The Uncorrected Minutes r: the December 16, 1994 Special Meeting of the Supreme Lodge SPJST held at the Home Office in Temple, Texas The meeting was called to order by Chairman of the Board Pokladnik at 10:00 a.m. with the following Supreme Lodge Members present.

Meeting recessed from 2:30 p.m. to 2:45 p.m..

The schedule decided was: Friday night — 8:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. - top entertainer.

Saturday night — 9:00 p.m. to 12:30 p.m. - workshop and Incentive Awards 1:00 p.m - banquet evening -'adult and teen dances Sunday — 11:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. - members appreciation and lunch It was decided to invite some well know dignitaries in Texas such as Leon Hay of the Houston Chronicles, the governor of Texas, Professor Birdall from Texas University, and some national dignitaries.

By common consent it was decided that a logo and theme needed to be decided on and publicity needs to begin now.

Chairman of the Board Pokladnik stated the 100TH ANNIVERSARY needs to be placed on the agenda of the Supreme Lodge each meeting to discuss any plans for the celebration.

Director Vavra was not present due to illness.

Meeting adjourned at 3:55 p.m.

Chairman Pokladnik reminded the Board members that this was a special Board Meeting to discuss SPJST's 100TH ANNIVERSARY and for any other item to be discussed at this meeting it would have to be approved unanimously. A motion was made by President Leshikar, seconded by Director Hanus to discuss bonuses to the employees. Those voting against discussing bonuses in this meeting were: Director Vanek, Director Broz, Director Kohutek, Director Bayer, and Chairman Pokladnik.

Voting in favor of discussing bonuses for the employees were: President Leshikar, Vice President Mikeska, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Hanus. Motion failed.

Director Broz made a motion to review the performance of Secretary-Treasurer Anglin in accordance with the By-Laws since it had been six months after her appointment, seconded by President Leshikar. Voting in favor were: President Leshikar, Vice President Mikeska, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Kohutek, Director Broz, Director Hanus, and Director Bayer. Voting against were: Director Vanek and Chairman of the Board Pokladnik, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin abstained. Since the vote was not unanimous, the review will be postponed until the next regular meeting.

100TH ANNIVERSARY — It was recommended to set a dollar amount for the 100TH ANNIVERSARY budget and to begin setting up liability of one-fourth of the budget every year until 1997.

Legal Advisor Kacir recommended for a budget for $50,000 plus the amount spent on the officers' workshop, and the lodge incentive awards banquet for 1994. President Leshikar reminded the Board the Expo Center would cost about $8,000.00 for two nights. A recommendation was made to only pay mileage to those who participate in the workshop, Incentive Awards Banquet, choral group, and orchestra.

It was suggested for the Officers to visit the Expo Center before the January meeting and make a report. President Leshikar was requested to mail a brochure with a physical layout to Board members before the January Board meeting.

There was much discussion about a top name entertainer that might be selected to perform. It was decided that any performers would need to meet the SPJST's standards in their character. It might be possible for a local radio station to handle the promotion of the performer and also do a live broadcast from the 100TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION. Director Hanus suggested the possibility of the top performer to be an athlete of Czech heritage.

There was a discussion of having a walk-thru. The walk-thru could include a fifteen minute film that would run continuously and also some pictures of the SPJST from the past. It was the Board's opinion that it would be nice to honor all of the 50 and 75 year members. These members could be presented with some type of recognition such as a ribbon, certificate, or pin.

The meeting recessed for lunch at 11:45 a.m. until 1:25 p.m.

After much discussion it was decided to divide the suggestions for the 100th Anniversary into four main categories: 1. A commemorative project which would include state wide charity projects in which all of the local lodges could participate.

Karas at Hastings High School in Alief, Texas. As noted in his article in the Vestnik on December 21, 1994, it was one of serious studies. Mr. Karas brought so much experience, knowledge, and delight into his , sessions,. Even though we as a group had to work at learning in grasping the lessons taught, it was with enjoyment.

Mr. Karas taught in a professional manner but with humor and techniques to maintain a learner's interest. It is a course I would highly recommend with Mr. Karas as the instructor.

resurgence of ethnic pride and Czech heritage renewal. As a member of a Czech singing group, I am very fortunate to be able to actively participate in the renewal and preservation of our Czech heritage.

Although I am able to converse in the Czech language, I have so much more to learn and I especially appreciate the Czech articles which appear in your newspaper. These articles, along with the Czech language lessons are helping to keep the Czech language alive in Texas.

Mr. John J. Karas of Houston, Texas, especially, has submitted numerous articles to the Czech American press dealing with our Czech heritage. His expert Czech language classes, active CzechAmerican organizational support, his fully-costumed appearance at Czech festivals, and such things as offering his artistic talents to the CESAT brochure have contributed to keep our Czech American population in full-recognition of their heritage. Thank you, Mr. Karas, for your devotion to encouraging Czech ethnic awareness, and thank you, Mr. Vanicek, for offering a medium through which it can be expressed. 6/VESTNIK—Wednesday, January 18, 1995 and gave out candy canes. Each member received an apple and an orange. Gifts were given out. Santa then wished a Merry Christmas to all and he departed to the North Pole.

A delicious lunch of various goodies brought by the members was served from a festively, decorated table. Annie Vahalik gave the meal blessing.

Following lunch, bingo was played with Joe Spitak as caller and various Christmas items were given as prizes. It was a lot of fun for all.

Door prize winners were Viola Holly, Joe Balusek, Philip Vahalik, Elizabeth Vahalik, and Trevor Scott.

Lodge 24, Cyclone Presents Scenes from Christmas Party Herman Mayeux, who was in charge of smoking the turkeys, displays his handywork. In addition to the turkey, lodge members enjoyed turkey dinner and a wide range of covered dish fixings and desserts.

Congratulations to President Annie Vahalik and her husband, Philip, on the birth of their third child, a son. Jonathan Joseph was born Tuesday, November 29.

He is welcomed home by a brother, Nicholas, and sister, Elizabeth. Jonathan was only two weeks old, but he was present at the meeting and party with his family.

The January meeting was set for Sunday, January 8 at 2 p.m. Director Matt Vanek was scheduled to be present to install the officers.

Lodge 23, Moravia Reports on December Meeting Lodge 23, Moravia held their meeting and Christmas Party on December 11, 1994. The event was well attended.

During the meeting, 50-year membership pins were presented to the following members: Viola Davilek, Caroline Hrachory, Edith Kalina, Viola Klesel, Lorene Vaculik, Viola Kutoc, Milton Trlica, and Lillie Zatopek. Unable to attend were Pearl Hohensee, Carolina Karesta, Dolores Sheby, Emil Vrana III, and Vlasta Bolf.

After the meeting was adjourned, several door prizes were given. The winners were 011ie Pospisil (gift box of food), Steven Klesel (gift box of food), and Mildred Blabuta (box of candy). These gifts were donated by Lodge 23. The following door prizes were donated by District Six Director Matt Vanek: rain gauge, won by Dorothy Olsovsky; SPJST bracelet, won by Harlen Kubos; key chain won by Pat Klesel; and a set of dominoes, won by Madalene Vaculik.

Refreshments were served and a lunch of sandwiches and desserts was enjoyed by all present.

40, El Campo-Hillje to Host Tarok Tournament on January 21 Lodge

Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje will host the Second Annual Tarok Tournament on Saturday, January 21, 1995, at SPJST Lodge 40 in Hillje, Texas.

66, Waco Reports on January Meeting Lodge

A meeting of SPJST Lodge 66, Waco was held at 2 p.m. on January 8, 1995, at Linden Hall. Flags were presented by Alicia Neslony, Justin Engelke, Shane Pruitt, Sandra Trickett, and Candice McAdams, all members of our youth club. Jesika Tierce led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Justin Engelke gave the SPJST Motto. They are members of our youth club.

President Keith Gatewood asked all members to remain standing for a moment of silence for Brother Johnnie M. Craddock of Strawn, Texas, and for

Brother Billy Ray Lowe of Bremond, Texas, who recently passed away, and for all of our deceased members.

Brother Kieth announced that before the regular business meeting, the election of officers, board of directors and committees would be held. Each officer elected would preside over the remainder of the business meeting. Secretary Ashley Locke read the correspondence concerning interesting information.

Everyone attending thoroughly enjoys the game nights on the second Monday of each month. Each family brings a snack to be shared by all, and the food is always great. Our FAC Sister Langlotz said these are really fun nights and encourages more members to come out and join us, just in time to sharpen your skills before the State Taroky Tournament on Feburary 18 at Lodge 66, Linden Hall, the State Straight Domino Tournament on February 25 at the SPJST Hall in Taylor, and the State "42" Domino Tournament on April 1 at Lodge 15, Buckholts. Also, the State Horseshoe Tournament will be held on April 15 at Lodge 17 in New Tabor, another activity becoming more popular each year.

Sister Langlotz expressed her appreciation to all Sales Representatives for their efforts in winning the incentive award for Lodge 66 in 1994.

We are glad to have you and hope you will join us soon in our lodge's activities.

Sister Dana McAdams gave the report of the youth club activities. The attendance has been good. There were many activities during the past month, including Christmas caroling, operation of the kitchen for the NewYear's Eve dance; and working on projects for the donation of gifts to four worthy charitable oganizations and, for a nice donation to the "100 Pennies" scholarship fund. They also worked on plans for a Valentine Party and for a "decorate a cookie" contest. The youth club members also furnished a special birthday cake of the month which was presented at the lodge meeting to birthday celebrants present. The January cake was furnished by Brandi McAdams.

Field Representative Brother Kucera reported that he would have a total count of new members for 1994 at the next meeting and was glad to announce that Lodge 66 had achieved the Gold Star Award. He would like to challenge the 1995 sales representatives to exceed sales in 1994. Brother Kucera thanked the past officers for all of their efforts and encouraged new ones "to keep the ball rolling".

Congratulations to Sister Georgia Pavlicek on receiving the nice plaque for the pastry award which was presented by Brother George Pauling.

Brother John Engelke expressed his appreciation for all the help on the "100 Pennies" scholarship drive. The total collected was $207.00. He thanked the lodge for the donation of the meat and for the use of kitchen facilities, making it possible for the youth club to have a very

successful New Year's Eve project.

Sister Polly Gaidusek of the Cheer and Condolence Committee reported a sympathy card was sent to Mr. and Mrs. William Bush on the death of his brother, also to Brother and Sister Eddie Mazacen and family on the death of her nephew. A get-well card was sent to Sister Gladys Pustejovsky who suffered a broken left hip and wrist on December 15 when she fell at her home. She is recuperating nicely. Also, a get-well card was sent to Brother Daniel Nors who has been hospitalized for several weeks suffering from pneumonia and other complications.

Lodge 88, Houston Reports on Entertainment Calendar Dear Members, Entertainment Chairman Viola Cox reports that our lodge New Year's Eve dance was a great success with the Chadelier Ballroom filled to capacity.

Everyone seemed to enjoy that excellent music of popular Gus Lindemann. It was a beautiful and a happy crowd that looked like they could have danced all night!

Lovely Gladys Smallwood surprised Viola with a beautiful bouquet of flowers.

On January 21, we have Big Band Tony Barron from Indiana, which is great music! On January 28, you get a chance to dance to the ever-popular Vrazels, famous for their polkas and variety numbers.

There is a big day coming up in February, and that is our lodge Anniversary Celebration on February 12.

This will include dinner, bingo at 2 p.m. and a dance at 5 p.m. with the popular Lee Roy Matocha.

The members elected to the board are Royal Warnasch, Gene Barcak, Fred Burl. Margaret Allbritton, Willie Wehring, A.J. Stayton, Lynn Pflughaupt, Dorothy Pflughaupt, Karl Lindemann, Ernest Anders, and Jerry Ermis. Tim Kostom was made an honorary member of the board for his many years of active membership.

I was most annoyed with myself for omitting from my "get well" list the name of a dear member who is loved and missed by us all, and that is Shirley Stonaker. She is now at home, and as she told me that she is getting the best care possible from her husband, Roy. They were both active members, and it was a pleasure to be around them! We hope you will be back soon.

Lodge 92, Fort Worth Reports on January Meeting Dear Members and Friends, Now that we have started a new year, as always we think and hope that the year will be better or as good as the past one.

In my last letter, I did not know who would be the reporter. Our new president, who appoints the committees which are not elected, asked me if I would continue to serve as reporter. So, here I go! I will try to write interesting letters about how the lodge is doing and I will also let you know about the members and how they are doing.

I do know that 1994 was not so good in health for our members. There were lots of sickness, and we also had several of our members pass away.

But with all of this, we give thanks for all the good things that did happen. It has been said that we start dying the day we are born. So let's do good while on earth as we do pass this way only once.

Our lodge had a nice Christmas party and now the New Year has started nice.

The meeting was well-attended and business as usual was well-performed.

The committee appointed for activities for our lodge is doing a nice job. They are trying to have several types of entertainment in the future. The next project will be something new at our lodge on January 22. It will be a "goulash dish".

This is not a dinner, but a bowl of goulash and bread that will be ready at 1 p.m. It will be available in the kitchen all evening or until it runs out. There will be a dance with the Henry Rejcek band playing from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. A fee of $7.00 will be charged for the goulash and dance. So I am sure all of you will enjoy something new instead of only barbecue and sausage. Come help make this something to remember.

Before the meeting, several members folded and stuffed the Lodge 92 Activity Schedule of 1995 flyers. Brother Kercho had the flyers and envelopes ready so everything went real fine. The youth club also helped. About 500 flyers are being sent to members and friends. Keep this handy so you can keep up with what will be going on at our lodge. We thank all who helped with this project. I am sure you will enjoy this list of activities.

Lodge 92, Fort Worth Ladies Circle Reports on January Meeting The Ladies Circle of Lodge 92, Fort Worth met for their regular meeting on Tuesday, January 11, 1995, at the lodge hall.

The call to order by President Marie Tesar was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag by the 44 members present, eight men, and two guests, Louise Quatrocchi and Katy Hausey, friends of Inez Krivanek.

The minutes and treasurer's report were read and approved.

President Tesar thanked all for the outgoing president's gift received. She announced that dues for 1995 are due and payable at $3 per member, with repeat that all members, regardless of age, are to pay dues. (Previously, those members 80 years and over were "honorary members" and excluded from dues. But with our decidedly senior group, it was voted to have all pay dues.) Your cooperation with payment as soon as possible to Evelyn Spacek, Treasurer, will be appreciated so that the year book with members' names, addresses, phone numbers, and birthdates can be compiled.

Flora Koci, longtime SPJST Lodge 92 member, was the installing officer of the new officers with a theme of "angels" doing their earthly duties to insure prosperity for all our members.

Mrs. Koci completed the installation of President Marie Tesar, Vice President/Sunshine Chairman Lillie McMillen, Secretary/Reporter Martha Durham, and Treasurer Evelyn Spacek by presenting each with 'a beautiful ceramic angel as a keepsake. The Ladies Circle thanked Mrs. Koci for a beautiful and inspirational installation to mark the officers for the years 1995 and 1996.

Joyce Tesar gave the dance schedule after Mrs. Koci presented her with an angel for all the help she gives the Circle while using the hall. Joyce announced the Sunday, January 22, Goulash Dinner/Polka Dance by Henry Rejcek Band. Everyone is invited to join the SPJST Lodge 92 for this occasion that will honor the new members of the lodge.

Doors will opett at 1 p.m.. The pinning ceremony will be at 2 p.m. with the dance (goulash served during the entire afternoon) from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. The $7 admission charge for all over age 16 years will include the goulash and dance.

Aurora Maldino was thanked for the excellent job she did serving as Secretary/Reporter for the Circle for the past eight years. Her devotion to her duties will be long remembered.

Two of our members had good and bad tales to tell. Flora Koci awoke at 2 p.m. to find that her garage was missing its car and all other contents. In her fright, she misdialed the "911" number but summoned neighbors and relatives.

She does not know how, but by the time police arrived, the car had been placed in the garage, with apparent "exchanging" of all four tires. Other losses had not been determined because she had to come to be the installing officer for this meeting. Our hope is that she did not suffer more extensive damages or losses to her new car.

Rose Niesviodomy told of her gift hiding during the Christmas season.

Seems she had hid some gift money but could not find it before the holiday season. Her search proved fruitless until just this week when she found the money hidden in some linens. We know her relatives will be delighted to get the belated gifts!

January birthday honorees were Eva Dockery, Julia Dueser, Joe Gregory, Mona Hattendorf, Frank Kovar, Beulah LaBatye, Lorena Manasco, Tuna Meislohn, and Kitty Rippin.

Door prize winners were Kitty Rippin, Nancy Paprskar, and Florence Greer. Our door prizes are donated, very generously, by the members. No one tells who the donors are. No one is asked to do this.

The members voluntarily bring whatever they want. So, it is always a nice surprise to see what and how many door prizes will be given in a particular month.

The 55-cup Farberware coffee urn given by the Ladies Circle to Lodge 92 for use by the Circle and the lodge was on display. Next month's meeting will be a good time to start using the urn and savoring the goodness of a fresh cup of coffee.

With no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 11:20 p.m. for lunch followed by our usual game time and fellowship.

The next meeting will be Tuesday, February 9, 1995, at 10 a.m. at the lodge hall.

156, Caldwell Reports on January Meeting

On Tuesday, January 10, Lodge 186, Caldwell held their regular meeting. function of the lodge and described some of the lodge activities. He introduced the lodge officers as well as our sales representatives, Helen Filipp and Lorenda Baldwin.

Secretary Lorenda Baldwin then introduced all of the new members and presented each with a membership pin.

Two door prizes were won by new members, Janice Stavinoha and Brittany Sheley.

December Meeting After the Pledge of Allegiance at the regular meeting on December 7, members remained standing for a period of silence in memory of Oldrich Dvorak who passed away on December 3, 1994.

Regular business was transacted and the election of officers for 1995 was held.

Dear Members and Friends, Our January 8, 1995, meeting was called to order by President Jerry Milan.

He led us in the Pledge of Allegiance, and we remained standing for a moment of silence for our departed member, Sister Zena Alyne Keahey. May she rest in peace.

The minutes and financial report by

Secretary Mary Renfro were approved after a minor correction. Anna Johnson's treasurer's report was also approved.

Brother Milan extended a big thank you to Sister Mary (Steinman) Hargiss for the beautiful decorations for our Christmas Party.

Sister Mary reported they will have their meeting for the Youth Club on January 14. They will go bowling. She and Assistant Youth Leader Julie Pritchard plan on attending the Youth Leader's Workshop in La Grange in March.

Brother Tal Milan gave us a good report on Fraternal Acts of Service.

Sister Renfro reported on receiving congratulations from our SPJST President Brother Howard Leshikar for the Fratemalist of the Year award.

Sister Mary Jean Stopelman's granddaughter, Abbe Eaton (our member), was here for a week's visit. They left Christmas Eve morning for Chicago to join her daughter, Kelly Eaton, along with seven of her gymnasts and Coach Todd Gardner. They then left that evening for a week in Honolulu for the International Gymnastic Meet. They reported a wonderful time.

Sister Carrie Ann and husband Stephen Whitley spent the Christmas holidays with Stephen's parents and family for a week in Norfolk, Virginia. They reported a good visit.

Sister Mila Milan had her family from Canada, Jan and Vlasta Waldof, her parents and grandmother, sister and friend for two weeks. Jan was teaching our senior members for the big Slet in Canada in June.

Everyone was excited about the Dallas Cowboys doing so well.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, February 12 at 3 p.m.

Our New Year's Eve was a big success and all had a good time. We are ready for another country/western dance, which we will have on Saturday, February 18 with the "Country Junction" band.

Happy Birthday went to Brothers Talon and Rome Milan and Sister Sherri Mason with Sister Anna Johnson's famous cake.

Lodge 183, Arlington Reports on January Meeting The meeting of Lodge 183, Arlington was held Monday evening, January 9, 1995, at 7 p.m. and was called to order by President Jeanne Roznos. All officers except Second Vice President Ed Krall were in attendance. We had a guest, Tillie Roznovsky (Angeline Stiborek's mother) of West, who joined us for our meeting.

Irene Pustejovsky, Sunshine Chairwoman, was absent but passed along that she had sent a card and visited Kenneth Cepak who was in the hospital for a few days.

The minutes of the November and December meetings were read by newlyelected Secretary Helen Estada. The minutes were approved as read as were all the other reports.

Angeline Stiborek reported that our Lodge has a total of 18 new members for 1994. This will qualify us for a bronze award of $750.00 which will be awarded at the March Banquet. There was also a terminated or lapsed policy.

The Arlington Women's Shelter sent a thank y ou for the donation of canned goods we collected at the Christmas party. Tough rove sent a thank you for the charity dinner we held for their organization. Lodge 183 helped them raise around $600.00. 'nominations were held for the 1995 .,._,-)orter. I will again be reporting on w!-:at is going on at Lodge 183.

Leon Stiborek asked everyone to think 21:-out what the lodg,e needs for 1995 so that these items can he voted on and approved all at once. Some suggested items were big cookers and pots for the kitchen; double doors to separate the front foyer from the rest of the lodge for electricity purposes; and a VCR to entertain the kids.

Last year, we voted to have two family nights a month. We will be starting this in January on the second and last Fridays of the month. On the first Family Night,we are planning on having finger foods, snacks, chips and dips. On the last Friday, the lodge will furnish the meat and each family is to bring a side dish.

We are still looking for any members who wish to help with bingo. Floor, kitchen, bar or cashier worers are welcomed. Bingo is on Sundays at 1:30 p.m. and on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7 p.m.

One rainy night before Christmas, SPJST employees sang Christmas carols to the residents of S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1 in Taylor. Earlier in the evening, they were accompanied by six other employees when they sang at the Burmont Nursing Centerin Temple. Rose Huff called and although she is managing without her walker now, she said she still could not attend a meeting.

We miss her and hope she is able to join us again soon.

Pauline Novosad and Helen Sacky both called to say they were suffering from colds and thought it best to stay out of the inclement weather.

Betty Ju:',ca reported on her delivery of our donations to the women's shelter.

We were all invited to tour their new facilities. Betty also brought some very gond pictures of our December meeting for our scrapbook.

Milly Elzner took names of members interested in taking a boat trip next month. She is to check out the various excursions available locally and report to us on February 2.

Anita Regmund and Jerry Elzner each brought a cake for us to enjoy after lunch.

Travis-Williamson Counties Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society Celebrates a Vanocni Vecere The Travis-Williamson Counties Czech Heritage Society held its annual Vanocni Vccere (Christmas Dinner) on December 4, 1994, at the SPJST Party

Room in Round Rock, Texas. There were 65 members and guests who enjoyed a buffet of Czech food and fellowship.

Special guests were Dr. Helena Confortiova, Ph.D., a visiting Czech professor from Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic, and six Czech exchange students from•Charles University who are attending, the University of Texas at Austin. The Travis-Williamson Counties society members are host families to the Czech students. Other guests were Mr. and Mrs. Albert Lange, President of SPJST Lodge 187, Round Rock, and Lillian Burda, a member of Lodge 187, Round who was the SPJST host of the group.

The party room was decorated with a Christmas theme. Christmas music (both Czech and English) was played as guests were arriving.

The guests and members of the Society enjoyed an evening of fellowship, Christmas music and a buffet of Czech food consisting of a variety of Czech prepared dishes such as meats, vegetables, salads, and Czech pastries. The Christmas dinner was an introduction to the guests from the Czech Republic on how American Czechs celebrate the Christmas season and to the variety of food typically served at a Czech buffet.

The evening ended with music provided

by Sara Joe Vitek while the group sang Christmas carols in both Czech and English.

Hostesses for the Vanocni Vecere were members Dorothy Bohac, Lillian Burda, James Gerick, Virginia Gerich, Martha Tschoerner, Edwin Tschoerner, Eileen Rosipal, Vlasta Vitek, Frances Vrabel, Rita Wehring, and Gary Marek.

The Travis-Williamson Counties chapter of the Czech Heritage Society welcomes anyone interested in preserving the Czech Heritage through the many pro jects in which this Society engages in.

The Society meets on the third Wednesday of each month. For further information, call 512-346-1974.

Presently, the society is encouraging those wanting to learn the Czech language to enroll in a Czech course at ACC, Austin. The cold, gloomy weather we had the first week of January kept several of our members from attending our first meeting of the new year on January 5. There were only 19 of us and one guest, Jim Havranek. It was nice to see Jennifer Marek once more. She was still on break from college, so was able to attend.

Frances Kosarek, who is still in Houston, sent a card with her greetings to the membership. We also received a card from Diane McRae thanking us for her and the gifts she received at December meeting. She also wrote :such she and her mother, Agnes B_ rge, enjoyed our December dinnermeeting.

Polls indicate most Czechs have favorable opinions of Americans

S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1 Hosts Christmas Party The S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1 held their annual Christmas Party in December. Mr. Woody Richards, administrator, welcomed the guests and thanked them for coming. He then emceed the program.

Rev. Noble Atkins gave the Christmas devotion and Milton Bollomquiest sang a couple of Christmas songs.

This was followed by a performance by the T.H. Johnson Choir under the direction of Mary Lou Hajzak. They also sang "Here Comes Santa Claus" as Santa gave out candy canes and gifts.

The Cub Scouts No. 313, under the direction of Mrs. Betty Ann Naiyar, sang Christmas carols while the residents had their refreshments.

by Maggie Ledford Lawson Anyone waiting for a Czech backlash to the waves of American immigration had better not hold his breath.

Contrary to reports now making the rounds in foreign media, most prominently The New York Times, the thousands of Americans who have swarmed into Prague since 1989 have apparently made an excellent impression on their Czech hosts.

Americans are the most popular of the 10 nationalities that figure prominently in Prague's foreign community, according to a poll by STEM, local firm that conducts publicopinion research for private clients.

Not that everything has been perfect. Some Czech business people interviewed recounted bad experiences with American partners, and some people said they worry about the intrusiveness of American films and consumer goods. But none of the dozens of interviewees translated these experiences into general hostility toward, or even dislike of, Americans in the Czech Republic.

According to the poll, not only were Americans better liked than other nationalities, they were actually more popular than they had been a year earlier.

The survey, conducted in February, sampled 1,623 Czechs of four age groups and with varying levels of education. The responses varied slightly, but not significantly, in the different categories.

The French and the British also received extremely high ratings, while Russians and Germans were least liked by the Czechs.

A poll of Czechs conducted by the United States Information Agency last March found that 85 percent of the partic-

ipants had a favorable opinion of the United States; only Austria, with 89 perant, was regarded more positively.

American culture was viewed as a threat to Czech culture by 47 percent of respondents; 46 percent disagreed. Older Czechs were more likely to view it as a threat.

The attitude of Jana Aksmanova, who operates a flower stand near Old Town Square, an area frequented by tourists, seems typical. In the flower business for 35 years, she said she has had no bad experiences with Americans. "After 1989, some Czechs began to confuse democracy with being rude— Americans don't do that."

Arnost Adamek, manger of a magazine on Na Prikope, was similarly positive.

Americans are "teaching us things,particularly about politics, democracy and technology, Adamek said.

Prague Mayor Jan Koukal said some problems have occurred with business people from the United States who came here expecting to get rich quick. He said, however, that most people arriving today are seeking beneficial, long-term partnerships.

American attitudes toward work— aggressiveness and dynamism—are having a positive influence on Czechs, Koukal said.

Koukal estimated that 225,000 Americans are living in Prague. Officials at the U.S. Embassy put the number at 10,000. Students specializing in Central Europe, employees of multinational corporations, entrepreneurs and English teachers are well represented in the local American community.

Statewide Field Training Completed SPJST sales representatives throughout Texas have now been trained to offer the new Modterm insurance product. Regularly scheduled classes were held in 16 different locations. A number of smaller training sessions were held to accommodate sales representatives who could not attend regularly scheduled classes due to conflicts with their schedule. All totaled, some 179 sales representatives attended one of the classes.

The object of the fall classes was to introduce the new Modterm produce.

Before we market a new product, we want to be positive that our sales representatives understand the product.

Classes were conducted in New Tabor, Warrenton, Taylor, Temple, Ennis, West, Dallas, Fort Worth, Seymour and Lowake. Classes were also held in Houston, Needville, Moravia, El Campo - Hillje, Corpus Christi and Floresville.

State Field Representative Keith Gatewood conducted the classes in District One and Two. Director Andrew Vavra assisted in District One and Director Willie Kohutek assisted in District Two.

State Field Representative Jerry Kucera was assisted by State Field Manager Gene McBride and Director Sid Pokladnik in District Three.

The classes in District Five were conducted by State. Field Representative Helen Hegwood, assisted by Director Louis Hanus.

State Field Representative Jim Wiest conducted classes in District Six and District Seven, assisted by Director Matt Vanek in District Six and Robert Bayer in District Seven.

All of the sessions were conducted following a standardized lesson plan to assure that everyone received the necessary information. State Field Manager McBride did an outstanding job on preparation, planning and overseeing the classes. From the representation of classes I attended, the quality of instruction was excellent.

Appreciation is expressed to lodge officials and other sponsors for really great hospitality. We do appreciate everyone who was responsible for providing refreshments, and building set-up. Thank you for your help.

n Memoriam Resolution of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 79, Corpus Christi, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge sister, DEBBIE JEAN TEPERA. Debra Jean Tepera, age 39, passed away at 1:15 a.m. on January 5, 1995, in a Corpus Christi hospital after a lengthy battle with Huntington Disease.

She was born June 23, 1955, in Corpus Christi. She had been a resident of Mathis, Texas, for the past ten years, and a Corpus Christi resident prior to that. She attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help Elementary School and graduated from Richard King High School.

She was preceded in death by her father, Steve Tepera.

Survivors include her mother and stepfather, Peggy and Edward Janota of Mathis; one sister, Cynthia Ann Tepera of Minneapolis, Minnesota; two brothers, Major Gary Tepera of Quantico, Virginia, and James Tepera of Pearsall, Texas; three nieces, Malise Ann, Catherine, and Kristen Tepera; and three nephews, Dustin, Ryan, and Michael Steven Tepera.

Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. on Friday, January 6, 1995, at Dobile Funeral Chapel. Funeral Mass was celebrated at 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 7, 1995, at Sacred Heart Church in Mathis with Father Jose Salazar as Celebrant.

Burial followed in Taft Memorial Park in Taft, Texas.

Pallbearers were George Pesek, Jr., Marvin Pesek, Russell Pesek, Jeffery Pesek, Dennis Brezina, and Mark Tepera.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Huntington Unit at the University Good Samaritan Center, 22 27th Avenue, S.E., Minneapolis, MN 55414; or a charity of choice.

Mr. Cockrum died Saturday, December 31, 1994, in a Temple hospital.

He was born in Holland to Earl D. Cockrum, Sr., and Ruth Bell Blatherwick Cockrum. He was raised in the Holland

and Franklin areas and attended the community schools. He served as a deputy sheriff and served in the army. He completed undergraduate work at the University of Tucson and received his doctorate degree from Brigham Young University. He was the founder and publisher of the Rogers Affiliated Press. He was a member of the Masons, Elks, Shriners, American Legion, and the American Association of Radio Artists.

He was also a member of First United Methodist Church of Rogers. He was a resident of Rogers for the past 20 years and a resident of Bell County for most of his life.

Survivors are his wife, Joyce Cockrum of Rogers; four sons, Michael Cockrum of California, Patrick Cockrum of Rogers, Alton Fuller of Stafford and Paul Wilkinson of Sugar Land; six daughters, Gloria Brayshaw of Spokane, Washington, Thelma Rose of Davilla, Georgia Montoya of Omaha, Nebraska, Barbara Schultz of Modovia, Wisconsin, Donna Wilson of Harrison, Michigan, and Terri Hughes of Houston; one brother, Bob Nelson Cockrum of Penryn, California; and 17 grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Sheffield Funeral Home of Rogers was in charge of arrangements.

Burial was in Seaton Cemetery.

She was born in Caldwell to Frank W. Sefcik and Frances M. Sefcik. She moved to Temple 36 years ago from Caldwell and worked as a lab technician at the Veterans Administration hospital for many years before retiring on October 31, 1994. She was a member of Temple Brethren Church, where she was a member of the Christian Sisters and the church choir. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 47.

Survivors are her husband, Anton Motl of Temple; two daughters, Pam Pekar of Granger and Paula Howeth of Houston; one stepdaughter, Sylvia Glenn of Angleton; two sisters, Margaret Petrek of Temple and Jane Ellisor of Houston; one stepsister, Vlasta Hruska of Temple; four grandsons; and two step-grandsons.

We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 160, San Angelo, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest and sincere sympathy to the family of our departed brother,

We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge 93, Karnes, Hobson, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother, CASPER A. JANACEK, of Karnes City, Texas, who died on December 22, 1994, in San Antonio, Texas, at the age of 75 years, six months, and 22 days.

Brother Janacek was born to the late Anton and Annie Mikulenka Janacek in Lavaca County, Texas, on May 30, 1919.

He lived there and at Deweesville and Hobson in Karnes County before entering the armed forces, serving in the army corps of engineers from 1941 to 1945 in two theatres of war, helping build the Alcan Highway and then participating in the battle of the bulge. After his discharge, he came to Karnes City in 1945, married Miss Marcie Linhart, established an electrical firm and operated what may have been the first soft ice cream stand in Karnes County.

Later, he divested himself of these enterprises, accepted the Farmers Insurance Group agency in Karnes City which he managed for 26 years, and to be sure he was busy, he sold real estate, was a substitute mail carrier, city municipal judge, Christmas tree farmer, and mobile home renter amp operator, all at the same time. Despite all of these activities, he found time to enjoy a full home life with his wife and children, do some hunting and fishing, and even be active in church affairs.

Brother Janacek was a member of SPJST since 1952, KJT, Knights of Columbus fourth degree, the Chamber of Commerce, and the volunteer fire department. He also served as a board member for the Karnes City ISD. He is survived by his wife, Marcie of Karnes City; two sons, Richard A. (Shay) Janacek of League City, Texas, and Gary P. (Maxine) Janacek of Karnes City; two daughters, Janet M. (Steve) Sijansky of Corpus Christi, and Julie Janacek of San Antonio; and one sister, Josephine Severa of Schulenburg. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Amy Clare Janacek, a granddaughter, Jennifer Ross, his parents, and several brothers and sisters.

A rosary was recited in St. Cornelius Catholic Church in Karnes City on Friday evening, December 23 with a homily by Archbishop Patrick Flores of San Antonio. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Balthazar Janacek and most Rev. Bernard F. Popp, Bishop of San Antonio, assisted by eleven co-celebrants on Saturday morning, December 24, 1994. Interment followed in Karnes City Cemetery under the direction of Rhodes Funeral Home.

LADDIE FRANK BATLA, who passed away in a San Angelo nursing home on Wednesday, December 14, 1994, at the age of 74 years.

Funeral services were held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 17, 1994, at Wall Brethren Church with the Rev. Tommy Tallas, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Batla was born on June 25, 1920, in Runnels County to Lad K. Batla and Emily Barina Batla. He married Anna Marie Waller on July 16, 1940, and she preceded him in death in 1981.

Laddie served with the U.S. Army during World War II and was office and general manager for A.L. Krueger for 30 years. He farmed in the Wall area for the remainder of his life. He was an active member of the Wall Brethren Church and a member of SPJST Lodge 160.

Survivors are one son, Laddie James Batla and his wife, Olivia, of San Angelo; two daughters, Diane Baikie and her husband, Brian, of San Antonio, and Marilyn Cooper of San Angelo; one brother and sister-in-law, Delmer and Marcie Batla of St. Lawrence; one sister and brother-inlaw, Lorene and Jimmy McBride of Houston; 12 grandchildren; 14 greatgrandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and a special cousin, Ida Chlapek of Veribest.

Pallbearers were Larry Jost, John Beatty, Laddie Weston Batla, Laddie Dwain Batla, Laddie J. Batla, Jr., and Mike Batla. Honorary pallbearers were Kenneth, Larry, Garry, and Richard Batla.

Language Instruction and Tours Alief Independent School District to Offer Czech Class Alief Evening School under auspices of Alief Independent School District is again offering a conversational Czech course (elementary/advanced level) at Hastings High School. The location of this school is between Bellaire Boulevard in the south and Alief-Clodine in the north on the southwest side of the intersection of Cook Road and High Star Drive in the community of Alief.

The first lesson of this now announced twelve-week course, designed to develop basic skill in the Czech language wherever it is spoken, will be on February 1, 1995, and henceforth, once a week on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

County Junior College to Offer Czech Course Tarrant

Dear Vestnik Readers, The Tarrant County Junior College of Fort Worth, Northwest Campus, is offering a Czech beginner's conversational course. It is under the Senior Education Program. Class begins on January 30 and continues through April 10.

Orientation is January 24 at 12:30 p.m. at St. Thomas Catholic Church on 2929 Azle Avenue in Fort Worth.

Classes will be held once a week on Mondays from 11 a.m. to 11:50 a.m.

He was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas and the University of Texas in Austin. He served with the U.S. Army in Korea and during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He also served in the Texas National Guard over 30 years. He earned a 20-year award for officiating at Texas relays.

Mr. Marek's business field was insurance in Dallas and Austin. He retired in 1992, after working for the State Board of Insurance in Austin for 22 years. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 84 in

class books and dictionaries.

Community College Offers Czech Course

Austin

A conversational Czech I class is being offered at Austin Community College in Austin, Texas, beginning January 24, 1995, to March 9, 1995. The class will meet on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. at the Reagan Campus Room 443.

Anyone interested in learning Czech will be interested in taking this course.

No knowledge of the Czech language is required. Emphasis is on vocabulary and pronunciation.

Travel to the Czech Republic and study Czech with people from all over the United States. The study tour will be from July 3 to July 28, 1995. The group leaders will be Thadious Polasek of Texas and Helena Landovska of Prague, Czech Republic.

Housing and food service will be at the dorms of the Agriculture School at Suchdol in the northern part of Praha.

Instruction will be by professors of The Charles University and a linguistic institute in Praha. Along with the classes, there will be cultural excursions in Prague: tours of Dallas and of the Gethsemane Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Marek of Austin; two sons, Rev. R. Joe Marek, Jr. and wife, Kate, of Lincoln, Nebraska, and David M. 88, Houston to Offer Czech Class Lodge

Well, it took a little encouragement to get him to agree, but Mr. Bill Souchek has agreed to teach another Czech Class this year. Accordingly, Mr. Souchek's 30th Czech Class is scheduled to cornmence February 6, 1995 at 7:30 p.m. at SPJST Lodge 88, 1435 Beall Street and will consist of ten classes.

Our Czech classes have been educational, informative and fun in helping us with our knowledge and ability to speak Czech, our native language. Class attendance has been excellent. We are especially proud of those who continue to attend, even though they live in such distant places as Dayton, Sweeney and Conroe.

Class participation in the "mini" presentations in Czech has been improving.

Our students look forward to them being a part of every class. One of Mr. Souchek's conditions to teaching the 30th class was that we get the rest of the class involved in the presentations.

We recognize the sacrifices that Mr. and Mrs. Souchek make in teaching these classes and we are very grateful. We thank them and all others who help in making this class the best Czech class in Texas.

Czech culture and language classes are offered at Spring Branch Community Center on Tuesday from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Karel Sicner, noted expert in these subjects, is the instructor. Classes are ongoing and interested persons may join at any time.

This program is free and open to the public as a part of Harris County Precinct Four's Community Center located at 1721 Pech Road in Houston across from Sam Houston Hospital. Participates in Christmas Program Dear Readers, We had a great turnout for our December meeting which was followed by the lodge covered dish Christmas supper and program.

During our meeting, we made ornaments and decorated the Christmas tree.

Youth members are reminded of the deadline for submission of the t-shirt contest entries.

All the youth did an excellent job on their parts in the program. Following the program, we had a visit from Santa who brought fruit and candy bags for all.

Our meeting scheduled for January 4 was cancelled due to bad weather.

Dear Readers, The Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club had their meeting on Sunday, December 5 at 2 p.m. We had a short meeting. Our charity projects were stuffed animals, old phone books, and old Christmas cards to various organizations. We also turned our scholarship pennies in.

After the meeting, we made teddy bear garland and cotton ball snowmen ornaments. We decorated the hall and practiced for our Christmas program.

24, Cyclone Youth Club Invites You to "Youth Night Out" Lodge

Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club will sponsor "Youth Night Out" on Saturday, January 21 from 7:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. at Flag Hall in Cyclone.

The objective of "Youth Night Out" is to provide fun and entertainment in a safe haven for youth in the community.

Various types of music will be played during the evening for listening and dancing. Games, other entertainment, food, and soft drinks will be available throughout the evening.

Admission is $3.00 for ages 6 to 18 years and $1.00 for adults and children

The January 8, 1995, meeting of Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club was called to order at 2 p.m. by President Danny Baker.

Flag Bearer Scott Hudson led the Pledge of Allegiance and Club Motto.

There were 18 members present and 11 adults. Jimmy Baker was introduced as our guest.

Secretary Jennifer Ashcraft read the minutes, and they were approved. Then, Vice President Lisa Spanhel gave the Treasurer's Report.

We discussed our recent charity project, which was a canned food drive. We collected over 84 pounds of canned goods, and this was donated to Martha's Kitchen in Temple.

The new business that we discussed concerned plans for a membership drive, having a monthly youth night, and the camp t-shirt contest.

We will sponsor our first youth night on Saturday, January 21 from 7:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Food and soft drinks will be available throughout the night. There will be games and music for dancing and listening. All area youth and adults are invited.

This month's social will be a pizza party at Mr. Gatti's in Temple on February 12. The February meeting will be held there at 3 p.m. Following the meeting and social, we will go to Skate Haven at 5:15 p.m. for the District Two Skating Party.

Door prizes were won by Jarred Eixman and Ashley Veselka.

January birthday celebrants are Alison Eixman and Jason Koliha.

The January 3 meeting of Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje was called to order by Sharon Borak. Martha Bartos led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing for the Youth Club Pledge.

The treasurer collected the dues. We discussed old business which was camp t-shirts. Do not forget the design is due

by January 31.

Poems were read and door prizes were awarded. Our next month's project will be decorating a heart. After the meeting, everyone enjoyed working on puzzles.

The next meeting is February 2 in the Commercial State Bank Gold Room.

The Youth Club participated in many different areas. We brought plates to the elderly members who could not attend.

We also had a memorial service. We performed a Christmas play and served sodas to members.

Dear Members, The December meeting of Lodge 66, Waco Youth Club was called to order at Mr. Gatti's on December 11 at 5:30 p.m.

Under old business, we discussed continuing to bring cans to each monthly meeting. Remember to turn in your candy money. We brought garland for the nursing home this month. We are still collecting eye glasses. Everyone had a fun time at Holiday in the Park.

Under new business, we decided to go caroling on December 22. We have decided to give $10 to the Salvation Army, $10 to Caritas, $10 to Meals on Wheels, and $10 to Toys for Tots. We will also give $10 in memory of Arthur Langlotz and $10 in memory of Rosie Galler.

The meeting was then adjourned.

Pizza and games were enjoyed after the meeting.

88, Houston Youth lub Reports on Christmas Program Lodge

Dear Members and Readers, It was once again performance time for the Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club when they performed at the annual lodge Christmas party on Monday, December 5 at 7 p.m.

The youth started the program with the light, fun version of the "Twelve Days of Christmas". Performing in this segment were Nicholas Havemann (parts to a Mustang GT); Karen Bender (two huntin' dogs); Darren Havemann (three shotgun shells); Michael Williams (four mudgrip tires); Kristy Sokol (five flannel shirts); Amanda Godwin (six cans of Spam); Chad Barnes (seven pack of Redman); Holly Hubbard (eight table dancers); Darrell Havemann (nine years probation); Justin Miller (ten a Copenhagen); Deanna Joseph (11 wrestling tickets); and Paul Pflughaupt (12 pack of Bud).

Between skits, Darrell Havemann entertained the audience by performing several Christmas songs on his alto saxophone.

"The Cajun Night Before Christmas" was performed by Christina Joseph and Tamara Williams (little girls asking questions about Christmas); Rachel Barnes (Mama); Kristen Bender (Cajun Santa); Michael Williams (Narrator); Kimberly Joseph, Sarah Runnels, Natalie Zalesky, Lauren Godwin, Krystle Bender, Grant Janak, and Christina Janak (Sleeping Children).

At the end of the program, Santa left on his sled which was pulled by alligators while Darrell Havemann played on his saxophone, "We Wish You a Merry Christmas."

After a short intermission, the Lodge 88 Choral Group directed by Tim Kostom, led the group and youth members in singing Christmas carols. Naomi Spencer did an excellent job playing the piano and Helen Hegwood's solo was just marvelous.

Then, here came Santa Claus with his bag of gifts and fruit. There was plenty for everyone. The evening would not have been complete without the large buffet of meats, cheeses, chips, punch and desserts. There definitely was plenty for all Oh, and I must thank Mr. Willie Wehring. He is always there to assist in the audio for the program. Mr. Wehring, you have done a great job with the equipment this year.

Thank you, parents and lodge members, for attending our programs. The youth club is looking forward to entertaining you in 1995!

All Czech nouns are classified as being either masculine, feminine or neuter. If they end in a hard or neutral consonant, they are classed as masculine; if they end in "a" they are feminine, and if they end in "o", they are neuter.
