Language Instruction and Tours Alief Independent School District · to Offer Czech Class Alief Evening School under auspices of Alief Independent School District is again offering a conversational Czech course (elementary/advanced level) at Hastings High School. The location of this school is between Bellaire Boulevard in the south and Alief-CloČline in the north on the southwest side of the inter­ section of Cook Road and High Star Drive in the community of Alief.

The first lesson of this now announced twelve-week course, designed to develop basic skill in the Czech language wherev­ er it is spoken, will be on February 1, 1995, and henceforth, once a week on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

Tarrant County Junior College to Offer Czech Course Dear Vestnik Readers, The Tarrant County Junior College of Fort Worth, Northwest Campus, is offer­ ing a Czech beginner's conversational course. It is under the Senior Education Program. This is the spring 1995 pro­ gram and it begins on January 30. The class continues through April 10.

Orientation is January 24 at 12:30 p.m. at. St. Thomas Catholic Church on 2929 Azle Avenue in Fort Worth.

Classes will be held once a week on Mondays from 11 a.m. to 11:50 a.m.

Polka Dancing will also be taught the same day from 12 noon to 12:50 p.m.

All other class orientations will be held at the Northwest Campus of T.C.J.C. The Northwest Campus also has some Czech class books and dictionaries.

Orientation for other classes at T.C.J.C. will be January 26, 1995, at the Northwest Campus.

Austin Community College Offers Czech Course A conversational Czech I class is being offered at Austin Community College in Austin, Texas, beginning January 24, 1995, to March 9, 1995. The class will meet on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. at the Reagan Campus Room 443.

Anyone interested in learning Czech will be interested in taking this course.

No knowledge of the Czech language is required. Emphasis is on -ifocabularyand pronunciation.

Travel to the Czech Republic and Study Czech Travel to the Czech Republic and study Czech with people from all over the United States. The study tour will be from July 3 to July 28, 1995. The group leaders will be Thadious Polasek of Texas and Helena Landovska of Prague, Czech Republic.

Housing and food service will be at the dorms of the Agriculture School at Suchdol in the northern part of Praha.

Instruction will be by professors of The Charles University and a linguistic insti­ tute in Praha. Along with the classes, there will be cultural excursions in Prague: tours of the Prague Castle, pic­ ture galleries, the Old Town, and much more. There will also be out of town excursions to Kutná Hora, Southern Moravia, Tele, Karlovy Var, and Hradec Karlové.

Letters from the Lodges Lodge 1, Fayetteville Reports on Christmas Party With all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season and not enough time to do it all, especially going to all of the parties scheduled for this time, too, SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville, and Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce decided to hold a joint Christmas party on December 3 at the SPJST Hall.

This really worked out very well and we are happy to say we had a great tum out as both members of the lodge and chamber and their guests brought their delicious desserts and side dishes to accompany the ham and turkey, drinks, etc. which were provided by the lodge and chamber.

Santa had a great time with the chil­ dren as he gave them stuffed toys and bags of fruit and candy. Gifts were exchanged and door prizes were awarded.

Everyone had a great time. A short meet­ ing was held after the celebration.

Lodge 18, Elgin Reports on· December Meeting When we read this copy of our won­ derful paper, the Vestnik, all of the holiday rush wíll be over. Most of us will have the decorations back in storage and each day we will be trying to get rid of the leftovers in the freezer. Hope everyone had a nice holiday from members of Lodge 18.

Members of Lodge 18, Elgin met at their regular monthly meeting at 8 p.m. for the lodge business, due to a Christmas dinner which was served at 6:30 p.m.

Each family brought a dish of goodies and shared it with their brother and sister members.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Leslie Gustafson brought the meeting to order, due to the absence of President Dale Kessel. Brother Leslie welcomed 28 members and one guest. He led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. The roll of officers was then called.

FAC Gustafson called on all officers for their reports. Presenting reports.were Secretary Agnes Eschberger, Treasurer Alice Kovar, Youth Leader Ruby Bowen, and Ticket Manager Gladys Mogonye.

Brother George Liardon reported on mem­ bership. Entertainment chairperson Irene Helgren asked for help for New Year's Eve. FAC Gustafson reported on bar sales. All reports were in good standing.

Wednesday, January 4, 1995-VESTNIK/5 FAC Gustafson reported to the mem­ bers that Lodge 18 has one year and two months to work to get the note on the lodge paid off. This was good news to all. Brother Jack Eschberger stated that it is not too early to start thinking about a celebration when the time comes. The lodge has lots of members who have given their time in helping on different jobs, but all members need to get involved. · There was no old business, so FAC Gustafson called on members for new business. Brother Jim Mogonye asked for help repairing the sign to the lodge on Highway 95. "No Smoking" signs were also discussed by members who cannot handle the smoke. This was tabled for the next meeting. Secretary Agnes Eschberger read some correspondence of cards and transfers. A donation to the Scholarship Fund from Lodge 18 was given.

Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Eschberger were congratulated on their 55th wedding anniversary.

Brother Marvin Marek was the winner of the door prize which he turned back to the lodge.

Then came the time to install the new officers for 1995. Brother Jim Mogonye had the honor of installing President Dollie Hajda of Granger, Secretary Agnes Eschberger of Coupland, Treasurer Alice Kovar of Elgin, and Assistant Youth Leader Ruby Bowen of Elgin. Youth Leader Dale Kessel was absent.

Everyone enjoyed the Christmas din­ ner and meeting. Wishing each one a happy holiday, the members dismissed and went back home for the. next day's holiday rush.

Lodge 20, Granger Reports on Annual Meeting Lodge 20, Granger held their Christmas party and annual meeting on Sunday, December 4. The meeting was called to order by President Leslie Loessin.

The minutes were read by the Secretary Rubie Loessin and were approved as read.

Norma Cavanaugh reported that we have twelve new members.

The tarok tournament was held at the lodge hall on Saturday, December 3.

There were 68 players who came to play taroks. Frank Pekar reported that every­ one had a good time.

Matilda Rozacky and Helen Muyres were recognized for receiving their 50year pins.

We also had our annual 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive.

Clara and Ben Jezek, Sr. Celebrate Golden Wedding Anniversary Ben and Clara Jezek of Pilot Point celebrated their wedding anniversary on Saturday, November 19, 1994, with a mass of Thanksgiving at 3 p.m. at the St. Thomas Catholic Church.

Father Publius Xavreb performed the mass, which was followed by a reception, dinner and dance at the St. Thomas Parish Center.

About 200 friends and relatives attended from Pilot Point, Tiaga, Celina, Fort Worth, Denton, Wichita Falls, Gainsville, Lindsey, Seymour, and Pasadena.

Mr. and Mrs. Jezek were married on November 19, 1994 at 8 a.m. in the St. Thomas Catholic Church by the late Rev. Father Paul Charcut.

Ben is the son of the late Vincent and Albina (Wasek) Jezek. Clara is the daughter of the late Henry and Annie (Hitz) Simmel, Sr. Ben and Clara have two sons and two daughters-in-law, Tammy and Billy Jezek of Pilot Point and Ben, Jr. and Doilette Jezek of Tioga.

Ben and Clara have six grandchil­ dren and two great-grandchildren.

Ben Js a member of SPJST Lodge 5, Tioga. He joined the SPJST at the age

\ Mr. and Mrs. Ben Jezek, Sr. of 16 years on June 20, 1937. His two sons, Tommy and Ben, Jr., and four of his grandchildren, Stekley Marshall and Kimberly; Jennifer, and Craig Jezek, are also SPJST members.

Ben is retired from the civil service department of the Air Force. Clara is retired from Victory Equipment.

The couple lives in Pilot Point, Texas.

Lodge 39, Bryan Reports on Christmas Party Lodge 39, Bryan celebrated Christmas with a party on December 11, 1994, at the American Legion hall. We had 68 mem­ bers present and 42 visitors. A turkey dressing dinner with additional covered dishes brought by members was enjoyed by all.

On behalf of the lodge, I want to thank the Christmas Committee, Karen Minor, Ruth Langley, and Wade O'Shields, for their time and labor spent in planning the party. They did a great job for we had a beautiful party.

There were about 60 door prizes given away. The first prize went to Katherine Valenta. She won a television set.

Thanks also to everyone who brought a covered dish and to the persons who helped clean the hall room after the party.

Several persons pitched in and the tables and chairs were in place, all the trash was picked up, the tables were washed, and the floors were swept and mopped. What a great, cheerful crew! The place was "spic and span" in no time flat.

We felt very honored that he and his wife took time out of their busy holi­ day season to be with us. We hope to see them again real soon.

Lodge 81, Needville Reports on December Meeting Sixty-five members and guests attend­ ed the December 1994 meeting of Lodge 81, Needville held at the hall in Needville on Sunday, December 18.

For our noon meal, the lodge provided ham and sausage. Sister Willie Mae Kuykendall baked the ham and Sister Mary Werner brought the sausage. The sisters of the lodge, all excellent cooks, brought vegetables, salads, and desserts to complete our Christmas feast. The

kitchen committee would like to thank everyone who brought food and helped in the kitchen.

At 1 p.m., President Adolph Macha opened the business meeting. Sister Darlene Blinka led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was observed in memory of departed mem­ bers Frank Brdecka and Vincent John Newman. All officers were present.

The members were pleased to see Louis Hanus, District Five Director.

Brother Hanus is always a welcomed guest. Other guests included Mr. and Mrs. Audie Wright and their children, Caleb, Derek, Jacob and Hannah. Mr. and Mrs. Fritz Koehne were also visiting with us. It was also nice to see Kim Stamman and her son, Orin.

Vice President Vincent Norman read correspondence received from the Supreme Lodge. Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes from the November meeting which were approved as read after a minor correction. Correspondence read by Secretary Mary Werner were thank you letters from Elsie Brdecka and Louise Newman. November reports were accepted as read from Treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendall and Special Fund Chairman Gilbert Walzel.

On our sick list are Willie Miller and Rosie Schwettmann.

This will be Jeanette Newman 's last report for the year. Starting the January 1995 meeting, Sister Delores Macha will take over the reporter position. To make things flow more smoothly for Sister Macha, we will no longer print the list of door prize winners other than the winners of the door prizes donated by the lodge.

Brother Gilbert Walzel reported that Brother Edward Kuban said he would donate a 250-gallon tank for use in build­ ing a new barbeque pit for the lodge.

Brother Walzel also reported that the copying machine still was not repaired and Vice President Vincent Newman stat­ ed that he would personally bring the repairman to the lodge. During "Jingle Bells", Santa arrived. He enjoyed talking and taking pictures with both the children and those who are young at heart. Goodies that were pro­ vided by the lodge were handed out to the children by Santa. Everyone enjoyed Santa's presence and we hope to see him next year.

Our next meeting will be held on Sunday, January 15, 1995, at 12 noon at the lodge hall in Needville. Dinner will consist of fried and/or baked chicken.

President Macha said he would check into whichever kind he could get.

Joyce Pesak and Geraldine Anderson guessed the correct number of candies in containers donated by the Louis Havelkas and the Alvin Blinkas.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Homer Alexander does a great job.

Besides collecting many eye glasses, he collects clothes, etc. and distributes them to the needy. Another service he does is lining up drivers' education courses. In fact, he has one planned for February 2 and 3. He has a very capable instructor and you can save on your insurance pay­ ment by taking the course.

Congratulations to Edna Wehring for getting on the "Superstar Circle". This saleslady has really been selling the insur­ ance during the whole year, and Lodge 88 is very happy about her sales.

Entertainment Committee Chairman Viola Cox announced some mighty good dances for January. They are: January 6-Texas Brew (country/western); January 7-Central Texas Sounds (polka and variety); January 14-Sammy Jensen (big band music); January 15-Guy Lombardo Music with Al Pierson; January 21-Tony Barron (big band); and January 28--Vrazels (polka and vari­ ety). ln Memoriam In Memory of Larry Ingram, former Vestnik Publisher Lawrence "Larry" Ingram, past pub­ lisher of the Vestnik, died Monday, December 26 at his home in Temple. He was 73 years old.

He was born in Mount Moriah, Missouri to the Rev. Earl Russell and Ella Phillips Ingram. He graduated from Akeley High School in Akeley, Minnesota, and received an associate of arts degree from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. and a Get well greetings go to Anna Hoffman and Pearl Hanka with the hope that they keep on improving.

Let's all cooperate with President Clara Broz, the officers and the commit­ tees. Cooperation, loyalty and hard word can make 1995 a great year for our lodge.

Carla Williams and Allen Smith Exchange Wedding Vows Carla Denise Williams of Arlington became the bride of Allen Dwayne Smith of Fort Worth on Saturday, September 17, 1994, in Fort Worth.

The bride is the daughter of Johnny and Barbara Williams of Arlington.

The groom is the son of David and Donna Smith of Fort Worth. The bride is the granddaughter of John and Martha Huff of Arlington. The Huffs are members of Lodge 183, Arlington.

Maid of honor was Molly Reid.

Matron of honor was Kimberly Dunkin. Bridal attendants were Rebecca Williams, Tammy Shirley, Lisa Porter, Carolyn Haught, and Rachael Johnson.

Best man was Greg Haught.

Groomsmen were A.C. Henderson, Chuck Langford, Butch De Weese, xErnie Merrit, Doug Moulder, and Billy Shelton.

Special guests were from England, Ohio, Colorado, Arlington, Granger, Lago Vista, Benbrook, Austin, Taylor, Fort Worth, Grand Prairie, Olney, Wichita Falls, Bedford, and Dallas.

For their honeymoon, the couple enjoyed a cruise to the Bahamas and a trip to Disney World.

. The Family Christmas Luncheon Social hosted by Lodge 91, Crosby at Prochazka 's Port Royale Restaurant in Crosby on Saturday, December 10, 1994,

bachelor of journalism degree from the University of Texas at Austin. In 1942, he married Irene Farrell in Washington, D.C. During World War II, Mr. Ingram served in the U.S. Army Office of Strategic Services in the U.S. , North Africa and Europe.

Mr. Ingram was city editor of the Temple Daily Telegram from 1949 until 1956, when he joined the staff of the Denver Post as assistant city editor, tele­ vision columnist and editorial writer.

He returned to the Telegram as manag­ ing editor in 1961 and retired as executive editor in 1972.

In 1973, Ingram became chairman of the board and president of Stillhouse Hollow Publishers inc., the parent com­ pany of the Belton Journal, Belton Office Supply, Moody Courier, Gresham's Office Center and Graphics and Warren

Enterprises of Temple.

Stillhouse Hollow Publishers pub­ lished the Vestnik from 1980 until 1984.

In 1984, the company also printed A History of the SPJST, A Texas Chronicle 1897-1980 which was written by past SPJST President Nick A. Morris.

He was a correspondent for Time and Newsweek and was twice nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in reporting. Mr. Ingram was also honored by the Texas State Teachers Association for his editori­ al support of education.

He is survived by his wife, Irene Ingram of Temple, and two sisters, Lillian Dunham of Temple and Fem Herring of Winter Park, Colorado.

Memorials may be made to Little River - Wilson Valley Cemetery, Box 457, Little River, Texas 76554.

Kervin and Louise Jacob Celebrate Golden Wedding Anniversary Kervin "Jake" and Louise Jacob, their children, and grandchildren recent­ ly hosted a reception, dinner and dance to celebrate the couple's 50th wedding anniversary. The celebration was held in the Chandelier Ballroom of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston. Hundreds of their friends, family members, and business associates were in attendance.

Members of their wedding party in attendance were Sylvia Sanders, Kervin's sister, Maid of Honor; Ladine Schumacher, Louise's cousin, brides­ maid; and Milton Fuchs, Louise's brother, groomsman. Ushers who served at their wedding and in atten­ dance were Calvin Fuchs, John Will Fuchs, and Ruben Schulz. Mrs. Robert A. Fuchs, Louise's mother, is 102 years old and was unable to attend the cele­ bration, but she sent her best wishes from the nursing home in Brenham, Texas, where she resides.

The couple's three daughters and their husbands are Linda and Leonard Bench, Patsy and Sam Sakowitz, Jr., and Dinah and Michael Sultanik, all residing in Houston. Their grandchil­ dren are Shelly (Bench) Ullrich, Christy and Michael Bench, Tami and Lori Sakowitz, and April and Jeremy Day. After being honored with surprise presentations from their daughters and grandchildren, a turkey and dressing din­ ner was served, and music was provided

Kervin and Louise were married on December 3, 1944, at St. John's Evangelical and Reformed Church in Burton, Texas .

They are long-time Houston resi­ dents, and founders and owners of Jake's Distribution Company, a whole­ sale food and distributing company.

They have been active members of Zion Lutheran Church in the Heights for over 48 years. Both Kervin and Louise remain active in their business, and in numerous professional and com­ munity organizations, and share a great interest in the academic and athletic activities of their grandchildren.

Our annual Christmas Program/Party held jointly with Sokol, WFLA Lodge 402, and RVOS Lodge 135 was held on Sunday, December 4, 1994, at the Sokol Activity Center.

Santa was there to pass out goodies to all of the children. We had a very nice program which included songs, poems, gymnastics, and twirling.

We were saddened by the death of Ladis Novotny, husband of our lodge president, Evelyn Novotny. May he rest in peace. He was an ardent supporter of our lodge, WFlA, and Sokol. He will be missed.

We encourage members to join us at our monthly lodge meetings held the third Thursday of every month at 7 p.m., preceding the Sokol meeting.

Our next meeting will be Thursday, January 19. Election of officers will be held at that time.

Expression of Sympathy We, the members of the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts, on behalf of our membership wish to express our deepest and sincere sympathy to the family of our departed lodge sister, ANN MARIE STICKNEY, age 76, who passed away on November 21, 1994, in South Houston, Texas, after a lengthy illness.

Ann was born in Buckholts, Texas, on January 23, 1918, to the late Joe and Carolena (Ermis) Zajicek.

She was a graduate of Buckholts High School. She later moved to Houston where she lived the rest of her life.

She was a member of the South Houston Garden Club, and the Harris County Family and Community Education Club. After her retirement, she spent over ten years substituting for the PISD. She was also a member of SPJST Lodge 15 for over 50 years.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, November 23, 1994, at the Forest Park Lawndale Chapel.

Graveside services followed in the Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery.

Ann was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

Survivors include her husband, Steven Walley Stickney, Sr. of South Houston; a daughter, Suzann Joyner of South Houston; a son, Steven W. Stickney, Jr., of Pasadena; two grandchildren, Amey Lynn Joycer and Joshua Steven Anton Stickney of Pasadena; two brothers, Joe Zajicek and wife Lillie, and John Zajicek of Buckholts; two sisters, Sylvia Jernegans and husband Raymond of Temple and Marie Eunice of Chapley, Florida; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were H.D. Graf, Thad Home, Marcus Parker, Logon Gear, Joe Dean Zajicek, and John Ray Zajicek.

The family is especially grateful for the love and support of Ann's many friends.

May our lodge departed sister rest in eternal peace and may her memory live among us forever.

Ann, you will be missed by all of us.

Columbus gained another historic site on Saturday, October 22, when a marker commemorating the late Joseph V. Frnka, a former Texas legisla­ tor, was dedicated at his former residence and law office at 1035 Front Street.

Frnka, who was born in Industry, practiced law in Columbus more than 40 years, while also serving two terms in the Texas Legislature and in appoint­ ments for state and federal duties.

On the state level, he served as an Assistant State Attorney General and as chief title examiner for the Texas Land Board.

He also served as a prosecutor and judge in the U.S. Military Government in Germany after World War II. A large crowd attended the ceremo­ ny, which was opened by Doris Albright, president of the Colorado Country Historical Commission.

Dear Vestnik Readers, How is everyone? I am fine. We had a Christmas Program at our last meeting.

The youth members spelled out the words "Merry Christmas" and said what each letter meant, Then, we all joined in on Czech Christmas songs. Soon after that, Jolly '01 Saint Nick himself came in and hand­ ed out fruit and candy canes. Then, he helped distribute the presents under our tree. Everyone enjoyed their gifts.

Then;'we ate and played bingo. That about sums up our December meeting. I hope everyone has a prosperous and happy new year.

Dear Readers, On December 4, 1994, our youth club had our Christmas program and party.

Everyone brought a covered dish. All our parents, grandparents, and friends came.

After the meal, our program began.

We all participated in a skit. My little brother, Lucas, said the closing.

We drew for door prizes and my daddy won a prize.

Then, Santa came and we told him what we wanted him to bring us on Christmas Eve. We had a great day!

This month 's social was a trip to Mr. Gattí's to eat pizza on December 10.

The charity project for this month was a visit to the SPJST Nursing Home in Tayfor.

Patsy announced that the T-shirt con­ test was still going on and if anyone was interested, the deadline is January 31.

Thank you to Norma Betak for arranging the 'plans at the nursing home and Mr. Gatti's.

The meeting was adjourned at 11 :55 a.m. After the meeting, we had a gift exchange which everyone enjoyed.

The newest mem­ ber of the Lodge 172 Youth Club is Maegan Loxter­ man. She six years old and attends Will­ iams Elemen­ tary School. Her parents are T.R. and Cynthia Loxter-man.

She has one brother, Collin, who is one · year old. Her grandparents are Paul and Mary Zucha, and her great-grandmothers are Toni Zucha of Cyclone and Regína Marek of Marak.

Maegan 's hobbies are gymnastics, dancing, roller skating, and fishing. Her latest catch took the pole with him at Lake Livingston. She is also a member of the YMCA -SPJST-

První čast Dávno, dávno jil tomu, co jsem posledně se dtvala do té milé můné tváre, co jsem zultbala to bledé Uce, plné vrásků, nahitžela do modrého oka, v němž se jevilo tolik dobroty a lasky; dávno tomu, co mne posledně žehnaly staré jej( ruce! - Nent vtce dobré stařenky! Dávno již odpoč(vá v chladné· zemi!

Mně ale neumfela! -- Obraz jej( odtisknut v duši mé s veškerou svoj( barvttostt, a dokud zdráva zůstane, dotud bude v n(! -- Kdybych štětcem mistrně vládnout znala, oslavila bych tě, milá babičko, jinak; ale nástin tento, pérem kreslený nevtm, nevtm, jak se komu zaltbt!

Ty jsi ale vldy ffkala: ,,Nen( na světě člověk ten, aby se zachoval lidem všem. " Dost na tom, když se najde jen několik čtenáňl, kteff o tobě s takovou oblibou č(sti budou, s jakou já o tobě ptšu. žů

v Viktorka je sedlákova dcera ze Zernova. Rodiče její jsou už dávno pochováni, ale bratr a sestra žijou podnes. Před patnácti lety byla Viktorka děvče jako malina; daleko široko nebylo jí rovně. Svižnájako srna, pracovitá jako včelka, nikdo nemohl by si byl lepší ženy přát..

Takové děvče, a když má ještě podíl na statkuk očekávání,nezůstanepod pokličkou,to se samo sebourozumí.

Také o Viktorce šla pověst po celém okolí, a námluvníci podávali se dveře. Tatíkovia matceby se mnohý byl líbil, nejeden byl hospodář zámožný a dcera by byla přišla, jak se říká, do plného, ale ona tomu nechtěla rozumět; jen ten měl u nf dobré oko, kdo nejpěknějitancoval, a to jen při muzice.

Někdy to přece vrtalo tátovi mozkem, že dcera ženichy jen tak ledabyloodbývá,spustilna ni zhurta, aby se pro jednoho rozhodla, sice že jf sám ženichavybere a přinutí, aby si ho vzala. Děvče ale pustilo se do pláče, prosila, aby ji z domu nevyháněli,že nemázmeškáno,že jí teprv dvacet let, že neužila světa a Bůh že vf, komu se dostane a jak se jf povede.Tatíkměl děvčevelmi rád, a kdyžslyšeltakovoulamentaci,bylo mu jí líto, a vida její krásnou tvářičku myslil si: ,,Na tebe je dost času, ty ženichůještě dost najdeš."

Lidé si to ale všeckojinak vykládali; povídali si, že je Viktorka hrda, že čeká, až pro ni přijedou v kočáře, prorokovali,že pýchapředcházípád, kdo dlouho vybírá, že přebere, a podobnépranostiky.

Toho času leželi ve vsi myslivci,

jeden z nich začal chodit za Viktorkou. Šla-li do kostela, šel za nf, v kostelestál zajisté nedalekoní, a místo co měl koukat na oltář, koukal na ni. Šla-li na trávu, zajisté se vyskytnu}na blízku, zkrátka at šla kam šla, všude ji následoval jako stín. Lidé si povídalio něm, že nemá dobrý rozum, a Viktorka,kdyžvešla mezi kamarádkya stala se zmínka o něm, říkala: ,,Co ten voják za mnou chodí? Ani nemluví, jako ten morous. Já se ho bojím. Když ho na blízku cítím,jako by po mně lezlo, a z těch očí jde mi hlava kolem."

Ty oči, ty oči, každý říkal, že ty na nic dobrého neukazujou;v noci mu prý i svítily, a ty černé obočí, které nad nimi jako havraní křídla roztaženy byly a uprostřed se stýkaly, ty byly patrným znamením, že jsou to oči uhrančivé. Někteří ho litovali řkouce: ,,Můj Bože, kdo pak může za takovou chybu, když se s ní narodil. A takové oči mají moc jen na některélidi, každémuse není před nimi co bát." Nicméně sousedky, kdykolivjim na děti pohlídl, lekly se a honem běžely přetřít je bílým šatem, a kdykoliv které dítě ve vsi zastonalo, už říkaly: ,,Že je uřknut černý myslivec." Konečně uvykli lidé na tu pošmournoutvář, a mezi děvčaty ozývaly se i hlasy, že by nebyla ošklivá, kdyby přívětivější byla. Všeobecné jejich mínění ale bylo to: ,,Co s takovým podivínem.

Bůh vf, kdo a odkudje, snad ani to není člověk; skoro aby udělal před ním kříž a řekl: Pánbůh s námi a zlý pryč!

Vždyi netančí, nemluví, nezpívá; nechme ho!" I nechalyho.

Ale což to bylo všecko platno! Jim bylo lehko říci: nechmeho, když za nimi nechodil; ale Viktorka s ním měla peklo.

Už ji mrzelo vycházet, kam právě nemusela,jen aby na chvíli těch očí se zprostila, které ji všady pronásledovaly.Užji přestalamuzika těšit, protože vždy z některéhokouta v sednici pošmurný obličej na ni se díval; už nechodila tak ráda na přástvy, nebol věděla jistě, jestli nesedí ve světnici, že stojí venku u okna černý myslivec, a děvčetivázl hlas v hrdle a nit sejf trhala. Trápilo ji to. Každý pozorovalzměnu na nf, ale nikdo si nepomyslil, že by myslivec snad tím vinen byl; považovalii ho za blázna a myslilo se, že ho necháváViktorkaza sebou chodit, protože si právě jiné pomoci neví. Jednou ale povídala Viktorka kamarádkám:,,To mi věřte, děvčata, kdyby ted právě ženich pro mne přišel, at by si byl chudý nebo bohatý, pěkný nebo ošklivý, hned bych si ho vzala, jen kdyby byl přespolní." ,,Co ti to vlezlo do hlavy? Máš snad doma zlou vůli, že ses tak zbrkla a že by se ti už ani u nás nelíbilo?" ozvaly se děvčata.

,,Nemysletesi to o mně. Alejá tu nemohuvydržet, dokud tu bude ten černý voják. Vy si to nemůžete ani , pomyslit, jak mne ten člověk dotěravý trápí a zlobí. Už se ani s pokojem vyspat ani pomodlit nemohu, všude mne ty oči pronásledujou," žalovala s pláčem Viktorkaděvčatům. ,,Ale božínku, proč pak mu to nezakážeš,at za tebou nechodí?Proč mu neřekneš, že ho nemůžeš vystát, že je ti sůl v očích?" radilyjí holky. ,,Co pakjsem to neudělala?S ním jsem nemluvila; jak pak naň promluvit, když jde za mnou jako stín. Ale vzkázala jsem mu to po jeho kamarádu." ,,No, a neposlechl?" ptaly se děvčata. ,,Ba že ne; povídal tomu jistému, že mu nemánikdo co poroučet, že on si může chodit, kam chce a ke komu chce. Ostatně že mně ještě neřekl, jestli mě má rád, abych mu tedy nevzkazovala,že ho nechci!" ,,Považme nezdvořáka," durdily se holky; ,,co pak si o sobě myslí?

Měly bychomse mu pomstít za to." ,,Jen si s takovýmnic nezačínejte, mohl by vám udělat," mínily povážnější. ,,Larifari, co nám může udělat. K tomu by musel mít něco, co jsme na těle nosily, a to žádná z nás nedá a od něhotaké ničehonepřijmem,jaké pak tedy strachy? -- Jen. ty se, Viktorko, nic neboj, však my budem s tebou chodit a jednou toho čerta přece vyplatíme," křičely smělejší z děvčat.

Ale Viktorka bázlivě kolem sebe se ohlížela a nepotěšena jejich domluvou vzdychla si: ,,Kdyby mi jen Pánbůh s toho kříže pomohl."

To, co Viktorkaděvčatůmsvěřila, nezůstalo tajemstvím, rozneslo se dost brzy až přes pole do druhé vsi.

Za několik dní octnul se jakýs úslužný člověk ze sousední vsi ve dvoře Viktorčina otce. Mluvilo se o tom a onom, sem a tam, až vylezl s barvou ven, že by totiž soused syna svého rád oženil a ten syn že by rád Viktorku, že ho poprosili za starosvata,abyjim vyjednal,zdali by směli přijít námluvydržet nebo ne. ,,Sečkejte chvilku, já se zeptám Viktory; ona at vám řekne. Co se mne týče, já znám Šímu i syna jeho Tondu a nemámnic proti tomu, mají · pořádnou živnost,'' řekl starý námluvčfmua šel zavolat dceru do komory, aby se s nf poradil.

Jak to Viktorkaslyšela,bezevšeho rozmyšlovánířekla: ,,At přijdou!"

Otci se to zdálo divné, že se tak najednou rozhodla, ptal se jí, jestli Toníka zná, aby je darmo neondala; ale Viktorkazůstalapři svém slovu a řekla ještě otci, že ona Toníka Šímovic dobře zná, že je hodný hoch. ,,Já mám radost z toho," řekl

otec, ,,ostatně jak sis udělala, tak máš. S Pánembohem tedy, at přijdou."

Kdyžotecšel, by starosvataodbyl, přišla matka k Viktorce do komory, dělalají křížek a přála štěstí. ,,Co mne při tom nejvíc těší, že nepřijdeš ke tchyrii ani k švakrové, že budeš sama hospodyně," dodala. ,,I mamičko,já bych si ho vzala, kdyby měl dvě tchyně," odpověděla Viktorka. ,,Inu, to je tím lépe, když se máte tak rádi." ,,I to ne, mamičko, já bych i jinému hodnému hochu byla slovo dala." ,,Prosím tě, co to mluvíš,vždyi se jich dost hlásilo a žádného jsi nechtěla." ,,Tenkráte nechodilza mnouještě ten voják s těma zlýma očima," šeptalaViktorka. ,,Tyt nemášvšechpět pohromadě, co to mluvíš o vojáku, co je ti do něho, at si chodí kde chce, nech ho, ten tě přece nevyženez domu?"
