The SPJST applauds the initiative of our January Top Producers and their ability to set and meet goals. We now encourage them and other sales representatives to set their sights high in the months to come.

Top state honors in January go to Charles Garrett, the top producer in applications and insurance written; and Emil Petr, the top producer of earned premium.

Congratulations to Charles and Emil on an outstanding job of helping us grow.

We began a new format for recognition of our top producers in the state and in the district. The recognition and awards will cover three categories: (1) Number of Applications; (2) Insurance Written, and (3) Earned Premium. Ties in number of applications and insurance written will be broken on the basis of highest earned premium.

We also began a "consistency club" which will recognize sales representatives who produce at least two applications for two or more consecutive months. Beginning in February, we will recognize those sales representatives who produced at least two applications in January and February. The number of consecutive production months will be cumulative; however, if a month is missed, the sales representatives cumulative total will be lost and they must start over in the consistency club.

During January, we wrote 109 applications for more than $4.2 million of insurance and $38,095.93 of earned premium. We have a good beginning, good products and are looking forward to an outstanding year. We are here for you.

Caring for Those Who Cared for Us

Filling A Need ...

Brother Dan Balusek, Chairman of the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home Committee, dropped by the Home Office last week to relay a message to SPJST members. On page four of this week's Vestnik, he expresses his appreciation to the members and friends who helped support the recent piano fund-raising effort on behalf of S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 2 in Needville.

During his visit, we talked a little about S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes in Taylor and Needville and how they operate.

"Our first priority is to make our residents feel comfortable," Brother Balusek says. "We want everybody to feel at home."

The idea to build the rest homes took root, he says, at the SPJST's 1956 convention in Temple.

"Members saw a need to build a home to accommodate some of their aging members and some of the other older members of the community.

"They authorized the creation and organization of a self-governing and independent corporation and granted $100,000 for this purpose," he explains.

To this day, the management of the S.P.J.S.T. rest homes rests in the hands of seven directors-one from each district.

In accordance to the rest homes' by-laws, new guests are admitted on a first-come, first-served basis. As is stated in the bylaws, "Every application made by members of the Order for admittance to the Home shall be taken into consideration, but it shall in no case be made the basis of any preference on account of membership in SPJST." "If there are any SPJST members out there who are interested in becoming a part of one of our two retirement communities, I encourage them to visit our facilities in Taylor and Needville," Brother Balusek advises. "Or you can write or call me for an application.

"That will get you on the waiting list and put you in a better position to check in someday. Really-it's never too early to get on the list."

Czech Girls' Choir Coming to Temple Readers in and around the Temple area, please take note. On Tuesday, February 21, 1995, the Cultural Activities Center in Temple hosts the Jitro Czechoslovak Girls' Choir, under the direction of acclaimed choir master Jiri Skopal. The performance, sponsored in part by the SPJST, will be at 7 p.m.

Since it was founded in 1973 in the East Bohemian city of Hradec Kralove, the choir has been a favorite of both critics and concert goers throughout Europe. In the words of one Chicago Herald reviewer, "The Jitro Chorus is the best children's chorus I have ever heard ..."

UC'me se Cesky - Let Us Study Czech By popular demand, the Fraternal Department is making available to Vestnik readers a complete set of 32 introductory Czech lessons. This is the same "Ile-me se Cesky - Let Us Study Czech" lesson series which regularly appears in the Vestnik.

The Vestnik recently received a notice from Marie Matcek, who is President of the Wharton County Czech Heritage Society, that the Spring State Meeting of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas will be Saturday, March 4, 1995. The meeting will be held at St. Andrew's Parish Hall in Hillje and starts at 9:30 a.m. The program includes a performance by the East Bernard Czech Singers, a barbecue luncheon, and an informative presentation by visiting Czech physicians. The business meeting starts at 1 p.m. Anyone interested in attending is encouraged to see Sister Matcek's letter which appears on page 13 of this week's Vestnik. *** There Are Two... . . . things people worry about these days-one is that things may never get back to normal, and the other, that they already have."

Lodge 66, Waco to Host Tenth Annual SPJST State Tarok Tournament Lodge 66, Waco will host the Tenth Annual SPJST State Tarok Tournament on Saturday, February 18. For the past several years, the attendance has been between 68 and 96 players. It would be nice to have a large turnout for our tenth anniversary.

Play begins at 9:30 a.m. Six one-hour rounds will be played. Two rounds will be played before the noon meal. Four rounds will be played in the afternoon.

Then, the top eight winners will be announced.

Prizes for 1995 are: Lodge Trophy — The lodge trophy will be awarded to the lodge which has the most accumulated points for this entire tournament. A lodge trophy will also be awarded for the first place state winner.

About our Featured Speaker Tommy Engelke is associate vice president of the Texas Agricultural Cooperative Council, a statewide trade association of agriculture, electric, telephone and water supply cooperatives. He is a Dale Carnegie course instructor and a recognized facilitator of long range business planning exercises.

The SPJST Supreme Lodge has authorized reimbursement for one car per lodge to attend the workshop. Lodges receiving awards at the Awards Dinner following the workshop will be authorized reimbursement for one additional car.

From the President's Office Brother Jerry Elzner Named 1994 SPJST Fraternalist of the Year At their January meeting, the SPJST Supreme Lodge selected Brother Jerry Elzner of Lodge 79, Corpus Christi, as the Society's 1994 Fraternalist of the Year.

Brother Elzner, who has been a member of the SPJST for more than 30 years, has established a distinguished record of fraternal achievement within his lodge. His fraternal commitment to his lodge and to those in need has touched and enlightened the lives of so many.

Although Brother Elzner is not an officer at his local lodge, he is a leader.

His compassion for others has resulted in food drives for the hungry and clothing drives for the homeless. He was also part of the SPJST delegation who participated in the Habitat for Humanity intra-fraternal project in San Antonio. Working with fraternalists from around the state, Brother Elzner helped to construct a home for a deserving family. He is also a strong supporter of his local lodge. In addition to securing speakers on a variety of topics, Brother Elzner has also delivered presentations on Czech heritage and his trips to the Czech Republic.

It doesn't stop there. Brother Elzner regularly takes the time to write public officials, including the President, congressmen, state and SPJST officials to secure birthday cards for lodge members who have turned 80.

Brother Elzner regularly attends the meetings of Lodge 79 and donates his time and services as needed. He raised his children in the lodge and is now helping direct his grandchildren in that same direction.

Brother Elzner is also a gracious host to those visiting from the Czech Republic. One recent group included a number of Czech farmers who wanted to observe American farming methods. To make these and other visitors feel welcome, Brother Elzner has organized dinners at the lodge hall. In the process, he always makes time to explain to them about the SPJST and how it is working to maintain the traditions of the "Old Country."

Brother Elzner is a strong believer in his heritage. He enjoys helping school children and their teachers learn about Czech culture through talks and hands-on presentations of Czech memorabilia.

Those who know Brother Elzner say that he "never meets a stranger" and that he "never misses an opportunity to lend a helping hand." He is a true fraternalist and we are fortunate to claim him as a member of the SPJST. He is also a member of Sokol, VFW, KJT, AARP, American Legion, Tax Payers Association and the Spohn Hospice.

The presentation of Brother Elzner's Fraternalist of the Year Award will be made at the Lodge Officers' Workshop on March 11, 1995 at Lodge 177, Academy.

Congratulations to Brother Elzner, the four fraternalists who were selected as honorable mention recipients, and to all who were cited by their local lodges for their outstanding achievements.

SPJST Czech Language Allocations Available An allocation of $3,000 is set up annually for the study of the Czech language at the local lodge level.

The allocations will begin January 1 of each year and will continue until December 31, or until the allocation is depleted. The allocations are on a first come basis until the allocation is depleted for the year.

These are the guidelines for the Local Lodge Czech Language Allocation as set by the Supreme Lodge Board.

1. First come, first serve basis to the lodges.

2. Classes must be minimum of 5 persons.

3. Instructor must be proficient in the Czech language.

4. Allocation for each class is $200. Maximum 2 classes per year.

5. Local lodge will handle aspects of the program within Supreme Lodge guidelines.

6. Minimum of 15 hours per class.

7. No credits will be given for the course.

8. Local lodge will report on how

the money is spent and return any unused portion of the allocation.

This program is designed to promote the Czech language to small groups and in areas where communities do not have close access to language studies. Participants in the class should come away with a better understanding of the language.

The lodge should also consider asking participants for a small fee to help offset the cost. A fee of $10 per student is recommended.

The first meeting of 1995 for Lodge 18, Elgin was held on Tuesday, January 17 at 7:30 p.m. at the lodge facilities in Elgin. Thirty-two members were present.

President Dolly Hajda led those in attendance in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Secretary Agnes Eschberger presented the minutes of the previous meeting, which were approved as read.

Treasurer Alice Kovar conveyed a two-fold report. She first gave an annual accounting, then she gave her monthly report. Thanks, Alice, for your outstanding work!

Vice President/Fraternal Activities Coordinator Leslie Gustafson reported on the Lodge Incentive Program and our accomplishments in 1994. He also turned in $70 in can sales to the treasurer.

Youth Leader Dale Kessel stated that a function has been planned for January 27 if there are not too many conflicts with parents and children. Ruby Bowen was recognized as the Assistant Youth Leader for 1995.

Financial reports were given by Gladys Mogonye (Ticket), Leslie Gustafson (Bar), Esther Lairdon (Home Dues and Membership 614), and Irene Helgren (Activity Fund).

House Chairperson Irene Helgren thanked those who helped with the decorating and undecorating of the hall for the holidays. Many compliments were received on the beautiful job done this and every year in Elgin. Thanks, Irene, for all your hours of dedication and hard work!

Under old business items, a motion was made to make Lodge 18 a smokefree facility, and the measure passed.

Repair of the lighted sign at the driveway entrance will be undertaken as soon as possible.

New business included the possibility of hosting a barbecue cook-off in Elgin for SPJST lodges only, a proposal to seek local property tax relief if possible, and the scheduling of a fish fry for our workers in March or April.

Mr. Keith Gatewood, a member of Lodge 66 and State Field Representative for Districts One and Two was in attendance. He gave an informative overview of products that the SPJST has available for your financial needs. We thank you, Keith, for sharing your time with us.

As the final order of business, President Hajda and Vice President Gustafson appointed Roy Simmank, Jack Eschberger, and Alvin Eschberger as auditors.

Also, I must say it felt a bit strange not leading a Lodge 18 meeting after eight years as president of one of the finest lodges in the SPJST, one of the best organizations I would ever want to be associated with. However, good people make good organizations and some of the best people belong to Lodge 18.

By the way, the door prize was won by yours truly, Dale Kessel.

49, Rowena Meets for Quarterly Meeting Lodge

Lodge 49, Rowena met on February 1 at the lodge hall in Rowena.

President Elizabeth Walther opened the meeting and lead us in the Pledge to the U.S. flag. A moment of silence was then observed for all departed members.

Secretary Nancy Schwertner gave the roll call. She then read the minutes from the November meeting.

Several thank you cards were read thanking Lodge 49 for contributing turkeys for Christmas to rest homes in Needville and Ballinger.

Lodge 49 will have six 50-year members this year. They are David Dorotik, Robert Dorotik, Bobby Joe Hejl, Del Roy Jezek, Adeline Martin and James Teplicek.

An Awards Banquet will be held on March 11 at SPJST Lodge 80, in Holland. Sales Representatives Billy Rollwitz and Elizabeth Walther will be recognized at this banquet.

A flea market will be held at the SPJST Hall in Rowena on March 4 from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. Anyone is welcome

to set up Friday evening. A booth space will be $6.00 and the lodge will furnish one table. Barbecue sandwiches will also be for sale.

All of the SPJST books for 1994 have been audited and found correct and balanced.

Elizabeth Urbanek is still collecting eyeglasses for the Lions Club.

District Four Director Stanley Broz gave his report. He then encouraged all members to participate in the Tarok and 42 domino tournaments.

Pauline Shiller reported on the Czech Heritage Society. The next meeting will be held in Rowena on February 19 at 2:30 p.m.

The next quarterly meeting will be on May 3 at 7 p.m. at the lodge hall in Rowena.

The monthly meeting of Lodge 79, Corpus Christi was held January 15, 1995. All officers, 16 members, and two guests were present. A moment of silence was observed for our departed member, Debbie Tepera.

New policies were read. Those applying for membership into Lodge 79 were Christina Carter, Melissa Carter, Matthew Helm, Katie Helm, Clayton Roth, and Emily Michelle Sacky. The membership present voted to accept these applicants and welcomed their membership.

Minutes from the December meeting and the treasurer's report were approved as read.

Our fraternal activities coordinator, Sister Glenda Elzner, read a roster of upcoming SPJST events for the state. It is very important for members to get and fill out yearly worksheets showing volunteer acts performed. Sister Glenda will have some of the 1995 forms at our meeting. If you are unable to attend, please call Glenda. I am sure she will send you one. Her phone number, is 241-1965.

Brother Jim Weist, our district field representative, is going to be checking figures to see which incentive award our lodge has earned. He congratulated the membership and commented that we always need more insurance sales. He encouraged those present to "Go for the Gold in '95." He mentioned a new type of insurance available, which is rather inexpensive and is excellent for the small

business man, perhaps self-employed or the young family just getting started.

Brother Bob Bayer, District Seven Director, visited and reiterated the importance of the Volunteer Acts Worksheet so we (SPJST) can keep our tax-free status.

He said of 107 lodges, only 83 reported.

This is very urgent.

Our guest, Irena Bauta, from Poland was visiting with Jerry and Milly Elzner and showing her appreciation of their hospitality by cooking Polish dishes. She prepared a delicious cabbage dish for our covered dish social following the meeting.

President Jerry Sijansky brought up the liability insurance we must purchase.

He presented a package (by a company from Kansas City) which is just what we need. This company has an A+ rating, which is super excellent. It was voted to mail the premium right away.

The spring meeting will be April 30 in Corpus Christi. Discussion will take place at the next meeting for food to be served, etc. Please be at this meeting and bring your ideas.

The January charitable donation will go to Sokol Corpus Christi.

Door prizes brought by Brother Bob Bayer were won by Milly Elzner (an SPJST insulated mug); Sister Helen Pavelka (an SPJST apron); Irena Bauta, our guest (an SPJST pen); Sister Della Elzner (an SPJST pen); and Sister Glenda Elzner (an SPJST cap).

Lodge 80, Holland Reports on February Meeting Members of Lodge 80, Holland were called to order at 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 5, 1995, by President Harold Rohde.

After a moment of silence for departed members and the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag, Brother Rohde asked for the reading of the minutes from the January meeting by Secretary-Treasurer Glen Latham. They were approved as read.

Brother Latham also gave the commit tee reports with all doing quite well.

Keep up the fine work!

A letter from the Supreme Lodge was read about our refund on policies for the year, along with the upcoming awards banquet to be held at Lodge 80, Holland, and the Officer's Workshop at Lodge 177, Academy on Saturday, March 11, 1995.

Brother Latham also stated that the American Legion had donated $850 to the parking lot pavement fund. Thank you very much!

Two hundred fifty dollars was put into the Moran Burns Scholarship fund which the lodge sponsors for a graduating senior each year from Holland High School.

New members accepted into the lodge were Matthew Johnson and Travis Richter. Hope to see you at the next meeting.

A motion was made by Rick Benner and seconded by Coleman Benner that the lodge meeting be changed to 4:30 p.m. on the first Sunday of the month with a covered dish meal to follow. The lodge would provide the meat and the members would provide the trimmings. The motion carried. So the March meeting will be at 4:30 p.m. with the Board of Directors meeting at 4 p.m. See you then!

On Saturday, February 25, 1995, the lodge will be hosting an Arts and Crafts and Garage Sale Show starting at 8:30 a.m. Booth spaces are still available for $10 per space. Contact Harold Rohde at 817-657-2781 for more information. The lodge will have barbecue beef, sausage, and ribs to go at the pit beginning at 9 a.m. that morning. Admission to the show is free! Hope to see you there.

On Sunday, February 26, the lodge will host the Annual Youth Banquet for those in the community who are involved in the Bell County Youth Fair.

81, Needville Reports on January Meeting

Lodge

Let me start off by introducing myself.

I was elected by Lodge 81 to be the reporter. My name is Delores Macha. my husband, Adolf Macha, is the president of Lodge 81. I will have a big job to

Lodge 87, Temple Member Recognized as Professional Educator of the Month Congratulations to Sister Gladys Valchar, a member of Lodge 87, Temple, who was recently cited as the Irving Independent School District's Educator of the Month. The honor was presented to Sister Valchar, a school counselor, on Monday, January 23 during a meeting of the IISD Trustees.

Sister Gladys, who is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Valchar of Temple, Texas, is a graduate of Temple High do to replace Mrs. Louis Newman. She did a wonderful job and everyone enjoyed reading her article every month.

Also, her daughter-in-law, Jeanette Newman wrote the articles the last few months due to Mrs. Newman's injury to her arm. You both did a great job and we send a big thanks to you both.

Thirty-three members and four guests attended the Sunday, January 15, 1995, meeting held in our lodge hall in Needville. For our noon meal, the lodge provided baked and fried chicken.

Thanks to President Macha for picking up the chicken. The good cooks of Lodge 81 brought vegetables, salads, and desserts to make a delicious meal. The Kitchen Committee thanks everyone who brought food.

At 1 p.m., President Adolph Macha called the business meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Sister Delores Macha. All officers were present except Vice President Vincent Joe Newman. Due to being self-employed, Vincent was unable to attend.

The minutes of the December meeting were read by Secretary Mary Werner and were accepted with one minor correction.

Treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendall presented the monthly financial report. It was accepted as read. Gilbert Walzel, our special fund chairman, began his report with the calendar of events for the lodge hall for the coming month. His financial report covered the monthly income and expenses of the Special Fund. He also gave the annual report for the year of 1994. Gilbert indicated that the books are ready to be audited.

A moment of silence was observed in memory of our departed brother, Victor Schmidt. May he rest in peace.

Sympathy is extended to his family.

Our sick list includes Alvina Gajevsky, LeRoy Bosak, and Vlasta Zemonek. Our prayer is for a speedy recovery for each of you. Also one of our 1994 scholar recipients, James Pavlicek, has been ill.

We hope you are feeling better.

Under old business, the item on the barbecue pit was brought up. Adolph Macha checked on the price to get one fixed. The price is approximately $150.00. It was decided to have it done. Nothing has been heard from the Guy lodge pertaining to the merger with our lodge.

In new business, it was decided to change our April meeting, which falls on Easter Sunday, to the second Sunday, which is April 9. Mark your calendars now for this change.

Our "Age 96", 75-year, and 50-year members will be honored on March 19, 1995, during our regular meeting time.

The four visitors at our January meeting were Evelyn Mikeska, Fred C. Buri, and his wife, JoAnn, and Fred's mother, Mrs. Josephine Buri.

Mr. Buri is the Tax Director of District Five. He spoke to us and reported that the scholarship drive is complete and was very successful. Evelyn Mikeska,

and School Temple Junior College. She received a bachelor's degree in math and a master's degree in counseling from North Texas State University.

District Five President, invited us to the spring meeting in Pasadena. We were happy to have all of you present and we invite you all to come back and visit with us again. You are always welcome.

Winners of the monetary door prizes, donated by the lodge, were Edwin Susan, Sophie Baethe, Winnie Susan, and Mary Matcek. Thanks to the members who donated additional prizes. The members were Olga Polasek, Mary Matcek, Louise Newman, Sophie Baethe, Evelyn Mikeska, Josephine Buri, Vlasta Nowotny, Edwin Susan, the Victor Werners, the Adolph Machas, the Alvin Blinkas, the Jerry Kubalas, and the Walter Andersons. We had Christmas in January because so many members donated prizes. Nearly everyone present received a prize-that is wonderful.

At our next meeting, it was decided to have a pot luck lunch. Therefore, ladies, we need to bring a meat, vegetable, and dessert. Don't forget our next meeting on Sunday, February 19, 1995. Bring a visitor and enjoy good fellowship.

Dear Vestnik Readers, I have written letters in the past to the Vestnik and in all of the previous cases it has been to tell good news.

Unfortunately, this time is the exception.

I have attached a letter that I wrote to The Mother Lodge No. 84 in the hopes that by it being published in the Vestnik it will prevent other lodges from following the same path as our lodge. This is not to embarrass or humiliate any person or persons but rather help others to learn from our misfortune.

Fraternally yours, Camille A. Payne Dear Vestnik Readers, I have been an active member of Lodge No. 84 since 1962. I have held numerous offices in both the Youth Club and the Teen Club including President. I participated in Y.A.D. and Czech Day at the State Fair of Texas, representing our lodge. I was Queen of our lodge and went on to represent Lodge No. 84 in District Three competition. After college, I became a quiet supporter of our lodge and helped on calling committees, financially and whenever called upon. I served as Advertising for the Mother Lodge in 1992. I have always been proud to be a member and participant and willing to help better the lodge. It was my understanding that fraternalism meant being brotherly and charitable to our fellow members.

We should be praising those people who devote their time and lives for the lodge. But instead, we are making their lives unbearable by our constant complaining and bickering. At one time, I _ _ ....... _

8/VESTNIK—Wednesday, February 15, 1995 looked forward to having my three (3) sisters and one (1) brother, nieces, nephews, and my own children becoming active again in Lodge No. 84. I also felt that those members who had stopped attending would follow the lead and thus help towards keeping this lodge in existence in the future.

After the first meeting of the year, I feel that we all need to be reminded that charity, compassion, and fraternalism are the foundation to the lodge.

Unfortunately, these were not exercised and some of our officers have since resigned.

I feel that in order to continue this lodge it is extremely important to not only include old members who might have not been active recently and allow them to feel needed, but to also invite and involve new members. And, since all of the work is for the betterment of a fraternal organization, I think it is somewhat ironic that those asked to help, want to do so only on their terms. That is not fraternalism or charity and far beyond those, it is down-right rude.

It both saddens and appals me that an institution that I grew up with has become not an organization of brotherly love and compassion but rather that of hatred for thy brother. To show such lack of respect for your elected officers and more than that, people, amazes me, since this is a fraternal brotherly organization. Maybe, with these kinds of examples, this is why our next generations show such lack of respect for their fellow man.

It is for these reasons that I am relinquishing my responsibilities as both Advertising and Publications and the Young Adult Committee. I do not feel that at this time it would be a positive move for myself or my family to become involved in the lodge.

I do not know if a formal apology would mend all of the holes amongst our members, but it seems that it is definitely a start.

Lodge 130, Dallas Reports on January Meeting On January 16, 1995, Lodge 130, Dallas held the regular monthly meeting.

President Keith Shinn lead the Pledge of Allegiance following a delicious sandwich supper provided by our members.

A moment of silence was held for deceased member Handley Booth, Jr. The meeting continued with the reading of the minutes, treasurer's report and

correspondence from CEFT regarding award presentations. Also, a letter was read from State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Frank Klinkovsky urging our members to account for any fraternal activities and services on the forms provided by him.

Beseda Director Martha Vrla read correspondence from Lodge 92 in Fort Worth requesting that we perform at their 85th anniversary celebration in September. Also, the Dallas International Celebration will be held in August and we will be receiving additional information. Further, a request was received from SMU to perform on February 7 for a group of students who will be visiting the Czech Republic and Slovakia. (We did perform for them, and we were wellreceived by the audience.)

Under old business, election of officers for 1995 was held, with the following results:

Rose Ann Parma The Legal Committee reported that the status of the agreement between Lodge 130 and Sokol is still not finalized. Our next regularly scheduled meeting will be held on February 20 at 7:30 p.m. at Lodge 84 in the Youth Room.

Members were once more reminded that inasmuch as Lodge 84 has been so gracious to permit us to hold our meeting at their lodge, we should make every effort to support their activities and offer our services whenever possible.

148, El Maton Reports on January Meeting

On January 24, the Lodge 148, El Maton meeting was called to order by President Frank Hahn, Sr. Books for 1994 were audited by Ed Dornak and Martha Hlozek.

Lodge 172, Pasadena Czech Classes Begin Czech classes began at Lodge 172, Pasadena on Monday, February 6 at 7 p.m. Lodge 172 is located at 3609 Preston in Pasadena.

The instructor for the class is Alene Svehlikova, formerly of Brno, Czech Republic.

The class consists of ten lessons each Monday evening. Non-members are welcome and there is no charge for the lessons.

196, Houston Northwest Reports on January Meeting Lodge

On Sunday, January 29, Lodge 196, Houston Northwest held its meeting at Katy VFW Hall. President Castillo called the meeting to order and lead the Pledge of Allegiance. All officers answered the roll call.

The minutes and treasurer's report was read and approved.

The building committee report was given by Michael Moore after which there was a period of questions and discussion or suggestions pertaining to our moving ahead. We voted to set aside monies for this committee to go forward with the job of getting the land ready and bids.

McLennan-Hill Chapter Czech Heritage Society of Texas Reports on January Meeting Mrs. Dorothy Pechal, Museum Curator and Librarian of the SPJST Museum in Temple, presented a program on January 8 at the McLennan-Hill Chapter Czech Heritage Society of Texas, meeting at the Community Center in West. She displayed some items from the museum and described the vast collection of Czech-Slovak memorabilia at the museum. She also spoke on genealogy.

Mrs. Pechal received a gift, Czech Reflections, a book from the Chapter.

Another copy of the book was donated to the SPJST Museum by the Chapter.

McLennan-Hill Chapter has 166 members. Sister Pechal spoke at the group's January meeting. The book is currently for sale in the West area and through mail order purchase.

Four members are accordion musicians. They are Dr. Jim Bezdek, Joseph Kaspar, Alphonse Urbanovsky, and Albin Matus.

President Alfred Gerik told an interesting story on telephones used by our grandparents. The phones were a mahogany wooden box with a crank on the side. They were hung on the wall.

Instead of dialing, you had to turn the crank to get the central (operator) to answer. Then the operator would contact the person you were calling by the number of rings assigned to this person.

When the phone rang, you counted the rings. If it wasn't your number of rings, you just let it ring. If you wanted to know what was going on in the neighborhood, you just picked up the receiver and listened.

Rudolph Stanislav distributed "Four Generation Chart" forms and encouraged members to start their own pedigree genealogy chart.

Among the guests were Rev. Melvin Dolnar from the Church of Assumption in West and Robert Grof, exchange student from Velke Bilovice, Czech Republic, attending McLennan Community College in Waco, Texas.

Old business included our Christmas Party which was held on December 18, 1994. For our program, Natalie Simcik explained the significance and symbolic meaning of the Czech Christmas ornaments hanging on the tree, decorated by Henrietta Cervenka.

Outgoing President Ernest "Bobo" Jaska thanked members and everyone who contributed to making his term in office a very successful two years.

Two 1994 plaques of recognition were awarded by President Jaska to Mary Dvorak for the outstanding member of the Chapter for the work she did on the publication of Czech Reflections and to Willa Mae Cervenka for her vast activities, newsletters, publications, newspaper stories and on-going publicity in promoting the Czech heritage.

Ella Macik was recognized for her work, as social hostess chairperson.

Memoriam Expression of Sympathy

We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 26, Skidmore, wish to express heartfelt sympathy on behalf of our entire membership to the family of POLLY ANN TRIAL, who passed away on January 4, 1995, in Bee County Regional Medical Center, at the age of 46.

Rosary was held at 7 p.m. Friday, January 6 at Galloway and Sons Chapel.

Funeral mass was celebrated at 2 p.m.

Saturday, January 7 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with Father John Wojtasczyk officiating. Burial was in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Beeville.

Sister Trial was born April 11, 1948, in Beeville to Annie (Lesikar) and George Hanus. She married Charles B. Trial in Beeville on August 27, 1966. She had been employed as an office manager and was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

Survivors include her husband, Charles B. Trial of Beeville; two daughters, Theresa Sparks of Bryan and Christie Trial of Houston; her parents, George and Annie Hanus of the Olmos Community; a sister, Georgia Ann Gabriel of Baytown; and two grandchildren, Chet Sparks and Christian Quijano.

Pallbearers were Roy Gene Hanus, Keith Cunningham, Larry Bergen, Jason Trial, Clifton Wengler and Allen Bohac.

Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Al Stevenson and Randall Stephenson.

Rosary was at 7 p.m. on Friday, November 18, 1994, in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel, and Mass was at 2 p.m.

Saturday, November 19, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Rowena with the Rev. Kevin Heyburn officiating. Burial followed in St. Joseph's Cemetery.

Tonye was born June 6, 1904, in Rowena to the late Frank and Anna Dorotik. She led a long and full life, most of which was spent in Rowena. She was a sales representative of many area florists for many years. During the 1960s, she also catered weddings for flowers, garments and decorations. In 1972, she received a citizenship plaque, given by the Rowena Lions Club for outstanding community service. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 49, Rowena.

Tonye was married to Joe D. Marecek in 1928 - Rov.'er.2. :receded her in death in January 197i. She was also preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, James and Gayle Marecek of San Angelo; two sisters, Mary Marecek of Rowena and Caroline Kvapil of Mereta; five grandchildren, Scott, Rhonda, Debbie, Stephanie, and David; 13 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Robert Dorotik, Gene Kvapil, Bernie Marecek, Dan Marecek, Donald Hejl and Bobby Hejl.

Mr. Motl died Friday, January 6, 1995, in an Angleton hospital.

Born in Seaton to John F. Motl and Louisa Malina Motl, he lived in the Seaton and Temple area all of his life. He worked for Griggs Equipment Company in Belton as a tool and die maker. He also sold insurance for RVOS. He was a member of Temple Brethren Church and a member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton.

He married Agnes Bartek and he then later married Elizabeth Sefcik Jeter.

Survivors are one daughter, Sylvia Glenn of Angleton; two step-daughters Pam Pekar of Granger and Paula Howeth of Houston; a sister, Angelina Watson of Franklin; two grandchildren; and fouT step-grandchildren.

Services were held Saturday, December 3, 1994, at 2 p.m. at Immanuel United Church of Christ in Needville with the Rev. George Kiebler officiating.

The burial was in the Friedens United Church of Christ Cemetery in Beasley, Texas.

Mr. Bredecka was born March 12, 1911, in Needville, Texas. His parents were Frank H. Bredecka, Sr. and Mary Butha Bredecka. He worked as a farmer and was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Elsie Bredecka of Needville; two daughters, Biari Girven and husband Karry of Pearland, and Trudy Harris of Pearland; his grandchildren, Desire Harris of Houston, Lance Harris and his wife Tina of Key West, Florida, Cary Lamensky and wife Thresa of Rosenberg, and Drett Lamensky of Rosenberg; and greatgrandchildren, Justin Lamansky, David Harris, and Kayla Harris; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was born in Bell County to Olin Lester McClendon and Esther L. French McClendon. He had lived in Holland since 1986. He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of SPJST and the VFW in Harker Heights. He was a Protestant. He worked for 22 years as a building mover.

Survivors are his wife, Evelyn McClendon of Holland; a daughter, Cindy Yates of Austin; a son, Ken McCormick of Austin; and a sister, Jennett McKinley of Zabcikville.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Friday, January 6, 1995, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Rockdale. Bishop John McCarthy, Rev. Victor Mathias, Rev. Lonnie Urban, Rev. Elmer Holtman, Rev. Paul McCallum and Deacon Allen Menke concelebrated mass with 47 priests from the Austin Diocese. Burial followed at 1.0.0.F. Cemetery.

A rosary and prayer service was held Thursday night, January 5, at Phillips and Lucky Funeral Home in Rockdale.

Leonora was born in Caldwell to Peter and Pelagia (Sczkorzincki) Budnik. She married Alonzo A. Urban on June 24, 1939, in Caldwell..

She graduated from St. Anthony's High School in Beaumont and from nursing school at St. Joseph's in Houston.

She worked as a nurse at St. Joseph's in Houston, St. Edwards in Cameron, and at Richards Hospital in Rockdale.

She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Rockdale, St. Joseph's Ladies Society, the American Nursing Association, Greater Austin Polish Americans, and Lodge 174.

Pallbearers were Michael Belczak, Alfons Budnik, Julian Kosh, Tom Kosh, David Polansky, and Patrick Polansky.

Honorary pallbearers were Vance McManus, Wesley Corder, Gabriel

Garza, Leonard Hranicky, Clarence Krenek, Ladis Matous, Linwood Mehaffey, Lambert Skubal, Sr., and Dr. Phillip Young.

Survivors include her husband, Dr. Alonzo A. Urban of Rockdale; three sons, Rev. Lonnie Urban of Taylor, Dan Urban of Austin and Robert Urban of Rockdale; two daughters, Charlotte Belczak of Palos Heights, Illinois, and Elizabeth Buchanan of Rockdale; a sister, Sophia Polansky of Caldwell; 16 grandchildren and two greatgrand- children.

Mrs. Urban was preceded in death by a son, Edward Joseph; and by brothers, Anton Budnik, Father Maximillian Budnik, Theodore Budnik, Cashmir (Pete) Budnik, Alfonse Budnik and Sylvester Budnik.

Memorials may be made to St. Joseph's Catholic Church or to any charity.

Expression of Sympathy We, the officers of Lodge 81, Needville, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother, VINCENT JOHN NEWMAN, age 86 years of Needville, who passed away Saturday, December 3, 1994.

Services were Tuesday, December 6, 1994, at 4 p.m. at the Garmany and Cadden Chapel in Richmond with the Rev. Richard Avery officiating the service. Burial was in the Motton Cemetery in Richmond.

Pallbearers were Allen Kramer, George Kneitz, A.E. Sloan, Tom McNutt, and Elvin Meyer. The brothers of local SPJST Lodge 81, Needville were Honorary Pallbearers.

Brother Newman was born on September 18, 1908, in Lukavice, Czechoslovakia. As a foreign exchange student, he attended Texas A & M University and received a degree in architecture and structural engineering in 1931. After ten years of overseas employment, he returned to Texas where he worked for the Texas Department and the Fluor Corporation. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 81 for many years.

His survivors include his wife of 51 years, Marie Louise Newman of Needville; one son, Vincent Joe Newman and his wife Jeanette of Needville; one daughter, Valerie Kramer and husband Donald of Rosenberg; three granddaughters, Cheryl Newman, Amanda Newman and Lynette Newman, all of Needville; his niece, Moydale McNutt of Rosenberg; his grand nephew Tom McNutt; numerous relatives in the Czech Republic; and three foreign exchange granddaughters, Sophia Aguilar of Brazil, Caroline Brandin of Sweden, and Denise Ganzmann of Switzerland.

He is proceeded in death by his parents, six brothers and sisters in the Czech Republic, a brother, J.J. Newman of Pleak, and a nephew, Jerome Newman of Richman.

May our departed brother rest in peace and his memory remain with us forever.

Mr. Tomastik was born in Eddy. He lived in the Little River-Academy area all of his life. He was an electrician, a member of Sparks Baptist Church and SPJST Lodge 177, Academy.

Survivors are two sons, George Tomastik of Sparks and David Tomastik of Little River; two daughters, Dedra Tomastik of Austin and Gay Lynn Goodman of Bryan-College Station; his mother, Billie Jeane Pairett of Little River; his father, Jerry L. Tomastik of Temple; three brothers, James Tomastik of Austin, Robert Tomastik of Little River and Bruce Tomastik of Sparks; two sisters, Delores Lisenbe of Odessa and Amy Powell of Houston; five stepbrothers; his grandmother, Stella Beckett of Gatesville; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 25, 1995, at 1 p.m. at the Little River Methodist Church with the Rev. John Decker officiating.

Burial was in Wilson Valley Cemetery with Hewett Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Rosary was at 7 p.m. on Monday, January 23, 1995, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rowena. Mass was at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, January 24 at the church and burial was in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

Mrs. Marek was born December 15, 1910, in Rowena. She had worked as a teller at the First National Bank in Rowena for 27 years. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Ann's Altar Society and SPJST Lodge 49, Rowena.

Survivors include two sons, J.D. Marek of San Antonio and Bill Marek of Dallas; four grandchildren; and ten greatgrandchildren.

Expression of Sympathy We, the officers and members of Lodge 49, Rowena wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of PHILIP A. LORFING. Philip A. Lorfing, 74, died Wednesday, December 7, 1994, at his farm near Lowake.

Services were at 10 a.m. Saturday, December 10, 1994, at Calvary Lutheran Church in San Angelo with the Rev. Timothy Koenig, pastor, officiating.

Masonic graveside rites were held at 11:30 a.m. in Rowena Protestant Cemetery.

Mr. Lorfing was born December 14, 1919, in Hallettsville to Philip and Barbara Lorfing. He graduated from Schulenberg High School and attended Texas Lutheran College. He was a veteran of World War Two, having served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

He married Rose Anderson on June 11, 1961. They owned and operated the Original Lowake Inn Steak House until 1979.

A charter member of Calvary Lutheran Church in San Angelo, he served on the Paint Rock School Board and Concho County Hospital Board. He was a past deputy district governor of the Lions Club. He was also a 32nd KCCH Mason and a member of the Paint Rock lodge and a Suez Temple Shriner. He recently received his 50-year membership pin from the Hermann Sons Lodge of Rowena.

Survivors include his wife, Rose; daughters, Deanna Lackey and husband, Jerry, Toni Smith and husband, Kerry, of Winters; a stepson, Brad Anderson and Rose Begil, both of San Angelo; three brothers, Art Lorfing of Kerrville, John Lorfing of Hallettsville, and Fritz Lorfing of Houston; three sisters, Margaret Woytek of Seguin, Adele Opela of Hallettsville, and Tillie Werner of Austin; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, a sister and a stepson.

Pallbearers were Stanley Broz, Werner Halfmann, Benny Schroeder, August Haechten, Lloyd Lisso, Lonnie Rakin, and Ralph Willberg.

Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club invites you to "Sweetheart Night" on Saturday, February 18 from 7:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. at Flag Hall in Cyclone.

Various types of music will be played during the evening for your listening and dancing enjoyment. Favorite "sweetheart" songs will also be played. Food, soft drinks, and games will be available throughout the evening.

We will have a singing contest at 9:30 p.m. The two categories for contestants to win prizes will be country and rock/alternative. Here's your chance to shine in the spotlight!

At 10:30 p.m., get your partner for the country dance contest. The best dancing couple will win. The rock/alternative dance contest will immediately follow.

Admission for "Sweetheart Night" is $3.00 for ages 6 to 18 years and $1.00 for adults and children ages 5 years and under.

The objective of Cyclone Youth Club's "youth nights" is to provide fun and entertainment in a safe haven for youth in the community.

Lodge 30, Taiton youth members and their parents met for the Taiton monthly meeting at 2 p.m. at the Taiton Community Center.

After the meeting, the youth club members and adults surprised and recognized myself, Karen Kaspar, and Mrs. Annimae Merta for service to the Taiton SPJST. It was such a nice and wonderful surprise and just so very "special"!

Thank you so much to Lisa Bubela, Taiton Youth Leader, and Monica Staff, Taiton Assistant Youth Leader, all the parents, and all the youth club members for the most special surprise and for the silk flower arrangement gift. I have already hung it up on my wall and I think of you all every time I pass it.

Over the years, I , as past Taiton youth leader and assistant youth leader have always been so proud of all the participation and accomplishments of the youth members of the Taiton SPJST club. I look forward as District Six Assistant Youth Counselor to continued success and growth to all you very special youth, adults, and leaders of the Taiton SPJST club.

Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje Youth Club Reports on February Meeting Bonjour Readers, The February 2 meeting of Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje Youth Club was called to order by President Jody Krpec. There were five members present. Ross Juranek led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Secretary Lisa Reck read the minutes, and they were approved as read.

Treasurer Martha Bartos gave the treasurer's report.

New business included the leader-intraining (LIT) workshop on June 2-4 at Camp Butman. The District Six Camp is June 30-July 2 at Camp Lone Star.

Poems were read and door prizes were awarded. Congratulations to Jody Krpec for guessing the correct amount to win the contest.

We sung "Happy Birthday" to Martha Bartos.

Next month's project is making something for St. Patrick's Day. After the meeting, members enjoyed working on puzzles and crafts.

The next meeting is March 2 in the Commercial State Bank Gold Room.

The English "I am sorry" in Czech means "Je mi Tito" (or "Ja lituji").

The Czech phrase is used in the same sense as the original meaning of "I am sorry", but generally, we can say that "Je mi Ifto" is used much more sparingly than "I am sorry". The latter can often be translated "odpust'te" or "promifite".

In Czech you ask it when you want to know how your friend is doing and not instead of "good morning". In other words, in answer to "jak se ma g " in Czech, you may hear a little longer story than the stereotype "fine, thank you."
