Czech Republic revisited

Things are looking better all the time

By Jerry Dressler During the Russian occupationof Czechoslovakia, several of us made a trip to see our cousin in Brno. We saw 1,000 cement mixers and only two were operating. In July of this year, we again made our fourth trip to the Czech Republic and saw the same thousand cement mixers and only two were idle.

Across the street from my cousin's home was a town house with a scaffold that was installed about 20 years ago.

This was in 1988 and the scaffolding was rotten. This time when we visited, the scaffold was removed and the home was renovated and looked beautiful and new.

These are the changes taking place in the Czech Republic today. Before, all building material was being delivered to Russia and the home owner and churches never received material. There are many new homes and commercial buildings under construction and the economy has improved greatly. You notice this in the exchange of American dollars as before it was 32 to 1 and at present it is about 25 to 1. The crown (dollars) is gaining on the market.

Food was always plentiful for the Czechs, but this has improved considerable. I can remember going to the produce square on our first visit and there were only a few booths and bananas were always hidden under the counter. But now the square is full of vendors and people shopping.

The Czechs are a very religious people and each village regardless of size has a large church in the middle of town. Even

many younger people are attending church as before the Russians frowned and made it difficult for the younger people to attend. We attended an evening mass in a small village and it was filled to capacity and there were at least ten alter boys assisting in their services. The music and singing is beautiful and reminds me of the time when I was about 12 years old in El Campo and Czech services were held there.

There is a great influence of tourists in the CzeCh Republic. The Germans outnumber others as they are nearby and take advtintage of the low cast. of a vacation in ti-,e Czecl-. Republic. Foia schooner of beer is about 30 cents compared to about $2.50 in Germany or Holland. An up-to-date hotel room is about $40 to $50 compared to $100 to $150 in Austria. During the festival week in Roznov, we counted more than 100 Texans attending the activities and believe it or not, I met a family that lived only a few blocks from our home in Sugarland. The group from Texas represented the P.O.L.K. of A. dancers and they received a lot of attention. Also, I want to mention that I counted two relatives of mine from Texas and California.

The Czech Repuhlic is the place to take a vacation now as everything is reasonable and the streets and highways are very good and a large number of Czechs speak English. English is again being taught in schools The Czechs are very friendly and try to please everyone who comes from Texas.

SPJST Insurance Makes Good Sense Good information provides the basis for effective communication. Effective communication leads to effective decision making and that makes good sense for everyone.

Officers Meet with A.M. Best

Supreme Lodge officers met on Friday, August 18, 1995 with two representatives from the A.M. Best Company to review the Society's rating.

Founded in 1899, the A.M. Best Company is generally regarded as the nation's leading provider of insurer ratings. For a number of years, the SPJST has had an "A Excellent" rating.

According to Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar, the Best Company has changed its rating analysis and is now actively visiting the headquarters of companies that they rate. Some of the areas discussed were fraternal programming, insurance marketing, mortgage lending and investments.

Supreme Lodge officers attending the meeting included President Howard Leshikar, Vice President Leonard Mikeska, Secretary-Treasurer Lanita Anglin, Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas and Legal Advisor Sidney Kacir.

"It was a very good meeting," says President Leshikar. "I believe that we all have a much better understanding of the criteria that the Best Company looks at when applying their rating to a company." During their day-long visit, the two A.M. Best representatives also observed Home Office operations, visited with staff and toured the SPJST museum.

A.M. Best ratings are generally issued in the late spring.

Preservation of the Czech and Moravian Heritage — A Vision

District Two Fall Fun Day September 17, 1995 at Lodge 29, Taylor

I agree with the many people who feel that we should have a Czech Cultural Center in Texas, and I agree with Robert Janak of Beaumont that the facility should be more than just a library or museum. If we are going to preserve the Czech and Moravian traditions, history, and culture in Texas we will have to have something that goes beyond compiling family histories and holding Czech festivals. We will have to have a first class cultural facility accessible to the general public.

Before any kind of cultural center can he planned, designed, or built, there must he vision coupled with determination on the part of the planners and facilitators.

Vision is more than an idle dream; it is confidence in a possibility fueled by desire. A Czech Cultural Center cannot become a reality unless those who see a need for it and have a true desire to see it built have a vision for its purpose and future: You can dream dreams all you want to, but to accomplish them you must have vision to couple possibility with reality.

If, and assuming there is a need or sincere desire on the part of Texas Czechs and Moravians to build a cultural center, where will the money come from? Who will foot the bill? The vision of a Czech Cultural Center must go beyond the dream stage, beyond site acquisition and construction. It must include plans to finance the operation and maintenance of the completed facility. It will cost money to maintain it, pay the utilities, keep it

clean, and pay the necessary hired help. I see no alternative but to make it a selfsustaining facility. The operating and maintenance funds would have to come from rental and/or user fees.

I feel that a non-profit organization or foundation should be established to oversee the planning of the facility and to collect and hold the necessary funds for site acquisition and construction. The same organization or foundation should, after construction is completed, continue to exist and supervise the operation and maintenance of the facility,. including hiring of the necessary personnel.

Selection of the site for the facility will be of utmost importance. In my opinion, the site should he somewhat close to the traditional center of the Czech and Moravian population. It should be easily accessible from main highways such as 1-10 and 1-35, Highway 290, and State Highways 77 and 71, perhaps somewhere close to LaGrange.

If this sort of project is undertaken, it will not only require the support and contributions of individuals, it will require the financial aid and support of each and every Czech or Moravian based organization in Texas.

There was only one thing I didn't agree on and this has to do with many restaurants and hotels charging the locals half prices compared to the regular prices that we paid. The reason for this was that the tourists are usually better financially and the citizens are not.

All in all, we enjoy making trips to the Czech Republic and I would recommend them to everyone.

You find many McDonalds which are very popular and also K-Mart in Brno has a four-story building. Many of the movies are from the states and are dubbed in Czech. Even the television programs are from the states and it sounds funny to hear Mickey Mouse speaking Czech.

Dear District Two Members, This is a reminder that the District Two Fall Meeting will be held on Sunday, September 17, 1995, at Taylor SPJST Lodge 29 in Taylor, Texas.

The day will begin with registration starting at 1 p.m. The District Youth Club will meet at 1:30 p.m. and the adult meeting will start at 2 p.m. The games will begin shortly following the business meeting and last until 4:30 p.m. Door prizes and announcements will be made at 4:30 p.m. along with raffle winners and winners in the youth club silent auction.

The evening meal will be served at 5 p.m. and will cost $1 per person.

Like last year, 20 free tickets for games will be given to each person who registers by 2 p.m. Those who register after this time will not receive free tickets. Extra tickets will be available at the cost of ten for $1.

Contest Guidelines 1. The SPJST Kolache Baking Contest is open to all SPJST members of nonprofessional status. Non-professionals are considered those who do not sell. kolaches through a bakery or other establishment.

2. Kolache must be made from scratch, using yeast dough.

3. Entries must consist Of six average size kolache of the same filling on a diSposable tray or plate.

4. Kolache entries must be• made by one person, no team entries.

5. All kolache may be sold - after the event and proceeds will be donated to the district fund.

6. Winner must he present at the announcement of awards.

7. The first place winner can not compete the following year, but may compete the years after. Example: if winner in 1993, you will not be eligible until 1995.

QUILT CONTEST RULES 1. Quilt top must he made by an individual.

2. May be pieced or applique.

In conjunction with the social, there will be several contests that members may wish to enter. The following contests will be held if there are sufficient entries: Needlework, Quilts and Kolaches. Rules may be obtained from your lodge, district or state fraternal activities coordinator.

We have had several previous fall social meetings and all have been a success due to your assistance. We can have another successful meeting with your participation and contribution. We hope to see as many of you as possible on September 17 in Taiton.

District Seven Presents Spring Meeting Minutes April 30, 1995 The District Seven Spring Meeting was held on April 30, 1995. The meeting was hosted by Lodge 79, Corpus Christi at SPJST-Sokol Hall.

The meeting was called to order at 11 am. by President Jerry Sijansky. Anna Marie Moss, Vice President of Lodge 79, welcomed the members and guests.

The minutes were read by Betty Jurica and they were approved as read. Sister Pauline Pavliska, District Seven Secretary, was unable to attend due to illness.

District Director Bob Bayer read the names of the deceased members since the last meeting. They were: Lodge 26, Skidmore: Milly Anna Duge, Polly Ann Trial; Lodge 79, Corpus Christi: Alma A. Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar talked about the sales representatives incentive program that offers a range of incentive awards. This is the second year of this program. In 1994, there were 34 lodges that participated in this program. This year, there are 57 lodges. We are hoping that by 1997, all lodges will participate. The government is looking over our shoulders and the SPJST is keeping track of two deals in the legislature. The IRS is examining the fraternal side for the first time, such as LIT and district camps, district YADs, youth clubs and State YAD. Checks were presented to the hosting lodge, district expenses and the youth fund.

Brother Bob Bayer reported that six lodges made the incentive program. The 1994 quota was $2.4 million. The 1995 quota is $2.5 million. The district has met its quota on April 30, 1995. On July 30, 1995, District Seven members are invited to SPJST Family Night at the new San Antonio Missions Baseball Club for low cost family entertainments. From each ticket, $1 will benefit the SPJST Scholarship Fund. Lodge 203, San Antonio North Central is sponsoring this activity. Brother Barry K. Koch, FIC, Sales Representative, informed all present at the District Seven Meeting.

Susan Bohnenberger, District Seven Youth Counselor, introduced the youth leaders and their assistants. They are: Glenda Elzner and Patricia Johnson from Lodge 79; Betty Jurica and Kathryn Marek from Lodge 117; Theresa Haag and April Haag from Lodge 185; and Liz Bielefeld and Sheryl Morrisey from Lodge 107. Merit points have been increased to 1000 points. District YAD is July 9 in Floresville. Camp is July 25-28.

State YAD is August 5 and 6. The camp activity will be "Christmas in July." In 1996, try-outs will be held for Mr. and Miss SPJST for young people ages 18 to 22 years. The winners will be presented at the 100-year anniversary of the SPJST. District YAD for 1996 will be held in New Braunfels.

Pauline Beyer of the District Seven Insurance Committee introduced Jim Wiest, sales representative for District Six and Seven. He stated that Modterm, a ten-year renewable and convertible insurance is the best policy on the mar-

Monta Foster of the finance committee stated that no action was necessary to increase salaries of officers of the Supreme Lodge. There is a new manager for S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 2 in Needville, Texas. Everything is going all right.

Betty Jurica of the Publication Committee reported that everything is fine at this time.

Pauline Beyer of the Audit Committee stated that all the books were found to be in order.

Lodge 18, Elgin Reports on August Meeting Lodge 18, Elgin met on their regular meeting day on August 15 at the lodge.

Thirty sisters and brothers were present.

The meeting was called to order by President Dollie Hajda, who lead the group in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Members stood in silence for a prayer for their deceased and sick brothers and sisters. They offered a prayer for a speedy recovery for Fraternal Activities

Coordinator and Vice President Leslie Gustafson who is in Round Rock Hospital. "Get well, Brother Leslie, we need you in our coming months."

Roll call of officers was answered by Secretary Agnes Eschberger and Treasurer Alice Kovar. Absent were FAC Vice President Leslie Gustafson, Youth Leader Dale Kessel and Assistant Youth Leader Ruby Bowen.

Secretary Agnes Eschberger read the lengthy, complete minutes from the July meeting. They were approved. Treasurer Alice Kovar gave the financial report and the bar report, due to the absence of Vice President Leslie Gustafson.

Wednesday, August 30, 1995—VESTNIK/5 Committee reports were heard from Gladys Mogoney (ticket sales), Esther Liardon (membership), Irene Helgreen (house committee), Artie Monson (entertainment), and Bill Schmidt (bar). All reports were approved.

Under old business, cleaning and paint projects are coming up on September 5 and 6. The days are getting closer, so I hope all members are making plans to he with us to get these projects done. Please bring old rags, towels, pails and gloves. Also, if you can spare some painting items, please bring them.

Much discussion concerned the big day on October 22, 1995—the Burning of the Note. There were committees appointed in the July meeting, but you members who have not been contacted, please volunteer to help this group as we need all lodge members to take part in this celebration. There will be two more meetings on September 17 and October 17 before the big day, so please be present.

One main item that we should keep in mind is that a catered meal will be served at noon (from 12 to 1 p.m.) on this "Burning of the Note" event on October 22, 1995. We are encouraging all members to bring desserts for our sweet table such as kolaches, pies, cakes, bars, cookies, puddings, coffee cakes, etc.

There is a limited number of tickets on sale, so please get your ticket in advance. Members are selling tickets, and tickets will also he sold at all upcoming dances. Do not worry about the seating—we have plenty.

In other business, President Dollie Hajda asked about the group upkeep.

She stated that Leslie Gustafson and Oscar and Irene Helgreen have been devoted, but steps need to he taken to get this to a responsible party as it was too much for these three members. After much discussion, President Dollie asked members to appoint Thomas (Soc) Ries to he the foreman. Members all agreed.

Brother Jim Mogoney will help with his farm equipment.

Thank you, Leslie, Oscar and Irene, for the job you have been doing in this hot weather. Evelyn Gustafson, thanks for cleaning the kitchen.

In other business, President Hajda is to contact the Supreme Lodge on "No Smoking" which needs to be enforced in the lodge. As all of us know, second hand smoking is hurting those of us who do not smoke. Some folks are subject to smoke allergy and cannot enjoy the company of those of you who smoke.

The discussion of the kitchen to be open on the battle dance and Polka Fest was discussed. President Hajda is to contact the previous member who was in charge of the kitchen so that others interested know what to do. The kitchen on the August 13 Polka Fest was a big success due to volunteer members Jack Eschberger, Ben David, Arthur Weisner, Thomas (Soc) Ries and Johnnie Hajda.

Lodge 18 would like to thank everyone who came out to the Polka Fest on August 13. Members are always happy to see so many old friends and especially new ones. Thank you, Millie from Oklahoma and your sister, for being with us. Come again soon.

Karel Jonas, No. 28, East Bernard o Meet September 10 Lodge

Dear Members, East Bernard's Lodge Karel Jon g will hold its ninth monthly meeting of this year on the second Sunday, September 10 at 2 p.m. in the meeting room at 106 Leveridge Street.

The standard order of business will govern the agenda which will be open to any business needing immediate attention.

At this time, it is unknown if any special fare is scheduled for the fraternal hour luncheon but it is believed that it will he the same as in the August meeting.

August Meeting On August 13, the second Sunday, the monthly meeting convened at the set time and had a quorum present. There were no questions or corrections to any reports which were accepted as given. Since there was no old or new business, the meeting adjourned early.

Brother Jim Wiest, Field Manager for Districts Six and Seven, gave a short recitation on the membership drive and encouraged participation.

Sister Jessica Kelner, our youth member, showed the members the trophy she won on August 6 at the State Youth Achievement Day in Temple.

A varied fare for the fraternal hour luncheon was well-supplied by the members. Enough was had to have seconds.

38, Smithville to Host Dinner and Auction September 10 Lodge

Lodge 38, Smithville will hold a dinner and auction at the SPJST Hall in Kovar, Texas, on Sunday, September 10, 1995. The dinner will consist of fried chicken and stew with all the trimmings.

Plates will be $4.50 each and $2.50 for children under age 12. The dinner will begin at 12 p.m. and the auction at 2 p.m.

47, Seaton Reports on August Meeting

Lodge

President Calvin Skrabanek called the meeting to order on Sunday, August 13 at 2 p.m. Flag Bearers Janet Baca and Crystal Bartek brought in the flags and lead the Pledge of Allegiance to the U.S. flag.

A moment of silence was observed in memory of Sister Bessie Julia Jez, 93, who passed away on Wednesday, July 26 in a Temple hospital. Last year, she was the recipient of a 75-year pin at our lodge.

That was a long time of being an SPJST member. Sincere sympathy to the surviving family and may she rest in eternal peace. She shall be missed.

Visitors welcomed were Elvern Frenzel and Freddie Schroeder. Please come again.

On the sick list of hospitalized patients Were Brothers Frank Dukatnik and Don Motl and Sisters Linda Pechal Machicek and Barbara Mihatsch Brenek. These two ladies were in the hospital for blessed events, a son and a daughter, respectively.

Congratulations to Andy and Linda, parents of Joshua Andrew Machicek and to Clarence and LaVerne Pechal, grandparents for the first time. Also congratulations to John and Agnes Machicek of Shiner, the other grandparents of Joshua.

Congratulations to Eugene and Barbara Brenek on the birth of a daughter after three sons, who welcomed baby sister Christina Lee Ann to the family.

Congratulations also to grandparents Edward and Lucy Mihatsch and Dionys and Marietta Brenek. May these youngsters grow and become our members in the near future.

My mother, Theresa Chlapek, had received a birthday card on her 94th birthday from the lodge. Thanks for remembering her on her special day.

Sister Dolores Skrabanek read the roll call of officers, trusters and sales representatives. She also read the minutes of the previous meeting held on July 2 and they were approved as read.

New members accepted into the lodge were Leon Jezek, Sr. and Clayton Pick.

Correspondence included thank-you notes from the families of deceased members Sister Bessie Jez and Brothers William Pausewang and Gary Allen Marek acknowledging the wreaths of flowers sent to their loved ones for the funeral services. Also, a thank-you note from Clyde Black for the use of the raffle cage for an organization that he represented. The TABC is holding a meeting in which those who work the bar are to attend to acquaint themselves with new rules. Lodge 196 is going to be dedicating their new building on October 8, 1995, and were seeking donations and we voted to oblige in their fund raiser.

Board minutes were read by Secretary Edwin Vasicek. They included plans for an old-fashioned barn dance on August 26 and a Harvest Dance on October 7.

Hope you all can be present for these special dances. Watch the SPJST calendar for the many activities at Seaton Star Hall.

The officers gave their reports as did the chairpersons. First Vice President expressed thanks to all who helped with the third annual barbecue cook-off. The pit raffle was a great fund raiser in itself.

The audit committee chairman James Skrabanek gave the report of this committee.

Ginger Greger gave the youth leader's report, which included 20 members, three guests and three adults. A Halloween party is being planned for Sunday, October 29 at the Bernard Greger Farm on the Creek Road at 5 p.m. The trash pick-up is going to be already in the past when this is published but it was August 26 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. The youth club officer's workshop is also on August 26 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The site of the workshop was changed to the Holiday Inn because of the large group coming for this event. Three new members joined the youth club to replace the three youngsters who are no longer youth club members, namely E.J. Pechal, Lori Greger Hinkley and John Hoelscher.

Those who were born in August were Sisters Ruth Hanusch, Pearlie Faichtinger, Jerri Ann Kirby, Elveen Frenzel, Vlasta Hruska and Joyce Skrabanek and Brothers Edward Mihatsch, Walter Pomykal and Henry Janacek. Happy Birthday to all named as well as to my mother, Theresa Chlapek.

Also, Brother Charlie Hrachovv was 90 years old just recently. No one present was married in August.

Door prizes were given to Lee Hanusch and Albina Mikeska (Lodge 47 coffee cups) and Vallie Tupy and Edward Mihatsch (three-liter sodas).

The next meeting of the lodge will he Tuesday, September 5 because of the Labor Day weekend.

We then adjourned the meeting and enjoyed the svacina consisting of sausage, various salads and sweets. The number of people attending was small due to the change in date. Don't forget this one on Tuesday, September 5 at 7 p.m.

Here's hoping the weather cools down to where it is tolerable, maybe a good general rain would help.

48, Beyersville to Host Progressive 42 Tournament

Lodge

SPJST Lodge 48, Beyersville will host a Progressive 42 Tournament on Saturday, October 21, 1995. Registration fee is $10 and includes the noon meal, snacks and prizes.

Registration begins at 8:15 a.m. and we plan to begin playing at 9:15 a.m.

Fifteen games will be played with a time limit of 20 minutes per game. The tournament should end around 4:30 p.m.

We especially invite SPJST members but anyone is welcome. You do not need a partner as all players will draw numbers and be seated accordingly for the first round. The two winners will move to next table and split up and play with the losers who remain at that table. There will be no head table thus all winners will move.

We will use the same rules that the State SPJST uses. Also, we ask that as many persons as possible please pre-register so we can plan the food needs. But it is not a must to pre-register.

Lodge 54, West Reports on June Quarterly Meeting Vice President Terry Sefcik convened the second quarterly meeting on June 9, 1995. The Pledge of Allegiance to the flag was recited and a moment of silence was observed in honor of the following deceased members: Emil R. Hegar, who died on March 22; Henry F Grossman, who died on April 2; and John D. Emery, who died on April 17. May these members rest in eternal peace.

The minutes of the March 3 meeting were read and approved. Items of correspondence were read by Secretary Emery.

Financial Secretary Maxine Sefcik gave her report which was also approved as read. The treasurer's report was given by Treasurer Freddie Kaluza. This report was also approved as read.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Maxine Sefcik reported that the new youth leaders are Matthew Reaves and Hannah M. Uptmore. She also stated that new insurance from expired term insurance was written on Richard D. Bailey, Jr., Roger W. Galle, and David A. Kolar.

Additional insurance was secured for Jeanette J. Colley, Tyson A. Miller, Rev. Melvin L. Dornak, and Mika M. Reaves.

All of the above were written by Sales Representative Freddie Kaluza.

Additional insurance was secured for Maxine Sefcik by Lydia Marsh. Paid-up certificates are for Christine R. Cepak and Patrick W. Zahirniak in March, 1995 and James Brezina, Jr. in April, 1995.

West High School graduates are Justin Kaluza, son of Freddie and Janice Kaluza, and Chance Vrba, son of Debbie Uptmore. Conally High School graduate is Shelly D. Parma, daughter of Ray and Rose Parma of Elm Mott. Justin and

Shelly each received a $500 SPJST scholarship. Shelly also received scholarships from MCC, Connally Athletic Booster Club and a CDA state scholarship. Our congratulations to these graduates and the best for their future.

Plans were finalized for the party honoring our 50-year members. President Howard L,eshikar will present the 50-year pins.

Brother Freddie Kaluza will obtain the pictures of all of our past presidents and display them in Lone Star Hall.

A motion was made and passed to donate a $100 memorial to the West Ambulance Association in memory of our deceased president, John Emery.

Vice President Terry Sefcik introduced Brother Jerry Kucera, Field Manager of Districts Three and Four. He spoke to us about the Summer Marathon Membership Drive, and explained the drawing for monetary prizes for referrals, effective July 1.

Our next meeting will be September 8 at 7:30 p.m. State FAC Frank Klinkovsky from the Home Office will be our speaker at this meeting. This should be a very informative program and hopefully we will have a large attendance.

Jana Vaculik drew for the door prize which was won by Sherry Cockrell.

The business meeting was adjourned and Vice President Terry Sefcik introduced our Mayor and First Lady, Russ and Shirley Willsey. Mayor Willsey gave a very informative talk and held a question and answer session regarding city projects and problems. We really enjoyed having Mr. and Mrs. Willsey in attendance.

Everyone enjoyed refreshments, fellowship and food.

Dear Members and Friends, President Harold Rohde called the meeting of Lodge 80, Holland to order at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 6, 1995. He asked all to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for departed members.

Secretary-Treasurer Glen Latham read the mintues of the previous meeting and they were approved as read. Brother Latham gave all the committee reports turned in to him and were reported as doing quite well He also stated that if all goes well the loan on the parking lot could possibly be paid for by October!

New members accepted into the lodge were Hollie Boniface, Cristiin Clawson, Tanner Coates, and Dustin Weir.

Dear Members and Friends, I know that everyone needs a rest now and then but when Wednesday comes and no Vestnik comes, it sure is missed. The Vestnik takes two weeks off each year maybe due to -a contract or whatever. I hope this about the count , estern dance that will be held at Lodge 92 on Sunday evening, August 27 from 3 to 7 p.m. with Wildwood band playing was in the next issue.

I just talked to Sister Lydia Alholm and she said that Brother Buel Matthews will be put into a nursing home here in Fort Worth. Buel is not responding to the treatments due to the stroke he had a few weeks ago. Buel, we pray that you, soon will be feeling much better. Our daughter, Carol Z. Everett, is back in the hospi tal with bleeding. So far, she has had to have about nine units of blood. She is in

the Cape Canaveral Hospital in Florida.

We hope she gets well soon and is able to come home for a visit. She plans to visit in October as maybe it will not be such hot weather here.

We congratulate our lodge members, Brother Frank and Sister Theretta Praslicka on their 40th wedding anniversary. Brother Frank met Theretta on October 3, 1953, at a football game at the Diamond Hill Jarvis High School. Frank played football and Theretta was a cheerleader. After several courtships, they were married in 1955. Their children are son Bron and daughter-in-law Teri Praslicka of Irving, Texas, and daughter Kim and son-in-law Keith Bland of Katy, Texas. Frank and Theretta's grandchildren are Brianne and Brice Praslicka and Cody and Nikki Bland.

Congratulations to Brother Frank and Sister Theretta Praslicka on their 40th wedding anniversary.

Frank's mother, Ella Praslicka, had her 91st birthday in March. She is very active. She is a good bowler. Theretta's mother, Leona Stapp, was also present and she is 87 years young. She did lots of dancing.

The dinner and dance were wellattended by several friends and people Frank and Theretta work with. Risky Barbecue did the serving and the Vrazel band played for the dance. The hall was decorated very nicely by Joyce Tesar and a few of Theretta's friends. Frank has worked for the federal government for 39 years. Theretta has worked for Bell Helicopter Textron in Fort Worth for 21 years.

The Praslicka family are all 100 percent SPJST members. We wish them many years of happy and healthy married life together.

Lodge 183, Arlington Participates in Fourth of July Parade Two weeks prior to the Fourth of July, plans began to create a float for the Annual Fourth of July Parade in Arlington, Texas. Actually, Pat Sill as chairperson had already attended the monthly meetings for the last four months giving us all the information and rules we needed to participate in the parade.

Kevin Roznos donated his truck and trailer and his garage to embark on our

Wednesday, August 30, 1995—VESTN1K/7 masterpiece. None of the members that participated had any experience in building a float. So we did our best. Jeanne Roznos lined up musicians Tony Petter and Son, Brian Cepak and Adrian Wang.

There were many members that participated in making the float and they consisted of the Eugene Roznos Family; the Rudy Rejcek Family, Leon and Angie Stiborek, Annette Cepak and the Jerry LeClair Family.

On the day of the parade, we all met up at the lodge around 6:30 a.m. (give or take a few minutes) and started towards the parade which began at 9 a.m. We were number 123 (which was towards the end of the parade of 150 entrants) and finally was part of the parade at 11 a.m.

Leading our float was Pat Sill in a Czech costume riding on a red convertible donated by her daughter. Also riding in the car were Shelby Sill and her friend driving was Michael Frieri. Pat's other daughter Kelley Ratcliffe made SPJST signs for the car. Following Pat was Kevin and Gene Roznos and Marci Sanchez driving the pick up. Cathy Roznos and Lorrie Anderle kept Brandon and Nicholas Roznos, Troy and Chad Anderle and Jacob Edwards smiling and waving their flags in the back of the pick up. The musicians were on the float playing Czech music. President Jeanne Roznos, Leon and Angeline Stiborek, and Annette Cepak also rode on the float.

Michelle Roznos and Ann Pustejovsky walked alongside the float during the two and one-half mile parade route passing out SPJST flyers. We all had a fun time and came in second place in the music division.

Dear Members and Friends, It is time for our quarterly meeting of Lodge 189, Bryan-College Station. Our meeting will he Sunday, September 10 at 2 p.m. at the home of Al and Nina Quitta at 909 Ashburn Avenue in College Station.

Lodge 201, BleiblervilleNelsonville Reports on August Meeting Lodge 201 held its regular monthly meeting on Sunday, August 13, 1995, at 3 p.m. with 23 members in attendance.

Mrs. Elaine Duron, president, called the meeting to order. A moment of silent prayer was held for Mr. Alvin (Cotton) Macat and Weldon Wehring.

Roll call of officers revealed all present except the vice presidnet. Secretary Mrs. Lillie Mae Shupak read the mintues of the previous meeting. They were approved as read. All officers and committees gave their reports. All bills hand ed in were approved and paid.

It was reported that the lodge had gained six new members, namely Leigh Taylor Johnson, Chrystina Nichole Shupak, Sarta Shupak, Sutton Ken Shupak, Kimberly Rodenbeck, and Jeremy Charles Zettel. We welcome these new members.

On Saturday, September 9, 1995, beginning at 9 a.m. there will be a general clean-up at the hall's inside premises and outside. We would certainly appreciate if you can come Out to help.

Sunday, Setpember 10, 1995 is the next regular meeting. It will he real special. All members receiving their 50-year pins will be presented their pins at this meeting. The meeting will begin at 3 p.m. Sandwiches and drinks will be furnished. Lodge members are asked to bring sweets.

Tentative plans were made to have a public celebration on Sunday, October 22, 1995. This will be a chicken fried steak dinner with trimmings, along with one free drink, coffee or tea. A bake sale will also he held. Members are asked to bring desserts for the bake sale. Price is $5.50 for adults and $2.75 for children.

New Czech Passenge Lists Available Never before published, Czech Immigration Passenger Lists, Volume VI is now available. After years of painstaking research, over 35,000 Czech immigrants who arrived in New York between 1881 and 1886 and in Galveston between 1880 and 1886 were identified. This was done by reviewing and abstracting over 60 rolls of National Archives microfilm.

In the case of Galveston where no National Archives records exist for this time period, contemporary newspaper accounts were used as sources. This book includes an alphabetical listing of these Czech immigrants giving their names, age, place of origin, date of arrival, name of ship, and destination.

There is also a discussion on sources of immigrant ship data and pictures.

As Robert L. Skrabanek learned during his youth in the rural community near Snook, being Czech was a privilege to be cherished. In his popular book We're Czechs, he describes a way of life that has largely passed but a community spirit that

lives on.

We're Czechs was first published in 1988, and it has now been reprinted for the third time, for a total of more than 5,500 copies in print. (Although that figure may sound small, most university press books have average life sales of little more than a thousand copies.) Skrabanek's book offers readers a sense of that Czech community spirit, which was supported and strengthened attending worship services held in the Czech language, choosing friends and spouses from the Czech community, setting up cooperatives and fraternal organizations, working the land in traditional ways, baking kolaches, and dancing the polka.

The title of the book comes from a phrase Skrabanek often heard among his neighbors in the Snook Czech community back in the 1920s: "We're Czechs, they're Americans." It suggested, Skrabanek writes, "that we were a cut above the other white people who spoke English only and lived on small farms near our community.

Even though the phrase was used frequently, it had its most lasting impression on us when one of us, perhaps in a moment of either forgetfulness or just pure daring, worked up enough courage to raise a question about something Papa had decreed should be done."

Reviewers praised the book when it came out, and the book received an award from the San Antonio Conservation Society, which annually recognizes books that best document life and history in Texas.

Skrabanek is professor emeritus of sociology at Texas A&M. He earned his Ph.D. with a dissertation on the Czech community of Snook. Entombment was in Peaceful Gardens Memorial Mausoleum.

Rosary was at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 12 in Englunds Funeral Service Chapel with Rev. George Roney officiating.

Mrs. Macha died Monday, July 10, 1995, at her son's residence in Woodrow.

She was born May 30, 1896. She married August Macha on January 15, 1917. He died in 1956. She was a member of San Ramon Catholic Church.

A son, Edmond, died in 1990, and two daughters, Georgia Carroll and Evelyn Macha, preceded her in death.

Survivors include two sons, Felix of Woodrow and Robert of Marlin; two brothers, Milton Bartos of Seymour and Bedrick Bartos of Lubbock; three sisters, Albina Macha of Lubbock, Emma Foytik of Damon and Eula Kocurek of Seymour; and 20 grandchildren.

Edith Bartos, 76, of Lubbock, passed away Friday, June 23, 1995, in St. Mary Hospital.

Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m.

Monday, June 26 in St. Elizabeth's University Parish with the Rev. John O'Dea, associate pastor, officiating.

Burial was in Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Resthaven Funeral Home.

Rosary was at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 25 in St. Elizabeth's University Parish.

Mrs. Bartos was born December 3, 1918, in Bomarton. She married Bedrick Bartos on August 17, 1937, in Haskell.

She was a member of the St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church, the SPJST and the KJZT, and she was a former Catholic Daughter.

She was secretary/treasurer for Aluminum Metal Products Inc. A daughter, Patricia Bartos Mitchell, died December 5, 1988.

Survivors include her husband; a son, Jim of Lubbock; a daughter, Theresa Drewell of Lubbock; two brothers, Charles Pribyla of Bomarton and Gene Pribyla of Dallas; three sisters, Sally Capazello of Youngstown, Ohio, Elsie Heavin of Springfield, Missouri, and Geneva Fetch of Rhineland; and seven grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Joe Pribyla, Tim Orsak, John Woelfel, Brian Morris, David Drewell, Stephen Drewell and Bill Drewell.

of Sympathy We, the members of Lodge 32, Victoria, wish to express our most sincere sympathy to the family and friends of our departed lodge sister, ALICE VIRGINIA (CYKALA) REID, 71, of Victoria, who died Sunday, August 6, 1995.

She was born July 18, 1924, in Hungerford, Texas, to the late Charlie and Amelia Sopacek Cykala. She retired from the purchasing department of Victoria Bearing and Industrial Supply Company after having served 26 years.

She joined Lodge 142 in Houston on November 7, 1946, and later transferred to Lodge 32.

Survivors include three daughters, Dodie Halderman of Humble, Andrea McMichael of Trinity, and Ruby Weitzel of Victoria; two grandchildren; and one sister, Ann McIntyre of Houston.

Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. on August 8 at Rosewood Funeral Chapel on Mockingbird Lane. Services were at 1 p.m. Wednesday, August 9 at the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Gordon Spong officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery in Victoria.

Pallbearers were Larry McMichael, Al Halderman, Rawley Wilson, David Veselka, and Angus Halderman.

She was born on December 18, 1896, in Lavaca County to Robert and Annie Mahac Schumaker. She married Willie C. Tesch on September 28, 1915, in Sublime. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 16, Bila Hora and a member of the Sublime Zion Lutheran Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Lillian Walters of Hallettsville and Evelyn Criswell of Sheridan; a sister, Emilie Tesch of Hallettsville; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband on November 30, 1972; a son, Marvin Tesch; a sister, Emma Zarnba; a brother, Eddie Schumaker, two grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Services were conducted in the Zion Lutheran Church in Sublime with the Rev. Albert Flathmann officiating.

Pallbearers were Bruce Walters, Billy Walters, Charles Tesch, Ronny Jones, Royce Walters, and Maxie Tesch.

Expression of Sympathy On behalf of all the members of Lodge Vytrvalost, No. 138 in Ganado, we extend our deepest sympathy to Eugene and Paul Vesely on the death of their dear mother, SOPHIE 0. VESELY, who passed away on Wednesday, July 26, 1995, after a short hospital stay in Victoria.

She was born May 9, 1903, in Schulenberg, Texas, to the late John and Rosie Orsak. The homemaker was a member of KJZT and Assumption of Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Ganado. She was also a longtime member of SPJST. Survivors are her sons, Eugene and Paul Vesely, both of Victoria; sisters, Mollie Crosby of Wharton, and Martha Zalasek of Houston; and several grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Vesely; sons, Louis Jr. and Edwin Vesely; her parents; sisters, Rosie Kosik and Angelina Repka; and brothers Ludwig Orsak, John Orsak and Frank Orsak.

Rosary was recited on Thursday, July 27 at 8 p.m. at Ganada Funeral Home.

Funeral mass was at 2 p.m. Friday, July 28 at Assumption B.V. Mary with the Rev. Arnold Anders and the Rev. Peter Higgins of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Blessing, Texas, officiating.

Memory of Victor Zemanek In

As long as hearts remember And for as long as hearts care, We never part With those whom we love so Dear Victor Zemanek was born January 7, 1915, in Needville, Texas, to Joseph and Christina Huff Zemanek. He later moved to the area of Blessing, Texas.

At age 80 years, Victor passed away on July 2, 1995, at Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City, Texas.

Victor was a member and served as an officer in our Lodge 148, El Maton. A veteran of World War Two, he was in the U.S. Navy for 12 years and was a longtime member of the American Legion Post in Blessing. Victor was a retired farmer and did a lot for our small community. He served on the Tidehaven School Board for 12 years and was also the first recipient of the Matagorda County Outstanding Cotton Farmer of the Year award in 1956.

He is survived by his wife that stood beside him for many years, Lydia Junek Zemanek. Together they had nine children, five daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Ann and Tom De Kunder, Doris and Donnie Genzer, Lillian and Dennis Chastain, Betty Jean and Darrell Crain, four sons and daughters-in-law, Victor Joe and Ginger Zemanek, Robert and Joane Zemanek, Jerry and Cindy Zemanek, and son-in-law Jim Snyer; 18 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by one daugh-

ter, Rose Marie Snyder, in 1975.

Funeral services were neld on July 5, 1995, at St. Peter's Catholic Church with the Rev. Fred Krenek officiating. Burial followed at St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery in Blessing. Pallbearers were all sons and sons-in-law.

Jerome was born September 15, 1918, in Needville, Texas, to the late Joseph and Emilie Merecka Pesak. He served with the U.S. Army during World War Two. Mr. Pesak retired from Ford Motor Company as a mechanic. He was a member of V.F.W. Post 2438 and the D.A.V. No. 72. He was also a member of SPJST Lodge 148, El Maton.

He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Iola Mae Stroud Pesak of Blessing; his daughters, Jay Cerny, Midge Fisher, Cindy Anderson and by his foster child, Gayle Otto; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Jerome was layed to rest on July 25, 1995, at St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery with military graveside services. A funeral mass was held at St. Peter's Catholic Church with Rev. Peter Higgins officiating.

Mr. Pesak was preceded in death by his sister, Lillian Hlozek, and brothers, Adolph Pesak, Bob Pesak, and Ernest Pesak.

Memory of Millie Francis Haisler In

Millie Francis Haisler of Porter passed away on July 18, 1995, at the age of 85 years, in Diagnostic Hospital in Houston.

Millie Haisler was born February 13, 1910, in Burleson County, the daughter of the late Frank and Christina Odstrcil.

On March 31, 1928, she married Louis Haisler of Tunis.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four sisters, Lydia Marek, Olga Burton, Vlasta Payonk and Rosalie Boedeker; and two brothers, Johnny Odstrcil and Frank Odstrcil.

Survivors are her daughter, Doris Clark and son-in-law, Sammie Clark of Porter; two grandsons, Mark Clark of Conroe and Neal Clark of Porter, two

granddaughter-in-laws, Terri Clark of Conroe and Harmony Clark of Porter; three great-granddaughters, Crystal and Marlee Clark of Conroe, and Geneva Clark of Porter; two sisters, Albina Haisler of Temple and Elsie Martin of Odessa; one brother, Walter Odstrcil of Porter.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 20 at Brookside Funeral Home in Houston with Rev. Robert Durham and Rev. Charles Gould officiating. Graveside services followed at Brookside Memorial Park.

Pallbearers were Mark Clark, Neal Clark, Nelson Mueller, Dean Robertson, Al Burks, and Wayne Ferguson.

Honorary pallbearer was Thomas Lowe.

Mrs. Haisler was a member of Lodge 17, New Tabor.

On November 23, 1926, she married George W. Bucek, Sr. in Hallettsville.

She was retired co-owner of Mikulenka Department Store in Hallettsville. Mrs. Bucek was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, SPJST Lodge, KJZT Society, Sons of Herman Lodge and Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Survivors are two daughters, Lois Rita Gullette of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Patsy Pagel of Houston; two sons, George W. Bucek, Jr. of Yoakum and Laddie K. Bucek of Hallettsville; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband on June 12, 1989, her parents, and three brothers, Eddie Mikulenka, Jaro Mikulenka and Julius Mikulenka.

MRS. ADOLPH (WILLIE MAE) VOLCIK, who passed away on July 2, 1995, at her residence in West.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on July 5 at the West Brethren Church with the Rev. Robert Holadav and the Rev. Lawrence Junek officiating. Burial followed at Chapel Hill Memorial Park in Waco.

Mrs. Volcik was born August 8, 1921, in Cottonwood, the daughter of August and Anna Kocian. She attended the old Cottonwood school. She married Adolph L. Volcik on October 14, 1940, in West.

She was a housewife and homemaker. She was co-owner of the Friendship Cafe in West from 1948 to 1980. She then worked for the Czech-American Restaurant in West for several years. She was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Ladies Auxiliary and the SPJST Lodge 54 since January, 1946. She was also a member of the West Brethren Church.

She is survived by her husband, Adolph L. Volcik of West; one son, Larry Volcik and his wife, Dody, both of Waco; one daughter, Jaydean Willis and her husband, Wilburn, both of Waco; four brothers, Albin Kocian, Bernard Kocian, August Kocian and Walter Kocian, Jr., all of West; two sisters, Maddie Kocian and Mrs. Floyd (Irene) Wolf, both of West; three grandsons, Terry Barton and his wife, Susan, of Waco, Darryl Barton of Abbot and Ryan Volcik of Waco and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Terry Barton, Darryl Barton, Ryan Volcik, Harry Volcik, Floyd D. Wolf, Erwin Junek, Daniel Dieterman and John Holecek.

Memorials may be made to the Community Hospice Program in care of Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center in Waco or to the West Brethren Church.

Rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m. July 7 by the Rev. Melvin Dornak in Kotch Funeral Home Chapel in West.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. July 8 in St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West with the Rev. Ed Karasek as celebrant. Burial followed in St. Mary's Cemetery near West.

Mr. Cepak was born February 18, 1943, at Chatt in Hill County and he had lived Hill County most of his life. He graduated from West High School in 1962. He married Evelyn Slovak in 1966

at Abbott. Mr. Cepak had been employed at Nemecek Bros. in West for the past 20 years. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in West, the Knights of Columbus Council No. 2305, the KJT Society No. 31, the SPJST Lodge 54, having joined the Society on July 5, 1972, and the Czech Heritage Society.

Mr. Cepak is survived by his wife, Evelyn of Route One, Abbott; one son, Paul Cepak of West; two daughters, Veronica Cepak of Fort Collins, Colorado, and Christine Cepak of Waco; one brother, Marvin Cepak of Waxahachie; one sister, Rose Marie Hlavenka of Spring; and a brother-in-law, Robert Pavelka of Route One, Abbott.

Active pallbearers were David Girard, Lawrence Girard, Mark Lichnovsky, Robert Hlavenka and Shannon Pavelka.

Honorary pallbearers were the employees of Nemecek Bros.

The family has requested that memorials be made to the West Volunteer Ambulance Association.

ELDOM "E.D." URBAN, who went to be with the Lord after a courageous battle with cancer. He passed from this Earth at his home on Wednesday, August 2, 1995, at the age of 70 years. E.D. was born on January 17, 1925, in Rowena to Charlie J. and Rosie Batla Urban.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Friday, August 4 at the Wall Brethren Church with the Rev. Tommy Tallas of Wall and the Rev. John Baletka of Caldwell officiating. Burial followed in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Arrangements were by Johnson's Funeral Home.

E.D. attended Lowake Elementary School and graduated from Paint Rock High School. He married Martha Ann Landgraf in Miles on October 19, 1950.

They lived near Veribest on a farm. E.D. was a member of the Wall Brethren Church, having served on the board of elders. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 160, San Angelo.

E.D. is survived by his wife, Martha Ann Urban; one sister, Ida Chlapek; two nieces, Sharon Joy Waggoner and Charlyn Ocker; two great-nephews, Mark Waggoner and Douglas Ocker; and one great-niece, Lisa Ocker, all of San Angelo; one sister-in-law, Pat Urban Tomlinson of Lowake; his mother-in-law, Nelda Landgraf of Christoval; and eight godchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one nephew.

As long as hearts remembers and for as long as hearts care, We never part with those whom we love so dew: James R. Dornak was born September 20, 1926, in Gonzales to the late Method and Mary F. Lizner Dornak.

Mr. Dornak was a member of Lodge 148, El Maton. He was co-owner of J.J. Auto Service and a member of Knights of Columbus No. 2490. James was also a Veteran of the Army.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Novak Dornak; daughters, Jayme Kana of Bossier City, Louisiana, Dana Sternadel of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Angela Dornak of Honolulu, Hawaii; sons, John Dornak of Katy and James Dornak, Jr. of Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina; one sister, Annie Miculka of El Campo; brothers, Johnnie Dornak of Midfield and Ed Dornak of Blessing; and 12 grandchildren.

Services were held at St. Phillips Catholic Church with the Rev. Frank Lenz officiating. James was laid to rest at Garden Memorial, Holy Cross Memorial Park.

Svoboda - Cabla Family Reunion The 19th Annual Svoboda-Cabla family reunion will be held Saturday, October 14, 1995, at the Seaton Community Center beginning with registration at 10 a.m.

The meal will be served at noon. Each family is asked to bring a vegetable, salad or dessert. Barbecued beef and fried chicken is being provided as well as bread, drinks, cups, plates, forks, knives and spoons. To cover costs of the reunion, there will be a meal charge of $2 for adults and 75 cents for children under age 12.

After lunch, there will be a short business meeting followed by games of bingo, dominoes, cards, horseshoes, etc.

Czech Language Instruction Alief Evening School to Offer Czech Class Alief Evening School under auspices of Alief Independent School District is again offering a conversational Czech course right after Labor Day at Hastings High School. The location of the school is between Bellaire Boulevard on the south and Alief-Clodine on the north, on the southwest side of the intersection of Cook Road and High Star Drive in the community of Alief in Southwestern Houston.

The first lesson of this 12-week course, designed to develop basic skill in the Czech language wherever it is spoken, will be on Wednesday, September 6, 1995, and henceforth once a week, always on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuition, set by the school, will be $49 and the instructor will be again John J. Karas of Houston.

Post scriptum: Studies of Czech and classes of the same are vitally important in perpetuation of our national heritage as they bring forth the increased ethnic awareness of all involved CzechAmericans. Everyone knows that the

advantages of learning another language are a hundredfold, and the fact that Czech belongs to the Slavonic languages (largest group of the European languages) adds to the value of the Czech language.

Knowledge of Czech is also a halfway step towards the learning of other Slavic languages. Czech is, according to the survey done by the Texas Educational Agency of Austin in the early seventies, the third language of Texas, after English and Spanish.

Now when our Old Country is finally free, the knowledge of Czech would be especially useful to the thousands of visitors to our beautiful ancestral land.

Language Class at Spring Branch Westchester Education Center

Czech

Czech language instruction will be offered again this fall at the Westchester Education Center of the Spring Branch Independent School District.

This semester, Czech I, the more basic class will be taught. Czech I is designed for students who have minimal knowledge of the Czech language and will focus on basic grammar and conversational elements. It is an opportunity to establish elementary language skills in grammar, reading, writing and conversation. However, depending on the skill level demonstrated by the students, adjustments in difficulty will be made.

The Czech I class is a 12-week course starting on September 12, 1995. It will

meet on Tuesday of each week from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Westchester Education Center.

Registration for the course will begin on August 21, 1995. The registration schedule can be obtained by calling the Westchester Education Center. Tuition for the course is $60 plus $5 registration fee.

The Spring Branch Westchester Education Center is located at 901 Yorkchester, Houston, Texas 77079.

Branch Community Center to Offer Czech Classes

Spring

Czech culture and language conversation classes are again offered at Spring Branch Community Center on Tuesdays from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Karel Sicner, noted expert in these subjects, is the instructor.

Classes are ongoing and interested persons may join at any time. The focus of these classes is honing conversational language skills as opposed to textbook grammatical studies of the Czech langauge.

This program is free and open to the public as part of Harris County Precinct 4's commitment to its residents. Spring Branch Community Center is a Harris

Dear Vestnik Readers, Hello! I would just like to say I am looking forward to being the new SPJST State Queen. I am going to do my best to represent the SPJST in a positive manner.

I have come to love the SPJST and I want to give as much as I have received from it.

I would like to thank everyone who was there to support District Six in the Royalty Competition. It really meant a lot to me seeing familiar faces.

Dear Friends, SPJST Lodge 4, Hallettsville held their annual Family Day on August 13, 1995.

The youth club had a cake walk, raffle, quarter drop, and played bingo to raise money for the club. The youth also had their projects set out from District and State YADs, along with the ribbons and trophies that they won.

After dinner, the adult lodge held their monthly meeting along with several speakers. Mr. Howard Leshikar, Supreme Lodge President, and Mr. Matt Vanek, District Six Director, were the main speakers along with the $500 scholarship recipient, Jeff Appelt from Hallettsville. After the meeting, the youth performed individual and group talents from YAD. District Six Youth Counselor Marcy Dorotik was present at the youth club meeting. She told us about the various activities approaching in the district.

With everything finished, the youth were dismissed for the rest of the day.

The Lodge 4, Hallettsville Youth Club would like to thank all of the people who contributed to the club and made the day possible.

This was my third year to go with you all. The first year, Ann Richardson and I really did not know what to expect, but you guys made us feel like family. The second year was a blast! Dear Readers, Well, summer is almost over.

Everyone will be back in school in a fem, short days.

Our youth club did very well at State YAD. Celia Dobecka won second place in Science and Education and Whitney Dobecka won third place in Science and Education. Christi Sparkman won third place in Constructed Items. I won third place in Handicrafts and the district scholarship.

Westfest is just around the corner. We will be baking kolaches for Westfest.

Come by our booth and try out our kolaches and the lodges' sausage sandwiches and sausage and potato boats.

Hope to see everyone at Westfest.

We are planning a trip to Six Flags in October. The date has not been set yet.

Dear Vestnik Readers, Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club had their monthly meeting on August 2. We discussed YAD in Dime Box and State YAD in Temple on August 6.

We decided on several new projects for September. These include having a float in the Burleson County Parade and an educational exhibit at the County Fair.

We are also getting ready for our Country Store on August 27 where each member is to bring ten items. Everyone is invited to visit our Country Store at the Snook Volunteer Fire Department's annual barbecue.

Our next meeting will be September 6 at 6:30 p.m.

Dear Readers, The August meeting of Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club was held at Walker Pool in Temple on Saturday, August 19, 1995. There were 16 members present and several guests and adults. W'e were happy to see such a large group.

Following a brief meeting, the Cyclone youth members and guests enjoyed several hours of swimming, slipping down slides and jumping off the diving board. Afterwards, we all enjoyed delicious pizza and snacks. It was a fun evening for everyone.

Dear Vestnik Readers, The Snook Youth Club had a meeting on August 2, 1995. I brought a friend to the meeting. We talked about having a float in the Burleson County Parade, a booth in the County Fair, and our Country Store at the Fire Department Barbecue.

I brought farm magazines and plastic grocery bags for recycling for our charity projects.

I attended State YAD in Temple on August 6. I entered my Science and Education project and I also entered the Special Category contest. It was a fun day.

9, Snook Youth Club Reports on District Camp Lodge

Dear Readers, On July 14-17, several members of our youth club attended District One Camp Val Verde. We had a lot of fun.

We did crafts, went swimming and canoeing. We had cookouts at the river and had a big shaving cream fight.

Everyone was covered in white. We even got to have a water balloon fight.

Camp was great fun as always. We were very tired when it came time to go home. but we had fun and had made many new friends as well as getting to see some that we had not seen since last year.

30, Taiton Youth Club Reports onAugust Meeting Lodge

Hi, SPJST Readers! The SPJST members of Lodge 30 had their annual outing on Sunday, August 13, 1995. The day started with the members going to the Show Place III to see "Babe."

After the movies, we all met at Mr. Gatti's in El Campo for our monthly summer outing and meeting. Jeanine Dorotik called the meeting to order. Kyle Kaspar led the members in the SPJST Club Motto and Pledge. Our guests were Megan and Jake Staff and Betty Staff.

Michael Kaspar called the roll and read the minutes from the July meeting.

Brandon Drapela gave the club a report on our District Six Tour.

Congratulations was sent out to all of the district and state Youth Acheivement Day winners. Members did their first and second place group talents and individual talents for the Hillje Czech Catholic Home. They entertained the residents that had August birthdays. The residents had a great time. The members enjoyed visiting and eating birthday cake with some of the residents. That evening, a victory party was held in honor of all the members who won on the district and state YAD levels. It was held at the El Campo Elks lodge. The members swam and enjoyed eating pizza, ice cream and cake.

We are in the plans of our District Fall meeting that Lodge 30, Taiton is hosting.

It is September 17, 1995. Registration is at 11 a.m. The meal will be served at 12 p.m. and the meeting will follow at 1 p.m.

The winning group talents will perform at the Colorado County Fair on September 16, 1995.

Poems were read by Camille and Mandy Staff, Michael and Kyle Kaspar, Sarah and Bethany Dluhos, Kirby Bubela, Curtis and Chad Dorotik.

Our August birthday was Kirby Bubela. The club sang "Happy Birthday" to her.

Youth club members performed their first and second place group talents for residents of the Hillje Czech Catholic Home. The performance was in conjunction with the center's August birthday party for residents. cover. The winners were: ages 5 to 8 years: first place—Kirby Bubela, second place—Brent Gold, third place—Jon Marcaurele, other participants—Trey Staff, Mandy Staff, Brandon Drapela, Chet Dluhos and Janet Dluhos; ages 9 to 12 years: first place—Shara Dluhos, second place—Chad Dorotik, third place— Camille Staff, other participants—T.J. Drapela and Megan Marcaurele; ages 13 to 17 years: first place—Sarah Dluhos; second place—Jeanine Dorotik; third place—Curtis Dorotik.

Our charity for August was to bring a school supply. We will donate them to a school so they can give them to the less fortunate.

Our September meeting will be September 10, 1995, at Taiton Community Center. That Sunday is also Grandparent's Day. Members are to make a Grandparent's Day card and bring their grandparents to the meeting.

The meeting was adjourned and everyone enjoyed eating and socializing.

88, Houston Youth Club Reports on Gold Award Banquet Lodge

Dear Readers, The Lodge 88 youth club was once again on stage performing for our fellow lodge membership. I would like to thank Edna and Linda Wehring for asking our youth to perform at what appears to be an annual event, the Gold Awards Reception. It was held on Sunday, July 30 and despite the rain, everyone enjoyed the luau, which had to be moved into the dance hall from the gazebo area.

Our youth performed a skit to "Gilligan's Island." Our cast consisted of Gilligan (Darren Havemann), Skipper (Krystle Bender), Mr. Howell (Nicholas Havemann), Mrs. Howell (Kristen

Bender), Ginger (Amanda Godwin), professor (Darrell Havemann) and Mary Ann (Holly Hubbard).

Gilligan found a treasure chest washed ashore, and guess what everything he found inside was related to—the SPJST. Everyone seemed to enjoy the skit as much as the youth enjoyed performing for them.

88, Houston Youth Club Reports on July Meeting Lodge

Dear Youth Club Members and Readers, Our July 19 meeting began at 6:50 p.m. by Vice President Holly Hubbard.

Darrell Havemann led the Pledge of Allegiance.

We discussed the upcoming Gold Awards Party on Sunday, July 30. Each family is to call the office and advise if they are attending. The youth club will be performing a skit.

Our next social will be a back-toschool pool party on Wednesday, August 2 from 3 to 7 p.m. We may also play games later in the evening.

Mrs. Zalesky has set craft dates on August 12, August 19, September 9 and September 16 from 2 to 4 p.m.

Mrs. Linney, Youth Leader, said there may be a district trip in December to visit the youth club and have a lock-in at Lodge 84 in Dallas. Then, we will visit Six Flags for their Christmas-in-the-Park.

More information will be forthcoming from DYC Marie Stayton.

She also reminded us of District Five Family Day on Sunday, September 24 at Lodge 88. Each family is to bring a covered dish and the meat will be provided by the district. We will also have our Christmas ornament contest on this day.

We voted to sell homemade ice cream on Czech Day on Sunday, October 29.

District Four Youth Counselor Reports on Youth Achievement Day Dear Readers, District Four Youth Achievement Day was held July 15 at the St. Ambrose Hall in Wall. This was by far the most successful YAD held in District Four.

We had participants in the queen and king portions of royalty, individual talent acts, junior and senior group talent acts, and 73 craft entries. The judges stated many times that the entries were all so outstanding.

My congratulations to all of the youth who participated so well. In addition, we had the honor of presenting the Youth Achievement Award to Jeremy Block for his many years of being an active participant in all youth club activities.

Lodge

Dear Members and Readers, District Five went to camp on July 26. We went to the HEB Foundation Camp in Leakey, Texas. We left Houston

at 8 a.m. Once again, Mary was our bus driver. We also took a second bus and Ray was the driver.

While at camp, we went swimming every day, played games, went on hikes, paddled canoes and went fishing.

We went to Leakey on July 4 and had ice cream at T.J.'s Ice Cream Parlor. On the way back, we got to walk again in the river. The water felt so good to walk in.

We also had story telling, initiation and gave away the LIT shirts around the campfire. We also had a hula hoop contest.

One night, Dennis Hermis and Larry Pflughaupt sang the "Blue Skirt Waltz" for my parents and had them dance around the campfire. My parents, Jeanette and E.J. Bender, celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary on Wednesday, July 5. Also, Amanda Hermis had a birthday on another day.

The group I was in were the reindeer

and on the last day of camp the lifeguards let Derek, Arthur, Rachel, Blake, and Mark and me jump off the high cliff into the Blue Hole. It was so much fun and I wasn't scared either.

This year, Evelyn Mikeska, District Five President, came to camp. She had a lot of fun, too. We missed Mr. Hanus.

Dear Youth Club Members, Our Back-to-School Pool Party on Wednesday, August 2 was rained out, so we moved our party into the ballroom and called it a Games Party. We all brought our favorite games, cards and dominoes and had a great time.
