Something Old is Something New The SPJST Insurance Department came out with a new insurance plan this month. It's called "Modterm"-short for "Modified Term" insurance and it's expected to be one of SPJST's big sellers in the coming months.

In a nutshell, Modterm is a ten-year, renewable term certificate that carries with it a unique "original age enhancement option." It's meant to appeal to people between the ages of 20 and 70 who want a lot of insurance for a little hit of money.

"The age enhancement option allows the certificate holder to double his or her coverage at any time between the second and ninth year of the Modterm issue date at the original premium rate," explains Supreme Lodge Vice President Leonard Mikeska.

"For example, let's say you purchase a $100,000 Modterm certificate in 1994.

Then, in 1998, you decide that you would like to double that amount to $200,000.

You can do it at the 1994 premium rate."

Another feature of the Modterm certificate is that at the end of the ten-year term, the certificate is automatically renewable without having to demonstrate proof of insurability. The new rate will be based on your age at the time your certificate is renewed.

"The Modterm certificate will provide a very easy and cost effective way for business people or families to increase their coverage as their business grows or their financial obligations increase."

According to Brother Mikeska, term coverage is "nothing new" for SPJST; however, he notes that it is even more affordable now than it was ten years ago.

"Even then it was a good deal," he says.

Three factors, he explains, account for the lower-price per thousand of coverage.

"Increased competition within the insurance industry, improved mortality-rates, and more efficient servicing costs all combine to make this new term product an affordable alternative to permanent insurance."

The Modterm certificate can be purchased in varying amounts to fit your particular needs. The minimum certificate value is $25,000. The maximum "buyin" is $1 million-although, as Brother Mikeska points out, "The age enhancement option would allow the certificate holder to double that amount to $2 million between the second and ninth yearif he or she so desired."

While the new Modterm certificate provides the same protection as SPJST permanent insurance, buyers need to understand that the certificate is not designed to build cash values or to be

owned for an entire lifetime. The Modterm certificate is convertible to permanent insurance without having to demonstrate proof of insurability up to age 65.

If yours is a two-income family, Modterm insurance on both you and your spouse will enable your family to continue its present lifestyle if either of you should die prematurely. Likewise, if your family is a one-income household, Modterm certificates are still a good idea for both spouses. Modterm insurance on the income-earner will provide financial stability for the family while Modterm insurance on the partner at home will help cover the cost of replacing many services-especially if young children are involved. In her position as Legal Assistant, Sister Ernst communicates verbally and in writing with members, attorneys, title companies and visitors. She is responsible for seeing that deadlines and answer dates are met. In addition, she researches city, county, state and federal matters, including laws, cases and administrative matters. She also shepardizes and prepares briefs in these areas.

!!'motire" organizational skills during the 13 years she served as manager for three Baskin-Robbins ice cream parlors in Lubbock, Corpus Christi and in Temple.

"As you can imagine, selling ice cream is a very customer-oriented kind of thing," Susie says. "You learn that the most important part of business is keeping the customer happy."

A relative newcomer to SPJST operations, Susie enjoys her work.

"I believe that it is important that we all work together," she says. "We are all ultimately working toward the same goal.

"Our members are important. We need to make them feel that they always have a place to turn and that they will be heard and that their concerns are taken seriously."

Susie and her husband, David, have three children, Heather, 13; Adam, 10; and Lauren, 5. Susie, who is a past Girl Scout leader, takes an active interest in activities and issues affecting her children and other young people.

"Kids are the most important thing in the world to me," she says. "It's so important that they be made a priority." Susie was recently appointed to the Finance Committee of the Rosebud Primary School Parent and Teachers Organization (PTO).

When she finds a spare moment, Susie's hobbies include making crafts and teaching cake decorating.

Additionally, Susie reviews and offers suggestions to revise and update the SPJST procedures manuals. She prepares first drafts of all recurring reports and reviews title examinations, prepares loan instruments, and handles other litigation and legislative matters of paralegal expertise for the Home Office, local lodges and members.

Susie is a graduate of Temple High School. She received additional instruction and professional training through Temple Junior College and Delmar Junior College in Corpus Christi.

Prior to coming to SPJST, Sister Ernst gained valuable legal experience serving as executive secretary for Strasburger Enterprises and as a legal secretary for Attorney Donna Bowling.

Letters from the Lodges Lodge 1, Fayetteville Reports on Quarterly Meeting The Fayetteville SPJST Lodge No. 1 Board of Directors and Officers met for their quarterly meeting on November 9, 1994 at the SPJST Hall.

The major item of discussion was the planning of the upcoming Christmas party. Suggestion was made to combine it with the Chamber of Commerce as there are so many activities scheduled for the holiday season. Everyone was in agreement pending the Chamber's approval. The party is set for Saturday, December 3 and will start at 7 p.m. at the SPJST Hall in Fayetteville. Turkey, ham and drinks, etc. will be provided.

Members are asked to bring a vegetable and/or dessert as well as a gift valued at $2. Ladies should bring a lady's gift and men should bring a man's gift. If you bring a guest, please bring a gift to include them, too. This is a wonderful time of the year to give and share our bounties. Those planning to attend should put their names on sign-up sheets at the Fayetteville Bank or Chovanec Grocery.

Christmas carolling was discussed with the hopes to get the entire community involved. The decision was made to put up announcements posting date and time to meet on the Fayetteville square.

Music and song is such a wonderful part of the holiday season and how uplifting it is to our shut-ins. Please make every effort to take part in this most worthwhile project. Promises to be fun!

President Polansky said he would like to get a historical marker for the SPJST Hall and everyone agreed. So, he will make an application for it. The suggestion was also made to explore the possibility of putting in a fenced playground facility at the SPJST grounds with the intention to get more family participation such as birthday parties, picnics, etc. at these outdoor facilities.

In connection with the Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce's "Lickskillet," Lodge No. 1 donated $200 towards auction items. Also, in regards to these activities, the Chamber was fortunate enough to keep their heads above water, despite the heavy rains (almost 12 inches) which put a hit of a damper on this annual event. Thanks again to community support!

Czech Heritage Society The Fayette County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society met on Sunday, November 6 at the Senior Citizens Center in LaGrange with about 20 members in attendance. New officers and directors for 1995 were elected as follows: President

The guest speaker for the meeting was Dr. Helena Consortiova of Prague, Czech Republic and a professor of languages at Charles University. She is presently at the University of Texas where she is teaching the Czech language for one semester. She spoke of the changes that their country is going through and how they are learning to adapt.

Entertainment at this meeting was provided by Donna Schnell from Houston.

Donna told of her inspiration to learn to play the dulcimer or cymbal so she had one made to her specifications. She explained how and where it was made as well as how she could change the tone by padding the wooden mallets. She played several Czech pieces. Her absolutely beautiful and natural professional style delighted and amazed to everyone.

The Fayette Czech Singers and Dancers will perform again at the Monument Hill Park in LaGrange at the annual Christmas Festival on December 11 at 3 p.m.

6, Cottonwood Invites Members to Christmas Party on Sunday, December 4

Dear Readers, As the holiday season is approaching, this is a reminder to our members, workers, and friends that we will he holding our lodge Christmas party on Sunday, December 4.

At 1 p.m., we will hold the lodge meeting and election of officers. At 2 p.m., we are inviting our lodge members and all the workers who have helped throughout the year at any time and place to a thank-you party and Christmas party.

We will have free games and free drinks.

To those who want to play dominoes or taroky, get your partners ready. The youth club will be selling raffle tickets on Christmas items.

Please note that the lodge will also be accepting non-perishable canned goods from the members during the party. The canned goods will be donated to an area food drive.

At 5 p.m., we will have a turkey and dressing supper with all the trimmings.

After supper, the youth will have a short program and then, Santa will make his appearance.

With the good attendance of all our workers at the workers party at Heitmiller's Family Steakhouse, we hope all of you will be able to attend this party.

To those who did not attend this supper, please make plans to attend the Christmas party. This is our thanks to all of you.

Lodge 24, Cyclone Reports on November Meeting Dear Readers, Lodge members met on Tuesday, November 14 for their regular monthly meeting. President Carol Chervenka called the meeting to order at 7 p.m.

Secretary Arleen Mayeux read the minutes of the October meeting which were approved as read.

One transfer to Lodge 24 and several new members were reported. The transfer is Meagan Ray. New members are Richard Greger, Rachel Lee, Regan Lee, Harold Weight, Julie Ballard and Lisa Watson.

The following correspondences were received since the October meeting: • A thank you letter from the Rogers Volunteer Fire Department, thanking Lodge 24 for the use of their barbecue facilities. The letter was accompanied by a check for $100. Bernice Sebek made a motion to endorse the check and then to return the proceeds to the Rogers VFD. The motion received a second and passed.

• A letter from the Supreme Lodge, informing of our performance in the 1994 Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program. Through September 30, the lodge had recorded 13 new members and completed six key fraternal activities.

• ./` letter from the Scott and White Home are Agency, thanking Lodge 24 for its part in hosting the recent Children's Miracle Network fund raiser.

• A letter from the Supreme Lodge informing members of upcoming SPJST tournaments.

Bernice Sebek delivered her reports on kitchen and bar receipts during October.

Youth Leader Melanie Zavodny reported on recent youth club activities, including the recent Halloween Carnival and Bake Sale. Both projects, she said, received strong support from the young people, their parents and other lodge members. Melanie also reported on the

youth group's November project to paint the lodge's parking lot barriers. She announced that the young people would be sponsoring the kitchen at the Rogers Arts and Crafts Fair on Saturday November 26. She concluded her report by announcing that the club would be particip'ating in the December 5 Christmas Parade in Temple.

Cook-Off and Sale Day a Success Under old business, Barbecue CookOff Chairman Louise Zavodny and Countywide Sale Day Chairman Sherry Tyroch delivered reports on the previous weekend's activities. Sister Zavodny reported that she was very happy to the strong support from both the cookers and the community for this first-time event.

Several cookers indicated that the Lodge 24 cook-off was the last event of the season for them and hoped that the lodge would make the cook-off a regularly scheduled event. Sister Tyroch also reported strong support for the Countywide Sale and indicated that several new vendors had already expressed an interest in participating in future sales events at Lodge 24.

Thanks to everyone who helped to make the Cook-Off and Sale Day a success, including Dennis Krcha and James Lewis for their assistance with providing electrical hook-ups for cookers. Finally, special thanks to all cookers, vendors and members of the community who turned out to support the event.

Casino Night December 3 Casino Night Chairman Bobby Hoelscher presented information on the upcoming Casino Night. Prizes for the event were also discussed. The top prize will be a trip for two to Las Vegas.

Approximately 25 other prizes, provided by area merchants, will also be awarded during the evening.

Tickets for the Casino Night are $12.50 and will cover drinks, food and currency for you to try your hand at the many table games. For ticket information, please contact Bobby at 985-2537 or any active Lodge 24 member.

Lodge Elections Lodge members voted to elect four new trustees to fill the expiring terms of Jerry Cabla, Jr., Johnny Chervenka, Barbara Macek, and Wilbert Mikeska.

The incoming trustees are Bobby Hoelscher, Sherry Tyroch, Brian Vanicek and Melanie Zavodny. They will be joining existing trustees Rosamond Baker, LaVerne Cabla, and Joe Haisler.

Lodge officer.elections for 1995 were postponed.

Trustees were charged with the responsibility of identifying prospective 1995 lodge officers and making recommendations at either the December or January meeting.

Incoming trustees met with current trustees at the end of the regular lodge meeting. As a result of this meeting, trustees will be reviewing job descriptions for lodge officers and standing committee chairmen. Lodge operating procedures will also be reviewed along with establishing goals and objectives for 1995.

New Year's Eve Dance Once again, Lodge 24 is happy to announce that the ever-popular Jed Durbin Band will be performing for our New Year's Eve dance on Saturday, December 31. Tickets are $10 each and reservations can be made by contacting Rosamond Baker at 985-2457.

Invites Members to Christmas Dinner on December 14 Our Christmas dinner will be on the regular meeting night, Wednesday, December 14. We will meet at Ramsey's Restaurant (across from DeTar Hospital) at 6:30 p.m. for a short social and eat at 6:45 p.m. You must call Kathy Ahlstrom at 578-3279 (leave a message if I am not home) to reserve a seat and place your

food order. You have a choice of grilled spencer steak, chicken fried steak, or grilled chicken breast. If you have attended half of the meetings in 1994, the lodge will pay for you and your spouse.

If you have not attended half of the meetings, you pay only $5 and the lodge will pick up the balance. What a deal! This is good old home cookin' — I guarantee you will not leave hungry—all entrees come with a salad, vegetables, 'ea, coffee and dessert.

After the meal, we will have a short business meeting with the election of officers. This meeting is short, but very important. We hope to have a good turnout and what better way could you spend a Wednesday night?

Thank you to Lodge 97, Placedo for hosting the fall social for District Six. I think everyone there had a great time.

We had a great barbecue meal and lots of good desserts. Of course, my favorite part of the day was watching the youth perform. It is hard to believe there is so much talent in this district alone. We heard little Trey Staff's solo, Hallettsville's Czech songs, watched Taiton's group dance and various other talents — variety truly is the spice of life!

The District Six King and Queen were both there —what royalty! Also special guests from Temple were President Howard Leshikar and State Fraternal Activities Coordinator and Mrs. Frank Klinkovsky. We really enjoyed having the three of you with us for the afternoon and appreciate you taking the time to join us. Also joining us from Rockport was Mr. Jim Wiest and a little closer to home, Director and Mrs. Matt Vanek. You missed out if you did not get to visit with these fine folks. We were truly fortunate to have so many special guests with us.

Again, thanks for including us in your hectic schedule.

I hope all of you are aware of the many blessings you have been granted this past year as we approach Thanksgiving. If for one minute you cannot think of many, or any, just look around—we can always find someone less fortunate.

48, Beyersville Reports on Successful Progressive 42 Tournament Lodge

The fifth annual Progressive 42 Tournament attracted 28 enthusiastic players.

Homer Sakewitz of Taylor was the big winner. He took home a traveling trophy plus a first place prize. His name is the fifth on the trophy. The other four names are Glen Paul of Caldwell (1990), Lydia Jansen of Taylor (1991), ,Dorothy Mackert of Taylor (1992), and Leonard Groppel I of Temple (1993).

Other winners of the tournament were Lillie Krueger of Taylor, second place; Gilbert Shiller of Taylor, third place; and Frances Schimcek of San Antonio, fourth place.

A delicious meal consisting of turkey, dressings and the trimmings was served.

Marsha Elzner-McDougal, a member of Lodge 79, Corpus Christi, recently completed a three-week study at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic.

Marsha is pursuing her master's degree in nursing at the University of Tennessee - Chattanooga. She did her clinical work there.

Marsha is the daughter of Jerry and Milly Elzner, both members of Lodge 79.

Marsha is also a former youth leader of Lodge 79.

State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Frank Klinkovsky, left, and Bobby Wuensche, tournament chairman, stayed busy tabulating scores for the 28 enthusiastic players. First place was determined by a tie breaker, with Homer having 12 wins out of 15 games played and scoring 123 marks. Lillie had 12 wins and 119 marks.

Terrell. Dorothy Mackert baked a birthday cake for Denisse Terrell and surprised her with it since Denisse's birthday was on the day of the tournament. Thank you, ladies! You did me proud. Also, a big thanks to Frank and Irma Klinkovsky for all of their help.

We were very happy to see some new faces in the tournament. Among them were Nita Horne, Perry Walters, Della Green, Bill Havel, Roy Betak, Denisse Terrell, and Frank and Evelyn Tomasek.

Hope you will come again next year. We were also very grateful for the large crowd which came from Lodge 29, Taylor and supported our tournament. I could not have done it without you all.

Nancy Schwertner read the minutes from the August 3 meeting. There was one correction to the minutes.

Elizabeth Urbanek reported on the clothes that lodge members collected and took to the San Angelo State School.

Lodge 49 will be taking turkeys to the two Ballinger rest homes, the Needville rest home and the Taylor rest home for Thanksgiving.

November 18 is the monthly game social and birthday party. The lodge will furnish the meat. Everyone should bring a vegetable and a dessert. Also, bring two canned goods for the food pantry.

November 20 is set for the Czech Heritage meeting. There will be no gift exchange. Instead, everyone should give to the scholarship fund.

November 26 is the Urbanek Family Reunion.

December 10 has been set for the Special Pin Presentation for our 50- and 75-year members. All members and their immediate families are urged to attend.

The lodge will furnish the meal.

The meeting was called to order at 7 p.m. by President Navratil.

by Lad Zatopek. Members then stood in silence for the deceased members, George Schiller and Lorene Kovar.

George was a very faithful member of the lodge. The secretary read the previous minutes and approved them as read.

The treasurer's report was given and approved. Income included the sale of land and land rent.

Vice President Ed Reisner gave his report and also the FAC report.

Sidney Kacir asked for opinions about the 100 year anniversary of the SPJST in 1997.

We discussed painting the hall. Bids were reviewed and postponed for more information from bidders.

The president reported that he had the heaters checked and that the land lease was signed.

The next meeting will be held December 14, 1994, at 6:30 p.m. It will be a covered dish supper. Each member is requested to bring covered dishes for his or her family and guests. This will be our Christmas meeting The election of lodge officers will be hetd at this meeting.

President Navratil informed the members he will not accept nomination and will resign at the end of the year.

Lodge 88, Houston Encourages Students to Apply for 1995 Lodge Scholarships Once again, Lodge 88, Houston will be awarding scholarships for the 1995 school year. Application forms can now be picked up at the Lodge 88 office at 1435 Beall Street and returned to the office before December 31, 1994.

To qualify, a student must be an active member of Lodge 88, Houston (paying local lodge dues) for a period of at least two years and file application during the senior year in high school with definite plans to enter college in the fall of 1995.

Donations have been made to the Lodge 88 Scholarship Fund by Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Fabrygel and by Sidney and Georgie Jurchak in memory of their daughter, Beverly Sommer.

92, Fort Worth Reports on November Meeting

Dear Members and Friends, I guess that we should not try putting things off because it is close to the end of the year. Everything is going fast. There will be lots of parties and celebrations of some kind. Then, there is shopping for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Here at Lodge 92, Fort Worth, it started with the Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 having their annual Thanksgiving dinner at the Country Kitchen on Highway 199 near Ridge Mall area. This was wellattended and there were all types of food to be had. Everyone had a nice time and no one left hungry.

At our November 13 meeting, the Ladies Circle presented President Carl W. Zich $300 for the use of the lodge.

Lodge 92 thanks all of the ladies and the men also for this donation. The President Marie Tesar and Treasurer Evelyn Spacek presented the gift.

December 7 will be the Metroplex Country Music Association Tribute to Senior Citizens. This is for Senior Citizens. Please bring a toy to benefit Toys for Tots. Please bring unwrapped, new toys. They prefer educational toys and no stuffed animals, please. This is a senior citizens party from the Country Music Association on December 7 from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. There will be dancing and refreshments for seniors.

December 11 is the Lodge 92 Christmas party for members. Members will he admitted free and there will he a $6.00 admission charge for all non-members. There will he music by the Wildwood Western Band. Sign-in time is at 1:30 p.m.

From 2 p.m. to 6 p.m , there will be chips and dips with cold cuts. The committee has said that this band does play some waltzes, polkas, and folk dances.

December 18 is the annual Children's Christmas Party from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The children will present a talent program and a Nativity pageant with a visit by Santa Claus. Everyone is invited and there is no charge. Santa will distribute fruit and candy bags at the end of the program. Please bring a gift for your child.

We send our sympathy to the families of the deceased who have died this month. Sister Vlasta Dolkos passed away on November 12, 1994. Sister Dolkos received her 96th certificate paid policy two years ago. She was a longtime member and had been in the nursing home for more than 20 years. Brother Frank Jubala of Pilot Point, Texas, passed away on November 13, 1994. He was also in the nursing home and hospitals.

May they and all of our departed members rest in peace.

155, Austin Reports on November Meeting Lodge

On Sunday, November 6, 1994, a group of our regular faithful older members met at the home of Pat Marek in Austin Texas. All officers were present except the secretary and the reporter.

This was a very important meeting as it was again time to elect officers for the coming year and to make plans for our Christmas social meeting.

Very often you hear how difficult it is to get anyone to agree to serve as an officer or to help. I hear that even the larger lodges have this same problem. It really is a problem for us smaller lodges. Our membership includes more than 100 members but it is a rare occasion if more than eight to fifteen members show up for a regular meeting.

It is not an easy matter to find someone new to agree to serve as an officer.

Generally, we continue to have the same officers as in past years. This is not to say that they have not done a good job.

Actually, the job has been done properly and without complaint. It is just that no one else will accept a position or responsibility.

Our officers for the coming year are much the same as the past year. If anyone is interested in knowing who they are, come join us at the Christmas social and installation of officers. This will be at Steak and Ale, 2211 West Anderson Lane in Austin, Texas, at 2 p.m. on Sunday, December 4, 1994. Our special guest speaker will be Supreme Lodge Vice President Leonard Mikeska.

Our members voted and agreed to sponsor the same charitable organizations as in past years. Being a small lodge with limited funds, we have also agreed that no one will receive any compensation or salary for the coming year. Only actual expenses by lodge officers will be reimbursed.

Several of our members have lost family members or friends in the past month.

Our thoughts and prayers are with them.

Raymond Prasatik, the last surviving charter member of our lodge, is now residing in the Four Seasons Nursing Home here in Austin. We hope this is only temporary and that he gets better and can return home soon. We wish him well.

Door prizes at this month's meeting were Lotto tickets. Winners of the tickets were Marianna Wood, Mina Sponberg, Charles Sponberg, Doris Boriski, and Clarence Boriski. I am sorry to report that none of the tickets were winners.

After the meeting, a nice social visit and refreshments were enjoyed by all.

All members wish to thank our hostess, Pat Marek, for having us in her home for this meeting.

Louis Driska thanked Kathy Fritz and the youth club for helping with the Senior Citizens Day. All members are urged to meet at the lodge on Monday, November 28, 1994, at 6 p.m. to decorate the hall for Christmas.

The December meeting will start at 6 p.m. The installation of officers will be made. Everyone is urged to bring canned goods to the December meeting. These items will be given to the needy.

SPJST State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Frank Klinkovsky and Leo Kocurek of Lodge 172, visit with lodge member Victor Peter, who was hosting a display from the Harris County Czech Heritage Society.

After the meeting, we will have a festive social. We will have fried chicken with members bringing side dishes and desserts.

A date will be decided on which to decorate the hall and the Christmas tree.

183, Arlington 'Reports on November Meeting

Lodge

The meeting of Lodge 183, Arlington was held on Monday, November 14 at 7 p.m.. The meeting was called to order by President Jeanne Roznos. All officers and 33 members were present.

Irene Pustejovsky, Sunshine Chairwoman, had nothing to report but did mention that Dorothy Adamek's brother had a massive stroke and a card would be sent to him. A moment of silence was then held for anyone else that may be sick.

The minutes of the last meeting were read by Secretary Shelby Sill and approved as read, as were all the other reports.

Angeline Stiborek reported that our lodge has a total of 18 new members to date this year. Once again, we would like to extend a warm welcome to all of them.

Jeanne Roznos was awarded a certificate and a check of $50 by Angeline Stiborek for being our Fratemalist of the Year. Dorothy Adamek read us a background of some of Jeanne's personal accomplishments, offices and positions that she has held. Congratulations to our president, Jeanne Roznos.

Johnny Adamek, Trustee Chairman, reported that he, Raymond Mikeska, Rudy Rejcek and Leon Stiborek helped lay the tile in the bar and kitchen area, and these areas look great! A new icemaker was bought this month because the other one could not be fixed. A grease trap was also purchased because the old one was leaking. Johnny also reported that we had a clean-up day on November 5. Johnny, Janie and Rudy Rejcek, and Jeanne, Eugene and Michelle Roznos all helped clear-out and organize the storage room at the lodge.

Our Christmas party for Lodge 183 will be held on December 10, 1994.

Helen Estada (one of our new members) offered to be in charge of the party and there were other members who offered to help her out. There will be a dance and

196, Houston Northwest Reports on October Meeting Lodge

Lodge 196, Houston Northwest held its regular meeting on Sunday, October 16 at Katy VFW Hall in Katy, Texas. In spite of the bad weather, we had a good turnout.

President Robert Castillo opened the meeting and lead the members in the Pledge of Allegiance. He then welcomed the visitors. All lodge officers answered the roll call. Minutes of the last meeting were read and accepted. The financial report was also read and accepted. We voted to accept two new members. We also voted to send our annual gift of $25.00 to the Lutheran Home. We were reminded to donate to the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive. Let's all get behind this effort with our pennies!

During our meeting, a report was given on the land under consideration for purchase for the future lodge sight.

Members voted to purchase two acres with a closing date before the end of October. Sketches and layout for the future building were shown and discussed. President Castillo appointed D.O. Hutto, Marvin Schulz,and Michael Moore as a committee to meet with the builder for more details so we can move forward with this project.

At present, we are soliciting donations of money or goods to be auctioned off to help with furnishings for our new lodge hall. All offers from individuals, lodges, or corporations are welcomed and appreciated. Give us a hand!

December 10 was set for our Christmas party which will be held at the Katy VFW Hall from 5 to 8 p.m. Meat, drinks and paper goods will be furnished by the lodge. Each family is asked to bring a vegetable, salad, or dessert — enough for their family plus two. We are expecting a big turnout and Santa will be present to visit the children and hand out bags of goodies.

President Castillo introduced Brother Brian Vanicek and his mother to the members. Brother Vanicek then spoke to us on the true meaning of SPJST, our responsibility to human problems as well as to our lodge. He challenged us to get on course, get united, plan objectives, be specific with our goals, document our progress and be dedicated as the future is what you make it. He also reported that in 1997, our society will reach the century mark. This visit and speech were wellreceived by all present and we extend you an invitation to visit with us again soon.

After business was completed, we had a fellowship meal and visited with our friends and talked of our future home. If you missed this meeting, you truly missed a good time and an inspiring speech by Brother Vanicek. We hope to see more of our members on December 10.

Lodge 200, Bruceville-Eddy Reports on November Meeting The November 3, 1994, meeting was opened with the Pledge of Allegiance by President Bob Miracle.

The minutes were read by Secretary Linda Roming and they were approved as read.

The first discussion under old business was the 1994SPJST State Volleyball Tournament held at the Eddy High School Gym on November 19, 1994 at 10 a.m.. Like the previous two years, Eddy participated with two teams in the non-spiking division. Also, Lodge 200 had refreshments available for participants and spectators at a small charge.

Everyone was encouraged to come out and enjoy the day and cheer for your favorite teams.

Earl Soudelier read a "thank you" card from Diane Hodde for the lodge scholarship grant to her. She said she would put it to good use.

Lodge members then discussed our December 7, 1994, meeting and Christmas party. We will not only celebrate the birth of Christ, our Savior, but also remember all who fell on Pearl Harbor Day when the Japanese struck with such force and terror. The meeting and party will he held at Allen and Shirley Trigg's house in Eddy, Texas. It is easy to find—the fourth house down on Fourth Street next to Bob and Jane Miracle's house. Just ask anyone in Eddy and they will tell you where you can find Fourth Street. This year will he like last year — bring your favorite finger foods and drinks. The big difference this year is that each person is asked to bring a gift, not over $5.00 in value, and we will exchange them by playing "Snatch". If you are asking what "snatch" is, then come and find out. It is great fun!

Also, this year we decided to continue our Valentine party and dance. Look for further details later.

Harvey LaFlamrne then turned in money from a special fund raiser he had to help the lodge. Way to go, Harvey!

Gene McBride then brought the lodge members up to date on a new ten-year term insurance plan called the "Fountain of Youth". A person can buy $100,000 of term insurance and five years later, you can buy $100,000 more for the same price. for Eddy's Senior Citizen's Thanksgiving dinner. Lodge 200 appreciates its senior citizens and we just want them to know we care and would like to share that with them.

This month's meeting was held at Bob and Jane Miracle's house. Jane was the best hostess, serving up ham, cheese, crackers and popcorn. Jane, we who attended the meeting and showed up just a tad bit too early (like an hour and onehalf) appreciate all the trouble you went to in order to make us feel at home.

Before I close my write-up this month, I want to tell you about one of Lodge 200's young men we are most proud of.

His name is Allen LaFlamme, the son of Vice President Harvey LaFlamme. Allen Allen LaFlamme graduated from Midway High school in Hewitt, Texas, after which he joined the United States Navy. He completed basic training in Chicago, Illinois on October 8, 1994, was stationed in San Diego, California, and completed his training at computer school. AlFen is at home now for a short visit before proceeding to Philadelphia to ship out on the USS Cape Cod Destroyer heading for Saudi Arabia. Congratulations, Allen, on your success and Lodge 200's best wishes go with you as you depart to serve your country.

Corpus Christi Circle of Women Reports on November Meeting Twenty-two members and three guests met on November 3 at Sokol Hall. Our guests were Jean Hess, Louise Mokry, and Father George Harris.

One of our missing members was Rose Huff who is in Doctors Regional Medical Center recovering from a hairline fracture of the pelvis. Rose is hoping to go home soon and we all wish her a speedy recovery We signed a get-well card for her which was hand-delivered by Lil Hruska following our meeting. Betty Jurica reported visiting Rose and taking her some mums from our Krouzek. She also took flowers to Carrie Veselka who was in the same hospital after undergoing surgery. Carrie was able to be with us at our meeting.

Mattie Netek was out-of-town for a

family reunion and Mary, Milly and Jerry Elzner had not yet returned from the Czech Republic. I am happy to report that the Elzners returned safely on the evening of our meeting. They were sorely missed during their extended stay in Europe.

A moment of silence was observed in memory of Chas. Kosarek who passed away on October 28. We voted to make a donation to Spohn Hospice in his memory. A sympathy card was signed by all of us to be sent to Frances. Our hearts go out to her.

Donations were received in memory of Chas. Kosarek from Norma Baker, Lil Hruska, Betty Jurica, Marcellina Mokry, Anna Marie Moss, Anita Regmund and Annie Regmund. Donations were also received in memory of Bill Regmund from Lil Hruska, Betty Jurica and A.M. Moss and in memory of Anne Spencer from her niece Becky Elzner Jackson and Betty Jurica.

A $100 donation was made to Sokol Corpus Christi and it was decided a monthly donation covering the cost of the use of the hall will be made in the future.

We wish to thank the officers and board of directors of Sokol Corpus Christi for their support of our organization without which our Krouzek would not exist.

A S50 donation for turkey and groceries to be bought by thrifty shoppers Betty Jurica and Kathy Marek for the Women's Shelter was voted on. Each member is also asked to bring a gift for a woman or child and any additional items they desire. These items will he given to the Women's Shelter for Christmas.

Betty Jurica brought a picture of their new facility for our scrapbook. It is certainly a big improvement over their old home. Thanks, Betty.

Betty Elzner served as secretary in

Milly Elzner's absence. She reported on plans for our December luncheon, and members planning to attend who have not already paid should call her at 8827591. Betty also took names of those wishing to go to San Antonio to view the Christmas lights on the River Walk.

There were nine door prizes including two beautiful crocheted scarfs made by Norma Baker and a Czech cut glass bud vase donated by Milly Elzner. We also had a special drawing for two poinsettia trivets, which are perfect for the holidays.

Happy birthday was sung to Becky Elzner, Lillie Hayek, Jennifer Marek and Lottie Ramey in California. Happy Birthday, ladies.

Circle of Czech Women Reports on November Meeting Dallas

Our November meeting was called to order by President Bertha Podhraskv.

Faye Wright led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Bertha welcomed 35 members and 10 men.

Correspondence, read by Evelyn Trojacek, included a "thank you" from Bryan House for the donation in the red sox.

Marie Lattner of the Sunshine Committee sent a g et-well card to Josephine Kankrlik.

Gil Baca Preserves a Bit of History in Fayetteville Musical Emporium A unique piece of ethnic history has been revived in Fayetteville, Texas.

The historic Baca/Schramm Confectionery and Saloon will open its doors as a musical emporium on November 25, 26, and 27. Some of the most versatile musicians in the country will be featured every Friday and Saturday nights. The establishment is located "on the square" in downtown Fayetteville, Texas.

Gil Baca, who is from Fayetteville, recently purchased the Baca/Schramm Confectionery and Saloon. Gil, who is a member of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston, will feature the "Baca Beat" that so many have learned to appreciate.

As Gil puts it, "This music makes the `old' feel young and the 'not-so-old' become addicted to the old-time polkas and waltzes."

Gil's career began when he was nine years old, playing with his famous father Ray Baca, remembered for his unique style on the "Baca Dulcimer," His grandfather, Frank Baca, from Czechoslovakia, was instrumental in introducing Czech music to Texas and was a pioneer in the development of the first Czech band in Texas.

Gil's lust for music never quit. He played all over the United States with country and western artist Hank Thompson and was even featured on the Grand 01' Opry in Nashville. He also played rock n' roll music for many years and has been featured b y Texas Monthly magazine as one ot.

Gil's musical credits are many and include performances for a presidential inaugural ball, the American Folk Festival in Washington, D.C.,Texas Folk Life Festival and the Smithsonian Institute. His hand also received a special invitation to play for three weeks in Czechoslovakia as guests of the Prague Institute of Culture.

Gil's Musical Emporium in Fayetteville has not changed much since the days of its original owner, Gil's grandmother, Marie Baca. Marie, who was the wife of Frank Baca, was the sole proprietor in the early 1900s. The establishment has remained in the family ever since. The distressed wood walls are covered with photographs and awards highlighting the accomplishments and music of the Baca family.

The famous mahogany bar with its marble top, along with the classic stained glass cabinets and beveled mirrors also serves to take visitors back a step in time.

The deadline for sending money ($5.75 per person) is November 23, 1994. Send the money to Viki Kohn. The decorating committee, Ida Fehmer, Evelyn and Jo Cechan and Bertha Podhrasky, will decorate on November 30 at 8 p.m. We will need help in setting up the tables. If you can come, it will he appreciated.

We will have a photographer at the Christmas party to take a group picture of the members. This picture will be used for our 60th anniversary on April 2, 1995. So we hope everyone will make an effort to be there. Be sure to be there by 10 a.m. sharp because the photographer will not wait for late comers. You may order and pay for the picture at the Christmas Party. The price is $10 for an 8 x 10 picture.

The Czech Culture Society will meet on November 28 at Sokol.

The Fraternal Society will meet on November 14 at SPJST. Sister City of Brno will not meet until January or February of 1995.

Congratulations to Martha and Charlie Kocian on celebrating their 60th anniversary and to Vicki and Jerry Kohn on celebrating their 48th anniversary.

The members voted to make contributions to the Veterans Hospital Auxiliary Gift Shop in memory of Marie Tobemey, Ronald McDonald House and Homeplace for Battered Women.

Each member is asked to bring $1.00 in an envelope with your name on it instead of exchanging presents. This will be donated to Sister City of Bmo. We also voted to give $50.00 to Sokol for the Christmas party on December 18, 1994. This year, the annual Christmas party will be combined with WFLA, Sokol, and Krouzek. The building will open at 11 a.m. Happy hour will be from 12 noon to 1 p.m. Dinner will be served from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. The program and

Plants were donated by Jo Cechan and the money went into the Treasury.

Mrs. Marie Fitz donated a doll for the Krouzek to dress in a kroj. Mrs. Fitz says she is going to move to California to be close to her son next year and she wanted us to remember her. Bertha and the members will make the kroj.

Money for materials for the kroj was made by Lydia Alholm and Mrs. Fitz.

Circle of Fort Worth Reports on Annual Luncheon Ladies

Members of the Ladies Circle of Fort Worth had their annual luncheon outing at the Old Country Buffet located in Ridgmar Square.

Fifty-nine members were present to enjoy the large variety of food and visit with each other. "Happy Birthday" was sung to Elma Anderson, Flora Koci, Merel Kovar, Lillie McCillan, Victoria Murphy, Laura Posival, Ann Schneider, Shirley Zich and Marsha Tweed. Some of the members returned to the hall to enjoy games until 2 p.m.

As you may recall, our Supreme Lodge, when they met in Temple in September, endorsed the concept of an "SPJST Member Services Directory," to be introduced early in 1995. The directory will be printed as a part of a special edition of the Vestnik.

As its name suggests, the SPJST Member Services Directory will be a listing of SPJST members who are in positions to provide various products and services for other SPJST members—kind of like our own yellow pages. There will be no charge for directory listings and the only prerequisite is that you are an SPJST member.

The directory will make every attempt to include the broadest range of service providers—everything from accountants, auto mechanics and caterers to musicians, beauticians and attorneys. This also applies to members who deliver home health care or companion care to

senior citizens and/or childcare services.

Part-time business owners and those who produce seasonal commodities—ranging from farm produce to firewood—are also encouraged to participate. Likewise, those members who operate sideline businesses—everything from Amway to Tupperware are encouraged to participate. The whole concept is based on the idea of "members helping members."

Only those listings which are deemed "questionable" or those which promote life insurance or other financial products available through the SPJST, will not be printed in the directory.

Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club to Sponsor Kitchen at Arts and Crafts Show Dear Members and Friends, On Saturday, November 26, Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club will sponsor the kitchen at the Fourth Annual "Home for the Holidays" Arts and Crafts Show at the Civic Center in Rogers from 8 a.m to 5 p.m.

24, Cyclone Youth Club Reports on November Meeting Lodge

Dear Readers, The November meeting of Lodge 24, Cyclone was held on November 13, 1994.

The meeting was called to order by President Danny Baker. Flag Bearer Scott Hudson led the Pledge of Allegiance and Club Motto.

Secretary Jennifer Ashcraft called the roll. There were 17 members present and ten adults. Two new members were introduced. They are Steven Carpenter and Shelly Gerich. Welcome to our growing club. Brittany and Trent Coots and Jimmy Baker were introduced as our guests.

The minutes were read and approved.

Treasurer Mark Macek gave the treasurer's report.

On Saturday, November 26, we will be serving sack lunches and doughnuts at the annual Rogers Arts and Crafts Show from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. This will be our final fund raiser for 1994. Our youth leader, Melanie Zavodny, will purchase all of the food and supplies so no donations will be needed. We will only need helpers for this event.

We also discussed the 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive. Youth club members were encouraged to donate for this worthy cause.

Our youth leader thanked all the youth club members, parents, and grandparents who helped make our bake sale at the County-Wide Sale Day on November 12 a big success.

Temple Christmas Parade Our y outh club will have a float in the Temple Christmas Parade on Monday, December 5. A committee will get together and start preparations. All youth members are encouraged to be a part of this fun event. Lodge 24's King Danny Baker and Duke Scott Hudson will represent District Two in the parade.

Our Christmas charity project will be a

canned food drive. Each member may contribute their canned goods at our Christmas party and program on Sunday, December 11. The canned goods will be donated to a charitable group.

Youth Leader Melanie Zavodny encourages all youth members to participate in the Christmas program on Sunday,

Over the next two months, the Vestnik will publish the prize-winning recipes submitted by the winners of the 1994 State SPJST Youth Achievement Day Foods Competition. This week's recipes represent the 9 - 11 Age Group. We hope that you enjoy them.

Fresh Fruit Pizza Rachel Dluhos First Place, Ages 9-11 Lodge 30, Talton 1 package sugar cookie mix, prepared 8 ounces cream cheese, softened 8 ounces whipped topping 1 cup sliced strawberries 1/2 orange, cut into sections 1 banana, sliced 1 kiwi fruit, sliced 1/2 cup blueberries 1/2 cup sugar 1 tablespoon cornstarch 1/2 cup orange juice 1/4 cup water 1 tablespoon lemon juice Salt to taste Line 10-inch pizza pan with cookie dough. Bake at 375 degrees for 10 minutes or until light brown. Remove to wire rack to cool. Combine cream cheese and whipped topping in bowl; mix well. Spread over baked layer.

Arrange fruit in decorative pattern over cream cheese layer. Combine sugar, cornstarch, orange juice, water, lemon juice, and salt in saucepan; mix well.

Boil for one minute, stirring constantly. Spoon over fruit. Chill until set.

Lemon Cheese Braid Tonya Spanhel Second Place, Ages 9-11 Lodge 24, Cyclone 1 package (1/4 ounce) active dry yeast 3 tablespoons warm water 1/4 cup sugar 1/3 cup milk 1/4 cup margarine melted 2 eggs 1/2 teaspoon salt 3 to 3 1/2 cups flour Filling 2 packages (one 8-ounce, one 3-ounce cream cheese, softened 1/2 cup sugar 1 egg 1 teaspoon grated lemon peel icing 12 cup confectioners sugar 2 to 3 teaspoons milk 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

In a large mixing bowl, mix yeast, sugar, salt, and 1 and 1/2 cups flour.

Mix well. Heat water, milk, and margarine to 115 degrees. Pour over dry ingredients. Mix well. Add eggs, one at a time and mix well. Add the remaining flour, mix well with wooden spoon. Knead dough on lightly floured surface. Put it in a large bowl and cover. Let it rise for about 1 1/2 hours.

Meanwhile, beat filling in a small mixing bowl, mix all ingredients until fluffy. Set aside. Punch dough down.

On a floured surface, roll into a 14inch by 12-inch rectangle. Place on a greased baking sheet. Spread filling down center. On each long side cut one-inch stripes, three-inches into center. Start at one side. Fold alternating stripes at an angle across filling. Seal end. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes.

Bake at 375 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes or until golden brown. Cool.

Combine icing ingredients and drizzle over bread.

Yield: 12-14 servings.

Dear Readers, District Three recently held our fall meeting at Lodge 66, Waco in Elm Mon on October 23. It was a good meeting and the food was great.

In the youth club meeting, we decided that our overnight Christmas Party will be on Friday, December 2 at Lodge 84, Dallas and we will play cops and robbers!

Remember to bring a gift worth $5.00.

The next day, on Saturday, December 3, we will go to Holiday-in-the Park at Six Flags.

After the youth meeting, all of the youth participated in a pumpkin carving contest. All of the pumpkins looked great and it looked like everyone had fun. In the youth meeting, we signed a card thanking HEB store for donating all of the pumpkins. Hope everyone enjoyed it.

Nutty White Chunk Cookies Collette Kenney Third Place, Ages 9-11 Lodge 84, Dallas 2 1/4 cups flour 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 cup light brown sugar 1/2 cup white sugar 3/4 cup butter (soft) 2 eggs 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 cup chopped pecans 1 1/2 cup white chocolate bar, chopped Preheat oven to 300 degrees. In a bowl, combine flour, soda, and salt.

Mix well. Set aside.

In a bowl with electric mixer, blend sugars at medium speed. Add butter and mix to form a grainy paste, scraping howl down the sides. Add eggs and vanilla, beat at medium speed until fluffy. Add flour mixture, pecans (chocolate, blend at low speed, until just combined.

Drop by tablespoon onto ungreased cookie sheets, 2 inches apart. Bake 20-22 minutes. Cool.
