Holiday Ornament Contest Brings Holiday Color to Home Office During the month of December, members are invited to visit the SPJST Museum to view the Youth Christmas Tree and see the wonderful and imaginative ornaments that our young people have created for this special tree. The museum is located on the ground floor of the SPJST Home Office Building at 520 North Main Street in Temple.

SPJST Home Office Employees, Officers, Directors and their families extend Seasons Greetings to all members on the back page of this week's Vestnik.

Society mourns loss of past District Director Frank W. Veselka Brother Frank W. Veselka, who served as SPJST District Seven Director from 1974 to 1977 died Monday, December 4, 1995 in a Corpus Christi hospital. He was 86.

A member of SPJST Lodge No. 79, Corpus Christi, the is Czech Heritage at Society, and a charter member of Corpus Christi Sokol, Brother Veselka was elected alternate director on June 22, 1972 at the XXIst SPJST Convention Frank W. Veselka

in Houston. He assumed the position of director of District Seven on May 1, 1974 and served as a member of the Supreme Lodge until January 1, 1977.

Attendees of the XXIV SPJST Convention in Corpus Christi in 1984 will recall that Brother Veselka was then President of Lodge 79, Corpus Christi and had the honor of welcoming the delegation to his city.

Brother Veselka is survived by his wife of 61 years, Carrie Veselka of Corpus Christi; one daughter, Elizabeth Ann (Fred) Curry of Corpus Christi; one son, Raymond (Judy) Veselka of Dallas; three brothers, E.O. Veselka of Houston,

Texas; Harry H. Veselka and Adolph J. Veselka, both of Yoakum; one sister, Thelma Dayton of LaWard, Texas; three grandchildren, Troy Smart of Austin, Cathy Gail Hensely of Aransas Pass and Debby B Barnes of Corpus Christi; four great-grandchildren, Jodi Hensely, Mark Turley, Shawn Barnes and Sarah Barnes; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Brother Veselka were Wednesday, December 6, in the Maxwell P. Dunne Chapel. Some of those participating in the funeral ceremony included: Alvin Prochaska of the Czech Heritage Society in Corpus Christi; Larry Laznovsky, President of

the Southern District of Sokol, who acknowledged Brother Veselka's dedication to Sokol; Raymond Veselka, son, who delivered a heartfelt eulogy praising his father's life; and Leonard Mikeska, SPJST Supreme Lodge Vice President, who addressed Brother Veselka's SPJST involvement.

"Brother Veselka will be remembered as a good leader and as a fraternalist who was always loyal and fair," said Brother Mikeska. "The SPJST was enriched by his services to the Society."

The family requests that memorials be sent to the SPJST Scholarship Fund.

Of Angels and Scholarships ...

We went Christmas shopping one

night last week. Along the way, I stepped into a bookstore to browse for gifts. Inside the store, I was surprised to find an entire book and card display devoted to the topic of "Angels."

According to the store clerk, angels are really popular this year. I thumbed through one of the books. It featured several stories by people describing angelic visions or visitations that they had experienced. Some occurred during near-death experiences; others took place under the most ordinary of circumstances.

Whether or not you believe in angels is a personal matter.

Like fraternalism, it requires that you make a leap of faith-to believe in something that may not be readily visible or touched. It's kind of like that with the SPJST Scholarship Fund.

While I'm not a past SPJST Scholarship recipient, I can assure you, every scholarship dollar that I did receive was appreciated and well spent. The same, I am sure, applies to the young people who have received SPJST Scholarships. Many of these young people have been profiled in the Vestnik in recent weeks. More will be appearing in next week's issue. In each case, there is a common theme to their stories: they are now productive citizens - and very much appreciative of the monetary gifts that so many of you made years ago.

The SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive continues through December 31.

To those of you who have already taken the leap, thank you. To everyone else, thank you for your consideration.

Young people, parents, and grandparents, please note that this is also the time to apply for 1996 SPJST Scholarships.

Some of the money earned from this project enables the young people to make fun trips or other excursions, and some of it goes into the children's savings accounts. Although the children are free to spend the rest of their money as they wish, they are also encouraged to donate some of their earnings to a charity of their choice, so they may learn the joy of giving to those less fortunate than themselves.

The children obtain the materials to make these cards through donations of used cards. The children.also recycle alloccasion cards in addition to Christmas cards, and the project goes on year-round.

For more than twenty years, the abandoned, abused and troubled children of St. Jude's Ranch in Boulder City, Nevada have been earning extra money by recycling old greeting cards into new ones.

SPJST 100th Anniversary There will be a special one day meeting of the SPJST Supreme Lodge on December 20, 1995 at the SPJST Home Office to establish an outline for the SPJST's 100th Anniversary celebration in 1997.

"We hope to get some things firmly down on paper," says Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar. "Any members with ideas are encouraged and welcome to contribute their suggestions.

"Our 100th Anniversary celebration will be an important milestone in the growth and development of our Society.

We owe it to each other to make it all that it can be and welcome the input of the membership on this exciting project."

Deer Hunters: Here's Something for You!

Lower Interest Rates Present Opportunities for Real Estate and Home Financing

The SPJST will again sponsor its annual Deer Antler Contest. Only SPJST members are eligible to participate in this contest. Two $50 prizes will be awarded.

One prize will he presented to the hunter whose deer has the widest horn spread (measured from the outside to outside of horns).

The other prize will go to the deer with the most points (must he able to hang a ring on it to be qualified as a point).

To enter the contest, hunters must submit a photograph of the deer along with the contest entry form appearing on page three of the Vestnik. The form must he completed and signed by a game warden,

highway patrolman, sheriff or public official.

This contest applies only to Texas white tail deer.

Your entry must he postmarked before January 31, 1996, to qualify.

The general white tail season began on November 4 and will run through January 1. The South Texas season will run a week later, starting on November 11 and running through January 7.

As always, take care to observe safety rules when hunting. Best wishes to all hunters for a successful season.

SPJST interest rates just went down.

The new rates are posted on page three of this week's Vestnik. This may be good news if you are planning to purchase real estate, build a new home or buy a previously-owned house.

Home and farm mortgages are two of the most unheralded benefits offered by the SPJST to its members. The basic philosophy underlying the mortgage lending program offered through the SPJST is that through joint effort and mutual self-interest, individuals and families may collectively achieve objectives unattainable by acting alone. Approved by SPJST convention delegates more than 70 years ago, the SPJST's Mortgage Lending Department recorded more than $28 million in total loans outstanding through the end of November, 1995.

The Secretary-Treasurer's Department works diligently to meet the needs of its member borrowers. In order to he considered for a mortgage loan with the SPJST, you or your spouse must be a member of the SPJST. Underwriting guidelines stipulate that the SPJST may lend up to 75 percent of the purchase price or appraised value, whichever is less, on "first-class residential real estate." For example, if the land and dwelling are appraised at $100,000, the maxiMUM amount that can be financed is $75,000. Likewise, each immediate family is subject to a maximum financing liMitation of $100,000.

From the Supreme Lodge The Minutes of the November 7 and 8, 1995 Regular Meeting of the Supreme Lodge SPJST Held at the Home Office in Temple, Texas The regular meeting of the Supreme Lodge SPJST was called to order by Chairman of the Board Pokladnik at 8:30 a.m. with all members of the Supreme Lodge present.

MINUTES - Consideration was given to the minutes of the regular meeting held September 12 and 13, 1995. The minutes were considered page by page. Director Bayer moved to accept the minutes, seconded by Director Hanus. Motion carried unanimously.

Copies of the officers' reports are placed in Volume 17 of the exhibits.

President Leshikar reported representatives from Excel Communications had requested time to speak to the Board during the afternoon of November 7. Vice PreSident Mikeska moved to allow the representatives from Excel Communications fifteen minutes for their presentation. Seconded by President Leshikar. Motion carried unanimously.

President Leshikar complimented Vice President Mikeska on the good job he did at the Texas Fraternal Congress and complimented the youth for their acts. There was a lengthy discussion as to the number of the youth attending the Texas Fraternal Congress and the cost. Director Broz moved to allow only four youth acts from the SPJST in the future. Seconded by Director Bayer. Voting against was President Leshikar. Motion carried.

EMPLOYEES - There was a lengthy discussion about Christmas gifts for the • employees. Director Vavra moved to postpone action on Christmas gifts and salaries to November 8, 1995. Seconded by Director Vanek. Motion Carried unanimously.

Recess was taken from 9:50 a.m. until 10:00 a.m..

YOUTH DEPARTMENT - State Youth Director Lange's report was discussed. It was explained the number of participants at camp had increased a small amount.

YOUTH CLUB OFFICERS' WORKSHOP - The Youth Club Officers' Workshop was well attended this year with 85 in attendance. The next workshop will be held August 24, 1996, at the Home Office. It was agreed that at the next workshop the rules and regulations concerning conducting an SPJST meeting should be stressed.

YOUTH RULE BOOK - The proposed changes by the District Youth. Counselors to the youth rule hook was reviewed. Director Bayer moved, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas to leave rules on page 32 number 3 and page 36 number 4 as they are in the current youth rule book without any changes. Vice President Mikeska moved to approve the District Youth Counselors changes to the rule book with the recommended changes by the Board. Seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas. Motion carried unanimously.

MR. AND MISS SPJST - The 1996 rules for the Mr. and Miss SPJST contest were reviewed. Financial Secretary Mikulas moved to approve the Mr. and Miss SPJST contest but for the district winners to receive $50.00 and each participant to receive $25.00. Seconded by Vice President Mikeska. Motion carried unanimously.

Vice President Mikeska moved, seconded by Director Broz, to present the winners of the Mr. and Miss SPJST contest at the Tuesday night Banquet of the SPJST Convention. Motion carried unanimously. Vice President Mikeska moved, seconded

by Director Kohutek, to add "My vision for SPJST for the Future" as one of the speech topics.

Recess was taken from 12:15 p.m. to 1:25 p.m..

Editor Vanicek was welcomed to the meeting.

FRATERNAL ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR - State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Klinkovsky's report was reviewed. There are still some funds available for Czech classes at the local lodges.

EDITOR - Editor Vanicek's report was reviewed.

He expressed his appreciation to the Board for being allowed to attend the National Fraternal Congress Association meeting in Washington, D.C. and the Texas Fraternal

Congress in Austin. Editor Vanicek asked for clarification as to whose names appear on the back page of the Vestnik as a Christmas card to members. Legal Advisor Kacir moved that only the Board members who made a donation to the scholarship fund could be listed with each Board member donating $20.00 or more and any amount from the employees who want their name listed. Seconded by Director Broz. Motion carried unanimously.

Representatives from Excel Telecommunications were welcomed to the Board at 2:25 p.m. to make a presentation concerning long distance telephone service.

Recess was taken from 3:00 p.m. to 3:15 p.m..

SPJST 100TH ANNIVERSARY - President Leshikar reported on the bands he had contacted and those that had responded.

President Leshikar made a motion to contact Anton Vrazel, Jerry Wayne Haisler, and Texas Dutchmen Harry Czarnek to confirm they will perform for the 100th Anniversary. The price the bands charge are as follows: Anton Vrazel - $750.00, Jerry Wayne Haisler - $550.00, and Texas Dutchman $675.00. Seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir. Motion carried unanimously.

Legal Advisor Kacir moved for the officers to meet and come up with an outline for the SPJST 100TH Anniversary with the activities to conclude on Sunday afternoon.

Motion died from lack of a second. Director Pokladnik moved to set a special meeting for one day to discuss the SPJST 100TH Anniversary. Seconded by Director Vavra.

Motion carried unanimously.

LAM - President Leshikar reported there had been a total of 546 visitors during the last three months. These visitors include individuals from six foreign countries.

INSURANCE PRODUCTS - Vice President Mikeska reported the new Senior Life and Senior Life Graded Benefit Product will he marketed about the middle of November. The marketing strategy is to mail computer generated proposals on a lodge by lodge basis to the members who are age 50 to 80 years of age.

Unearned premiums from sales are up by $224,109.58 for a total of 281 more certificates during the first nine months of 1995.

STATE FIELD MANAGER - The report of State Field Manager McBride was reviewed. It was pointed out that there were eleven new sales representatives trained during the past quarter. Vice President Mikeska complimented State Field Manager McBride on the good work he had done and reported it was a pleasure to work with State Field Manager McBride.

MEMBERSHIP DRIVE - The membership drive ended October 31. There were 135 new applications received, processed and approved during the drive. The drawing for the prizes will he held December 15.

MOD TERM - Vice President Mikeska reported on a letter from Actuary John Agee concerning the Mod Term Insurance plan. Of the Mod Term policies issued 90% are non-smokers and there are 18 applications being approved each month. Director Broz moved to accept and approve and proceed with the marketing of Mod Term based on Actuary Agee's study. Seconded by Director Bayer. Motion passed unanimously.

INSURANCE COMMITTEE - Vice President Mikeska reported the Insurance Committee would be meeting November 11, 1995, at 9:00 a.m.

I EXAS FRATERNAL CONGRESS - Vice President Mikeska expressed his appreciation to the Board members who attended the Texas Fraternal Congress to show their support and to his staff for all the help they provided him. Legal Advisor Kacir made a motion to express the appreciation of the Board for all the work Vice President Mikeska did at the Texas Fraternal Congress level and to approve the expenditures.

Seconded by Secretary-Treasurer Anglin. Carried unanimously.

Vice President Mikeska reported on the-following items which are in process: Proposal software being studied SPJST payroll deduction program SPJST brochure still pending New development position guidelines being prepared.

The Board went into executive session to discuss a personnel matter.

Recess was taken from 8:45 p.m. to 8:30 a.m.

Minutes of the executive session of September 12 and 13, 1995, were read. Financial Secretary Mikulas made a motion to approve the minutes seconded by Director Kohutek. Motion carried unanimously.

Minutes of the executive session of October 20, 1995, were read. Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved to accept the minutes, seconded by Director Hanus. Motion carried unanimously.

Vice President Mikeska moved for the President's Department to come up with rules of conduct and definition of the parties the rules applies to, recommended punishment and the method of dissemination of the rules concerning conduct for supervisors at Youth Camp and LIT and return the recommendation by the special Board meeting.

Motion seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir and carried unanimously.

LODGE COMPLIANCE - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported Lodges 114, 149,

Wednesday, December 13, 1995-VESTNIK/5 162, and 167 have not returned the Local Lodge Officer rosters for the 1995 officers.

Requests for the 1996 local lodge officers were mailed on November 1, 1995.

There has been no response concerning 990 and 990-T from the following lodges: 6, 8, 29, 30, 38, 51, 106, 114, 135, 148, 149, 154, 157, 162, 167, 177, 179, 181, 184, 188.

Lodge 177 has an extension.

100TH ANNIVERSARY - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported she had been approached by a member about the possibility of having a 100th Anniversary cook hook. By common consent, it was decided to postpone action on this until the special meeting.

DIRECT BILL - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported only twelve lodges remain on group bill. Those remaining on group bill are: 6, 9, 16, 20, 41, 82, 101, 110, 154, 157, 162, and 174.

LOCAL LODGE INCENTIVE PROGRAM - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported there are seven lodges that have met the gold award, two the silver award, eight the bronze award, eight the honorable mention, and seventeen the first step award.

ANNUITIES - There are 1,723 certificates in Annuity I for a total value of $25,792,791.89 and 739 certificates in Annuity II for a total value of 13,446,870.31.

INVESTMENTS - Director Vanek moved, seconded by Director Hanus to approve the investments for the months of July, August, and September. Motion carried unanimously.

SCO1 I AND WHITE PRESCRIPTION SERVICES - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported there have been over 500 telephone inquiries concerning the prescription services. Scott and White reported the prescriptions that have been ordered are by members in six different counties.

SPJST LODGE 184 - A letter had been received from the Lavaca County'Central Appraisal District reporting Lodge 184 had delinquent taxes for three years. Director Vanek reported on his visit with a Lodge 184 officer.

Director Bayer moved to accept Secretary-Treasurer Anglin's report. Seconded by Director Vanek. Motion carried unanimously.

Recess was taken from 3:15 p.m. to 3:30 p.m..

Financial Secretary Mikulas reported his department had mailed each lodge the number of delegates they were entitled to have at the upcoming SPJST Convention. Some lodges have already had their elections and returned the completed credentials.

FINANCIAL STATEMENT - Financial Secretary Mikulas went over the financial statement for the nine months ending September 30, 1995. He compared the figures of September 30, 1994, and September 30, 1995. The total income has decreased over this period due primarily to annuity rollovers thai occurred in 1994.

PENDING LOANS - Legal Advisor Kacir reported on the real estate loans that are pending and what is needed for each loan to close. There is a total of $1,052,886.75 loans in this category.

BUDGET - Financial Secretary Mikulas presented a listing of all the income and expenses for 1995. Income is at 67% of the budget, amount and expenses are at 79% of the budget amount.

LITIGATION AND PENDING LITIGATION - Legal Advisor Kacir reported on six loans that have tax suits or litigation. There is one other matter in litigation. There are four loans in process of foreclosure.

DISCOUNTS - According to Article 33-14, the Board is to determine the amount of discounts on class "A"and "B" certificates for 1996. Previous discounts allowed a 25% reduction of premiums in class "A" and "B" whose certificates were in force 35 years or more and who have attained age of 70 years and an additional 25% reduction when they attain the age 75 years. Chairman Pokladnik turned the chair over to Vice Chairman Vanek. Director Pokladnik moved fOr the discounts on certificates "A" and "B" to be the same as in the past years. Legal Advisor Kacir seconded. Motion carried unanimously. Director Pokladnik took hack the chair.

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin recommended the interest rate of Annuity I remain at 5.75%, Annuity II and immediate Annuity remain at 6.5% through March 31, 1996.

Seconded by Director Broz. MOtion carried unanimously.

EMPLOYEES - The officers and directors approved a Christmas gift for the employees.

Board went into executive session to discuss salaries for employees.

Recess from 12:15 p.m. to 12:45 p.m..

BUDGET - President Leshikar expressed a concern that there was not a budget by categories. President Leshikar moved for the officers to discuss the budget. Motion seconded by Vice President Mikeska. Motion carried unanimously.

President Leshikar reported on his and Director Pokladnik's visit with the officers of the Kaufman lodge and also that Lodge 95 - Seymour has shown an interest in merging or reorganizing.

SPJST CONVENTION - A discussion concerning possibilities for a speaker for the Lodge Incentive Banquet and the Convention- Banquet. Legal Advisor Kacir moved, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas, to engage Susie Humphries, a radio broadcaster in the Fort Worth/ Dallas area, to be the guest speaker at the SPJST Convention banquet at a cost of approximately $1,500.00. Motion passed unanimously.

UNIVERSAL LIFE - Vice President Mikeska reported on sales classes centered around the Universal Life product to help the sales representatives understand the product. Director Vavra made a motion to authorize a copy of each Universal Life statement to the sales representatives and the member. Seconded by Director Broz.

Motion carried unanimously.

SALES INCENTIVE PROGRAM - Vice President Mikeska presented a sales incentive program for the district field representative. A cash award when the field representative completed assigning the orphan members between the ages of 50 to 80.

A cash award when they secure four new producing sales representatives in 1996.

Motion by Financial Secretary Mikulas to accept the sales incentive program, seconded by Director Hanus. Motion carried unanimously.

Vice President Mikeska requested approval of the "Stairway to the Stars of Success," sales representative program and the approval to change prizes if the items are in the same price range. Motion by Director Bayer, seconded Director Vanek to approve "Stairway to the Stars of Success." Motion carried unanimously.

There was a lengthy discussion about an incentive program for lodge officers.

DELINQUENCIES - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported on 18 loans that are delinquent over three months. Of these loans, six are on a work out plan, sixteen are in bankruptcy/suit, three are set for foreclosure, and two have deferrals. Director Kohutek moved to accept the recommendations for the delinquent loans. Seconded by Director Broz. Motion passed unanimously.

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin recommended a loss reserve of $22,000.00 he set for the delinquent loans. Financial Secretary Mikulas moved to accept the recommendation for the loss reserve. Seconded by Director Hanus. Motion carried unanimously.

INTEREST SENSITIVE PRODUCTS - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin recommended the interest rate of Universal Life remain at 7.15% through March 31, 1996. Seconded

REFUND TO LODGES - Financial Secretary Mikulas reminded the Board the refund formula for 1994 was $1.00 per paid up certificate and $8.50 per premium paying certificate, less Annuities. If this formula is passed for 1995 the total refund will amount to approximately $173,000.00. The final determination of the formula will take place in the January meeting.

ANNUITIES - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported several members had contacted him concerning the $100,000 cap on Annuities. Most of our annuity holders that have set up an IRA account are nearing the limit of $100,000. Financial Secretary Mikulas moved to set the total cap in IRA and Non-IRA annuity II to be $150,000.00 and the prior cap on Annuity I not being changed, effective immediately. Seconded by Director Bayer. Motion carried unanimously.

BANKS - One of the banks used by SPJST will no longer return canceled checks.

Instead they will provide exact photographic images that can be stored in a three ring hinder. Financial Secretary Mikulas moved to approve the check imaging. Seconded

by Director Broz. Motion carried unanimously.

EXCEL COMMUNICATIONS - A discussion on the presentation of the Excel Communications was held. It was decided to investigate the company and have them review the SPJST's long distance service to see if there would be a savings.

DISTRICT I - Director Vavra reported on attending functions at Lodge 38, and Lodge 201. He presented an age 96 endowment in Bryan. There were five generations present at the presentation. Director Vavra requested the officers' reports be mailed at least one week before the Supreme Lodge meeting.

DISTRICT II - Director Kohutek reported that it is taking too long for some of the borrowers to do the repairs after they have received a damage claim check. He recommended in the future to release half of the damage claim and keep the other half in escrow until work is completed. Agreed by common consent.

DISTRICT IV - Director Broz invited everyone to the annual meeting on December 10 at Wall. He complimented Vice President Mikeska's work with the Texas Fraternal Congress. He reported that he has received several complaints because of closing cost on small loans.

DISTRICT V - Director Hanus reported on different functions he had attended since the last meeting.

DISTRICT VI - Director Vanek expressed his appreciation for being allowed to attend the NFCA. He gave a report on the sessions that he attended at the NFCA. He expressed his appreciation to Vice President Mikeska for taking the time and effort needed to be the President of the Texas Fraternal Congress. Director Vanek thanked FAC Klinkovsky for attending the Fraternal Fest at Moravia.

DISTRICT VII - Director Bayer congratulated Vice President Mikeska on his participation at the Texas Fraternal Congress and Gene McBride on being selected FTC of the year. He had a request from some members wanting the crochet/knitting separate from the sewing cat-

DISTRICT III - Chairman Pokladnik thanked Legal Advisor Kacir for attending the District III fall meeting. He complimented the officers on their reports. He reported on his and President Leshikar's meetings with the convention center director. He stated he thought Vice President Mikeska did a terrific job at the Texas Fraternal Congress. He thanked the Board for allowing him to attend the NFCA. There will he a special Board meeting December 20, 1995, at 8:30 a.m. with Actuary John Agee attending. The next regular Board meeting was scheduled for January 16, 17, and 18 at 8:30 a.m. The March Board meeting was scheduled to begin March 5 at 8:30 a.m.

There being no further business Chairman Pokladnik adjourned the meeting at 5:25 p.m. on motion by Director Bayer seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas. Motion carried unanimously.

Lodge 1, Fayetteville Christmas Party Set for December 17 SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville and the Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce will have their joint Christmas party on Sunday, December 17 at 5 p.m. at the SPJST Hall in Fayetteville for the SPJST members and all who participated in the annual Lickskillet Celebration. Lodge 32, Victoria Plans Christmas Dinner Wednesday, December 13 Please join us for our annual Christmas dinner to be held on our regular meeting night on Wednesday, December 13. We will gather at Backstreet Restaurant, located at 1001 Manor (off of Airline between Central Church of Christ and The Movie Schoppe) at 6 p.m. for a social.

We will place our food orders at 6:30 p.m. from the following selections: chicken fried steak, grilled chicken breast or catfish. All are served with a salad, baked potato, coffee, tea, roll and cobbler. Each meal will be $7.25. Each member that attended at least five meetings in 1995 and their spouse will be treated by the lodge.

Chances were sold on a quilt and other items. The youth club formed a kitchen band to play Christmas songs. Everyone was invited to bring their pots and pans and spoons to join in the fun.

A total of 56 tarok players came to Lodge 20, Granger on December 2 to play in the tournament. Dan Gaida was the tarok chairman and Franklin Schlesinger brought his computer to make the scorekeeping easier. SPJST State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Ffank Klinkovsky and his wife, Irma, kept the game running smoothly. After six one-hour rounds, the top four finishers were, from left: First Place - Mike Zrubek of Granger; Second Place Joe Vyvjala of Schulenburg; Third Place - Alton Demel of Schulenburg; and Fourth Place - Jeff Kubes of Fort Worth. Mr. and Mrs. Albin Machu Celebrate 60 Years of Marriage Mr. and Mrs. Albin Machu were honored on their 60th wedding anniversary on Sunday, November 19, 1995.

The couple was united in marriage on November 19, 1935, by the late Rev. Joseph Barton, Sr. in the Granger Brethren Church.

Mr. and Mrs. Machu and their children and grandchildren are SPJST members.

There was a good mix of ages participating in tnis year's tournament, including about ten players under the age of 30 and 46 players ranging from 30 to 90 years of age. The young lady on the left is Marty Stockton, 18, and her partner, Joe Coufal, 90. On the other side of the table are John Vrana and John Curtin.

Joe Coufal, 90, and his sister Dorothy (Coufal) Hampton, 86, both played in the tournament.

Joe says that he really enjoys the game and would like to see this part of his heritage continue. And he's doing his part, having taught the game to all of his children and most of his grandchildren.

Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Albin Machu who celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on November 19. The couple was honored with a reception hosted by their children.

Lodge 79, Corpus Christi Member Marsha McDougal Reviews Nursing in the Czech Republic Marsha McDougal was one of three Zeta Alpha members who recently undertook a trip to Prague and the outlying villages of Strani and Veleharad in the Czech Republic to review nursing and health care. Marsha is a mem ber of Lodge 79, Corpus Christi. This project in clinical scholarship and research permitted them to return to the states with a truly holistic view of patient care. They were able to identify significant nursing potential in the area of research regarding patient education.

Prague depicts the rich Czech heritage that is reflected in its baroque building architecture. Health care attitudes have not kept pace with the magnificence of the physical appearance of the city. Some significant issues identified by these members were related to health hazards posed by limited access to running water, consumption of diets high in cholesterol and fat, significant use of tobacco by all age individuals and high environmental pollution caused by leaded gasoline in transporta-

81, Needville Reports on November Meeting

On a very wet Sunday, November 19, there were 61 members and guests that attended the monthly SPJST meeting of Lodge 81 in Needville. As usual, festivities began at 12 noon with the meal being served. Being November, turkey and dressing was the main entree. Thanks go out to Winnie and Edwin Susan and to Elsie Brdecka for donating the turkeys.

Next, thanks to Winnie and Elsie for baking the turkeys and to Mary and Victor Werner for donating and baking the dressing. To all of the other families who brought food, a big thanks to each of you.

There was never so much food as there was this time. Everything was delicious and is deeply appreciated. President Macha led us in grace before the meal.

We are so lucky to live in America where food is so plentiful. We just don't appreciate it enough sometimes.

At 1:05 p.m., the meeting was called to order by President Macha. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Miranda Wiles.

All officers were present for roll call.

Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes of the previous meeting. They were approved as read. Willie Mae Kuykendall, our treasurer, read her monthly financial report. It was accepted as read. Gilbert Walzel, our special fund chairman began with reading the events scheduled for the hall. His financial report was then given and accepted as presented. Brother Walzel read a thank-

tion vehicles. They found a richness, however, in the societies sense of family and religion. They left Prague with a deeper sense of the need for nurses to look beyond the apparent and get involved in society at large.

Scholarship and research is not just a United States issue, it is also a world issue. Clinical scholarship is the responsibility of every nurse.

Marsha was also one of three Sigma Theta Tau International members chosen to present a paper at the group's international convention in Detroit, Michigan, recently.

Their presentation was entitled "Creative Teaching and Learning in Clinical Practice—Clinical Nursing in the Czech Republic."

Marsha is a registered nurse who studied at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic, last year for two months. She is the daughter of Jerry and Mildred Elzer of Corpus Christi.

you note from Rev. James Ramsey of St. Michael's Church in Needville. In the note, he expressed his appreciation in behalf of the church to Lodge 81 for allowing the people to use the parking area at the hall. The event being held was St. Michael's Church bazaar.

We lost one member since the last meeting. She is Mrs. Emma Foytik. In memory of our departed sister, a moment of silence was observed. God bless her and may the perpetual light shine upon her. Sympathy is extended to the family.

Also, Lodge 81 would like to send their condolences to Jerry and Delores Prochaska upon the recent untimely death of Jerry's brother. Jerry is our former District Five Director. Our prayers go out to you and the family.

On the sick list are Leroy Bosak, Jerry Blinka and Julius and Mary Matula. We hope for a better tomorrow for each of you. It was good to see Louise Newman at the meeting since she recently had surgery done to her other eye.

There were seven guests who attended our November meeting. They were E.A. Pilat, Edward, Margaret, and Connie Matejka, Larry Foytik, Joyce Crum, and Louis Hanus. Margaret Matejka is the daughter of Viola Jezek, Edward is Viola's son-in-law, and Connie is Viola's granddaughter. Joyce Crum is the daughter of Vlasta Nowotny. Joyce resides in the state of Florida. Larry Foytik is the grandson of Calvin and Mary Ann Foytik. Mr. Pilat is the brother of A.G. Pilat. Of course, everyone knows who Mr. Hanus is. It was nice to have each of you present at the meeting. Come again.

Woodrow and Adeline Bacica, our transfer members from the former Guy lodge were in attendance at the meeting.

Louis Hanus, our District Five Director, spoke to us briefly on several different subjects. He told us about the dormant lodges in District Five. Seventyfive delegates will represent this district at the convention. Thanks for coming, Mr. Hanus. We will see you in December to install our officers for the new year.

In other news, Brother Gilbert Walzel reported that he had received two bids for the roof work and two more bids are due to come in. There was nothing new to report about the air conditioners. To add a little laughter to the meeting, President Macha read a few jokes. Also, it was voted upon that the lodge will donate $100 to the 1995-96 graduating class of Needville High School for Project Graduation.

The time came to elect officers for 1996. The same people will fill the roster. They were voted in by acclamation.

Returning to office are President Adolph Macha, Vice President Vincent Newman, Secretary Mary Werner, Treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendall, and Special Fund Chairman Gilbert Walzel. Thanks for a job well done and also thanks for accepting the positions again. All of the other committee members will remain the same. Yours truly has accepted her position as reporter for another year. I have tried my best to make my article interesting. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

The next subject on the agenda was the election of delegates to the SPJST Convention in Arlington, Texas in June, 1996. Those going to represent District Five are Gilbert and Benita Walzel,

Adolph and Delores Macha, Edwin and Winnie Susan, Elsie Brdecka, and Willie Mae Kuykendall. For any reason that the above mentioned aren't able to go, the following substitutes are eligible. They are Mary Werner, Alvin and Darlene Blinka, and Jerry and Frances Kubala.

Thanks to all who accepted these responsibilities.

Discussion now centered about our December meeting. It was decided that Santa Claus would definitely have to make an appearance. Jeanette and Vincent Newman are in charge of notifying Santa that he is to be at the Needville SPJST Hall on Sunday, December 17.

Santa will probably make his appearance shortly after the meeting. Delores and Adolph Macha will decorate the Christmas tree. Bags of fruit and goodies will be distributed. Extra monetary prizes will be given. It was decided that from 2 to 3 p.m., we would play bingo for the door prizes that will be donated by the members. Feel free to bring extra prizes so everyone can have a chance to bingo—maybe Santa will play bingo with us. This all sounds like we are going to have a good time. Kids, be prepared to sing Christmas carols and talk to Santa. If anyone can play some musical instrument, feel free to bring it.

It was decided that Lodge 81 will again give fruit to the residents of the S.P.J.S.T. Nursing Home. President Macha will take care of this. Willie Mae Kuykendall will send Christmas cards to the shut-ins.

We again will have the jar on the table so that everyone can drop their pennies in for the scholarship fund. The money will then be sent to the Home Office in Temple. It will be designated as a donation from Lodge 81. The drive ends on December 31, 1995. This is for a worthy cause.

The weather has been beautiful in this area. The farmers are resting since they are caught up with the field work. Pecans are the hot item now. Everyone seems to he busy cracking and shelling them.

Lodge 84, Dallas Announces December Activities Thanksgiving, the beginning of the holiday season, has now come and gone.

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving dinner with turkey, dressing and all the trimmings. Most of all, having the privilege of sharing this time with family and friends. I love Thanksgiving—one of my favorite times.

Now for Christmas shopping, etc.

Our lodge has a dance on DECEMBER 16. Music will he by the COUNTRY BOYS. Come on out and join us for a fun evening.

Our CHRISTMAS PARTY will be SUNDAY, DECEMBER 17 at 4 p.m.

Members are asked to bring a side dish and dessert. The lodge will furnish the meat, cheese, etc. Come join us for a jolly old time. . . a time to visit with old friends and make new ones. Social hour will he from 4 to 5 p.m.

We always gather canned goods at this time to help the people that are not as fortunate as we are. So please bring canned goods to help these needy people to have food for the holidays.

After the feast, the youth group will present a program. They have been practieing diligently—so we know they will be great! We always enjoy their performing for us.

What would a Christmas party be without our special visitor from the North Pole? You guessed it—Santa Claus! So come on out and bring the kids—from the cradle to the rocker. Let's make this our best Christmas yet!

Lodge 133, San Antonio Reports on November Meeting Lodge 133, San Antonio held their monthly meeting on Sunday, November 19 at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Activity Center, located at 1630 Goliad Road in San Antonio. A Thanksgiving luncheon was served. Members enjoyed turkey, dressing, and an array of delicious side dishes and desserts.

Members celebrating anniversaries in November were Jim and Shirley Burrows (15 years); Bill and Gertrude Pavliska (52 years); Joe and Annie Stryk (48 years); Herman and Julie Kurtz (65 years); and Charlie and Viola Kurtz (10 years). Sick members include Frank Fajkus and Anthony Trilicek who is recovering from surgery. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.

Lodge 196, Houston Northwest Reports on November Meeting Regular business meeting was called to order by President Robert Castillo at 7:30 p.m. All officers were present as was a good number of members and visitors. Lodge 185, New Braunfels Member Derek Koehler Receives Eagle Scout Award Derek Dennison Koehler, 14-yearold son of Dennis and Diana Koehler of New Braunfels, received his Eagle Scout Award at his Eagle Court of tionor on Sunday, October 29, 1995, at the Elk's Lodge in New Braunfels.

Derek and his parents are members of Lodge 185, New Braunfels. The coveted Eagle Scout Award is the highest award earned by a scout in the Bov Scouts of America. Derek is an active member of Troop 163 which is sponsored b y the Knights of Columbus of New Braunfels.

The Eagle Award requires a total of 21 merit badges including 12 merit badges from a list required for Eagle badges. Derek has earned a total of 44 merit badges including 14 from the list of required badges. Derek's Eagle service project included planning, building and installing eight park benches in Landa Park in New Braunfels. Derek completed all requirements and was approved for the Eagle Award by the Alamo Area Council Sioux District Eagle Board of Review on June 7.

Derek joined Cub Scouts as a Tiger Cub in September, 1987. While a member of Pack 381, Derek was a Bobcat, Wolf, Bear and Wehelo Scout.

He earned his Arrow of Light on December 3, 1991, and graduated into Troop 381 on January 7, 1992. Later in 1992, Derek transferred to Troop 163.

He served in leadership positions as Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader, Scribe, Librarian, Quartermaster, and Den Chief. He has earned his Firem'n Chit, Totin' Chit, Den Chief Service Award, BSA Mile Swim, BSA

Snorkeling, 50Miler Award, and San Antonio Missions Historical Trail Award. Derek was elected to the Order-of-theArrow and completed his ordeal Derek Koehler in June, 1994, and sealed his Brotherhood membership in April, 1995. He attended Troop Junior Leader Training in February. 1993. and Alamo Area Council Cedar Badge Leadership Training Camp in June, 1994. He also served as a counselor in training at Bear Creek Summer Camp in 1994 and 1995. Derek attended the 1993 National Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia and participated in a Philmont Scout Ranch Expedition in1995.

Derek is a freshman at Canyon High School in New Braunfels, Texas. He plays trumpet in the CHS Cougar Band and is a member of the Student Council. While a student at Canyon Middle School, he was a member of the varsity hand and a member of the 199394 and 1994-95 Hill Country Honor Bands. He made a Superior Rating on a solo for three years and was selected Outstanding Band Member in 1995.

He was also on the Honor Roll and a member of the National Junior Honor Societ y . He received the President's Award for Educational Excellence for Outstanding Academic Achievement and the President's Physical Fitness Award in 1995.

Derek is a member of the Sons of Hermann and participated in summer camp activities for five years. He is atso a member of the SPJST Hill Country Lodge 185 Youth Club and has served as flag hearer and treasurer. He won first place in the State SPJST Youth Achievement Day competition in 1993 and third places in 1988, 1994, kind 1995. Derek is also a member of the New Braunfels Village Brass Band which plays authentic German music.

Girl Scout Troop Group 430 were gracious enough to take time and come visit S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1 residents on Monday, October 30. They were dressed in their "trick-or-treat" costumes and provided a style show which was enjoyed by all. Thank you, girls and leader Pam Harper.

Halloween was celebrated with a special costume and decorated wheelchair

party. Some of the staff and residents dressed up to fit the occasion. Mr. Woody Richards, Administrator, introduced the costume contestants as they modeled their outfits and wheelchairs in the dining room.

Mrs. Pauline Kovar would like to thank the staff for doing a wonderful job dressing the contestants and a lot of other residents who added a Halloween touch to their attire.

The party began at 2:30 p.m. on October 31. Resident contestants were Bessie Brueckner (Southern Belle), Victor Bruce (Indian Chief), Ella Thaler (Joker Lady), Annie Holubec (Witch), Marie Chasak (Devil), Ida Priesmeyer (Card Dealer), Heldur Anderson (Raggedy Ann), and Betty Lou Krieg (Witch).

Three prizes were presented and the winners were Ida Priesmeyer for the best overall costume, Heldur Anderson for the most creative, and Betty Lou Krieg for the scariest.

Later in the evening, some "trick-ortreaters" visited at the Rest Home and were given treats by residents Betty Lou Krieg, Alvie Lane and Emma Still and staff members Yolanda Flores, Maria Estrada, Brenda Raesz and Mr. Richards, Administrator.

Special thanks to those who helped in any way and to the ones who assisted with the Double Blackout Bingo games earlier at the party. Winners were Edna Granzin, Betty Lou Krieg and Nelda Schwab.

Mrs. Debra Hall from Rehability of Austin was the guest speaker at the S.P.J.S.T. Support Group Meeting held on November 2. She spoke on how much therapy can improve an individual's quality of life, especially after a heart stroke.

Heartfelt sympathy is extended to the family of Ed Hiebel.

Wharton County Czech Heritage Society Reports on December Meeting A delicious covered dish dinner was served before the annual Christmas party of the Wharton County Czech Heritage Society meeting on Tuesday evening, December 5.

President Marie Matcek bid the 81 members and guests welcome and Rev. Jim Pengleton gave the opening prayer.

President Matcek lead the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of the Czech National Anthem.

Guests from Port Lavaca, Bay City, Wharton; and East Bernard introduced themselves. Ladka Oskerova of the Czech Republic, spoke to the members in Czech and English and told of her travels aftout the United States. Member Tria Molberg was introduced as the newlyelected reporter of the State Heritage Society. She has been going to local schools to share her knowledge of the Czech culture with students and telling them of her travels in the Czech Republic. Alice Laitkep announced the winner of the handmade rug was Henrietta Klecka.

The minutes of the last meeting were read by Gladys Rod and the treasurer's report was presented by Edith Molberg.

Members of the Czech Heritage Society voted to purchase a brick for the building fund at the El Campo Branch Library.

A letter congratulating the members was received from Commissioner Merrill Adamcik along with a wish that they continue sharing their heritage with others.

Members were thanked for their prompt payment of 1996 membership dues.

Thanks were expressed to members who set up and decorated for the meeting.

Rev. and Mrs: James Pengleton and members of the First Christian Church were thanked for letting us use their lovely building. Members were congratulated for their attendance at Ennis for the State meeting. We were one of the largest groups attending. We are lucky to have so many meetings in our area. The next meeting will be in Fayetteville in March and Galveston in the summer. Our members certainly felt welcome, Mary Short reported.

Henrietta Klecka had a lovely display of Christmas ornaments and cards from the Czech Republic and the Mo'bergs displayed a Nativity scene given to them by their Bilek relatives during one of their visits. Virginia Balusek introduced the Wharton Czech Singers, and Frank Mildr on accordion who entertained us with a sing-along of Czech Christmas carols.

The evening ended with a rousing game before the exchange of Christmas gifts.

Travel to the

Czech Republic and Study Czech Travel to the Czech Republic and study Czech with people from all over the United States. The study tour will be from July 2 to July 26, 1996. The group leaders will be Thadious Polasek of Texas and Helena Briard of Prague, Czech

Republic.

Housing and food service will be at the dorms of the Agriculture School at Suchdol in the northern parrof Praha.

Instruction will be by professors of the Charles University and a linguistic institute in Praha. Along with the classes, there will be cultural excursions in Prague: tours of the Prague Castle, picture galleries, the Old Town, and much more. There will also be out-of-town excursions to: Kutna Flora, South Moravia, Telc, Karlovy Var, and Plzen.

For the first time, a special program for parent(s) plus a child or grandparent(s) plus a child will be offered. Details will be provided upon request.

Gazetteer of

Czech Texas 1939 The Czech Heritage Society of Texas is now publishing a new reference work on Texas Czech history entitled Gazetteer of Czech Texas 1939. The book, which was put together by Robert Janak of Beaumont, contains a wealth of information which has never before appeared in the same volume.

The work is divided into two parts: Communities of Czech Texas and Organizations of Czech Texas.

The first part of the gazetteer is structured like an encyclopedit for easy reference. Each community's entry consists of a list year by year of events, activities and descriptions of the community found in some 93 bibliographic sources. The lists variously include arrival of Czech settlers. , establishment of Roman Catholic, Moravian Brethren and Czech Presbyterian churches, founding of Czech-oriented organizations, publication of Czech newspapers and ethnic composition of the community at key points in time. Each of the entries is referenced to the work and page number where the information was found.

Individual half-page maps of the 79 counties covered pinpoint the location of each community.

The second part of the book is devoted to 18 organizations and institutions active in the Texas Czech community. They include CNS, CSPS, KD, KJT, KJZT, Movavian Brethren churches, Moravian Brethren preaching stations, NSCK, 1RKUJ, Roman Catholic churches, RVOS, Sokol, Southwest Czech Presbytery, SPJST, St. Isidore Society, SVPS, Vcelky and ZCBJ. A brief history of each statewide organization is followed by a list of local lodges, societies, units, parishes or congregations. Where possible the locality, number, founding date and name or patron of each local is included. Individual full-page maps showing the distribution of locals across the state accompany each writeup.

Austin Community College to Offer Czech Classes for Spring Semester Czech classes are being offered at Austin Community College in Austin, Texas. The TravisWilliamson County Czech Heritage Society invites Czechs or those who are interested in learning the 'Czech language to enroll in Czech classes.

The classes offered for the Spring semester are as follows: Conversation Czech I CSC-2-322040 is being offered for the student with little or no background in the Czech language who wants to learn to communicate in every day Czech.

Emphasis is on vocabulary, pronunciation and beginning conversion. No prerequisite is required. The class will meet from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The class begins on January 16 and continues for seven weeks for a total of 21 hours.

Conversation Czech II CSC-3763-040 is a continuation of Czech I designed for the student who had some basic knowledge of the Czech language or had completed Czech I. Emphasis is on improving vocabulary, basic sentence structure and speaking skills. The class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30 to 9 p.m. The claSs begins on March 19 and meets for seven weeks for a total 01'21 hours.

Conversation Czech III C.S . C943040 is a newly-introduced class offered at Austin Community College. The course is designed to increase conversation skills in the Czech Moravian dialect. Emphasis is on oral- language, increasing vocabulary, pronunciation, and mastery of basic sentence structure through participation and dialogue. Prerequisite for the course is completion of Czech I and II at ACC or the ability to converse in Czech and the consent of the instructor. The class meets once a week on Monday nights from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The class begins on January 22, 1996, and continues for seven weeks for a total of 21 hours. The instructor for the course is Monica Sedlacik Miller. She has a master's degree and is a native speaker of Brno, Czech Republica She emigrated to America and is an American citizen fluent in English. She speaks Czech with a Moravian dialect which the majority of Czech Texans speak.

Tuition for each course is $58.80.

All classes meet at Reagan High School in Austin.

The School of Independent Learning at the University of Texas currently offers two courses in the Czech language.

Czech 506 and 507 are designed to help beginners develop proficiency in understanding, reading, writing and speaking Czech. By using the texts, study guide, and cassette tapes, students are able to learn Czech in their own home. Upon completion of each course, the student earns five hours of college credit. Both courses are redesigned by Dr. Kevin Hannan of the University of Texas, Austin and they include information on the contemporary colloquial language and on Moravian pronunciation.

Joyce Cockrum, 55, of Rogers died Monday, November 13, 1995, in a Temple hospital.

Services were at 1 p.m. Thursday, November 16 at First United Methodist Church in Rogers with the Rev. Chris Kutin officiating. Burial was in Holland Cemetery.

She was born in Iola and moved to Rogers from Salado 11 years ago. She married Dr. Earl Cockrurri; Jr. on February 29, 1984. She was the publisher and editor of the Rogers Affiliated Press and a member of First United Methodist Church in Rogers.

Survivors are two sons, Alton Lewis Fuller, Jr. and Paul Wayne Wilkinson, both of Houston; two daughters, Terry Lynn Hughes of Houston and Donna Jean Wilson of Harrison, Michigan; two stepsons, Michael Cockrum of Tracy, California, and Patrick Cockrum of Rogers; four stepdaughters, Gloria Brayshaw of Spokane, Washington, Thelma Rose of Rogers, Georgia Montoya of Omaha, Nebraska, and Barbara Schultz of Mondovi, Wisconsin; and 17 grandchildren.

Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 177, Academy, in behalf of our entire membership wish to express our deepest and most sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother, VERNIE MAY, who passed away Saturday, November 18, 1995, in a Temple hospital. He was 78 years of age.

Mr. May was horn in Bell County to Edgar M. and Evie Evans May. He lived in Rogers and Temple before moving to Little River-Academy 29 years ago. He owned and operated May Grocery and Market in Rogers and retired as a truck driver for Rockwool Manufacturing in 1979.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Little River-Academy, Zerne Masonic Lodge in Holland, SPJST Lodge 177, Academy, and Wilson Valley Cemetery Association. He served on the Rogers School Board and as a councilman and mayor of Little River-Academy.

Survivors are his wife, Bernice May of Little River-Academy; three sons, Glenn May of Houston, James May of Belton

and Dean May of Little River-Academy; two daughters, Susie Waits of Dripping Springs and Sandra Unberhagen of Little River-Academy; one brother, Troy Lee May of Temple; one sister, Mable Welsh of Kerby, Oregon; 16 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Mr. Matus was horn June 12, 1920, in Foard County, Texas. He moved to Baylor County in 1989 from Thalia, Texas. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a farmer.

Survivors include three sisters, Julie Cerveny of Vernon, Mary Berenethy of Kilgore and Loretta of Seymour; three brohters, John of Vernon, Rudolph of Seymour, and Paul of Graham.

Expression of Sympathy The members and officers of SPJST Lodge 28, East Bernard wish to express our sympathy to the family of JOSEPH V. (JODY) KANAK. Mr. Joseph Victor (Jody) Kanak, age 59, of East Bernard died early Sunday morning, November 5, 1995, at his residence following an extended illness. He was born in Tavener on July 1, 1936, the son of Victor Joseph and Alma Berkovsky Kanak.

Mr. Kanak had been a lifelong resident of East Bernard and was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard. He worked as a senior repairman with Tennessee Gas Pipeline Company. He married Audrey Jean Kotrla on April 9, 1961, in East Bernard.

Mr. Kanak was a member of the East Bernard Volunteer Fire Department, the

Knights of Columbus, served on the Livestock Committee of the Wharton County Youth Fair for many years and also served as an usher at Holy Cross Catholic Church. He also served in the National Guard and was an honorary member of the FFA. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 28 for 35 years.

A rosary was recited Monday evening, November 6 at 7 p.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church and a funeral mass was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 7 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard with Father Gerry Cernoch officiating. Burial followed in the Holy Cross Catholic Church Cemetery in East Bernard.

Survivors include his wife, Audrey Kanak of East Bernard; daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa and Al Haedge and Alison and Scott Mazoch, all of East Bernard; his mother, Alma Kanak of East Bernard; two sisters Georgia Losack of East Bernard and Rosalie Millsap of Houston; and four grandchildren.

Pallbearers were David Stade, Joe Carmichael, Alva Brewer, Henry Hlavinka, Bennie Janik and James Hlavinka.

Honorary pallbearers were all of his many close friends, neighbors and coworkers at Tennessee Gas Pipeline.

Survivors include daughter and son-inlaw Dorothy and Jimmie Smallwood of Bay City; sisters, Edna Matula of Stafford, Texas, Sophie Biezenski and Gertrude Tallas, both of Van Vleck, Texas, Evelyn Schmalriede and Josie Warren, both of Houston, Texas; brother, Victor Foytik of Humble, Texas; four grandchildren, Dennis Ellis of Kilgore, Texas, Dwayne Smallwood, Romona Smallwood and Sonya Kjergaard, all of Bay City, Texas; and five great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Sindel was preceded in death by her husband Jim Sindel on February 26,

1990, and by a grandson Daniel Ellis on August 12, 1979.

Mr. Rotreke was horn in Slavkov Ubrna, Czech Republic on April 27, 1910. He was a lifetime resident of Dallas since 1912 and a graduate of Texas A&M in 1932. He served in the United States Army in Europe during World War II seeing combat in five campaigns and receiving the Purple Heart for battle injuries. He retired in 1975 from the Dallas Water Department after 40 years of service.

He was an active member of SPJST Lodge Jaro, No. 130 and Sokol until unable to participate.

He is survived by a sister, Rosa Kopecek; son Tomas Rotreke; and stepdaughters, Lynda Price and Barbara Stelle.

Expression of Sympathy The officers and members of Lodge 25, Ennis express their sympathy to the family of MARVIN H. WALKER. Funeral -services for Mr. Marvin H. Walker were at 3 p.m. Monday, November 27, 1995, in the Keever Chapel with Rev. George Weldon of the New Hope Baptist Church officiating.

Interment was in Myrtle Cemetery under the direction of J.E. Keever Mortuary with the following serving as pallbearers: Jero Fuller, Kenneth Holley, Sonny Davis, Warren McKenzie, Leon Walker and Donald Woodard.

Mr. Walker, 72, died Friday evening, November 24 in the Baylor Medical Center in Ennis.

He was born April 2, 1923, in Ennis.

He was the son of James H. and Viola Hill Walker. He was reared in Ennis where he attended school. After finishing school, he' worked on the family farm.

He worked for Fallen's Electric for a short time before 'entering the United States Army in 1945. After his discharge, he returned to Ennis and his job with Fallen's.. On February 26, 1945, he was married to Lila Garrett of Ennis. After their marriage, they lived in Ennis. He retired from Fallen's in 1962 and opened.

Walker'S Auto Electric in Ennis. He served as a City Commissioner for Ennis for several years. He was a member of the American Legion, SPJST, and Sokol.

Mr. Walker is survived by his wife, Lila of Ennis; one son, Donald Walker of Ennis; two daughters, Carol and her husband Edward Martin of Ennis and Shirley and her husband Danny Slovacek of Ennis; three brothers, Jessie Walker of Dallas and Marcus and Tommie Walker, both of Ennis; three sisters, Lorena Madewell and Shirley Minter, both of Ennis, and Josephine Martinez of Dallas; and three grandchildren, Erin and Rachel Martin and Scott Slovacek.

Mr. Walker is proceeded in death by one grandson, Chris Walker; one son, Robert Walker; three brothers, Virgil, Allen, and Jewel Walker; and two sisters, Ruby Hill and Lois Walker.

Born in Temple to Joe M. and Gladys Stiff Harrison, he graduated from Temple

High School, Temple Junior College, Southwest Texas State Teachers College, and Michigan State University Utility Management. He married Josephine Murrow in 1958 in Belton. He served the 36th Infantry Division of the National Guard from 1956 to 1965. He was employed • by T.E. Sanderford Construction Company from 1955 to 1966.

Mr. Harrison was director of public works for the City of Moody from 1966 to 1972, superintendent of utilities for the City of Georgetown from 1972 to 1975, field investigator for Texas Water Commission from 1975 to 1981, manager of water treatment for the City of Temple from 1981 to 1987, field superintendent for Lakeway Municipal Utilities District from 1987 to 1988 and superintendent of treatment and special projects since 1989.

He was announcer for the Little RiverAcademy dragstrip for many years. He served on the City Council and was a volunteer fireman for the City of Moody, parade chairman for Moody June Fest, a past master of Moody Masonic Lodge and a member of the Texas Water Utilities Association since 1967. He served in various capacities in state and local utilities associations and was appointed and served for five. years on the Texas Safety Education Committee. He instructed and participated in water utilities short schools and seminars. He was a member of the Double A Club of the Texas Water Association, held a perpetual Class A water certification, a perpetual Class A wastewater certification and was

a member of SPJST Lodge 177, Academy.

Survivors are his wife, Josephine Murrow Harrison of Moody; a son, Richard Harrison of Austin; two daughters, Diana Klepec of Bandera and Mary Gallian of Denver, Colorado; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m.

Tuesday, November 28, 1995, at Sheffield Funeral Home in Temple with the Rev. Don Johnson officiating.

Burial was in Wilson Valley Cemetery with Masonic rites.

He married Irene Alexander Johnson on September 15, 1971, in Bell County.

He was a member of Miller Heights Baptist Church in Belton, the Bell County Sportmans Club and SPJST Lodge 177, Academy.

Survivors are his wife, Irene Alexander Johnson of Belton; two sons, William C. Johnson, Jr. and Robert Eddie Johnson, both of Little RiverAcademy; two daughters, Dianah G. Jones of Little River-Academy and Rhonda Debbie Donovan of Buffalo, New York; two stepsons, Wilford L. Alexander and Wayne Alexander, both of Elgin; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, December 1, 1995, at Heartfield Funeral Home in Belton with the Rev. Billy Johnson officiating.

Burial was in Cedar Knob Cemetery in Salado.

Memory of Mildred Heitmann Voss In

Mildred Heitmann was horn in Sunnyside, Texas, on April 6, 1903, and passed away in Bullard, Texas, on November 25, 1995.

She became a child of God and an heir of God's eternal kingdom through Holy Baptism on May 26, 1903, in Galveston, Texas.

On December 30, 1945, Mildred was united in Holy Marriage to Irvin Voss.

Mildred was a prominent Dallas decorator associated with Mister Buster's, a distinguished Dallas decorating firm from the 1930s through the 1960s. As president of the Dallas Soroptimist Club and a founding member of its camp for crippled children, she devoted herself to helping others. She was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Dallas Circle of Czech Women.

Memorials may he made to the Soroptimist Camp, Trinity Lutheran Church, or a charity of your choice.

Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Irvin, and daughter, Bernice Ross.

Mrs. Voss is survived by two sisters, Georgia Long and Vlasta Rezek of Dallas; son-in-law George Ross of Bullard; grandchildren Charles Agnor of Tyler and Susan Atyeo of La Porte; nephews Jerry Bartos and William Ondrusek and nieces Shirley Wolfe and Deborah Long, all of Dallas.

4, Hallettsville Youth Club Gets Ready for Christmas

Dear Youth Club Members, " With Christmas just around the corner, the youth club of Lodge 4 is planning to celebrate the season in a different way this year. We already made "Rudolph" pins for the nursing home residents in Hallettsville. Since Hallettsville has two nursing homes, we are going to bring various items (toiletries, magazines, or other needed items) to the other one. Every year, we sing Christmas carols at the home.

The youth club is going to also have a Christmas party of their own with the adult lodge. The ybUth are to bring a gift to exchange for the Chinese Christmas we will have. With all of this going on, we will also have a special visit from a very special persOn. Don't forget to bring your gift, or you won't he able to exchange.

Dear Readers, We had a lot of fun at our December meeting. First, we had our meeting and then we made ornaments to go on the Christmas tree. My mama and Mrs. Macik decorated the tree. It sure is pretty.

We also had a pot luck dinner and then we put on a skit for Our family and friends. Then, when we were through, Santa came. I told Santa I was a bad and a good girl. He said he liked my honesty.

This will he the last day that votes (cans of food) will he taken. Members are asked to bring cans of food to place under the tree. All food will be donated to a local food hank.

A Christmas Greeting to Our Members "What is the SBJ, the SPT, the SJS. .?" we're asked quite often here.

And often is the question so much more than just sincere.

It's at that question we respond, "The SPJST, dear?"

"Yes, that's it!" the questioner responds with great surprise.

"The SPJST—that's it," they say, as if they won a prize.

Then we explain the following nameSlovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas.

"WHAT" they ask "is that?"

"Why it's Czech," we say in a pleasant way with a smile on our face and explain the story to their delight with style and with grace.

"And what is it that you do?" they ask. "We've seen the halls around.

And grew up going to dances there, but surely there is more."

"Oh yes!" we say. "You've got that right—there's much, much more than that.

The halls are places families meet, and fellowship and chat."

"That's all?" They act a little down, for there is mystery here.

"No—that's not all," we say again. "Let's make it perfectly clear."

And then we explain about this society. With a funny name, and a type of fame, the SPJST. We talk about its start in 1897, of how it was a little slice of Czechoslovak heaven.

Over years, it grew in numbers, for the foundation, it was strong with many types of benefits for members who belong.

"But, what makes you different from the others?" says the questioner in doubt.

"It's that we're sisters and we're brothers and that's what we're all about.

Our members are fraternalists," we proudly say when asked.

"No matter what the challenge, they'll always meet the task."

"Our members—yes they're special in many different ways, they use their special talents to make many happy days.

When there's something to be done, to make the world better, you can rest assured they're on the job and will do it to the letter!"

Then the questioner comes to understand the SPJST, of all the things that carry on in our society.

The business of fraternal life is a worthy one we're sure, for it's more than just insurance, it's a lifestyle that will endure.

This is a little story about the way things are, and from the truth it isn't very far.

One thing's for sure, and it is true, we're so happy for each one of you and appreciate all that you do, today, tomorrow and all the year through.

So at this Christmas Season and throughout the year, each one of us wishes each one of you, health, happiness and cheer.
