Lodge Letters Section

From the President's Office SPJST Czech Language Allocations The annual allocation set up for the study of the Czech language at the local lodge level has funds available for Czech lesson classes. The allocations will remain available until December 31, or until the allocation is depleted.

These are the guidelines for the Local Lodge Czech Language Allocation set by the SPJST Supreme Lodge Board: 1. First come, first served basis to the lodges.

2. Classes must be a minimum of five persons.

3. Instructor should be proficient in the Czech language.

4. Allocation for each class is $200.

5. Maximum of two classes per year per lodge.

6. Local lodge will handle aspects of the program within Supreme Lodge guidelines.

7. Minimum of 15 hours per class.

8. No credits will be given for the course.

9. Local lodges will report on how the money is spent and return any unused portion of the allocation.

This program is designed to promote the Czech language and the Czech heritage to small groups in areas where communities do not have nearby access to language studies.

In addition to the allocation, it is suggested that lodges participating in the program collect a small fee from class participants to help offset their expenses and the cost of the instructor. A fee of $10 per student is recommended.

Fayette County, Texas, birthplace of the SPJST (Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas) and Czech history in Texas will play host to 27 young musicians from the Czech Republic. Through the efforts of SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville President Louis Polansky, Czech Heritage Week in Texas will get off to a musical start.

A free concert will be held in Fayetteville on Friday, October 20, 1995, by the award-winning Czech Youth String Symphony from the State School for the Arts in Hradec Kralove, Czech Republic. This delightful group of teenagers won the Czech National Competition in 1993 and has since traveled many countries in Europe. This will be their first tour to the United States.

With the State of Texas being home to one of the largest populations of CzechAmericans and, through some connections with the Christ Evangelical

Presbyterian Church in Houston, members of the Youth String Symphony will arrive in Texas on October 14. The church has arranged for host families through October 30.

Arrangements have been made for the young people to spend a few days on a real "Texasu" ranch in Burton, Texas.

From there, they will head out to meet the students at Fayetteville High School and then they will receive a guided tour of the Fayetteville Heritage Museum.

The next stop will be performing a concert at the beautifully preserved SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville Hall, one mile east of the Fayetteville square on Highway 159. Following the concert, a real Texas barbecue at Polansky Lake has been planned for the children. True Texas hospitality is what makes the most lasting impression on visitors from abroad.

If you miss the opportunity to see the Czech Youth String Symphony perform in historic Fayetteville, additional concerts are scheduled at Sokol Houston on Friday, October 27 at 7 p.m. in Sokol Hall (1314 West Patton in Houston) and T.H. Rogers High School Auditorium, time TBA (5840 San Felipe in Houston).

Additional concert dates are being planned for LaGrange and Pasadena.

Lodge 5, Tioga Members Enjoy Social The members of Lodge 5, Tioga recently held a get-acquainted social introducing their new sales representative, Lanny Jaresh. The social was held after the lodge's regular meeting.

Special guests were State Field Representative Jerry Kucera and State Field Manager Gene McBride. Brother Kucera was instrumental in Brother Jaresh's appointment. Both Insurance Department representatives challenged the lodge to increase activities and growth.

Great thanks is extended to all of these donors who help contribute to a better future for worthy young members through the Scholarship Program.

The meeting and social were held in South Maud, Texas, which is near Gainesville and just a few miles south of the Texas-Oklahoma border.

We are really expecting to see some great things from Lodge 5. It is good to know we have people doing SPJST work literally spanning Texas.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood Reports on July Meeting Our meeting was called to order by President Johnnie Krizan. Our secretary was not present but all miutes were read and approved.

We had 13 members present and one guest, Jerry Kucera.

Celebrating birthdays in July were Peggy Dobecka and Robert Dobecka.

The $5 door prize was won by Lydia Dobecka. The $10 door prize was won

by John Wright (not present). The $1 door prize was won by Ray Hromadka.

17, New Tabor Reports on July Meeting

Dear Members, Lodge 17, New Tabor held its regular meeting on July 2 with all officers present.

A resolution was read for Willie Mae Matus. We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to her friends and loved ones.

Lodge 17's next meeting will be August 4 at 7:30 p.m. (due to the State YAD being on our regular meeting date).

18, Elgin Reports on July Meeting Lodge

Lodge 18, Elgin held its regular meeting on July 12 due to a conflict on the regular meeting day. Thirty-seven members gathered at K-Bobs in Round Rock for a family "Dutch dinner". The members all enjoyed the fresh food in which there was so much to choose from.

After the dinner, the members gathered in a meeting room for the business concerning their lodge.

The group was welcomed by President Dollie Hajda, who led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. Each member stood in silence and offered a prayer for their deceased sisters and brothers, those on the sick list, and especially for a good meeting. The roll of officers was called with Vice President and Fraternal Activities Coordinator Leslie Gustafson, Secretary Agnes Eschberger, Treasurer Alice Kovar answering the call. Youth Leaders Dale Kessel and Ruby Bowen were absent.

Minutes of the June meeting were read and approved. FAC and Vice President Leslie Gustafson and Treasurer Alice Kovar gave their reports. Other reports were given by Irene Helgreen of the House Committee, Ticket Chairman Gladys Mogoney, and Artie Monson on the band schedule. All reports were approved. The bar sales report was not given due to the absence of Bill Schmidt.

Mr. Schmidt had a death in his family.

Lodge 18 extends our sympathy to you and your family.

Under old business, Western Days are coming to Elgin the week of July 18 to 22. Members who can help Youth Leader Dale Kessel make hamburgers are encouraged to contact him for that Saturday. Money raised will go to the lodge.

Work days are set for Tuesday, September 5 and Wednesday, September 6. We plan to start as early as possible due to the hot weather. Much work is needed to be done. Painting will take place on September 5 and if more people show up, the cleaning can also begin on this day. All members are encouraged to help. It is hard on some of us, but it is great fun and the hours pass by fast.

Also under old business, the big celebration coming up on October 22, 1995, was discussed. This is the burning of the lodge note. Committee and chairpersons were appointed and details of the day's activities were discussed. The highlight of the celebration will be a noon meal consisting of roast beef, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, rolls, bread, pickles, onions, tea and coffee. Desserts will be baked by members. Harry Czarnek will play for the big dance from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. The noon meal and dance ticket is only $5 per person. If you do not eat lunch, the dance ticket will be $5. All

children's plates will also be $5 as this will be "serve yourself". There will be a happy hour from 12 noon until "the jugs run dry". Door prizes will also be awarded.

All officers, committees and special guests will be introduced at a short program from 1:30 to 2 p.m. A short history of the lodge will be given by a member who had a part in getting the building started some 20 years ago. The finale will be the burning of the note.

Tickets are being printed and will be sold during the dances on the schedule cards in July, August, September, and October. Also flyers will be on hand for everyone to pick up.

We are asking through the Vestnik for all Presidents of all lodges to inform their members about the big day. We invite you to come be with us and be recognized.

Under new business, Irene Helgreen and Artie Monson had questions for the members. With no other business, the lengthy meeting was adjourned.

Lodge 18 wishes everyone reading the Vestnik to keep cool and come to Elgin and let us enjoy your fellowship.

47, Seaton Reports on July Meeting

Dear Brothers and Sisters, The meeting of Lodge 47, Seaton was called to order by President Calvin Skrabanek at 2 p.m.

Flag Bearers Crystal Bartek and Janet Baca brought in the flags and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the U.S. flag. We remained standing for a moment of silent prayer in memory of our departed brothers, Reuben Mikeska, age 56, William Roy Pausewang, age 19, and Gary Allen Marek, age 12. These were all very young and are being missed by a multitude of people who knew them and especially their families. May these departed members rest in eternal peace and our sincere sympathy to the bereaving survivors.

We had one visitor, Freddie Schroeder.

Please come again. The only person on the sick list was William Roy Pausewang, who is now deceased. At this writing, Floyd Stuteville is hospitalized at the Olin E. Teague VA Hospital. Hope your health improves where you can go home, Studie. Get well soon!

The roll call of officers, trustees, and sales representatives followed. The minutes of the June 2 meeting were read by Dolores Skrabanek. The names of the newly accepted members are Michael Lee Franklin, Archie Lee McPherson, Sallie Jo Wiseman, Lawrence Graves V, Virginia Ramos, Ellen Van Winkle, and James D. Vandiver. Welcome to the family at Lodge 47 and please come to the meetings and other activities in the SPJST calendar of the Vestnik. Warm welcome to you all, again.

Correspondence included thank-you cards from high school graduates E.J. Pechal, Jr. and Kerri Meier for monetary gifts from the lodge. John Hoelscher thanked Lodge 47 for the presentation of the $500 scholarship at his high school graduation. Also, a letter was received informing us of the sale of Gaines Frozen Foods to new owners. They thanked us for using them for our lodge kitchen needs for many years.

Edwin Vasicek read the board minutes.

The plans for the restrooms for wheelchair customers are being finalized. The

membership voted for the board to go ahead with the plans as needed. The sign at the entrance is going to be replaced.

The details of the cook-off were discussed and the tickets for the drawing for the Lone Star pit were being sold.

President Skrabanek thanked everyone for working before, during and after the picnic. He especially thanked Albert Pechal, Tom Gibson, Henry Janacek, E.J. Pechal, Jr. and Judy Pechal for the cleanup on Monday on the outside, and Gladys Marek and Harry Gersbach helped the Janacek's clean the hall inside.

Vice President Edwin Pechal thanked everyone who helped in any way with the picnic. He discussed the barbecue cookoff on Friday and Saturday, July 21 and 22, and the trophies, money, judges, etc.

On Thursday, July 20, the cookers will be parking under the trees to pick a shady spot for their pit and camper. Karoake will be held as last year. The kitchen will be open on Friday evening and all day Saturday.

Second Vice President Ruth Hanusch reminded all of the Tarok Tournament at New Tabor on Saturday, July 8, the Summer Marathon being sponsored by the Supreme Lodge and the prizes they will be awarding for the prize winners.

Treasurer Lucy Mihatsch gave the monthly receipts and disbursements. The picnic report is due at the next meeting on August 13 at 2 p.m.

Financial Secretary Gladys Marek gave her report and also the winners of the prizes at the picnic. The most tickets were sold by Pearlie Faichtinger. She received the $25 donated by Jerry Mikulas to the top ticket seller. All chairpersons gave good reports.

The rules and regulations committee is to meet on Thursday, July 27. If you have any recommendations or changes, please forward these to the officers, for consideration of changes proposed, as soon as possible.

Donna Baca, assistant youth leader, gave the youth report. Present were 20 members and one guest, Josh Mihatsch.

Their activity for this month will be a swimming social at Walker Pool. The youth club members will be informed of the date. Jennifer Pechal was selected as the reporter. She is replacing Stephen Hanusch. The Six Flags Over Texas trip will be in August. Watch for the DYC's letter. The State Royalty is Saturday, August 5 at Lodge 24, Cyclone and State Youth Achievement Day is Sunday, August 6 at the. Frank Mayborn Center in Temple. Youth Leader Ginger Greger was absent because of the death of her nephew, Gary Marek.

Under new business, we changed the date for the next meeting to the second Sunday, August 13 at 2 p.m. Everyone bring a covered dish for the supper following the meeting. The lodge will furnish the meat.

Those getting a year older in July. were Brothers Willie C. Kohutek and Lonnie Schroeder and Sister Vallie Zavodny.

Belated birthday wishes to Brother Calvin Skrabanek who celebrated his birthday in June. He was already standing up so I overlooked his birthday.

84, Dallas Reports on July Meeting

President Yeagar called our meeting to order last Monday. Flag Bearer Wanda Petr led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Secretary Evelyn Salac read the minutes from last month. She then read correspondence which included letters from the Supreme Lodge, Sam's Club, and Kroger Sales Club.

The committees then reported.

Brother Ben Jarma of the Sunshine Committee sent get-well greetings to Brother John Pokladnik ("Hi Johnny") and a sympathy card to Liddie Pavelka and family on the loss of their brother.

Brother Adolph Salac of the House Committee reported that he mowed grass on the parking area and had the fire extinguisher checked. He thanked Sisters Vicky Sims and Linda Novak for cleaning the water from the seating area. He also thanked Sister Evelyn Salac, Brother Ben Jarma, Sister Cheri Petr, Sister Carlyn Ondrusek, Sister Bessie Petr and Brother Emil Petr for help received while the movie crew filming "Walker, Texas Ranger" used the lodge and parking area.

The Fraternal Activities Coordinator reported on lodge dues sent in. Brother Emil Petr read the future hall rentals.

Youth Leader Bessie Petr reported on the wonderful time our youth had at camp this year despite the hot weather.

Thanks to Lodge 84 and Rudolph's Market for hamburger patties donated for hamburger night at camp. Also, District Three Youth Achievement Day had several Lodge 84 entries and winners.

Congratulations to Queen Meribeth Novak, King C.J. Novak, Duchess Jamilyn Novak and Duke Rusty Sims who will represent District Three.

Sister Bessie also announced Kelli Sims will represent our Lodge 84 as Queen and C.J. Novak as King.

Congratulations to both. Sister Bessie thanked all who supported the teen dinner as well as the princess ball.

Congratulations to Bertha Podhrasky who was elected president of the Czech Culture Society. Sister Bessie Petr reported that October 8 is Czech Day at the State Fair of Texas so this society will be busy preparing for this event.

Sales Representative Benny Jarma announced a sales meeting and dinner being held Tuesday at Wyatt's on Interstate 35 near DeSoto. Brother Doug Yeager announced he was a candidate for Lodge 84 sales representative and asked

for approval by the lodge, which he received. He thanked all and will seek approval by the Supreme Lodge SPJST. August 13 (circle it now) is the date of the picnic at Brother Sid and Sister Justine Pokladnik's lake home. This will be a great get-together and you need only to bring your chair to sit on and a card table to place your plate on. You may also bring towels if you plan to swim.

Come out to just relax and enjoy their hospitality. Who could ask for more!

The Entertainment Committee meets on August 14 to prepare mailers for our Czech Fest on September 17. Please mark this date also on that calendar. You can come and enjoy a Czech dinner, country store, cake walk, gift booth, games, etc. and a free dance with Al Vanek's band playing from 3 to 6 p.m.

Pastry makers of our lodge are asked to bring their specialties to be served with the dinner which will be catered by Sister Bessie Petr.

Our next dance is August 5 with Alpine Village playing. On August 19, Fritz Hodde and the Fabulous Six Plus Two will entertain everyone. Remember our next meeting is on August 21.

In closing, the membership congratulates District Three Director Sid Pokladnik and Sister Justine Pokladnik on their 62nd wedding anniversary. We wish them many more years together.

84, Dallas Reports on Lodge Activities

Dear Members, By the time this letter is printed in the Vestnik, our Grayline trip on July 19th to the Isle of Capri in Louisiana will be over. As of now, the bus is full, so it should be a fun trip especially for those who hit a jackpot.

On July 6th and 7th, our lodge had theopportunity to rent our facility especially our parking lots to the production company that produces the "Walker, Texas Ranger" television program. They filmed a construction site across the street from us. They also filmed downtown in the building where Lee Harvey Oswald was shot. This was very exciting for us to be able to watch the actual filming of a television program. And to top it all off, the famous actor, Chuck Norris, sat in our lodge and ate supper.

We were told not to ask for his autograph or to take his picture. The crew had all of their own equipment, including complete outdoor catering and security by the Dallas Police Department.

During the two days of filming, they used about 100 actor extras. About 15 of those were Indians dressed in full gear— leather, feathers and all. We were told that this show will be aired this fall.

Sincere thanks to all of our members who worked on these two days.

Please note that on Sunday, August 13, from 11 a.m. until ?, Brother Sid and Sister Justine Pokladnik will be having a picnic at their house on Cedar Creek Lake. Bring your chairs and card table only as they are furnishing the food and drinks. Look for a map in an upcoming issue of the Vestnik.

88, Houston Birthday Sisters Report on July Meeting

The meeting of the Lodge 88, Houston Birthday Sisters was called to order by President Lowrina Lindemann.

The officers presented their reports.

Mary Kosut reported on cards sent. Our thoughts go out to Martha Walla and Carl Lindemann. Carl is at home but he is still a little weak.

Summer is really here for all of us. So for August, we voted to have a covered dish. The Birthday Club will supply fried chicken. Please bring lots of salads and vegetables. We voted for the telephone chairman to call all members about our covered dish luncheons.

Our kitchen workers this month were Stacy Kocich, Marie Anders, and Evelyn Gutkowsky. Thanks, sisters! You do a good job.

Calcutta winners were Margaret Spahn and Margie Anders.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Adela Kite, Evelyn Mikolas, Louise Kadlecek, Lowrina Lindemann, Margaret Spahn, Sylvia Melia, and Rosa Lee Kostom.

It was good to see Mary Johnson back with us. Also Marie Poklukda has a new great-grandchild.

Mary Kosut gave our prayer.

154, Fort Worth Reports on Lodge Activities

We extend our congratulations to Brother Donald and Sister Bonnie Steinman on the arrival of their first grandchild, Kaleigh Rose.

We extend our sincere sympathy to Brother Emil Mamula and his family on the loss of his sister in South Bend, Indiana. May she rest in peace. Brrother Frankie, Sister Martha and Josh Milan got to visit with the Mamula family on their way to Canada.

On their way home from Canada, Brother Jerry and Sister Henrietta Milan met with some dear friends in Las Vegas for a few enjoyable days.

If all goes well with me, I'll leave on August 12 for a three-week visit with my sister and family in St. Louis, Missouri, so I will miss the August 13th meeting.

We extend our congratulations to Sister Tina (Christina ) Harrison (my great niece) for doing so well in the tennis tournaments.

Memorials were made in memory of Jerry Jirik by Ray and Lydia Alholm, Jerry and Henrietta Milan, Ana Johnson, Jeanie Mason and Mary Pavey.

I am doing better and bless you all for your good wishes.

We will have a country and western dance on August 12 with David Boyd and Country Junction. The dance starts at 8:30 p.m. and admission is $5 per person.

177, Academy Reports on July Meeting

President Otis Beck called the July meeting to order on July 12. The members stood and recited the Pledge.

Two visitors were introduced. They were Jack Sidles from the St. Vincent de Paul Society and George Steglich from the Bartlett Youth League. They were present to accept a $250 donation for each organization.

Libbie Bartek reported that a get-well card was sent to Bill and Irene Johnson.

Wishing both of you good health.

Roll call of officers was made and all were present. Minutes of the last meeting were read by Secretary Kathy Fritz and were approved as read. Kathy also read thank-you cards from the Albin Driska family; from Scott & White for a memorial for Albin Driska; and from the family of Bessie Moore.

All chairperson reports were also presented. Fraternal Activities Coordinator Joanne Smith acknowledged July anniversaries and birthdays. Janet and Butch Lyon celebrated their anniversary and Martha Garcia celebrated her birthday. Plans for a social will be discussed at a later date.

New members written were Christina Beck and Elizabeth and Samantha Guerra. These members were accepted into our lodge. Hope to see you at our next meeting.

Dear Members and Friends, The Youth Achievement Day hosted by our lodge on June 25 had a real good turn out. Everyone seemed to have a god time. I was taken to see the program and saw a lot of good talent.

All of our travelers from Canada returned home safely and had a wonderful time.

Our July 9 meeting was held in Decateur, celebrating Brother C.L. and Sister Pati Gage's son's birthday. There were more than 100 in attendance in addition to a lot of good food and games.

Abbe Eaton, our young member from Chicago, is spending time with her grandmother and great-grandmother, Sister Mary Jean Stoppelman and Sister Mary Renfro. Her mother, Sister Kelly Eaton, will join them after August 1.

He asked that we excuse Gene McBride and Frances for not being present because their daughter Amy Cortasie and granddaughter were in a car accident. The lodge expressed their concerns and we hope that Amy and her daughter will be all right and get to feeling better soon.

There was no old business and Bob announced that Lodge 200 will host the State Volleyball Tournament in November again. It will be a double elimination tournament this year. Keep an eye on the Vestnik for more information.

Bob announced that the SPJST Marathon sales drive has now begun. He handed out the cards to members for mailing the names of perspective members to the Supreme Lodge.

Then the discussion turned towards our youth club. Cheryl Brook resigned as youth club leader and will remain as an assistant leader. Amy Cortasie will be Lodge 200's new youth club leader. At our August meeting, President Bob Miracle will install the newly elected youth club officers. They are:

She stated that we have five young people from Lodge 200 going to SPJST camp. Mrs. Koslovsky also announced a SPJST trip to Six Flags by bus.

Fort Worth Friendship Club Reports on July Meeting Our July meeting was cancelled due to the bad weather; but later that day it turned out beautiful. So many members called and said that they wouldn't make the meeting. So it was best to cancel.

Our August meeting is Wednesday, August 2. We will meet at 10:45 a.m. at the Ole Country Kitchen on Highway 183 next to the Olive Garden just before you get to Ridgmar Mall.

Roy Alholm returned home safely from his trip. He met with his brother from Washington State and visited their relatives in Finland. From all reports, it was an enjoyable visit to a country where in the summer, it is daylight around the clock. Santa Claus has his year-round headquarters at a city named Rovaniemi, located on the Arctic Circle.

Seated on Santa's lap, Roy professed his behavior has been good. Santa's reindeer were in a nearby pasture grazing and resting up for the next strenuous midnight journey.

The Christian Sisters of ticker Brethren Church at Zabcikville will sponsor a Country Quilt Show and . Bazaar on Saturday. August 12 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It will be in the church's Fellowship Building. The church is located on Highway 53, about 11 miles east of Temple.

An admission fee of $2 will be charged. Children under 12 will be admitted free. In addition to viewing the quilts, refreshments will be served and quilt booklets will be furnished to identify the various quilts. Quilt patterns will he available for a minimal charge.

The following classifications will be shown: antique-historical (before 1933), patchwork, applique, friendship, embroidery, tie-tac, machine-made, crib, children's and others.

Quilts will be labeled with the name of the person providing the quilt or quilts.

Other handmade articles will be shown.

Love offerings are being accepted for a queen-sized quilt which was made by members of the Christian Sisters. The pattern is called "Iris Chain". Any members of the Christian Sisters will accept offerings. A name for the quilt will be drawn at the end of the show. You do not have to be present to be eligible for this drawing.

Door prizes will be given away each hour and you do need to be present for these drawings.

Handmade items and baked goods will be for sale in the Country Bazaar.

Signs will be posted on Highway 53 to identify the church.

Two Youth Set Six Flags Trip For Saturday, August 12

District Six Youth Counselor Reports on Camp

Dear Members, Members of District Two will enjoy a summer trip to Six Flags Over Texas on Saturday, August 12.

Buses furnished by District Two will leave the Home Office at 7:15 a.m. Plans are to spend the entire day and evening at Six Flags. Buses will depart Six Flags at midnight. With enough requests, there will be a bus coming back earlier, leaving Six Flags at 7 p.m.

I will be purchasing tickets at a group rate of $21.95 per person. Tickets at the gate are $30.12. I will need to have the tickets paid in advance by August 1.

Please check with your lodge youth leader for more details.

This is a district trip and all members of District Two are invited—youth, parents, grandparents, and other members.

Friends outside of SPJST may be invited if there are extra seats on the buses.

Hope to see all of you on Saturday, August 12 for a fun day at Six Flags.

Dear 'Vestnik Readers, On the weekend of June 30, July 1 and July 2, a group of 62 SPJST youth and adults from Lodge 4, Hallettsville, Lodge 28, East Bernard, Lodge 30, Taiton, Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje, and Lodge 97, Placedo attended District Six summer camp at Camp Lone Star in LaGrange.

Sharon Borak, Brandi Dum, Nicole Dum, Jeanine Dorotik, Sarah Dluhos, Michael Kaspar, Bradley Krpec, Elizabeth Wagner, Jeremy Kalmus, Tucker Scott, and James Svetlik served as leaders-intraining (LITs) for the camping weekend.

These youth attended LIT Retreat and were in charge of helping out with various responsibilities at camp, such as, flag ceremonies, devotionals, party planning, games, dancing and singing.

The camp opened Friday afternoon with District Youth Counselor Marcy Dorotik giving introductions, rules and cabin assignments. Once everyone was settled in, activities began with all the youth going swimming.

After supper, the campers enjoyed battling their opponents with water guns while they played war games. They then teamed up to play various games and finished with some dancing. Before going to bed, we ended our day with refreshments and a devotional.

Saturday morning activities began with campers singing some of their traditional and favorite camp songs followed by swimming. Before lunch, we then broke into two groups. One group worked on the camp craft while the others made Mardi Gras masks and went on a scavenger hunt. Following lunch, the two groups switched. This year's camp craft was sea shell wind chimes. I would like to thank chaperone Scott Duchmasclo for his help in coming up with the idea for this craft and also his help in getting everybody together for it.

The wind chimes turned out to be very pretty and the youth had a good time making them. Thanks, Scott!

That afternoon, the campers enjoyed more swimming and watermelons for refreshments. Free time was then spent the rest of the afternoon.

On Saturday night, the LITs hosted a Mardi Gras Ball for the SPJST campers.

Various campers and chaperones dressed up in costumes for the ball. The LITs held a contest for those campers who wore costumes. The winner of the "Best Costume" was Kirby Bubela, who dressed as a bridesmaid. Bethany Dluhos had the "Most Original" costume. She was dressed as a LaBamba dancer. "Best Overall" award for the chaperones went to Lisa Bubela and Monica Staff, who dressed as Ma and Pa Kettle.

The main event of the evening was the Queen of the Mardi Gras Ball pageant.

Mistresses of Ceremonies for the pageant were Jeanine Dorotik and Sarah Dluhos.

Participants in the pageant were Miss Puerto Rico (Bradley Krpec) doing a ballet dance; Miss Las Vegas (Brandi Dum) doing a tap dance; Miss California (Jeremy Kalmus) singing the Star Spangled Banner; Miss New York (Nicole Dum) doing a twirling routine; and Miss Palm Springs (Michael Kaspar) showing his talents with a hula hoop.

Two King Looks Forward to 1995-96 Reign

Dear Members and Friends, I have been a member of the SPJST for 15 years, and I have been active in the Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club for over one and one-half years. I enjoy participating in the SPJST youth club because it provides young people with many fun and educational opportunities.

I am very excited to be the 1995-96 District Two King. I really enjoyed the Youth Achievement Day on Sunday, July 9 at Lodge 187, Round Rock. YAD is a great opportunity for young people to display, their talents in various categories.

Congratulations to all of the YAD participants around the state who took the initiative to participate.

My duke Scott Hudson and I are looking forward to working with the lovely District Two Queen Allyson Holman and her duchess Lacy Cervenka. We hope to represent the district in many events during 1995-96. I also really look forward to meeting many new people throughout the district.

Thanks to my parents, Jerry and Linda Koliha; my duke, Scott Hudson; Scott's parents, Carroll and Faye Hudson; my youth leader, Melanie Zavodny; and my assistant youth leader, David Nauert for all of their support and encouragement.

I wish all State Royalty and State YAD participants the best of luck in their competitions on August 5 and 6.

Pearls of Bohemia (From Pearls of Bohemia)

Pisek The town is—by its origin—a Royal Town. It was founded before 1254 and got its name according to gold-bearing sand washed at the Otava River for gold.

There are many noteworthy architectural sights in Pisek. The late 13th century stone bridge that arches over the Otava is Bohemia's oldest bridge of its kind.

The Klet On the top of the Klet (1083 m) stands one of the country's oldest look-out towers constructed in 1825. It continues to offer a magnificent panoramic view of the surrounding region. When the weather cooperates and visibility is good, even parts of the Austrian Alps can be seen from the Klet.

The Vyssi Brod Monastery The Cistercian monastery was founded as early as in 1259 by Vok of Rosenberg. Its construction, however, was not been finished until the end of the 14th century. The monastery became an important center of economy, power, and culture. The extensive library stocks nearly 70,000 books, artifacts and manuscripts of immense historical value. Of no less importance is the display of 17th and 18th century European painting.

The Giant Mountains The Giant Mountains are the most important Bohemian region for both summer hiking and winter sports activities. Being a unique natural phenomenon, almost the whole area belongs to the Giant Mountain National Park. The dominant peak of the ridge on the border with Poland is Snezka (1602 m), Bohemia's highest mountain.

Our youth meeting was July 16 and we had hamburgers outside celebrating the Fourth of July. We will also be making fifties decorations for the Moody Nursing Home on July 20.
