SPJST State King and Queen Ride in 1995 Westfest Parade

(Editor's Note: Special thanks to Editor Larry Knapek of the West News for providing this Westfest summary. Brother Knapek is a member of Lodge 36, West.) Westfest 1995 came to a close late Sunday night, September 3 as the last strains of polka music passed through dance tents and the food booths shut their windows for the final time completing yet another successful festival in its 20year history. "It was excellent, everything went smoothly. It was one of the smoothest run festivals that I can remember. Except for the extreme heat, it was a picture perfect festival," Westfest President John Hurtick said. (Continued on page 11.)

Beseda Dancers of Lodge 130, Dallas and the Lodge 47, Seaton Beseda Dancers both performed in the Cultural Pavilion. The Czech Folk Dancers of West, who also performed, included members of Lodge 6, Cottonwood, Lodge 54, West, and Lodge 66, Waco. Other SPJST lodge members participated in the Parade of Authentic Czech Costumes.

The Westfest Parade on the morning of Saturday, September 2 kicked off a fun-filled day complete with games, rides, singing, dancing and lots of food for thousands of participants and spectators. Among these enthusiastic participants were the new SPJST State King C.J. Novak, State Queen Brandi Dum, State Duke Rusty Sims and State Duchess Kristine Dum. Our royal couple began their day by cruising down Main Street in West in a red convertible, generously provided by Sykora Ford of West, greeting spectators and enthusiastic supporters. After a quick lunch and some siteseeing, the Royal Court met at the Cultural Center, located on the Westfest grounds, where they were formally introduced to the public. We can't think of a better way

to begin the year than among the people who continue to preserve and support the Czech heritage. We wish to thank C.J., Brandi, Rusty and Kristine for the excellent job they did in representing the youth of our SPJST. We would also like to express our gratitude to their family and friends for taking time out of their busy schedules to offer support and encouragement to these outstanding young people. We would also like to extend a special "thank you" to the community of West for their hospitality, and we look forward to seeing everyone again next year. The next appearance of the State King and Queen will he at the Texas Fraternal Congress on October 21, 1995, in Austin where they will host the TFC Youth Spectacular. —SPJST-
