Congratulations to these outstanding producers.

Production during March was 140 applications for more than $3.8 million insurance. For the three-month period, production is up over 1994 by 33 percent on number of applications; up 108 percent on insurance written and up 39 percent on earned premium. We do appreci-

ate this outstanding performance of our sales representatives.

SPJST Observes Fraternal Week 4 Fraternal Week is April 23 - 29 The week of April 23 - 29 has been designated "Fraternal Week" by the National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA) to celebrate the many accomplishments of fraternal benefit societies and their members. The week was chosen to coincide with "National Volunteer Week" because so much of what fraternals do is tied into the volunteer spirit of their members.

During 1993, members of fraternals belonging to NFCA-including the SPJST-conducted 43,075 fraternal events and contributed nearly 67 million hours of volunteer service.

During that same time, fraternals provided approximately $17 million to students and educational institutions, making them one of the world's largest private systems of scholarships and educational support. Even so, many people are not aware of the extensive community services provided by fraternals.

National Fraternal Week provides us with a time to recognize and commend the tireless volunteer spirit of our members and the members of our nation's many fraternal benefit societies.

Their dedication to people and communities reinforces the ideals of our forefa-

What a Difference A Date Makes Last week, in this column, it was reported that the Publication Committee would be meeting at the Home Office in Temple on Saturday, April 9, 1995. That was a typographical error. That should have read Saturday, April 29, 1995.

This meeting is an annual process whereby committee members representing each district get together with the editor to address issues relating to the publication of the Vestnik.

Typically, we review the previous year of publication and develop recommendations for the upcoming year.

Readers with concerns or suggestions regarding the content and/or direction of their publication are also encouraged to register their thoughts and ideas.

Anyone who wants to address the Publication Committee at this meeting is asked to make arrangements with their District Publication member in advance of the meeting date. Publication Committee members are listed in the far left column of page two. Thank you for your attention and your input.

Lodge 160, San Angelo to Host District Four Spring Meeting Lodge 160, San Angelo will host the District Four Spring Meeting on Sunday, April 23, 1995, at Wall Fire Hall in Wall, Texas.

Registration will begin at 11 a.m. A noon meal will be served at 12 p.m. followed by the meeting at 1 p.m.

The noon meal will be furnished by Lodge 160, and members of Lodge 160

are asked to bring a dessert.

All members of District Four are encouraged to attend.

Five President Presents Summary of Spring Meeting

Dear Members and Guests: This is to let you know about our District Five Spring Meeting. We had a very good attendance. We were so happy to see so many of our sisters and brothers come out and attend our meeting.

At this time, we, the officers of District Five, want to say special thanks to Lodge 172 for their hard work and hospitality to all in District Five. The music was enjoyed by all. All the good food that they prepared for us was great.

There were 62 door prizes given and 42 cakes, pies, and cookies. That was great!

The extra pastries were auctioned and the money was given to four youth clubs from Lodge 88, Houston, Lodge 142, Houston, Lodge 172, Pasadena, and Lodge 196, Houston-West.

We honored our 50-year members with a special cake, nuts, mints, and punch which was enjoyed by all. The fraternalists were also honored. To our departed sisters and brothers, we honor them with a memorial service.

Dear Members, Lodge 17, New Tabor held its regular monthly meeting on April 2 at 7 p.m. with all officers present, except Vice President Mica Petty and Assistant Youth Leader Holly Suehs.

We had no new members and did not have any resolutions.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Sefcik reported that Lodge 17 won the trophy at the State 42 tournament for the lodge with the most wins. Donny Paul and Glen Paul won fourth place. FAC Sefcik also reported that the state horseshoes tournament will be held at Lodge 17 on April 22. The meal will be catered, but we do need ladies of the lodge to please bring sweets for desserts.

We will have our reception for our 50year members at our May meeting.

Our local Tarok tournament has been set for July 8.

18, Elgin Reports on March Meeting

The monthly meeting of Lodge 18, Elgin was called to order at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 21 by President Dollie Hajda who welcomed the 23 members in attendance.

President Hajda then led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a prayer for our departed and ill members.

Secretary Agnes Eschberger read the minutes of the previous meeting which were approved as read. Treasurer Alice Kovar gave her usual, thorough job reporting on the financial status of the lodge. There was no correspondence.

Youth Leader Dale Kessel reported that the annual May Fete will be held this year on Saturday, May 13 with more information forthcoming at the next meeting. Assistant Youth Leader Ruby Bowen stated that the District Two youth will be making a trip to Six Flags in the near future.

Alice Kovar gave the ticket and bar reports in the absence of the chairpersons of those committees. Home Dues Secretary George Lairdon reported that membership stood at 611 as per his last report from the Supreme Lodge. House Chairperson Irene Helgren thanked everyone for their help at the March Polka Fest. She also gave a report on the Bar Tip Fund and stated the workers will hold their fish fry on March 31.

Thanks were given to the 16 members who attended the spring meeting in Round Rock.

Plans have been in the works for an anticipated note burning celebration scheduled in October.

Minnie Reis and Dollie Hajda have volunteered to construct a valence for the stage in our hall which we know will only enhance the beauty of this facility.

A cake honoring the three 50-year members, who will be honored at the fish fry, will be purchased. Other desserts are needed in expectation of a good turnout.

The door prize was won by Minnie Reis, which proves that no good deed goes unrewarded since she volunteers her time to our stage improvements. She graciously donated her winnings to the general fund, and we thank her for the gesture.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:45 p.m. The next lodge meeting will be Tuesday, April 18.

Karel Jonas, No. 28, East Bernard Reports on April Meeting Lodge

Dear Members, The Sunday, April 2 meeting of Lodge Karel Jonas, No. 28, East Bernard convened on time at 1:30 p.m. The gavel sounded with seven 50-year pin recipients, five guests, seven regulars, and one juvenile present.

Of the seven 50-year pin recipients, there were three that should have received their pins last year and/or the year before. The recipients present were Sister Mary Jane Kocurek, Sister Lanell Kalkomey, Sister Martha E. Macha, Sister Henrietta Rosenbaum, Brother Bennie A. Janik, Brother Dennis Keperta, and Brother George Keperta.

Supreme Lodge President Brother Howard Leshikar had graciously accepted to come down from Temple to make these 50-year pin presentations. Thank you, Brother Leshikar, for doing the honors!

This writer was very glad that these seven members took the time to come in to receive their pins. He hopes they will come back to attend meetings on a regular basis.

A special thanks goes to our lodge vice president/fraternal activities coordinator Brother A. J. "Tony" Kelner and Lodge Secretary/Treasurer Sister Helen Kelner for the extra effort made to get these recipients to attend.

The meeting was a success with two motions being made and passed to take care of lodge business. Although all' reports were made brief because of the pin ceremony, all were accepted as given.

Four lodge Sisters coordinated efforts to make the luncheon a success. Thank you Sisters Hilda Baluhuta, Agnes Kovar, Agnes Pilcik, and Helen Kelner. There were others who took the time to bring something for the luncheon and this writer wishes to thank them, also because their efforts helped to put the frosting on the cake, so to speak. Along with the above mentioned persons, there was Sister Kocurek of Lodge 81, Needville (a guest) who helped on the serving line. The officers wish to thank her for her help.

As always, young Sister Jessica Kelner was a great help which is appreciated.

It was sad to learn of the passing of Brother Melvin H. Skrabanek, Secretary of the Publication Committee. The officers and members of Lodge Karel Jonas wish to extend their condolences to his family for their loss. He was a good person and his expertise will be missed by all.

40, El Campo-Hillje Reports on Quarterly Meeting Lodge

Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje held its quarterly meeting and social at Country Pride Restaurant in El Campo, Texas, on March 15, 1995, at 7 p.m.

A delicious meal was served to 44 members and guests attending.

President Rita Vanek presided and led the pledge to the flag followed by a moment of silent prayer for our ill and deceased members.

47, Seaton Honors 50-Year Members

Our monthly meeting was held April 2 at which time we honored our members for 50 years of holding insurance with our SPJST Society. We also paid tribute to one of our members attaining the age of 96. We had ten members present to receive their 50-year pins.

We want to thank our members for making this a wonderful day. Thanks to Judy Pechal for making the beautiful cake and Janelle Novosad for making all the corsages. Thanks also to Supreme Lodge Vice President Leonard Mikeska for joining in this tribute to our members of 50 years.

47, Seaton Reports on April Meeting and Social Lodge

Dear Brothers and Sisters, The regular lodge meeting was held on Sunday, April 2 at p.m. with President Calvin Skrabanek calling it to order.

Flag Bearers Janet Baca and Rebecca Greger brought in the flags and led the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing for a moment of silence to honor the memory of Brother Anton F Vitek.

He passed away on Monday, March 27, six years to the date that my husband, Jerry, passed away. Brother Vitek was a very active member for 50 plus years. He was a regular at lodge meetings, health permitting. He was a helper at work days and picnics, with Christmas preparations, etc. He shall be missed by everyone who knew him. Deepest sympathy to his beloved wife and other relatives and friends. May he rest in eternal peace after this early sojourn.

Visitors were welcomed and these included Andy Machicek, Freddie Schroeder, Robert Horton, Brother Supreme Lodge Vice President Leonard Mikeska and Sister Dorothy Mikeska of Lodge 24 and others who came to see their loved ones receive their 50-year pins. We enjoyed having you present and please feel welcomed every time you visit. Come again soon.

Brothers Edward Mihatsch and Jerome Orsag, both had surgery recently. Hope you are improving daily and better health will be forthcoming.

Roll call of officers, sales representatives and trustees was read by Secretary Dolores Skrabanek.

Correspondence included a thank you for the floral tribute sent to the funeral service of Brother William Matous, Jr.; an acknowledgment from the Temple Brethren Church of the contribrution in memory of Brother Anton Motl; a notice of a seminar for bartenders sponsored by the TABC on April 17; and the announcement of three lodge members receiving SPJST scholarships. The three scholarship recipients are Sisters Laura Gibson, Trina Reese, and Christina Trampota.

Congratulations!

Also, the East Bell County Youth Fair Boosters will have their meeting soon and representatives from the lodge will be included.

New members were transfers from Lodge 88 to our lodge. They are Michael Roggie, Andrea Roggie, and Patricia Roggie. Welcome and come to our activities that are in the SPJST calendar and especially, to our meetings.

Board minutes were read by Sister Judy Pechal in the absence of Brother Edwin Vasicek, Board Secretary.

Reports of officers followed.

President Skrabanek commented on the trash pickup to which only six people showed up. Vice President Edwin Pechal reminded everyone of the clean-up of the inside and outside of the hall and some painting to be done on Saturday, April 15 when no dance is scheduled.

Second Vice President Ruth Hanusch reported that four teams participated in the state "42" domino tournament in Buckholts. The teams were Brothers Joe Kohut and Leon Jezek, Brother Louis and Sister Ruth Kohutek, Brother Joe and Sister Adella Coufal, and Brothers Joe and James Hanusch. The family night on March 17 had 16 participants in the progressive "42" dominoes. Another family night is planned for April 21. Come eat hamburgers and french fries at 6:30 p.m. and the games begin at 7 p.m. An enjoyable evening is promised. Sister Hanusch also reminded, everyone to keep up with the fraternal acts each member does during 1995.

The picnic plaques are available so you will be seeing these in the places you frequent, at local lodges and businesses.

The picnic will be here before we know it. Reserve the date of Sunday, June 4 for our lodge picnic at Seaton Star Hall beginning at 11:30 a.m. for barbecue plates served to be eaten there or taken home. Mark your calendars now The picture of the quilt is in this issue.

All of the chairpersons gave good reports.

Youth Leader Ginger Greger reported 29 members and 11 visitors in the youth club meeting. The May Fete representatives from Lodge 47 will be Jennifer Pechal and Erin Skrabanek. They will be going to the other lodges because our local lodge has their May Fete every other year. The youth club will be going to the Lodge 29 May Fete on Sunday, May 7. Therefore, they will hold their meeting on Friday, May 12 at 6 p.m.

They will be electing the officers at that time. The fund raiser this year is a spaghetti supper on Friday, May 19 at 6:30 p.m. That is the family night for the lodge but be prepared to eat spaghetti instead of hamburgers. They will hold an auction after the supper so if you wish, you may donate items for the auction.

The 50-year pins were awarded to the ten members present for the occasion.

Those members who took the time to receive their pins were Nancy Jane Chlapek, Martha Dubcak, Vlasta R. Horton, Frank W. Janacek, Lorene E. Kotrla, Irma Klinkovsky, Edward D. Matous, Clarence D. Pechal, Bernice Pfeiffer; and Frank J. Vasek.

Brother Leonard Mikeska spoke to the group and to the 90 other members present for this meeting. He questioned if we had known that Presidents Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Harry Truman had served in 1945, the year these members bought their insurance policies. That is a long time ago when President Roosevelt started the Social Security system.

Brother Mikeska spoke on fraternalism, the caring and making a difference in people's lives. The insurance products still provide protection for continued living together as families after the loved one's have passed on to be with God. Loneliness remains afterwards for a long time. I know because of my loss six years ago.

The pins were presented as were corsages and boutineers and a large cake was decorated for the honorees. The Age 96 member, Sister Bennie (Sefcik) Orsag, was not able to be present, but congratulations to her as well as to the recipients of the 50-year pins. Both of these are great accomplishments. Don't you wish you had been here for this event?

This Cake Says It All Here's the cake baked and decorated by Judy Pechal honoring Lodge 47, Seaton's "Age 96" member and 22 fifty-year pin recipients. It was almost too pretty to cut!

The quilters were Martha Dubcak, Martha Palla, Georgia Sodek, Albina Mikeska, Vallie Tupy, Evelyn Jakubik, and Lorene Palla. They did a magnificent job of quilting. I hope someone will be very proud to be the lucky winner at our lodge picnic on June 4. Tickets are available from lodge members.

Our next mother lodge meeting is Sunday, May 7 at 2 p.m. The youth club will meet Friday, May 12 at 6 p.m.

Lodge 47, Seaton Recognizes 50-Year Pin Recipients at April Meeting

Congratulations to our Sales Representatives! Brother Jerry Kucera, Field Representative for Districts Three and Four, reported that Lodge 66 gained 25 new members for 1995 which qualified the lodge for the Gold Star Award.

He thanked the sales representatives for their outstanding job, and reminded them to keep up the good work and we could have 100 new members for the year 1995.

Brother Kucera then presented pins to be worn by the sales representatives when contacting prospective members.

Those present to receive their pins were Brother Johnnie Gaidusek, Sr., Brother Frank Kofnovec, Sister Gladys Yates, and Brother Keith Gatewood. Pins will be presented at a later date to those sales representatives who were unable to attend. Brother Kucera also congratulated all sales representatives in District Three for their work of over $1 million in insurance sales during February.

Brother Keith Gatewood, President, expressed his appreciation to Johnnie and Polly Gaidusek, Lucille and Bob Cervenka and George Pauling for representing Lodge 66 during the chartering ceremonies for Lodge 182 in Marlin, during which time Brother Gaidusek pre-

sented our donation check to them.

Congratulations to Lodge 182 and best wishes for success in all your activities.

Brother George Pauling, Nursing Home Director for District Three, reported Brother Melvin Skrabanek passed away on April 8, 1995. Brother Skrabanek of Caldwell was a member of Lodge 17, New Tabor. He was a District One Nursing Home Director and served on the Publication Committee. We extend our deepest sympathy to his family.

Sister Bonnie Pruitt reported get-well cards were sent to Raymond Dulock, Batt Vernetti, Johnnie Gaidusek, Sr., Rose Parma, and Charlie Mueller. We wish all a speedy recovery. Also, a sympathy card was sent to Edward Sweeney on the death of his wife. We send our condolences and will remember the family in our prayers.

Sister Sharon Tierce, Youth Leader, reported on activities which included plans for attending a movie; a visit to the Moody Nursing Home and help with their Easter parade; they continue their collection of old eye glasses; issue certificates for participating in the t-shirt contest; planned for the District Three meeting, the Youth Activity Day and for the upcoming camping event. Permission was granted for the purchase of a season pass to Six Flags for all active youth club members. The birthday cake was furnished by Jamie Trickett and Douglas Galler brought the special game of the day. And, all were excited about the Easter egg hunt which followed the meetings.

Sister Lucille Cervenka, Entertainment Committee Chairman. expressed appreciation for the dish towels donated by the youth club. She alsc thanked Jewel Warhol for her help in cleaning and rearranging the kitchen area. The kitchen stove has been renovated and now looks almost new. The report is that it seems to work very well.

There were further discussions of plans for the Lodge 66 Fun Day and the date for this event was set for August 13, 1995. The purpose of this special day is to encourage participation of new members and make them feel welcome and to welcome back our old members. Sisters Gladys Yates, Mary Alice Langlotz, and Dana McAdams volunteered to serve on a committee to finalize plans. To all Lodge 66 members, mark your calendar now for August 13 and make plans to attend. And watch for more information to follow.

The Rules and Regulations Committee continues to review the bylaws and asks that any members who

Mary Alice Langlotz, Fraternal Activities Coordinator, reported six teams were going to participate in the horseshoe pitching tournament. There were five teams that participated in the "42" tournament at Buckholts. Our sixth team, Johnnie and Polly Gaidusek, were unable to attend due to Johnnie's major surgery. He is making a speedy recovery and is selling insurance again and attending meetings. Everyone reported having a great time at the tournament with 80 teams participating. The hospitality was great and everyone enjoyed the fellowship. There were no "42" trophies brought back to Lodge 66, but as Mary Alice said, "Just wait 'til next year!"

There were 13 adults and five youth members at our game night on the 10th.

The games were lots of fun and the food and fellowship was great.

FAC Mary Alice Langlotz stated she had recently mailed the FAC report on charitable deeds performed by our volunteers. She shared a very interesting article from the "FAC News for April 1995," which stated "a volunteer is someone who responds to needs without concerns for monetary profit,"—one who goes beyond basic obligations to help others.

She and her husband, Thomas, are celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary on April 14 by going with their family to Lake Charles. They have been very active in our lodge for many years and still are active. Clara is in the Birthday Club and Tommy, as we like to call him, is in the Men's Club. It is a pleasure to wish this splendid couple more years of happiness!

Mary and John Kosut, who are very active in our lodge, are on a tour to Washington, D.C. Having a son and his family there, plus the many interesting sights, I know they are having a great time!

Our heartfelt sympathy goes to Lowrina and Karl Lindeman on the death of their brother-in-law, Egon E. Tietjen.

Karl will miss the hunting and fishing trips that he enjoyed so much with Egon. Our sympathy also goes to Irene Klare on the death of her husband, Louis Klare. Louis was active in the Men's Club.

I hope you are thinking and talking about the Veselanka Band which will play at the lodge on Friday, May 12. They are from the Czech Republic, and we haven't had a band from there for many years.

Dances for the rest of April are Texas Dutchmen on April 22 and Bobby Lane on April 29. The dances for May are Texas Brew on May 5; Knights of Dixie on May 6; John Sullivan on May 13; Al Pierson on May 19; Bobby Jones on May 20; and Sterling Silver on May 27. All are great orchestras. So come and enjoy dancing to their good music.

Another event coming up in May is the fish fry that the trustees are having on Friday, May 19 from 5 to 8 p.m. Get your tickets in advance and save a dollar!

Get-well wishes go to Evelyn Mikolas who is the loyal ticket seller for the Birthday Club. We miss you, Evelyn!

Best wishes also go to Ray Hagan, Jimmy Wahlberg, and Ann Lacina. Ann had bypass surgery. She helps with the pastry and usually brings two or three pastries at a time.

Lovely Donna Schnell and Guenter Merkle are getting married on April 8. I will write more about the wedding in my next letter.

92, Fort Worth Reports on April Meeting

Lodge There is another group of loyal workers in our lodge, and that is the Men's Club.

It was started 12 years ago by Edward Miculka, who led the club to its growth of 53 members. They save the lodge money by taking care of anything needed to be done in the building and on the grounds. The club has a meeting once a month that starts with a good breakfast.

Dear Members and Friends, This is the first year that April 1 came and no one tried to pull a prank. I don't think people do that as much as they did years ago.

But just the same, here we are starting a

new month. Yard work is being done as the rains lately have caused many weeds to grow in the lawns and flower beds. It is good also to be able to get outside to enjoy the fresh air. Many bluebonnets are in full bloom along the highways and in the fields everywhere. Around Ennis, Texas, there are so many and they are very pretty.

Texas is proud to have the bluebonnet as our state flower.

We want to congratulate our members on being married for 50 years. Brother Charles and Ottie Mott have enjoyed their marriage and I am sure they have enjoyed being together for these many years.

Brother Charles and Ottie have been members of Lodge 92 for 50 years. They were married March 20, 1945, right after the war. They have two daughters and one son and several grandchildren. Lodge 92 is glad to have such nice members who are able to be together for so long. Many times, death separates marriages. No one, of course, can control that but God. In the next few months, there are some members who will be celebrating their 25th and 40th wedding anniversaries and also some members who will be married 55 years. Then in October, there will be a 60-year marriage celebration. I will write about these anniversaries as they are celebrated.

Carl and Christine Zich are looking forward to seeing their daughter, Carol Everett, as she has been in Florida since last September. She is due here April 6 and will stay for three weeks. Her legs are not quite healed yet but hopefully will be real soon. Our other daughter, Shirley Ann, is having problems and seems to stay in bed much of the time. We do not know what has caused this unless perhaps her gall bladder surgery has left her with some type of phobia.

Our meeting on April 9 began, as all lodge meetings do, with the Pledge of Allegiance. Then, the secretary read the resolutions and the minutes of the last meeting. The officers then gave their reports.

Then, if new business is brought up, it is discussed. The old business usually takes more time as different ideas from members are expressed. I hope that under the old business, the building of the caretaker's house can be settled. When things are not settled within a reasonable time, members tend to lose interest. We do want more members to attend the meetings to take a part in these decisions and enjoy the fellowship. This is why we need to keeps things in a fraternal way.

The SPJST seems to be growing as all sales representatives over the state are doing a fine job. Brother Brian Vanicek is doing a fine job with the Vestnik. But let's not forget all the past editors. They, too, were wonderful.

A few weeks ago, an old landmark that is located near where the old Lodge 92 used to be, near the stockyards, and was designated to be a historical site, burned down. Many Czechs who worked at the packing house often stopped there to get beer and play a game of moon. It was then "Bunker's Place." At one time, Evelyn Spacek owned it but she sold it to a company that was going to house homeless people. Lots of you "old timers" remember Bunker's Place.

Lodge 92 does always appreciate when anyone expresses the good times they have at our dances. Thank you, Martha Frnka. You and your friends are always welcome.

St. Thomas Catholic Church will sponsor a dance on April 29. Music will be furnished by a disc jockey. The time for the dance is 8 p.m. to 12 midnight.

97, Placedo to Sponsor Polka Fest on May 21

The Seventh Annual Polka Fest will be held May 21, 1995, at the Inez Community Center in Inez, Texas.

Sponsored by SPJST Lodge 97, Placedo, the festival will feature the Leo Majek's Orchestra of Corpus Christi, the Vrazel Polka Band of Buckholts, Texas, and the Vanek Brothers of Victoria.

Music will be played from 1 to 8 p.m.

Admission will be $6.00 per person for adults and $2.00 for those ages 12 years and under. Hamburgers, cokes, kolaches, and refreshments will be available throughout the day.

The Inez Community Center will seat approximately 800 people and has a good oak dance floor. The hall is located on Highway 59 at Inez, midway between Victoria and Edna, Texas.

Lodge 133, San Antonio Reports on March Meeting Lodge 133, San Antonio held its regular monthly meeting on Sunday, March 19 at St. Margaret Mary's Activity Center located at 1314 Fair Avenue.

A roast beef lunch was enjoyed by members in honor of the lodge's 77th anniversary. We would like to thank our members for bringing the delicious covered dishes and desserts. Lodge 133, San Antonio Presents Scenes from March Meeting State Field Representative Jim Wiest congratulates Jarolyn Popp who was honored as a member of both the "Running Back Club" and the "Quarterback Club" for 1994. The sales awards were presented to her at the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Banquet held March 11 at Lodge 80, Holland.

Lodge 133 will not have a meeting in April due to Easter. Our next meeting will be on Sunday, May 21 at St. Margaret Mary's Activity Center. It may be necessary in the future for Lodge 133 to change its meeting location. Any changes will be published in the Vestnik.

Frankie Campbell was presented with a 50-year pin and was honored for her longtime membership with Lodge 133.

Our congratulations also to Enez Bienek who also received a 50-year pin.

Jim Wiest, SPJST State Field Representative, recognized Jarolyn Popp as a member of the "Running Back" and "Quarterback" clubs for her sales efforts during 1994. Jim Wiest also spoke to the members regarding the extreme inflation that has hit funeral home rates. He urged all members to review their insurance coverage and consider the cost of inflation.

The district meeting will be Sunday, April 30 at Lodge 79 in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Lodge 172, Rozkvet, Pasadena Reports on Lodge Activities Dear Members, There were two important events at Lodge 172, Pasadena just recently.

25th Anniversary On February 26, we celebrated our 25th anniversary and Founders' Day Social. A special dinner and dance was held for all of our members and a presentation of plaques to the people who were instrumental in the organization of Lodge 172.

These members of the SPJST are Lillie Mae and Victor Peter, Evelyn Mikeska, and Alvin Sefcik. Brother Sefcik was a founder of Lodge 173, Galveston which merged with Lodge 172 in 1985. We were fortunate to have Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar to present these awards with our District Five Director Louis Hanus. Thank you both for coming to our special day.

10/VESTNIK—Wednesday, April 19, 1995 District Five Meeting The other important event was the District Five Meeting held at our lodge on March 5. The district officers gave a very interesting and progressive meeting.

It was wonderful that so many of the members from the district could attend.

Thanks again to Brothers Leonard Mikeska and Brian Vanicek for making the trip from Temple.

March Meeting Our March lodge meeting held on March 22 was attended by 40 members and our three guests, District Five Director Louis Hanus and District Five Sales Manager Helen Hegwood with her husband, King.

The meeting began at 7:30 p.m. after a covered dish dinner, which was held at 6:30 p.m. The business meeting was conducted as always with the Pledge of Allegiance and roll call with one trustee, J.V. Thomas, absent.

Communications were read as received and minutes of our last meeting were read and accepted. Old and new business was discussed and disposed.

Our next members' meeting will be Wednesday, April 26 at 7:30 p.m. and the next work party day is Monday, May 1 at 8:30 a.m.

I would like to thank the members of our lodge who show up for the work party day as many repairs and improvements are made. Also, thanks to the ladies who also come out to assist in making our lodge a better place. The last work day four of our sisters attended.

We are still drawing good crowds to our Saturday night dances, and the entertainment committee under Sister Helen Wallace is doing a fantastic job.

It was nice to see Brother Goldie Grube and Ruth back to attending our dance as Goldie has spent considerable time in the hospital. Several of our members are out of touch because of the flu bug. We hope they are doing better now.

Several of our members attended the workshop and Incentive Awards, namely Tennie Walla, Lillie Mae and Victor Peter, Henri and Joe Krenek, Clarence and Bobbie Pertl, Vicki Dressler, and Louise Willis. They came back with the Gold Star award of which we are proud to receive. Let's make it three years in a row!

Victoria County Czech Heritage Society Prepares for 1995 Czech Festival Adolph Motal, gave a brief talk on the Czech language and offered to teach those who wish to learn at the January meeting.

Joe Janak, Festival Chairman, stated that committee members have been holding festival meetings in preparation for the 1995 Czech festival.

The festival has been changed to July 16. It will be held at the Victoria Community Center. It begins with a Czech-English Polka Mass and Brethren Services. There will be the Texas State Torak Tournament, arts and crafts, a raffle drawing, a baking contest, a Czech stew and sausage noon meal, dance to the music of The Dutchmasters, The Little Fisherman Orchestra, and the Leo Majek's Orchestra.

Adolph Motal, Julius and Marjorie Matula attended the State Spring Meeting in Hillje, Texas, on March 4 with Jaroslov Belik, a Kinetic Artist, as guest speaker.

Bernice Kurtz was presented the President's Award by VCCHS President, for her past service to VCCHS in 199394.

Theo Kocian and Adolph Motal accepted a certificate from the Texas Educational Foundation for the VCCHS contribution to the Czech Chair in Czech Studies.

Adolph Motal, Theo Kocian, Lydia Schoener, J. Pustka, and Majorie Matula dressed in their Czech costumes and impressed attendants as greeters at the performance by the Czechoslovakia Girls Choir hosted by The Victoria Symphony last February.

George Koudelka, musician, was guest at the March meeting. The members enjoyed his program on the history of Czech music and his experience as musician.

Tom Kurtz and his committee had no problems in getting the Cesky Hlas out to CHS members.

Family Reunion The Pesl-Charba Reunion will be Sunday, April 30, 1995, at the VFW Hall in Smithville, Texas (Highway 95 near the Colorado River Bridge).

The mass times are at 8 a.m. at the St. Paul Catholic Church in Smithville and at 10:30 a.m. at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church in Cistern.

The meal will follow the welcome and the introductions. The meal will be served at 12 noon. Please bring enough food (meat, vegetables, and dessert) for your family. Bring spoon/spatula for your dish with your name on it. Bread, tea, coffee and paper goods will be provided. Invite all of your family members and anyone who is related to the Pesl/Charba families.

Youth Letters Section District Two Youth Club Elects Officers Dear District Two Readers, We had our District Two Spring Youth Meeting on March 19, 1995, at Lodge 187, Round Rock.

We elected new officers, and they were installed. The new officers are: President Melanie Koslovsky (Lodge 47, Seaton) First Vice President Alyson Holman (Lodge 187, Round Rock) Second Vice President Jessica Lyon (Lodge 177, Academy) Secretary/Treasurer Kristen Muegge (Lodge 29, Taylor) Reporter Tammy Baker (Lodge 24, Cyclone) Sergeant-at-Arms James Teague (Lodge 20, Granger) Congratulations to these officers. We are happy for them.

Our District Two trip will be Saturday, August 12. We will be going to Six Flags. We hope all of you will go.

After our meeting, we joined the adults in their meeting. Then, after their meeting, everyone was welcome to a meal that was great!

Seven Youth Counselor Reports on Upcoming Summer Activities District

Dear Youth Members, Before we know it, summer activities will be here. I want to encourage each of you to plan to attend the District Seven Spring Meeting in Corpus Christi on April 30, 1995. The youth members attending will be going bowling after the noon meal.

Also, if you have not already done so, please start working on your Youth Achievement Day projects and talent acts. Our 1995 District YAD will be held Sunday, July 9 at the lodge hall in Floresville. A schedule of events will be in a later edition of the Vestnik.

The LIT Workshop is scheduled for the weekend of June 2-4, 1995. We are traveling to Temple by personal vehicle, then going on from there by bus to Camp Butman, which is close to Abilene. I know that our State Youth Director has a great weekend of fun and learning planned. If you are interested in being an LIT this year, please check with your youth leader to see if you are eligible. You will need to complete an application for the LIT workshop, as well as a camper's application. Both must be returned to

your youth leader in order for me to have them no later than May 15, 1995.

Youth camp will be held at Camp Val Verde July 25-28. Our theme will be "Christmas in July". We are still in the planning stages, but it is shaping up to be a great camping session.

I am excited about the things we have planned for this summer and look forward to seeing all of you who have been members, as well as meeting the new members.

24, Cyclone Youth Club Reports on Open House Lodge

Dear Readers, President Danny Baker opened the April 9 meeting of Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club by introducing everyone to our Open House and Membership Drive.

Youth Leader Melanie Zavodny welcomed everyone and highlighted events of Lodge 24's fun and busy year. She had everyone introduce themselves. There were 20 Cyclone youth members present, 21 guests, and 24 guests in attendance.

Mr. Gene McBride, the State Field Manager for SPJST, was one of our guests and he spoke on how to become an SPJST member. Also in attendance was Patsy Koslovsky, District Two Youth Counselor. She spoke to the group about the fun events SPJST has to offer. She presented a brief video on the SPJST youth program.

A special guest speaker was Lisa Sebek, the City of Temple Recycling Coordinator. She presented a very informative and educational talk on recycling and ways to keep our earth clean.

We would like to thank Mr. McBride, Mrs. Koslovsky, and Mrs. Sebek for sharing their interesting presentations with us.

Afterwards, the youth and young guests in attendance were treated to an Easter egg hunt and party. Lots of prizes were given away. We had fun playing the dart throw and bean bag toss. A delicious variety of snacks were provided by the Lodge 24 members and parents of our youth.

Door prizes were won by Ryan Greger, Justin Bennett, Candice Garrett, and Lauren Ernst. Thanks to Patsy Koslovsky for donating the door prizes.

24, Cyclone Youth Club to Host MayFete '95 Lodge

MayFete '95 is Saturday, May 6 at Flag Hall in Cyclone. Hosted by Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club, MayFete '95 will be a celebration geared to bring together and introduce young people from surrounding communities and SPJST lodges.

We cordially invite couples representing youth clubs, school and other organizations to participate in MayFete '95, which will begin at 4 p.m. Suggested dress for the event is formal, semi-formal or Sunday attire.

An afternoon and evening of entertainment is planned. A barbecue dinner catered by Cyclone Corral will be available for $5 per plate. A dance will follow the dinner.

Complete information packets with a schedule of the activities for the day will be mailed to each participating couple.

Lodge 88, Youth Club Member Reports on District Five Easter Party and Egg Hunt Dear District Five Readers, What fun we had at the annual District Five Easter party on Saturday, April 1 at Lodge 88, Houston.

We had approximately 100 people attend this year. Granny Bunny (Marie Stayton), Easter Bunny (Michael Williams) and Bunny Helpers (Kate Lee and Amanda Hermis) passed out a lot of candy to everyone.

We had an Easter egg hunt for all ages, 0 to 99. There were plenty of colored eggs for everyone. We each also received a special egg, where we got a special surprise.

On Friday, March 31, we colored about 75 dozen eggs. I have enclosed some pictures of the egg coloring and the Easter party.

The LIT's did a good job hiding the eggs and decorating. The food was also good. We had hot dogs, chips, dip, cookies and punch. Everyone got a balloon when the party ended.

Dear Lodge 66 Youth Club, I hope that everyone had fun at our Easter egg hunt at our lodge meeting on April 9. It was like bees looking for honey!

We also went to Moody Nursing Home on April 14 for their Moody Hat Parade. We made them hats and also took an Easter bunny to visit everyone.

A meeting for those interested in learning Czech dances was on Sunday, March 26 at 2 p.m. at Lodge 88.

Mrs. Linney, youth leader, thanked the youth for her birthday card and flowers.

She enjoyed them very much.

District Youth Counselor Marie Stayton asked the LIT's to wear their LIT shirts to the Easter party. She said the district officers are planning a trip to Huntsville, Texas. More details will be forthcoming. It is also possible that the youth of District Five may go to Schlitterbaun in the near future. The New Braunfels lodge said the youth may be able to camp out at their hall. Mrs. Stayton said this year's State YAD special category will again be items from the SPJST museum. This year's food category will be desserts.

At the District Five Spring meeting, a cake auction was held. Each youth club received $76.00. There were four youth clubs present. Again, the cake auction was a great success.

Our meeting adjourned at 7:40 p.m.

Our next meeting will be Wednesday, April 19 at 6:30 p.m. Krystle Bender will provide the refreshments. Hope you can join us.

88, Houston Reports on March Meeting

Dear Readers, The District Five Spring meeting was held Sunday, March 5 at the SPJST Lodge 172 in Pasadena. The youth of the district recited the Pledge of Allegiance and sang the National Anthem with Mr. Fred Buff We also were asked to bring desserts and served at the dessert table. Some of the pretty and homemade cakes were saved for a cake auction which was held later in the afternoon. There were four youth clubs which participated in the cake auction. Each youth club earned $76.00 from the auction. We would like to thank everyone who supported our auction.

The district youth then went to the Lodge 172 youth room and held our annual district election of officers. Our president is Jason Hermis, and John Buri is vice president. We discussed upcoming events for the district.

The annual Easter party at Lodge 88 is Saturday, April 1 at 2 p.m. The Strawberry Festival in Pasadena is Saturday, April 8. The officers scheduled a lunch meeting at Pizza Hut for Saturday, March 11 to discuss what the officers' responsibilities are.

We had a great time visiting with all our friends from throughout the district.

Dear Members and Readers, Our youth club meeting was called to order by President Justin Miller on Wednesday, March 15 at 6:50 p.m. We recited the Pledge of Allegiance and the youth club pledge.

Old business included the Shriner's Hospital visit on Saturday, April 15. We are to arrive at the lodge at 1 p.m. We are to be at the hospital at 1:30 p.m. They require that the refreshments be storebought. We will play a game with the children and the Easter Bunny will be also be coming.

Our District Five Easter Party was Saturday, April 1 at 2 p.m. The LIT's were to decorate and set up at 9 a.m. We dyed the Easter eggs on Friday evening at 7 p.m.

New business included a donation of $25.00 to the Lodge 88 scholarship fund in honor of Mrs. Tina's sister who recently passed away. A sympathy card was signed and will be sent to her.

The Strawberry Festival was Saturday, April 8 in Pasadena. We met at 9 a.m. and the walkers received a lunch paid for by the district.

Youth members of Lodge 185, New Braunfels had an ice skating party on Sunday, April 2, 1995. We went to the Crystal Ice Palace in San Antonio.

The Czech alphabet possesses the ability of rendering the quantity of vowels by the use of the 'darka, and the palatal sound of the three consonants, d', t', g.

To further increase the number of sounds and letters, the Wel( or caret is used for some hushing sounds. s—§, c—C, As indicated previously, the following are hard consonants: d, t, n, h, ch, k and , r. Capitals are not used for emphasis' or for news headlines in Czech. On the whole the use of capital letters is rather restricted in Czech.

Here are other important points in spelling: Pronouns and possessive adjectives of the POLITE-FORMAL usage are capitalized, as are those of the FAMILIAR-INFORMAL usage: Vy, Vim, Val: Ty, Tvilj, Tobe. The latter are ALWAYS in caps; the polite form is capitalized only when referring to a group (plural), then the pronouns are not capitalized.

A common error made by many Czechs in this area is that when they use the formal Vy, Vas, Yam, they use a PLURAL verb, although they are addressing only one person. WRONG: Vy, (I person) jste vUra jeli do mesta.

RIGHT. Vy jste jel do mesta. DO NOT USE A PLURAL VERB UNLESS YOU ARE SPEAKING TO MORE THAN ONE PERSON. The pronoun já is not capitalized; neither do we capitalize adjectives and adverbs indicating nationality. (This is done in English). Ex., Mdm eesku lenu. (I have a Czech wife). Mluvime tesky. (We speak Czech).
