Something to Talk About Getting to Know You On page four of this week's Vestnik, the President's Office provides readers with thumbnail sketches of our District Two and District Four officers. Profiles of other district officers will be presented in advance of their respective district fall fun days.

"This is something new we're trying this year," says Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar. "We're not trying to write a book or anything ...We just want everyone to get acquainted with their district officers-and to know that they are there for a purpose: To accept, act on, and relay member concerns and suggestions."

"As it's been, we haven't fully utilized the potential of our district officers or our spring and fall meetings," President Leshikar states. "We elect people to leadership positions on the district level For them to be truly successful, they need the input of the membership.

"The brief sketches that we've compiled are an attempt to put district officers in the forefront. In exchange, we are hoping to initiate some discussion on the issues facing our local lodges and the Society in general ..."

President Leshikar explains, referring to a recent interview with Brother Michael Morris, which appeared in this column.

"Michael called attention to the fact that we're largely missing the 20-40 yearold crowd in terms of active participation in our local lodges. This is a very important segment of our membership. This is the kind of thing we need to talk about at our district meetings. What kind of services should we be providing?

"You know, we all get into ruts . .

We get caught up in doing things one way just because we've always done them that way. That alone isn't a good reason to do anything. It's time we started looking at what the active lodges of the 21st Century will look like," President Leshikar suggests. "It's an exciting prospect. I am sure our members and district officers will want to share their ideas and opinions on the subject."

Money Isn't Everything A friend and fellow editor, Joe Dan Boyd, with Farm Journal, writes, "All I really need to know, I learned on a cotton farm . . . In the whiteness of an October cotton field, surrounded by a host of relatives, friends and neighbors, I waswithout realizing it-beginning to learn life's most important lessons."

He then proceeds to tell about how the farming community in which he was raised emphasized pride in self-reliance and working together.

"I was about two years old when it dawned on me that everyone beyond a certain age is expected to pull his (or her) own weight.

"There was honest pride in picking cotton by hand, although both competition and greed provided very stern tests. We had heard all about hotshot pickers who talked trash, and supposedly tossed itleaves, branches, weeds, even an occasional rock-into their picksacks."

It wasn't just about making money, says Joe Dan. It was about people of all ages working together to achieve and share a better way of life. "Very little money changed hands except when someone went to town or took a crop to market," he says. "And while swapping work, folks also swapped stories, songs, farm experiences and sugar-coated memories. Through this ancient custom, work often did resemble play."

If you grew up in a close-knit community, then you know the feeling that Joe Dan is trying to convey. It's the same feeling you get from being involved in an active SPJST lodge. A successful lodge represents a community of members working together. And, under many circumstances, work does resemble play.

The whole purpose of the local lodge is for the participation of the individual.

Thanks to the many men, women and children who are working enthusiastically to ensure the success of their local lodges and fraternal order. With enthusiasm in your lodge, you will find yourself constantly moving forward to new forms of expression.

Around the Districts District Two Fall Fun Day September 17, 1995 at Lodge 29, Taylor Dear District Two Members, This is a reminder that the District Two Fall Meeting will be held on Sunday, September 17, 1995, at Taylor SPJST Lodge 29 in Taylor, Texas.

The day will begin with registration starting at 1 p.m. The District Youth Club will meet at 1:30 p.m. and the adult meeting will start at 2 p.m. The games will begin shortly following the business meeting and last until 4:30 p.m. Door prizes and announcements will be made at 4:30 p.m. along with raffle winners and

winners in the youth club silent auction.

Contest Guidelines 1. The SPJST Kolache Baking Contest is open to all SPJST members of nonprofessional status. Non-professionals are considered those who do not sell kolaches through a bakery or other establishment.

2. Kolache must be made from scratch, using yeast dough.

3. Entries must consist of six average size kolache of the same filling on a disposable tray or plate.

4. Kolache entries must be made by one person, no team entries.

District Six Fall Meeting September 17 at Lodge 30, Taiton The 1995 fall social District Six SPJST meeting will be held September 17 at Lodge 30, Taiton. The proposed agenda is as follows: Registration: 11:00 - 11:45 a.m.

We are asking each lodge to furnish two desserts to serve with the catered meal and afternoon coffee.

Letters Section

Lodge 4, Hallettsville Reports on Annual Family Day Dear Members, Our lodge held its annual Family Day on Sunday, August 13, 1995, at the American Legion Hall in Hallettsville.

Around 11 a.m., members, their families and guests started to arrive.

Refreshments were served and the youth club sponsored a cake walk, quarter drop and raffle booth for enjoyment. They also had their Youth Achievement Day craft entries on display for viewing.

At 12:30 p.m., President Joe Siptak welcomed everyone. Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar gave the meal blessing. Everyone then enjoyed a delicious catered meal of barbecue brisket and sausage with all the trimmings. A large variety of desserts brought by the members was also enjoyed.

A short meeting followed. It began with the pledge to the flag and introductions of special guests, Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar and his wife, Mary, of Temple and District Six Director Matt Vanek and his wife, Henrietta, of Victoria. Also present was our oldest member, Joseph Jansky, who is 101 years young. President Siptak introduced the lodge officers.

Our 50-year members were then introduced. Each received a corsage or boutonniere. Present to receive the pins were Irene Butschek, Leona Mae Guenther and husband Robert, Julius P. Hauslik and wife Frances, and Rose Kloppenburg. Unable to attend were: Mildred A. Netardus, Georgie B. Pawlik, Earlene Strauss for her deceased husband Charles H. Strauss, and Louise Vesely.

Also receiving the pins from another year were: Wylie Jansky and Joe Jansky.

Congratulations to these members on this great achievement.

Supreme Lodge President Leshikar

and Director Vanek spoke to the members. Lodge sales representatives present were Mary Matula, Erwin Holy and Annie Vahalik. Also present was Adolf Motal, sales representative from Victoria.

Another guest was our SPJST $500 scholarship recipient, Jeff Appelt. He spoke briefly to the members on his college plans. He will be attending St. Mary's University in San Antonio. Jeff is the son of Jimmy and Marie Appelt and the grandson of Erwin and Evelyn Holy and James and Helen Appelt.

Youth Leader Annie Vahalik reported on the successful District and State Youth Achievement Days. She read a list of all the lodge winners. Annie also thanked everyone for making the District YAD on July 16 in Hallettsville a success with their cooperation and dedication.

Appreciation certificates were presented to Evelyn Holy, Lillie Balusek, Margaret Smotek, Viola Holly, Gaynell Chudej, and Patsy and Helen Zabransky. Annie then recognized the youth club members that had perfect attendance at the 1994-95 youth club meetings. They were: Tucker and Trevor Scott, Adam and Joshua Siptak, and Elizabeth Wagner.

A youth program followed with James Svetlik, the District Six King who represented our lodge and District Six at the State Royalty contest, giving his speech.

His duke was Adam Siptak. James then introduced the program performers of the various winning talent entries from District and State YAD as: Trevor Scott presenting Take Me Out to the Ball Game; Joshua Siptak presenting Love Man; Elizabeth Vahalik performing a ballet to Beauty and the Beast; Nicholas Vahalik playing a guitar medley; Elizabeth Wagner twirling to Can't You Feel the Love Tonight; Nicholas and Elizabeth Vahalik performing Czech and English songs; and Adam and Joshua Siptak, Trevor and Tucker Scott, John and Brian Richardson, Scott Holly, and Jeremy Kalmus presenting Running Bear.

Door prizes were then drawn and the lucky winners were Tucker Scott, Trevor

47, Seaton Reports on September Meeting Lodge

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Vice President Edwin Pechal called the meeting to order on Tuesday, September 5 at 7 p.m. Flag Bearers Lisa Greger and Crystal Bartek brought in the flags and led in the pledge to the flag.

Those reported to have been sent getwell cards were Brothers Don Motl, Frank Dukatnik and Floyd Stuteville and

a birthday card to Brother Charlie Hrachovy on his 90th birthday in August.

He comes to meetings when they are held on Sunday afternoons. I hope you had a wonderful party, Brother Hrachovy. I hope also that those named who were recently hospitalized are doing better and on the way to recovery. If any member is in the hospital, let me or Joyce Skrabanek know, so a get-well card may be sent when needed the most.

Secretary Dolores Skrabanek read the roll call of officers, trustees and sales representatives with Parliamentarian and Trustee Rickie Novosad and Trustee James Skrabanek absent. She also read the minutes of the August 13 meeting and they were approved as read. There was no correspondence to be read.

New members were Howard Daniels, Julie Wiseman and Christine Nicole Merka. John Mark Langford took additional insurance. Welcome to Lodge 47!

Edwin Vasicek, board secretary, read the minutes of the August 21 meeting to enlighten the rest of the membership on their deliberations.

President Calvin Skrabanek thanked all who helped during the month of August, especially those who decorated for the barn dance.

Mark your calendars for special dances to be be held in October. On Saturday, October 7, a fruit harvest dance will be held complete with the jail, judge and deputies. If you have not been to one, please make an effort to be there when the Czech Harvesters Orchestra of Dallas is playing for this dance. Also, on October 28, a Halloween dance will be held complete with the spooks and goblins—so dress up and come join the fun.

We will be guessing who you are.

President Skrabanek also spoke about the trash pick-up held on Saturday, August 26.

Vice President Pechal said that Don Motl wished to thank everyone for the cards, visits and inquiries about him when he had his heart attack. He also stated that Don was advised to walk for his health. He got me to walk with him at their home and now we have a number of people joining in at Star Hall's parking lot. If you wish to join the health conscious, be at Seaton Star Hall at 7 p.m. each evening. It's just great walking and talking. Everyone can profit from this exercise on the paved and smooth surface. Join and you will be glad you did.

Second Vice President Hanusch presented a Czech Republic flag donated by Victor Janak of Houston. Brother Janak, thanks for this donation. She also reported that family night socials will resume in September. The first is on Friday, September 15. Come hungry for hamburgers and french fries starting at 6 p.m. with games beginning at 7 p.m.

Progressive 42 will be played with straight dominoes for others. The winners will be awarded prizes.

A volleyball team is needed from our lodge to participate in the state tournament in November. The pennies drive for scholarships will be starting on October 1 through December 31. This year, 91 scholarships for $500 were awarded to those who submitted entries for their higher education.

The District Two Fall Meeting and Fun Day will be held at Lodge 29, Taylor on Sunday, September 17 beginning at 1 p.m. with registration; the youth meeting at 1:30 p.m.; and a short business meeting at 2 p.m. for the adults. Complete details were in the September 6 issue of the Vestnik as to the contests you may enter, etc. in Sharon Holman's letter.

The chairperson's reports were given

as were those of the treasurer and financial secretary. All reports were favorable.

The salary committee and the maintenance committee both met after the lodge meeting was adjourned.

The renovation of the rest rooms to accommodate wheel chair occupants is about to begin.

The ceiling fans have been installed in the kitchen. It makes it more pleasant while cooking. Now one of our central air conditioners is out of commission.

There's always something to repair.

Ginger Greger gave the youth leader's report. David Koslovsky is the youth club president and conducted their meeting. They had 16 members present, one guest and three adults. A scrapbook committee was chosen and the Christmas tree ornament contest at the fall meeting was discussed. The dance program that was approved by the Supreme Lodge will be tried at Seaton Lodge 47 for the youth ages 3 through 17 years. All types of dances will be taught—folk, jazz, etc.

Sounds like fun, fun, fun! These groups can then perform and compete at the Youth Achievement Days. Sister Greger also stated that the youth club wants to deliver the Christmas dinner to the shutins on December 10, which was approved. That will be here before we know it. I bet Santa Claus is getting ready, too. Door prize winners were Shannon Pechal and Steven Faichtinger.

Their next meeting is on Sunday, October 1 at 2 p.m.

The play day for the District Eight FFA will be held at Seaton Star Hall grounds again this year. They must have enjoyed their time at Seaton last year.

They will play games and have use of the annex building.

Brother Frank Klinkovsky stated that a nurse, Zita Barcak, from an agency in Temple, was wanting to come speak on nutrition, medication and exercise for those under doctor's care and also to answer questions from our members attending the meeting about Medicare, etc. Frank told me that she is not available for the October 1 meeting but would come to November 5 meeting. If you have some health questions that you would like to have answered, be sure to come to the meeting on Sunday, November 5 at 1 p.m. This is our annual meeting with elections of officers and delegates to the next SPJST Convention in 1996 in Arlington.

The only birthday girl we had was Donna Baca and the only couple who married in September was Calvin and Dolores Skrabanek. Happy Birthday and Anniversary to those named that were present at the meeting and others of you celebrating your "special" days in the month of September! Have a good one!

You all come to the October 1 meeting to begin at 2 p.m. The attendance was very small at this meeting so let's all try to come to the next one which is on the first Sunday to which we are accustomed to coming. Guess what? It is raining as I am writing this report. Maybe cooler weather is on the way.

48, Beyersville to Host Progressive 42 Tournament

Lodge

SPJST Lodge 48, Beyersville will host a Progressive 42 Tournament on Saturday, October 21, 1995. Registration fee is $10 and includes the noon meal, snacks and prizes.

Registration begins at 8:15 a.m. and we plan to begin playing at 9:15 a.m.

Fifteen games will be played with a time limit of 20 minutes per game. The tournament should end around 4:30 p.m.

We especially invite SPJST members but anyone is welcome. You do not need a partner as all players will draw numbers and be seated accordingly for the first round. The two winners will move to next table and split up and play with the losers who remain at that table. There will be no head table thus all winners will move.

We will use the same rules that the State SPJST uses. Also, we ask that as many persons as possible please pre-register so we can plan the food needs. But it is not a must to pre-register.

49, Rowena Reports on August Meeting

Lodge 49, Rowena met for their quarterly meeting on August 3 at 7 p.m. in the lodge hall.

The meeting was called to order by President Elizabeth Walther. She lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was then observed for all departed members. Roll call of officers was given by Secretary Nancy Schwertner. Minutes of the May 3 meeting were read and approved. Nancy Schwertner gave the financial report due to the absence of Treasurer Beverly Teplicek.

Reports were given by all committees.

District Four Director Stanley Broz also gave a short report.

Under old business, all members were reminded to bring their old clothes to Sylvia Rollwitz's house to be taken to San Angelo State School.

Our 50-year pin presentations will be on October 21, 1995, at 3 p.m. in the lodge hall. Supper will be served at 5:30 p.m. Receiving 50-year pins are David Dorotik, Robert Dorotik, Bobby Joe Hejl, Del Roy Jezek, Adeline Martin, and James Teplicek.

The lodge hall received damage from the July 3 hail storm. Repairs are in the process of being fixed.

President Walther gave a list of dates that the hall will be in use.

Lodge 63, Sweet Home will hold its monthly meeting and social on September 17, 1995, at the Sweet Home Community Center beginning at 12 noon.

Happy hour will be followed by a meal of hamburgers and all the trimmings.

Members are asked to bring desserts.

After the meal, a short meeting will be conducted. Several business matters will be discussed and reports will be given.

Someone with a birthday in July, August or September will win a birthday cake baked by Ann Moseley. Attendance prizes will also be awarded.

The rest of the afternoon will be spent playing games and visiting. Bring any games you wish to play. Also we will be honoring our grandparents at this social so bring any recent photos of the grandchildren.

81, Needville Reports on August Meeting

Lodge

On a midsummer afternoon with the temperature hovering at 99 degrees, 45 members and three guests met at Lodge 81 in good ole' Needville on August 20, 1995.

At twelve noon, President Macha announced that dinner was ready to be served. President Macha said the blessing before the meal. Barbecue beef and sausage was the main course. All of the gracious ladies of the lodge brought many goodies consisting of a great variety of vegetables, salads, and desserts. Thanks, ladies.

A glance at the clock on the wall signaled it was 1 p.m. and time for the meeting to begin. Therefore, the president called the meeting to order. Louis Hanus led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. In the roll call of officers, it was noted that Vice President Vincent Newman was absent.

The remainder of the officers were present.

Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes from the July meeting. They were approved after a minor error was correct ed. Mary then read the correspondence she had received. Willie Mae Kuykendall, our treasurer, presented the monthly financial report. It was accepted as read. Brother Gilbert Walzel, our spe,

cial fund chairman, began his report with the calendar of events for the coming month. Gilbert's financial report of the special fund was given and then accepted as presented.

In memory of our departed sister, Imogene Miller, a moment of silence was observed. Our prayers and love go out to the bereaved family. Get-well wishes are being sent to Brother Jerry Blinka and Sister Adeline Bacica.

In other news, the Needville Little League presented our SPJST lodge with a beautiful plaque. Our lodge is one of many sponsors of youth baseball in Needville. Congratulations to all youngsters who participated in the baseball program. You are all winners.

On the day of our meeting, your former reporter, Mrs. Louise Newman, was celebrating her 74th birthday. On behalf of the lodge, we want to wish you many more "Happy Birthdays." May the Lord bless you with good health. Also celebrating a birthday in our midst on August 18, 1995 ; was Brother Louis Hanus. A belated "Happy Birthday" to you and may God bless you with many more.

Jeanette Newman reported that by November 1, 1995, a fraternalist from our lodge will have to be named. We all need to start thinking of someone who is worthy of this title.

Our District Five Director Louis Hanus was able to be with us this month.

Barbecue beef, sausage, and fried chicken along with the trimmings will be served starting at 11 a.m. Bobby Jones Orchestra will play during the noon time until 2 p.m., at which time the auction will begin. There will be entertainment all day for everyone.

92, Fort Worth Reports on Tarok Tournament

Lodge Dear Members, Members attending last Monday's meeting stood for a moment of silence in memory of two of our departed members, Brother Frank Kocian and Brother Frank Malik. To the families, we extend sincere sympathy. May our departed members rest in peace.

President Yeager then kept the meeting going at a fast pace—a practice session, I'm sure, because those football games get started next Monday.

Youth Leader Bessie Petr reported how pleased our Lodge 84 members should be with all of the youth winning so many categories at State Youth Achievement Day. Brother C.J. Novak is the State King. We congratulate him and all who won during this competition. It was a happy day.

Our sunshine committee sent get-well cards to the following persons: Amber Ondrusek, Ida Schultz, John Polak, Ben Kriska, Bob Kolenovsky, Annie Petr, and Joe Parrino. Sympathy cards were sent to Emilie Horak Elbert family on the loss of her husband; Louise Malik and family; Mary Ellen Kocian and family; and Emil Slovak on the loss of Brother John.

Congratulations to Dr. Kenny and Debbie Horak on the birth of a new baby.

We wish to thank District Three Director Sid and Justine Pokladnik for a lovely get-together at their lake house. It was our first picnic in several years. If you attended, then you know there was plenty of food, drinks, entertainment by two bands (even Brother Sid was seen among the band members—playing all that good German music) and a lot of fraternal get-together which was seen throughout the shade, where everyone in their chairs relaxing enjoyed the full day.

Our Czech Fest gets started on Saturday, September 16. Come dance to the Czech Harvesters. On Sunday, September 17, doors open at 11:30 a.m. Dinner will be served from 12:30 to 2 p.m. and it will be catered by Bessie's Catering. The cost will be $6.50 for adults and $3.50 for children. The ladies of Lodge 84 are asked to please bring pastries to be served with the dinner.

As soon as you finish dinner, you will want to enjoy the country store, gift booth, youth games, cake walk, games and other fun things. Don't forget your raffle tickets and the door prize of $100 will be drawn during the dance from 3 to 6 p.m. with the Al Vanek band playing.

Dear Members and Friends, The members of Lodge 92 would like to congratulate all the tarok players that came here to play on August 26. There were many players from other lodges across Texas. The ones that came the farthest were Anton and Hilda Demel and Joe, and Delores Vyvjala from Schulenberg, Texas. Others also came from long distances.

So thanks to all of you for getting out of bed so early in the morning to get here by 8:30 a.m. But where there is a tarok game, it is hard to pass up and not be there to play. Thanks goes to the one that started the games here in Texas.

We had 52 players trying to win first place but only one can take the top place.

All players want to thank Helen Kubala and daughter Sherri Watkins for the early morning snacks and for the tasty dinner.

Mary Ann Krivanek and Martha Janca also helped in the kitchen.

The August lodge meeting began at 7:35 p.m. on Wednesday, August 23 with 42 members present. Visitors were Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar and State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Frank Klinkovsky and his wife Irma, and District Five Director Louis Hanus. This was a very pleasant surprise and we were delighted to have them attend.

Brother Klinkovsky led the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and a moment of silence to our deceased members was observed.

All officers were present for roll call except Trustee J.B. Thomas. All correspondence was noted and acted upon.

Officers' and chairpersons' reports were read and accepted.

Brothers Leshikar, Klinkovsky and Hanus gave brief talks on state and district information and news. Members were asked to attend the District Five meeting at Lodge 88, Houston on September 24. If you attend, please bring a vegetable or pastry dish for the covered dish dinner. Lodge 172 always has many members to attend the district functions.

Members approved the removal of ten tables and 80 chairs from the ballroom so as to have more space between tables.

These will be replaced for the Czech Festival and the New Year's Eve Dance.

We will be receiving bids for a new sound and address system for the ballroom.

Roznovak Celebrates 100th Birthday

Agnes Roznovak celebrated her birthday on August 16 at 2:30 p.m. at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Taylor. Her son Marvin, daughter-in-law Artie, granddaughter Kathy Woodward, friends and staff made this a very special day for this lovely lady.

Her granddaughter wore a pretty white laced dress that Mrs. Roznovak wore on her 15th birthday. Two other dresses were on display for this occasion. One of these dresses was worn on her confirmation day.

Her nieces and nephews from Houston presented her with an attractive basket filled with 100 beautiful red roses. The Taylor Daily Press published an article of this special person.

The State of Texas and Williamson County presented Mrs. Roznovak with a Resolution signed by Judge John Doerfler proclaiming August 16, 1995, as her day.

Happy Birthday!

East Harris County Senior Citizens Center for the Hometown Opera. This was a very entertaining evening and plans are to attend the Alvin Grand Ole Opera in September. Thank you, Bobbie and Mike.

Chairperson Helen Wallace reported that our Saturday night dances have fallen off during the summer months but we expect to see a larger attendance starting with the Labor Day weekend dance. We want to also mention that on Friday, September 29 in coordination with the Polka Lovers Klub of America, the first Friday night polka dance will be held at Lodge 172. This will be very good music by the Sound Connection for only $2.50 per person from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

This is also a chance to win a trip to Las Vegas for two. So, all you members that love polka music, please come out and enjoy yourself.

Plans are complete for our Ninth Annual Gulf Coast Czech Festival on October 21 and 22 with the addition of the Czech Youth Symphony from the Czech Republic. That weekend begins the week of the Czech Heritage week for the state of Texas.

Our next work party day is Monday, October 2 at 8:30 a.m. but we plan to have another extra work day in September. You will be notified later by phone.

The next meeting for the lodge is September 27. This is also our covered dish dinner at 6:30 p.m. Please attend as we have several important items to discuss and vote on.

Remember that Vicki Dressler is encouraging members to help on the arts and crafts for our festival.

Pictured, with Sister Agnes Roznovak, are her son, Marvin Roznovak and granddaughter, Kathy Woodward. Sister Roznovak, who was born in Vsetin, in Lavaca County, has been a resident at S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1 in Taylor since 1993.

County, to Tom Hurta and Albina Srvensky Hurta. She married John Roznovak in the Taylor Brethren Church, of which she is still a member.

This family bought their farm in 1907 and most of the land still belongs to descendants. Her son Marvin and granddaughter live in Taylor. Another son, Reynold, was killed in World War Two in 1945. Her husband died in 1986. Agnes became a resident of S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in October, 1993.

Mrs. Roznovak had a special and wonderful time greeting everyone at the party. They discussed the past, present and future.

Refreshments were served and her large cake had the number "100" across it. Other refreshments were nuts and delicious punch served by her daughterin-law and granddaughter.

Youth Letters Section District Two Youth to Meet Sunday, September 17 Dear Vestnik Readers, The District Two Fall Meeting will be held at Lodge 29, Taylor on Sunday, September 17, 1995. The annual Christmas Ornament Contest (see Rule Book for guidelines) will be held with registration from 1 to 1:30 p.m. I want to encourage all youth to enter this contest.

Please note ornaments made at camp will not be qualified for judging. Good luck to all of your entries.

The fall youth meeting will begin at 1:30 p.m. Plans will be made for a district lock-in. Please be in attendance.

We need your suggestions and ideas.

The youth club will once again have a silent auction at the meeting. Each youth club is asked to donate at least one item of $10 or more value. Other items will also be accepted and appreciated. Funds raised from the auction will be used for our district lock-in.

In December, 1869, Joseph Orsak with his wife Apolona, and daughter Anna, age two years, left Karlovice, Moravia, for Galveston, Texas, to settle in Fayetteville, Texas. The descendants of this Czech family will gather in El Campo at the American Legion Auxiliary Hall on Highway 71 South, at 10 a.m. to celebrate the 45th annual reunion on October 1, 1995.

Marek - Supak- Haisler Reunion The 31st annual reunion will be held on Sunday, October 1, 1995, at the Hus School Church Camp in the New Tabor Community on County Road 225, off FM 166, from Highway 36 south out of Caldwell, Texas. Registration begins any time after 9 a.m. A covered dish lunch will be shared and served between 12 and 12:30 p.m. After lunch, the family meeting will be held, followed by a drawing for lots of door prizes.

This year, the host families are the descendants of the Adolph Marek and Hynek Marek families.

Svoboda - Cabla Family Reunion The 19th Annual Svoboda-Cabla family reunion will be held Saturday, October 14, 1995, at the Seaton Community Center beginning with registration at 10 a.m.

The meal will be served at noon. Each family is asked to bring a vegetable, salad or dessert. Barbecued beef and fried chicken is being provided as well as bread, drinks, cups, plates, forks, knives and spoons. To cover costs of the reunion, there will be a meal charge of $2 for adults and 75 cents for children under age 12. After lunch, there will be a short business meeting followed by games.

cabins for the tired younger campers but the teenagers still had plenty of energy to play "Over the Wall."

Saturday was filled with so many activities starting at 7:45 a.m. After flag raising and breakfast, campers were divided into three groups. These groups alternated archery, challenge course, and canoeing with snow cone breaks in between. After lunch, the younger group made a craft. They created a Christmas bear ornament out of wash cloths. The two older groups switched activities the older campers created angels from wash cloths for their craft and the younger ones hiked on their African Safari. After that, all campers were ready for swimming.

So many funny things happened with all of these activities. We had campers that could paddle a canoe that was completely filled with water, campers that had a very unusual way of shooting a bow and arrow, and campers that didn't even mind being shot (with water guns) on the safari. With temperatures hovering around the 100-degree mark, any type of water activity was welcomed.

Saturday night is always our big party night and this year was no exception.

LITs decorated a Christmas tree since our camp theme was "Christmas in July."

Since we switched seasons, we decided to switch roles for our costumes. All ot the girls dressed up like boys and the boys dressed like girls. We all laughed so hard at how funny everyone looked.

Some were so disguised that we could not even tell who they were. The boys looked hilarious with all of their wigs, makeup and cute dresses. They did learn to appreciate how long it really does take a girl to get dressed now. We had a surprise visit from "Santa Leonard" (who (Editor's Note: Please see related pho- was dressed as Mrs. Santa, of course).

The special event this year was karaoke night. We did not realize how many great singers we have in District Three.

The fabulous annual hay ride by Richard and Louise Burney is a ride the campers look forward to every year.

We want to especially thank the donors of food, cold drinks, ice cream, snow cones, Little Debbie's cookies, and candy. These were used for our snacks.

The hamburgers with all the trimmings were a great hit.

Most of all, we appreciate the many counselors who took off from work to be with our youth. Without your support, there would not be camp because we need adult supervision.

There is only one person at camp that can make headaches, stomach aches, and home sickness go away and the scratches feel better. Thank you, Nurse Gladys Yates.

Hats off to the SPJST society for allowing our youth to have a summer program such as this and giving me the opportunity to work with the youth.

District Four Youth Counselor Reports on Summer Camp

10/VESTNIK—Wednesday, September 13, 1995 theatre, bird show, alligator exhibit, sky spiral, ferry boat ride, and especially the sky ride. Of course, we couldn't miss "Ralph, the swimming pig." That evening had us continuing on to New Braunfels and the Resort at the Bahn at Schlitterbahn. Here, everyone had a great time swimming, enjoying pizza, socializing and finally getting to bed so we would be ready for a day at Schlitterbahn on Monday.

Monday started off with everyone enjoying a "home cooked" breakfast, packing up the cars and getting plenty of sun-block on. We then ventured to Schlitterbahn to get in just as the gates opened. Everyone spent the entire day riding all of the fun rides, stopping by our picnic table for nourishments and drinks and managing to somehow get a little sunburned, too. We intended to leave the water park around 5 p.m., but everyone was having just too much fun, so it was 8 p.m. when we could get away.

I would like to thank everyone who helped transport campers to and from camp. I would especially like to thank the leaders who assisted me at camp.

Betty Schwartz, Nancy Schwertner, Robyn Jansa and Debbie Halfmann were all such a tremendous help with everything at. camp. I could not ask for a better group!

My greatest thanks go to the campers from District Four! All of you were super! You were all so cooperative in all activities, well-behaved, and mannerly.

The staff at Camp Lone Star had nothing but praise for you. I felt very sad when Monday evening arrived because I knew camp was nearly over. I was having such a fantastic time with all of you that I didn't want it to end. But the best part about being in the SPJST youth club is that we will get to do it all over again next year!

9, Snook Youth Club Holds Annual Fund Raiser Lodge

Dear Vestnik Readers, Camp, Youth Achievement Day, and State Youth Achievement Day were all fun this summer.

Our Lodge 13, Dime Box Junior Group Talent won first place at District and second place at State.

I came out with one other first place ribbon and two second place ribbons at District.

I am going to rename my food— "Earthquake Cake" to "Second Place Earthquake Cake!" I was called upon to enter my dessert in State YAD as the first place winner was unable to attend. Yes, you guessed it! My cake came in second place again.

Dear Readers, On August 13, 1995, Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club had their monthly meeting followed by a chicken fried steak lunch.

Fifteen members were given an award for perfect attendance and five members were given certificates for entering the 1995 Camp T-shirt Design Contest.

Lodge 29, Taylor Youth Club Reports on August Meeting The August 11, 1995, meeting of Lodge 29, Taylor SPJST Youth Club was called to order by President Lisa Haag.

Adam Tallas led the Pledge of Allegiance and the motto.

Secretary Kristine Muegge read the minutes and called roll. There were 19 members present, two guests, and nine adult visitors. Four new members were added to the club at the meeting.

Treasurer Jeffery Kelm gave his report.

Members were reminded of the workshop to be held in Temple on Saturday, August 26. The topic was "Being an Effective Leader." State Youth Achievement Day results were announced. Youth members who placed were Jeffery Kelm, second place, and Lacy Cervenka, second place.

The August social would be the Six Flags trip on August 12. Motion was Pictured, at right, are members of the Lodge 66, Waco Youth Club who participated in SPJST State Youth Achievement Day in Temple.
