Governor Bush Signs Proclamation Designating Czech Heritage Week in Texas
On June 14, 1995, Texas Governor George Bush signed a resolution from the Texas House of Representatives and Senate designating the last week in October as Czech Heritage Week in Texas. The resolution was sponsored by Representative Robert Saunders of La Grange and Senator Ken Armbrister of Victoria. The idea was conceived by Fayette County Judge Edward F. Janecka, who helped write the resolution. The week was selected because of historical significance and it will allow the schools to educate the children of Texas and the general populations about the great ethnic diversity of the State. Pictured above, with Governor Bush at the signing of the proclamation are, from left: Carmen Cernosek, Fayette County Judge Ed Janecka, Lisa Craven, State Senator Ken Armbrister, State Representative Robert Saunders and Martha Goldfarb.

Pictured above are the Texas delegates to the (Cesko-Slovanska Podporujici Spolanost) Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1896 where the movement to form a separate fraternal Society in Texas gained momentum. Leading the reform from Texas were I.J. Gallia and J.R. Kubena. Brother Gallia went on to serve as the first and third president of the Society and Brother Kubena served as secretary for more than 40 years. During the meeting of the SPJST Supreme Lodge last week, officers and directors discussed plans for the 100th Anniversary celebration set for July 12 and 13, 1997 in Temple, Texas. SPJST members are encouraged to mark these days on their calendars and help join in the celebration. The above photo is by Jno. P. Trlica of Granger, Texas and is one of many historic images that track the growth and development of the SPJST and are on display at the SPJST Museum in Temple.
