A Golden Opportunity Over the last few weeks, several references have been made in this column to the 1996 SPJST State Convention in Arlington, Texas. That's all well and good, but something also needs to be said about a very important coming event at your local lodge-the annual meeting.

As stated in our Society's By-Laws, local lodges are to conduct annual meetings "in November, December, or the first meeting thereafter."

For some lodges, it has become a rather routine procedure that includes the election of new officers and trustees and the approval of additions or changes to lodge rules and regulations. It may be completed in an hour or two, after which members may enjoy visiting with each other before returning home.

Preparing for your annual meeting can be a golden opportunity. If your intent is to build a lodge based on cooperation and service, then it should be reflected in the way your lodge is governed. By devoting some extra time for review and planning in the months preceding the annual meeting, we can determine effective game plans for our local lodges.

Take, for instance, the annual process of reviewing our lodge rules and regulations. Now is the time to begin a systematic review of the articles that govern the operation of your local lodge. These documents aren't chiseled in stone. They can, and should, be amended whenever doing so facilitates the objectives of the membership. The whole idea for having local lodge rules and regulations is to

have a document that establishes some generally agreed upon standards for the lodge. How we choose to structure our local lodges also reflects how we choose to fit into our local communities.

The annual meeting can also be approached as an opportunity to educate your members on matters of lodge and Society business. The use of outside speakers is another way to bring meaningful information and another perspective to the attention of the members. Another good way to address the issues is through time set aside for a question-andanswer period. This allows members to have their questions and concerns addressed in a constructive manner. Finally, some lodges take the initiative to include some form of family entertainment during the meeting, such as a dinner, prize drawings or a local performing group.

Annual meetings can be so much more than routine. With a little time and extra effort, they can strengthen the ties between members`and their lodges.

Youth Showcase This Weekend The biggest weekend of the year for the SPJST Youth Program is this weekend, August 5 and 6. Young members from around the state will converge in the Temple area for the 1995 SPJST State Royalty Contest and State Youth Achievement Day (YAD). From the President's Office SPJST Czech Language Allocations The annual allocation set up for the study of the Czech language at the local lodge level has funds available for Czech lesson classes. The allocations will remain available until December 31, or until the allocation is depleted.

These are the guidelines for the Local Lodge Czech Language Allocation set by the SPJST Supreme Lodge Board: 1. First come, first served basis to the lodges.

2. Classes must be a minimum of five persons.

3. Instructor should be proficient in the Czech language.

4. Allocation for each class is $200.

5. Maximum of two classes per year per lodge.

6. Local lodge will handle aspects of the program within Supreme Lodge guidelines.

7. Minimum of 15 hours per class.

8. No credits will be given for the course.

9. Local lodges will report on how the money is spent and return any unused portion of the allocation.

This program is designed to promote the Czech language and the Czech heritage to small groups in areas where communities do not have nearby access to language studies.

In addition to the allocation, it is suggested that lodges participating in the program collect a small fee from class participants to help offset their expenses and the cost of the instructor. A fee of $10 per student is recommended.

Library, Archives and Musemum (LAM) Committee Reports on Fifth Meeting Members of the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum (LAM) Committee met at the SPJST Home Office on July 21 with Adah Leah Wolf, a peer reviewer with the American Assoication of Museums.

The major areas Ms. Wolf examines are the museum's purpose, governing board, staff and volunteers, facilities, financial situation, exhibits, educational activities, public relations, collections of artifacts, and membership or community support. Although the museum association administers the assessment process, Ms. Wolf is self-employed as a consultant in McKinney and helping the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants create a museum in Dallas.

For the purposes of accreditation by the American Association of Museums, a museum is defined as an organized and permanent nonprofit institution, essentially duational or aesthetic in purpose, with professional staff, which owns and utilizes tangible objects, cares for them and exhibits them to the public on some regular schedule.

The Committee believes the SPJST Museum meets that criterion, but the "outside opinion" has called attention to matters which will make it a better museum.

The LAM Committee will be meeting again in September.

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 1, Fayetteville Reports on Annual Picnic SPJST Lodge No. 1, Fayetteville and Fayette County Czech Heritage Society held their annual picnic at Polansky's Lake at Rek Hill on Sunday, June 25, 1995. They are quite happy to report that there were approximately 50 members and guests in attendance. In rescheduling the time from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., there was concern that some may not know of the time change but since the turn out was so great, future picnics may be scheduled for the later time.

Louis Polansky, President of Lodge No. 1, presented 50-year SPJST membership pins to Bernice Wecheta of Fayetteville and Maxine Wrobleski of Galena Park. They were congratulated on this monumental achievement.

Margie Chovanec Kneblik was presented her pin at a later date.

Both of these ladies worked for the SPJST when its office was located in what is now Chovanec Grocery Store in Fayetteville. Bernice Kovar Wecheta began her career in May, 1945, with the SPJST as Secretary to Mr. John Chupick until 1961. Maxine Minarcik Wrobleski worked for Mr. Ed Marek. Margie Chovanec Kneblik also worked in the office. Also on staff at the SPJST at that time were Mr. Joe Koliha, Mr. Ed Kubala and Mr. Ray Urbanovsky.

After the organizations' meetings, the Fayette Czech Singers entertained everyone with some of the old-time Czech favorites. A delicious covered dish was served picnic-style. What better way to enjoy fellowship, music, food and just taking time to visit with one another!

Carolyn Meiners, State President of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas, brought several genealogy books which gave members an opportunity to research family history. The McClurg family from Huntington Beach, California, took advantage of this opportunity to research the Korenek families who lived around Fayetteville and La Grange in the 1890s.

These Californians came to Texas by way of El Paso and thought that all of Texas was sort of rocky and the people were poor. They were quite surprised when they came to Fayette County and found green grass and wildflowers and that the people were not poor.

The next meeting is to be announced.

To all those persons who came out on Friday and Saturday to prepare everything for Sunday, we thank you. To those who started frying chicken and getting other items ready at 3:30 a.m., we especially thank you. Without these workers, the meal would not have been ready by 11:30 a.m. We had two crews frying the chicken—one at the lodge and another at the Eddie Flrable facility. This really was a time-saver and was so much less work at the lodge. The sausage was also cooked there. We thank all of you.

To those who helped serve at noon time and those that worked with the desserts and tea, thank you. This also includes those who handled the lunch tickets. There were also those persons who worked the auction, collected items for it, the auctioneers and the book keepers. And to our wonderful Publicity Chairperson, thank you for getting the word out to everybody.

To all those that helped at the games for the youth club thank you. Thanks to the raffle committee and the raffle supporters. We also want to thank all the bar workers and the clean-up workers. It took many members and also non-members to do all this work.

Lastly, we want to thank everyone for coming out to support us. We also thank everyone who donated food and other items. We especially appreciate everyone's time and work.

Just a little reminder that West Fest is around the corner. We will again be asking for your help. The picnic and the West Fest are our two money-making projects that we will again use to donate to our local community.

We enjoyed honoring our 50-year member Emil Rubac, our 75-year member Rosie Svetlik Matyastik (92 years old) and our 96-year old member Marie Stalmach Posival (77 year-member) on June 25, 1995. It was so good to see these members. It was an effort for the two ladies to attend. I could tell by their reminiscences about attending the meeting and activities that SPJST means a lot to them. We thank and appreciate the families for bringing them and helping us honor all of them. May God bless each of you. Sorry the other four did not attend.

Our property committee is busy repairing the ramp and rest room to accommodate our wheel chair patients.

A social will be held at the next meeting.

The meeting of Lodge 25, Ennis was held on Thursday evening, July 13 at 8 p.m. The meeting was called to order by President Ernest Haskovec.

The Pledge of Allegiance was lead by Johnnie Krajca. A moment of silence was held for our lodge brother Ernest Lee Skrivanek, who passed away on Tuesday, July 11, 1995, at the Navarro Hospital in Corsicana.

We send get-well wishes to Marvin Martinek, who had an accident on his farm with cuts and bruises on his hands, and Bill Marusak, who had surgery.

Hope you both are doing better by now.

Secretary Pat Fowler read the minutes from the June meeting. They were approved as read. Treasurer Kay Kovar's report was given and approved.

Vice President Charles Patak gave the report on the 1996 plans for the Polka Festival. Bar Manager Kenneth Honza gave a favorable bar report.

The youth report was presented.

Seven youth and three adults attended the District Three camp.

Brother Jerry Kucera, the state field representative for District Three, attended the meeting. He explained the new SPJST policy that will be for people ages 50 to 80 years. Members with small policies can now buy additional coverage. Call any of your sales representatives and they will help you with this new policy.

New member Timothy Honza Woodard was welcomed into the lodge.

Door prizes were won by Ann Haskovec and Kay Kovar.

Our next meeting will be August 10 at 8 p.m.

Our you'': will be hosting a Pampered Chef Showing at 5:45 p.m. on August 10.

Our annual picnic has come and gone.

On behalf of the officers and board of trustees, we would like to express our sincere thanks for your support. We had a very good turnout this year. Thanks to everyone for coming to help make it successful.

As president, I want to personally say thank you to everyone for helping, donating items, and supporting. I also want to thank the merchants who donated items for the auction. Without their support and help, this could not have been possible.

Dear Members, Another month has gone by and again, it is time for another monthly meeting of Lodge Karel Jonas. The lodge's eighth meeting of 1995 will be held on August 13, the second Sunday, at 2 p.m. in the meeting room at 106 Leveridge Street which is on the ground floor of the SPJST hall building.

The agenda will follow the established "Order of Business" and will be open to any business needing immediate attention.

Gulf Coast Czech Heritage Festival (Lodge 172, Pasadena) Music by the Moonriders —SPJSTI

The regular monthly meeting of Lodge 66, Waco was held on July 16.

Everything was set up under the trees in our park with red, white and blue streamers, balloons and hats made by the youth club members. The site looked so very festive. There was a nice breeze and it was great outdoors.

But at meeting time, the showers came making it necessary for everything to be moved inside for the meeting. However, following the meeting everyone enjoyed the old-fashioned picnic in the park. It was great. There were 38 members and 12 youth in attendance.

Brother Jerry Kucera discussed the SPJST Summer Marathon '95 Membership Drive. He urged members to notify the sales representatives of any prospects by filling out the special coupon and handing it to a sales representative or mailing it to the Home Office. He would like to see Lodge 66 win in drawings for cash prizes. Lodge 66 from January through June had 33 applications written, approved and issued.

Diane Engelke reported on the youth club activities, including all the awards won by the youth at the District Three Youth Achievement Day. Also, congratulations to Jesika Tierce, our very active youth club member for eleven years. She was presented a gift of a check for $200 from the Libbie Parma SPJST Lodge 66 Youth Club Trust Fund upon her graduation from high school. Jesika, congratulations and best wishes for a very successful future.

Libbie Parma reported memorials for Daniel Nors were received from Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Mueller, Mr. and Mrs. James Yates, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Parma, Mrs. Bonnie Pruitt and from the SPJST Youth Club.

Further plans have been made for "Homecoming for SPJST Lodge 66", previously referred to as our fun day.

Please note the date has been changed from August 12 to September 17, 1995, since this is our regular meeting day and is the 89th anniversary of Lodge 66.

Tentative plans for the activities to start is 1 p.m. Active members are reminded to call older members to invite them.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Mary Alice Langlotz reported there were 13 present at game night in June. Dana McAdams won the door prize. The next fun night is August 14. Everyone has fun, and the food is great. Make a note of this date and plan to join us at Linden Hall on August 14. Each family brings snacks.

Mary Alice reported that help was needed from members to volunteer to work during dances. On August 6 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., a class will be held at Linden Hall to certify workers in the bar.

Other lodges are welcome to send members to attend this class. It is very important that all bar workers be certified.

It was announced that Brother Eugene Gerlich has agreed to take the book keeping job for Linden Hall.

Brother Keith Gatewood was the winner of the door prize. John Engelke won in the 50-50 club. During June, Brother Jerry Kucera was chosen "the father of the year". Congratulations!

Members present celebrating July birthdays were Keith Gatewood, Dana McAdams, Ben Pustejovsky, Nathan Tierce, Gladys Yates, Polly Gaidusek and Dakota Yates. The birthday cake was provided by a youth club member and all joined in singing of the "Happy Birthday" song.

Our next meeting will be at 2:30 p.m. on August 20, 1995. Make plans to attend.

79, Corpus Christi to Meet August 20 Lodge

I have been remiss in writing and giving a report from our lodge for the past two or three months. I had some problems writing because of a very sore hand and time has a way of passing by too quickly for me. I apologize and will make an effort to be more efficient.

Our monthly meetings had been having a better turn-out by the membership until the July 16 meeting. We are hopeful since vacations will be soon over and school starting again, our people will begin attending on a regular basis.

Remember how years ago we all looked forward to attending the meetings, seeing old friends and sharing some great socials? I personally can remember many wonderful times, renewing friendships, listening to the youth club sing Czech songs (and there was a large youth club!), going to spring meetings, going along on youth club outings, tasting delicious dishes and getting to know so many people.

We did all of this when our children and families were young. This was also when we all participated in activities at school, church, scouts, etc. And now that our children have "left the nest" (along with many other families), there are only two of us. There's no football, etc. games to attend, no drill team performances to watch, no children to tend to, no large meals to cook, and no lessons to check or assist with. It seems so sad to me that we were involved in so many activities when our families were young, but now many of us cannot seem to get back to our meetings. Think of how many friends have moved or passed away who we shared so many good times with. It is time for us to get reacquainted and enjoy each other's company again!

Our lodge, like the others, is busy working to accomplish required incentives and hopefully, our members are telling our sales representatives about prospective members. Our youth club is attempting to interest members' children in the monthly meetings, volleyball tournaments, outings, trips, and all types of activities.

My husband and I are looking forward, weather permitting, to attending the District Seven Fall Meeting and see old friends and maybe make some new ones.

Our next monthly meeting will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 20. We hope to see you there!

91, Crosby Sets DefensiA;e Driving Class

Lodge

Lodge 91, Crosby, in conjunction with Harris County Precinct 2, will sponsor a defensive driving class on Thursday, August 24, 1995, at the Highlands Community Center at 604 West Wallisville Road in Highlands, Texas.

The class, taught by Chester Stasney, will begin promptly at 8:30 a.m. and end at 3 p.m. It is suggested that each person bring a sack lunch. The cost of the course is $5 per person.

Attendees must be East Harris County residents and be at least 55 years old.

Each person attending will receive a defensive driving certificate. Most insurance companies give a rate reduction to persons with course certificates. For married persons to be eligible for the insurance rate reduction, both husband and wife must attend the course.

92, Fort Worth Reports on Lodge Activities

Dear Members and Friends, I was supposed to let all of you know the lodge singers will start singing again.

So you ladies and men that would like to sing Czech songs, please contact Mary Cecelia Krivanek. Her phone number is 237-4320. These practices will be each first and third Tuesday of each month starting around 7 p.m. You do not have to be a member to belong to the singing group. We want to be sure that we do have some Czech songs at our Czech Heritage Day on September 9. Also, do not forget to buy some chances for the nice prizes that will be given away on Heritage Day. Several members do have tickets for sale, so you may be the winner of the $1,000 or several $100 prizes. Last year's winner is still happy that he won.

I want to thank my friend Hilda Burtis for the nice write-up in the July 19 issue of the Vestnik. It really lets all of us and especially the younger generation know how it was years ago. It tells how folks on the farm raised cows for milk, butter, and that good cottage cheese for the good kolaches. They raised chickens for eggs and for the home-fried chicken. Hogs were raised for the bacon, klobase, and lard. These were put in large crocks to keep because at that time there were no ice boxes. If you did not read that writeup, it is well worth your time. Vestnik. This is a way to let all members know about each lodge's activities. I am sure that our editor Brother Brian enjoys getting letters from you. He is doing a nice job with the Vestnik.

Be sure all you tarok players try to come to Lodge 92, Fort Worth at 3316 Roberts Cut-Off Road on August 26.

The charge is reasonable and the dinner is included. It used to be that the Kubala's won most of the time but now it seems that the Brezinas are taking over. We are getting younger persons to play and they are giving the older ones a race to be the top winners. Taroks are played each first and third Tuesday of the month starting at 7 p.m.

Sister Marie Tesar is on the sick list.

She is having tests and is now in the hospital. So, Marie, our prayers are that soon you will be in good health again. To the others who are not feeling too good, we wish you good health also.

To be able to keep up with activities at our lodge, look in the calendar section of the Vestnik. On August 20, the Sulak Boys from Ennis will be playing from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. They will be playing polkas and waltzes and some modern and country music.

Remember that our lodge, as other lodges, are kept cool so do not say it is too hot to go dancing. So till next time, stay cool and enjoy things that are held at any SPJST lodge. I am sure that if the ones that started the SPJST could only see how things did turn out, they would be happy to see the organization doing so good. Many thanks to the founders.

139, Danbury Reports on June Dinner and Meeting Lodge

On June 7, Lodge 139, Danbury held a dinner-meeting at EJ's Restaurant. After the Pledge of Allegiance, members stood for a period of silence in memory of our departed sister, Katherine Chovanec, who passed away on June 5, 1995.

Wesley Baldwin was congratulated on his calf being judged Grand Champion of the Brazoria County Youth Fair. During the fair, Lane Lostak, who is home for the summer from the University of Texas, assisted Wesley in getting the calf groomed and ready to be judged.

After dinner, there was no lingering as everyone was eager to get home to cheer the Houston Rockets on to win the first game of the NBA championship finals.

Due to our vice president, Monte Baldwin, being in the hospital with an injured back and some of our other officers being otherwise occupied, the July lodge meeting was postponed to July 12.

Monte had surgery for a ruptured disk and we are happy to report he is making a great recovery and was in attendance at the July meeting.

It was announced that our sales representatives have been hard at work. Thus,

for this year, Helen Filipp has brought in 13 new members and Lorenda Baldwin has brought in eight new members.

After all business was concluded, a social was held with lots of good food and fellowship.

142, Houston Reports on July Meeting

On Sunday, July 9, 1995, at 2 p.m., our monthly meeting was called to order by our president, Keith Kieschnick. We had 29 members and five visitors present.

Everyone stood for the Pledge Allegiance to our flag.

Roll call of officers by Secretary Alice Jochen revealed all officers and Board of Trustees members present except Flag Bearer Michael Schleider, Board Chairman Robert Kieschnick, Henry Hermis, Nancy Cook, and Fraternal Activities Coordinator Marilyn Spivey.

Correspondence and all officers' reports were read.

Sick Committee reports Mae B. Travis and Lula Gambil in the hospital. We wish them both a speedy recovery.

Brother Rudy Cernuch donated three prizes for a drawing from the register book. Thanks to Brother Rudy for his generosity. The winners were Lillie Valka, Ernie Stryk, and Keith Kieschnick.

Visitors recognized were Joe Gambil, Jo Ann Buri, Jo Buri, Fred Buri, and Amy McLelland. Thanks for coming to our meeting. Visitors are always welcome.

Members celebrating birthdays in July were Joe Braunagel, Dorothy Tumis, Lorraine Motl, and Amanda Hermis.

John Buri had just returned from a four-week trip to Europe with his German class. He reported having a very good time. We are glad to have him back home now.

The capsule prize for $20 went unclaimed due to the absence of Catherine Sammers and Daniel K. Mabry. Next month's prize goes to $30.

The regular meeting of Lodge 201, Bleiblerville-Nelsonville was called to order by President Elaine Duron on Sunday, July 9, 1995, at 3 p.m. All officers were in attendance and 24 members attended.

A moment of silent prayer in memory of departed member Joe Sisa was observed.

Minutes of the previous meeting were read by Secretary Mrs. Lillie Mae Shupak and approved. All bills submitted were approved and paid. All correspondence was read.

Lillie Mikeska, sales representative, spoke on the membership drive. She asked members to get involved and handed out material.

Summer is No Vacation for Lodge 154, Fort Worth Member The winner's circle has been the place to be this summer for Tina Harrison of St. Louis, Missouri. Tina is a member of Lodge 154, Fort Worth.

The 16-year-old tennis standout, who will be a junior at St. Joseph's Academy in the fall, has participated in three tournaments during the summer season.

She has a singles championship and two doubles crowns to show for her efforts.

"I think I could be playing better," Harrison said. "But I have to be happy with what has happened overall."

Harrison got a good start to the summer season with a championship in the Muny Tennis Tournament, which featured talented players from all age brackets. Harrison has had her most success in the Missouri Valley Tennis Association (MVTA) National Qualifying Tournaments in doubles.

She teamed with Allison Lisle of Hillsboro to win both the National Qualifier I in Springfield and the National Qualifier II at Dwight Davis Tennis Center in St. Louis.

The duo is ranked No. 1 in the Missouri Valley in the girls 16 division.

"We have played a lot of doubles together," Harrison said. "She knows what I am going to do on the court and I know what she is going to do. We

compliment each other well. I enjoy playing doubles. It is a little more fun and less intense than playing singles.

The singles matches can get quite intense."

She enjoyed more success recently in the National Qualifier II, finishing fourth in singles. She eventually lost in straight sets in the semifinals.

The efforts in the two qualifying tournaments enabled Harrison to reach the Sweet 16 and a spot in the National Qualifying Tournament, which was held recently in Wichita, Kansas.

Harrison said she was happy with her fifth-place finish.

On July 30, 1995, beginning at noon, there will be a fund raising benefit at the lodge hall for the Emily O'Connor fund to help defray some of the medical and funeral expenses. An auction will begin at 2 p.m. Food and drinks will be available throughout the afternoon.

by President Sadie Kubin, followed by the Pledge to the flag. A moment of silence was held for Victor Zemanek, brother to Liddie Pavelka and Sidney Bridewelland and cousin to Frances Kudrna and Dorothy Sherrell.

Secretary Linda Trojacek read the minutes from the last meeting and they were approved as read. Treasurer Mildred Trojacek then gave her report.

Sister Lillie Kosarek had her quilt made for July. Sister Rosie Bednar had hers quilted last month.

A motion was made and carried to make a donation to the St. John's School science lab.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Sisters Hattie Lakar, Mary Vrla, Rose Mynarcik, and Julia Harris.

Mildred Trojacek had surgery last month and she is back with us. Jerry Kohn and Sister Alice Roberts also had surgery. Hope you get well soon!

On August 5, AARP will have a country store at the local United Methodist Church Building from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This is their moneymaker so come "Czech" it out. There will be lots of crafts, canned goods, food, etc.

We had 24 members and five guests.

This was a great attendance. The five guests were Charles Kosarek, Julius Podhrasky, Dorothy Sherrell, Frank Laznovsky and Randy Trojacek.

Our next meeting will be August 10 and oddly enough, that is when school starts around here. Hope to see you there and maybe Alice can be back with us.

Wanted for 1995 Czech Day at State Fair of Texas Performers

The 1995 Czech Day at the State Fair of Texas, sponsored by the American Czech Culture Society, will be Sunday, October 8. Plans are under way for another fun-filled day of food, performances, music, and socializing.

Brethren Church Christian Sisters to Sponsor Country Quilt Show Ocker

The Christian Sisters of Ocker Brethren Church at Zabcikville will sponsor a Country Quilt Show and Bazaar on Saturday, August 12 from 10 a.m. to 5

p.m. It will be in the church's Fellowship Building. The church is located on Highway 53, about 11- miles east of Temple.

An admission fee of $2 will be charged. Children under 12 will be admitted free. In addition to viewing the quilts, refreshments will be served and quilt booklets will be furnished to identify the various quilts. Quilt patterns will be available for a minimal charge.

The following classifications will be shown: antique-historical (before 1933), patchwork, applique, friendship, embroidery, tie-tac, machine-made, crib, children's and others.

Quilts will be labeled with the name of the person providing the quilt or quilts.

Other handmade articles will be shown.

Love offerings are being accepted for a queen-sized quilt which was made by members of the Christian Sisters. The pattern is called "Iris Chain". Any members of the Christian Sisters will accept offerings. A name for the quilt will be drawn at the end of the show. You do not have to be present to be eligible for this

Important Meetings S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1 Family Support Group meetings will resume on September 7. The meetings are held in the Sun Room at 6:30 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month.

County Czech Heritage Society Reports on June Meeting Victoria

Victoria County Czech Heritage Society held its general meeting on June 15 at the Victoria Electric Co-op with President Joe Pustka presiding.

Czech Language Instruction Alief Evening School to Offer Czech Class

Resident Council Meeting Residents discussed going on a field trip to see the farm and field scenes around the Taylor area at the Resident Council Meeting on June 7, 1995.

Shirley Holubec, FSS, informed the residents that the summer menu cycle would begin in July.

The June favorite menu was planned and was served on Wednesday, June 21.

Myrtle Hall suggested baked chicken and dressing and other residents added green beans, cranberry sauce, hot rolls and peach cobbler.

Field Trip Residents enjoyed a field trip on Wednesday, June 28, 1995. Residents Bessie Bruckner, Nora Merka, Betty Lou Krieg, Alvie Lane, Nelda Schwab, Ella Linke, Ida Priesmeyer, Edna Granzin, Myrtle Hall, and Mary DeBretague, accompanied by Maria Estrada, Restorative Aide, and Pauline Kovar, Activity Director enjoyed a trip with transporation provided by WBCO bus/van services. The trip took them through the Thrall area and they enjoyed seeing all the pretty crops. They also enjoyed eating ice cream and drinking soda pop while riding in the van.

Rehabilitation Resident of the Month Ella Thaler, born December 5, 1900, in Williamson County, became a resident here in December, 1993. She and her husband farmed in Taylor most of their married lives. Ella's two sons Herbert and Willard live in Taylor. Ella had the misfortune of breaking her hip last February but has made great progress in rehabilitation in balancing and walking twice daily with the assistance of Maria Estrada, Restorative Aide. Keep up the good work and dedication, Ella!

Alief Evening School under auspices of Alief Independent School District is again offering a conversational Czech course right after Labor Day at Hastings High School. The location of the school is between Bellaire Boulevard on the south and Alief-Clodine on the north, on the southwest side of the intersection of Cook Road and High Star Drive in the community of Alief in Southwestern Houston.

The first lesson of this 12-week course, designed to develop basic skill in the Czech language wherever it is spoken, will be on Wednesday, September 6, 1995, and henceforth once a week, always on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuition, set by the school, will be $49 and the instructor will be again John J. Karas of Houston.

Post scriptum: Studies of Czech and classes of the same are vitally important in perpetuation of our national heritage as they bring forth the increased ethnic awareness of all involved CzechAmericans. Everyone knows that the

advantages of learning another language are a hundredfold, and the fact that Czech belongs to the Slavonic languages (largest group of the European languages) adds to the value of the Czech language.

Knowledge of Czech is also a halfway step towards the learning of other Slavic languages. Czech is, according to the survey done by the Texas Educational Agency of Austin in the early seventies, the third language of Texas, after English and Spanish.

Now when our Old Country is finally free, the knowledge of Czech would be especially useful to the thousands of visitors to our beautiful ancestral land.

Anyone interested in the above offered course should register by mail as soon as possible, or should come to the walk-in registration on the nights of August 22 and 23, 1995, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in the Hastings High School South Cafeteria, 4410 Cook Road at Alief.

Czech Language Class at Spring Branch Westchester Education Center Czech language instruction will be offered again this fall at the Westchester Education Center of the Spring Branch Independent School District.

This semester, Czech I, the more basic class will be taught. Czech I is designed for students who have minimal knowledge of the Czech language and will focus on basic grammar and conversational elements. It is an opportunity to establish elementary language skills in grammar, reading, writing and conversation. However, depending on the skill level demonstrated by the students, adjustments in difficulty will be made.

The Czech I class is a 12-week course starting on September 12, 1995. It will

meet on Tuesday of each week from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Westchester Education Center.

Registration for the course will begin on August 21, 1995. The registration schedule can be obtained by calling the Westchester Education Center. Tuition for the course is $60 plus $5 registration fee.

Evergreen

The Evergreen School Reunion and historical marker dedication are slated for September 23, 1995.

The newly-erected historical marker of the former Evergreen School will be dedicated on the original site at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 23, 1995, immediately followed by the fifth Evergreen School Reunion at Sulphur Park.

In case of inclement weather, the dedication will also be held at Sulphur Park.

All former and present community

residents, teachers, students and their immediate families are invited to attend.

Dusek Family Celebration The descendants of Frantisek Dusek and Anna Motl will celebrate 125 years in Texas on Saturday, August 19, 1995.

The celebration will commence at 10 a.m. with a memorial service conducted

In Memoriam Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge Sam Houston, No. 73, Seymour, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sympathy to the bereaved family of our lodge brother, JOHN FRANK STOREK, who passed away on Sunday, June 25, 1995, at the Seymour Hospital.

Rosary was recited Monday, June 26 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Seymour. Funeral mass was at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 27 at the church with the Rev. Bart J. Landwarmeyer officiating.

Burial was at the SPJST Cemetery under the direction of Archer Funeral Home.

Mr. Storek was born on August 2, 1918, in Seymour, Texas, and was a lifetime resident of Baylor County. He served in the Army during World War Two. He and Mary Hons were married March 4, 1946, in Seymour. He was a retired farmer and a member of SPJST Lodge 73, Sam Houston and Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Frances Weckar of Denton, Texas; a brother, Ernest of Seymour; two grandsons; and four great-grandchildren.

Burial was in Seaton Cemetery.

Born in Red Ranger to Joe and Rosie Vitek Pechal, he married Levina Marek in Temple in 1946. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II in the Pacific and later worked as a farmer and as a wood mill worker for Temple Products for 21 years. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone and the Seaton Brethren Church.

Survivors are his wife, Levina Marek Pechal of Oscar; two sons, Douglas Pechal of Bryan and Linhart Pechal of Temple; two daughters, Darlene Sefcik of Sparks and Shirley Volek of Granger; two brothers, Joe Pechal of Seaton and Clarence Pechal of Temple; three sisters, Josephine Dudley of Richardson, Lorene Kotrla of Oscar, and Vallie Zavodny of Rogers; and 13 grandchildren.

Expression of Sympathy The officers and members of Lodge 25, Ennis wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our lodge brother and friend, ERNEST LEE SKRIVANEK. Funeral services for Ernest L. Skrivanek were held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 11, at the Navarro Regional Hospital in Corsicana.

Mr. Skrivanek was born April 9, 1927, in the Crisp Community. He was the son of John and Elizabeth Kouba Skrivanek.

He was reared in Crisp where he attended school. After finishing school, he began farming. In 1948, he entered the U.S. Army where he served as a Corporal. He spent five years in the Army Reserve and was discharged in 1954. He was employed by Ennis Business Forms,/the Ennis Daily News and Ellis County Precinct No. 2 from which he retired in 1988. Mr. Skrivanek was a member of the American Legion, SPJST Lodge 25, and the Sokol Lodge.

Survivors include two sons, Glenn Skrivanek and Bob Skrivanek, both of Ennis; three brothers, Alvin Skrivanek of Stanton, NE; Emil Skrivanek and George Skrivanek, both of Ennis; and a sister, Elizabeth Beton of Garland.

Resolution of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 48, Beyersville, Texas, and on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother, CHARLIE BRINKMEYER. Charlie Brinkmeyer, 90, of the Beyersville Community, passed away Friday, July 21, 1995, at the Taylor Care Center in Taylor.

Mr. Brinkmeyer, a retired farmer, had lived in the area most of his life, where he was an active member of the St. Paul Lutheran Brotherhood. He served on the Thrall School Board for 16 years, from 1943-1959. On June 12, 1926, he was married to Christine Wolf.

He was preceded in death by one son, Charlie Brinkmeyer, Jr.; two sisters; and three brothers.

Survivors include his wife, Christine Brinkmeyer of the Beyersville Community; a daughter, Doris Wiesner of the Beyersville Community; three granddaughters, Beverly Ivins, Wanda Heiner and Betty Wiesner; two greatgrandchildren, Scott and Rene Roeglin; one sister, Ella Mahlow of Thrall; and three brothers, Theodore Brinkmeyer of Taylor, Alvin Brinkmeyer of Thrall, and Herman Brinkmeyer of Taylor.

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. on Monday, July 24, 1995, at Condra Memorial Chapel in Taylor with the Rev. David Tietz and the Rev. Sandi Wilcox officiating. Interment was in the Taylor City Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the St. Paul Lutheran Church or Gay

Brinkmeyer Scholarship Fund.

Arrangements were by Condra Funeral Home, Taylor.

Burial was in Powers Chapel Cemetery near Rosebud.

Mrs. Marek died Sunday, July 9 in a Temple hospital.

She was horn in Grayson County and later lived in Cedar Springs. She married Rudolph Frank Marek on November 20, 1927. She was a homemaker.

Survivors are two sons, Rudy Marek of Rosebud and Clarence Marek of Houston; a daughter, Romalee Coker of Rosebud; a brother, Ed Skrabanek of Temple; four sisters, Ella Bartek of Temple, Julie Martinet of San Angelo and Lillie Dana and Stacie Koch, both of Fort Worth; 14 grandchildren; 21 greatgrandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee on behalf of Lodge 16, Bila Hora, wish to express our sympathy to the family of AUGUST 0. MELNAR, who passed away on June 28, 1995, at the age of 84 years in the Southern Manor Nursing Home in Hallettsville, Texas.

Mr. Melnar was born June 14, 1911, in Lavaca County to the late Edward and Tracy Janus Melnar. He was a veteran of World War II and a farmer and rancher.

Mr. Melnar was a member of the American Legion, VFW Post, SPJST Lodge 16, Bila Hora, and Vsetin Czech Moravian Brethren Church in the Vsetin Community.

He is survived by one brother, Henry Melnar of Hallettsville.

Services were held at 10 a.m.

Saturday, July 1 with the Rev. Henry Beseda officiating in the Vsetin Church.

Graveside services and burial were held in the Vsetin Cemetery under the auspices of the American Legion and VFW Post. Arrangements were by the Kubena Funeral Home.

Czech Contributions to Texas Music Exhibit Running Through August An exciting new Czech music exhibit will be running through the month of August in Austin, Texas. The program is titled "Czech Contributions to Texas Music" and was produced by the Texas Music Museum. The exhibit in sponsored in part by the City of Austin, under the auspices of the Austin Arts Commission.

The exhibit opens on Tuesday, August 1 and will run through Tuesday, August 29, 1995, at the Dougherty Art Center, located at 1110 Barton Springs Road in Austin. Even if you've never been to Austin before, it's easy to find. Barton Springs Road runs roughly parallel to the south shore of the Colorado River, which is just south of downtown.

The exhibit explores the history and present status of Texas Czech music and includes historical and cultural details of Czech immigration to Texas, Czech bands, dance halls and folk songs using photographs, artifacts and descriptive information. An informative booklet as well as audio and video tapes of Texas Czech culture and music are incorporated into the exhibit.

The Grand Opening Music Program is scheduled for Sunday, August 6, 1995, from 2 to 4 p.m. Musical entertainment will be provided by Kovanda's Czech Band with a special performance by Ray Krenek on the dulcimer. The exhibit and musical program are free to the public.

According to the literature we received relating to the program, several Texas/Czech experts contributed time and energy to the project as advisors.

Youth Letters Section District Two Youth Set Six Flags Trip For Saturday, August 12 Dear Members, Members of District Two will enjoy a summer trip to Six Flags Over Texas on Saturday, August 12.

Buses furnished by District Two will leave the Home Office at 7:15 a.m. Plans are to spend the entire day and evening at Six Flags. Buses will depart Six Flags at midnight. With enough requests, there will be a bus coming back earlier, leaving Six Flags at 7 p.m.

I will be purchasing tickets at a group rate of $21.95 per person. Tickets at the gate are $30.12. I will need to have the tickets paid in advance by August 1.

This is a district trip and all members of District Two are invited—youth, parents, grandparents, and other members.

9, Snook Leader-in-Training Reports on Camp Lodge

Dear Vestnik Readers, District One just returned from a great trip to Camp Val Verde. Our camp was July 14 through July 17. This was my first experience at being a leader-in-training. I was able to lead the campers with songs, crafts, and even the night hike.

We really had a good time at the karaoke dance on Saturday night and the shaving cream fight on Sunday night.

We had 85 campers attend and I am sure everyone enjoyed it like I did.

Sunday, July 23 was the Youth Achievement Day for District One. It was in Dime Box with registration at 11 a.m. followed by a fried chicken lunch.

Lodge 9 had two group talents and several individual talents. I placed first on my sewing and will be going to State in Temple. Lodge 9 also placed first on their poster of club activities.

Our next meeting will be August 2, 1995, at 6:30 p.m.

On Thursday, July 27, we went to Bee Creek Pool for a swimming party. It was very hot and everyone had a great time.

I attended YAD in Dime Box on Sunday, July 23. I entered several crafts and talents. I placed third on my individual talent. I placed first on my science and education project and I will be going to State. It was hot in Dime Box but everyone had a good day.

Dear Readers, The July 2, 1995, meeting of Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club was called to order at 2 p.m. by President Lisa Spanhel.

Scott Hudson and Andy Baker led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and members remained standing for a moment of silent prayer.

The register was read. Sixteen members and ten adults were present. Guests introduced were Jimmy Baker and adults were Martha Zavodny, Vivian Cooksey, Faye Hudson, Debbie Veselka, Richard Greger, Rosamond Baker, David Nauert, Fawn Spanhel, Kelly Ray and Melanie Zavodny.

The minutes were read and approved.

Tammy Baker gave the treasurer's report.

Our youth leader, Melanie Zavodny, reported about the upcoming District and State Youth Achievement Days, youth camp, and the Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area (BLORA). We will be going to BLORA on July 30 and plan to go to Six Flags Over Texas with District Two on August 12. Our next youth night will be August 26 and will follow the theme for a Hawaiian Night. So plan to attend and dress Hawaiian.

Youth members enjoyed having cookies and punch for refreshments. The next youth club meeting will he Saturday, August 19 with a swimming and pizza party at Walker Pool in Temple. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. and

The July meeting of Lodge 29, Taylor Youth Club was held Friday, July 14 at 6:30 p.m. The meeting was called to order by Vice President Chad Tallas.

Kendra Zak led the Pledge and the motto.

Kendra Zak was presented with a certificate and a letter from Joni Lange, State Youth Director, and Howard Leshikar, Supreme Lodge President, thanking her for her participation in the camp t-shirt design contest.

Members were reminded of the time and place to meet to leave for camp.

There was a craft workshop held after the meeting to make badges for camp.

Members were advised of a Youth Club Workshop to be held in Temple on August 26 for youth club officers and leaders. Reservations must be made before August 18. The workshop topic will be "How to be an Effective Leader."

Members discussed community service projects. A motion was made by Jeffrey Kelm and seconded by Chad Cervenka to adopt a section of the City Hall Christmas Light display for this year.

This motion carried. The youth leader will contact City Hall to see what needs to be done to obtain a section of the light display for set up at Christmas.

Everyone wishing to go to Six Flags on August 12 was asked to sign up so we could give a count to the District Youth Counselor as to how many would be going from Lodge 29.

Everyone was reminded that the money for the trip to Port Aransas was due. Individuals were advised of the different families that would be staying together.

The Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club met on Sunday afternoon, July 9, 1995, at the First National Bank Coffee Room. The meeting was called to order by Jeanine Dorotik. Bethany Dluhos led the members in the SPJST pledge, motto, and prayer. We welcomed our two visitors, Randy Beltran and Marcy Dorotik.

Michale Kaspar called roll and read the minutes for the June meeting. Lisa Bubela reported that everyone had a great time at Camp Lone Star. Travis Krpec enjoyed himself at camp this year as a first-year camper. He said he was going to tell everyone that the most fun was the water guns.

We are getting ready for our District Youth Achievement Day on July 16, 1995 and Hallettsville is hosting the event. On July 20, 1995, the club will be going on a district tour to San Marcos and San Antonio.

Poems were read by Camille and Mandy Staff, Kirby Bubela, Shara Dluhos, Sarah Dluhos, and Kyle Kaspar.

We sang "Happy Birthday" to Rachael Dluhos and Bradley Krpec.

For a charity project, the members brought clothing and canned goods for the Blessing Cup. Our meeting was adjourned.

T.J. and Brandon Drapela served the members with refreshments. The members enjoyed the snow cones they provided.

The Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club will meet on August 13, 1995, when we will have our summer outing. We will meet at Show Place III, watch a movie and then go out to eat at Mr. Gatti's Pizza.
