A Job Well Done

Wow. What a show! Congratulations to all of the young people who competed in this weekend's State Royalty COntest and State Youth Achievement Day. Based on initial estimates, a record number of more than 400 supporters turned out for the State Royalty contest on Saturday, August 5 at Lodge 24, Cyclone.

Sunday's State Youth Achievement Day at the Mayborn Convention Center in Temple likewise attracted a standing room only crowd.

All of this is a wonderful compliment to the SPJST Youth Program. Thanks to everyone involved for a job well done. A full report and results of the two-day extravaganza will appear in the Vestnik dated August 23.

The SPJST is proud to announce the July listing of "Finish Line Winners" in the SPJST Summer Marathon '95 Membership Drive. To achieve this recognition, the individuals listed furnished names of relatives, friends, neighbors and coworkers who were not previously members of the SPJST. In each case, these referrals were successfully enrolled into the Society by a local lodge sales representative.

Readers Write "A Magnificent Czech Cultural Center" Dear Editor: Occasionally one hears talk about the need to build a library to serve the Texas Czech community. In 1983, in fact, one of the programs presented at the Second Czech Symposium in Temple addressed the building of such a facility. Nothing was done, however, and the idea has lain dormant for over a decade. Until now.

Recently, there has been renewed interest in building a facility to house, preserve and make available to the public the hooks, papers and artifacts of the Texas Czech communit y. I would like to 'offer my personal ideas about how such a facility should be.

First of all, the facility in question should be more than just a library. I should he a complete cultural center which would include a first class library, an archive to preserve family documents and papers, a museum with artifacts from both Czech Texas and the Czech Republic, and an educational facility which would sponsor lectures, programs and seminars on various aspects of Czech and Texas Czech culture.

The Czech cultural center should be a project sponsored by all of the Czech organizations in the state of Texas. Every Czech organization and every county chapter and local lodge or society should participate in building it. Every member of every Czech organization in Texas should feel as if it is his facilit y, where he can go to learn about his heritage and family history, and where he can donate his own personal hooks and papers one day with the assurance that they will he well taken care of and preserved for posterity.

By its very nature the Czech cultural center should be a central part of the cultural life of every Texan of Czech ancestry. It should have a large hall where

organizations can hold statewide meetings, where dances can be held and where visiting Czech folk ensembles can put on musical performances. The cultural center should have smaller meeting rooms as well, so smaller activities can be held in conjunction with or can coincide with the larger functions. And, perhaps most exciting of all, it should have a picnic area where Texas Czech families can hold reunions and, make the center's cultural facilities a part of their activities.

Perhaps the center might even be designed to look like a Czech town square. It could be built in the shape of a "U" and the facade could he fashioned to look like rows of adjoining buildings in' different architectural styles and painted in different colors, such as one sees on the Hradcany, in Ceske Budejovice or in Moravia's Tele. Imagine visiting a library to research one's family history, walking through a museum and seeing kroje from different villages of the Czech Lands, and then sitting at a table in an old-world town square eating a kolac and drinking a inineralka. And what a perfect place a recreated Czech town square would be for an annual Czech folk life festival!

If you are like me and can close your eyes and visualize a magnificent Czech cultural center where hooks and papers are researched and studied, where Czechrelated meetings are held, where Czech and Texas Czech artifacts are preserved and displayed, where lectures, programs and concerts are given, and where festivals and family reunions are held, then make a difference and convince the Czech organizations to which you belong to join in and make this vision a reality.

Lodge 4, Hallettsville Family Day Set for Sunday, August 13 Dear Members, Our lodge met on Sunday, July 9, 1995, at the Hallettsville Youth Center with President Joe Siptak presiding. The Pledge to the flag was recited and "America, the Beautiful" was sung in English and Czech.

Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes of the last meeting which were approved.

Treasurer Helen Zahransky, Fraternal Activities Coordinator Lillie Balusek and Youth Leader Annie Vahalik reported.

It was voted by the members to apply for funds to SPJST for Czech lessons in Hallettsville.

Final plans were made for our annual Family Day on Sunday, August 13 at the American Legion Hall in Hallettsville beginning at 11 a.m. Refreshments and dinner consisting of brisket, sausage and trimmings will he served. 18, Elgin Members Prepare for Celebration Lodge

Members of Lodge 18, Elgin are getting all excited about the big celebration coming up on October-22, 1995, at the lodge home. Coffee will be served at 10 a.m. for out-of-town guests. A noon meal will be served and will consist of roast beef, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, pickles, onions, hot rolls, bread, tea, coffee and homemade desserts, furnished by all members.

A program is planned from 1 to 2:30 p.m. with the finale being the big "FLAME" of the note.

From 3 to 7 p.m. will be a big dance

by Harry Czranek with great music.

There will be a happy hour from 12 p.m. till ? Door prizes will be given for lucky meal and dance tickets.

The cost of the meal and dance is only S5 per person. Tickets are on sale by members at the door at all dances coming up in August, September and the early part of October. There is a limited number of tickets (600) so act early so you are not left out.

This is an invitation through our paper, the Vestnik, to all officers, members, friends, P.O.L.K. of A. dancers, Red and White Polk Club and all' lodges of Texas to come help us celebrate this special day.

Frank and Mary Matula Celebrate 50 Years of Marriage

Frank J. and Mary Matula, members of SPJST Lodge 4, Hallettsville, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary recently with a reception at the American Legion Hall in Hallettsville.

Hosting the reception were the honorees children and grandchildren, Henry and Marlyn Matula and children, Carol, Doris and Travis; Joe and Dorothy Schneider; Anthony and Jo Ann Matula and Leon Matula.

Frank J. Manila, jr. and Mary Svetlik were married in St. Mary's church near Hallettsville by Rev. Henry Psencik on July 17, 1945. Lorene (Trojcak) Krause, the only surviving bridesmaid was in attendance. There were approximately 275 attending the celebration.

24, Cyclone Reports on July Meeting

Dear Readers, Members of Lodge 24, Cyclone met for their regular meeting on Monday, July 10. The evening started with a covered dish dinner at 7 p.m.

President Bobby Hoelscher called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. All officers were in attendance. The minutes of the June meeting were read by Secretary Arleen Mayeux and approved as read.

Following the distribution of officer and standing committee reports, Mothers' Day Dinner Chairman Louise Zavodny presented a final wrap-up on that event.

In here report, Trustee Chairman Sherry Tyroch reported that the trustees have been making a careful evaluation of existing lodge rules, regulations and job descriptions and will continue this procedure at their August and September meetings.

Youth Club Leader Melanie Zavodny presented a detailed report on the recent activities of Lodge 24 Youth Club. The report included a summary of awards won at the recent District Two Youth AChievement Day held at Lod g e 187, Round Rock. What an outstanding performance! Congratulations to all of our young people for your efforts. For contest results, please see District Two Youth Counselor Patsy Koslovsky's letter which appears in-the Youth Letters Section of this week's Vestnik.

There was quite a lot of new business to discuss—most of it focusin g on upcoming events at Lodge 24. Members and friends, please mark the following dates on your calendars: Saturday, October 21—Casino Night Saturday, November 11—Veterans Day Barbecue Cook-Off and County-Wide Sale Day To reserve a cooking space, contact Louise Zavodny at (817) 985-2556. There will be more details on these events at the August meeting.

A fundraising project is also being planned for January of 1996. Please attend our next meetin g on Monday, August 14 for more details. As usual, we will get started at 7 p.m. with the covered dish social with the meeting starting around 7:30 p.m. Meetings generally last about an hour.

In other new business, members voted to purchase a telephone answering machine for the lodge hall. Since that decision was made, the machine has been purchased and installed.

There was discussion regarding the SPJST State Royalty Contest scheduled to take place at Lodge 24 on Saturday, August 5. It was decided that a light noon luncheon would he made available for royalty contestants, their parents and Guests.

It was noted that the following lodge Members had birthda ys in July: Barbara Macek, Meagan Ray and Trent Coots. It was also noted that Sherr y and Wayne Tyroch celebrated their anniversary in July. Congratulations to these and all other lodge members who celebrated birthdays or observed anniversaries in July.

Lodge 39, Bryan to Meet August 20 Dear Members of Lodge 39 and Readers of the Vestnik, Please be reminded that our meetings are now held the third Sunday of each month at 12:30 p.m. We have a luncheon first and then the meetings follow.

At our August meeting, barbecue will be provided by the lodge and cooked by yours truly. Each family is asked to bring covered dishes and desserts of your choice to serve with the meat.

Drinks and etc. will he provided.

We have added nice chairs for our meeting room and also chairs and a large work desk in the youth room.

Our youth members just returned from the SPJST camping trip and they said they had a great time. My grandson, Chad Everett, is ready to go again.

He hopes to be able to go next year. He told me that he made lots of new friends, especially a nice pretty girl from Caldwell. This was his first camping trip and he was reluctant to go at first. But with encouragement from our assistant youth leader Bennie Ann Roesler and his family and after packing and unpacking three times, he finally decided he would try it. By that time, the group had left so his parents drove him all the way to camp. After all of this, he had a wonderful time and is glad he went. Thanks to our SPJST for sponsoring'such an activity for our youth members. Of course, this is just one of the man y that our SPJST offers to our youth.

Also I want to thank our SPJST and our lodge members for the trip that Wade and I just returned from We also had a great trip starting on Sunday, July 9. \\e decided to travel by van for we love sightseeing. Wade loves to drive and I love to just sit back, relax, turn on good music, low-keyed and listen to the wheels rolling. We both have road rah. bit fever and I keep a suitcase ready at all times, ready to go.

We drove to Bossier. City, Louisiana.

There we visited the casinos. Then, we met some friends in Vicksburg, Mississippi, for some more casinos and dining, gambling, and dancing. We

spent the night in Jackson, Mississippi.

The next day, we drove through Alabama and Georgia. We stoped in Atlanta and then drove to Spartanburg, South Carolina. We visited all of Wade's family for three days. We also drove to Union, South Carolina, and walked the ramp where the Smith children died. This was indeed a sad place and town. The trial for Susan opened the day we were there and the news media were everywhere. However, the road to the memorial place was opened for visitors.

Next, we drove to North Carolina and spent the night on the Indian Reservation for more gambling, dining, shopping, swimming, and fishing. This is the most beautiful mountain place I have ever visited. I wished we had more time to stay there. It was unreal, just fantastic!

From there, we decided to start home.

I was getting homesick for my animals, flowers, fish and birds, etc. We came back through Nashville. Tennessee, and went to a concert at the Grand Ole Opry.

This was great! Then, we toured Graceland at Memphis, the Ozarks in Arkansas, through Oklahoma and back to Texas. I was ready to kiss Texas soil.

Of course, we hit lots of flea markets, museums, gardens, waterfalls, historical places and etc.

Due to my son-in-law's good care of e‘erything at our home and after unloading all the excess, we left the next morning for the Texas coast. We were on the road again, the sound of wheels rolling, barely cooled off from the long trip.

Thanks to everyone who helped me win this trip. especially the Home Office.

Lodge 84, Dallas Members Enjoy Trip to Bossier City Dear Brothers and Sisters, Our trip to Bossier City was a great success. Some of our group came back home happier and others came back to prepare for our next trip—knowing it will be "more successful." Stay in touch—there will be another trip in the future! On August 19, Fritz Hodde and The Fabulous Six will be playing for the dance at Lodge 84, located at 2625 Floyd in Dallas. Let's see—that gives us a week to recuperate from the picnic.

Come on out and join us. Bring your friends and introduce them to "polka and waltz dancing." They could become a member of the SPJST. Our sales representatives are available for information.

The Czech Harvesters will be entertaining you on September 16 from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. This is one of our Czech Fests. So come for a fun-packed weekend. Dance until your "tootsies" are tired and then return on Sunday, September 17 around noon time for a wonderful meal, followed by games and socializing until approximately 3 p.m.

At that time, the Al Vanek Band will play that good Czech music until 6 p.m.

Lodge 84, Dallas Picnic Set for August 13 Dear Members, What a treat we from Lodge 84, Dallas are going to have! Brother Sid and Justine Pokladnik have invited us to their lake house at Cedar Creek Lake for a Lodge 84 Picnic. This reminds so many of us of the old traditional picnic first at Vickery Park and later at the Pokladnik's farm outside of Ennis. It's been a few years, but we are doing it again.

Life is so busy for most of us that we don't always find time for fellowship and relaxing conversation. This will be a swell day for horseshoes, volleyball, swimming and music. The Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra will be there to play, as well as the German Band from our area.

The only things the members are asked to bring are lawn chairs (and a card table, if you desire), swim gear and towels. If you want to play dominoes or washers, bring them as well. Our hosts are providing a complete barbecue dinner and beverages for all to enjoy.

88, Houston Presents July Meeting Minutes Lodge

Leander Pflughaupt, Louis Roznovsky and King Hegwood presented the colors and lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

President Clara Broz thanked Tim Janak for the entertainment before the meeting. A letter from the Supreme Lodge outlining the Summer Marathon for the new members was read.

First Vice President Marie Stayton requested the Popcorn Committee take care of the flag ceremony for August.

Youth Leader Barbara Linney reported the new youth year started with 32 active members. She also reported the campers had another fun trip to HEB camp.

Chairman of the Board A.J. Stayton reported a donation was made to charity.

Janet Garcia is now a Notary Public for Lodge 88. He announced the Blue Room party is scheduled for August 13 at $12.50 per person. Call for reservations.

Gene Barcak, Kitchen Committee Chairman, thanked Victor Janak for donating the meat for the meeting. Mr. Barcak also reported that the Choral Club will perform August 15 at the Praha Feast.

Social Night Chairman Willie Wehring gave the six-month report which reflected a significant income for the lodge.

Birthday Club President Lowrina Lindemann reported 28 ladies went to the Country Harvest on June 21. Thanks to Johnny Broz for fixing the Bingo Basket for the Birthday Club.

Tom Marsh, Men's Club Chairman, reported 207 hours of volunteer work in

June and reminded everyone about Fiesta sales slips and the paper drive. Thanks to Tillie Helmcamp for her outstanding reporting to the Vestnik.

Bill Souchek, the Czech Instructor, complemented Tim Janak on his performance before the meeting. He introduced two young ladies from the Czech Republic who were guests of the Bily family.

District Five President Evelyn Mikeska thanked Marie Stayton for the invitation to camp which she enjoyed.

Famil y Day is scheduled for September 24 at Lodge 88 with a covered dish meal, youth club Christmas ornament contest, kolache baking contest, and quilting contest.

District Five Youth Counselor Marie Stayton reported that camp this year was a huge success. She thanked everyone who helped make it such a great event.

Sick members were Carl Lindemann, Pearl Hilshire, and Ann Urbanovsky. We are wishing a speedy recovery to all of these members.

Helen Hegwood, the District Five Field Representative, reported District Five maintained the number one position in the state. Victor Janak was number one for June in the number of applicants.

Jerome Ermis was number one in earned premiums.

84, Dallas Couple Cyrill and Justine Pokladnik Celebrate 61 Years of Marriage Lodge

On June 30, 1995, the children and grandchildren of Cyrill (Sid) and Justine Pokladnik hosted an anniversary reception in their home for a number of nearby friends and relatives.

Their 60th anniversary was last year, and they were in the Czech Republic for that occasion.

Their entire wedding party, except for one couple, was present for this function—even the little flower girl Lillian Kopecky, who 61 years later, still looks great.

Sid and Justine (Svoboda) Pokladnik were married on June 30, 1934, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Dallas. Throughout the years, they worked hard to build a business in Dallas, first Sid's Grocery (located next door to Rudolph's Meat Market where Sid had worked alongside his uncle for PIctured, at right, are Brother Sid and Sister Justine Pokladnik.

The couple recently celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary with a party in their home for friends and relatives.

After several decades of local lodge, district and state work for the SPJST, both Sid and Justine have left their mark, most currently in seeing all five grandchildren go through the SPJST youth programs, and now seeing their great-grandchildren participating.

Congratulations to a wonderful and fraternal SPJST couple, terrific parents, grandparents and loyal friends. Here's hoping there are many more years of happiness ahead.

Lodge 88, Houston Reports on Members' Activities It is with much sadness that I tell you I have lost a wonderful relative who was very special to me—Rose Helmcamp Michalak. She is the sister of my late husband Oscar. Rose and I knew each other for almost 60 wonderful years. I will always cherish the beautiful memories I have of her.

The Youth Achievement Day, which was held on July 23 at Lodge 88, Houston, had outstanding talent, and I congratulate all the participants. I know the winners will he listed in the Vestnik, but I want to mention our District Five Royalty, which consists of Queen Crystal Noland (Lodge 172, Pasadena), Duchess Laura Godwin (Lodge 88, Houston), King Jason Hermis (Lodge 142, Houston) and Duke Christopher Schleider (Lodge 142, Houston). Since I was not able to be there, I want to thank Mary Ann Kieschnik, Tennie Walla and Dottie Watkins for this information.

Blue Room Chairman Margaret Allbritton wants to remind you that the Blue Room party is on Sunday, August 13. Cocktails, dinner and dancing to the great music of Gus Lindemann is sure to make it a most enjoyable affair!

Jimmie Lyons and Bobby Miksch took their mothers, Fern Lyons and Della Miksch, to Las Vegas. They saw some good shows and had a great time. I think you all know Fern, the widow of "Squatty" Lyons who was our great commissioner for many years. And of course, you know Della who with Joe was a loyal worker of our lodge. I want to wish them both Happy Birthdays—Della on July 31 and Fern on September 30.

Greetings go to Annie Vala who lives at Lexington Home Center. Annie was a most loyal and great worker as was her husband, the late Emil Vala. There is no way anyone could estimate how much they helped the lodge!

A nice surprise for the members was the musical numbers before our July meeting started when the grandchildren of Evelyn and Victor Janak performed.

We all enjoyed it.

Anniversary celebrants and donors of refreshments for the July meeting were Ruth and Bob Martinak, Jan and E.J. Bender, and Mildred and Jack Holeman.

Alice and Miroslav Bily enjoyed having two lovely girls from Czechoslovakia and brought them to our July meeting.

They were Marketa Kolarikova and Michaela Tobakoa. Marketa, being at the right place and at the right time, had her picture taken with Governor George Bush!

In his report to the lodge, Board Chairman A.J. Stayton asked for a big hand of applause for Pauline Curtis, who gathers lots of newspapers and brings them to the Men's Club paper drive.

Josephine and Leander Pflughaupt celebrated a wedding anniversary recently.

Karen Monroe, bride-elect of Karl Pflughaupt, was given a beautiful shower at Lodge 88.

Rosa Lee and Tim Kostom just returned from a three-week visit in Czechoslovakia. (More details in my next letter.)

92, Fort Worth to Meet August 13

Dear Members and Friends, It sure was nice to get a break from the 100 degrees that have been around here for several days. On July 29, the temperature did not get to the century mark. It clouded up and I believe the weather man said we may get some rain.

I think it is hot over the other states also.

We should be thankful that we do not have any water shortage as tve did in the years we had the drought. So much for the weather!

In a day or so, it will he August. That means it will be time for our lodge meeting on August 13, so try to attend. That is the time to bring up ideas to improve the lodge. The bids were received for the care takers house and the trustees have been looking them over. Like any bids that are taken, some get high. The trustees will pick which one will be the best. Sometimes the lowest and highest bids are not the best. So we will do our best to get the bid that will satisfy everyone. The trustees have spent lots of time with this project and will continue to do so during the construction of the house.

One thing a reporter does not like to do is write about sickness. But it seems that we do have members that are having surgery. Sister Anna Leshikar had gall bladder surgery, and Janie (Prochaska) Allen had her wrist operated on. Vicki Gray's husband, Bill, had surgery on July 28 and he is still in the hospital.

Josephine (Jo) Prochaska will have surgery on her back on August 4.

Sister Marie Tesar had surgery on July 22 but she passed away on July 29.

Lodge 92 has really lost a very good member. She had worked many years for the good of the lodge. She and Frank Tesar were always at the door to collect

the admission. Sister Marie was one of the finest ladies a lodge could have and be proud of. Marie was a wonderful woman to her children. I remember that over 50 years ago, we used to play games at different homes but that has changed.

Television has caused us to not visit like the old times.

Tonight, Sunday, July 30, there will be a rosary for Marie and the funeral will be at Saint Thomas Catholic Church at 11 a.m. Monday, July 31. She will be greatly missed by the family as well as by all lodge members. She belonged to several other organizations and was the president of the Lodge 92, Fort Worth Ladies Circle. Marie J. Tesar is survived by her husband Frank Tesar of 56 years; two sons, Frank, Jr. and Johnny Tesar; daughters, Mary Ann Krivanek and Bernadette Holford; a brother, August Kubecka of Shiner, Texas; one sister, Stacy Kurtz of Cuero, Texas; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Marie will be missed but she is now in heaven where she may have eternal rest.

God bless her and may we all hope to be together when we are called by the Lord.

91, Crosby Sets Defensive Driving Class

Lodge

Lodge 91, Crosby, in conjunction with Harris County Precinct 2, will sponsor a defensive driving class on Thursday, August 24, 1995, at the Highlands Community Center at 604 West Wallisville Road in Highlands, Texas.

The class, taught by Chester Stasney, will begin promptly at 8:30 a.m. and end at 3 p.m. It is suggested that each person bring a sack lunch. The cost of the course is $5 per person.

Attendees must he East Harris County residents and be at least 55 years old.

Each person attending will receive a defensive driving certificate. Most insurance companies give a rate reduction to persons with course certificates. For married persons to he eligible for the insurance rate reduction, both husband and wife must attend the course.

148, El Maton Members Enjoy Lodge Barbecue

It was really great to see so many members at our annual barbecue dinner.

We had an enjoyable time and a lot of good door prizes were presented. I personally want to thank everyone who donated prizes and all of the officers for their efforts, including ordering the cards and sending them to lodge members.

Likewise, thanks to those who helped clean the hall—both before and after the event. Special thanks also go to District Six Director Matt Vanek and State Field Representative Jim Wiest, who were our guests.

I apologize for being late with this report; however, my film could not be developed. Because of that, a very big thank you goes to our President Frank W. Hahn, Sr., who had his camera.

A total of nine lodge members received 50-year membership pins. They were: Vlasta Kalisek, Johnnie L. Koch, Henrietta Krumholz, Ralph Popek, Martha Richardson, Frank Trojeak, Victor Zemanek, Raymond Balusek, and Mary Ellen Jerker. Only two of these members were able to attend our June 3 dinner.

Our next meeting will be on September 12, 1995 at 7 p.m. at Gay Lynn's home. Again, thanks to all who attended.

Hall Construction Underway at Lodge 196, Houston - Northwes

Czech Contributions to Texas Music Exhibit Running Through August An exciting new Czech music exhibit will be running through the month of August in Austin, Texas. The program is titled "Czech Contributions to Texas Music" and was produced by the Texas Music Museum. The exhibit in sponsored in part by the City of Austin, under the auspices of the Austin Arts Commission.

The exhibit, which opened on August 1 will run through Tuesday, August 29, 1995, at the Dougherty Art Center, located at 1110 Barton Springs Road in Austin. The display will be open during regular business hours. Barton Springs Road runs roughly parallel to the south shore of the Colorado River, which is just south of downtown.

The exhibit explores the history and present status of Texas Czech music and includes historical and cultural details of

Czech immigration to Texas, Czech bands, dance halls and folk songs using photographs, artifacts and descriptive information. An informative booklet as well as audio and video tapes of Texas Czech culture and music are incorporated into the exhibit.

Several Texas/Czech experts contributed time and energy to the project as advisors. Those listed and their affiliations included: Calvin Chervenka (Dallas Czech Singers), Howard Leshikar (SPJST Museum), Helen Macik (Czech Club of Dallas), Dr. Clinton Machann (Texas A&M University), Julius Tupa (Texas Polka News), Louis Polanski (Czech Heritage Museum, Fayetteville), Kevin Hannan (University of Texas, Slavic Languages Department), and Paula Van Bibber (Austin Czech Historical Association).

to Meet August 13 The Dallas Czech Club invites all interested persons to attend that organization's next business meeting and program on Sunday, August 13. Burial was in Bellwood Memorial Park in Temple.

A rosary was recited at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 4 at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Temple.

He died Sunday, July 2, 1995, near Ames, Iowa, as a result of an automobile accident.

He was born in Temple to Wilton Charles and Jeanette Sehon Marek.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Temple. He was in Boy Scout Troop 152 (Knights of Columbus), where he served as senior

patrol leader. He was a member of Order of the Arrow and held the rank of first class scout. He also had earned the religious scouting award, Ad Altare Dei, while he was a Cub Scout.

Gary Allen Marek A student at Bonham Middle School, he was a trumpet player in the band. He played baseball for the Padres in the Freshman League and was an avid fisherman and camper. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton.

Survivors are his parents, Wilton and Jeanette Marek of Temple; and three brothers, Aaron Marek, Michael Marek and Nathan Marek, all of Temple.

Mrs. Jez died Wednesday, July 26, 1995, in a Temple hospital.

She lived on the farm her parents John Josef and Anna Maruna homesteaded in what is known as Oenaville. Her father came to the United States from Dudof, Austria, in 1891, and her mother from Moravia. Their final port of docking was in Galveston and they moved to Bell County in 1893. Mrs. Jez was a homemaker and a farmer. She was a member of St. Mary's Altar Society and SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton from which she received a 75-year membership pin.

As a young homemaker, she obtained a Home Demonstration Club scholarship

to further her education in homemaking.

A trustee for many years for the Komensky School in Oenaville, she was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Survivors are two sons, Wallace Jez and Frank Lynn Jez, both of Temple; a daughter, Elizabeth O'Brien of Cloudcroft, New Mexico; a sister, Christine Lugo of San Antonio; 11 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

A rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m.

Friday, July 28 at the funeral home.

Willie was born July 31, 1909. He died at the age of 85 years. Services were at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bryan at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 26, 1995.

Burial was at Smetana Cemetery. He was preceded in death by a son Willie J. Kuder, Jr. Survivors include his wife, Eleanor Kuder (our Lodge 39 president); a daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Bob Stalling of Stafford; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Brother Willie was our 1995 Lodge 39 Treasurer. We will all miss him greatly.

of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 23, Moravia, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the family of our departed brother, AUBREY ALLEN BUCK, who passed away on July 6, 1995, at the age of 82 years, in Lavaca Medical Center in Hallettsville.

Aubrey Buck was born June 10, 1913, in Terrell, Texas, the son of George and Velma Yeager Buck. He served in the United States Navy during World War Two aboard the USS Tender Dixie in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of the Moulton VFW Post No. 971, SPJST Lodge 23, Moravia, Knights of Columbus, Farm Bureau and Ascension Catholic Church in Moravia. He was a retired retail grocer.

On November 20, 1950, he married Doraine Klapuch of Taft.

Survivors are his wife, Doraine; a daughter, Karen Jansky, and son-in-law, Johnnie V. Jansky, Jr. of Houston; one grandson, John V. Jansky, III; and two great-grandchildren, Christen and Chad Jansky.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four sisters, Ruby Buck, Mary Bullard, Pat Hooper, and Una Greenhill.

Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 7 at the Kubena Funeral Chapel.

Services were held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 8 at Ascension Catholic Church at Moravia with Rev. Brian Crookes officiating.

Graveside services were conducted by Rev. Brian Crooks and military services by the VFW Post 971 of Moulton, Texas, at the Ascension Cemetery in Moravia with Kubena Funeral Home of Hallettsville in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers were John V. Jansky, III, Gerald Klapuch, Timothy Klapuch, Richard Klapuch, Alvin Klapuch and David Klapuch.

Honorary pallbearers were Johnny V. Jansky, Jr., Ervin Pustejovsky, Johnnie Klapuch, Daniel Klapuch, James Gill, and Alvin Kohlefel.

Resolution Committee, Millie Berger Lorene Vaculik

Seaton Brass Band to Re-Activate The Seaton Brass Band, originally formed in June of 1970, is being reactivated after a few years' hiatus. The band will meet for its next meeting and rehearsal on Saturday, August 12th, at the Cyclone Corral in Cyclone, at 2 p.m. This first gettogether will last about two hours.

The band consisted of musicians from Bell County and other Central Texas communities and ranged from 15 to 26 members. Some of the band members were SPJST members.

Former members and new members are encouraged to attend and become part of the band. Members are expected to be able to sight-read and attend as many rehearsals and public appearances as possible.

Instrumentation is all brass, with some reed instruments. Music performed consists primarily of marches, polkas, waltzes, patriotic and some special numbers.

Among appearances of the band over a period of several years included the San Antonio Folklife Festival (twice), State Fair of Texas, KCENTV, Shiner Homecoming, Taylor Chamber of Commerce Celebration, Cameron Folk Festival, Temple Mall, SPJST Lodge 47 Annual Picnic, Holland Corn Festival, and a number of other appearances throughout Texas.

The group was organized by, and is directed by, Nick Morris of the Seaton Community, east of Temple.

Some music stands will be available but those attending should bring their own stands, just in case.

Instruments needed are trombones, trumpets, baritones or euphoniums, reeds (saxes, clarinets), and tubas. A drummer is already available.

Fans of the band and interested persons are invited to attend this rehearsal.

Annual Westfest Taroky Tournament

The Directors of Westfest will again host a Taroky Tournament in conjunction with the Westfest celebration. The tournament will be held at the West Community Center in West, Texas, on Saturday, September 2. The tournament is open to all interested tarok players, ladies and gentlemen, 18 years of age or older.

Entry fee will be $15 per person with registration beginning at 8 a.m. and play starting at 9:30 p.m. Play should conclude about 5:30 p.m. Kolaches and coffee will be served during registration.

Lunch is included in the registration fee and will be served at the community center. Trophies and cash prizes will be awarded to the top four players. Play will continue for all players throughout the tournament. The top four players after five rounds will be awarded first, second, third and fourth place honors.

We are proud of our Czech heritage and in order to honor the memory of our ancestors, let's all come together. Don't forget to bring pictures, family items or any data to share. We had about 87 persons attend last year and all had a good time.

The John Velky Family of California received a gift for traveling the farthest distance. Sarah Thompson received a prize for being the youngest baby present.

Dusek Family Celebration The descendants of Frantisek Dusek and Anna Motl will celebrate 125 years in Texas on Saturday, August 19, 1995.

The celebration will commence at 10 a.m. with a memorial service conducted

by Rev. Dennis Dusek in the Protestant Cemetery in Rowena, Texas.

A catered noon meal will be served in the Community Center (the old school house) at Lowake, Texas. All family members are encouraged to attend so that we may celebrate together our heritage and honor the grandparents who so long ago made great sacrifices and endured many hardships so that we could he what we are today.

Youth Letters Section District Two Youth Counselor Expresses Thanks to District Two YAD Participants Dear Readers, I want to thank each participant and all guests who made our 1995 District Two Youth Achievement Day a great success.

Participants, your talent in crafts, individual and group talent and royalty proved each of you a winner. Your time and dedication is greatly appreciated.

The same is to be said for all parents and leaders. None of this would be possible without your love and support of these fine young people.

Lodge 187, you were a great hosting lodge. To Karen Leschber, the new youth leader at Round Rock, I thank you for all of your help the weeks before YAD in contacting judges. A special thank you for all the work you did the day of YAD. I so much appreciate you and your mom, Joan Boydston, for being at the lodge at the crack of dawn to make certain all was in place before registration.

Lodge 4, Hallettsvilie Member Reports on District Six Field Trip

AWARD PRESENTATIONS were made by District Three Director Sid Pokladnik, District Youth Counselor Bessie Petr and Assistant DYC Gladys Yates.

Dear Friends, On Thursday, July 20, District Six took their annual field trip. As a youth member, I got to participate in all of the fun.

Our first stop was at Wonder World in San Marcos. Everyone had fun, but some

of us had headaches after touring the cave at a depth of more than 160 feet in the earth's crust and then elevating 110 feet into the air on the Tejas Tower. However, our trip there was not wasted. We still enjoyed the train ride through the petting zoo and the anti-gravity house.

After eating our lunch and getting on the bus, we departed San Marcos for San Antonio! There, we visited Ripley's Believe It or Not! Museum and Plaza Theatre of Wax. We all were scared and grossed out when we left!

From there. we went across the street to the first Spanish mission. It was established in 1718 as Mission San Antonio de Valero, or the Alamo. It was also the site of the famous 1836 Battle for Texas Independence. Then, we went to the River Center Mall for dinner and a boat ride on the Riverwalk.

After all of this. we still had one more stop before exiting the city. Built in 1968 and at 750 square feet, the Tower of Americas is the second highest in the western hemisphere. At the top level in the observation deck, we saw the water fountains and flowering plants down below. When we were back on solid ground for the second time, we took a group picture to savor the moment.

On the long ride home, we all expressed our feelings about the day and told scary stories or dumb jokes with other members of District Six. All in all, it was a wonderful day!

The Lodge 13, Dime Box Youth Club had our monthly meeting on July 22, 1995, at 3 p.m.

Reports were heard and approved.

I hope everyone had a great time at Camp Val Verde on July 14-17. I did and I hope those that could not go to camp this year can go next year.

The Youth Achievement Day, hosted by our lodge, was on July 23, 1995, and everyone had a good time.

Just a reminder—our youth club bake sale will be August 4, 1995, at the First State Bank in Dime Box starting at 8:30 a.m. Each member should bring two baked items, if possible.

24, Cyclone Swim Party Set for August 19 Lodge

Dear Members and Friends, Cyclone Youth Club will meet on Saturday, August 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the Walker Swimming Pool, located at 2615 North Third Street in Temple.

Following the meeting, members, parents and friends will enjoy a back to school swim party from 7 to 10 p.m. We invite all SPJST youth club members to come celebrate the end of summer and beginning of a new school year.

Dear Readers, District Two Junior and Teen Camps were held July 18-23 at Camp Val Verde.

At junior camp, we had eight leaders-intraining (LITs). Thanks to these teens for all of their help: David Koslovsky, Jason Smith, Gary Skrabanek, Erin Skrabanek, Tammy Baker, Dana Beckendorf, Jason Beckendorf and Allyson Holman.

I would like to thank our District Youth Counselor Patsy Koslovsky and her assistants, Janet Lyon and Amy Cortasie, for all of their hard work at both camps. I would also like to thank Carol Tallas for all of her wonderful craft ideas. Thanks to all of our chaperones who took time out of their schedules to enjoy a week at camp with the youth of District Two. Camp was a blast!
