Getting back to the basics
Youth clubs focus on problem solving Approximately 100 SPJST youth club members, youth leaders and adult volunteers met on Saturday, August 26, at the Holiday Inn in Temple for the 1995 Youth Club Officers Workshop. The meeting, which was the first of its kind, offered instruction on a range of leadership tasks, including how to conduct an effective group meeting. "Learning to listen, evaluate situations and getting things done as a team are very important skills," explained State Youth Director Joni Lange, who organized the workshop. "By encouraging our young people in these areas, we help them acquire skills that can help them for the rest of their lives and in a variety of situations." Instructing workshop participants was Wayne Toone, a speech and drama instructor at Temple Junior College for the past twenty years. As a credit to his teaching ability, Instructor Toone recently coached Temple Junior College's awarding winning student government parliamentary procedure team. The workshop schedule was divided into five parts: 1. Leadership—Your Role as an Officer and Committee Chairperson;
2. Outline of Parliamentary Procedure and Agendas; 3. Problem Solving Within Committees; 4. Problem Solving Activities; and 5. Questions and Answers . "I was very impressed with our young leaders and their performance during the workshop" observed Sister Lange. "Their willingness to challenge themselves and learn new things was inspiring. That, along with their vision and creativity, will serve our SPJST well in the future." Costs for the 1995 Youth Club Officers Workshop were underwritten by the SPJST Home Office. Participants, however, covered their own personal expenses, including travel and accommodations while attending the session. "That's an important point to make," says Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar, who also addressed the workshop. "We've got to get back to providing more of this basic kind of education for our members—both youth and adults. People are willing to commit their time if they believe it will make a difference." —SPJST-
District Seven members pull for the hometown team during SPJST Family Night at San Antonio Municipal Stadium.
Family Night at the ball game makes a hit in District Seven It was SPJST Family Night on Sunday, July 30, 1995 at the new San Antonio Municipal Stadium. Approximately 125 District Seven members and their guests attended a game between the San Antonio Missions baseball team and the Tulsa Travelers. "It was an evening of fun and fraternalism," says Barry Koch, FIC, sales representative for Lodge 203, San Antonio North-Central, who coordinated the event. "It also helped us build
some good name recognition for the SPJST here in San Antonio." In addition to the fun and good times, one dollar from each ticket sold went to benefit the SPJST Scholarship Fund. "We're planning other family-oriented events like this," Brother Koch says, indicating that a Dallas Cowboys football game and San Antonio Spurs basketball game were in the works.
