Congratulations to Anna Faltisek

Lodge 184, Moulton member achieves "Grand Age of 96" The SPJST congratulates Sister Anna Straka Faltisek, a member of Lodge 184, Moulton who celebrated her 96th birthday on March 15, 1995. As such, Sister Anna is entitled to all SPJST membership benefits with no further dues or assessments required.

Anna had three sisters and four brothers.

Her brother John Straka lives in San Angelo, Texas.

On November 25, 1916, Anna married Andrew Faltisek in Rowena, Texas. The Faltiseks had one daughter, Ruby Ecker, who currently lives in San Angelo. Mr. Faltisek passed away on June 5, 1983.

Make It a Summer to Remember "Understanding the need and then working to meet it,"-that's the theme of an inspiring book called Power Thoughts

by Robert Schuller. While I won't try to condense his message in a couple of paragraphs, I will say that he provides a refreshing glimpse of what life can be like when we focus and work on turning our obstacles into opportunities.

"Look for blessings disguised as problems and you'll move forward," he says.

I believe that he's right.

"Plan for success," he continues. It may sound pretty basic, but how many of us-in our personal lives and in our lodge endeavors-really take time out to plan for success? With the summer months ahead of us, the time is ripe for team planning. Planning time for everyone. Let's start doing it now and we'll be ready this fall and winter when it comes time for our annual meetings.

What a wonderful way to start 1996.

With a detailed plan, specifying what we will accomplish in the coming year-and how we will do it.

"Make it as detailed as possible. Make the plan neat and easy to review. A good plan for success is priceless. You can't spend enough positive time making a plan for success," Schuller advises.

Make this summer a summer to remember. Look for the positives in all that you do. In your life. In your lodge.

And, in your Society. The SPJST is a great idea for the future! Think about why we're here: We're here to provide financial security and social interaction.

Let's get together this summer and talk about ideas for progressing next year and beyond. And let there be only one ground rule: Be flexible. Inviting contrasting viewpoints is an essential part of our democratic process. No active member is too old or too young to have a good idea.

May our dreams-and not our regrets-be our guide. We create a growth environment when we invite challenges to rise to the surface. Through open discussions and earnest objectives, we become more effective. New prosperity is just waiting to unfold . . .

So, why all the talk about food? Aside from the fact that I always like to eat, you may recall how last summer we requested readers to send in their "old time" recipes for publication in the Vestnik. We thought it would be fun, once again, to see if anybody had any special recipes or canning ideas to share with other Vestnik readers.

We've already got what looks like a good one here. It's a sure-fire canning recipe for sauerkraut from Brother Julius Zella of Lodge 172, Pasadena. Anyone who knows Brother Zella knows that he knows his sauerkraut. I first had a chance to sample his specialty about two years ago at a District Five Fall Meeting.

His recipe is as follows: Shred five pounds of cabbage. Mix in two ounces of salt and "as much chopped dill as you care to add," Brother Julius says. "Then just let it sit for five or six hours ... That allows the cabbage to wilt just a little and lets you to put that more into your jars," he explains.

Seal the filled jars loosely and allow sauerkraut to "seep" for about a week.

Then screw the lids on tightly and wash off the residue. The sauerkraut will be ready to prepare in about six or seven weeks.

To prepare the cured sauerkraut, simply empty a quart into a pot and cook over a low heat. Fry two long strips of bacon till jus about crisp; chop and add to the pot. After about 45 minutes, add a mixture of one shredded raw potato mixed with a tablespoon of flour and a tea- Brother Julius Zella spoon of caraway presents his specialty. seeds. Continue cooking five or ten more minutes over a low heat. Stir frequently to keep flour mixture from sticking. If you're a sauerkraut fan, it's a real treat ...

In exchange for sharing his sauerkraut expertise, Brother Zella encourages readers with recipes for homemade yeast to share their secrets with -him and other Vestnik readers. Likewise, readers with any other special canning or food preparation ideas are encouraged to share their ideas with us in the coming months.

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 4, Hallettsville Reports on May Meeting Dear Members, Our lodge met on Sunday, May 14, 1995, at the Hallettsville Youth Center at 2 p.m. President Joe Siptak called the meeting to order. The Pledge to the flag and songs followed.

Secretary Erwin Holy read a resolution of sympathy for our departed brother, John J. Galetka. A moment of silence followed.

Secretary Erwin Holy then read the minutes from the last meeting. They were approved. Treasurer Helen Zabransky and Fraternal Activities Coordinator Lillie Balusek reported.

Sunshine Chairman Elsie Mascheck reported that around 55 residents of Stevens Convalescent Center attended our monthly bingo. Following the games, cake was served. Members donating a cake were: Elsie Mascheck,

Margaret Smotek, Vicky Zak, and Patsy and Helen Zabransky. Volunteers assisting were: Joe and Lillie Balusek, Mary Matula, Kathryn Woytek, Margaret Smotek, Vicky Zak, and Elsie Mascheck.

Youth Leader Annie Vahalik gave a report on their various activities including the district meeting, Mother's Day gifts, and a trip to Fiesta, Texas on June 11.

The youth welcomed two new members, Constance and Kyle Prasek. Marcy Dorotik, District Youth Counselor, was to meet with the youth later on that day.

The meeting was then adjourned. The youth then honored the mothers by spelling "M-O-T-H-E-R" and giving a meaning for each letter. Taking part were: John and Brian Richardson, Adam and Joshua Siptak, Elizabeth Wagner, and James Svetlik.

Members present with a birthday in April, May, or June were: Viola Holly, Jeremy Kalmus, Adam Siptak, Helen Zabransky, and John Richardson. Viola Holly won the cake which was baked by Elsie Mascheck.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood recognized and honored its lodge volunteers at the May meeting. Those volunteers qualified under the rules of the "Everyday Heroes" program. All of these volunteers accomplished 50 or 100 acts of fraternal service.

We want to recognize all of our volunteers who throughout the year did volunteer acts. We need for all of you

to complete the volunteer acts papers that are handed out at the beginning of the year from your lodge fraternal activities coordinator, Robert Dobecka.

Bingo was played and enjoyed.

President Siptak gave the lunch prayer before a delicious lunch was served and enjoyed. Adolf Motal led the members in several Czech songs and played Czech music for the members to enjoy.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, June 11 beginning at 2 p.m. in the Hallettsville Youth Center. Lunch will be served as usual.

15, Buckholts Tarok Tournament June 10

Lodge

Lodge 15, Buckholts invites you to come out and join our tarok tournament this Saturday, June 10, 1995, with registration to begin at 8:30 and play begins at 9:30 a.m.

The food and entry fee is $15, which includes door prizes, game prizes, snacks and the noon meal.

Lodge 24, Cyclone to Honor 50-Year Members on June 12 On Monday, June 12, along with our regular monthly meeting, we will be hon oring those individuals who have been members of the SPJST for 50 years.

This is an important day for those members. Please come and celebrate with them. Along with this celebration, we will be patting ourselves on the backs as we enjoy a catered meal that evening.

All the members, officers, and past officers, along with their families, who work so hard at our lodge at dances, fund raisers, meetings, etc. are asked to please come and join us.

The funds for the meal were made possible through the efforts and hard work of our sales representatives who allowed us to receive a monetary award from the society at a recent banquet and ceremony. Please try to make our celebration day on June 12 at 7 p.m.

39, Bryan to Meet Sunday, June 18 Lodge

Just a reminder that the June meeting will be starting with a fried chicken meal at 12:30 p.m. Each family is asked to bring a salad, dessert, or your choice to go with fried chicken. The lodge will provide the meat, tea, and coffee, etc.

We have had a hard time trying to work out a set schedule for our meetings and meals due to our new lodge home.

We hope to now have arrived at a time that we can retain for the rest of this year.

The meetings will be at our lodge home every third Sunday of the month.

The meal is at 12:30 p.m., and the meeting is at 1:30 p.m. Play and social time will follow the meeting. The lodge will provide the meat and each family is asked to bring a side dish or dessert.

Our youth club is having a grand time.

So if you have children, please bring them. They need not be members, but they will have a good time. We have a beautiful trail through the woods and a running water small creek. The youth leaders always have lots of nice educational things for the children to do. So come join the fun.

Shelly received an English IV award, the Claudia Davis Memorial Award for her outstanding leadership, academic success, and athletic achievements, the Cadet Academic Award for her contributions to athletics and maintaining the highest grade point average of 96.107 in girls ath-

letics, chosen Who's Who, and in the top ten percen of her class. She has received a MCC scholarship, a $500 SPJST scholarship, $500 CDA State scholarship and $250 Shelly Parma Connally Athletic Club Booster scholarship.

Shelly was also recently selected to the YWCA Academic All Stars Basketball Classic at McLennan Community College.

Shelly was chosen to represent the North Cheerleaders. She is head varsity cheerleader at Connally High School and a member of the varsity basketball and volleyball teams. She was chosen Second Team All District in Volleyball and KWTX Channel 10 Classroom Champion. Parma is also a member of FCA, Student Council, and Treasurer of National Honor Society.

Shelly is the daughter of Ray and Rose Parma of Elm Mott and the granddaughter of Edmund and Estelle Marek of Penelope and Rosalie Parma of Bel lmead.

Shelly, her maternal grandparents and paternal grandmother are all members of SPJST Lodge 54, West.

Lodge Vice President Terry Sefcik had the honor to present the SPJST scholarship to Shelly during the awards' presentations.

Lodge 63, Sweet Home to Meet Sunday, June 11 Due to our regular monthly meeting falling on Father's Day in June, our meeting and social will be held on June 11, 1995, at the Sweet Home Community Center beginning at noon.

A barbecue chicken dinner, furnished by the lodge, will be served at 12:30 p.m.

Members are asked to bring a dessert.

Immediately following the meal, a short business meeting will be conducted.

Anyone with a birthday in April, May or June is eligible to win a cake baked by Millie Kutac. Door prizes will also be awarded.

Since this meeting falls between Mother's Day and Father's Day, we will honor all the fathers and mothers that are present. We usually also honor our 50year pin recipients at this meeting but this year they are unable to attend.

After the meeting, we will be playing games and visiting. The children will also have some entertainment set up.

Please note the change in date. Come out and enjoy the fellowship in Sweet Home on June 11.

sented the flags and led the Pledge of Allegiance and the SPJST motto.

A moment of silence was observed for our deceased member, Sister Rose Parma.

We extend our deepest sympathy to her family.

Brother Keith Gatewood, President, read a letter of resignation from Sister Sharon Tierce, Youth Leader, effective May 31. Sister Diana Engelke was elected by acclamation to fill this position.

New members accepted in Lodge 66 were Thomas Jayson Strawser and Johnny Boyd, Jr. who transferred from Lodge 182 to Lodge 66. We welcome you and hope you will attend our meetings and join in the activities.

We were happy to have Ernest Engelke as a visitor, and his wife, Emma Ruth, of Lawton, Oklahoma. This was Sister Emma Ruth's first time to attend a meeting even though she has been a member for 25 years. The couple is Bennie Engelke's brother and sister-inlaw.

Sister Mary Alice Langlotz, Fraternal Activities Coordinator, reported there were 15 adults and three youth club members present for our game night on May 8. Susan Trickett won the door prize. All had fun and enjoyed the games, food, and fellowship. Our next game night is June 12.

Congratulations to our teams that participated in the horseshoe tournament at State level. Lodge 66 had the largest number participating with six teams entered. Also, at District level, Lodge 66 took all honors at the District Three meeting in Dallas. Mary Alice stated she was proud of our lodge and of all the members for taking part in these types of events.

Congratulations to Tracy Urech on winning a freshman scholarship. Tracy is the daughter of Beverly and Everett Urech and the granddaughter of Johnnie and Polly Gaidusek of Lodge 66, Waco.

Any student that applied for an SPJST Scholarship but did not win, can apply in the fall.

Congratulations to John Engelke who will serve as District Three President for the coming year. Also, congratulations to Diane Engelke and Darlene Engelke for winning in the needlecraft division at the District meeting.

Sister Bonnie Pruitt reported get-well cards were sent to James Yates and Irene Mueller. Sympathy cards were sent to Daniel Nors on the loss of his brother, and to Lillian Parma, Rosemary Adair and Helen Woodbury on the loss of their mother, Sister Rose Parma. A cheer card was sent to Blanche Lewis.

We were so glad to see Dan and Leona Nors present at our meeting after being absent for about six months due to Dan's illness. They seemed so happy to be back—Leona having fun playing "42" and Dan participating in his favorite game—Taroky. But on the following Tuesday, May 23, we were shocked and very saddened to learn that Dan had died at his home in Abbott early that morning.

Rosary was on May 25 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Abbott. Mass of Christian Burial was on May 26 at the Church and interment was in Fatima Cemetery near Abbott. We extend our deepest sympathy and condolences to Leona, and the children, Barbara J. Brem, Eugene D. Nors, and Danny R. Nors and their families. Please remember them in your prayers.

The youth club activity report was given by Diana Engelke. Nine youth and four adults attended the meeting. They have been very busy with all their activities and are all looking forward to camp

in July. Jody McAdams furnished the birthday cake. The youth honored all mothers in attendance and presented each with a beautiful carnation.

New officers in the youth club were elected. They were installed by President Gatewood. The new youth club officers are: President—Brandy McAdams; Vice President—Candice McAdams; Secretary—Alicia Neslony; Reporter—Amanda Neslony; Treasurer—Justin Engelke; Telephone Committee—Shane Pruitt and Jody McAdams; Sunshine Committee— Sandra and Jamie Trickett and Sergeantat-Arms Butch Wigley.

Further plans for our fun day on Sunday, August 13 were discussed and a number of good suggestions were submitted. A committee will draw up the plans fo'r the day. Those serving on this committee are Gladys Yates, Mary Alice Langlotz, Dana McAdams, Diana Engelke, Bob Cervenka, Jewel Warhol, Libbie Parma, and Johnnie Gaidusek.

Mark your calendars on August 13 and plan to join in on activities for that special day.

We regret Irene Mueller has been ill and will be unable to continue her duties as Secretary of the Rules and Regulations Committee. 81, Needville Reports on May Meeting

Lodge

It was a beautiful springtime day on Sunday, May 21, 1995, when the Needville SPJST Lodge 81 met. What was also so great was the fact that we had 60 wonderful people to come out for the dinner that was served at noon and for the business meeting at 1 p.m.

Three of the 60 people present were guests. They were Louise Faltisek of Wallis, Mary Tydlacka, and Edward Palat. Louise is the sister of Frances Kubala, Mary Tydlacka is the Wife of Brother Michael Tydlacka and Edward Palat of Clute is the brother of A.G. Palat.

We were delighted to have each of you attend our lodge family gathering. You are always welcome.

The entree of chicken fried steak was furnished by the lodge. The lodge sisters prepared a large variety of delicious veg-

etables, salads, and desserts. Sister Mary Werner thanks everyone who brought the food and helped in the kitchen. Thanks also to President Macha for going to get the steaks.

President Macha called the meeting to order at 1 p.m. Vincent Newman led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

A moment of silence was observed in memory of our departed brother, Russell Straznicky. May he rest in peace.

Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes for the month of April. After a minor correction was made, the minutes were then approved. The monthly financial report from Treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendall was accepted as read.

Gilbert Walzel, our Special Fund Treasurer, reported on the events scheduled for the lodge hall in the coming month. His special fund report was accepted as read.

On the sick list are Edwin Susan, Jerry Blinka, Emma Jean Miller, and Willie Miller. It was good to see Edwin Susan at the meeting. Edwin is recuperating from surgery. He also thanked everyone for the phone calls and get-well cards.

Selma Bednarek, my mother, is going to have surgery on both of her knees at Fort Bend Community Hospital:in Missouri City. Everyone is wished a complete recovery. God bless each of you.

Vincent Newman, our vice president, received a letter from the Supreme Lodge in Temple. Our lodge received many compliments about the wonderful job we all are doing. A congratulatory note accompanied the above information.

Gilbert and Benita Walzel and Adolph and Delores Macha received a beautiful pen for more than 100 hours of charitable work. Edwin and Winnie Susan and Willie Mae Kuykendall received letter openers for their 50 charitable hours.

ment of delicious fruit. To be eligible to win this prize, the name of each mother present was put into a box. Since Elsie donated the prize, she had the honor, of drawing the lucky winner's name. The lucky mother was Mary Tydlacka of Rosenberg. She is the mother of three fine young sons, Thomas, Jonathan, and Nick. Delores and Adolph Macha presented the oldest mother present with a beautiful red rose in a vase. The mother winning that award was Sister Vlasta Nowotny. She is 88 years young and is the mother of one daughter, Joyce.

Congratulations to Mary and Vlasta.

Brother Ben Tydlacka was celebrating his 81st birthday on the day of our meeting. Happy Birthday, Ben, and may you be blessed with many more.

Since our next meeting falls on Father's Day, it was decided to change our meeting to the second Sunday.

Ladies, bring your favorite vegetable or salad and dessert After the meeting was adjourned, the estate planning seminar was held. Thirtyseven people attended, many were our non-member friends. Jerry Cumby pre sented the seminar which proved to be very interesting and educational. Thanks to Jerry and his partner, Gene Sprung, for making this presentation to u& Thanks to all who came. We also appreciate the extra desserts that were brought so that we could serve refreshments after the seminar. Thanks, ladies.

This past weekend, our area was blessed with a wonderful rain. Variable amounts fell throughout the area The crops are looking real good.

Father's Day is June 18. We all need to remember and honor our fathers whether they are living or deceased.

92, Fort Worth to Meet June 11

Dear Members and Friends, My, what a month of May we have had! Tornadoes, floods, high winds, large hail, earthquake& . . Maybe June will be a better month. Here in Fort Worth, the hail was the largest I have seen in my lifetime. No joke—the hail was the size of tennis balls. It really has done lots of damage to houses and automobiles.

Many houses now need new shingles on the roofs.

More sad news—one of our dear lodge members, Sister Anna (Paparska) Juren, who has been in a nursing home for five or six years passed away this morning, May 30, 1995. Just a few days back, she had a leg amputated around the knee. Sister Anna was 85 years of age.

In her younger days, she was very active in the lodge. She was, always on some kind of committee. She was proud to

help the lodge in any way she could. She was the daughter of one of our charter members. Sister Anna Juran is survived by her husband, Joseph (Joe) Juran. They had been married for over 60 years. She is survived by one daughter, Mary Ann Gibson; one son, Joe Juran, Jr.; brothers, Joe Paparskar of Dallas, Mike Paparskar and Charlie Paparskar, both of Fort Worth; and four grandchildren. Sister Anna, although unable to walk, came to the dances in a wheel chair and was pushed around the dance floor dancing like she did when she was younger.

Anna, we all will miss you and may you now have eternal rest. All members of Lodge 92 send condolences to her surviving family.

The next lodge meeting will be June 11 starting at 2 p.m. so let's all be on time. We will have several items to discuss but maybe the meeting will not be long.

We want to congratulate two of our lodge members who received scholarships. They are Brother Jason Brezina and Sister Brandy Kubala. Jason is the son of Brother and Sister Jerry Brezina, and Brandy is the daughter of Brother and Sister Larry Kubala of Pilot Point.

Brother Albert Kubala and Helen presented the scholarship to their granddaughter, Brandy. They will send a photo and write-up. Sister Christine presented the scholarship to Jason Brezina at his home. We also congratulate all graduates who have finished 12 years of school.

Frank E. Prochaska, son of Frank J. Prochaska of Arlington, Texas, has graduated from the Jesuit College of Preparatory on May 27, 1995. Frank will attend Texas A&M in the fall. His grandparents are Josephine (Jo) and Frank Prochaska of Lodge 92. Their home is in Azle, Texas.

There will be no polka dances during the months of June and July, due to the lodge being rented for several weddings and anniversaries. But do not forget that starting in August, there will be polka dancing again. The annual hat dance will be in August with the Sulak Band from Ennis. Watch for more on this in my future letters.

Game nights will keep going so if you want a night of fun, come on the first and third Tuesdays of each month starting at 7 p.m. And the Friday night ball room dances will still continue.

139, Danbury Reports on May Meeting

Lodge

On May 10, Lodge 139, Danbury met for dinner and a meeting at the Home Place Restaurant.

Among the correspondence was a letter from Erna Everspacher thanking the lodge for the party in honor of her 96th birthday.

Our president, Lonnie Lostak, was congratulated for having been re-elected to another term on the Danbury School Board. He won the election by a wide margin.

Attention all Lodge 139 members: Beginning in June, the lodge meeting will be permanently changed to the first Wednesday of the month. Also, at our June 7 meeting, we will start our summer schedule of the meetings starting at 8 p.m. We will continue meeting at the Danbury City Hall.

97, Placedo Reports on Polka Fest There were clear skies on Sunday, May 21, over Inez Hall, only a short distance from Victoria. Persons came from many miles around to enjoy good music

by Leo Majek's Orchestra, Vrazel's Polka Band, and Vanek's Brothers Band.

While others were munching down on kolaches, the more serious appetites were having turkey and dressing with all the trimmings or a big Texas hamburger and fries.

The youth group set up a raffle on the items they have been working hard on.

This will support the youth for a summer trip to the rain forest in Galveston.

The winners of the raffle held by the lodge were Darwin Foerster, W.L. Reimann, Kenneth Fuzzell, Helen Pavelka, J.W. Craig, Doris Elsik, Linda Hahn, Angie Spross, and Sam Cavett.

Kathleen Garret Ray was the winner of a 13-inch color television for selling the most raffle tickets prior to the polka fest.

Broadcasting time from the festival was from 1 to 5 p.m. Members and guests were interviewed by KIXS radio station. The spotlight was shared by our youth members. Radio station KIXS

155, Austin Invites Members to Summer Picnic This Sunday, June 10 Lodge

Mrs. Matt Vanek and family made kolaches for days preparing for the festival. More than 100 dozen were sold and enjoyed by all during the festival.

The summer picnic of Lodge 155, Austin will be held Saturday, June 10 at 3 p.m. at the Deer Creek Lodges, located off Hamilton Pool Road. Signs will be posted starting at the entrance to Deer Creek Lodges.

Czech Heritage Society of Texas to Meet This Saturday at Lodge 88, Houston The Summer State Meeting of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas will be held Saturday, June 10, 1995, at SPJST Lodge 88 located at 1435 Beal Road in Houston. The Harris County Chapter is hosting the meeting.

Registration is at 9:30 a.m. with coffee and kolaches, visiting and sharing family histories and information. Bring your cultural displays, books, and photographs.

Lunch will be served at 11 a.m.

The program will begin at noon. Dr. Robert Skrabanek, Emeritus Professor of Sociology at Texas A&M University and author of We're Czechs, will speak on our Texas Czech heritage.

In 1949, when Skrabanek was writing his sociology doctoral dissertation at Louisiana State University, he used his growing up years on the farm as a background. His professors encouraged him to make it into a book. It wasn't until he retired after 35 years at A&M that he found, time to rewrite it as a reminiscence of the simple life in the small community of Snook in the 1920s and 30s when it had no running water, no electricity, and no hard-surfaced roads, when the days were spent in intensive farm work but the evenings were spent with Czech benevolent societies and polka bands.

The book was first printed in 1988, second printing in 1989 and now it is getting ready for its third printing. If anyone has "We're Czechs", bring it to the meeting and the author will autograph, it for you.

The business meeting begins at 1 p.m.

Lodge 196 Members Enjoy Fellowship

Members of Lodge 196, Houston-West gathered recently at the home of Mr. and Mrs. D.O. Hutto for their regular meeting and barbecue. One of the big discussion topics was construction of a new lodge home at 17810 Huffmeister Road in Northwest Harris County. Lodge 196 will be meeting for a picnic at the building site on Sunday June 11. All members and other interested individuals are encouraged to attend.

Activities are set to get underway at 5 p.m.

Lodge 196, Houston-West Reports on Lodge Activities On Sunday, April 30, members of Lodge 196 met at the home of Mr. and Mrs. D.O. Hutto for their quarterly lodge meeting. President Robert Castillo opened the meeting by leading the Pledge of Allegiance. All officers answered roll call.

We were delighted to have Mrs. Dorothy Hutto and District Five Director Louis Hanus as our visitors. We look forward to seeing you again, soon.

Two new members were welcomed into the lodge. We hope to get to know them better as we all work side by side.

After all of the correspondence was read and discussed, Mr. Hanus talked to us on matters pertaining to our new building. He gave us some good ideas on raising money for furnishings for our new lodge building. We greatly appreciate his input, interest and help in all these business matters.

After the meeting adjourned, we enjoyed an informal fellowship and barbecue dinner.

We want to thank Mr. and Mrs. Hutto for their hospitality and a fine social.

Our next meeting will be June 11 at the sight of our new building. The address is 17810 Huffmeister Road, located in Northwest Harris County. The time will be from 5-8 p.m. Bring a picnic lunch and chairs. Hope to see you there.

Ennis Sewing Circle

Reports on May Meeting The Ennis Sewing Circle met on May 11, 1995. There were 25 members and three visitors present. The visitors were Charles Kosarek, Julius Podhrasky and Willie Skrivanek.

President Sadie Kubin called the meet-

ing to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

Assistant Secretary Vlasta Laznovsky read the minutes from the last meeting.

She recorded the minutes of this meeting.

Treasurer Mildred Trojacek gave the financial report. Both reports were approved as given.

Stacie Hejny of the Sunshine Committee sent a get-well card and money gift to Sister Anne Zvolanek, a sympathy card to Sister Mary Polasek and a get-well card signed by all present at the meeting to Sister Anne Zvolanek.

A thank-you note from Sister Anne Zvolanek for the get-well card and the money gift was read. Anne is recuperating very nicely. "Happy Birthday" was sung to the May birthday celebrants.

President Sadie Kubin thanked everyone who helped and donated items for the arts and crafts booth at the Polka Festival.

Congratulations to Theresa Young. She was the winner of the quilt. Thanks to sister Rose Bednar for finishing the quilts several times when the quitters did not finish quilting at the meetings. This work is greatly appreciated, Rose. A quilt was made for Sister Mildred Trojacek.

Sister Mary Polasek gave a money donation to the Circle. Door prizes were furnished by Sisters Dorothy Prachyl and Alene Skrivanek. The lucky winners were Frances Sparks and Dorothy Prachyl.

Sister Rosie Zazvorka now resides at the I.O.O.F. Home in Ennis, Texas. We sure miss her and all the sisters who are unable to attend the meetings. We voted to give these sisters something nice this month.

Sister Sylvia Laznovsky had tickets for sale to help the Sokol young people.

They are planning to attend the Sokol Slet in Canada The lovely doll that was donated to the Circle by Mrs. Marie Fitz is on display in the Sokol Museum located in the Sokol Athletic Center. She is dressed in a beautiful native costume

(kroj). Ella Marusek made the costume.

She did a very good job. The museum is very interesting. If you have not been there, plan to visit it. For more information, call Vlasta Laznovsky at 875-3076.

The Circle donated three dolls to the Ennis Railroad Museum in Ennis, Texas.

The dolls are dressed in beautiful native costumes (kroj) and are on display in the museum. Ella Marusak dressed these dolls, also. The museum is very interesting. It will be worth your time to visit it.

Sincere sympathy is expressed to Sister Libbie Wisniewski. Her dog, Snoopy, who had been her dear companion for over 14 years was put to sleep by her veterinarian and was buried near Libbie's home. Pets are like a member of a family. They are loved while with us and missed when they die. I know, because over a period of many years, we have had many pets. Now, I have three dogs, Big Boy, Chelsea and Maxie. Had Suzie put to sleep a few months ago. My dogs obey me—sometimes better than children!

Congratulations to Petty Officer Third Class Harriet Ann Roberts of Arlington, Texas, who has been advanced to Petty Officer Second Class, United States Navy Reserve. Harriet is the daughter of Alice Roberts.

No. 2, Needville Welcomes Ella Tillie Novak On May 9, 1995, we were glad to welcome Mrs. Ella T. Novak of Lodge 88 to our facility. She was born in Ammansville, Texas, and came to us from a nursing facility in the Houston area.

She enjoys doing crafts and speaks fluent Czech and English which was taught to her by her grandchildren. She enjoys conversing with other Czech residents.

She was pleasantly surprised the day she was admitted when she was reintroduced to Mrs. Otillie Jurchak. They were next door neighbors 50 years ago.

Mrs. Novak is a very cheerful person who has three daughters. They are Sophie Nawara of Rosenberg, Marie Hodges of Houston; and Della Silhan of Houston.

We look forward to providing excellent care to Mrs. Novak for many years to come.

Once more, the beautiful and spacious Riverside Hall in East Bernard, Texas, will be the site of this year's annual KJT Czech Kolache-Klobase Festival on Saturday, June 10, 1995.

This event is held annually to bring people together in celebration of ethnic heritage and culture. Polka dancers will be delighted to know that they will be able to dance on one of the finest wooden dance floors in Texas.

The all-day celebration will feature a host of musical and entertainment groups, arts and crafts, craft demonstrators, Czech dancers and all kinds of food booths. Entertainment begins at 10 a.m. and continues non-stop until midnight. Dear Readers, Our youth club held its monthly meeting on Wednesday, May 5, 1995. Our meeting was well-attended and we had several visitors.

Mrs. Susan Skrabanek was our speaker. She brought us information about camp, youth achievement day, and the new rules which will soon take effect.

We talked about upcoming events and dates to remember.

Our charity project for next month will be collecting grocery bags and egg cartons.

Lodge 20, Granger Youth Club Reports on May Meeting Dear Readers, The May 6 meeting of Lodge 20, Granger Youth Club was called to order at 9:30 a.m. by President Brinna Bohac.

Cara Spanel-Weber led the Pledge of Allegiance.

There were 13 members present and one guest, who was Crystal Bartosh from Granger. There were also six adults. We have $108.31 in the treasury. We discussed having a booth in the Granger Lake Fest.

Our new business was a trip in Junemaybe to Summer Fun USA. The President adjourned the meeting at 10:15 a.m. After the meeting, everyone had soda and snacks. We also worked on Mother's Day presents.

Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club to Meet Monday, June 12 Dear Members and Friends, Cyclone Youth Club is planning a very fun summer for its members. We begin our summer activities with . the June Youth Night and our June meeting.

Saturday, June 10-June Youth Night The June Youth Night will be an evening of fun, music, friends, contests; and games. The activities begin at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 10 and continue until 11:30 p.m. at Flag Hall in Cyclone.

Admission is $3 for ages 6 to 18 years

and $1 for adults and ages 5 years and under. Food and soft drinks are available throughout the evening.

Everyone is invited to enjoy an evening of music, fun, and friends on Saturday, June 10. We will see you there!

Monday, June 12-Youth Meeting and Awards Presentations We will join our mother lodge in honoring our 50-year members at their June meeting on Monday, June 12 at 7 p.m. at Flag Hall.

During the mother lodge meeting, our 1995-96 youth club officers will be installed by District Two Director Willie Kohutek. Youth members will also be honored for their 1994-95 achievements.

At our youth meeting, please bring

your YAD entry cards. Youth Achievement Day (YAD) is Sunday, July 9 at Lodge 187, Round Rock. Also, if you plan on attending camp, please bring your completed, notarized camp forms to this meeting. We will finalize our summer fun activities at this meeting and plan for YAD and camp.

The Old Town Square The square—including the Town Hall with its Gothic tower, the astronomical clock (1410) and a number of other magnificent ancient buildings—has witnessed many a crucial events during the centuries of Bohemian statehood.

The Lany Chateau The Castle of Lany has been the summer residence of Czechoslovak presidents since 1921. This tradition was started by T.G. Masaryk (1850-1937).

Masaryk, along with his wife, Charlotte Garrigue and his son, Jan (1886-1948), is buried in the local cemetery.

Prague Castle From the end of the Ninth Century, when a fortified settlement stood on the site, the castle marks the site of the origins of the Bohemian state. First, Bohemian princes stayed there. Their place was taken by kings. Later still—in modern history—presidents would live there. For centuries, the beautiful Prague Castle has been one of the most dominant images on the landscape.

The Castle of Karlstejn Charles IV had the castle built from 1348-57 to put up a numerous set of saints' remains, and to secure the imperial coronation jewels. Part of the castle is the priceless St. Cross Chapel, with walls inlaid with semi-precious stones. It also includes a collection of 127 pictures of saints, made by Master Theodorik in 1357-65.
