"100 Pennies" drive nearing $7,000 mark

100 Pennies Scholarship Drive

Through December 15, the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive had collected a total of $6,982.50—enough for 14 additional SPJST scholarships. The drive will continue through December 31. From the Vice President Home Office Site of Second Master Sales Class II

Sue Jaramillo Data Entry Operator Financial Secretary's Department Eight Years

In her position as a data entry operator, Sister Jaramillo is responsible for a range of data entry and computer back-up procedures, including the maintenance of financial and accounting files and updating member files.

She is also responsible for transcribing and doublechecking information on the Financial Secretary's quarterly and annual reports.

In addition, Sue enters data necessary to complete various Internal Revenue Service reporting requirements.

She is also routinely responsible for printing address labels for the Vestnik and performs an assortment of clerical duties.

Sue is a graduate of Academy High School. She also attended Temple Junior college where she took classes in accounting and computer programming.

Before coming to SPJST, she worked at Texas Instruments as an electronics assembler and at the Chupik Corporation as a data entry clerk.

"As much as anything, accuracy is important in the work that I do," Sue says. "With the high volume of data that comes through, time management also becomes important.

"Because of the many reporting requirements, December and January are two of the busiest months of the year," she notes.

In addition to doing a good job on her assigned tasks, Sue values the opportunity that she has had to make lasting friendships while working at the Home Office.

"It makes the day more pleasant when you find someone whose company you can enjoy," she says.

Sue and her husband, Richard, have one son, Rustin.

They are members of Lodge 47, Seaton.

"Our little boy is the joy of our life," Sue beams. Her hobbies include working out in the yard, crochet, needlepoint and cross stitch, and all types of sewing.

She and her family are also members of Taylor's Valley Baptist Church.

One of Sue's most memorable moments working at the Home Office came last year when she was accompanied to the SPJST Flag Day Ceremony by her son, Rustin. A Temple Daily Telegram photographer liked what he saw and took a picture of them. The photo made the front page of the next day's paper. "That was nice," Sue recalls.

Letters from the Lodges Lodge 6, Cottonwood Reports on Christmas Party Merry Christmas, Members and Friends! With the holiday season upon us, we at Lodge 6, Cottonwood hope everyone will have a joyous and healthy season.

We held our Christmas and ThankYou Party on Sunday, December 4. We had a wonderful turnout. We hope everyone enjoyed themselves. I want to especially thank those who came out to decorate the lodge. It was really festive.

Also, there is a big thank-you to those who baked the turkeys on Saturday and then those who came to cook the rest of the food on Sunday. It takes a lot of work to prepare the food and then clean-up.

We want to thank the Vestnik editor, Brother Brian Vanicek, his lovely wife, their beautiful daughter and little baby son for their visit with us at the party.

Lodge 15, Buckholts met on December 12 at 6 p.m. with President Gladys Allison presiding.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and a moment of silence was observed for our departed members.

er's report was given and both were approved. All committee reports were given and approved.

We would like to extend our sympathy to the Joe and John Zajicek families on the loss of their sister, Ann Stickney.

On our sick list, is Eddie Kohutek.

Eddie had an accident with a horse causing severe damage to his hand.

We are very proud to be able to have a representative of our lodge in the Fraternalist of the Year contest. Mr. Joe Zajicek fits the bill for us.

We are also very proud of our insurance representatives, Jeannette Glaser and Michael Hughes. They are really working hard for us.

We will be renewing our contract with the Cameron Dance Club.

Lodge 24, Cyclone Elects 1995 Officers at December Meeting Dear Readers, Lodge members met on Monday, December 12 at 7 p.m. for their monthly meeting. The meeting was called to order

by President Carol Chervenka.

Secretary Arleen Mayeux read the minutes of the November meeting. The minutes were approved as read. The only correspondence which had been received was a holiday greeting from District Two Director Willie Kohutek and his wife, Adeline.

The names of four new candidates for membership in Lodge 24 were announced. They were Shelly R. Gerich, Ashley N. Nejtek, Carla A. Valenta and Thomas W. Valenta. All were approved for membership. Welcome to Lodge 24.

Standing committee reports for the bar and ticket sales were delivered by Bernice Sebek. Youth Leader Melanie Zavodny also reported on several activities that our younger members have been involved in recently. Congratulations to the youth club on placing sixth in the Temple Christmas parade. That's great for a first effort—especially when you consider that there were more than 100 entries in the parade.

Under old business, members heard reports on the recent Casino Night held at Flag Hall. Committee Chairman Bobby Hoelscher expressed thanks to all members and area merchants who had worked to make the evening a success.

The Lodge 24 Christmas party and member appreciation dinner held on December 11, was also discussed.

President Chervenka thanked all of the members v, ho contributed to the event.

Thanks were also expressed to Herman and Arleen Mayeux and Jerry Cabla for their role in preparing the turkeys and to Youth Leader Melanie Zavodny for the vely youth program.

Family and Friends Gather to Honor Marie Trlica on Her 90th Birthday On Saturday, November 26, 1994, Mrs. Marie Trlica was honored with a beautiful birthday celebration. Marie, who became 90 years young on November 24, looked radiant as she greeted each guest personally. She wore a simple long-sleeved, wine-colored dress, accessorized by a double strand pearl necklace and a lovely multi-colored corsage.

Above the dining room doorway hung a large bright pink banner which read, "Happy Birthday, Marie". The dining table, layered with lace over a pale aqua tablecloth, held a large white frosted cake decorated with pink and purple sugar roses and green leaves. It was inscribed with "Happy 90th Birthday".

Two lovely fresh flower arrangments, each centered with a white candle, graced both ends of the table.

Refreshments included beautifully arranged fruit and vegetbale trays with dips, two varieties of cheese balls with fancy crackers, nuts, and mints, red fruit punch, coffee served from a silver ser-

vice and slices of the delicious birthday cake.

Thirty-five relatives and friends from across Texas came to wish Marie their best regards. The party was hosted at her home in Smithville by her children, Bill and Marilyn Trlica of Angleton (and Marvin and Lillian Trlica in Spokane, Washington); her granddaughters, Merrilee Zadan of Houston and Ramona Tschaar of Angleton; and her great-grandchildren, George William Zedan of Houston and Monica Marie Gamer of Angleton.

Marie has another granddaughter, Diana Khajair, and two more greatgranddaughters, Yasmin and Maryann of Seattle, Washington. These, and many other relatives and friends sent their greetings by way of birthday cards and wired flowers, all of which helped to make a beautiful day for Marie to remember.

Lodge 35, Elk Reports on December Meeting Our regular monthly meeting was called to order at 3:20 p.m. by President Henry Breitkreutz.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by youth members, R.D. Easter and Christopher Pavelka.

Our guests acknowledged were Sid Pokladnik and Judd May. Secretary Virlene Kelly read the November minutes and they were approved. She read correspondence concerning our ad valorem tax.

Treasurer Nancy Mulner's report was approved as read.

Youth Leader Barbara Pavelka report ed on the Youth Club's November activities. She also reported that they were going to give away the quilt and manger scene at the January meeting.

Those having birthdays in December are Charles Pavelka, Nancy Milner and guest Hubby Frazier. All sang Happy Birthday to them.

The adult door prize was won by Waylon Callaway. The youth door prize was won by Michael Necessary.

Special prizes were donated by Sid Pokladnik. They were two SPJST writing pens, won by Vernon Wood, Jr. and Johnny Stuckly, and an SPJST clock, won by "lucky" Virlene Kelly, who had stated before the drawing that she would just love to win it.

Then Brother Sid Pokladnik installed the 1995 officers.

The meeting was then adjourned. A great roast beef supper was enjoyed by all. Thanks to the ladies who prepared all of the food.

Lodge 88, Houston Lodge 74, Lovelady to Offer Driving Reports on December Meeting Classes Again in 1995 Dear Members and Guests, The Lodge 74, Lovelady meeting was held Sunday, December 4 at 5:30 p.m.

Attendance was small once again. I hope we have more people attend in the future. Due to the attendance, it was decided that business meetings will be every three months. Our next business meeting will take place on Sunday, April 2 at 5:30 p.m.

President Win Bradshaw's report was good on the progress of the lodge and the financial report. All of the game equipment is now paid for. That credit goes mainly to Mr. Bradshaw and his wife Joyce Bradshaw. Also, Ralph Smith and his wife, Hazel Smith, are really working hard for the lodge. All of you should come and see all the work they have done or are doing.

Most all of the game nights throughout December will be skipped until January 6, 1995. We will again have games each Thursday and Saturday except when they might conflict with a Saturday night dance. The games begin at 7 p.m.

The Perfect Strangers Band will entertain our dancing fans on New Year's Eve. The dance starts at 9 p.m. and doors open at 8 p.m.

As in the past years, AARP Defensive Driving will be offered to persons ages 50 years or older. The course will be offered to both SPJST members and non-members.

Completion certificates issued at the end of class may be sent to your auto insurance agent for a reduction in your auto insurance premium.

This course, however, cannot be used for traffic violations of any kind toward insurance premium reduction.

To register for this first class of 1995 scheduled February 2-3, call Fraternal Activities Coordinator Homer Alexander at (713) 681-3304. Class time is 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Both days attendance is required.

88, Houston Czech Class Completes 28th Course Lodge

Another successful term of Czech study was completed on May 5 at Lodge 88, Houston.

Sixty-one members were in attendance. Among these were eight from the

Lodge 155, Austin Hosts Christmas Banquet The members of Lodge 155, Austin held a festive Christmas Banquet on December 4 at Steak and Ale Restaurant in Austin. The lodge took advantage of the occasion to pay tribute to two retiring officers, Raymond and Alice Prasatik.

Raymond Prasatik continuously served the lodge in positions of financial secretary since the chartering of Lodge 155 in 1935. His service spans a period of 59 years. Alice Prasatik served the lodge in various positions for over 40 years. The lodge members paid tribute to. Brother and Sister Prasatik and presented them with a gift as a token of appreciation.

Brother Prasatik is a retired Austin banker who was very active in civic affairs and the SPJST. At one time, he aught banking courses at the

University of Texas in Austin. The members of Lodge 155 were pleased to have present Brother and Sister Prasatik's daughter, Virginia Prasatik of Houston.

8/VESTNIK—Wednesday, December 21, 1994 Czech Republic, one high school exchange student studying at Wharton, three couples from Hajov and the Czech instructor at Pasadena.

The short study session was followed by the singers from Moravia, and the class participated in singing melodies of olden days. An invitation was expressed to all who might desire to visit the " Stara Vlast" and, in particular, their individual homes.

It goes without saying, the class has already planted the proverbial seeds of "When does the twenty-ninth course begin?" The answer to that is: "It is in the laps of the gods." Who knows?

Good wishes were read from Sister Maria Prill and she plans to be back Mother's Day. After the meeting, Sister Renfro and myself were invited to a family dinner in the home of Brother C.L. and Sister Pattie Gage in Decateur. Then Pattie led a string of cars on tour of Decateur's beautiful Christmas decorations and that was something to see. Heard it was on television last year.. This was a beautiful night.

Our next meeting will be January 8 at 3 p.m.

The youth were busy collecting pennies for the Scholarship Fund.

Lodge Lodge 156, Baytown held their quarterly meeting and Christmas social at Gaily Restaurant on December 9 at 7 p.m. We had a nice turn out of members and a good time was had by all.

Lodge 160, San Angela Reports on Annual Meeting The annual dinner and meeting of Lodge 160, San Angelo was held on Sunday, December 11, 1994, at St. Ambrose Catholic Hall in Wall.

All enjoyed a delicious noon meal catered by Southern Seas. Following the meal, the meeting was called to order by President Leonard Jansa.

The Youth Club presented the program consisting of two skits, "Twos the Night Before Christmas in Texas" and the skit they presented at the Fraternal Congress.

The minutes were read and approved, followed by the treasurer's report.

Guests recognized were Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas and his wife, Betty; Robert Anderson, who has been teaching our Czech class; and Stanley Broz, District Four Director.

A memorial service was held in memory of our members who passed away since our last annual meeting.

This year, our local lodge presented three scholarships to local members.

This year's winners were Rondi Michalik, Chad Box, and Bridgett Schwartz.

Worth Ladies Circle Reports on December Meeting Fort

The Ladies Circle meeting opened with the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag, followed by a moment of silence for all the deceased member and their families.

Members then joined in singing "Let There Be Peace on Earth".

A motion was made, seconded and approved to dispense with the minutes of the last two meetings. The treasurer's report was read and approved.

Guests Kay Robbins and Vivian Steffgen were welcomed. Ladies, we hope you will join us again next year.

Thank-you notes from the Zich families and from Lodge 92 for the $300.00 donation were read. Also, a letter from Vestnik Editor Brian Vanicek expressing thanks for the sympathy card on the death of his father and the congratulations on the birth of his son, Samuel, was read.

New Business A suggestion was made that we purchase a coffee pot for the Circle and lodge meetings. The motion was approved. Also, a new handbook will be printed for 1995-96. Martha Durham will handle that project and asked that information be correct before printing.

Jo Prochaska, hostess chairman, announced the January hostesses will be Louise Oujesky, Merel Kovar and Clara Marchioni.

Treasurer Evelyn Spacek reported a $25.00 donation was sent to the Taylor Rest Home for Christmas. Also, a gift was given to Marie Tesar for her service as president.

James Greer was the narrator for the Mr. and Mrs. Right's Christmas exchange of gifts. Lots of fun and surprises.

The meeting adjourned with 45 ladies and eight men present to enjoy the good food and fellowship.

This will be my last letter to the Vestnik after four years of reporting. It has been a pleasure and privilege.

Martha Durham will be taking up this duty. As busy and capable as she is, she always seems to make time for other things. My thanks to her.

Community College Offers Conversational Czech Alvin

Intermediate Conversational Czech will be offered by the Continuing Education Department of Alvin Community College on Tuesday nights, 7:00-9:00, from February 7 to April 18.

The class will meet at Alvin Community College.

Students of Czech descent as well as any interested persons are welcome to register for this non-credit course.

Conversational Czech has been taught at ACC since 1973. Czech language instruction fosters awareness and understanding of cultural pluralism in Texas.

To further this understanding, the class will also learn Czech geography, culture, arts and food. The history and contributions of Czechs in Texas will also be presented.

Czech Heritage Singers and Dancers of Houston Perform at S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home On November 16, the Czech Heritage Singers and Dancers of Houston performed for residents of the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 2 in Needville.

The group has performed at the Kolache Festival in Caldwell, the Seaman's Center in Houston, KJZT in Hallettsville and many church bazaars and nursing

homes.

The group enjoyed their annual Christmas party on December 3 which included a memorial for one of the founding members, Bishop John L. Morkovsky. Father Ben Smaistrla celebrated mass for the occasion.

A thank you from Tria Molberg who received a book for speaking at our last meeting, was read. Henrietta Klecka told of an exchange of doctors coming from the Czech Republic to observe and learn new techniques at local hospitals which they will use when they return home. She has asked us to consider donations for travel expenses, medical equipment, or host families, while they are visiting. Anyone interested can contact Rudy Klecka in East Bernard.

B.J. Sablatura presented a delightful program, "An Old Fashioned Czech Christmas."

Copies of a Texas Czech Heritage Calendar for 1995 were prepared by Ken Walla and given to members.

The First International Polka Festival will be May 13, 1995, at Fiesta, Texas in San Antonio. Buses will be running from our county. If anyone is interested in riding along, please contact B.J. or Barbara Sablatura.

Joeann and Jerry Fabrygel are planning a tour of the Czech Republic from July 10 to August 2. Please contact them if you are interested.

Booths of Czech music, crafts, jewelry, etc. were provided by Henrietta Klecka and the East Bernard Czech Singers.

County Czech Heritage Society Reports on Christmas Meeting Wharton

The Christmas meeting of the Wharton County Czech Heritage Society was held at the First Christian Church in El Campo with more than 80 persons in attendance.

Secretary Annie Hobizal read the minutes of the last meeting and Treasurer Jeraldine Socha presented the financial report.

Our Czech Heritage Chapter will host the State Heritage Meeting on Saturday, March 4, 1995. Planning committees headed by Daniel Marek and Ethel Meek will finalize preparation for the hall and food. Please plan on bringing a dessert.

A book, Village of Origin, by Edmond Hejl will be donated to the El Campo Library for use throughout the county.

Praise and thanks was given to the outgoing officers and well wishes for the new incoming officers as they were introduced.

Mr. Schiller was born in Bell County to Joe and Francis Pomykal Schiller. He married Lois Machelicek, who preceded him in death in 1966. He then married Millie Luksa Marchak. He worked as a carpenter before retiring from Scott and White Memorial Hospital. He was a member of Ocker Brethren Church, SPJST Lodge 87, and RVOS. Survivors are his wife, Millie Schiller of Temple; three daughters, Georgia Pyeatt of Austin, Lanette Ranly of Westphalia and Joan Junek of Temple; one stepson, Edward Marchak of Refugio; one stepdaughter, Lanelle Lesikar of Rogers; one brother, Alden Schiller of Temple; two sisters, Lydia Coufal and Annie Mikeska, both of Temple; 12 grandchildren; and two greatgrandchildren.

Sister Maurine and her husband, George, were very active in lodge work before they moved to Dallas She was a member of the Herring Avenue Methodist Church, RVOS Lodge 189, and SPJST Lodge 66, Waco since March 1970.

Sister Maurine worked for J.M. Wood and V.R. Fashion Manufacturing for many years. Her husband George died in January 1992.

Sister Trefny is survived by one son, George Henry Trefny of Farmers Branch; one sister, Leona Fielder of Moulton; two brothers, Walter Fritz Gable and Richard Lee Gabler of Schulenburg; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Mr. Heller was born to Alton Parker Heller and Mabel Cleo Witcher. He married Arlene Kurecka on June 2, 1956, in Cyclone. He worked for the Santa Fe Railroad for 36 years and was a trustee for the Academy School District for nine years. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the U.T.U. and SPJST Lodge 177, Academy.

Survivors are his wife, Arlene Heller of Heidenheimer; a son, Ronnie A. Heller of Taylor; three daughters, Sandra McDow of San Antonio, Linda Heller of San Marcos, and Paula Heller of Dallas; two brothers, Jimmy Heller of Hutto and Donald Heller of Temple; four sisters, Betty Wilson and Ruby Wooley, both of Belton, Patsy Bunte of Holland, and Glenda Cedotal of Kentucky; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Friday, December 2, 1994, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Temple with Monsignor Arthur Michalka and the Rev. Charles Davis officiating.

On November 18, 1935, she was married to Gilbert Krause.

She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Industry, the IC Altar Society, and SPJST Lodge 201, Bleiblerville-Nelsonville.

Funeral services from the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Industry were held on October 24, 1994.

Internment was in the church cemetery officiated by Father Roger Duffy.

Survivors are her daughter and son-inlaw, Earline and Burney Boecker of Bleiblerville; two granddaughters; and two sisters.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, .and two sisters.

Sister Rosie was a custodian at Texas State Technical College for many years and had been retired from that position.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bel'mead, the Catholic Daughters Association, and SPJST since October 1960. She was an active and hard-working SPJST member and was very interested in the youth programs.

Sister Rosie is survived by her husband, Weldon Galler of Bellmead; one daughter, Debra Wallace of Hallburg; two sons, Thomas Galler of Bellmead and Michael Galler of Robinson; two sisters, Mary Vasicek and Stacy Ach of Temple; one brother, Edward Mihatsch of Temple; and four grandchildren.

On October 4, 1947, she was married to Joseph B. Sisa in the Nelsonville Brethren Church. She lived and worked in Houston. She was a member of the Houston Brethren Church and the Christian Sisters and SPJST Lodge 201, Bleiblerville-Nelsonville.

The funeral services were held on November 17, 1994, from the Knesek Brothers/Edinger Funeral Chapel of Bellville with Rev. William J. Hodge officiating. Internment was in the National Cemetery of Nelsonville.

Survivors include her husband, Joseph B. Sisa of Houston; one son and daughter-in-law, Billie Wayne and Sandra Sisa of Nelsonville; one granddaughter, Carrie Jo Sisa, and two brothers.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Mr. Barborak was born November 29, 1911, in Moulton, to the late John and Frances Jurica Barborak. His occupation was farming. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Moulton, SPJST Lodge 23, Moravia, and a former member of Lavaca County A.S.C.S. Survivors are a daughter, Vivian A. Kalich of Moulton; four sons, Arthur F. Barborak of AlVin, Franklin P. Barborak, and Dennis B. Barborak, both of Austin, and James D. Barborak of Greensboro, North Carolina; two sisters, Bessie Janah and Rosie Konvicha of Moravia; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Mr. Barborak was preceded in death by his wife, Clotilda Motal Barborak, his parents, John and Frances Barborak, one son, and three brothers.

She loved to dance and enjoyed gardening.

Sister Regina is survived by her husband of 53 years, Willie Adamcik; two daughters, Jeanette Snapka and Joyce Dulock of West; one brother, Henry Jacek of San Antonio; two sisters, Lillie Mae Nors of Penelope and Dorothy Hutyra of West; nine grandchildren, and one greatgrandson.

Burleson County Constable Dennis Gaas spoke to the Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club at the November meeting held at the constable and judge's office. Constable Gaas demonstrated how to protect yourself, how the office

operates and told of some of his past experiences. It was very informative and enjoyed by all of the young people, visitors and parents who attended.

Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club participated in the annual Temple Christmas Parade on Monday, December 5, 1994.

Our club, entered a float which many of our members built and decorated for this event. We all were very excited to have won sixth place on our float!

Several members rode on the float.

Our King Danny Baker, Duke Scott Hudson, Queen Tammy Baker, and Duchess Ashley Veselka represented Lodge 24 and District Two in the parade.

Youth Leader Melanie Zavodny also rode our float representing Miss Texas-Czech.

After the parade, all youth were treated to delicious snacks at the SPJST Home Office. Santa was also there giving out special treats. Carriage rides were also provided and we all had fun.

After the meeting, we all enjoyed trading gifts, talking, and practicing for the December social. The next meeting is January 3 at 7 p.m. in the Commercial State Bank Gold Room.

Lodge 66, Waco Youth Club Reports on District Three Christmas Party Dear Readers, District Three recently held our Christmas Party on December 2 and December 3. The party was a lock-in at Lodge 84, Dallas.

After getting lost, we finally got there and we really had a blast! We had a great DJ come at 12 midnight and we danced until we could not dance anymore! After dancing, we played a round of cops and robbers. We finally got everyone settled down and in bed at 5 a.m.

The next day, we went to the parade and then to the Six Flags Malls until Six Flags opened at 4 p.m. Six Flags was great and really pretty. It put me in the Christmas spirit. I really had a fun time.

I hope everyone else enjoyed it as much as I did. I would also like to thank Lodge 84 for having the lock-in and providing

Night Before Christmas on the !Enterprise

My daughter , Belinda, wrote this poem from 'Twas the Night Before Christmas last year. It was published in the Lufkin newspaper during the holiday season.

Belinda has cerebral palsy and is a very big fan of Star Trek. In her own little world, she has travelled throughout the universe. I thought that it would be nice to share:our joy with all Vestnik readers at Christmas time .. .

'Twas the night before Christmas aboard the Enterprise, But no mice were detected by her powerful sensor eyes.

Her bridge was bedecked with lights and garlands galore, For Saint Nick had never been on a starship before.

Her crew had retired to quarters for a long nap, With Dr. Crusher in her kerchief and the Captain in his cap.

The gruff Klingon officer Worf made it clear That Saint Nick would be content to bring cheer.

Little Alexander was fast asleep in his bed Though sad memories of his mother were projected in his head.

Data and Geordi also bedecked engineering So the personnel would find their duties more endearing.

The observation lounge was aglow with its tree, And the table and chairs were lighted so brilliantly.

Ten-Forward also had a tree of its own, And Commander Riker would play those carols on his trombone.

Suddenly, the Captain awoke to some strange clatter, And sprang from his bed to see what was the matter.

Through the window he saw a shuttlecraft That carried Saint Nick and his elves, fore aft.

The jolly old elf was prepared for docking.

The ship's Shuttle Bay door opened, although slightly rocking.

Mr. Worf and his officers saw Nick come aboard With a shipment of toys, including tiny soldiers, each with a sword.

They led him to Ten-Forward so he could do his work, And while working he hoped the Captain wouldn't go berserk.

He wore a maroon Starfleet uniform instead of his red suit, And his rank was that of Admiral, a rank so absolute.

He continued his work but then took a slight pause And introduced to Worf that he was Admiral Santa Claus.

The Klingon was surprised to see this high official eye to eye, And soon showed him to his guest quarters with a brief sigh.

There he'd make many decisions about what the crew might expect, Even his quarters were already fully and beautiful bedecked.

It was now Christmas morning aboard the Enterprise.

And the crew member knew just what they'd realize That Christmas is a time for giving and sharing, And friendship and co-operation that will always mean caring.

The Captain escorted Nick to Transporter Room Three And assured him the ship's children would be full of glee.

As he prepared to energize he said with a loud shout, 'Merry Christmas to you and your crew and the entire Federation— Claus Out!" —SPJST-

SPJST Scholarship Applications Will Be Accepted Through December 31 1995

The time is now for seniors and undergraduates to apply for SPJST scholarships for the 1995 academic year.

Scholarship applications will be accepted through December 31.

Funded by the SPJST and voluntary contributions, the Scholarship Program is administered by the SPJST Supreme Lodge as an investment in our young people. To be eligible to apply for an SPJST scholarship, one must have an active SPJST insurance certificate in force for at least one year at the time of application. The applicant must hold an active SPJST insurance certificate for the duration of the scholarship.

To receive their scholarship, winners are required to attend a college that offers programs leading to a bachelor's degree in the United States of America, accredited by a recognized accrediting body.

Students applying for a technical scholarship must plan to enroll in a technical program of 18 or more months.

The 28th Czech language class of Lodge 88, Houston is almost over for the current term. Mr. Bill Sochek, the teacher, has a most successful record having taught the whole time except one term when ill. His seemingly inexhaustible repertoire of poems, stories, sayings, songs, vignettes, etc. add innovation and enjoyment to learning. (After all, aren't these the hallmark of a good teacher?)

Additionally his students are asked to contribute presentations of their own creativity. Such is the case at almost every meeting where one or two are encouraged to demonstrate their own abilities. These items were taken from a Czech class textbook (Prvni Citanka by Adolf Frumar) loaned by Ellas Orsak of Snook who even though raised in a Czech home surrounded by a largely Czech community was enrolled by her parents Josef and Frances Sumsal into a class to learn to write and speak Czech correctly. At the time, about 75 years ago, she was a young girl. This is much as we do with our children who are raised with English but taught formally so that they may write and speak English properly.

Another Czech language course in Alief is now a history The 30th Czech class at Alief was successfully completed on 9th November 1994. The students of this class, and all of the previous classes at Alief, again whole-heartedly supported the intensive teaching of Czech Grammar and the vocabulary as the most necessary ingredients for proper Czech conversations.

Although the above statement "without grammar and without a vocabulary one cannot put correctly a simple Czech sentence together" is in conflict with some so called conversational Czech classes elsewhere, the grammar point of view is enthusiastically shared by all who really want to learn the Czech language seriously.

Our Alief class is not a social gettogether club, but is a serious place to learn the Czech language, to perpetuate our heritage.

Students of Czech at Alief do review the classwark at home and memorize vocabulary and grammar.
