A New Service for Members New Prescription Drug Service

Please direct your attention to the article which appears on page three under the Secretary-Treasurer's heading, "SPJST Announces Prescription Drug Program for All Certificate Holders." This is something totally new for the SPJST. It's another way of bringing value to your membership in the Society.

The discount prescription service is being provided through Scott & White Express Home Prescription Services, which is based in Temple, Texas. The program is affiliated with Scott & White Memorial Hospital and Clinic, which has often been cited as "one of the top ten medical facilities in the country."

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, whose department is responsible for administering the SPJST's hospital plan, was primarily responsible for establishing the new program with Scott & White and will oversee its implementation.

"It's a program that has worked well with other groups," Sister explains Anglin. "We hope it will benefit our members as well," she said.

The feeling is mutual.

To grow and prosper, we must continually look for new and better ways to serve our members. In today's world, innovation is an important part of customer service. When we dare to dream, we discover new ways to bring value to membership in the SPJST. Mother's Day is this coming Sunday, May 14. The credit for inspiring this national day of tribute goes to Miss Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania .

In the early 1900's, shortly after her mother's death, Miss Jarvis was asked to arrange a special memorial service in the Virginia church that her mother had attended. Realizing the universal beauty of the idea, Miss Jarvis brought her idea to the attention of the church community in Philadelphia where she lived.

On the second Sunday in May, 1908, the churches of that city observed their first Mother's Day services. These services were so widely acclaimed that Anna Jarvis quietly campaigned for a nationwide observance. Through her persuasion, Senator Burkett of Nebraska introduced into Congress a bill designating the second Sunday in May-the day on which Mrs. Jarvis was born-as a national Mother's Day. In May, 1914, the bill passed and President Woodrow Wilson signed the bill making it law.

Flag Day Essay Contest Parents and grandparents, if you have a young writer in the family, please direct him or her to the SPJST Flag Day Essay Contest advertisement that appears on page 14 of this week's newspaper.

The United States Flag celebrates its 218th birthday on June 14. For the more than 10 million members of 97 fraternal benefit societies of the National Fraternal Congress of America, it also marks the culmination of National Fraternal Week, June 8 -14.

Flag Day observances are a high point of National Fraternal Week. To promote the patriotic spirit of the SPJST, the Society is once again sponsoring a Flag Day Essay Contest. The contest is open to members ages 14 through 18. Essays will range from 150 to 300 words.

The winning essay will receive a prize of $100 and will be read at the Home Office Flag Ceremony on June 14, 1995.

The winning essay will also be published in the Vestnik. The winner from the previous year's contest must skip one year in order to compete again.

The essay must be postmarked no later than June 3 and received by the Home Office by June 6, 1994.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood Shows Community Support The idea of extending community service and support is nothing new to the members of Lodge 6, Cottonwood.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes to the last meeting which were approved. Correspondence followed. The members were informed that Jeff Appelt, a senior at Hallettsville High School, has been selected to receive a $500 SPJST Scholarship. He is the son of Jimmy and Marcie Appelt and the grandson of Erwin and Evelyn Holy.

Treasurer Helen Zabransky reported that the treasurer's books were audited and everything was in order. The report was then available to the members for viewing.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Lillie Balusek reported on the various SPJST tournaments and activities. She also told the members they should keep a record of the fraternal works done each month. A yearly report of all activities will be sent to Temple.

Sunshine Chairman Elsie Mascheck reported on the bingo held for the residents at Stevens Convalescent Center.

She thanked the youth club for the pretty decorated Easter clothespins that they made for the residents. The residents appreciated the decorated clothespins very much. Members assisting at the bingo were Evelyn Holy, Vicky Zak, Mary Matula, Jo Ann Matula, Margaret Smotek, and Elsie Mascheck. Sister Mascheck reminded the members that April, May, and June birthdays will be honored at the next meeting.

Youth Leader Annie Vahalik reported on the various youth club activities including attending the Youth Leader's Retreat in LaGrange, rest home favors, LIT retreat, etc. She also presented certificates to the members who participated in the 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive.

Elizabeth Wagner and Nicholas Vahalik each received a certificate for placing first in their division in the Christmas Ornament contest held at the fall district meeting.

State Field Representative Jim Wiest was present. He congratulated our lodge on our new members and for receiving the First Step award. He spoke to the members on the importance of life insurance and updating your policy if necessary. Our lodge sales representatives are Mary Matula, Erwin Holy and Annie Vahalik.

The meeting was adjourned. The youth had an Easter egg hunt and the adults enjoyed playing bingo. A funny skit was enjoyed by the members. The skit was entitled "Making Eggs" and was presented by Elizabeth Wagner and her friends, Audrey Huckaby, Gina Pavlicek, and Jessica Vaclavik. They had just returned from a Girl Scout Camp Out in Mathis.

Annie Vahalik gave the meal prayer and a delicious lunch was served.

Door prize winners were Irene Barcak and Christopher Vanek. Jim Wiest gave four SPJST items as additional door prizes. They were won by Jonathan Vahalik, Elsie Mascheck, Jimmy Luksovsky and Patsy Zabransky. Thank you, Jim, for the door prizes and for visiting our lodge.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, May 14, Mother's Day, at 2 p.m. at the Youth Center. Games will be played following the meeting. Door prizes will be given.

A special Mother's Day door prize will also be awarded. April, May, and June birthdays will be recognized. Lunch will be served as usual. Hope to see you there.

Retirement Gives Author Time to Pen Book

By Jody Bates Four decades later, Robert Skrabanek, a member of Lodge 9, Snook, was true to his word.

"It was a promise that took me 40 years to keep," explains Robert Skrabanek about his book We're Czechs, which features the Snook community in the 1920's and 30's.

"It was a simple life, full of good times as I was growing up," recalls Skrabanek with obvious pleasure. He used it as a background for his sociology doctoral dissertation at Louisiana State University in 1949, and his professors encouraged him to make it into a book. However, a number of life's de mandsa growing family, being head of the Sociology Department E" __as A&M, serving on local non prafit boards, being President of the College Station Kiwanis Club, writing more than 200 papers in his field—all kept the book just a promise.

"When I retired after 35 years at Texas A&M, my wife Kity reminded me that now ,I had the time. I rewrote it and submitted it to Texas A&M Press. They were interested, but wanted me to take out all of the scholarly footnotes, and make it into a reminiscence," explains Skrabanek.

Now the simply written book is accessible "even to fourth graders," he said, remembering Snook when it had no running water, no electricity and no hard-surface roads; when the days were spent in labor intensive farm work, but the evenings were spent with Czech benevolent societies, languages, and polka bands.

The hook was first printed as a hardback in 1988, then went into a second printing in paperback in 1989 and now is getting ready for its third printing this fall.

He met Kitty (Kathryn Kohlerl) when he was an undergraduate at Texas A&M. She had been born and raised in Bryan, part of a half-Czech, half-German family.

"She was so wonderful that my family decided to overlook the German half when we married," he said through a smile.

"The book keeps Kitty and I going to lots of Czech fests, dances and celebrations ...

That is the secret to enjoying retirement," says Skrabanek, flashing a quick smile. "Stay busy with rewarding things, and go as long as you can."

He also recommends that if you feel guilty about something you didn't do, retirement is the time to pursue it.

Lodge 18, Elgin to Host First Annual Tarok Tournament Now is the time to register for SPJST Lodge 18, Elgin's first ever Tarok Tournament to be held May 20, 1995, at the Elgin SPJST Hall on Highway 95 in Elgin. You do not have to be an SPJST member to play in this tournament.

Everyone is welcome to attend.

The entry fee is $20 which includes the noon meal and other snacks throughout the day. Four 1-1/2 hour rounds will be played. Each table winner will he paid $5 after each round. The top four scorers after four rounds will receive cash prizes ($100, $75. $50, and $25) and trophies.

Door prizes will also be given.

Registration is at 8:15 a.m. and play begins at 9 a.m. Please pre-register by May 15 for meal preparation. The entry fee will be refunded if a player is unable to attend. Schulenburg rules will be used for this tournament play.

We sang many of the songs that were popular many years ago and also the ones popular today.

Schedules Estate Planning Seminar A total of 31 members and guests attended the April meeting held on Sunday, April 9, 1995, at the lodge hall in Needville.

For the noon meal, baked and fried chicken was furnished by the lodge. A colorful variety of vegetables and salads brought by the lodge sisters filled the serving table. A great array of homebaked goodies was on the dessert table.

Thanks to all the sisters who brought food. Thanks also to President Macha for picking up the delicious chicken.

President Macha called the business meeting to order at 1 p.m. Jeanette Newman led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. All officers were present except Vincent Newman, our vice president. He was absent due to a job commitment.

Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes from the March meeting. The minutes were approved as read.

Correspondence was read by Mary Werner and included thank-you notes and a letter about our lodge placing an ad in the convention book. The SPJST Convention is to be held June 9-12, 1996, in Arlington, Texas, at the Arlington Convention Center. The lodge decided to place a quarter-page ad in the convention book.

Treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendall's financial report was also approved as read.

The Special Fund report was presented

by Gilbert Walzel. It covered the income and expenses for March and the upcoming month's schedule of events.

President Macha read a thank-you card from Helen Teykl. She is at home recuperating from hip surgery. President Macha also received notice from the Supreme Lodge that Lana Spacek, who recently transferred to Lodge 81, has won a $500 scholarship from the SPJST. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Spacek of Rosenberg, Texas.

Congratulations, Lana and the best of luck to you. Lana is a senior at B.F. Terry High School.

President Macha brought up the subject of the estate planning seminar again.

He informed the audience that he and his wife attended the seminar about estate planning. The seminar was very informative and interesting. It was decided by the lodge to have President Macha make arrangements for the seminar to be held after the May meeting.

President Macha is happy to let everyone know that all of the arrangements have been made. The seminar will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 21, 1995, at the lodge hall. We want to invite everyone to attend the seminar—this is not only for SPJST members—but for everyone. Tell all of your friends about it.

Here are some program highlights.

The seminar is a free of charge, non-sales, educational presentation to help people achieve quality estate planning. Each person attending will receive a complimentary workbook. A prize of a free living will or power of attorney will be given away. Everything is done on a professional basis. Remember it is free.

Most of the farmers have completed planting their crops. Earlier it has been wet causing a delay in planting. The nights have been too cold for the crops.

Seems like the seasons are a little mixed up.

In a few weeks, school will be out. It seems like the students just had spring break. Many are busy playing baseball.

The summer will go fast. In this area, school is scheduled to start August 14, 1995.

May 14 is Mother's Day. Everyone remember your mothers whether they are living or deceased. Remember to tell your mother that you love her. There is no greater friend than your mom. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of the mothers a happy and beautiful Mother's Day. Please circle May 21, 1995 on your calendar. A dinner consisting of chicken fried steak will be served at 12 noon followed by the business meeting at 1 p.m.

Then at 2 p.m, the estate planning seminar will be held. Ladies, please bring a vegetable or salad, and dessert. As for the dessert, Kitchen Chairman Mary Werner suggested we bring a little extra.

The reason is because we would like to serve refreshments after the seminar. We would appreciate it very much.

Lodge 88, Houston Reports on Member and Lodge Activities The wedding of Donna Schnell, daughter of Helen Schnell and the late Richard Schnell, and Guenter Merkle was very beautiful. The wedding was held at the gazebo with the weather cooperating. Donna, wearing a most beautiful dress, looked lovely. The ceremony was followed by a delicious dinner and dancing. A large group from the Houston International Folk Dancers attended. We enjoyed their dancing. Donna has been very active in our lodge and they will continue being active in our lodge. They will go on their honeymoon to Slovakia.

We wish you many years of happiness!

Many relatives and friends helped Eileen and Al Leedy celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary at the Chandelier Ballroom where all enjoyed cocktails, dinner and dancing. Eileen and Al are on the Entertainment Committee for the fifth year, and they are most loyal workers.

Bill Hughes had a cataract and implant surgery. He is doing fine. He and Adele have been active members for many years.

I just learned that Pearl Hanka also had

eye surgery. Our best wishes to you both.

Lodge member Annie Skyvara passed away at the age of 83. She had just recently lost:a daughter, Mildred Dunlap.

Our sympathy goes to her relatives, some of which are members of our lodge.

At our April meeting, Evelyn and Victor Janak had guests from the Czech Republic, Mirca and Bezrich Galusky.

They gave the lodge two large flags from their country. The couple was interesting and I got to speak my Texas Cesky with them!

We often have generous donors for refreshments after the meetings.

Recently, we had donors Estelle and Steve Kelly, Agnes and Ed Gerlick, and Jo Ann and Fred Buri. Speaking of Jo Ann—reminds me what a great secretary she is! It is so nice to have our lodge meetings reported in the Vestnik.

It is this Friday that we have the Czech Band Veselanka from the Czech Republic. I hope you have let others know about this as it is a treat we seldom get!

What a pleasant surprise to see in the Vestnik the picture of our professor Bill Souchek, his lovely wife Alice and their friends with a very interesting article.

The professor is very happy to say that he now has 43 enthusiastic students in his Lodge 88 class.

Members were saddened to hear of the death of Wylie Guettner at the age of 78.

Before he suffered a stroke in 1991, he was active in the lodge. Our sympathy goes to his wife, Emilie, his daughter, Doris Taylor, and the other relatives.

Chairman Viola Cox wants to remind you of the rest of the dances in May. They are John Sullivan on May 13, Al Pierson on May 19, Bobby Jones on May 20, and Sterling Silver on May 27. That gives you quite a choice of good orchestras.

Coming up on Sunday, June 4 is the Lodge Homecoming Splash Day. I will be writing more about it in my next letter.

Lodge 139, Danbury Reports on April Meeting After the April 10 meeting of Lodge 139, Danbury was called to order and the Pledge of Allegiance was said, the members remained standing for a period of silence in memory of Lodge 139 member Daryl Krenek, son of Charlie and Janyth Krenek of Danbury, and for the Publication Committee member and Nursing Home Director Melvin Skrabanek. Our entire membership extends our condolences to both families.

Regular business was conducted, correspondence was read and reports were given.

Secretary Lorenda Baldwin reported on the workshop she attended in Academy and the banquet in Holland.

She brought the First Step Award plaque the lodge received for meeting the requirements. Also, she brought the Quarterback Club and Running Back Club plaques and the District Five Top Salesman certificate for March she was awarded at the banquet. The lodge commends Sister Lorenda for her hard work and dedication.

The social following the meeting was enjoyed by all.

Language of Love Unites Couple in Spring Branch

By K. Pica Kahn They came from different backgrounds, and for 35 years their cultures have melted into one another to create an interesting mix.

Rose Sicner came to this country from France, the daughter of a Swiss mother and a Slovak father.

Her husband, Karel, came to this country from his native Czechoslovakia.

Now both Spring Branch residents teach their cultures and their mother tongues at the Spring Branch Community Center.

Both classes are for adults 18 years and older, and are free.

"I love teaching," said the wife, who has studied at the Sorbonne in Paris. "I get so much from my students. I teach them phrases and how to get around in France, more than just teaching them grammar."

Rose's classes require registration, and the next series starts in fall. Her husband encourages people to drop in at any time. For information about classes, call 932-9573.

Karel teaches his language to second-generation Czechs who either have heard the language growing up, or once knew a bit, but over the years have forgotten.

"They really love it," he said.

"When your parents come from a country like that, you want to know about it and are happy to learn that culture. It is a different world."

They teach in different styles, hers with a book concentrating on telling time, learning tourism phrases and describing the weather.

He uses the country's newspaper, and lectures a lot on the country's history and culture.

"They bring such a love of the culture to their students," said Lynn McCue, assistant director of the center.

"Rose also teaches French at the Bear Creek Community Center. They teach differently, but their students love them.

There are very few places in this city where you can learn to speak Czech."

They both enable Americans to

become bilingual and bicultural.

"I teach from the book, French 10 Minutes a Day. It was so rewarding when they start to speak the language," she said.

"I feel sorry for the young people who don't take time to learn about these people who are so interesting. The classes are strictly for fun, and this is just one of the many things that my students do. They are so interested in life."

She, too, is interested in many subjects, and acts as a docent with the Houston Museum of Natural Science.

She also is a volunteer with the Institute of International Education, working with Fulbright scholars.

She came from her native France when she was a child and lived first in New York City.

"I met Karel there and came to Houston on my wedding night, never having been to Texas before," she said. "So I guess, even though we raised our children with European influences and European values, I feel like I am a real Texan."

Karel, a house builder by trade and now retired, left his native country to find work a few years after World War II ended. He was in his early 20s at the time.

"I escaped communism and lived in Germany for a while, and then I went to South America," he said. "I came to this country in the early 1950s and have been here ever since.

"I did go back to my homeland to see my ailing father," he said. "My mother had already died.

"I still have lots of cousins and family that we go to see almost every year or so."

According to his wife, the couple have co-existed harmoniously, tied together by their European backgrounds, yet respecting their individual differences.

"It has made for a very interesting relationship," she said.

"Both teach their cultures and their mother tongues at the Spring Branch Community Center. "

182, Falls County Reports on April Meeting Lodge

SPJST Lodge 182, Falls County met in the SESCO meeting room in Marlin on April 23. The youth members met with their youth leaders at 3 p.m. and the parent lodge met at 4 p.m.

As a grandparent, I listened into the youth members' meeting. They followed the rules of calling the meeting together with the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag, the roll call of officers, reading of minutes, and procedure plans for activities they would like to do.

It would have been good for you Supreme Lodge Officers to have listened in. I think you would have been proud of these youth members. They continued until the 4 p.m. meeting of the parent lodge.

President Donald Beckendorf called the April meeting of Lodge 182, Falls County to order. The Pledge of Allegiance to the flag followed. The roll of officers was called and all were present. Last meeting's minutes were read and approved.

The officers presented their reports.

Old business was then discussed. The treasurer's report was presented and all bills were paid.

The active members of our lodge plan to host a get-together of prospective new members. We are also planning for the lodge and the youth group to go to the SPJST Museum, a swimming party, and a picnic afterwards in the near future.

Our next meeting will be at the Lott Fire Station on Sunday, May 28. The youth will meet at 3 p.m. and the parent lodge will meet at 4 p.m. We will have a pot luck meal. Hope all members and friends will be there.

With the adjournment of our April meeting, a meal was served. Dominoes were later played by men; women talked of the crafts they enjoy; and the youth made crafts and continued their meeting.

To youth member Catherine Jeschke of Lodge 49, Rowena: I am sorry I could not invite you and your family to the Jeschke Reunion in Hamilton County on April 29 as I did not know your address.

Sewing Circle Reports on April Meeting

The Ennis Sewing Circle met on April 13, 1995. We had a good attendance.

Our guests were Willie Skrivanek and Jerry Kohn.

President Sadie Kubin called the meeting to order. After the Pledge of Allegiance, a moment of silence was observed in memory of Libbie Palich.

She was a sister of Mary Polasek and Julia Harris.

Secretary Linda Trojacek read the minutes and Treasurer Mildred Trojacek gave the financial report. Both reports were approved as read. Sister Linda Trojacek thanked everyone for the sympathy cards that were sent to the family.

The quilt was quilted for the Polka Festival. The clock for the Sokol dining room was purchased. It is a nice clock.

Several items were brought for the Polka Festival. Several sisters volunteered to help in the arts and crafts booth.

Sisters Annie Vrana, Anne Zvolanek, and Mary Sebestik sent their regards.

Sister Mary Kubacak was slightly under the weather and could not attend the meeting. We extend our deepest sympathy to sisters Mary Polasek and Julia Harris.

Door prizes were brought by Sisters Libbie Elsik and Linda Trojacek. The lucky winners were Dorthy Prachyl and Alene Skrivanek.

Sisters Emilie Harrison and Alice Roberts each read a funny poem.

Everyone had a good laugh—something we need more often.

Easter decorations for the table were brought by Sisters Vlasta Laznovsky, Alene Skrivanek and Mildred Trojacek.

Mildred brought Hershey's kisses for everyone to enjoy.

Sister Anne Zvolanek had surgery on April 26 at Baylor Hospital in Dallas.

She is recuperating at home. We wish her a full recovery soon. Our next meeting will be on May 11. See you then.

Rest Home No. 1 Residents Enjoy St. Patrick's Day Party S.P.J.S.T.

The S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1 residents held a St. Patrick's Day party in March at 2:30 p.m. They played bingo before refreshments were served. Mrs. Pauline Kovar read the history of St. Patrick and how St. Patrick used the shamrock to describe that there were three persons and yet one God to the residents.

Refreshments of lime green sherbet punch and decorated cakes and cookies were served by Nita Seidenberger, Kimberly Kropp, and Ilyn Kaspar.

Kimberly pinned a shamrock on each resident before the party began.

Ruby Bryant, Rehabilitation Resident of the Month Ruby Bryant, a Hall Two resident, is assisted by Maria Estrada, Restorative Aide, on twice daily walks up and down the hall. Ruby came to reside at S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1 on October 5, 1994.

Ruby is a lifetime Texas resident. She was born September 20, 1917, and was a small business owner in Taylor for 25 years. She has one daughter, Janette; a granddaughter, Heidi; and one grandson, Shane.

Spring Festival The annual Spring Festival was held at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1 in Taylor during Easter week.

Mr. Woody Richards, administrator, welcomed the guests and thanked them for coming to the program. Mr. Pete Blomquist was then introduced to sing some Easter hymns. Mrs. Pauline Kovar, activity director, then emceed the program. As in year's past, children of staff joined in with the students from the Seventh Street Day Care Center in modeling their Easter finery. Their outfits delighted the residents.

An Easter egg hunt was held for the staff children and residents' great-grandchildren on Monday, April 10 at 4 p.m.

The children had a great time hunting eggs and enjoying their refreshments afterwards.

CHS Chapter Member Named Honorary Czech Consul

Czech Ambassador to the United States of America, Michael Zantovsky, announced that Raymond J. Snokhaus, a West native, has been named to the position of Honorary Consul for the Czech Republic to the United States, for the Southern half of Texas. McLennan County is among the counties included in the southern half of Texas.

Raymond J. Snokhous took the oath as the Czech Republic's first honorary consul to Texas in 50 years. The inauguration of the Honorary Consul of the Czech Republic, Southern half of Texas, Raymond J. Snokhous took place at the City Hall Annex Council Chambers in Houston, Texas, Speakers were His Excellency Michael Zantovsky, Ambassador of the Czech Republic to the United States of America, and the Honorable Bob Lanier, Mayor of the City of Houston. Reception followed at the Plaza Club in Houston.

Alphons Urbanovsky of West provided accordion music.

The Honorary Consul for the Czech Republic, Mr. Snokhous will promote commerce and trade between Texas and the Czech Republic.

Raymond is currently a member of the McLennan-Hill Chapter Czech Heritage Society of Texas.

He is the son of the late L.J. and Sidonia. Snokhous of West. Mr. Snolchous attended schools in West, and served in the Army's 101st Airborne Division from 1952-1954. He holds both BBA and MBA degrees from the University of Houston and Juris Doctor's degrees from South Texas College of Law. He was employed by Gulf Oil Corporation for 31 years before joining Houston Lighting and Power Company in 1983 as Group Vice President, External Affairs. He transferred to HLP's parent company, Houston Industries Incorporated, as Senior Vice President, Government and Regulatory Affairs in 1990.

For the last five years, he has participated in initiative of the U.S. State Department's Agency for Internal Development (USAID) to help the Czech Republic make transition to a market economy.

Mr. Snokhous presently serves on the boards of the Greater Houston Convention and Visitor's Bureau, American Legislative Exchange Council, University of Houston Center for Public Policy and the Texas Association of Taxpayers.

In 1993, he was appointed by the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment to serve on the Advisory Panel on Energy and Environmental Technology Transfer to Central and Eastern Europe.

He and his wife, Jolene, have a son Mark, a daughter Karen Nunneley, and five grandchildren. Mr. Snokhous is currently restoring his father's blacksmith shop in West.

Houston Industries Official Honorary Consul to Texas

A Czech-speaking vice president at Houston Industries was sworn in on April 17, 1995, as the Czech Republic's first honorary consul to Texas in more than 50 years.

Raymond J. Snokhous, 65, retiring as senior vice president of Houston Lighting and Power Co.'s parent company, was sworn in as consul for the southern half of Texas in ceremonies at the City Hall Annex at 900 Bagby.

His job will be to promote commerce between the Czech Republic and Texas. Trade between the republic and the United States is flourishing, having increased from almost nothing when the Iron Curtain began crumbling in the late 1980s to almost $600 million last year.

Snokhous has spent the past five years participating in U.S. State Department efforts to help the Czech Republic's transition from communism to capitalism. As Snokhous describes it he was at a reception in. Washington, D.C., tried out his Texas-accented Czech on the republic's minister of finance, and soon was involved in helping shape up the former Soviet satellite state's national utility company.

"Now that they're out of the shackles of communism," Snokhous said, "they're hell-bound for free enterprise and democracy."

Texas, he said, is overflowing with descendants of Czech immigrants. And as a result of immigration, the Czech Republic has a population that is familiar with the Lone Star State. When he visits there, Snokhous said, he often has to nod politely as Czech Republic citizens reel off nitty-gritty details about Texas and NASA that even die-hard Texans know only vaguely.

"They're really interested in Texas and our history," Snokhous said. "They feel comfortable when they come here."

As many as one million Texans have Czech surnames, and more Texans vacationing in Europe visit Prague than Paris. "The difference," Snokhous explained, "is that people stay longer in Paris."

Snokhous is the son of an old-style blacksmith from the city of West in McLennan County. He has two degrees from the University of Houston and a law degree from South Texas College of Law. He spent 31 years with Gulf Oil before joining HLP in 1983 as vice president. In 1990, he became senior vice president with Houston Industries.

He serves on the boards of the Great Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Great Houston Port Bureau, the American Legislative Exchange Council, the University of Houston Center for Public Policy and the Texas Association of Taxpayers. He also is on the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's governmental affairs council and the Houston Chamber of Commerce Division of the Greater Houston Partnership.

In 1993, he was named by the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment to serve on the Advisory Panel on Energy and Environmental Technology Transfer to Central and Easter Europe. ***

Remembering Dr. Charles J. Hollub Dr. Charles J. Hollub, the former consul of Czechoslovakia, resigned after the Communist take over of the old country in 1948.

Mr. Hollub was born on October 25, 1900, in the Czech settlement called Moravia, close to Schulenberg, Texas.

He was Houston's resident since 1929.

Dr. Charles J. Hollub was a medical doctor, a graduate of Prague's University in Czechoslovakia and a member of Harris County Medical Society.

He passed away at the age of 78 on February 22, 1978. Funeral services were four days later at Settegast-Kopf Funeral Home, with Czech-American Bishop John L. Morkovsky officiating.

Burial took place at Memorial Oaks Cemetery in Houston.

Dr. Charles J. Hollub left behind his wife, Marie A. Hollub (she has since passed away) and the host of other relatives.

I liked Dr. Hollub very much. He was a competent doctor and a patriot— proud of his Czech heritage. I was one of his patients and I brought my brother and his wife (visiting here from Czechoslovakia) for medical treatment and a visit to Dr. Hollub's offices.

I will always remember Dr. Hollub.

To his successor, Mr. Raymond J. Snokhous, new Honorable Consul of the Czech Republic to Texas, I wish all the best in another of his new careers!

Lodge 17, New Tabor Takes Top Honors in Fifth Annual SPJST Horsehoe Tournament Lodge 17, New Tabor was the site for the Fifth Annual Horseshoe Tournament.

There were 24 enthusiastic players representing three districts.

State Fraternal Activities Coordinators Klinkovsky welcomed everyone to the tournament and wished them an enjoyable day.

After seven games were played by everyone, a delicious noon meal was served by Lodge 17, New Tabor. After the meal, four more games were played by everyone and this revealed that there were ties for first and second place and for third and fourth place. And there was also a tie for fifth place. So we continued with the playoffs.

After the playoffs, the winners were: First Place Team Gary Zwernemann and Donnie Suehs Lodge 17, New Tabor Second Place Team Wilbert Nelson and David (Red) Oman Lodge 187, Round Rock Third Place Team Ronnie Honza and Bobby Honza Lodge 25, Ennis

Fourth Place Team Gladys Yates and George Pauling, Jr. Lodge 66, Waco Fifth Place Team Weldon Galler and Thomas Galler Lodge 66, Waco The lodge trophy for winning the most games was won by Lodge 66, Waco.

Lodge 66 had five teams competing in the tournament and they won a total of 26 games. Congratulations to all players for being so supportive of your lodge.

It was a cloudy and muggy day with a little rain right at finishing time, but we were happy that we could finish the tournament before the rain got heavy.

Our sincere thanks to all who took the time to play and support this tournament.

The fun and fraternalism was enjoyed by all players. A big thank you to Lodge 17, New Tabor and their members for an outstanding job in hosting the tournament and for their beautiful facilities.

A change was recommended for 1996 to give plaques instead of trophies and to award them to only the top four teams.

Mary Sustala Janak Johnson: The Lady from North Moravia ticipated in the formation of the SPJST in 1897. He went on to serve as the first Mary Sustala Janak Johnson was and third president of the Society.

Tragically, Mary's husband, Frank, honored on March 11th, on the occasion of her 94th birthday. Joining her in died as a result of an explosion which occured aboard a ship in New York. celebration were her family and many friends. Darilek Family Reunion After 1620, the region of Libchavy, Czech Republic, belonged to Prince Lichnetejn, and according to historical document, the first Darilek in Lanskroun was Prince Lichnetejn's estate agent. For his good service he was rewarded by the prince with a village named Darilek. His descendants moved from there to Dolrri Hermanice and they later came to Texas.

The first to arrive in the beginning of 1877 was Vincent and wife Anna (Beran) and their two sons, John and Vincent.

They settled at Mulberry, which was also called "Hot Tot", now called Praha, Texas. Next to arrive was Joe with wife Stazie (Zalman) and two children. Their sister, Emilie, with her husband, Joe Pavlicek and two children were next to arrive. Thomas and Frank, both single, came with sister Emilie. William, cousin of the above, with wife (Urban) and eight children arrived several years later. The families settled in Lavaca, Fayette and Colorado counties, and today there are more than 2,500 descendants.

Out of the four brothers, sister and cousin who originally came to this country, two lived to be more than 100 years old. Vincent died in 1945 at age 100 years, six and one-half months. William died in 1948 at the ripe, old age of 103 years and six months.

The last reunion was in 1992 and approximately 600 or more persons registered. This year the reunion date is August 12 at the K of C Hall in Moulton with registration at 10 a.m.

Family Reunion The annual Krizan reunion will be held at SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood Hall on Saturday, May 13, 1995.

Registration and visiting is from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Dinner will be served at 12 noon. Auction and business meeting is from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. A light supper will also be served at 5 p.m.

Each family is asked to bring a dessert. Anyone wishing to bring games are welcome to do so.

We are also asking every family to bring auction prizes to help defray the costs of the rental, food and other expenses.

In Memoriam Expression of Sympathy The membership of SPJST Lodge 185, New Braunfels, extends its heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed sister, GLADYS J. JASEK, who passed away on February 4, 1995, at the age of 59 years.

A funeral mass was held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Selma, Texas, on Tuesday, February 7, 1995. Interment was in Selma Cemetery No. 2.

Gladys was a charter member of Lodge 185, New Braunfels. She served as the first youth leader from 1978 until 1981. She also served as President in 1983-84 and Second Vice President in 1982, 1986, and 1991. She served on the nominating committee, kitchen and social committee; originated the cheer committee; and was Fraternal Activities Chairperson until her illness. She was also noted for her perfect attendance at lodge meetings from the organization of Lodge 185 until her illness last April.

She was also very active in SPJST District Seven activities.

Gladys was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Selma, where she was Eucharistic Minister, member of the St. Ann's Society and Christian Mother's Society.

In 1972, she received the Archbishop Fury Award for outstanding work in the Catholic Church.

Gladys Jasek was a member of KJZT No. 4, Praha, and the A&M Mother's Club.

Survivors include her husband, Ernest Jasek; her mother, Bessie Riedel; daughter and son-in-law, Noreen and George Baker of Austin; sons, Douglas Jasek of Midland and John Jasek of Houston; sister, Dorthlin Wilson of New Braunfels; and brother, Melvin Riedel of New Braunfels.

May our departed sister rest in peace and her memory live on among her friends and family forever.

Services for Mr. Pomykal were at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, February 20 at Sheffield Funeral Home in Temple with the Rev. Eugene Kotrla officiating.

Burial was in Ocker Brethren Cemetery.

He was born in Falls County to George and Anna Schiller Pomykal. He was a farmer and lived in Falls and Bell counties all his life. On December 11, 1928, he married Lillie Schiller. He was a member of Ocker Brethren Church and SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone.

The members and officers of SPJST Lodge 28, East Bernard wish to express our sympathy to the family of ADOLPH JOCHEC. Funeral services for Adolph Jochec, age 74, of East Bernard were held on Friday, April 14, 1995, at 10 a.m. at the Davis Funeral Home in East Bernard with interment following at the Czech National Cemetery in East Bernard.

Rocky Whitely officiated at the services.

Mr. Jochec was born on December 21, 1920, in East Bernard and passed away on April 12, 1995, in East Bernard. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 28, East Bernard for 54 years. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Mary Jochec, and a sister, Annie Jurek.

He is survived by his sister, Gusty Janik and her husband, Ed, of East Bernard; a brother Rudolph Jochec and his wife, Sophie, of East Bernard; a brother-in-law, Joe Jurek of Wallis; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Davis Funeral Home in East Bernard.

Funeral services were held on March 25, 1995, from the Nelsonville Brethren Church with Rev. Michael Groseclose officiating. Interment was in the National Cemetery at Nelsonville.

She was born on October 4, 1909, in Kenney, Texas, to Fritz and Albina Lubojasky Klostermann.

On December 28, 1939, she was united in marriage to Otto Joe Maresh. She was a member of the Nelsonville Brethren Church and SPJST Lodge 201.

She is survived by her sons, Otis Maresh of Bellville and Otto and Hope Maresh of Houston, and one brother of Bellville.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, and one brother.

Funeral services were under the direction of the Knesek Brothers/Etlinger Funeral Chapel of Bellville.

Elsie Karolina Moravec, age 75, of Route One, West, passed away on April 19, 1995, at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center in Waco.

A prayer service was at 7:30 p.m. on April 22 at the First United Church in West.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. on April 22 at the First United Church in West with the Rev. Jack McKinney officiating. Burial followed at Bold Springs Cemetery near West.

The family received visitors from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on April 21 at the funeral home.

The daughter of John and Ann (Foit) Hegar, Mrs. Moravec was born on July 28, 1919, in the Brooken Community of Hill County. She attended the Brooken school as a child. She married Henry Moravec, Sr., on May 2, 1943, in West.

She was a homemaker and a farmer with her husband in Ross, Texas. She was a former member of the Home Demonstration Club and SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood. She was also a member of the First United Church in West.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Emil Hegar, who died March 22, 1995.

She is survived by her husband, Henry Moravec, Sr. of West; five sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel and Carol Moravec of Axtell, Ernest and Lorna Moravec of Brooken, Henry, Jr, and Janice Moravec of Abbott, Alvin and Cathey Moravec and Willie and Michelle Moravec, all of West; two brothers, Willie Hegar of Temple and Edmond Hegar of Troy; two sisters, Mary Margulieux of Garden Grove, California;and Wilhemina Truitt of Elm Mott; ten grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were John Moravec, Ernest Moravec, Jr., Edwin Moravec, Jason Moravec, Kent Kroll, and Gary

Hegar. Honorary pallbearers were David Hegar, Loren Lec Johns, George Wayne Moravec, and Steven Margulieux.

Memorials may be made to the First United Church Memorial Fund.

Expression of Sympathy The members and officers of SPJST Lodge 28, East Bernard wish to express our sympathy to the family of JOE FRANK TALAS, SR. Joe Frank Talas, Sr., 70, of East Bernard, died Wednesday, March 29 in Gulf Coast Medical Center, following a sudden illness.

He was born in Hungerford on April 19, 1924, the son of Joe M. and Annie Rosie Vasek Talas.

Talas had been a lifelong resident of Wharton County, residing in Hungerford before moving to East Bernard as a young boy.

On September 17, 1945, he married Lucy Frances Orsak in East Bernard.

He had been a farmer and rancher all of his life. He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard, the Knights of Columbus Council No. 2500 in East Bernard, the American Legion Post No. 226 in East Bernard, and SPJST Lodge 28, East Bernard.

Talas was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He had various business interests including President of the West End Grain, Inc. and Vice President of Hungerford Grower's Gin. He was co-owner of L&R Limousin Cattle Co. He was also a former board member of the East Bernard ISD and a former director of East Bernard Co-Op. He cherished his family and enjoyed his many friends and outdoor activities.

Rosary was recited at 8 p.m. Friday, March 31 at Holy Cross Catholic Church.

Funeral Mass was offered at 10 a.m.

Saturday, April 1 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard. Father Gerry Cernoch officiated.

Burial followed in the Holy Cross Cemetery in East Bernard.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Lucy Talas of East Bernard; daughters and sons-in-laws, Joyce and Gary Eckelbert and Patsy and Charles Verm, all of Sealy, and Yvonne and Steve Naiser of East Bernard; sons and daughters-inlaw, Joe F. Talas Jr., James Edward and Patsy Talas, Allen and Elaine Talas and Kenneth Talas, all of East Bernard.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Edward Talas, and a daughter-in-law, Betty Ann Talas.

Pallbearers were Chad and Ryan Eckelberg, Joey Talas III, Jason Talas, Jimmy Talas and John Talas.

Honorary pallbearers were Stephen Naiser, Gary Eckelberg, Charles Verm, Jimmy Vasek, Richard Vasek, Frankie Wasek, Edward Wasek, August Wasek, Raymond Wasek, Albert Sabrsula, Anthony Lister, Edward Louis Talas, Jr., Thomas Verma, and Louis Stollar.

In lieu of usual remembrances, the family requests memorials to: Holy Cross Church, East Bernard, Texas 77435.

Expression of Sympathy On behalf of the entire membership of Lodge Cecho-Moravan, No. 106, LaGrange, we wish to express our deepest and most sincere sympathy to the family of our departed sister, IRENE PRATKA MORRIS, age 77, who passed away Thursday, April 20 at Fayette Memorial Hospital following a severe heart attack at her home.

Funeral services were held Saturday, April 22 at St. Paul Lutheran Church with Rev. Bill Hassell officiating. Burial was in the LaGrange City Cemetery.

Mrs. Pratka retired at the end of 1994 as Fayette County Clerk after 49 years of service in the Fayette County Courthouse, of which 44 were in the County Clerk's office and of that, 17 years were as county clerk.

Mrs. Pratka was born October 1, 1917, in Temple, the daughter of Hy and Olga (Schott) Helbe. She was united in marriage with Frank J. Pratka on September 7, 1945. Mr. Pratka preceded her in death in 1975.

On December 12, 1983, she was married to William (Dana) Morris.

Mrs. Pratka was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, the Texas County and District Clerks' Association, the American Legion Auxiliary, and SPJST Lodge 106.

Survivors are her husband, Dana Morris of LaGrange; one daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Glenn Kubena of Clear Lake; two sons and daughters-inlaw, Frank H. and Michelle Pratka of Baltimore, Maryland, and J.D. and Lori Pratka of LaGrange, Texas; three stepchildren and their spouses; one brother, LeRoy Helble of Victoria; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services for Brother Turek were at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 21, 1995, at Condra Memorial Chapel in Taylor with the Rev. James Hejl and Rev. Dan Marek officiating. Interment was in the Taylor City Cemetery.

Edwin A. Turek was born November 16, 1918, in Abbott, Texas, the son of the late Andrew and Albina (Hejl) Turek. He was united in marriage with Sadie Shiller on October 12 1946, at the Taylor Brethren Church. They made their home in Thrall, Texas, where Brother Turek was engaged in farming until his retirement.

Brother Turek was preceded in death on July 27, 1980, by his wife of over 33 years, Sadie (Shiller) Turek, one brother, Ernest Turek, and one son, Harry Turek.

Survivors are a son, Jerry Turek, and his wife, Karen, of Pflugerville; two sisters, Christine Batla and husband Richard of Taylor and Elfie Stauffer and her husband Harry of Thrall; and two grandchildren, Jimmy and Kristy Turek of Pflugerville.

Brother Turek was a member of the Taylor Brethren Church where he was very active especially in assisting with the Kolache Bake in the "wee hours" of the morning. He was also a member of the American Legion Post No. 39, Mutual Aid Society No. 3, the Thrall Volunteer Fire Department, and SPJST Lodge 48.

Edwin and his wife contributed much time and energy to Lodge 48. Edwin enjoyed playing dominoes after the meetings.

She was born in Bryan, Texas, on March 29, 1914. She was the daughter of Fritz and Julia Severa. Mrs. Brandt was the manager for the School Cafeteria at Prescott Elementary School and retired in 1978, after 22 years. She was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ.

Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Fred J. Brandt of Corpus Christi; daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Roger Esterling of Orange Grove, Texas; two granddaughters, Robin (David) Larkin of Corpus Christi and Karen Esterling of Austin, Texas; a great-granddaughter, Kirstin Michelle Larkin; and two sisters, Emily Janosek of Corpus Christi and Albina Yeager of College Station, Texas.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 24, 1995, at St. Paul United Church of Christ with Rev. David Pantermuehl officiating. Interment followed at Seaside Memorial Park Cemetery.

The family has requested that memorial contributions can be made to St. Paul United Church of Christ Building Fund, 5525 Lipes Boulevard, Corpus Christi, Texas 78413.

24, Cyclone Youth Club to Meet This Sunday, May 14 Lodge

Dear Members and Friends, Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club will meet this Sunday, May 14 (Mother's Day) at 2 p.m. at Flag Hall. Lodge 24's Mother's Day Barbecue is also on May 14. Cyclone youth members will be serving the sweets to our guests at this event, which begins at 11 a.m. and continues until 2 p.m.

This meeting is the last meeting of the 1994-95 year. We will elect youth officers for the new year 1995-96, which begins in June. The Lodge 4, Hallettsville and Lodge 97, Placedo SPJST Youth Clubs were invited to perform at the 1994 Victoria County Czech Heritage Festival. The Placedo young people performed dance routines and the Hallettsville group performed Czech songs.

The SPJST Leaders-In-Training (LIT) Workshop will be held June 2 - 4 at Camp Butman at Route Three, Box 113 in Merkel, Texas. The camp begins at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, June 2 and continues through Sunday, June 4 at 11:30 a.m.

The workshop is especially for SPJST youth club members ages 14 - 17 years who have demonstrated exceptional leadership skills and have a desire to assist the District Youth Counselors with district camp activities. Youth members attending will learn the skills necessary to become an effective LIT. Chartered buses will depart the SPJST

Those attending are encouraged to bring the following items: sack lunch for Friday, snacks, personal articles, sheets (twin), light blanket, pillow, wash cloth, towels, flashlight, tennis shoes (no opentoed shoes), blue jeans, comfortable clothes, travel games, favorite cassette or CD (marked with your name), quarters for vending machines, an open mind, a good attitude, and a willingness to participate in all activities.
