SPTST members participate in international exhibition

Prague Slet attracts 24,000 Sokols by Sylvia Laznovsky The first Sokol Slet in Prague, Czech Republic, since 1948 was held July 2 - 6. The Slet exhibition was held at Strahov Stadium, the largest stadium in the world—equivalent to the size of eight football fields. Sokol, which means "falcon" in Czech was formed in 1862 to raise the consciousness of Czechs as a natiortat a time when their lands were still part of the Hapsburg Empire. Sokol's founders believed that the nation couldn't survive without a physically, mentally and morally fit population—and the way to achieve this was through sports—especially through gymnastics and calisthenics. And while Sokol has long been a training ground for many top gymnasts and other athletes, the emphasis at the 1994 Slet (gathering of falcons) was on participation rather than competition. Several Texans—most who are SPJST members—participated in the week-long exhibition. Representing the units of Sokol Zizka (Dallas), Sokol Karel Havlicek Borovsky (Ennis), and Sokol Fort Worth were Larry Laznovsky, Libbie Vrla, Vlasta Laznovsky, Sylvia Laznovsky, Jerry Milan, Henrietta Milan, Rome Milan, Joe Vrzalik, B.J. Cleveland, Carolyn Cleveland, Carolyn Whitely, Sharon Connally, Roy Alhom, Lydia Alhom, Joe Ehrenberger, and Johnny Kebrele.

The group participated in the Loyal Guard number, which featured 3,520 men and women gymnasts from Sokol units over the globe. Larry Laznovsky, Jerry Milan, Rome Milan, and Joe Vrzalik played on the American Sokol Volleyball Team. The group also participated in three days of rehearsals, the Slet Parade through Prague, and two performances of the Slet program which included more than 24,000 participants. The American Sokol delegation was rep-

resented by approximately 250 active participants. The three and one-half mile parade through the winding streets of Prague was an emotional highlight. Thousands lined the streets. The American Sokol delegation was the lead unit in the parade. Marchers wore grey skirts and slacks, white blouses and shirts, blue blazers, and blue caps. They marched proudly behind the American flag.
