Working Together Gets Things Done

United We Stand .

(There's a fresh new year ahead of us. A chance to work together and achieve more than when we work apart. In today's column, we hear from Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar and Supreme Lodge Vice President Leonard Mikeska and get their views on how both the fraternal and financial components are necessary and complimentary elements of our organization. -Editor) The thought that something is right or good is a powerful motivator for everyone. What, in your opinion, is "right" about the way the SPJST does business?

When the membership figures are tallied, we may, for the first time in many years, see a net increase in the number of members. This would reflect a very significant turnaround.

All of that doesn't ignore the fact, that on a local lodge level, some of our lodges had a really tough time paying bills and keeping their doors open. Many of our local lodges are struggling to stay active.

We, as management, have to do more in 1996 to address this situation.

What about highpoints-real victories that you experienced in 1995? Can you elaborate?

President Leshikar: What's right? It gets back to our founding principles. What's right is that we're an organization based on the concept of "members helping members." There's a lot each of us can do on our own, sure, but when we put our skills together, we can achieve a lot more.

Vice President Mikeska: There are a lot of things right about how the SPJST carries out its activities. One of the most remarkable is the way we have been able to balance fraternal activities and programs with the sales of our modern fraternal life insurance products. To be able to care for both people's social and life insurance needs. I believe you could say our fraternal activities and programs and fraternal life insurance go together like love and marriage ... You can't have one without the other.

Our fraternal programs and activities are what really get people excited; while life insurance programs are the backbone and lifeblood. The life insurance is the fuel that drives the fraternal engine that gives us vitality.

What kind of year did the SPJST have in 1995?

President Leshikar: As I previously stated, I was very happy with the progress that many of our local lodges were able to record in 1995. Apart from that, I believe that the Insurance Department made great leaps in 1995 in the area of providing new insurance products and service to our members.

Vice President Mikeska: Victories? The outstanding growth in sales, premium income and the success of the summer membership drive.

Add to that the success of the new ModTerm product and the response to the new Senior Life product.

We also made significant progress in getting every member matched with a sales representative contact. We also trained 30 new sales representatives and layed the groundwork for establishing three new lodges. Also, at this point it looks like we're going to have something like 15 "Million Dollar Producers" for 1995. There were a lot of highpoints.

What about frustrations-or difficult decisions that you had to make in 1995? Can you elaborate?

President Leshikar: It was frustrating President Leshikar: There were several areas in which we had a teriffic year. First, our Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program, which has just completed its third year, will show signifiant gains in all areas.

This program identifies the many activities our lodges are doing. Another area is the increase in participation in our youth program, including camp, LIT workshops and Youth Achievement Day. This year was also a record breaker for our 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive. Finally, in our insurance area, we introduced two new products, Mod-Term and Senior Life. These two should go a long way towards meeting the needs of our members.

This kind of a performance is a tribute to our membership. It really reflects what I was saying earlier about "members helping members."

Vice President Mikeska: I believe that when the figures are tallied, I believe that they will show we had a very good year

That's just one thing, but it's symbolic of the decisions - on a daily basis - that you sometimes have to deliver ...

On the lodge level, it was frustrating to see some of our older and more established lodges having to cope with difficult times. Another thing. Not really a frustration, but something that we keyed on last year and will again this year is "documentation." Closer scrutiny of fraternal benefit societies by the federal government dictates that we maintain accurate records of our fraternal commitments.

Vice President Mikeska: Our sales representatives work hard trying to meet the needs of our members and our prospective members. It's always difficult when we have to turn somebody down for health reasons.

He also assisted Youth Leader Annie Vahalik with handing out the gifts. A bag of goodies was given to each youth member and Santa. Apples and oranges were given to the adults. Bingo was played and enjoyed. Door prize winners were Joshua Siptak and Vickie Zak. A delicious lunch consisting of a large variety of goodies brought by the members was served. The meal blessing was given by President Siptak.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, January 14, 1996, at the Youth Center beginning at 2 p.m. Delegates will be elected. Lunch will be served as usual and door prizes will be given. See you there!

SPJST Sets State Tournament Dates and Locations The SPJST 1996 State Tournaments will be held at the following lodges: 'Taroks February 10 at Lodge 15, Buckholts Straight Domino March 9 at Lodge 17, New Tabor "42" Domino March 29 at Lodge 29, Taylor Horseshoes April 27 at Lodge 66, Waco Mark your calendars and make plans to come enjoy these games with your friends from across Texas. Registration for all state tournaments will be at 8:30

a.m. with play beginning at 9:30 a.m.

SPJST membership is required at the state tournaments.

Lodges having the most players in taroks and winning the most games in dominoes and horseshoes will win a prize instead of a trophy for 1996.

24, Cyclone New Meeting Date Sunday, January 14 Lodge

Dear Members, Please note that at our December meeting, members voted to hold our January, February, and March lodge meetings on the second Sunday of the month at 3 p.m. This was done for two reasons: First, to have our youth and adult lodge meetings back-to-back on the same day; and second, as an effort to increase attendance at lodge meetings.

We had previously been meeeting on the second Monday of each month.

Christmas Party at Hit Before I get into a summary of the December meeting, just a few words about the lodge Christmas party we celebrated on December 9. It really was a lot of fun. Approximately 170 adults and young people turned out for the event which included a social hour, youth program and holiday banquet.

As an added attraction to this year's party, members brought their quarters and played for some great prizes on the spin ning wheel. Members in attendance also received a copy of the "Flag Hall Times," a six-page newsletter highlighting the events of the past year. If you did not attend and would like a copy, please give me a call at 985-0007 and I'll get a copy to you. We'll have a few photos from the party in an upcoming issue of the Vestnik.

Oh, and one more thing! To all of you who attended the Christmas party: Thanks for coming! And, remember, this is your lodge and we would also encourage you to attend the regular monthly meetings and be a part of one of the many special committees that are working to make Lodge 24 something really special in the community. And, remember, that next meeting date is Sunday, January 14 at 3 p.m.

December Lodge Meeting Following the dinner social, President Bobby Hoelscher called the December meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. All officers, with the exception of Secretary Arleen Mayeux, were in attendance. In her absence, Reporter Brian Vanicek took the minutes.

President Hoelscher began the meeting with a tribute and moment of silence in memory of all of the Lodge 24 members who had passed away during 1995.

Lodge Treasurer Penny Coots then delivered her report. In addition to her monthly update, she also presented information on the big lodge fundraiser scheduled for January 27.

Reports were then delivered by the various standing committees, including LaVerne Cabla, who made a Kitchen Report; Rosamand Baker, who made a Bar Report; and Louise Zavodny, who made a report on lodge bookings. It was noted that the Rogers Volunteer Fire Department had used the lodge's barbecue barn for a recent fund raiser. A motion was made, seconded and passed to return the $100 rental fee which they had paid.

ered the Youth Club report. And what a banner year they had. The icing on the cake has to be their participation in both the Temple and Rosebud Christmas parades. In both outtings, the youth club's float "Christmas Around the World," took first place honors. Keep up the good work!

Outgoing Vice President and Fraternal Activities Coordinator Dan Sebek made a brief presentation, thanking all of those who volunteered in any way to make the 1995 Christmas party a success. He also thanked lodge members and officers for their support over the past year and expressed his willingness to continue to be an active player in the activities of Lodge 24. Thanks, Dan — for everything — and for your continued support!

President Hoelscher then delivered his report, including information on upcoming SPJST statewide events. He noted that the SPJST's statewide Recognition and Incentive Banquet would again be held at Lodge 24, Cyclone. The date is February 24. Watch the Vestnik for more details as that date approaches.

Under new business, members elected Barbara Macek by acclamation to serve as lodge secretary. Thanks, Barbara, for accepting the responsibility. You know this place backwards and forwards and we know you'll do a great job as secretary.

Under other new business, Sister Bernnice Sebek inquired about the lodge's annual contribution to the SPJST Memorial' Scholarship Fund in memory of our deceased members. Treasurer Penny Coots reponded that the contribution is made twice annually — once in July and again in January.

As previously stated, members then voted to hold the January, February and March lodge meetings on the second Sunday of the month at 3 p.m. Richard Greger made the motion, seconded by Rhonda Greger. Motion passed.

The final item of new business related to recommendations of the committee assigned to address Rules and Regulations. New lodge hall rental rates were approved as recommended. There was also discussion regarding the development on a new facility manager position. In the absence of Trustee Chairman Sherry Tyroch, other items requring a member vote were tabled until the January meeting.

Due to June's sudden illness and being in the hospital, the lodge fraternal activities coordinator and June's brother, Chester Stasney, accepted the award in her behalf.

Brief reports and remarks were made by our special guests: Director Hanus, Representative Hegwood, District President Mikeska, and FAC Buri.

The 20 pots of poinsettias were given as door prizes.

District Five Director Louis Hanus installed the 1996 officers. The meeting was then adjourned.

San Jacinto Lodge 91, Crosby Christmas social was held at China-Ko Restaurant on Saturday, December 2, 1995, at noon.

Special guests introduced were District Five Director Louis Hanus, State Field Representative Helen Hegwood and husband King, District Five President Evelyn Mikeska, and District Five Fraternal Activities Coordinator Fred Buri and wife Jo Ann. The room, decorated in the Christmas season and tables with many pots of poinsettias, brought out the season's festive mood of members socializing prior to a delicious meal of a variety of Chinese prepared foods.

After the meal, the quarterly meeting was held with the election of lodge offi cers for 1996 and the election of delegates to the upcoming state convention in 1996. By unanimous vote, the 1995 offi-

Dear Members and Friends, Let's hope all of you had a wonderful time celebrating the New Year, but most of all, hope that no serious accidents happened to you or to members of your family.

Now with the new year, let's hope it will be better than the one just passed.

The weather really did cooperate because it was just like summer at Christmas and also the New Year. But starting on January 2, 1996, the cold weather did arrive. Some snow also fell but it did not stay so no one had a chance to make a snowman.

Just so you remember, the lodge meeting will be January 14, 1996, so plan to attend. You may even see the new house that is being built for the caretaker at the rear of the lodge building.

The next dance will be the Wildwood Country Band playing mixed music on January 21 from 3 to 7 p.m.

133, San Antonio Reports on December Meeting Lodge

Lodge 133, San Antonio held their monthly meeting on Sunday, December 17 at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Activity Center, located at 1630 Goliad Road in San Antonio. A Christmas luncheon was served. Members enjoyed ham and an array of delicious side dishes and desserts. There were 33 members and seven guests present. Santa Claus popped in to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and had "goody bags" for the children.

Members celebrating anniversaries in December were Otto and James Hurta (56 years) and Richard and Kathy Uribe (15 years).

Lodge 139, Danbury Reports on Annual Christmas Dinner E.J.'s Restaurant was the scene of the Lodge 139, Danbury Annual Christmas Dinner. There was a festive atmosphere with the cloth-covered table and placemats with a Christmas motif. There were four lovely Christmas centerpieces placed at intervals along the long table. The centerpieces were made and donated by our secretary, Lorenda Baldwin. They were given as door prizes after the meal. The happy winners were Ella Marie Filipp, Helen Filipp, Monte Baldwin, and Ora Faye Wilson.

Prior to the dinner, the members met at the city hall for a short meeting. A period of silence was observed in memory of Harry R. Johnson of Angleton. He passed away on October 17, 1995.

At the conclusion of regular business, Lorenda Baldwin announced that she had delivered 28 of the turkeys which are given to Lodge 139 members who are 70 years of age or older each year in time for Christmas. She had 14 more to deliver that week.

The election of officers for 1996 was held. All officers were reelected by acclamation.

We are happy to report that our young Wesley Baldwin has not lost his skill and adroitness in handling animals. Again, he has taken first place in showmanship when he showed his pigs at the Baileys Prairie 4-H Show. He has won the showmanship competition in his age group and class each year since he started competing at the Brazoria County Fair in 1988 at the age of four.

November 12 Meeting The November 12 meeting, which this reporter was unable to attend as she was traveling in New Zealand and its subAntarctic islands the entire month, was held in the home of our secretary, Lorenda Baldwin. After routine business was concluded, the Christmas dinner was planned for December 13 to he held at E.J.'s. Helen Filip reported she and Lorenda had met with Helen Hegwood to learn about the Senior Life Insurance which is being introduced.

It was reported that Wesley Baldwin won five silver buckles at the Brazoria County Fair in October. He had the champion heifer, champion steer, and champion pig in each of those classes; the Grand Champion pig of the entire fair; and he took first place in Showmanship.

A social was held after the meeting.

October 5 Meeting On October 5, the lodge met at the Home Place Restaurant. A brief business meeting was held before partaking of the meal and enjoying the fellowship.

172, Pasadena Holds Christmas Party and Annual Meeting

The members of SPJST Lodge 172, Pasadena held their Christmas party and annual meeting on Wednesday,

December 13 at the lodge hall.

Brother John Valussek offered thanks for the Christmas dinner at 6 p.m. The meats and refreshments were furnished by the lodge and each family brought pastries and vegetables. The meats consisted of turkey and ham.

After the dinner, the meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by President Jerry Dressler.

The District Vice President Fred Buri recited the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence was offered for all the deceased members.

Roll call indicated all present except Historian Victor Peter who is still confined to the hospital.

Communications were received and acted on, which included some changes in the by-laws.

Committee persons and officers presented their reports and they were corrected and accepted.

Lodge 189, BryanCollege Station Reports on Annual Meeting and Party SPJST Lodge 189, Bryan-College Station held their annual December meeting and Christmas party on Sunday, December 12 at the Brazos Center in Bryan. Members enjoyed a great Christmas dinner served by Ma and Pa's Catering.

Canned goods were collected and donated to Still Creek Boys Ranch.

Claudia Pine recommended we give $100 to the Cheer Fund and a motion was made by Ernest Wentrcek and seconded

by Charles Munday to donate $100 to the SPJST Scholarship Fund. Also, it was decided to give the leftovers from the Christmas dinner to the College Station Fire Department. Other lodge members, including President Fred Blazek and the Novosad family, donated sweet potatoes and jars to the Still Creek Boys Ranch.

An award was given to Charles Munday for being the 1995 Top Sales Representative for Lodge 189.

The children of Lodge 189 had their own Christmas party held in the lobby of the Brazos Center. Gifts were exchanged and fruit and candy sacks along with door prizes were given away. All of this was coordinated by our fraternal activities coordinator, Claudia Pine.

The regular monthly meeting of Lodge 201, Bleiblerville-Nelsonville was called to order by the president, Mrs. Elaine Duron, on Sunday, December 10, 1995, at 2 p.m. All officers were in attendance.

Reports on December Meeting

Now that the holidays are over, we can get back to normal activities. Hope everyone enjoyed Christmas and that 1996 will be a good year for everyone.

The Circle met on December 14.

Present were 35 members and 15 visitors.

Our visitors were little Victoria Motley, Sheila Motley, Ann Tupy, Adell Cikanek, Kristian (great grandson of sister Bertha

Podhrasky), Jerry Kohn, Frank Laznovsky, Wesley Tupy, Bob Zvolanek, Anton Cikanek, Jerry Zmolek, Joe Vlk, Julius Podhrasky, Charles Kosarek and Milton Tupy.

We enjoyed a good lunch. The delicious chicken and ham was furnished by the Circle. The food that was brought by the members was superb with plenty of it.

After lunch, the Pledge of Allegiance was recited. We dispensed with the regular order of business. Stacie Hejny of the Sunshine Committee reported that she sent get-well cards to Sister Annie Vrana, Sister Bettie Marusak, Sister Rosie Bednar, Sister Vickie Kohn, Dick Harrison (husband of Sister Emilie Harrison), and Sister Mildred Trojacek, who received a card and a money gift.

Birthday cards were sent to November birthday celebrants, Sister Mary Kopecek and Sister Annie Jaska, and to December birthday celebrants, Sister Bettie Houdek, Sister Bettie Marusak and Sister Voyteska Janicek. Birthday cards and Christmas cards are sent only to sisters who cannot attend meetings. Stacie Hejny sent Christmas cards to each of the sisters who cannot attend the meetings. We miss the dear ladies. "Happy Birthday" was sung to the November and December birthday celebrants. Sister Vickie Kohn thanked the Circle and everyone for the get-well cards she received. Sister Mary Sebestik gave a donation to the Circle.

Congratulations to Sister Bessie Laznovsky who won the quilt. Christmas gifts were passed to everyone. It was fun to open the package to see what was in it.

Everyone has a little bit of a child in her or him when it comes to opening a gift!

Sister Mildred Trojacek has been transferred to the Baylor Rehabilitation Center in Dallas. We hope her recovery will be soon. We miss you, Mildred.

We were saddened when we heard of the death of our sister Julia Toupal Harris.

We extend our sympathy to Sister Mary Toupal Polasek and family (Julia was her sister), to the family and relatives of Willie Trojacek, and to the Louis Slovak family, his mother Libbie Slovak of Dallas, aunts, sisters Vojteska Janicek and Annie Mullins, and cousin Bertha Podhrasky.

Congratulations to Sister Mary Trojacek Kubacak who celebrated her 90th birthday on December 31. I wonder how many of us will make it to that age.

After the Circle's Christmas party;-several of us went to the Tupy farm house to celebrate several December birthdays.

There were 22 of us. Those who had a birthday were Wesley Tupy, Mary Kubacak, Bill Baker, Vickie Kohn, and Agnes Dujka. We had a lot of fun.

Our little visitor Victoria Motley, granddaughter of our secretary Linda and Victor Trojacek, is a member of five generations of relatives, the Marusak family and the Martinek family. How wonderful! I well remember when we picked cotton for her great-great-grandparents, Joe and Annie Martinek. I was very young, about 11 years old. I was not a very good cotton picker—probably did not pick much over 100 pounds a day.

Those were not the good old days.

Have you made any New Year's resolutions? I have made a few and hope to keep them. I read Ann Melvin's column in the Dallas News recently. She wrote that she has things under her beds. Don't we all? That is one of my resolutions— to get the "stuff and junk" out and keep it out.

We will not have a meeting in January.

Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club Reports on December Social The December meeting took place at Mr. Gatti's Pizza in Temple on December 16, 1995. We started out at Flag Hall at 3:30 p.m. and traveled to the Temple Lack's store where we had a Christmas tree to decorate with canned goods. After delivering the canned goods to our tree at Lack's, we went to eat pizza at Mr. Gatti's and have our December meeting.

During our meeting, we gave ourselves a "pat on the back" for winning first place in both the Temple and Rosebud Christmas parades. We also received second place for our tree at Lack's. Congratulations to all members who participated in both of these events.

After our meeting, we traveled back to Flag Hall for our December Youth Night.

Our next meeting is set for 2 p.m. an Sunday, January 14, 1996, at Flag Hall.

Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Leader Reports on Annual Christmas Social Lodge 30, Taiton and the Taiton Youth Club held their annual Christmas social on Sunday, December 10, 1995, at the Taiton Community Center. The day began with a covered dish dinner that was prepared by the club members. After lunch, the adult club held their monthly meeting. The new 1995-96 officers were installed by our District Director Matt Vanek.

The youth then held their monthly meeting. President Jeanine Dorotik called the meeting to order. Crystal Roye led us in the motto and pledge. Our special guests were Mr. and Mrs. Matt Vanek. All of the club members welcomed them.

Youth Leader Bubela went over old business: camp t-shirt drawings are due January 31, 1996, rounding up the 100 Pennies Drive, and any graduating seniors, it is time to apply for the scholarship applications.

Under new business, there will be a lock-in on March 9, 1996, and the LIT workshop will be May 31-June 2, 1996.

Some of the youth read Christmas poems and they all sang Christmas carols.

They also played bingo. We celebrated two birthdays for the month. They were Assistant Youth Leader Monica Staff and club members, T.J. Drapela and Trey Staff. Everyone sang "Happy Birthday" to them.

The craft contest was to make a Christmas centerpiece which we took to the El Campo Memorial Hospital for centerpieces in the cafeteria.

Our next meeting will be on January 7, 1996. The contest for next month is to draw a winterland picture.

The meeting was then adjourned.

After the meeting, the members exchanged gifts.

The afternoon ended with a surprise party for our assistant youth leader Monica Staff. The table was decorated with a pink table cloth and a birthday cake was the centerpiece. Punch was served with the cake. The club presented Mrs. Staff with a bath oil gift.

Everyone had a great time and enjoyed visiting with each other.

merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Happy Holidays, SPJST Readers!

Lodge 30, Taiton had our Christmas social on December 10, 1995. We played bingo and sang Christmas songs. We exchanged gifts with one another and had a great afternoon.

We made centerpieces for decorations for the tables. Then we took them to the El Campo Memorial Hospital and put them in the cafeteria.

We also had a birthday party for Mrs. Staff and sang her "Happy Birthday."

Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and has a Happy New Year.

Czech Christmas and New Year Traditions (From the book "Czech Reflections" by the McLennan - Hill Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society) Christmas Traditions During the Christmas Eve supper, money is put by each plate so that it will not be lacking during the year.

The shooting of a gun on Christmas Eve drives away bad luck.

Crumbs from the Christmas Eve supper are taken to the well, garden, trees and animals to make them produce during the year.

Children are told that if they fast on the day before Christmas Eve, they will be rewarded with a glimpse of the golden pig on Christmas Eve. On Christmas Eve, each girl peels an apple and keeps the peeling intact. Then, she throws it either over her shoulder or over the heads of a line of girls. The letter formed by the peel is the initial of the boy she will marry.

On Christmas Day or New Year's Day, each member of the family cracks

twelve nuts, each representing a month.

Each bad one indicates illness; thus, if a child finds his third one bad, he will be sick in March.
