dance and received three new members into our lodge, after which we enjoyed a fine Christmas dinner and lots Of good fellowship. We had a real nice number attending and several guests.

After dinner, Santa visited the children and presented them with bags of goodies, and some of the "older children" were lucky enough to get a bag of goodies, tool'.

The Runnels, Concho and Tom Green Counties Czech Heritage Society of the Concho Valley met December 3, 1995, in the SPJST Hall in Rowena.

President Louis Kokes welcomed everyone and led the Pledge of Allegiance to the American flag in both English and Czech.

10/VESTNIK—Wednesday, January 24, 1996 Directors Elizabeth Walther (Runnels County) Eddie Mae Huebner (Runnels County) Ben Schroeder (Concho County) Leona Dorotik (Tom Green County) Dorothy Kokes (Tom Green County) Elizabeth Walther, Nancy Dry and David Blazek reported on the State Czech Heritage Society meeting in Ennis on November 18.

Local and state dues were collected.

Twenty-one members were present and two new members joined.

Members voted to donate $50 towards the transportation and erection of a Czech bell and belfry that is a gift to the Czech Heritage Society of Texas and to all the Texas Czechs after the festival was over from the Wallachian Open Air Museum in Roznov, Czech Republic.

The hell and belfry were assembled and displayed at the American Folklife Festival on June 23 through July 4, 1995, at the Smithsonian Institution Mall in Washington, D.C. Wooden belfries in Moravia were communial gathering places that did not have churches in small villages. Their bells tolled to announce births, weddings, and deaths. When Czechs came to Texas in the 1800s, they constructed belfries in

their new communities to remind them of their homeland.

The 1996 meeting dates will be February 18, May 11, August 18, and December 1. Please mark your calendars. The meetings will continue to be in the SPJST Hall in Rowena.

President Kokes thanked Elizabeth Walther, Elizabeth Urbanek, and Lula Maracek for decorating the hall with the beautiful Christmas decorations for the occasion, and he thanked everyone who brought food for the dinner. The turkey and ham were purchased by the local chapter and smoked by David Blazek.

The president also expressed his thanks to him.

Members brought canned food for the needy Christmas baskets.

Dorothy Kokes, the president's wife, had a special cake baked and decorated with Czech dancers.

For entertainment, Edmond Brosh played his accordian in honor of the following anniversaries: Mr. and Mrs. Lamar Kopecky's 47th anniversary, Toni and Benny Schroeder's 49th anniversary, Janell and Bud Schokley's 45th anniversary, and Louis and Dorothy Kokes' 48th anniversary.

Gustina Pustka celebrated her 90th birthday on this day. Everyone sang

"Happy Birthday" to her. Everyone had a good time. Couples danced to the music.

Czech Class at Alief

Another

Alief Community Evening School under auspices of AISD (Alief Independent School District) is again offering a conversational Czech course at Hastings High School. The location of this school is between Bellaire Boulevard on the south and Alief-Clodine on the north of the southwest side of the intersection of Cook Road and High Star Drive in the community of Alief. (This

formerly independed settlement is located in the southwestern Houston.)

The first lesson of this 12-week course, designed to develop basic skill in the Czech language wherever it is spoken, will be on February 7, 1996 and henceforth, once a week on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuition, set by the school, will be $59 and the instructor will be again John J. Karas of Houston.

Dear Readers, District Two Youth will host the annual Valentine Skating Party on Sunday, February 11, 1996, from 5:15 to 7:15 p.m. at Skate Haven in Temple. Skate Haven is located just north of Temple High School on North 31st Street.

I hope everyone will make plans to attend. I know so many of you look forward to this event to see the friends you have not seen since camp and Youth Achievement Day. You may bring a friend and let's hope your friend will become active and join us at the monthly meetings and other activities. We, will also have a drawing for door prizes.

Dear Readers, New Tabor SPJST Youth Club was very busy during the month of December. We had our regular monthly meeting with a guest speaker from the Caldwell Volunteer Fire Department. Clarence Sefcik spoke to us on fire safety in our homes: We also made Christmas decorations.

After the meeting, our adult lodge held their annual memorial service. Our youth club participated by lighting candles for the members who had passed away in 1995. Youth club members also sang Christmas songs.

12/VESTNIK—Wednesday, January 24, 1996 New Tabor Youth Club also had a Christmas party. The party began with a hayride to Caldwell to join other groups to look at Christmas lights. When we returned to the hall we had hot dogs and roasted marshmallows. We did not have much luck starting a fire (the wood was wet) so we roasted our marshmallows over the gas stove. After we ate, we exchanged gifts. Everyone had a fun time.

2. The Noun in Czech.

All Czech nouns are classified as being either masculine, feminine or neuter. If they end in a hard or neutral consonant, they are classed as masculine; if they end in "a" they are feminine, and if they end in "o", they are neuter. Therefore, the noun "park" is masculine, "lampa" feminine and "okno" neuter.

3. The Demonstrative Adjectives The demonstrative adjective "that" is translated in Czech by TEN, TA, TO. TEN is always used with masculine nouns; TA with feminine and TO with neuter.

Homework 1. Copy the expressions and vocabulary into a notebook and memorize them.

2. Memorize the conjugation of miti "to have."

3. Classify the nouns that are given in the vocabulary as to their gender.

4. Place the correct demonstrative adjective ten, ta, to before each noun in the vocabulary. Example: ten park, ta lampa, to okno.

Get your friends or parents to help you with the pronunciation. Do them together. Clip and save each lesson, and compile them into notebook form, if you desire. Set aside a regular time each week for the study of these lessons. Read the following verse together, and see if you can translate it.

Deer Hunters: Here's Something for You! The SPJST will again sponsor its annual Deer Antler Contest. Only SPJST members are eligible to participate in this contest. Two $50 prizes will be awarded.

One prize will be presented to the hunter whose deer has the widest horn spread (measured from the outside to outside of horns).

The other prize will go to the deer with the most points (must be able to hang a ring on it to be qualified as a point).

To enter the contest, hunters must submit a photograph of the deer along with the contest entry t'orm appearing on page three of the Vestnik. The form must be completed and signed by a game warden,

highway patrolman, sheriff or public official.

This contest applies only to Texas white tail deer.

Your entry must he postmarked before January 31, 1996, to qualify.

The general white tail season began on November 4 and will run through January 1. The South Texas season will run a week later, starting on November 11 and running through January 7.

CZECH CULTURE

Researchers Building Northeastern Bohemia Data Base We are announcing a new research project which includes areas in northeastern Bohemia/Czech Republic. We hope you will join us as we build a data base of information about our ancestors which will develop into a great research tool for all of us. But even more than that, we are hoping to build our ancestor's lives in the old country with the help of the Czech village historians and to follow our ancestor's paths to America and establishing their new lives here. To help us do this, we will need you to send us photocopies of your family history material, charts, emigration facts, personal histories, any "family tradition" stories, tell us about your trips to the area and finding your relatives, etc. We will scrutinize, analyze, and then put it all on our evergrowing data base which will include a listing of surnames with birth dates, Czech villages with house numbers, their migration data, their U.S. residences and their experiences here. We plan to explore all facets of their lives.

It will be most interesting.

We have tried to reach many interested parties, but we know we have missed many, too. If you know other people researching this area, please feel free to copy this mailing and send it on to them. Or you can send in names and addresses to Kathryn Betlach Dankowski (see address below) for processing. You can also distribute these to your area genealogical societies, Sokol or lodge halls. We would appreciate your help in that way. We are also open to any suggestions you might have of any type to make this more interesting and complete. We will try to answer your questions, too.

Please let us know if you want to get more involved with the project. We can probably find work for you. We are also sending you a list of the villages with the German names in parenthesis and a list of surnames with spelling variations we have so far. I am sure they are not all included yet.

If we have you on our mailing list and you are not researching this area, please let Kathryn Betlach Dankowski know and have your name removed.

We are doing all of this with a sincere interest in the subject, a hope to help other people (and I might add) and out of the goodness of our hearts.
