Young people deliver encore performances

SPJST stars shine inTFC spectacular

by State Youth Director Joni Lange On October 15, several SPJST youth club members, joined by SPJST State King Jason Cervenka of Lodge 29, Taylor and SPJST State Queen Delia Wiederhold of Lodge 13, Dime Box, represented the SPJST during the annual Youth Spectacular segment of the Texas Fraternal Congress (11-C). In addition to Jason and Delia presenting their State YAD speeches, they also had the honor of serving as host and hostess of the Youth Spectacular.

Exercise Your Right to Vote Election Day is November 8 "If Angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on the government would be necessary, but in the absence of heavenly guidance government must be restrained, and a dependence on the people is, no doubt, the primary control."

James Madison As James Madison observed nearly 200 years ago, the key role of popular elections are to provide a "check on power." In addition to the personal satisfaction that it provides, the ballot box provides a way for the people to control those who govern. It stands to reason: Those seeking election must further the public interest in order to achieve public office. The people may not rule-but they definitely influence those who do.

Election Day will be next Tuesday, November 8. It will be your opportunity to play a deciding role in the democratic process: To select those men and women who will lead, direct and enforce legislation for our counties, districts and state.

In spite of all that, many Texans won't be going to the polls. It isn't just a "Texas" thing. The United States ranks near the bottom of Western democracies in voter turnout. In fact, voter turnout in the U.S. has steadily declined since the 1960 presidential election.

Why is that?

One guess is that it has something to do with people being disillusioned with the system. Disillusionment that has grown from the social disruptions of the 1960s, the assassination's of John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, and Martin Luther King, Jr., the Watergate scandal, and the subsequent resignation of a president-the list goes on . . . The media may have also played a role in declining voter turnout. Television-especiallyhas made big business of highlighting negative news and overwhelming its viewers with the complexities of everyday life. The end result: Many people are convinced that life's problems are too complex to solve-so they don't vote.

Everyone, of course, doesn't feel that way. This past Fourth of July, President Vaclav Havel of the Czech Republic received the Liberty Medal at a presentation made at Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In his acceptance speech, he addressed some of the extraordinary challenges facing our world. In doing so, he also expressed his faith in the "fundamental ideas of modern democracy." Sometimes it takes "doing without" to fully appreciate what you have . . .

The essential principle of our democratic government is government by the people. The cornerstone of our political process are free elections. You've got an opportunity to participate in the process next Tuesday. Make the most of it.

Support Your Local Sales Reps With just under two months to go in this year's Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program, it seems appropriate to acknowledge the ongoing efforts of our SPJST sales representatives. These are the brothers and sisters who get out in our local communities and tell the story of the services and benefits offered through our Society.

Typically, those sales representatives who are the most successful are those who know the best and latest methods of selling fraternal insurance and financial products. They are aware of the trends affecting the marketplace and are able to visualize the world of tomorrow so that they can help our members and prospective members meet their financial obligations in the future.

For some, it's the insurance. For others, it's the social interaction. And, for still others, its the Society's home and farm mortgages.

Home and farm mortgages are two of the most unheralded member benefits offered by the SPJST to its members. In addition to offering competitive interest rates, an SPJST mortgage provides the the peace of mind knowing who you will be dealing with from month-to-month and year-to-year.

Unlike many commercial financial institutions, the SPJST will not "sell" your mortgage note to another financial institution. If you have a home or farm loan through a savings and loan association, then you may know what its like to receive a letter informing you that your mortgage has been transferred to another holding company. It's just one more chance for you-and you special concerns-to get lost in the shuffle. If you've been there, then you know it's no fun.

Underwriting guidelines stipulate that the SPJST may lend up to 75 percent of the purchase price or appraised value, whichever is less, on "first-class residential real estate." For example, if the land and dwelling are appraised at $100,000, the maximum amount that can be financed is $75,000. Likewise, each immediate family is subject to a maximum financing limitation of $100,0000.

From the President's Office Attention Volleyball Players

Spotlight on Our SPJST Staff

1994 SPJST State Volleyball Tournament Set for November 19 Brother Frank encourages all volleyball players to, "Come on out and have a ball!" The 1995 SPJST State Volleyball Tournament will be played at the Bruceville-Eddy High School Gymnasium located 17 miles north of Temple.

Christy Benson Clerk-Typist Internal Administration 2 1/2 Years of Service

In her position as ClerkTypist, Sister Benson applies a range of clerical and administrative skills, including filing, and typing. She also alternates as receptionist and responds to various customer service requests.

In addition, she provides regular assistance in the verificationof mortgage loans.

Her position is under the supervision of the Supreme Lodge SecretaryTreasurer.

Christy is a graduate of Troy High School.

Prior to working for the SPJST, she was employed in a variety of service oriented positions, including a daycare facility and the pediatrics wing of Scott & White Hospital. Since coming to the SPJST, she has received certification as an Emergency Medical Technician.

"I've always enjoyed working with people," she says. "I don't believe that you can overemphasize the concept of teamwork. I know the kind of service I like to receive. So, in whatever I do, I try to deliver that kind of service. To be in a position to satisfy a customer's request really gives me a good feeling."

According to Christy, her earliest recollections of the SPJST were the dances at Central Texas area lodge halls that she attended with friends while she was growing up.

"SPJST meant fun. It was a place to go and have a good time." After signing on with the Home Office, her concept of the system expanded.

"Working at the Home Office has given me a chance to see that SPJST is a lot more than just Saturday night dances.

"SPJST is about building financial security. And it's about friends and families working together. I like that idea," says Christy, who is a member of Lodge 47, Seaton.

Something else that Sister Benson likes is working with young people. She had a chance to do that in 1992 when she served as nurse for the SPJST District Four Summer Camp. "It's still the most memorable event of my time working here," she says.

"Working with the kids let's them know the generation ahead of them cares. Knowing that somebody cares about you is very important in this day and time."

When she isn't working, Christy is anxiously awaiting the birth of her second child. Her special interests include reading and dancing—both of which she hasn't had much time for lately, as she explains.

"Between work, making preparations for the new baby and playing with my two-and-a-half year old son, Chad, it's a full day."

1994 SPJST State Volleyball Tournament Guidelines 1. Rules reflect standard High School Regulations (with exceptions in "B" category).

2. Local lodge teams will advance directly from local lodge to the State Volleyball Tournament.

3. Players must be 15 years of age by the date of the State Tournament.

4. The 1994 tournament will include two categories - A and B. Each lodge may enter up to four teams per lodge: two "A" teams; and two "B" teams.

Team Definitions: "A" Team—Spiking is allowed and not called—unless purposely directed at a female. Spiking directed toward and hitting any female may be called at the option of the referee and team responsible would lose the ball or point.

"B" Team—No spiking allowed.

If a team spikes a ball, the team that spikes would lose the ball or the point. If a played ball is questioned to be a spike, the referee will make the decision. A mild tap down is not considered a spike.

5. Any time a team achieves a score of 11-0, that team wins the game.

6. A roster of the players' names for each team must be sent to the Home Office at least one week before the State Tournament.

7. Teams regular playing roster shall not exceed 12 players, including a playing manager.

8. At least two of the six players must be female.

9. When the ball is played more than once by a team, at least one of the contacts shall be made by a female player.

Contact of the ball during blocking shall not constitute playing the ball. There is no requirement for a male player to contact the ball, regardless of the number of contacts by the team.

10. A team cannot change categories after it has been registered with the State FAC. 11. To encourage more members to participate, a member may not play on more than one team. If some unforeseen misfortune arises an exception will be considered by the State FAC. This request should be brought to the State FAC. SPJST-

is the Time to Apply for an SPJST Scholarship for the 1995 Academic Year Now

The time is now for seniors and undergraduates to apply for SPJST scholarships for the 1995 academic year.

Scholarship applications will be accepted through December 31.

Funded by the SPJST and voluntary contributions, the Scholarship Program is administered by the SPJST Supreme Lodge as an investment in our young people. To be eligible to apply for an SPJST scholarship, one must have an active SPJST insurance certificate in force for at least one year at the time of application. The applicant must hold an active SPJST insurance certificate for the duration of the scholarship.

To receive their scholarship, winners are required to attend a college that offers

programs leading to a bachelor's degree in the United States of America, accredited by a recognized accrediting body.

Students applying for a technical scholarship must plan to enroll in a technical program of 18 or more months.

SPJST scholarships are awarded by a committee of educators not associated with the SPJST. Winners must enter college the fall term following the announcement that they have won.

District Two President Expresses Thanks Dear District Two Officers and Members, I would like to take this time to express my gratitude to the District Two officers for the great job they did at the Fall Meeting. I want you all to know it was so wonderful to know I have such a hard working group of friends who I can count on.

Thanks also to Lodge 80, Holland for being so dedicated to District Two and making sure the meeting was a success and that everything was taken care of. I

have heard all good reports on Lodge 80 members and their hard work. The biggest thanks goes to the members of District Two for all coming to this meeting and being a part of it.

Everyone who came, donated items, and worked, I want to say "THANK YOU." You are all great.

I wish I could have been there with you all, but I guess this is my time to be ill, but things are getting better.

District Six Fall Meeting Set for November 13 in Victoria The 1994 fall social District Six SPJST meeting will be held November 13 at the Victoria Electric Cooperative in Victoria, hosted by Lodge 97, Placedo. The proposed agenda is as follows: 11:00 - 11:45 — Registration 11:45 -12:30 — Meal Following Meal — Business meeting, programs, raffles, door prizes, contests, contest results, games, refreshments, social Door prizes will be given throughout the afternoon. Any members or lodge is encouraged to donate an item for the door prizes.

This is a district affair and all lodges are asked to assist and participate. To help with the expenses, each lodge is requested to send 10 cents for each member in their lodge. The number of lodge members can be obtained from your lodge secretary or from the Supreme Lodge.

Avenue K, Rosenberg, Texas 77471, as soon as possible. We are asking each lodge to furnish two desserts to serve with the catered meal and afternoon coffee.

In addition, a wheel of fortune game will be played. Each family attending is asked to donate two items for the game (pantry items, children's toys, kitchen items, etc.).

In conjuction with the social, there will be several contests that members may wish to enter. The following contests will be held if there are sufficient entries: needlework, quilts, and kolaches.

Rules may be obtained from your lodge, district or state FAC. They will also be published in the Vestnik.

We have had several previous fall social meetings and all have been a success due to your assistance. We can have another with your participation and contribution. We hope to see as many of you as possible on November 13 in Victoria.

District Seven Director and Spouse Offer Tribute to Dorothy Massey Sister Dorothy Massey was like one of the family. We talked many nights about youth-related subjects and some personal matters. She was partially responsible for my appointment to the Longhorn Recreation Lab (LRL) Board for eleven years. I still remember the night that I was asked to serve on the LRL board. I asked them if I could have another day to give my answer because I needed to talk

it over with someone. I met with Sister Dorothy and we talked for about four hours about the pros and cons. We both came to the same decision and for the next eleven years, I served on the board.

Dorothy was a lady you could talk to.

Polly and I will greatly miss her. Curtis and Betty, we love you.

Letters from the Lodges Lodge 15, Buckholts Reports on October Meeting President Gladys Allison called the October 10 meeting to order and led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Members remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our departed members.

The minutes from the previous meeting were read and approved.

The treasurer's and all committee reports were approved.

We are happy to have Michael Hughes as one of our new sales representatives.

Two new members were approved.

They are Chad and Ryan Mikulec.

It was good to have Leslie Sakewitz and Edwin Kohutek back with us after a long absence due to illness.

Correspondence was read by President Gladys Allison from the Supreme Lodge.

New and old business was then discussed.

Thanks to Ricky McCall for repairing the ramp. It is so good to have young men helping in the lodge.

Our next meeting will be November 14 at 6 p.m The election of officers will he held. Come out and support the members and officers in making decisions for 1995. We are working on several programs for young people (such as DARE).

So come out and help us with some input into this program.

18, Elgin Reports on October Meeting Lodge

Lodge 18, Elgin held its regular meeting on October 18 at 7:30 p.m. with 20 members present. President Dale Kessel

opened the meeting and led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Officers present were President Kessel, Fraternal Activities Coordinator Leslie Gustafson, Secretary Agnes Eschberger, and Treasurer Alice Kovar.

Minutes of the September meeting were approved. No correspondence was received.

Alice Kovar gave a detailed report on the finances for the past month.

FAC Leslie Gustafson asked the members to remember the SPJST One Hundred Pennies Scholarship Drive for the 1995 academic year and try to gather up new members.

In the absence of Gladys Mahoney, Alice Kovar reported on tickets sales.

Entertainment chairperson Irene Helgreen reported on a possibility of a Spanish music dance on a Saturday night or Sunday afternoon. President Kessel will get more information from the band leader.

The Christmas Party dance will be December 11 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. with Leo Majek and Fritz Hodde. Remember to bring your "goodies" to your table and "snack" all evening.

Members on the sick list were Ben David, Marvin Marek, and Joe Haisler.

God grant you a speedy recovery.

The November meeting is important for all to attend because it will include the election of officers. The nominating committee consists of Jack Eschberger, Gladys Mogonye, and Jim Mogonye.

The members elected Alice Kovar as our "Fraternalist of the Year". There is no member more deserving than Alice, as she does not say much, but she accomplishes a lot. Lodge 18 will be proud to have Alice representing them.

FAC Leslie Gustafson reported on problems with the roof and drainage around the lodge. As soon as the weather permits, the problems will he taken care of.

Aleen Gaida, member of Lodge 18, approached the members about a Progressive 42 Tournament to he held at the lodge. Members will contact the chairperson of the tournament.

LaVerne Bartosh was the lucky winner of the door prize. She donated her door prize hack to the lodge for Christmas decorations. Thank you, LaVerne.

Members Jack and Agnes Eschberger were picked as King and Queen at the Hub Polka Fest in Yoakum. Our lodge is proud to have you as King and Queen.

Tallas Family of Lodge 29, Taylor Tops Kolache Festival Winners Taylor's celebrated kolache bakers, Frances and Carol Tallas, walked off with the lion's share of awards at Caldwell's Kolache Festival. Their rosettes and trophies fill the hearth of Carol's fireplace.

Taylor has produced winners each year at the September 10, 1994 event and the Tallas family members have been consistent winners. In 1990, Frances entered the Caldwell contest for the first time, but she did not win. The next year, she was declared state Champion. Rules dictate that the winner sit out a year, so in 1993, she was again winner of the state title. So, this year when she was eligible again, she entered the competition. Only this time, she entered the professional division, and nabbed Reserve Champion title.

Her daughter-in-law, Carol, was named State Reserve Champion in the

non-professional category. In 1992, she was State Champion.

Her son, Chad, also won two trophies for his kolache baking expertise.

It is getting to be old hat for the Tallas family. The whole family was involved this year, as they rented a booth to sell kolaches during the festival.

Earlier this month, Carol participated in Westfest, and took second and third place trophies for her fruit kolaches and second place for "other."

Two other Taylor women, Alice Schwenke and Dorothy Merkord, won ribbons for their kolaches, and Dolly Hajda of Granger was grand champion.

24, Cyclone Reports to Host Sale Day and Cookoff on November 12 Lodge

Dear Members and Friends, Get your entries in now. The Lodge 24, Cyclone Barbecue Cook-Off, which has been sanctioned by the C.T.B.A., will be Saturday, November 12. The cookoff will include competition in three barbecue categories: Beef Brisket, Chicken and Pork Ribs.

The entry fee will be $40, regardless of the number of barbecue categories.

Trophies will be awarded for the fist three places in each category. A "Best Pit" trophy will also be awarded. Cash prizes will be determined, based on the total number of entries.

Lodge 49, Rowena Expresses Thanks For Successful Clothing Drive Lodge 49, ROwena wants to thank the members of Lodge 49 and their families and friends who brought used clothes for our clothing drive for the San Angelo State School in Carlsbad, Texas.

We had the drive for clothes in September and October. The results were very good. Two of our members, Pat Tomlinson and Elizabeth Urbanek, took 394 pounds of clothes to the school two weeks ago. They said that the gift was very much appreciated.

Lodge 66, Waco Reports on October Meeting Dear Members, The meeting was called to order at 2:30 p.m. by Vice President Mary A. Langlotz. The flags were presented by Alicia Neslony and Sandra Trickett. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Candice McAdams and the lodge motto was led

The members stood in a moment of silence for our deceased members, Margaret Juricek, Arthur Schiemenz, Arthur C. Langlotz and Vaudine Chandler. May they rest in peace.

Secretary Bonnie Pruitt read the minutes of the previous meeting and they were approved as read.

The minutes of the Board of Trustees meeting were read by Evelyn Stuckly and they were approved.

Sister Darlene Engelke read a thank you note from Mary A. Langlotz.

Gloria Locke gave the Entertainment Committee report. She stated that at the November 20 meeting, barbecue-on-bun will be served. Members are asked to bring desserts.

The FAC report was presented by Mary Langlotz. We will have our Social Game Night on November 14 at 7 p.m.

A sympathy card was sent to the Arthur Langlotz family, and get well cards were sent to Lenn Hensel and Doris Glatter.

John Engelke asked that as many members as possible donate pennies to the SPJST Scholarship Fund as it is a worthy cause.

The project of the parking lot reconstruction will be done the first week in November if the weather permits.

Lodge 79, Corpus Christi Hosting Czech Dinner November 20 Lodge 79, Corpus Christi is planning a Czech dinner to be held before our regular November meeting on November 20.

Once again, Jill Sijansky volunteered to prepare her delicious dumplings to be served with roast beef furnished by the lodge. Members are asked to call Jill at 937-4324 or Glenda Elzner at 241-1965 if you plan to attend, so they would have some idea of how much food to prepare.

Jerry Elzner will be back from his two month stay in the Czech Republic during which time he was joined by others on shorter visits. They will share their experiences with us and also present slides of the beautiful Czech and Slovak sites they visited. I am hoping Jerry will display many Czech items purchased during this visit as he did last year.

Last year's Czech Day at our lodge was a huge success and we would like a repeat performance this year. If you attended last year, you know how enjoyable it was. 81, Needville Reports on October Meeting

Lodge

Despite the inclement weather, 46 members and guests attended the October meeting held on Sunday, October 16 in Needville. Dinner consisted of chicken fried steak furnished by the lodge and many delicious vegetables, salads, and desserts brought by the sisters of the lodge. The kitchen committee thanks everyone who brought food and helped in the kitchen.

At 1 p.m., President Adolph Macha opened the business meeting. Benita Walzel led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. All officers were present. A moment of silence was observed for departed members, Ruby Filla, Robert Spacek, and Millie Vrubl.

Louis Hanus, District Five Director, was our special guest. Other guests included Shirley Sebesta, Mary Ann

Grudziecki, Jan Wetz, Emilia Meyer, and Louis Stavinoha. We also welcomed the Michael Tydlacka family including Mary, Thomas, Jonathan, and Nick. Also, Robert and Martha Polasek came all the way from Brazoria.

President Macha read correspondence received from the Supreme Lodge.

Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes from the September meeting which were accepted after a minor correction.

September reports were accepted as read from Treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendall and Special Fund Chairman Gilbert Walzel.

On our sick list are Annie Horelica, Rosie Schwettmann, Erna Gorka, Elsie Sitta, Selma Meier, and Louise Newman.

Brother Vincent Nevvman,Sr.. is now a resident of S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 2.

Brother Edward Susan was elected Fraternalist of the Year by lodge members. Congratulations to Edwin for his many years of faithful service as vice president and bar manager.

Sister Benita Walzel of the Rules and Regulations committee reported no new regulations have been submitted to her.

However, minor deletions in the rules were approved by members.

Reporter Louise Newman has broken her arm and tendered her resignation.

However, election of a new reporter was tabled until the next meeting. In the meanwhile, Jeanette Newman has agreed to write the October report.

Brothers Gilbert Walzel and Vincent Joe Newman reported on the needed repairs to the lodge hall's air conditioning system.

Director Louis Hanus addressed the members discussing his travels and bringing news from the Supreme Lodge.

Brother Hanus is always a welcomed visitor to our lodge.

Lodge 84, Dallas Reports on October Meeting Dear Members, Many who attended the Czech Day at the State Fair of Texas on Sunday, October 16 were also able to get to our monthly meeting on Monday, October 17 — despite the humid weather and threats of more rain.

A moment of silence was observed for our departed member, Brother Otto Skotak. May he rest in peace, Brother Ben Jarma of the Sunshine Committee stated that he sent get well cards to Robert (Sonny) Pokladnik and Sister Mildred Baleja. Sympathy cards were sent to the Otto Skotak family on the loss of Otto's wife, Mary; Joe Tydlaska and family on the loss of their brother; and Jerri Ann Kopecky and family on the loss of their father.

Brother Salac of the House Committee thanked Brother Emil Petr for his help with the yard work on the parking lot and alley way. He also thanked the members who helped clean the floor after the down pour last week.

Brother Emil Petr (Hail Rental), Sister Olson (Living Memorial), Sister Evelyn Salac (Special Committee), and Sister Fay Rejcek (Fraternal Activities Coordinator) all gave detailed reports for September.

Sister Bessie Petr reported that Lodge 84 youth received first places on the poster and the scrapbook at the Texas Fraternal Congress. She also reported that a group danced the Beseda at the Texas Fraternal Congress. Four circles of Beseda were enjoyed also by all at the State Fair on Sunday, October 16. Sister Bessie also reminded all that District Three meets on Sunday, October 23 at Lodge 66, Waco.

Sister Wanda Petr reported that good food and games were enjoyed at our lodge at the Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Council hosted by WOW. On November 14 this group will again meet at Lodge 84. This time Lodge 84 is the host.

Sister Wanda invited all to come at 7:30 P.m.

Sister Bessie Petr has been nominated as Fraternalist of the Year from our lodge.

We congratulate her.

Sister Cheri Petr, Sister Lilly Maxey, and Brother Ben Jarma are the nominating committee for the election of officers next month. There will be a committee meeting on November 1 at 7:15 p.m.

Just a reminder that the Czech Culture Society meets on November 28.

Our lodge made a donation for the scholarship fund at our October meeting.

Our next lodge meeting is November 21 at 7:30 p.m.

The Ennis Czech Orchestra is playing for dancing on November 19 and the Mikulas' play on December 17.

Halloween was really put on in a big way this year as there were a lot of spooky things around the stores. Even the nursing homes were decorated with spider webs and ghosts. It seems that time really goes by fast now, or is it because we rush everything now?

Things like this were always slower or is it that as children we just could not wait for different holidays? Just as it has been said, we are put on earth for a short time, so we try to get all we can out of life.

Last Sunday, October 24, the District Three meeting was held at Waco Linden Hall, Lodge 66. It was a nice day after many days of rain in Texas.

The meeting was nice and the officers gave good reports. Brother George Pauling explained about the nursing homes and the piano project. Brother Ben Jarma discussed the insurance department. Brother Al Kercho gave the report on the finances. Sister Martha Durham presented the input and output of the money of District Three and also the activities. Brother Sid Pokladnik told about what is going on at the headquarters. Then Brother Jerry Mikulas talked about the loans and also about a new insurance policy that Brother Leonard Mikeska is working on that really will be a good selling point. Brother Mikulas explained that SPJST is in very good shape and that money is always invested at the best rate of interest.

Sister Bessie Petr, District Three Youth Counselor, has a splendid program with our youth. These young people are the ones who will be taking our place later in years.

Here at Lodge 92, Fort Worth things are being organized for our Christmas party and other things are being discussed. As it has been reported, there will not be the four Metroplex Christmas party of lodges 92, 154, 180, and 183. I am sure that each lodge will have their own party.

Lodge 92 will have our own for members and guests. Then, there will be an annual children's Christmas party with Santa as the main item of the evening.

The date and time of the party will be in my next letter.

At our next meeting on November 13, we will be having our election of officers.

Also, at our meeting, the Fraternalist of the Year will be announced.

The Country Music Association will be having "Toys for Tots." Toys are to be brought for the underprivileged children. The toys do not have to be wrapped. More on this will be in my next letter. This is a wonderful project put on by this organization.

133, San Antonio Reports on October Meeting Lodge

Lodge 133, San Antonio held their regular monthly meeting on October 16 at St. Margaret Mary's Activity Center in San Antonio.

Donations are being accepted for the 1995 "100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive." All SPJST members are eligible to apply for scholarships provided by this fund. 142, Houston Reports on October Meeting

At 2 p.m. on October 9, 1994, our monthly meeting was called to order by President Keith Kieschnick. We had 48 members and ten visitors.

All stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. The roll call of officers showed that all officers were present except our youth leader, Elizabeth Hermis.

The minutes from the previous meeting were read and approved. No correspondence was received. All officers reports were read. The sick committee reports Lillie Melner, Marilyn Spring, and Amy Tumis in the hospital.

Visitors were recognized and welcomed to our meeting.

We had, a guest speaker, Jimmy Harling, from the Houston Fire Department. He spoke in regards to fire prevention. October 15-22 was Fire Prevention Week. His presentation was very informative and enjoyed by all members.

We had one new member, Jonathan M. Wiskoski. His sales representative is Sidon Tumis.

The capsule for $30.00 went unclaimed due to the absence of Lindsey Powell and Michael W. Tumis. Next month's prize goes to $40.00.

Birthdays for October are Steve Braunagel, Lillian Schmidt, Marilyn Spivey, and Jo Ann Buri.

Anniversaries for October are Howard and Ruth Kieschnick (48 years); Robert and Barbara Boyd (25 years); Joe and Eva Braunagel (33 years); and Henry and Rita Hermis (45 years). Henry and Rita Hermis donated four door prizes in memory of their 45 years of married life. The winners of these prizes were Lillie Valka, Lula Gambil, Martin Kieschnick, and Jason Hermis.

A delicious fried chicken dinner with the trimmings and refreshments were served.

191, Lufkin Reports on Coming Events

Lodge

Greetings to all SPJST Texas members from Lodge 191, Lufkin in East Texas.

Yes, sir, we still exist, and it has been a long time since we had any news or gossip for the Vestnik.

Summertime is passing us again, and normally we do not have but one dance per month in the summertime. But now, it is cooling off, and we are starting to hold two or three dances a month.

Our Entertainment officers, George and Pat Scogin, have done a great job having our dances all this year. Now they are even busier getting our dances for the rest of the year.

Our next dance will be November 12.

This is our President's Ball, a dress-up affair. Henry Tannenberger will be playing for us.

On November 26 we will have our country/western dance with Canyon Creek Band playing.

December 17 will be a country and western dance and Christmas Party.

Of course, on December 31 is our big New Year's Dance, including black-eyed peas, cabbage, and corn bread at midnight. Wow—that sounds good already.

And then again, by the end of this year, we will have our new officers for 1995.

Our 1994 officers have done a fabulous job. They are: President James and Lynda Blackburn; First Vice President Peggy Clowers; Second Vice President James and Linda Hancock; Secretary Larry and Sandra Taylor; and Treasurer Tucker and Patsy Weems.

Sister Vickie and Jerry Kohn attended the annual reunion of the Second Signal Battalion in Minden, Nebraska. They visited the Pioneer Village, the only museum of progress in the United States which tells the story of America and of how it grew since 1830.

A speedy recovery is wished to sisters Mary Vrana and Mary Polasek.

Hope the weather will continue to be nice. We had our share of water for the past week. Now we are looking forward to cool weather.

Sewing Circle Reports on October Meeting

The Ennis Sewing Circle met on October 13, 1994. There were 28 members and seven guests present. Our guests were Betty Steagall, Jerry Kohn, Charles Kosarek, Joe Vlk, Jerry Zmolek, Julius Podhrasky, and Frank Laznovsky.

President Sadie Kubin called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. A moment of silence was observed in memory of Arnold Dobecka.

Vlasta Laznovsky read the minutes in the absence of our regular secretary.

The minutes were approved as read.

Vlasta also took the minutes. Treasurer Mildred Trojacek gave the financial report. It was approved as given.

Get well cards were signed by members to be sent to sisters Mary Vrana and Mary Polasek. Sister Bessie Taraba thanked the Circle for the get-well card and the money gift.

A quilt was made for the Ennis Sewing Circle. It will be given away at our November meeting. Tickets are $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00, members only.

Sister Sylvia Laznovsky, on behalf of the Junior Sokols, thanked the quilters for making the quilt that will be given away in December. Tickets are $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to October birthday celebrants.

We welcomed two new members.

They are Libbie Vrla, daughter of Sister Mary Vrla, and Betty Steagall, a friend of Sister Sidney Bridewall. Libbie was unable to attend the meeting. We hope to see her at our November meeting.

It was good to see Sister Patricia Fowler at the meeting. Patricia is the daughter of Sister Mildred Trojacek.

Sister Mary Polasek donated several nice pieces of material. Sisters purchased the material and gave the proceeds to the Circle. Thank you, Mary.

Reports on Quarterly Meeting VCCHS

The Victoria County Czech Heritage Society met recently for their quarterly meeting at Victoria Electric Co-Op. Kenneth Stock of Shiner, Texas, was the recipient of a Czech Language Scholarship.

VCCHS has elected the following persons to serve as officers for 1995-96:

President, Joe Pustka; Vice President, Paul Hybner; Second Vice President, Joe Janak; Third Vice President, Tom Kurtz, Sr.; Treasurer, Ray Uherek; Secretary, Rose Brett; Historian, Lois Schindler; Reporter, Josephine Machac; One Year Director, Rev. Joe Hybner; Two Year Director, Oscar Marek; Three Year Director, Leonard Svercek; and Honorary Director, Bernice Kurtz.

The installation of officers will be held on December 1 at the Christmas party.

Mayor Ted Reed took part in the ribbon cutting ceremonies with open house at the McNamara House Museum. He presented the chapter with a plaque commemorating them on their ten-year anniversary and the special exhibit titled "Czech Heritage". The exhibit will be on display at the museum until November 6.

October has been proclaimed Czech Heritage Month by the Mayor. The Victoria Chamber of Commerce, Victoria Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and the African American Chamber of Commerce each presented VCCHS with similar plaques.

The Victoria Chapter will hold its Christmas party for all members, festival workers, and guests on December 1 at Holy Family Educational Center.

The Chapter will take charge of mailing the Cesky Hlas as of 1995.

Heritage Society of Texas to Meet November 12 Czech

The Fall State Meeting of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas will be in San Antonio on November 12, 1994 at the Pearl Brewing Company's Jersey Lilly, The meeting is sponsored by the Bexar County Chapter.

Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. with coffee and kolaches and a swap and share of family history, exhibits and family trees. Entertainment will be provided by the San Antonio Choral Group.

Lunch will be served at 11 a.m.

At noon, Calvin Chervenka of Dallas and George Koudelka of Moulton will present the program: "Czech Musical Heritage in Texas," emphasizing its history, importance of music in the lives of Czech-Texans and the influence of their music on other musical styles.

Mr. Chervenka was reared on a farm in Bell County. He has been interested in his Czech cultural heritage since childhood and made a lifelong study of it. In 1950, he originated the weekly Czech music program "Polka Parade" on station KFJZ in Fort Worth and WRR in Dallas.

Mr. Koudelka is the band director at Moulton High School. He has been a musician since 1955. He has one of the largest collections of artifacts, music and memorabilia of old Czech Bands.

Both of these men realized that Czech music, dancing, and song was one of the strongest aspects of the "Living Czech Heritage" in Texas and that it would be used to preserve and promote other aspects of the Czech Heritage.

Those traveling the farthest to attend the reunion were Bill and Dorothy Pavelka and Jerome and Helen Pavelka from Robstown, approximately 327 miles.

The longest-married couple in attendance was Fred and Elizabeth Kubitza, at 50 years. The shortest-time married couple was Thommy and Terri Pavelka.

Ruby Hazel Pavelka, who was also in attendance, celebrated her birthday at the reunion.

We were happy to have as visitors, Mr. and Mrs. Blaine Culverhouse of Fort Worth, who have been married 67 years.

They were our regular Saturday night visitors in the past.

Jimmy and Tonette Holle were selected as chairmen for next year's reunion.

Co-chairmen will be Freddie and Debra Kubitza.

Jerry Pavelka did a good job as chairman of this year's reunion. Freddie Kubitza and Jimmy Holle were the greatest helpers! Many thanks to all who helped. If you didn't get to attend, you missed a good time!

Families Hold Reunion on October 9 The Kovar-Volcik-Prcir reunion was held October 9, 1994, at the SPJST Lodge 20 hall in Granger, Texas.

The attendance was great with approximately 100 guests registering. Guests came from as far away as West, Texas, and Houston, Texas.

A covered meat dish was served with Wilbur Willis leading the grace before the meal. The auction was held after the meal and was a great success.

A short meeting was held and the next reunion will be held the second Sunday in October 1995 at the SPJST hall in Granger. Officers are President Leslie Loessin; Vice President Wilbur Willis; Secretary Marie Ann Ripple; Treasurer Ruby Loessin; and Reporter Evelyn Leshikar.

The oldest person in attendance was Emil Vitek of Granger. Emil is 80 years young. Adam Tallas of Taylor was the youngest person present.. He is eight years old. Lou Salazar of Houston, Texas, traveled the farthest. Some of the door prizes winners were Carl Fuessel, Rose Machu, Jerry Tallas of Taylor, and August Vitek of Granger.

Tamela Jo Huff and ames David Shirley Exchange Wedding Vows Tamela Jo Huff of Arlington became the bride of James David Shirley, Jr. of Fort Worth on Saturday, July 9, 1994 in Arlington.

The bride is the daughter of Alvin Huff of Arlington and Darlene Kohler of Euless. The groom is the son of Evelyn Shirley of Arlington and James David Shirley of Fort Worth. The bride is the granddaughter of John and Martha Huff of Arlington.

Maid of honor was Trici Huff, sister of the bride. Bridal attendants were Candice Normen, Kim Wagner, Carla Williams, Kim Phillips, Patti Bruni, and Jennifer King.

Austinites Study Moravian Culture in Roznov, Czech Republic Travis-Williamson Counties Chapter of Czech Heritage Society of Texas members participated in a three-week studies course on Moravian Culture at the Wallachian Museum at Roznov Pod Rodhostem, Czech Republic from May 30 to June 20, 1994.

The Austin group joined 25 other Texans at the Wallachian Museum.

Those attending from Austin were Jim Petter, Hy Burt, Dorothy Bohac, Willi Edwards, Frances Petter and Joe Novosad.

The group left from Austin on May 30 and flew by Delta Airlines to Vienna, Austria, where they were met by a bus from Wallachian Museum. This started the four-hour trip through the beautiful countryside to Roznov. This gave the group an opportunity to view the beauty of the countryside of our Moravian ancestors who settled in Texas. Upon arrival at Roznov, each participant was assigned to a family household where they lived for the three-week period.

The purpose of the course was to learn about the lives of our Moravian families who emigrated to Texas in the 1800s. The program was filled with classroom studies, various workshops, tours of the Moravian area and visits with the Wallachian people. Weekends were spent visiting family, friends, or searching for family roots. The program included history of the Moravian area and Wallachian people, life style of the people, architecture, arts, music, and cooking and language classes. Living with a family also provided an opportunity to speak Czech and to learn about the culture, life style, customs, and habits of a Moravian family.

The participants in the program soon learned what it is like to be without an automobile—on which the Americans are very dependent. They soon learned that walking and biking were the major modes of transportation. It was nothing unusual to see a 70 or 80 year old walking briskly or riding a bike.

The mode of transportation between villages was bus or train. It was a wellplanned system which was easily accessible to the people. Cars were available for purchase, but the cost was beyond the means of most people. Gasoline—at about $3 to $4 per gallon—was very expensive. Although more cars have been seen in the streets and on the highways since 1969, most people prefer to walk or ride a bike, bus or train.

The Moravian people enjoy visits from Americans and are very excited when a Czech-American comes to visit.

There are no local newspapers, but by "grapevine," the word gets around that someone has a family visiting them from America. They are very interested in learning about our American way of life, customs, and habits. They are surprised that Americans can still speak Czech— even if the Czech words are Anglicized.

The people are very resourceful.

They raise their own vegetables and fruit trees. In their yards, one will find chickens, ducks, geese, and rabbits. Meat is very expensive to buy in the market, so they raise their own meat or their meals are meatless. In the countryside, they raise their own hay for their animals.

The work in the field is done by hand and plowing is done with a horse and manpower. The large cooperative farms have the mechanical equipment. It is not all as "high tech" as you see in the

U.S.A. The homes and businesses are not air conditioned as the cooler climate does not require it..

I observed many changes since the fall of 1989 (this is my fourth trip) in the Czech Republic. The churches are now filled with people, and those attending are all ages—young and old, men, women and children. The peoples' attitudes are positive towards change. As one Czech lady said, " It took the Russians 50 years to destroy us and we cannot rebuild it all over night; but we do have our freedom."

The stores and businesses are stocked and have many of the same supplies or brand names as we see in our American stores. American businesses are beginning to invest. People are getting their property returned, and most families have television.

One disturbing thing that I witnessed was the image of American life projected on Czech television. It is through such programs as "Dallas." From these types of programs, many assume that the American life style is like what they see on television and that we all are millionaires.

Many also think that we are cowboys.

This cowboy image is reinforced by the Americans who visit the Czech Republic and bring with them gifts such as cowboy hats, etc. I would like for them to view us as being educated and professionals such as lawyers, teachers, doctors, and successful farmers and ranchers.

The Czechs assume that we are all millionaires because our salary base is so much higher than their salaries are. It is difficult to explain to them that "yes," their salaries are lower but the price of their goods is adjusted to their salary scale. They have very little concept of the cost of living for an American family compared to cost of living for a Czech family.

The Czechs have a great desire to come to visit relatives and friends in America, but they do not have the money to pay for the air fare and the cost of the travels. The air tickets from the Czech Republic to the United States for the Czech are the same prices as for the Americans. Air fare prices are not adjusted to their salary scale.

I observed that communication can be problematic when Americans visit the Czech Republic. The same is true when Czechs visit us in America. It is a matter of differences in culture, habits, customs, and how words are used to communicate. It seems to be "how something is said versus what is meant." Most Texans speak Czech with Anglicized Czech words. Also, there are differences in meaning in words and how they are used in the two languages. Some of the problems are because of the Texas Czechs limited vocabulary and the use of the Czech language. It gets more complicated when an interpreter gets involved. Many words cannot be translated word for word from Czech into English. The same applies when English is translated literally into Czech.

I experienced this when I was translating for some of the Texans. Based on this observation, Americans would do well to become sensitive to the difference in language translation. One lesson we can all learn is to be honest, sensitive and respectful to people of another culture and their life style. We need to be "good American models and ambassadors of goodwill."

The trip ended on June 20, 1994, in Austin with many wonderful learning experiences and memories. We also gained a better understanding of how our ancestors lived before they emigrated to America and a better understanding of the Czech language and the communication process. It is through their language that we learn about the culture and habits of other people.

My most important contribution to share from this trip is that Czechs in America need to become activists if they are to preserve their Czech language and culture. One way is to encourage Czechs to enroll in local community Czech classes. The Travis-Williamson Counties Chapter members have become very active in the promotion of interests and the preservation of the Culture of the Czechs and to preserve our Moravian dialect in the Czech language we speak. We are American by birth but Czech Moravians by heritage.

Darlene was born on June 12, 1943, to Ben W. and Paula (Bernshausen) Huebner. She attended school at Welcome and Bellville High School and Blinn College.

Darlene was united in marriage to Gilbert Canik on October 6, 1963.

Funeral services were held from the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church of Frelsburg with the Rev. Roger Duffy, Rev. Dan Morales, and Msgr. Sylvester Fuchs con-celebrating the funeral mass and Rite of Committal assisted by Rev. Alvin Luedke and Rev. Walter Schindehette.

Burial was in the Frelsburg Catholic Church.

She is survived by her husband, Gilbert Canik; one son, Richard Dwight Canik of Industry; one daughter and sonin-law, Cynthia Allison and Jeff Brannon of Austin; one grandson, one sister, and one half-sister.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services were under the direction of Knesek Brothers/Etlinger Funeral Chapel of Bellville.

Memory of Frances Vrana In

Frances Vrana, 65, of Moravia passed away on Saturday, September 24, 1994, at Colonial Nursing Home in Schulenburg, Texas. She was a member of Ascension Catholic Church and the Altar Society and SPJST Lodge 23, Moravia.

Mrs. Vrana was born October 5, 1928, to August and Frances Petrek Vornsand.

She was a lifelong resident of Moravia in Lavaca County. She was a homemaker, and while she and her husband operated the cotton gin at Moravia, she took care of the books.

On June 15, 1947, she married Eddie Vrana at St. John's, Texas.

Survivors include her husband, Eddie Vrana; two sons, Bruce Vrana and his wife, Shirley, of Moravia, and Dale Vrana and his wife, Claudia, of Weimer; two grandsons, Ty of Moravia and Reid of Weimer; two sisters, Willie Mae Schmidt of Houston and Hilda Melnar of Hallettsville; and numerous other relatives.

Frances was preceded in death by her parents, August and Frances Vornsand, and two brothers, Royce Vornsand and Walter Vornsand.

Rosary was recited at the Kuhena Funeral Home on Monday, September 26 at 7:30 p.m.

Pallbearers were Emil Vrana, III, Julius Vrana, Harvey Vrana, Tim Pospisil, Henry Melnar, Jr., Wayne Carby, and Norman Schmidt, all nephews of the deceased.

Frances will be missed by her family and her friends. She was a quiet person and during her illness, she accepted it very patiently. May God reward her with everlasting life.

Mrs. Juricek was a member of the SPJST, Czech Catholic Union of Texas, and the K.J.T. She is survived by her husband, Raymond Juricek; two sons and two daughters-in-laws, Daniel and Patricia Juricek and Larry and Becky Juricek; three grandchildren, Brandon Juricek, Ashley Juricek and Hollynd Juricek; three brothers, Albin Sebik, Gene Sebik and Pat Sebik; and several nieces and nephews.

Memory of Chad Robert Kovar

The membership of SPJST Lodge 79, Corpus Christi extends its heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed brother, W.C. "BILL" REGMUND, who passed away on Sunday, September 18, 1994, in Bryan, Texas, where he had resided for the past 16 years.

Prior to moving to Bryan, Bill and his family lived in Corpus Christi for many years on a stretch of Saratoga Road, known as Regmundville. Bill was the last surviving brother of the Regmund family. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Alice.

Bill was born on December 17, 1912, in Brazos County, Texas. He was a graduate of Texas A & M University with a degree in Architectural Engineering and worked for Central Iron Works in Waco and later for Samsco in Corpus Christi until retiring in 1978.

He maintained his membership in Sokol Corpus Christi and SPJST Lodge 79, which his parents helped organize and the Regmund family supported all through the years. He also belonged to the A & M Club.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Annie Regmund of Bryan, Texas; three sons: W.C. Regmund, Jr. of Olympia, Washington; Thomas Regmund and wife Julie of Fort Worth; and George Regmund of Houston; and one sister, Annie Regmund of Corpus Christi, Texas.

Services were held Wednesday, September 21 at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan, Texas, with Rev. Nick Morris officiating. Burial followed in Smetana Cemetery. The family asked memorials to be made to Ormand Bayou Nature Center, P.O. Box 58828, Houston, Texas 77258.

Chad Robert Kovar, 19, of Lodge 9, Snook passed away on Sunday, July 24, 1994, following an automobile accident.

Chad was the 1991-92 State and District One SPJST Scholarship Recipient and was the runner-up State King in 1991.

He was involved in the SPJST youth programs of Lodge 9 where he served as President and Vice President of the youth club as well as being active in District One activities.

Services were held at 10 a.m. on July 26 at the Snook Brethren Church with burial in the Snook Cemetery. A prayer service was held at 7 p.m. on July 25 at Strickland Funeral Home in Somerville.

Chad Kovar Reverend Joseph Polasek and Reverend Henry Beseda officiated at the services.

Chad was a lifelong resident of Snook.

He was a member of the Snook Brethren Church where he served as Communion Steward, Assistant Superintendent of the Sunday School and was active in the Brethren Youth Fellowship.

He graduated from Snook High School in May 1993 as salutatorian.

During high school, he was a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council and Future Farmers of America.

He was active in sports playing basketball, baseball and track. Chad served as chairman of the local and county 4-H Clubs and the Burleson County Interstate Exchange Program. He was awarded a 4-H Foundation Scholarship and a Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Scholarship for his outstanding work in 4-H. Chad had just completed his first year at Texas A & M University where he was majoring in agricultural development.

Chad will be remembered for his love for family and friends, his interest in farming and tractors, his work in the church and community and his happy attitude and smile.

Chad is survived by his parents, Larry and Yvonne Kovar of Snook; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Kathryn Kovar of Snook and Loree and Justin Lewis of Snook; paternal grandparents, Edwin and Ruth Kovar of Snook; maternal grandmother, Ella Jakubik of Snook; and greatgrandmother, Emilie Marek of Caldwell.

They are all members of the SPJST.

Brother Arthur was employed at the Veteran's Administration Medical Center as a dietetic supervisor for many years before retiring in 1979. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. He was a third and fourth degree Knight of the Knights of Columbus. He worked with the D.A.V., W.G. Lawrence Chapter No. 3, of American Legion Post No. 121.

Brother Arthur was an SPJST Lodge 66, Waco member since February 1970.

He was a very dedicated and supportive member—helpful in any capacity as a need arose. He was elected as Fraternalist of the Year and was a board member for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Alice of Waco; one daughter, Donna Baker of Waco; one son, Charles Ray Langlotz of Palestine; one sister, Dorothy Teifert of Los Angeles, California; one brother, Bernard Langlotz of Indianapolis, Indiana; and four grandchildren.

Josef Blazek Josef Blazek's short memoir, published in the 1906 issue of Amerikan narodni kalendar, provides yet another example of anticlericalism and suggests the importance of Czech-American fraternal clubs and societies in Texas.

As a child, Josef Blazek loved to read.

Although much of his reading was limited to catechism, religious tracts and school readers, he was fortunate enough to have a teacher, Antonin Trnka, who placed much emphasis on history and other areas of learning so his students could achieve the best possible education.

Countryman Ed. Kral taught Josef Blazek, along with several other boys, how to play brass instruments. It wasn't long before they were known far and wide as excellent musicians. Even the

Youth Letters Section Lodge 4, Hallettsville Youth Club Performs at Czech Festival Dear Youth Members, On Sunday, October 16, Lodge 4, Hallettsville participated in the annual Czech Heritage Festival in Victoria. We sang three songs: Cerna Vrana (Black Crow), A Lucha, Lucha (Over the Meadow), and Krasna Amerika.

We had fun singing in front of the crowd and enjoying the Czech exhibits.

Lodge 4, Hallettsville Youth Club Reports on October Meeting How are you all? I am fine!

On Sunday, October 16, the Czech Heritage Festival was held in Victoria.

The youth members from our lodge sang Czech songs there. Many people were at the festival. It seemed like everyone had fun.

The week before the festival, we went to the museum in Victoria to look at all the old-timey stuff. Afterwards, we headed out to the park for a picnic. At the park, we practiced our songs and finished our Vestnik projects.

Dear Readers, The Snook Youth Club had a truck float in the Burleson County Fair Parade

on September 17. We decorated Mia Kovar's parent's truck and rode in the parade. That was fun.

We also participated in the Educational Exhibit at the fair. We set up our exhibit on Tuesday, September 20. It was called "Joining Hands and Hearts." We received a first place ribbon.

Dear Vestnik Readers, The Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club met on Wednesday, July 6 at 3 p.m. at the

Taiton Community Center for their monthly meeting.

Jeanine Dorotik, Vice President, conducted the meeting. Flag Bearers Curtis Dorotik and Rachel Dluhos led the club in the Pledge, prayer, and SPJST motto.

Secretary Sarah Dluhos read the minutes and noted 23 members present. Valerie

Roye gave the treasurer's report and Michael 'Caspar gave the dues report.

A report was given by the teen members attending the Leader-in-Training (LIT) retreat at Camp Lone Star in La Grange on June 3-5. Youth members also shared their great time from District Six camp in La Grange on June 17-19.

Youth Club Reports on October Activities On October 14, our youth club went to Six Flags for Fright Fest. We really had fun because it was rainy and there was not a crowd at Six Flags. We rode all of the rides several times and we were spooked in the haunted houses. We left about the time the scary zombies came out to play.

On October 22, we dressed up in Halloween costumes and took candy to the Mood y Nursing Home. We really brightened the patients' day.

Just a reminder that on November 2 we are pickirnz, up the trash off the sides of the highway. Bring your gloves and pickup sticks and show up at 2 p.m.

Our next meeting is November 20.

Due to the mother lodge elections, our youth meeting will begin at 1 p.m. The youth are bringing two can goods per child for a Thanksgiving donation.

Youth Club Reports on August Meeting Dear Members and Readers, The Lodge 88, Houston youth club had a "Back to School Party" on Friday, August 19. We met at 3 p.m. and had swim time in the lodge pool until 7 p.m.

Mr. Nat and Paul grilled hamburgers by the gazebo. They were very good. Some of the youth and also me and my sisters had already started school earlier that week, but we came and had a great time.

We look forward to doing this again next summer.

Lodge 88, Houston ll th Club El joys unted H se Dear Members and Readers, We had 15 people attend our annual outing to a Haunted House. We went to the "Temple of Doom" on Saturday, October 15. We met at the haunted house and after our tour, we decided we needed to see another haunted house.

Several youth members went out to dinner while the others decided where we would go next. After checking the newspapers, it was decided we would go to downtown Houston to the "Haunted House II." It was much more scarier than the first haunted house.

What Lodge 177, Academy Youth Club Reports on October Activities The Lodge 177, Academy Youth Club had a busy weekend on October 15 and 16.

On Saturday, October 15, we went to Lodge 47, Seaton for their carnival. The District Two lock-in was after the carnival. I enjoyed the games, especially the haunted house. We had fun at the lock-in, too.

The next day, we performed two acts at the First Annual Seniors Citizens Day at Academy. I won a door prize. Then. I went home and slept.

Panf Lillian Divoka rozend Dobegova se narodila 24.ffjna 1891 u Moravie nedaleko Schulenbergu v Texasu. Sem se pfistehovali jejf rodiee ze Stfftezi, blfzko Roinova pod Radhogtem ve Stare vlasti. Sebou si pfivezli z Evropy jednoroenf dceru Frantig ku; v Texasu se jim narodil syn Ludvik a etyfi dal gf dcery: Emilie, Albfna, Aneika a Milly (Lillian), ktere je venovana tato vzpomfnka.

Lillian Dobeg ova vychodil a zakladnf gkolu na Bile hofe a v Moravii a pak 'ila u pffbuznych v Chicagu, kde absolvovala stfednf gkolu (High School). Tu se seznamila s Johnem (Janem) Divokym, ktery, pfijel s rodiei ze Stare vlasti ye \tau 13 let. John se vyueil v Chicagu
