Lodge 29, Taylor presents results of Sixth Annual Tarok Tournamen
The winners of the Sixth Annual Taylor Tarok Tournament held September 17 were: First Place - Jerry Brezina of Fort Worth; Second Place - Rudy Kaspar of Taylor; Third Place - Ruth Wuensche of Beyersville; and Fourth Place - Dan Gaida of Granger. Congratulations to all the winners.
A total of 56 players turned to play in the tournament. Fifth through eighth place winners were: Fifth Place - Ed Scaff of Fort Worth, Sixth Place - Lydia Jansen of Taylor; Seventh Place - Otto Kurtz of Fort Worth and Eighth Place - Bob Kurtin of Granger. The lodge expresses its thanks to everyone for playing in the tournament.
These Lodge 29 members made sure everyone had a good noon meal, and refreshments throughout day. The kitchen committee included, front row, Kay Matyastik, Loretta Tate, Bennie Stried, Neta Horn, Lillie Krueger and Lillian Sakewitz. As the first place winner, Jerry Brezina, left, will keep the traveling trophy for the next year. SPJST State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Frank Klinkovsky presented the trophy. Tarok Chairman Franklin Schlesinger once again provided the use of his computer and printer to provide timely updates on players standings throughout the day.
Lodge 196 member heads Houston Chapter of FICs Sister Evelyn Mikeska, FIC, a member and sales representative of Lodge 196, Houston, presided over the recent meeting of the newly formed Houston Chapter of Fraternal Insurance Evelyn Mikeska Counselors. Approximately 35 FICs, representing several major fraternal benefit societies were in attendance at the September 16 meeting which was held at the Howard Johnson Hotel in Houston. Friends mourn loss of Dorothy Massey, past State Youth Director Sister Dorothy Massey, a longtime SPJST member who served as SPJST State Youth Director from 1971 until 1980, passed away on Monday, September 26, 1994 in a Temple hospital. She was 68. During her service to the SPJST, Sister Massey established many lasting friendships. SPJST Underwriter Ruth Hanusch remembers her as a "jolly and good natured" perso "You could be down in the dumps and having a had day. She was the kind of person you could confide in. "After a few minutes with `Massey,' you'd have something to laugh about. It Dorothy Massey made you feel good to be around her." Dorothy Tomasek, assistant to the Secretary-Treasurer, agrees. "Sometimes we would go over to her house for lunch and to have a good time. She was a real character and a wonderful friend. A lot of people felt that away about her." District Three Youth Counselor Bessie Petr of Dallas was one of those people. She characterizes Sister Massey as a "great leader " and as "someone you could get close to." "Dorothy was a super person to work with and she could really relate to the children," says Sister Petr. "I respected her for that. She was such a warm and caring individual." Sister Massey was born in Abilene to John Thomas Dix and Lillian Fish Dix and moved to Temple from Coleman. In addition to her service to the SPJST, she was also a salesperson for the Singer Sewing Machine Center, owner of Uniforms Plus, and worked for Schlotzksy's Sandwich Shop, from which she retired. She was a member of the First Christian Church, the ABWA Dawson Charter Oak Chapter and SPJST Lodge 177, Academy. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil and a son, Cecil, Jr. She is survived by her mother, Lillian Dix of Fort Worth; a daughter, Bettye Hawk of Temple; three brothers, Lowell Dix of Burleson, Don Dix of Belton and Jerry Dix of Fort Worth; and two grandchildren.
