Uncorrected Minutes of the November 7 - 8, 1994 Regular Meeting of the Supreme Lodge SPJST held at the Home Office in Temple,Texas Chairman of the Board, Cyrill Pokladnik, called the meeting to order at 8:30 a.m. with the following Supreme Lodge Members present: Howard B. Leshikar, Pres.

Leonard D. Mikeska, Vice President Lanita Anglin, Secretary-Treasurer Jerry Mikulas, Financial Sec. Sidney Kacir, Legal Advisor Andrew Vavra-I Willie E. Kohutek-II

Cyrill Pokladnik-III, Chairman of the Board Stanley Broz-IV Louis Hanus-V Matt S. Vanek-VI, Vice Chairman of the Board Robert Bayer-VII

MINUTES - On the second page of the minutes, paragraph six, Director Vavra abstained instead of voting against the motion. Director Hanus commented that the reason that he abstained on the motion concerning the new communication assistant was due to the fact that he had not received the resumes in time to feel qualified to vote.

Director Vavra questioned President Leshikar as to why the Board was not allowed to interview all of the communication assistant applicants. President Leshikar replied that the resumes were available at the Home Office for any one who wanted to see them.

Chairman Pokladnik made the recommendation that if forty or fifty resumes were submitted for a new position and the officers are in the agreement on five or six applicants, allow the Board to interview the five or six applicants.

On page 8, change the meeting starting time from 9:00a.m. to 10:00a.m. Vice President Mikeska made the motion to accept the minutes with changes, seconded by Director Vavra. Motion carried unanimously.

OFFICERS REPORTS - The officers' reports were acknowledged to be placed on record in Exhibit Volume 15 on motion by Director Bayer. The motion carried unanimously.

STATE YOUTH DIRECTOR'S REPORT - President Leshikar explained that for a youth to appear at the youth spectacular portion of the Texas Fraternal Congress, the youth has to place as one of the top three in their category at the YAD. It was reported that our Society probably has the largest variety and best variety at the youth spectacular. Director Broz reported the Society in charge of TFC this year had not provided enough chairs at the Youth Spectacular, he requested that next year when Vice President Mikeska is in charge of TFC's arrangements to make sure enough seating is available.

It was decided to try a dance pilot program with one lodge from each district.

President Leshikar thinks this new dance program will be a supplement to the Youth Program. It is hoped the dance program will provide new members for potential insurance sales. President Leshikar explained that in other Societies the local lodges do everything such as costumes, scheduling classes, etc. and the Home Office reimbursing the cost of a qualified instructor. Legal Advisor Kacir brought up the possibility of a program targeting people fifty years old and older with possible aerobics or marching groups. Financial Secretary Mikulas responded that the dance club could be a possible large expense and wondered how the DYCs would be involved. President Leshikar responded the DYCs were authorized to attend a lodge meeting once a year but could go to a lodge meeting three times a year if there is no youth leader.

4/VESTNIK—Wednesday, December 14, 1994 FAC REPORT - The FAC's report was reviewed. Director Hanus inquired as to whether or not the SPJST request the local lodge to report on the volunteer services they do. He was told yes we do request the reports; but some lodges do not report any of the volunteer services.

Seconded by Director Hanus to authorize, motion carried unanimously.

President Leshikar also brought it to the Board members attention that the state volley ball tournament would be held in the Bruceville-Eddy gymnasium since the Temple gymnasium is being remodeled.

SALES/MEMBERS SERVICE STRATEGY AND OBJECTIVES - Vice President Mikeska reported on several objectives that he wants to accomplish in the Vice President's Department. These include: 1). To have an active sales representative in every lodge. 2.) To have an active sales representative assigned to those members on our hooks whose sales representative is no longer active or available and have every member contacted by a sales representative annually and/or regular periodic times.

3.) To have an ongoing evaluation of our products and development of new products.

Vice President Mikeska is investigating the possibility of our next product being an ordinary life with a graded death benefit. 4.) To seek to train sales representatives to assure they are utilizing some form of need analysis and selling to meet those needs.

5.) Since much of the above efforts will essentially be done on a "lodge by lodge" basis, the Insurance Department needs to be joined by the Fraternal Department as we go through our system on a "lodge by lodge" basis. The Fraternal Department and Insurance Department can take advantage of the joint momentum generated by the combined efforts when working with an individual lodge. President Leshikar moved, seconded by Director Kohutek to authorize Vice President Mikeska to develop and bring to the Board another new plan of insurance for approval. Motion carried unanimously.

The Editor's report was reviewed.. Director Vavra reported that any recommendations for changes or improvements to the Vestnik should go to Chairman of the Publication Committee.

Recess was taken from 1 0:20a.m. to 1 0:35a.m.

LIABILITY INSURANCE ON TRIPS/TOURS - A trip that was mentioned in FAC Klinkovsky's report is not being sponsored by the SPJST. Director Vavra made a motion to request answers concerning the cost of liability insurance for the SPJST on trips with the information being available at the next meeting. Seconded by Director Vanek. Carried unanimously.

OLD BUSINESS - President Leshikar reported that according to SPJST By-Law Article 2(b), the Supreme Lodge is to follow the Robert's Rule of Order during their meeting. Legal Advisor Kacir was given the duty of reviewing the agenda to make sure the meeting follows the Robert's Rule of Order.

LODGE INCORPORATION - The President's Department and Legal Advisor is working on incorporation guidelines for lodges. Legal Advisor Kacir reminded the Board members that he has models of by-laws and incorporation articles which he would he glad to share with any lodge that requested them if the Board adopts this procedure. After a long discussion on the information presented to the Board concerning the problems a lodge may have in trying to incorporate, it was decided to notify lodges considering incorporation after the information becomes available.

MUSEUM - The Jacobson Exhibit was donated from an individual in Austin. The items will be brought to the museum with a part of the items being stored until space becomes available. There will be an area in the museum which will be devoted to the Jacobson Exhibit only.

CHAIRMAN POKLADNIK welcomed Editor Vanicek to the meeting. Editor Vanicek introduced Melanie Zavodny, the new Communications Assistant. Vice President Mikeska introduced Field Representative Jerry Kucera.

VICE PRESIDENT'S DEPARTMENT - Vice President Mikeska reported earned premiums for the first nine months were up approximately $65,000.00 while the total number of applications was down 144.

ANNUITY I TO ANNUITY 11 TRANSFER PROGRAM - Vice President Mikeska reported that Annuity I certificate holders have transferred over $5 million into the Annuity II SPDA. The program is still available for the members who wish to make the transfers from Annuity Ito Annuity II. MODTERM INSURANCE - The MODTERM product was placed on the market effective November 1 and has been filed with the Texas Department of Insurance on a file and use basis. A copy of the product description, commission, schedule, and rate pages of the new MODTERM product has been placed in the exhibits. Motion was made by Vice President Mikeska seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas for the ratification of the information and schedule of the product as described and presented.

Motion carried unanimously.

Vice President Mikeska requested ratification of a note book computer for the new Field Representative Jerry Kucera. Motion by Director Broz, seconded by Director Hanus to authorize the purchase of the note book computer. Motion carried unanimously.

CALENDAR INSERT - Vice President Mikeska asked ratification of the contest for members who return the information card that are being mailed with the calendars.

The prizes are two 19 inch television sets and one $50.00 gift certificate and are an incentive for completing the needed household information for our records. Motion by Director Broz, seconded by Director Vavra to ratify the contest and the prizes for the contest. Motion carried unanimously.

TEXAS FRATERNAL CONGRESS - Vice President Mikeska thanked Director Broz for conducting the installation ceremony at the TFC when he was installed TFC President. Vice President Mikeska further reported that Temple has been selected as the site of the 1995 TFC Convention provided that he feels confident the accommodations are adequate.

STAFF INCENTIVE - After extensive discussion as to possible measurements on which to base a staff incentive program, it was decided to form a committee of the five officers and Director Vavra and Director Kohutek to present ideas for a staff incentive

The State Field Manager McBride's report was reviewed and Vice President Mikeska reported he felt State Field Manager McBride was doing an outstanding job and had made very good accomplishments.

LIABILITY INSURANCE - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin presented a Discrimination E and 0 policy and explained what type of coverage would he included. It was explained the Society's insurance agent had found an area where coverage was lacking. This policy will cover some of the Society's exposure. Vice President Mikeska made a motion to purchase the coverage. Motion seconded by Director Vavra and carried unanimously.

REO 189 - Property I and Property II are located in McLennan County. Property I is listed for sale and Property II was sold with the closing scheduled for November 1.

Motion by Director Hanus, seconded by Director Broz to ratify the sale. Motion carried unanimously.

REO 190 -Property located in Williamson County was sold. Motion by Vice President Mikeska, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas to ratify the sale of the property.

Motion carried unanimously.

REO 191- Residence located in Ennis, Texas. Property has been listed with Century 21 Realtors. Motion by Director Vavra, seconded by Director Broz that officers and Director Pokladnik have full authority to negotiate any offer. Motion carried unanimously.

LOSS RESERVE ON REAL ESTATE OWNED - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin recommended a loss reserve of $40,000.00 for REOs and moved approval of the reserve.

Motion was seconded by Director Bayer. Motion carried unanimously.

REAL ESTATE LOANS - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin referred to a list of loans delinquent three or more months. She reported twenty delinquent loans over three months: Of the loans, six are on a work out, four in bankruptcy/foreclosure, three have deferrals, and the remaining seven do not fit in any category. A motion was made by Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, seconded by Vice President Mikeska to approve the recommended action on the delinquent loans. Motion carried unanimously.

LOSS RESERVE ON REAL ESTATE LOANS - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin recommended a loss reserve of $18,927.68 and moved for approval for a reserve in that amount. Motion was seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas and carried unanimously.

LOAN MODIFICATION PROGRAM - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin made a motion to continue the real estate loan modification program for one year with the same qualifications and stipulations. The rate for loans modified would be 1/4 of a percent above the regular real estate loan rate. Seconded by Director Kohutek. Carried unanimously.

LODGE COMPLIANCE - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported requests will he mailed on November 18 to all the local lodges for an update on the newly elected officers for 1995 and the basic information on all of the local lodges.

DIRECT BILL - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported that SPJST has converted 106 lodges to direct bill consisting of 50, 227 certificates. This completes 97 percent of our certificate membership and 94 percent of our lodges.

VESTNIK - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported the total subscription now stands at 8,715. The weekly postage now amounts to approximately $1,170.00 and $1,000.00 in publishing the Vestnik. He stated the SPJST received information that the 0. S. Postal Service has proposed a 16.7 percent increase in 2nd class mailing rates effective 1-0195. This would increase postage costs by approximately $8,000.00 per year or $169.00 per week.

LOCAL LODGE INCENTIVE PROGRAM - According to Financial Secretary Mikulas there have been nine lodges which met the gold award in the incentive program for the number of new members, one lodge the silver award, eight lodges bronze award, three lodges honorable mention, eighteen lodges the first step.

ANNUITIES - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported that we have 1,900 certificates in Annuity I for a total of $28,217,811.13 and 517 certificates in Annuity ll for a total of $9,451,81 1.77.

AUDIT - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported he had only received bids for the internal audit from 1.) Brockway, Chupik Gersbach, and Niemeier, P.C., 2.) Lott Vernon and Company P.C. and 3.) Jaynes, Reithmeier, Boyd, and Therrell, P.C. After extensive discussion it was decided on motion by President Leshikar, seconded

by Director Vanek to accept the low bid which was from Jaynes, Reithmeier, Boyd, and Therrell, P.C. Motion carried unanimously.

Financial Secretary Mikulas reported on a check from Lodge 85 for over paid dues. By common consent it was decided to deposit these monies in the General Fund.

LIBRARY ARCHIVES MUSEUM COMIVII'll BE - President Leshikar reported that he had scheduled a meeting for Saturday, December 10, 1994, of the LAM Committee at the Home Office.

INCENTIVE BANQUET - -Vice President Mikeska recommended inviting all sales representatives who wrote eight insurance applications, attended two classes, Quarter Back Club winners at least once, Coaches Club/Running Back Club once. The recognition will include winners of trips, million dollar producers, Coaches Club, and Quarter back Club. President Leshikar made a motion to approve invitations to the above listed sales representatives to attend the incentive banquet. Director Hanus seconded, motion carried.

STATE FIELD STAFF - Vice President Mikeska requested ratification of purchasing blazers for the field representatives to replace their worn out jackets. President Leshikar requested blazers for State Youth Director and State FAC also. Director Hanus made a motion to ratify the purchase of the blazers for the Field Staff, the State Youth Director, and State Fraternal Activity Coordinator. Motion seconded by Director Bayer, carried unanimously.

MODTERM INCENTIVE PROGRAM - Vice President Mikeska requested authorization to implement a "Lincoln Run" incentive program for the new Modterm certificate. The new incentive program would end at the next regular scheduled board meeting and be reviewed at that time. Vice President Mikeska made a motion to approve the "Lincoln Run," seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir. Motion carried unanimously.

INCENTIVE PROGRAMS - Vice President Mikeska presented incentive programs for the sales representatives with a bi-monthly and annual recognition program. This program recognition will be based upon applicants, insurance written, and earned premiums. He also reported on an incentive program based on earned premiums and requested permission for short term contests. Director Bayer made a motion to authorize Vice President Mikeska to proceed to put into effect the different sales incentive programs which were outlined in his report. Director Kohutek seconded, motion carried unanimously.

LITIGATION - Tax Suits - Legal Advisor Kacir reported on loans in foreclosure, bankruptcy, and tax suits.

Vice President Mikeska reported on two sales representatives that were unable to take the trips they won on incentive prizes. Financial Secretary Mikulas made a motion that due to the unusual circumstances SPJST give cash for the trips. Seconded by Director Vavra, carried unanimously.

MORTGAGE LENDING INSTITUTE - Legal Advisor Kacir reported on the Mortgage Lending Institute he attended. He feels we need to get the word out to the membership about our mortgage loan program.

Meeting reconvened at 1:00 p.m.

LITIGATION - Legal Advisor Kacir requested an increase from $90.00 to $98.00 per hour for threatened litigation, litigation, and legislation and presented the basis for this request. This request is in compliance with the recommendations of the Finance Committee as adopted by the 1992 Convention. President Leshikar made a motion to approve Legal Advisor Kacir's request to increase the hourly rate from $90.00 to $98.00 per hour for litigation, threatened litigation, and legislation. Vice President Mikeska seconded the motion. Voting in favor were: President Leshikar, Director Hanus, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Vice President Mikeska, Chairman Pokladnik, and Secretary-Treasurer Anglin. Voting against were Director Vavra, Director Kohutek, Director Broz, Director Vanek, and Director Bayer. Legal Advisor Kacir abstained. Motion carried.

EMPLOYEES SALARY - The matter of adjustment of the employees salaries was discussed, and raises were allocated.

LOCAL LODGE 1VIAI"IER - A letter was read by President Leshikar to the Board from Attorneys Taylor and Durham reporting on a claim against a local lodge.

CHARTER LODGES - President Leshikar reported on request from two charter lodges for funds from the charter lodge restoration funds as authorized by the Convention. Director Vavra moved to pay the requests from Lodge 20 - Granger and Lodge 23 - Moravia and limit the charter lodges to the maximum amount they can receive from the charter restoration fund to twenty percent of the funds. Director Vanek seconded. Director Bayer abstained from voting. The motion passed.

AGE 96 - President Leshikar reviewed the members who will be attaining age 96 during the year of 1995. He requested that any Director who knew of any changes with the member to please notify him.

GOAL SETTING FOR 1995 - President Leshikar reported that the IRS is currently auditing the fraternal part of the different fraternal insurance companies. He suggested some possible goals for 1995.

LOCAL LODGE INCENTIVE PROGRAM - President Leshikar reported that approximately 50 lodges will earn incentive awards which is up from last year. The reporting from the lodges helps to determine which lodges are not participating in each category. There has been an additional category added this year giving the Lodge Incentive Program five different classifications.

INVESTMENTS - Director Broz made a motion to ratify the investments of the period from July 1, 1994, thru September 30, 1994, seconded by Director Vavra, carried unanimously.

INTEREST SENSITIVE PRODUCTS - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin recommended the interest on Universal Life remain at 7.15 percent. The interest rate on Annuity I remain at 5.25 percent and the interest rate on Annuity II and the immediate Annuity's to remain at 6.25 percent thru January 31, 1995. Motion seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir, carried unanimously.

HOME OFFICE BUILDING - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported on the window tinting in the filing room has begun to chip and peel. This tinting was put on the building some twenty years ago. President Leshikar moved to authorize Secretary-Treasurer Anglin to accept bids for the window tinting and for having the windows in the filing room retinted. Motion seconded by Director Kohutek and carried unanimously.

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported that our current telephone system was purchased in 1982 and does not meet the requirements for the American Disability Act. Bids were presented from four different telephone systems which would meet the ADA requirements. Director Hanus moved to purchase and install a new telephone system at the Home Office from ICS and to authorize the officers to make a contract for the system. Motion seconded by Director Kohutek and carried unanimously.

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported the bolts holding one of the limestone slabs at the base of the building was rusted and the slab was loose. Financial Secretary Mikulas made a motion to contact the architect and do what ever is necessary to repair any slabs that needed to be repaired. Seconded by Director Vavra, carried unanimously.

FINANCIAL STATEMENT - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported on the financial statement of nine months ending September 30, 1994. The total expenses have increased over the same period from last year due to rollover from Annuity Ito Annuity II. DISCOUNTS - According to Article 33-(a) (14) of the By Laws, SPJST is authorized to allow a discount on Class A and B certificates for the year of 1995. Previously discounts allowed are a 25 percent reduction of premiums to all members of certificates in Class A and B, whose certificates were in force 35 years or more. An additional 25 percent reduction when the insured attains the age of seventy-five years. Director Pokladnik made the motion to allow the discounts for the Class A and B certificates.

Seconded by Director Broz, carried unanimously.

6/VESTN K—Wednesday, December 14, 1994 REFUND TO LODGES - Director Manus moved that the Financial Secretary compute the amount of refund which would be paid to local lodges based upon the formula that was used in 1993. These figures need to be submitted for approval in the January Board Meeting. Motion seconded by Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, carried unanimously.

LOCAL AD VALOREM TAXES - Legal Advisor Kacir presented an article which may help in lowering ad valorem taxes for our local lodges which have lodge halls.

Legal Advisor Kacir moved that Secretary-Treasurer Anglin to write each lodge with a building and request a copy of the current appraisal form or tax receipt, to be mailed to the Home Office no later that January 10, 1995. Motion seconded by President Leshikar and carried unanimously.

DIRECTORS' REPORT DISTRICT I - Director Vavra requested an update on the sidewalks around the building. Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported that she has been unable to receive any other bids. It was suggested that we look at the possibility of doing an overlay for the sidewalks. Director Vavra reported on Lodge 186 having a second session of Czech classes with approximately sixty people attending. He congratulated Vice President Mikeska for being the new President of the Texas Fraternal Congress. He reported on the District I Fun Day which nearly got drowned out and also read a letter from a Youth Leader.

DISTRICT II - Director Kohutek reported that approximately 258 attended the District II Fall Meeting. He reported on attending Lodge 177 Senior Day, Lodge 74 bingo night, Lodge 24 Children's Miracle Network benefit dance and the upcoming barbecue and garage sale. Director Kohutek also wondered if "Fraternal Life Insurance" could be added to the caps which are used for advertising.

Letters from the Lodges Lodge 15, Buckholts Reports on November Meeting The meeting was called to order by President Gladys Allison. She also lead the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance. Members remained standing for a moment of silence for our departed members.

The minutes, treasury and all committee reports were approved.

He also discussed SPJST mortgage loan interest rates as compared to the interest rates of other financial institutions in his district. He thanked the officers for their reports and Legal Advisor Kacir for his help on real estate loans. Director Broz invited everyone to the Lodge 160 Meeting on December 11.

DISTRICT V - Director Hanus presented a request from the youth in District V to make a donation to the HEB foundation. He also reported on Lodge 172 Czech Festival and Lodge 88 Czech Day. He reported on his trip to TFC. He requested Financial Secretary Mikulas to furnish him with various information.

DISTRICT VI - Director Vanek inquired if it would be possible for the Board to see the movie taken at the Incentive Banquet. President Leshikar stated he would have the movie available at the January meeting. Director Vanek reported on pictures of District VI Youth and a 50 year presentation that had appeared in local newspapers. Director Vanek expressed appreciation to the officers for doing a good job.

DISTRICT VII - Director Bayer reported on Fun Day in Jourdanton. He expressed his appreciation to Vice President Mikeska and Editor Vanicek for attending District VII Fun Day. DISTRICT III - Chairman Pokladnik thanked Financial Secretary Mikulas for attending the District III Fall Meeting. He congratulated Vice President Mikeska for being elected the President of TFC and for asking Kathy Fritz to help him with the convention. He also reminded the Board members of the meeting December 16 at 10:00 a.m. in regards to the SPJST 100TH ANNIVERSARY. He thanked the officers for their reports and reminded everyone what a great group we have here.

The next meeting is scheduled for January 16, 17, and 18, 1995 at 8:30 a.m.

24, Cyclone Casino Night Auction Raises $35,791,200.50 Lodge

Dear Members and Friends, Thanks to all of our guests who attended and participated in our December 3 Casino Night. Special thanks to Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar and his wife, Mary, and to District Two Director Willie Kohutek and his wife, Adeline, for coming out and showing their support. The Casino Night was a first for Flag Hall— and based on your overwhelming response—it probably won't be the last.

After three hours of gaming action, players purchased a total of 58 live auction items, generating more than $35 million—wouldn't it be nice if that was the real thing! In addition to the live auction, a silent auction also raised a good amount of hard currency for Lodge 24. Thanks to all members and area merchants for the support you gave to this project.

Lodge 66, Waco Reports on December Meeting Dear Members, The Lodge 66, Waco meeting was called to order at 2 p.m. by President Keith Gatewood.

The flags were presented by Butch Wigley and Shane Pruitt.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Ace Wigley, and Justin Engelke led the lodge motto.

The members stood in a moment of silence for our deceased members Rose Galler, Maurine Trefny, and Regina Adamcik. May they rest in peace.

All officers were present except Bonnie Pruitt, Recording Secretary.

The minutes of the October meeting were read by Sister Leona Nors and with a minor correction, they were approved.

The Entertainment Committee report was given by Gloria Locke. Our Christmas Party will be December 10.

Doors open at 3 p.m. We will have Michna's cater the meal. There will be a visit from Santa and the youth will present a short program. The dance will begin after the program. Members are asked to bring desserts.

Mary Langlotz presented the FAC report. There will be no social game night in December. Our next social game night will be January 9, 1995, at 7 p.m.

80, Holland Reports on December Meeting Lodge

Dear Members and Friends, At 3 p.m. on Sunday, December 4, President Harold Rohde called the meeting of Lodge 80, Holland to order. After the opening exercises, SecretaryTreasurer Glen Latham read the minutes from the preceding meeting mentioning our new members, Luke, Rachel, and Sara Hajda. We hope to see you at the Christmas Party. The minutes were approved as read.

Brother Latham reported that $100 was donated to the Bell County Youth Fair for our Gold Star membership and $25 to the Holland American Legion Auxiliary for their poppy drive for Veterans. He also stated that the parking lot work was completed and that one payment was made in November and a matching one would be made in December.

The lodge received a Christmas card from District Director Willie Kohutek and his lovely wife, Adeline. We also received a thank you for the Taylor Trent and Prospect Home for donating money for their students to attend the zoo in San Antonio.

Brother Latham also stated the Texas Lottery Commission had audited the books and everything was in order. The switch to direct bill was completed.

Christi Circle of Women Reports on December Meeting Corpus

Lodge

SPJST Lodge 200, Bruceville-Eddy would like to express our appreciation to the Supreme Lodge for the opportunity to host the State Volleyball Tournament.

Since we do not have a hall, this afforded us an opportunity to display our fraternalism to the other lodges of SPJST. We try to be a very active lodge and without a hall, it is sometimes difficult to hold members' enthusiasm. This event really helped with our members and also getting SPJST Lodge 200 mentioned in our community.

We would also like to thank the other teams, from Lodge 66, Waco, Lodge 177, Academy, Lodge 88, Houston, and the District Five teenagers.

Other lodges should start making plans for this event next year as everyone seemed to have a good time. Believe me, you don't have to be twenty years old to participate.

Circle of Czech Women Enjoy Christmas Party Dallas

Our December meeting was our Christmas Party.

President Bertha Podhrasky asked us to stand for, a moment of silence in memory of Bill Foit, husband of Doris, who was a member of our Krouzek and a close friend of all of us. We extend our

The December 1 meeting of the Corpus Christi Circle of Women turned out to be a real treat for the 27 members and two guests attending. Becky Elzner and hubby Dan Jackson did a great job decorating the room and tables with help from Jerry Elzner and Norma Baker (and a little assistance from Milly Elzner and me).

The tables were beautiful with live poinsettias, place mats from the Czech Republic wishing everyone Doubrou Chut, and individual place cards in Santa Claus and Christmas tree squeezers, each of which held a Koruna. There were also two pieces of wrapped chocolates from Poland at each place setting.

The food catered by Jack's Dinner Bell was outstanding as was the fun and fellowship enjoyed by all.

A corner table was covered with gifts the members brought to be donated to the Women's Shelter. This made me feel good just to see them all, especially the toys.

We had received two door prizes from Lottie Ramey in California and a door prize each from Agnes Burge and her daughter, Diane, in Kerrville. After sending the prizes for our drawing, Agnes and Diane decided to drive to Corpus Christi for our dinner-meeting. It was a real pleasure seeing Agnes again and meeting Diane for the first time. We hope they can make the trip again in the near future.

Lottie was with us in our thoughts as we all signed a Christmas card to send her.

A thank you card from Frances Kosarek was read. Frances is visiting her daughter in Houston. We miss her at our meetings.

A thank you card for our donation to Sokol was read as was a Christmas card to us all received by Betty Jurica from Lottie Ramey.

Agnes Elzner Burge sent a generous donation in memory of her sister, Anne Spencer, and also sponsored her niece, Heidi Spencer Spangler, for membership.

now living just outside Houston. We hope she visits us soon.

Mary, Della, Milly, Agnes and Jerry Elzner as well as Diane McRae spoke a few words about their recent visits to the Czech Republica Agnes, who attended the Slet, hopes to attend the next one, also. The pictures she donated to Sokol Corpus Christi of the Slet performances were outstanding. There are no words to describe the sight of 24,000 gymnasts in perfect formations. Impressive is an understatement.

Happy Birthday was sung to Lillian Corvill, Milly Elzner, Carrie Veselka, Diane McRae and Leona Matula before we started on the drawing for door prizes.

Names were drawn for sixteen various door prizes. Another ten drawings took place for all the poinsettia plants and poinsettia decorations. On top of all that, Norma Baker passed out crochet doilies to each lady and Jerry Elzner handed out Czech post cards. It was truly like Christmas.

Rose Huff is still recovering from her fall and was unable to be with us.

Pauline Novosad and Velma Malchar were both ill but hope to attend our next meeting on January 5. Since our hostess list was unavailable, it was decided to brown bag it for our first meeting in 1995. I hope to see all of our members then and also hope everyone has a pleasant Christmas and starts the New Year in good health.

Travis-Williamson County Chapter of Czech Heritage Society Hosts Czech Exchange Students The Travis-Williamson County Chapter of Czech Heritage Society welcomed six Czech students from Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic, who are attending the University of Texas at Austin (UT) and Helena Confortiova, Ph.D., Czech instructor and resident director in charge of the Czech exchange students.

The students are attending UT under a U.S. Government Federal Grant for the purpose of providing an opportunity for the students to learn about American life and improve their English language skills. Dr. Confortiova, a linguist, is teaching Czech I and Czech II courses at UT during the fall semester. She will be returning to her position at Charles University at the completion of the fall semester.

The Travis-Williamson County Chapter are host families for the group.

The host families attended a get-acquainted reception, sponsored by the International Office at UT, on August 29 to introduce the students to their host families. The host families are Gilbert and Vlasta Vitek; Dorothy Bohac; Cyril and Eileen Rosipal; Conrad and Betty Danner; Jim and Frances Fetter; Gary and Ginny Marek; Hy Burt; Roy Eston; and Lee and Vera Whering.

The host families welcomed the students and their director with a family picnic and hamburger supper on Labor Day, September 5, 1994, at the home of Conrad and Betty Danner. This gettogether provided an opportunity for the

Wednesday, December 14, 1994—VESTNIKJ9 group to learn about the significance of Labor Day and how Americans celebrate this national holiday.

The host families will introduce this group of Czechs to the American CzechMoravian way of life by inviting them to visit their homes, and by attending festivals such as the West Fest, Caldwell Kolache Fest, and a Czech Bazaar in Marak, Texas. Plans were also underway for a group of 46 chapter members and the Czech students to attend Czech Day at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas on October 16. Other plans include attending the State Czech Heritage Society Fall Meeting in San Antonio on November 12, 1994, visiting the Historical Fayette County where many Czech Moravians settled when they emigrated to America, and attending football and baseball games.

The Czech students and their instruc-

tor are receiving a taste of American and the Czech-Moravian-American way of life. One student commented at the hamburger picnic supper, "You are happy and are having fun and enjoying life."

However, some members of the Czech group expressed concern about the American crime rate.

Two members of the Chapter, Vlasta Vitek and Dorothy Bohac, are attending the Czech I and Czech II classes at UT with Dr. Confortiova. Both are reporting that they are enjoying the courses and find them very helpful in learning the Czech language. Vlasta expressed her amazement that the Czech I students, with no previous experience with the Czech language, can within a two-week period engage in a light Czech conversation and are beginning to learn to read and write in Czech. Tierce is a "Sideline Winner"

(Editor's Note: Jesika Tierce, a member of the Lodge 66, Waco Youth Club, is head cheerleader of the LaVega Pirates Varsity Cheerleading Squad.

The squad recently took first place in Division I of the Baylor University Cheer-Off, competing with several squads from around Central Texas. The following article, which appeared in the Waco Tribune-Herald, illustrates the kind of enthusiasm and dedication Jesika brings to all that she does.)

Story by Vicki Marsh Kabat This past football season, the LaVega Pirates varsity football team gave fans a lot to cheer about. Leading the support are 14 girls who have earned the right to cheer for themselves, as well.

LaVega's varsity cheerleading squad recently took first place in Division I of the Baylor University Cheer-Off, competing against several squads with 11 to 20 members from throughout Central Texas.

It wasn't easy.

"The day before, we were practicing and one of our girls sprained her back and we changed all the cheers and everything that same day so we could still go," said Venise Wells, a 17-year-old senior who is a head cheerleader.

There was more trouble.

The next day, one girl couldn't make it to a practice before the competition.

Fearing she wouldn't make it to the Cheer-Off, the squad changed its cheers again.

"We were frustrated. I mean, we

didn't expect to win, but we just wanted to go and at least try," Venise said.

They did more than try. They won.

That kind of determination doesn't surprise the squad's coach, Martha Schroeder, who has led the La Vega cheerleaders for six years.

"My girls pride themselves on the fact they are good and they know they're good, and it's because they worked hard to get there," she said. "It takes a lot of work and a lot of guts and a lot of strong people."

One of the gutsiest on the squad in Jesika Tierce. Although one of the smallest in size, "she'll do anything and she"ll try anything," Schroeder said.

"Anything they want me to do, I'll do it, said 17-year-old Jesika, a head cheerleader. "Since I was a gymnast (for seven years), I have the skill to know what I am doing. I'm always the guinea pig, but I don't mind."

Hard work, guts, and strength.

Sounds like qualities for a football player.

That's a comparison Schroader thinks is apt.

"We have to work as hard as (football players), and just as much to make sure everything works, because we always want to be perfect," said Jesika, who hopes to get a cheerleading scholarship to the University of Texas. "Our squad's not out there to be pretty. We're out there to help encourage."

Dear Vestnik Readers, I attended the District Fall Fun Day at Lodge 17, New Tabor. Though the rain gloomed the day, the fun filled the hall.

I got my first shot at playing SPJST football. The meal was delicious.

Two members from Lodge 13, Dime Box and I placed in the Christmas ornament contest. I won second place in the Ages 6-8 group. Sue Ellen Flippin won first place in the Ages 12-14 group and Delia Wiederhold placed second in the Ages 12-14 group. I had a good time!

88, Houston Youth Club Reports on October and November Meetings Lodge

Dear Members and Readers, October Meeting President Justin Miller called the October meeting to order at 6:40 p.m. on Wednesday, October 26. We had a short meeting because the lodge adults were preparing for the annual Czech Day Turkey Dinner.

The youth club will sell homemade ice cream and have a craft booth in the back yard of the Lodge 88 grounds. We also discussed the upcoming Recognition Awards Reception on November 4 at 4 p.m.

Mrs. Cindy Havemann talked about a new committee set up by the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. It is the llama committee. She is collecting pledges to purchase llamas to be raised.

The meeting adjourned at 7:15 p.m.

November Meeting Our November 16 meeting was called to order by President Justin Miller at 6:45 p.m. The various committees gave reports on upcoming events.

Mrs. Bender reminded everyone of the upcoming Christmas Program rehearsals on Tuesday, November 29 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, December 3 at 10 a.m. Our annual lodge Christmas program will be Monday, December 5 at 7 p.m. We will be performing the "Twelve Days of Christmas" and also the Christmas program "Cajun Night Before Christmas".

The youth will also decorate the lodge Christmas tree on Tuesday, November 29. Once again, the Havemann family will donate a home-grown tree from their farm.

The youth club will be joining the Lodge 88 Choral Group for their annual trip to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 2 in Needville, Texas, on Saturday, December 10, at 10 a.m. Each youth is asked to bring a gift for a resident.

Our youth club Christmas party will be Monday, December 19 at 6:30 p.m. It was discussed to have a covered dish supper and invite our parents.

Mrs. Linney asked if the youth would again like to visit the Shriners Hospital. A date is to be announced later We will again bring stuffed animals to the children.

The annual lodge meeting will be at 10 a.m. on Sunday, December 11. We were all encouraged to attend.

88, Houston Youth Club Participates in Awards Party

Dear Members and Readers, Lodge 88, Houston had a Gold Recipient Award Party on Sunday, November 6 at 4 p.m.

Each committee at Lodge 88 spoke about their activities. The youth club was also asked to speak and perform. Several youth members spoke on the different activities and programs we do throughout the youth year. We also talked about camp and our charity work.

We performed a program called "The Flag." Several LIT's read the poem while the younger youth club members carried American Flags. Then a tape of "Beautiful America" by the Vrazel Polka Band was played with the words being sung in English and Czech. We also asked all of the Veterans to join us on the dance floor and we shook each of their hands and told them "thank you." They have done a great job protecting America for our future. This brought watery eyes and even a few tears. It was a very moving moment. Several pictures were taken of the veterans. We were told over and over how much they enjoyed the program and also how much it meant to them for the youth to remember them.

Thank you, Mrs. Wehring and Mrs. Hegwood, for asking us to be a part of this great day. We look forward to participating in next year's award's program.

Dear Readers, I would like to thank the following six Lodge 88 Youth Club members for donating their time to a worthy charity.

Chad Barnes, Holly Hubbard, Lindsey Michalek, Kristy Sokol, Kristen Bender, and Krystle Bender spent Saturday, November 12 helping in the construction of a house for Habitat for Humanity. My employer, a major insurance company, sponsored the crew to construct this house for a needy family.

Chad and E.J. Bender, my husband, dug holes and set mailboxes, while Holly and Kristen mixed the cement. Chad and E.J. also hung cabinets.

Kristy, Lindsey, Holly, Kristen, Krystle and I spent time painting kitchen shelving, doors, walls and occasionally, even ourselves!

This home is one of ten being constructed at one major job site. A neighborhood of 30 homes is being built. The home we worked on was in phase two of the neighborhood construction process.

At our last youth club meeting, these six individuals were given a standing ovation for doing such a good deed. This is a true gesture of Fraternalism, Brotherhood, and Humanity, three of the watchwords of the SPJST. Fraternally, Jeanette Bender Assistant Youth Leader

Dear Youth Club Members, Our youth club had a homemade ice cream booth and craft booth at the Lodge 88 Czech Day. We sold our ice cream for $1.00 per bowl and you could also add sprinkles and chocolate syrup if you wanted to. We made $126.00 and sold vanilla, peach, and strawberry flavors.

Vanilla was the most popular flavor.

Our craft booth sold $87.50 in Christmas items, straw hats, and other crafts.

The youth club would like to thank everyone who supported our booths.

We also performed in the lodge hall.

Our LIT's read a poem called "The Flag" and the younger members carried American Flags. This was a tribute to the Veterans who attended the Czech Day. We also tried to shake all of the Veterans hands.
