Temple Mayor Issues Czech Heritage Week Proclamation
City of Temple Mayor J.W. Perry, joined by SPJST officials at the Home Office in Temple, issues a proclamation declaring October 22 - 28 as Czech Heritage Week in Temple. This coincides with Czech Heritage Week in Texas, a statewide resolution enacted by the Texas House and Senate last June. Proclamation appears on page 3. Mary Polasek, at 89, was crowned queen, and Charles Peter,at the age of 84, was crowned king. The longest married couple of Czech descent in attendance was Anton and Adela Kaska, who have been married for 55 years. The Vanek Polka Band of Dallas under the direction of Al Vanek provided music for the afternoon, playing many of the old Czech favorites and electrifying the crowd with their lively polka and waltz selections. The members of this
orchestra have 115 years of combined musical experience. Festivities concluded with a Retreat Flag Ceremony held at the end of the day in front of the Hall of State Building.
