Twenty-two qualify for Running Back Club

SPJST salutes October Top Producers We salute and congratulate our 22 top producing sales representatives qualifying for the Running Back Club during October. Special recognition is given to Martha Broz as the top insurance producer for October. Let us also highlight our Group Leaders' Circle representatives: June Smesny, Martha Durham, and Sidon Turn is.

Our production for October was 89 applications for more than $1.7 million of insurance. Year-to-date production is 988 applications for more than $24.3 million of insurance.

Thanks to the sales representatives in District Four and Six for achieving their insurance quotas. We hope that other districts will still be successful in meeting their insurance and membership quotas.

Many of our lodges are actively pursuing an incentive award under our local lodge incentive program. This program was designed by the Supreme Lodge to

encourage lodges to increase fraternal activity and enroll more new members.

In addition to receiving recognition, winning lodges get cash awards which can be used to fund an event to celebrate the achievement. If your lodge is lacking new members to qualify for an award, we encourage membership involvement in giving sales leads and referrals to your representatives.

Now, I want to share some exciting information with you. We are proud to unveil an exciting new product which may well be the best product of its type.

It is our new MODTERM, a 10-year, renewable and convertible term with an age enhancement option. The current indeterminate premiums are highly competitive and provide outstanding value for each dollar of cost. Within certain limitations, the product allows the insured to double the amount of coverage between the second and ninth year at the original

issue age of the certificate.

The MODTERM allows families or business individuals to purchase an adequate amount of affordable coverage to meet their temporary needs.

Lodge Activities Enrich Community Close to Home ...

I stayed close to home this weekend as my home lodge, Lodge 24, Cyclone, hosted its first-ever Barbecue Cook-Off and semi-annual Countywide Sale Day. Typically I don't use this column to write about what goes on at Lodge 24, but in this case, I'll make an exception. It was a good example of what can go right when people work together.

Hats off to all of the good people who worked so hard to make the day a success-notably Cook-off Chairman Louise Zavodny and Sale Day Chairman Sherry Tyroch. A total of 25 vendors set up shop inside of Flag Hall along with 20 cooking teams outdoors. The result was an event that was as good for the lodge as it was fun for the community.

Voluntary action and participation is important to a lot of people. It is, in fact, the possibility of fellowship, that gets people involved in local lodges. Fraternal projects like the cook-off and sale day provide members with the opportunity to enrich the social interaction of the community. When it works, it is a very satisfying feeling. This past Saturday's sale, for instance, attracted a wide variety of vendors, selling everything from garage sale-type items to high-quality arts and craft creations. The cook-off, on the other hand, attracted a lot of good-natured folks who love to cook.

The point is, not only did it attract SPJST members, it also provided many nonmembers with a glimpse of what our Society has to offer.

Lodge events like Lodge 24's CookOff and Sale Day may not work in every corner of the state; however, it serves as another good example of what can happen when preparation meets opportunity.

It's a formula that can work for each of us. For each of us as individuals and for us collectively-as lodges and as a Society. ***

Many lodges will be electing 1995 lodge officers this month. Those elected will shoulder a great responsibility in that they will be the leaders and the motivators of their lodges and of our fraternal society. In large part, it is they who will set lodge priorities, objectives and policies for the coming year.

Congratulations and best wishes to all of our newly elected lodge officers and committee chairmen. The future of our lodges-and indeed, the SPJST-rests in large part on their ability to respond to the changing financial and fraternal needs of our members and the communities in which we live. *** Volleyball Match This Saturday All volleyball players and fans, take notice: The SPJST State Volleyball Tournament will be this Saturday, November 19, at the Bruceville-Eddy High gymnasiums.

The Bruceville-Eddy High School is located about 17 miles north of Temple, just off of Interstate 35.

Prizes for the 1994 tournament will be awarded in both "Spiking" and "Non-Spiking" categories.

Living Up to Our Potential I appreciate the wisdom of our SPJST founding fathers. They established an organization that provided as much for the future as it did the present. By providing life insurance as a dominant feature, they established a valuable financial service for members. At the same time, they recognized the value of fraternalism.

That explains our long history and devotion to projects related to family, community and country.

Our early leaders believed that financial security and fraternalism were important. For the SPJST to live up to the promise of its heritage, we must thoughtfully address the changing needs of our members and the communities in which they live.

SPJST State Volleyball Tournament This Saturday in Bruceville-Eddy

The Supreme Lodge SPJST 520 North Main Street • Temple, Texas

The State Volleyball Tournament will be held this Saturday, November 19 at the Bruceville-Eddy High School gyms.

Bruceville-Eddy is located about 17 miles north of Temple on Interstate 35.

The map below provides directions. If you are coming from the north on 1-35, take exit 318A. Off the access road, take Eagle Drive right to the high school about one-quarter mile. If you are coming from the south, take exit 315. Take a left over 1-35 and an immediate right on the two-way access road. Go about onequarter of a mile and take Wilcox Street to the high school.

The playoffs will begin at 10 a.m. We will play at two gyms. The gyms are located one block apart. The spiking

teams will play at the old gym and the non-spiking teams will play at the new gym.

Everyone is invited. There is no charge and players and spectators are welcome. Members, come support your lodge players.

We have ten teams signed up. We hope that they will all show up. That will be a nice increase over last year.

Sandwiches will be sold by SPJST Lodge 200, Bruceville-Eddy members.

We hope to see you all on Saturday, November 19 at Bruceville-Eddy.

District Five Reports on Successful Fall Meeting Dear SPJST District Five Members, The SPJST District Five Fall Meeting and Family Day was held September 18, 1994. The meeting was hosted by Lodge 65 and 91 at Crosby American Legion Hall in Crosby, Texas.

We want to thank everyone who. attended to make this day a great success.

We want to thank the youth and Brother Fred Buri for the presentation of the colors and also for singing the National Anthem.

We want to thank Helen Hegwood for singing the Czech National Anthem.

Brother Alvin Franta gave a warm welcome to everyone. Thank you, Brother Franta.

A short meeting was held and Brother Lonnie Lostak was elected again to be the SPJST Nursing Home Director for Home No. 2 in Needville, Texas. Brother Lostak is doing a great job. Thank you, Brother Lostak.

We want to thank the Supreme Lodge Finanical Secretary Brother Jerry Mikulas and Brother Brian Vanicek, editor of the Vestnik for taking time out to come to our District Five Fun Day. Other guests were Mildred Sansford and Wilbur Janecek.

Brother Mikulas reported that the interest rates went up on annuities and they have a good rate for mortgages. So you can build new homes or buy land.

Brother Vanicek explained the SPJST Member Services Directory with the listings of all SPJST sales representatives and businesses.

Sister Marie Stayton welcomed everyone and introduced her royalty: King Jason Hermis and Duke Mike Schleider, and Queen Misty Sotliff and Duchess Amanda Hermis, all of Lodge 142.

Sister Marie announced that there were many booths for the young people to make money. Christmas ornament contest winners were : Ages 6 - 8 First Place—Jason Castillo (sea shell) of Lodge 196 Ages 9-11 First Place—Mark Janecek (peanut reindeer), Lodge 196 Ages 12-14 First Place—Karen Bender (pinecones) Lodge 88

Ages 15-17 First Place—John Buri (hanging Santa), Lodge 142.

The adults contests' winners were: Pastry—First Place, Lorenda Baldwin, Lodge 139; Handicrafts—First Place, Lillie Mae Peter (handpainted skirt, vest, and blouse), Lodge 172; and Needlework—First place, Dottie Watkins (cow), Lodge 172.

The horseshoe contest was won by Vaylin Matthews and Slick Ordener.

Door prizes were donated by Evelyn Mikeska (pears); Alvin Franta (flashlight); Lodge 139 (SPJST cap and tissue holder); Erlene Mechalsky of Lodge 91 (SPJST jacket); Lodge 172 ($50.00 cash); SPJST Supreme Lodge Home Office (miscellaneous supplies—caps, dominoes, tote bag); Lillie Mae Peter (Czech decorated Easter egg); Lodge 88 Youth Club (wall wreath with flowers); Mary Zucka of Lodge 172 (five-piece mixing bowl set); Dorothy and Larry Pflughaupt of Lodge 88 (two pie plates); Lodge 139 (cap and toilet paper holder); Lodge 88 ($50.00 cash); Lodge 142 ($10.00 cash); and Lorenda Baldwin (tissue holder). Many more gifts were donated but no names were listed.

It was announced that the District Five cookbooks will be ready for sale at Lodge 88's Czech Day on October 30.

We had a cake auction and it was a great success.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:25 p.m. There was a delicious meal prepared for us. The meal consisted of roast beef and all the wonderful dishes and desserts. Everyone enjoyed the refreshments.

Dear Readers, As the holiday season is approaching, this is a reminder to our members, workers, and friends that we will be holding our lodge Christmas party on Sunday, December 4.

At 1 p.m., we will hold the lodge meeting and election of officers. At 2 p.m., we are inviting our lodge members and all the workers who have helped throughout the year at any time and place to a thank-you party and Christmas party.

We will have free games and free drinks.

To those who want to play dominoes or taroky, get your partners ready. The youth club will be selling raffle tickets on Christmas items.

At 5 p.m., we will have a turkey and dressing supper with all the trimmings.

After supper, the youth will have a short program and then, Santa will make his appearance.

With the good attendance of all our workers at the workers party at Heitmiller's Family Steakhouse, we hope all of you will be able to attend this party.

20, Granger Tarok Tournament Set for December 3 Lodge

The membership of Lodge 20, Granger would like to extend an invitation to members and friends to come join the fun game of taroks.

The Third Annual Tarok Tournament of Lodge 20, Granger will be held at the SPJST Hall on December 3, 1994, beginning at 9 a.m. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. The hall is located two blocks west of the Highway 95 turn-off at the blinking light in Granger.

Everyone is invited and membership is not required. The entry fee is $15.00 and includes snacks, coffee, a noon meal, prizes, and door prizes. Six one-hour rounds are scheduled.

88, Houston Encourages Students to Apply for 1995 Lodge Scholarships Lodge

Once again, Lodge 88, Houston will be awarding scholarships for the 1995 school year. Application forms can now be picked up at the Lodge 88 office at 1435 Beall Street and returned to the office before December 31, 1994.

To qualify, a student must be an active member of Lodge 88, Houston (paying local lodge dues) for a period of at least two years and file application during the senior year in high school with definite plans to enter college in the fall of 1995.

Donations have been made to the Lodge 88 Scholarship Fund by Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Fabrygel and by Sidney and Georgie Jurchak in memory of their daughter, Beverly Sommer.

88, Houston Members Share Travel Experiences Lodge

The Henry Kites recently took a beautiful trip—and I agree with them, everyone should see the fantastic areas they visited.

This article was written by their son.

—Pearl Hanka On Monday morning, we left for the trip to two national forests in California.

By early afternoon, we were at Sequoia National Forest, home of the largest living thing in the world, a huge sequoia tree named after General Sherman. Also, in this national forest are beautiful mountains, deep gorges, and huge groves of Sequoia trees that exist no where else in the world.

From Sequoia, we drove to Fresno, California, and spent the night in order to be able to visit Yosemite National Park on Tuesday. Yosemite National Park is awesome in its size and scenery. It is a long drive up twisting mountain roads, through redwood forests, and you can even see snow at the 10,000 foot level.

Yosemite is loaded with bears, deer and other protected species.

Lodge 88, Houston FAC Coordinates Assistance for Flood Victims Our SPJST has been busy extending a helping hand to the 1994 flood victims in Houston. Homer Alexander, Lodge 88's Fraternal Activities Coordinator, was ready and willing to help. On Friday, October 21, he went to the San Jacinto Flood Relief Center and gave clothing to help the victims who lost all of their belongings in the flood waters during the week.

Yes, Homer is a busy man. He has many, many on-going fraternal activities to his credit. Among them is the 55Alive Defensive Driving course.

Since 1988, Homer has organized an average of seven classes per year at Lodge 88.

The instructor, Joe Rasel, is Assistant State Coordinator of the 55Alive/Mature Driving Program and has been featured on two local television networks for his work in this field.

This course is offered to the public, age 50 and older at quite a savings.

We are all very proud of the outOn Wednesday, we woke up in San Francisco. We stayed within driving distance of Fisherman's Wharf and were able to see hundreds of sea lions that sun bathe in the harbor at Pier 39. We took a tour of Chinatown, drove down the most crooked street in the world (Lombard Street) and took a sightseeing tour of Sausalito, California, where a lot of people live on houseboats year round. We were blessed that the weather was beautiful and the view of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and the winding streets and cable cars in San Francisco was unhindered.

On Thursday, we spent a good part of the day visiting the aquarium in Monterey. From there, we drove to Carmel, and through the beautiful 17mile drive that winds through Pebble Beach. From that point the scenery remains indescribable. The blue skies, crashing surf on Rocky Shores, and the winding mountain roads through Big Sur, and all the way down the coast are something everyone should experience in their lifetime.

After a long drive through the unbelievable traffic in Los Angeles, we arrived once more in the peace and tranquility of San Bernadino. On Saturday, the flight home to Houston was both anticipated and regretted. It was good to be home, but there is so much more to be seen.

rtt A personal note was written to me by Mrs. Adele Kite. It read, " Henry and I went to visit our daughter and son-in-law, Leo and Carolyn Lauer; on September 16, 1994, and came back to Houston on September 24. On Saturday, they took us up to San Bernadino Mountains and went to the mass at the church in the mountains. The back of the church was all glass and we could see a beautiful statue of the Blessed Virgin on the mountain."

Slavonic Mutual Fire Insurance Association to Meet November 20 Dear Members, Sunday, November 20 is the date of the next meeting of Slavonic Mutual Fire Insurance Chapter 9. The meeting will be held at the Sokol Athletics Center at 2 p.m.

This is an important meeting as officers for the coming year will be elected as well as delegates to the convention which will be held next summer.

The officers will give their reports of business that has been transacted since the last meeting and anything else that might pertain to our Chapter.

As usual, there will be a meal served after the meeting. The meal will be furnished by the chapter. The ladies are asked to please bring pastries, and there is always a big selection. Everything is always so good, too.

Remember there are three drawings for $25 each to three lucky members whose names are drawn, but you must be present to win.

The holidays will be here before long as is evident in the stores. Some of us think it is much too soon but not the merchants who run the stores. They seem to try to outdo one another!

I just heard a couple of days ago that Esta Belle Hubenak fell and broke her arm. Our Vice President Roy Alholm had surgery a while back and he is well on the road to recovery. Just last night, we heard that Dr. Ben Grill of Seymour passed away on November 4. Dr. Grill was a past Director of the Slavonic Mutual Fire Insurance. Our deepest sympathy is extended to his family.

S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1 in Taylor Celebrates Halloween S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1 recently celebrated Halloween with a special costume and decorated wheelchair party. The staff and residents dressed to fit the occasion. Mr. Woody Richards, administrator, introduced all of the costume contestants as they modeled their outfits and wheelchairs in the dining room. The contest judges were Demetra Shiller, Frances Minikus, and Beth Frazier.

Conc to Valley Czech Heritage Society to Meet November 20 The Runnels, Conch째, and Tom Green Counties Czech Heritage Society will meet on Sunday, November 20, 1994 in the SPJST Hall in Rowena. A noon meal will be served at 1 p.m. and the meeting will begin at 2:30 p.m.

Helen Pfluger of Eldorado will give the program on her recent trip to the Czech Republic. She and her husband, Charles, left Texas on October 3 and returned home on October 20. They rented a car and traveled over the Republic to he able to see the countryside and the cities. They also visited relatives. Mrs. Pfluger has been studying Czech since her visit there last year, and she has progressed remarkable well. She can read and write and speak well enough to he understood. She will show video tapes of all of the wonderful palaces and churches of the mystical city of Prague and all the places they visited.

The last meeting of the Concho Valley Czech Heritage Society was held September 18.

President Louis Kokes brought the meeting to order with a Pledge of Allegiance to the American flag in English and in Czech.

The guest who came the longest dis tance was George C. Mraz of Hermleigh, Texas.

Secretary Nancy Day read the minutes of the last meeting which were approved as read.

Since December is full of holiday parties, members voted to have our Christmas dinner and Thanksgiving party on Sunday, November 20. The Society will furnish a turkey and a ham for the meat dish. Vice President David Blazek volunteered to smoke the meat.

Members are asked to bring the side dishes - vegetables, salads, and desserts.

There will be an election of officers and directors.

Local and state dues will be collected.

Because of the distance, no one from our society attended the State Czech Heritage Society meeting in Victoria, Texas.

Mr. Kostohryz Taylor was scheduled to give the program. However, he was unable to come because of his scheduled flight to the Czech Republic. Therefore, David Blazek brought us a program on the immigration of Czechs to Texas, where they settled and why. He had large maps and graphs to illustrate the settlements, making it interesting and informative.

In Memoriam In :Aemory of Frar.Lie Ovesny Mr. Frankie Ovesny, 68, of Texas City, died Monday, October 31, 1994, at Clear Lake Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 2, 1994, at Emken-Linton's Chapel with the Rev. John B. Cullen officiating. Burial followed at Forest Park East in League City.

Mr. Ovesny was horn December 29, 1925, in Taylor, Texas. He retired as an operator from Monsanto after 31 years of service. He was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor.

Survivors include his wife, Louise Ovesny of Texas City; a son, Thomas Ovesny of Denton; a daughter, Pam Lamson-Scribner of Charleston, South Caroline; a sister, Anna Lee Downing of San Antonio; and four grandchildren.

ALBERT C. "AL" NOVOSAD, who died on November 1, 1994, at the age of 74. Funeral services were held on Thursday, November 3 at 10 a.m. at the Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan.

The Rev. Dale Wells, pastor of Wheelock Baptist Church, officiated.

Burial was in the Wheelock Cemetery.

Brother Novosad was born in Edge.

He graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in 1938, where he was a member of the National Honor Society and president of the district chapter of Future Farmers of America. He earned a bachelor's degree in agronomy from Texas A&M University in 1947. He received a master's degree in agronomy from Texas A&M in 1954, He graduated with honors and was a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.

He retired from Texas A&M in 1980 after 32 years with the Texas Agriculture Experiment Station and Agriculture Extension Service. He worked closely with county agents on educational programs dealing with pasture turf improvement. He was instrumental in initiating many statewide programs involving hay, silage, and forage testing. He was awarded the Solid and Crop Science Department Award in 1980 for career accomplishments. He was a member of the Alpha Zeta chapter of Epsilon Sigma Phi, a national extension fraternity. Prior to moving to College Station, he worked as a county extension agent in Smith and Bowie Counties. He also served in World War II, with the U.S. Army Air Corps.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Novosad of Lubbock; one daughter, ane Sandlin of Dallas; one brother, W.C. "Bill" Novosad of Normangee; two sisters, Millie Kopetsky of Wheelock and Mavis Stocker of Bryan; and one grandchild.

May our departed brother rest in peace.

PHILLIP DEWAYNE MORRIS, who died Friday, October 28, 1994, in a Milam County vehicle accident at the age of 48.

Brother Morris was born in Taylor to Ira Ray and Claudia Hall Morris. He lived in Holland most of his life. He was an electrician at Britt Rice Electric in Bryan. He married Imogene Persky on June 11, 1967.

Survivors are his wife, Imogene Morris of Holland; his mother, Claudia Morris of Holland; two daughters, Kristi Dague of Houston and Deborah Morris of Holland; and a brother, Jackie Morris of Houston.

Graveside services for Brother Morris were at 2 p.m. Monday, October 31 at St. John Lutheran Cemetery with the Rev. Clarence Rose officiating.

WALTER F. PAIRETT, SR. age 64 of Houston.

Born in Taylor to S. Floyd Pairett and Irene Pythian Pairett, he married Billie Jeane Beckett on October 16, 1965, in Temple. Brother Pairett lived in Houston for 18 years and was a former resident of Little River. A member of Taylor First Baptist Church, he served in the U.S. Navy for five years and was a sales representative for the Pinkerton Tobacco Company in Virginia.

Survivors are his wife, Billie Jeane Pairett of Houston; three sons, J. Douglas Pairett of Wichita Falls, Walter Floyd Pairett, Jr. of Mesquite and Robert Nelson Pairett of Temple; a daughter, Amy Irene Powell of Houston; his mother, Irene Pairett of Vidor; a brother, Gene Pairett of Vidor; four stepsons; two stepdaughters; five grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and 18 step-grandchildren.

Services for Brother Pairett were at 10 a.m. on Friday, October 28, 1994, at Sheffield Funeral Home in Temple with the Rev. Danny Crosby officiating.

Burial was in Wilson Valley Cemetery in Little River.

Memorials may be made to the Lighthouse For The Blind, care of Waco Founders Lions Club, 1716 North 42nd Street, Waco, Texas, or to the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

MINNIE KUBITZA, who died on October 30, 1994, at the age of 98 at her son's home.

Services were held on November 1 at Littlepage Funeral Home Chapel in Mart with the Rev. John Clifford officiating.

Burial was at the SPJST Pavelka Cemetery.

Mrs. Kubitza was born on May 7, 1896, in West. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 35, Elk. She married Adolph Kubitza on November 24, 1914.

He preceded her in death on September 10, 1975. Minnie had lived at her son's home for the past eleven years.

Survivors include two sons, Fred Kubitza of Mart and Robert Kubitza of Axtell; a daughter, Rosilie Bartos of Abbott; 17 grandchildren; -27 great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; and one great-great-grandchild.

Pallbearers were Fred Kubitza, Jr., Billy Kubitza, Richard Kubitza, Walter Kubitza,Gary Kubitza, and Larry Bartos.

Czech Day was held in Dallas for the fifty-fourth year at the State Fair of Texas on Sunday, October 16, 1994.

Program highlights were as follows: 1 Program chairman was James Macik, who is the President of the American Czechoslovak Day Program. He was assisted by George Reznik, Larry Laznovsky, Debbie Macik, Ida Schulz, Sandra Schulz, Mildred and Calvin Chervenka, plus a host of volunteers. * I- Participating societies and fraternals included the following eleven organizations: KJT, KJZT, RVOS, SPJST, SVPS, WFLA, American SOKOL Organization, Catholic Club, Circle of Czech Women, the Catholic Czech Club Historical Society, and the Dallas/Brno Sister Cities Organization.

VVV * Master of Ceremonies was Larry Laznovsky. The American and Czech national anthems were sung by John Mensik. Jerry Milan gave a report on the 1994 SOKOL Slet which was held recently in Prague, the Czech Republic.

VV* I Cyrill (Sid) Pokladnik, the director of the 25-member Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra performed their delightful music during the morning and afternoon.

The program included a SOKOL presentation; Czech songs and dance; SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas Tots; Ceska Beseda; Beseda dancers; Czech Fraternal Society singers accompanied by the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra; Czech promenade of Czech kroj (national dress), which was coordinated by Anne Zvolanek; Czech songs by the Dallas Czech Singers and directed by Bob Liska; and youth club presentation by the WFLA Society No. 401 and others. * Melanie Zavodny, the 1994-95 Miss Texas Czech adQueen, dressed the audience. I- The Travis/Williamson County Czech Heritage Society chartered a bus from Austin for the event. Included in the group were Travis/Williamson County Czech Heritage Presiden Dorothy Bohac; State Czech Heritage President Carolyn Meiners; KJT District President Ted Vitek and Sara; Dr. Helena Confortiova, who is a Czech professor at the University of Texas a Austin and six of her native Czech students who are now studying at the University of Texas at Austin. te 1 The Sulak Brothers Bank of Ennis, Texas, concluded the social program with their Czech music.

She scans the newspaper in delight, pleased that her efforts were not unsatisfied.

Someone must actually design the pages of a newspaper and also word advertisements. The East Texas Journal bears Paula Jean Crover's unique touch.

This past summer, Crover was added to the staff of the East Texas Journal.

Her duties included typesetting, helping with layouts and being a regular Girl Friday. "How does 'production assistant' sound? That was what we came up with for an official title," she grinned.

"There is nothing quite like the emotional high experienced at seeing the final product of something you put together," Crover said of her work.

Serving on her high school newspaper, Tiger Talk, for three years sparked her growing love of journalism.

"These experiences provided me the opportunity to explore the public relations/advertising field to see if that is the career I want to pursue," she said.

A contemplative expression passes over her face as the host of possibilities for the future can be seen in her eyes.

"I'm a people person. Public relations is definitely the field area I want to go into; I just am not certain of the specific area," she said.

A 1994 Mount Pleasant High School graduate, her list of accomplishments, awards, and activities are limitless. Yet she insisted there is more to her life and dreams than being an honors student and ranking eighth in a class of approximately 240 graduates.

Crover descends from a long line of overachievers if such a creature exists.

Her great-grandfather, the late Otto Hanus, was a linguist who spoke seven languages. Hanus was the past curator of the SPJST museum and library. One of Paula Jean's relatives was an actual daughter of the American Revolution, and her great-grandmother, Rebekah Nurse, was burned at the stake during the Salem witch trials.

Because of her unusual ancestry, Crover supports an avid interest in genealogy and hopes to fully research her lineage.

Crover is attending Louisiana Scholars College at Northwestern State University in Nachitoches. Of her dreams and ambitions, she said, "I have a desire to accomplish a lot. I've had achievements, but I feel my greatest accomplishment is yet to come."

As you may recall, our Supreme Lodge, when they met in Temple in September, endorsed the concept of an "SPJST Member Services Directory," to be introduced early in 1995. The directory will be printed as a part of a special edition of the Vestnik.

As its name suggests, the SPJST Member Services Directory will be a listing of SPJST members who are in positions to provide various products and services for other SPJST members—kind of like our own yellow pages. There will be no charge for directory listings and the only prerequisite is that you are an SPJST member.

The directory will make every attempt to include the broadest range of service providers everything from accountants, auto mechanics and caterers to musicians, beauticians and attorneys. This also applies to members who de•iver home health care or companion care to

senior citizens and/or childcare services.

Part-time business owners and those who produce seasonal commodities—ranging from farm produce to firewood are also encouraged to participate. Likewise, those members who operate sideline businesses everything from Amway to Tupperware are encouraged to participate. The whole concept is based on the idea of "members helping members."

Only those listings which are deemed "questionable" or those which promote life insurance or other financial products available through the SPJST, will not be printed in the directory.

Prize Winning Recipes

Youth Letters Section District One Royalty Participates in Burleson County Parade

Showcasing the Winners of the 1994 SPJST State Youth Achievement Day Foods Competition Over the next two months, the Vestnik will publish the prize-winning recipes submitted by the winners of the 1994 State SPJST Youth Achievement Day Foods Competition. This week's recipes represent the 12 - 14 Age Group. We hope that you enjoy them.

Cheese Rolls Nicholas Racket First Place, Ages 12-14 Lodge 13, Dime Box Dough 4 cups flour 1 cup shortening 1 cup warm milk 1 package dry yeast 3 eggs 5 tablespoons sugar Cut shortening into flour in one bowl. In another bowl, place dry yeast. Add warm milk and stir until dissolved. Then add eggs and sugar.

Stir until mixed. Add flour mixture.

Work dough 4-5 minutes until smooth.

Chill 4-5 hours. Divide dough into quarters. Roll into rectangular shape and spread filling down the center of the dough. Bring ends up and sides.

Seal with fingertips. Place on greased cookie sheets. Let rise at least 30 minutes or longer. Bake at 375 degrees for 20-25 minutes.

Filling 4 packages 8-ounce cream cheese 2 teaspoons vanilla 1 1/2 cup sugar 3 eggs Mix ingredients together and store in refrigerator until ready to use.

Glaze baked rolls with powdered sugar and milk.

Coconut -

Nicole Dum Second Place, Ages 12-14 Lodge 97, Placedo Crust 3 cups flaked coconut 7 tablespoons butter or margarine Filling 3/4 cup sugar 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 3 tablespoons cornstarch 1/4 teaspoon salt 3 cups li g ht cream 4 egg yolks, li g htly beaten 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 2 large firm bananas, sliced Whipped Cream and sliced bananas, optional In a skillet, saute coconut in butter until golden. Press all but 2 tablespoons into the bottom and up the sides of a greased 9-inch pie plate.

Bake at 350 degrees for 7 minutes. In a saucepan, combine the sugar, flour, cornstarch and salt. Gradually add cream and bring to boil. Cook and stir

constantly for 2 minutes. Add a small amount to egg yolks. Return all to pan; cook for 2 minutes. Remove from heat; add vanilla. Cool to room temperature. Place bananas in the crust. Cover with cream mixture.

Chill until set, about 2 hours. Sprinkle with reserved coconut. If desired, garnish with whipped cream and bananas.

Sweet Chocolate Cake German

Cole Vick Third Place, Ages 12-14 Lodge 88, Houston 1 (4 ounce) package German's Sweet Chocolate 2 1/3 cups sifted cake flour 1 1/2 cups sugar 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 2/3 cup butter or margarine 1 cup buttermilk 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 eggs Easy Coconut-Pecan Filling and Frosting Melt chocolate over low heat; cool.

Sift flour with sugar, soda, baking powder and salt. Soften butter. Add flour mixture, 3/4 cup buttermilk and vanilla. Mix to dampen flour; beat 2 minutes at medium speed of electric mixer, scraping bowl occasionally.

Add chocolate, eggs, and remaining 1/4 cup buttermilk. Beat 1 minute with mixer. Pour into 2 (9-inch) layer pans lined on bottom with paper. Bake at 350 degrees about 35 minutes or until cake tester inserted into center comes out clean. Cook in pans 15 minutes; remove. Cool on racks.

Frost.

Easy Coconut-Pecan Filling and Frosting 3/4 cup evaporated milk 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1/2 cup butter or margarine 1 teaspoon vanilla 3 egg yolks, slightly beaten 1 1/3 cups (about) flaked coconut 1 cup chopped pecans Combine milk, sugars, butter and vanilla. Bring to a full boil, stirring constantly. Remove from heat.

(Mixture may appear curdled).

Quickly stir small amount of hot mixture into egg yolks; then stir into hot mixture. Return to boil, stirring constantly. Remove from heat. Add coconut and pecans. Cool to spreading consistency, beating occasionaiiv.

Dear Readers, On Sunday, September 11, 1994, the New Tabor SPJST Youth Club had their annual Appreciation and Awards Banquet in conjunction with their Grandparent's Day Program. Over 90 youth members and their parents and grandparents enjoyed a delicious meal of roast beef, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, and green beans catered by our own Ricky's Catering.

Perfect Attendance Awards were presented to the eight youth members who attended all 12 monthly meetings for the 1993-94 youth year. Those members receiving perfect attendance awards were, as pictured, Jill Malazzo, Mabrey Petty, Charee Surovik, Vicki Morehead, Vince Morehead, Ricky Mantey, Patrick Mantey, and Marshall Petty.

Now is the Time to Apply for an SPJST Scholarship for the 1995 Academic Year The time is now for seniors and undergraduates to apply for SPJST scholarships for the 1995 academic year.

Scholarship applications will be accepted through December 31.

Funded by the SPJST and voluntary contributions, the Scholarship Program is administered by the SPJST Supreme Lodge as an investment in our young people. To be eligible to apply for an SPJST scholarship, one must have an active SPJST insurance certificate in force for at least one year at the time of application. The applicant must hold an active SPJST insurance certificate for the duration of the scholarship.

To receive their scholarship, winners are required to attend a college that offers programs leading to a bachelor's degree in the United States of America, accredited by a recognized accrediting body.

Students applying for a technical scholarship must plan to enroll in a technical program of 18 or more months.

Both Kristen and Mica graduated from Caldwell High School in May 1994 and are no longer eligible to participate in the youth club. We miss them but are trying to keep them active in lodge activities.

The youth club is busy making preparations for the holiday season and keeping busy with local activities. More letters will be coming to keep you in touch with the activities of Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club.

24, Cyclone Youth Club Enjoys Successful Carnival Lodge

Dear Members and Friends: On Sunday, October 30, Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club sponsored a Halloween Carnival at Flag Hall.

The carnival began at 3 p.m. Our games were "Dingo, ball throw, basketball throw, dart throw, lollipop ghost, ring toss, bean bag throw, pumpkin patch,

country store, cake walk, and fortune telling.

Five of our members created a haunted house at the carnival. The members were Danny Baker, Tammy Baker, Jennifer Ashcraft, Lisa Spanhel, and Tonya Spanhel. Louie Jimenez, who is a youth club friend, also helped. They really did a great job and the haunted house was a favorite attraction of the afternoon.

Congratulations to our costume contest winners and thanks to everyone who participated in the contest. Our judges were James Britton of Temple, Chip Howell of Red Ranger, and Melissa Pechal of Rogers.

A hot dog meal was served during the. event. Our two "chefs" who prepared the meal were Shirley Ashcraft and Fawn Spanhel.

Our raffle drawing was very successful. Prizes were donated by Faye Hudson (heart wood stool), Debbie Veselka (sunflower crate), Martha Zavodny (basket of canned goods), and Evelyn Henson (set of pillows). The prizes were won by Penny Coots of Zabcikville, Rhonda Greger of Rosebud, Melissa Pechal of Rogers, and Janet Macek of Burlington.

After the carnival, members enjoyed a very entertaining hayride. Our driver was Richard Greger. Miro and Helen Spanhel provided the hay and trailer for our ride.

The Halloween Carnival was a great success and could not have been so without the wonderful help of our dedicated members and caring parents and grandparents.

New business included the t-shirt contest. We will decorate Lodge 40's hall for Christmas. We will decorate the hall on November 25. Please bring something for the veterans at next month's meeting. Next month's project is to make a Christmas card and write a poem in it.

Ross Juranek had a birthday this

month. We sang "Happy Birthday" to him.

Josef Blazel< Born February 6, 1364 Josef Biazek's short memoir, published in the 1906 issue of Amerikan narodni kalendar, provides yet another example of anticlericalism and suggests the importance of Czech-American fraternal clubs and societies in Texas.

As a child, Josef Blazek loved to read.

Although much of his reading was limited to catechism, religious tracts and school readers, he was fortunate enough to have a teacher, Antonin Trnka, who placed much emphasis on history and other areas of learning so his students could achieve the best possible education.

Countryman Ed. Kral taught Josef Blazek, along with several other boys, how to play brass instruments. It wasn't long before they were known far and wide as excellent musicians. Even the

governor of Texas praised the group for their accomplishments.

Josef Blazek arrived in Texas in 1880 with his family and settled temporarily in what is now College Station. During his life he became an active member of several organizations such as the Farmer's Alliance, the Cesko-slovansky hospodarsky spolek, the "Southern Star," CSPS Lodge No. 185, the "Plow and Book" society and the "Jan Zizka" lodge of free thinkers.

In 1866, Josef Blazek married Josefina Marek and later had six children; three boys and three girls.

Vsetfna, byla v letech 1777 ak 1781 centrem zapasu valagsk/ch evangelfkil za ndbokenskou svobodu.

V hijnu 1944 bylo tu stanovi gte jedne easti partyzansice brigady „Jan 2ikka," v listopadu opern/ bod brigady, sfdlo tabu. Na hibitove je pomnek partyzana Ivana Stepanova, kter/ pad! v boji na Cernave.

Severozdpadne od Vsetfna je vesnice Ratibot s partyzansk/m okolfm a jihozapadne se nachdzf Liptdl, kde naciste provedli tvrdou teroristickou akci proti obci v linoru 1945.

Valagskd Bystfice, jikne od Roknova pod Radho gtem byla v 17.stoletf portag skou stanicf. V osade je pomnik 13 obeaml updlen/ch nacisty.

Podfvejme se nynf do Roknova pod Radho gtem. Toto mesto je phipomfrano jik v roce 1267, za panovdnf eeskeho krdle Phemysla Otakara II (1253-1278). V roku 1746 tu vypuklo povstanf Valachu, ktere pet let pozdeji, v roce 1751, bylo potlaeeno vojskem a porta g i. V 17.stoletf tu zaeala v/roba papfru a kratkou dobu tu tek pracovaly skelne hute. Ve m6stS RoInov6 pod Radho gtem je sfdlo spravy Chrdnene krajinne oblasti Beskydy.

V tomto meste bylo zalokeno v roce 1925 Valagske muzeum v pffrodS, skanzen s valagsk/mi lidov/mi dhevenymi stavbami. Na sluneenf strani nad Roknovem vyrostla autenticka vala gskd dedina, kde pod formanskou chalupou roste „ gpalda" a len a nad rolnickou usedlostf „cigar" poklaid „jalinu," kde oyes je pouze na 3 prsty vysoky a roste tu „ktibice"— v ge tak jak se kilo kdysi----. Narodil se roce 1890 v obci Police, okres Vald gsko, kraj Jfeinsky na Morave. Pristehoval se do Texasu v roce 1906 s rodieemi Josef a Anna Staga do Temple, Texas. Bydleli phi Temple nekolik let phi Red Ranger, v/chodne od Temple, pak kratky eas phi Rosenberg. V roce 1914 vzal si za mankelku Albinu Pobohilovou.

Pozdeji koupili farmu phi Buckholts, v okresu Milam kde bydlelf do roku 1934. Dva roky vlastnili v Holland ma g iny na efstenf baviny (cotton gin). Krdtku dobil b/dleli v Temple a Pettibone.
