SPJST applauds Top Producers for September We recognize and applaud our 24 Top .Producers for September. Our production for September was 99 applications for $2.6 million of insurance. Year-todate production is 899 applications for approximately $22.6 million of insurance.

This month, special recognition goes to Leonard Jansa for being the top insurance producer. We also want to feature our month's superstars, Frank Pajestka, Jr. and Charles Garrett.

Special recognition of the winners of the three-month Quarterback Club will appear in the next issue of the Vestnik. •

Dorothy Tomasek Administrative Assistant to the Secretary-Treasurer Insurance Claims Department 42 Years of Service

In her position as Administrative Assistant, Sister Tomasek is responsible for supervising the underwriting and processing of all insurance claims. She is also responsible for filing various reports and correspondence.

As insurance claims underwriter, Dorothy verifies and approves payment on insurance claims as they are received by the Home Office. In addition, she assists SPJST members with certificate loans and surrenders. She also provides administrative support in the processing of mortgage lending applications.

Dorothy is a graduate of Temple High School. She also attended Temple Junior College and completed various seminars through Republic National Life Insurance Company and Baylor University. Over the years she has also participated in a variety of office skills workshops and SPJST training classes.

"When I came to work for the SPJST, the Home Office was still in Fayetteville," says Sister Tomasek, who signed on with the SPJST in September of 1952.

"I've had the pleasure of working

closely with four supervisors—Mr. John F. Chupick, Mr. R.A. Urbanovsky, Mr. Leonard D. Mikeska and my present boss and associate, Lanita Anglin," she says.

Dorothy, who is a 50-year member of the SPJST, is a member of Lodge 47, Seaton. Over the years, she has participated in many SPJST fraternal activities and programs, including her lodge's annual picnic, State Youth Achievement Day Contests, Royalty Competitions and Christmas caroling.

"I enjoy my job here at SPJST," she says. "We provide a very important service for our members.

It's a good feeling knowing that in some way, I've been able to help deliver that service to our members."

In addition to enjoying her work, Sister Tomasek is devoted to her family. She, and her husband, Charlie, have one daughter, Theresa Entrop; and "three precious grandchildren," Justin Lee Pole, Christopher Ryan Entrop and Amanda Nicole Entrop.

Dorothy says she is an outdoor person and enjoys working in the yard and taking care of her grandchildren. She also plays the organ and piano.

"It's a good feeling knowing that in some way, I've been able to help deliver service to our members."

Lodge 161, Jourdanton to Host District Seven Family Fun Day on October 23

The 1994 SPJST State Volleyball Tournament will be held on Saturday, November 19, 1994 at 10 a.m. at the Bruceville-Eddy High School Gym, approximately 17 miles north of Temple on 1-35.

Local lodges planning to participate in the tournament are asked to notify State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Frank Klinkovsky as to how many teams are planning to enter. Get this information in to the Home Office no later than November 5.

Lodge 18, Elgin Reports on September Meeting Lodge 18, Elgin held its regular meeting on September 20 at 7:40 p.m. at the lodge hall with 19 members present. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by President Dale Kessel. All officers were present except Alice Kovar. President Kessel gave the treasurer's report due to Alice's absence.

The bar report was given by Leslie Gustafson. George Liardon reported lodge membership of 617 members. A report on ticket sales was delivered by Gladys Mogonye.

The dance scheduled for November 12 has been cancelled. New schedule cards will be out for the coming weekend.

Members will be decorating the hall for the Christmas holidays on December 5. Anyone wishing to help, please do so, as it takes hours to do a beautiful job.

A "Christmas Party Dance" will he held on December 11. The lodge will not provide food for the party as it has in the past years due to work involved. Every one is welcome to bring their "goodies" to their table to enjoy during the dance and after.

Several members from Lodge 18 attended the Fall District Meeting in Holland. The 1995 Spring District Two Meeting will be held in Round Rock. A donation of $50 was given for the Spring Meeting from Lodge 18.

Correspondence was read. Sympathy and get well cards were sent. Liquor liability insurance was discussed.

Dollie Hajda was elected reporter for the lodge.

Members on the sick list are Emil Mogonye, Edgar Schroeder and Adele Simank. God bless all of you for a speedy recovery.

Lodge 48, Beyersville to Host Progressive "42" Tournament Attention "42" Players, SPJST Lodge No. 48, Beyersville will hold a Progressive "42" Domino Tournament on Saturday, October 29th at the hall located about five miles out of Taylor on Highway 619. The registration fee is $10 per person and includes the noon meal, snacks and prizes.

Registration will be from 8:15 to 9 a.m. and play will begin at 9:15 a.m.

We will play 15 games with a 20-minute time limit for each game. The tournament should end around 4:30 p.m.

A partner is not necessary because you will draw for a partner and extra players will fill in if necessary. Please preregister so we can estimate food!

32, Victoria Reports on September Meeting Lodge

Lodge 32 met on September 14th with President Wayne Spiller conducting the meeting.

Please say "yes" when you get a call asking for a cake . . . Once again, our lodge will have a cake walk at the Czech Heritage Society Festival on Sunday, October 16th.

We have always had a good response and we hope for the same this year. We are sharing our booth with Sister Lodge 97, Placedo. They will be responsible for the cake walk on Saturday as the Fest is two days this year. So, pre-heat your oven and be ready to bake!

Christmas Dinner This may seem a bit early to you, but start making plans to attend our Christmas dinner and meeting. The date will be December 14, which is our regular meeting night. We will go to, a local restaurant and enjoy the holiday season.

If you have attended half of the meetings held in 1994, you and your spouse will have your meal provided by the lodge. If not, this will be "Dutch treat." After a brief meeting, (election and installation of officers), we will have a social time with dominoes and any other game you might want to play.

Wishes for a speedy recovery are extended to Nelson Arnold who was recently hospitalized. We also hope that Franklin Elles is "walking like new"— what a knee!

Don't forget about our upcoming Polka-Waltz Fest at the Inez Hall on February 12th.

Lodge 79, Corpus Christi Reports on September Meeting Our Lodge 79 monthly meeting was held on Sunday, September 18. There were eight members present. A moment of silence was observed for a recently departed friend, Anne Elzner Spencer, a past lodge secretary and youth leader.

She was also Jerry Elzner's sister.

The minutes from the August meeting were read and approved. Our member-

ship accepted Patricia Lynn Johnson and Bruce L. Kmgman as new members.

It was announced that the Fall Meeting and Fun Day would be held October 23 in Jourdanton. Seven of our members plan on attending. An invitation was also read and posted for the State Fair of Texas Czech Day celebration.

We will soon have an SPJST bulletin board in our lodge hall. All SPJST/Youth Club information can be displayed on the board. Keep your eyes open!

The SPJST "100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive" begins on October 1. Let's save our pennies and show our young people we care and think they are special.

Our lodge's nominee for "Fraternalist of the Year 1994" is Jerry Elzner. He and his family are presently visiting the Czech Republic. We have received a post card from him and thank him for remembering us.

September's charitable donation of $50 will go to Metro Ministries. They do a lot for those who are out of work, homeless or down on their luck.

Sister Glenda Elzner, our FAC, reminds us that our service report forms are due to her.

80, Holland Reports on September and October Meetings

Dear Members and Friends, The monthly meeting of Lodge 80, Holland was called to order on Sunday, September 11 with President Harold Rohde presiding.

Brother Glen Latham read the minutes of the preceding meeting and they were approved.

Brothers Rohde and Latham discussed the upcoming District Two Meeting that would he held the next weekend. Cakes were also needed for the evening meal.

A new game board has been added on the south wall of the hall for game night.

Sister Pauline Kopecky and Brother Otto Horelica were reported doing fine after surgery. Brother Otto works behind the bar at every function and is being missed by all. Hope you are doing fine— you, too, Sister Kopecky.

Vice President G.L. Brisbin was the only member who attended the meeting who had a birthday in September. Door prize winners were Doris Eckerman, Barbara Taisler, Estelle Goodnight, Rick Benner, and Harold Rohde.

Rick Benner moved for adjournment.

The motion was seconded by Coleman Benner.

October Meeting The October meeting of Lodge 80, Holland was called to order at 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 1, 1994 by President Harold Rohde. After the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for departed members, Brother Glen Latham stated that all officers were present. He

then read the minutes from the previous meeting, and they were approved.

A thank you from St. Cyril and Methodius Church in Granger was read for the $100 donation to their bazaar.

All committee reports were fine, with all doing a great job.

Eddie and Isabell Kunz, who were celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary, were in attendance at the meeting. They never miss a meeting— if possible.

Brother Otto Horelicia was in attendance following his recent eye surgery.

We were glad to see you.

Vice President G.L. (Pee Wee) Brisbin discussed the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive and distributed information.

New members accepted into the lodge were Matthew, Rosellen, and Mitchell Wooley.

Members voted to make a donation to the Mayfield Library Benefit auction.

The library will hold a dinner, dance and auction on Saturday, October 8, at the lodge hall.

President Rohde thanked those who made the District Two Meeting a success.

The lodge and the district were both well represented at the meeting.

Sister Glenda Liles announced that she will not run for Financial Secretary in the next election. We know Glenda will he greatly missed and wish her the best.

President Rohde stated that we will either need someone to take over the job or go to direct billing from the Supreme Lodge.

So, the November meeting is important for all to attend because it will include the election of officers and the option of going to direct billing. The meeting will be called to order at 2 p.m. on November 6, 1994.

The December meeting will be on December 4 at 3 p.m. with snacks to follow. Also, mark your December calendar for December 17 for the annual Christmas party.

Those in attendance with birthdays were Joe Sumbera, Coleman Benner, and Carl Klotz.

88, Houston Birthday Club, Lodge Reports on September Meeting Lodge

On September 14, 1994, the club meeting was held at Lodge 88.

President Lowrina Lindemann opened the meeting at 11 a.m. with the roll call.

Rita Alexander read the minutes from the August meeting which were approved as read.

Treasurer Lillie Spies gave the financial report.

Our sick members are Estelle Kelly, Margie Anders, Pearl Hanka (had tests made), Lillie Spies had a bad case of the "shingles" but she is improving. That is a very uncomfortable ailment. Excuse me if I left out someone. I didn't mean to.

We had a very pleasant surprise when our dear friend, Lillian Finn, who lives in Dickinson, came to our meeting. Her grandson brought her. She asked to speak to us, which was nice, because so many of our members did not know Lillian when she was so very active.

When things at the Birthday. Club looked bleak, she would pick up and start some kind of successful money-raising project.

Harry, her husband, was a great help to her. We appreciate Lillian's visit and miss her very much. Do this again, Lillian. She also gave a nice donation to us, which we really appreciate.

Tillie Bily has been sick for some time and has not been able to come to our meetings. Remember her by sending her a card. I also thought about Willie Mae Stang, who was in the hospital. She is doing fine now. God bless you all.

We had some real good cooks in September. They were Margie Anders, Mrs. Gutkowski, who is a new member, and Alice Bily.

On October 19, we will have a dinner at Heights Bayou Bend.

The Calcutta Game was won by Jo Burl and Bessie Dewer.

We then adjourned after a prayer by Mary Kosut.

Dear Readers, My apologies for failure to mention the surgery of a very important member– Sister Evelyn Novotny, our lodge president. Sister Evelyn had knee surgery.

She is recuperating nicely and it is great to see her at our activities again.

Many wishes for a speedy recovery to Brother Ladis Novotny, Evelyn's husband. Ladis is in the VA Hospital in Dallas where he had surgery. We understand he is progressing well. We look forward to seeing him home soon.

Brother Frank Laznovsky, our treasurer, had successful cataract surgery. Hope I did not miss anyone this time!

161, La Parita, Jourdanton Holds Quarterly Meeting

Lodge

SPJST Lodge 161, La Parita of Jourdanton, held its quarterly meeting on September 11, 1994, at the Civic Center with 14 members and two guests present.

President Milton Koch called the meeting to order and welcomed all. He said it looked like everyone was a little perkier since we finally got some rain! The Pledge of Allegiance was said, followed by a brief moment of silence for departed

Sister Mary Ermis. Also remembered were Sister Mildred Bridges and Sister Gussie Spacek, who are both recovering from hip surgery.

Brother Ernest Spacek gave a lovely table prayer before we adjourned for our noon meal. (President Koch and Vice President Valchar picked up our meal at Double C BBQ Restaurant near Pleasanton.)

President Koch reconvened our meeting and asked if everyone had enough to eat. He then asked District Seven Director Bob Bayer if he would like to say a few things.

Brother Bayer said he likes to attend local lodge meetings in the district, see local lodges in operation and let them know that the Supreme Lodge is interested. He reported that our lodge had four new members (Sister Tillie Koch said we had five new members) and that he would like to see our lodge represented at the Incentive Awards Banquet in March 1995. He also reminded us that our Fraternalist of the Year nomination needed to be in to Supreme Lodge by November 1. He also reported that a new state field representative was hired to fill a vacancy which had existed in District Three and Four.

The minutes were read by Secretary Tillie Koch, followed by the Financial Report.

Next, FAC Don Valchar read his

Lodge 91, Crosby Honors Members for Dedication and Service Members of Lodge 91, Crosby met at the Port Royale Restaurant for a noon luncheon on September 8 to honor their members for dedication and service. Three 50-year pin recipients were honored—two were in attendance. Thirty-six 50-plus year members were honored-23 were in attendance. All of the recipients received attractive certificates to mark their recognition.

Following these presentations, a "Partners in Progress" award was presented to Lodge Sales Representative June Smesny. The lodge, and indeed District Five and the entire Society, appreciates the effort Sister Smesny has applied as a top-producing sales representative. Congratulations and best wishes are extended to all of Lodge 91's 1994 honorees.

Also, he asked about having our meetings here at the Civic Center in 1995. Brother Ernest Spacek made a motion to have the Christmas Party as last year. Sister Tillie Koch seconded.

Also, if we wish to bring canned goods for the A.C.C.E.P.T. program, we are welcomed to do so.

Coast Czech Festival Set for October 22 - 23 at Lodge 172, Pasadena Gulf

Plans have been completed for the Eighth Annual Gulf Coast Festival which will be held at SPJST Lodge 172 located at 3609 Preston in Pasadena on October 22 and 23, 1994.

On Saturday, the kick-off dance begins at 8:30 p.m., featuring the music of Harry Czarnek and The Texas Dutchmen.

Kolaches and sandwiches will be available.

The Harris County Czech Heritage Society will have an exhibition of Czech Memorabilia. The SPJST Museum from Temple will also have a display. The SPJST Youth Club will have a silent auction. There will also he a country store and a White Elephant Sale.

The very popular Galveston County Czech Accordion Band will perform at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday. Dinner will be served at 11:30 a.m. as well. The afternoon program will begin at 1 p.m. with the flag presentation followed by singing of the National and Czech Anthems.

Following that, at 1:30 p.m., the Rathkamp dancers will perform. Music for dancing will be from 2 until 6 p.m. by the New Edition Orchestra.

Prices for the dances are $5 per person and the dinner is also $5 per person.

Lodge Rozkvet No.172, Pasadena Reports on September Meeting Dear SPJST Members, Lodge Rozkvet, No. 172, Pasadena held their monthly meeting on September 28 at 7:30 p.m. Prior to the meeting, a covered dish dinner was enjoyed by the 42 members present.

President Alvin Sefcik opened the meeting with a welcome in Czech and English and asked that we remember two members, Patricia Charleston and Rosalie Kulak, who passed away recently. May they rest in peace. All officers and trustees answered roll call.

Correspondence included a request for donations from several organizations.

Action was taken on them under new business. A thank you was received from Eric Zucha for the scholarship that he received from Lodge 172. A thank you card was received from Mary Byers for the memorial on behalf of Sam Malfa. In addition to being a member, Sam was a regular Saturday night dancer at our lodge until he became ill.

Lodge 172 was well-represented at the District Five meeting held in Crosby.

Everyone enjoyed the fine dinner and excellent meeting conducted by Evelyn Mikeska. We all enjoyed the fraternal socializing and seeing our State Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas, with the latest information from the Supreme Lodge.

All reports were accepted as read and corrected from various officers and committee persons. Joe Krenek advised us that a work party day would be October 3 rind_ that quite a bit of work would be accomplished.

The members elected Willie Walla as our Fraternalist of the Year. There is no other member more deserving than Willie.

Brother Walla never says much, but he accomplishes a lot. Lodge 172 will be proud to have Willie representing them.

A scholarship check was awarded to Anne Buchta by Vice President Robert Mayfield. It was accepted by her grandfather, Louis Hrabina.

The By-Law Committee members elected for 1994 are Tennie Walla, Harold Wolf, and Jerry Dressler.

The remuneration members elected were Robert Mayfield and J.B. Thomas.

We had several guests attending our meeting, including our District Five Director Louis Hanus.

The Gulf Coast Czech Festival Committee will meet on October 12 at 7 p.m. Our next lodge meeting will be on October 26 at 7:30 p.m.

177, Academy Extends Invitation to Senior Citizens' Day Lodge

Dear Readers, Lodge 177, Academy will be hosting its first-ever Senior Citizens' Day at the lodge hall on Sunday, October 16, 1994.

The program starts at 2:45 p.m.

Everybody —and not just senior citi-

zens—is invited.

The program includes a variety of performers and dancing including appearances by Gabrielle's Studio, Kitchen Combo, Harvest You're All House Tappers, Invited The Polka This Sunday!

Dancers and the Academy SPJST Youth Club. There will also be a free dance with music by Charles and the Swingmasters.

Prizes will be awarded in several categories, including awards for the "Oldest Man," "Oldest Woman," "Longest Married Couple," and "Greatest Distance Traveled (man and woman)."

Our September meeting was opened

by Louis Grochoski. A moment of silence was observed for our departed members. All officers reports were good.

Joyce Russell reported that the lodge presented a $300 donation to the Muscular Dystrophy Association and that school supplies were given to four needy school children.

New members accepted were Joe Alvin Russell and Rebecca Russell.

Everyone enjoyed our anniversary social. It was nice to visit with people not seen for a long time. The food was good—especially the homemade ice cream. Thanks to all who participated.

187, Round Rock Hosts "Tip Party" Sunday, October 23 Lodge

It is that time again for Lodge 187, Round Rock's semi-annual "Tip Party." It will be on Sunday, October 23. The general meeting will be at 2 p.m. with the party beginning at approximately 3 p.m.

This party is for all volunteers who have generously given their time to work at the hall since the last tip party. The booster clubs are also invited to attend.

The Youth Club would appreciate if members would bring cakes or any other pastries for the cake walk, items for the country store, and/or items for the silent auction.

Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Academy SPJST Lodge No. 177, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest and sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge sister, DOROTHY MASSEY, who passed away September 26, 1994 in a Temple hospital at the age of 68.

She was born in Abilene to John Thomas Dix and Lillian Fish Dix and moved to Temple from Coleman. She was a salesperson for the Singer Sewing Machine Center and served as a past state youth leader for SPJST. She owned Uniforms Plus and worked for Schlotzsky's Sandwich Shop, from which she retired. She was a member of the First Christian Church, the ABWA Dawson Charter Oak Chapter and Academy SPJST Lodge 177.

Survivors are her mother, Lillian Dix of Fort Worth; a daughter, Bettye Hawk of Temple; three brothers, Lowell Dix of Burleson, Don Dix of Belton, and Jerry Dix of Fort Worth; and two grandchildren.

Services were held at 2 p.m.

Wednesday, September 29, 1994 at Sheffield Funeral Home in Temple, with the Rev. Dave Fischer officiating. Burial was in North Belton Cemetery.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 10 at Arlington Funeral Home. Graveside services were at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 10 in Morgan Mill Cemetery. Mr. Spindor moved to Morgan Mill as a child. He was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II. Brother Spindor was a charter member of Webb Masonic Lodge 1454 in Arlington, A.F.&A.M. where he received the Golden Trowel award. He was a charter member of the Fort Worth Scottish Rite Bodies, a member of Moslah Shrine Temple in Fort Worth, and a member of York Rite Bodies in Arlington 376 RAM, Arlington York Rite Council, Arlington Commandery 107. He was also a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8561 in Arlington, and a member of SPJST Lodge No. 92.

Survivors are his wife, Elwanda Spindor of Arlington; a son, John Spindor, Jr. of Fort Worth; a daughter, Susan Ward of Duncanville; three brothers, Caso Spindor of Stephenville, Earl Spindor of Fort Worth; and Elmer Spindor of Saginaw; two sisters, Lillie Hoyt of Arlington and Mary Burch of Fort Worth; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

West, by Rev. Melvin Dornak.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10:15 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption with Rev. Melvin Dornak and Rev. B.J. Zientek co-celebrating. Burial followed in St. Mary's Cemetery near West.

Mr. Pavlas was born February 8, 1902, in Praha, Texas, the son of Felix and Frances Pavlas. He married Lillie Matus on July 10, 1922, in West. She preceded him in death on October 8, 1985. He was a farmer all his life before retiring in 1983. He was a member of the SPJST Lodge No. 6 in Cottonwood and a member of the K.J.T. Society No. 31 in West.

He was also a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West.

He is survived by two daughters, Lillie Smajstrla and her husband, George, and Annie Hlovenka and her husband, Richard, all of West; one brother, Victor Pavlas, of Abbott; two granddaughters, Denise Muska and Suzanne Ferrero and her husband, Larry, all of West; two great-grandsons, Brian Muska and Dean Muska, both of West; and several nieces and nephews.

Sister Dorsey was born in the Edge community and had lived in Bryan since 1940. She was a homemaker and a salesperson at Bealls Department Store in Bryan. In addition to being a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, she was a member of American Legion Auxiliary Earl Graham Post 159 and the AARP. She was preceded in death by her husband, A.J. Dorsey, in 1985.

Survivors include one son, Robert Dorsey of Bryan; two daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Ed Thielemann of North Richland Hills and Marie and John Gerdes of San Antonio; one brother, Robert Mikulec of Gause; three sisters, Nina Quitta of College Station, Doris Kolar of Bryan, and Betty Mikulec of Hearne; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

of Sympathy On behalf of the entire membership of East Bernard, Karel Jonas, Lodge No. 28, we, the Resolution Committee, wish to express our deepest and sincere sympathy to the family of our departed brother, JOHN JAMES BARTOS. Mr. Bartos, 82, of East Bernard, died September 26, 1994, at Memorial Hospital Southwest in Houston. Funeral services were held at Davis Chapel in East Bernard at 2 p.m. Thursday, September 29. Wake service and rosary were Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m. at Davis Chapel in East Bernard. Father Gerard Cernoch officiated and Rick Kristynik served as lector.

Mr. Bartos was born January 26, 1912,

in Flatonia, the second son of John and Eleanora Bartos. He was reared and attended school in the East Bernard area and married Annie Janik on November 26, 1933. They farmed in the Bernard Prairie Community until 1977, when he retired due to ill health. He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, East Bernard and SPJST Lodge No. 28 since March 4, 1940.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 61 years, Annie Bartos; one son, Simon, and his wife, Joyce, of Rosenberg; one daughter, Elizabeth Barta, and her husband, Jerome, of Cedar Park; four grandchildren: Sharon Kristynik and husband Rick of Rosenberg, Scott Bartos and wife Susan of New Braunfels, and Mark and Gary Barta of Cedar Park; three grandchildren: Kyle and Ryan Kristynik of Rosenberg and Samantha Bartos of New Braunfels; one sister, Frances Matej of Federal Way, Washington; five brothers: Joe of Schulenburg, Jim of Wallis, Florian of Sugar Land, and Henry and Steve, both of Houston.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Stanley Bartos.

Pallbearers were Adolph Janik, Edwin Janik, Ben Bartos, Donald Bartos, Victor Kubena and Rudy Barta Jr. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to American Heart Fund, American Cancer Society or Holy Cross Catholic Church.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Davis Funeral Home in East Bernard .

Expression of Sympathy The membership of SPJST Lodge 135, Ennis, expresses its heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed brother, MARVIN J. PATAK. Marvin died Friday, September 23, 1994 at the age of 39, at his home in Ennis following a short illness. He was born April 4, 1955, in Ennis, the son of Alphonse R. and Ella J. Pouzar Patak.

He was reared in Ennis and graduated from. Ennis High School in 1973.

On April 22, 1978, Marvin married Susan E. Brazil of Ennis. After their marriage, they made their home in Ennis, where he was employed by the Cody Co. In 1980, he began his partnership in Cody Air Conditioning in Hurst. Marvin was a member of the First Methodist Church in Ennis. He was also a member of SPJST Lodge 135, WFLA Lodge 402, and Sokol in Ennis.

Marvin is survived by his wife; a son, John Michael Patak; a daughter, Lauren Patak; his parents Alphonse and Ella Patek; and a sister, Denise Patak.

Funeral services, under the direction of Keever Funeral Home, were held on September 27, at the First United Methodist Church in Ennis with the Dr. James Abel officiating. Internment was in Myrtle Cemetery, Ennis.

Reunions Orsak Family Reunion In December of 1869, Joseph Orsak, with his wife, Apolona, and daughter, Anna, age 2, left Karlovice, Moravia for Galveston, Texas to settle in Fayetteille, Texas. The descendants of this Czech family will gather in El Campo at the American Legion Auxiliary Hall on Highway 71 South at 10 a.m. to celebrate the 44th annual reunion on Sunday, October 16, 1994.

Please bring a meat and vegetable or pastry dish. Coffee, tea and tableware will be furnished. Please notify all Orsak families and relatives to attend.

to Host Czech Heritage Festival

The Victoria County Czech Heritage Society extends an invitation to Vestnik readers to come and help celebrate their Tenth Czech Heritage Festival on Saturday and Sunday, October 15 and 16 at the Victoria Community Center at 2905 East North Street in Victoria.

Entertainment and music will be heard throughout the day. Several groups, including the Lodge 4, Hallettsville Youth Club and the Lodge 97, Placedo Youth Club are scheduled to perform.

The Lee Roy Matocha Orchestra will play from noon until 4 p.m. on Sunday and the Bobby Jones Czech Band will play from 4 until 8 p.m. on Sunday.

Czech Day at Texas State Fair Sunday, October 16, 1994 will be the Annual Czech Day Celebration at the State Fair of Texas. The celebration, which begins at 9 a.m., will be held in the Special Events Tent located near the Grand Avenue entrance to the Fairgrounds.

Scheduled to perform are the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra under the direction of Cyril! "Sid" Pokladnik and the Dallas Czech Singers under the direction of Bob Liska. Traditional Czech folk dances will be performed by the youth and adults of Lodge 84, Dallas.

Special awards will be given to the Czech-American King and Queen (oldest gentleman and lady) and the longest married couple of Czech descent. An exhibition of athletic prowess will be presented

by SOKOL organizations on the Marine Drill Field. The Sulak Brothers will also perform..

Youth Letters Section District Two Lock-In Scheduled October 15 at Lodge 47, Seaton Dear Members, District Two will be having another fun-filled activity this Saturday, October 15. We will be having a lock-in beginning on Saturday, October 15 and ending on Sunday, October 16 at Lodge 47, Seaton.

The Seaton Youth Club will be sponsoring a Halloween Carnival earlier that evening which will begin at 5 p.m.

Admission for all games, etc. will be $2.

Hamburgers will be sold. The carnival is open to the public. District Two members are invited to come early for the carnival and stay until the next morning.

Parents are asked to have youth picked up by 9 a.m. on Sunday.

Youth leaders met Saturday, October 1 to make plans for the evening. Plans are being made for a possible hayride. There will be a variety of movies, games, relays, and crafts. Door prizes will be given. There will also be a special drawing in the wee hours of the morning for those still awake. And maybe even a drawing for those asleep.

Each member may bring a friend or two. Each youth club has been assigned a snack. Drinks and pizza will be furnished by the district. Check with your youth leader if you have any questions.

This activity is open to all members of District Two and any youth members of other districts. We would love for you to join us. We are in need of chaperones.

Parents, you are invited to come and spend the evening with us. We promise you will have a great time.

Activities begin with the carnival at 5 p.m. You may come at any time. If you plan to come and will be arriving later than 8 p.m., please let me know.

Bring your sleeping bag, games, fun ideas, and a lot of energy on Saturday to Seaton Star Hall for hours and hours of good food and fun.

Six Youth Enjoy Summer Tour of Galveston Island

Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club Reports on September Events

Dear Vestnik Readers, On July 8, 1994, District Six, consisting of Lodge 4, Hallettsville; Lodge 28, East Bernard; Lodge 30, Taiton; Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje; and Lodge 97, Placedo, took their annual summer tour.

A bus was chartered to transport the youth and adults of District Six. This year's tour took youth members and adults to Galveston Island where they were able to see and do many fun things.

Upon arriving in Galveston, District Six toured the Railroad Museum and then took in the sights of Strand Street. For lunch it was off to Sea Wolf Park where everyone enjoyed a picnic lunch. Not only did we enjoy lunch but so did quite a few sea gulls, as the youth had a great time feeding the birds flying above. At Sea Wolf Park, the group toured a World War II submarine and battleship and saw first hand, the living quarters of servicemen during the war.

The next stop was Moody Gardens where the group took a cruise aboard the "Colonial," a Victorian-styled paddle wheel boat, which toured the Galveston Bay. The day was concluded with a supper of one's choice along Seawall Boulevard.

The group also enjoyed a stroll along the beach of the Sea Wall before returning home.

I want to thank all of the chaperones who attended and my assistant, Karen Kaspar, for helping oversee the whole day. I would especially like to thank all of the youth for being so well-behaved throughout the day. It is really great working with such wonderful youth as yourselves because you make my job so much easier and the day so much nicer. I hope everyone had a great time and I look forward to next year's tour.

On September 10, we sponsored a water booth at the Kolache Festival held in Caldwell. On September 11, we held a

Grandparents' Day Program at the Snook Brethren Church and we had a really good attendance.

On September 17, younger members, with the help of their mothers, had a float in the Burleson County Fair Parade. A number of our club members exhibited craft and animal entries in the County Fair held September 21-24. Thanks to all members for your hard work.

47, Seaton Youth Club Extends Invitation to Halloween Carnival Lodge

Dear Readers, On October 15, the Lodge 47 Youth Club will have its annual Halloween Carnival, followed by the District Two Lock-In. The carnival will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. There will be many games, a costume contest and coloring contest, and our ever famous "Flaunted House." The kitchen will be open for purchase of hamburgers, French fries, nachos, or frito pie. Admission will he $2 at the door. We hope to see all of you there.

Last month, the lodge held a membership drive. I am proud to welcome Ty Horton, who joined our youth club in September. We hope to see you at many meetings and youth club functions.

Many current youth club members of our lodge have missed several meetings and functions lately. I would like to invite you all back and to become active again, so that our youth club will continue to grow.

88, Houston Member Receives Achievement Award Lodge

Jennifer Schimcek, a member of Lodge 88, Houston, has been named a United States National Award winner in Spanish and Leadership by the United States Achievement Academy. The Academy recognizes less than 10 percent of all Jennifer Schimcek American high school students.

Jennifer attends Scarborough Senior High School. She is the daughter of Manuel and Joylene Schimcek.

Her grandparents are Alex and Alhina Tarnowski of Houston, Texas, and the late Alfred and Pauline Schimcek of Weimer and Schulenburg, Texas.

The Academy selects winners upon the recommendation of teachers, coaches, counselors, or other school sponsors. The criteria for selection include the student's academic performance, interest and aptitude, leadership qualities, responsibility, enthusiasm, motivation to learn and improve, citizenship, attitude, cooperative spirit and dependability.

Dear Readers, On Saturday, October 15 the Lodge 47 Youth Club will be the place to be. We are having a Halloween Carnival. It will run from 5 until 8 p.m. There will be lots of games.
