SPJST applauds August Top Producers Please join me in applauding our 21 top producers during August. They and the other sales representatives produced 103 applications for more than $2.5 million of insurance. We finished the month just short of $20 million in insurance applications this year.

We are proud to be able to feature five sales representatives in the Superstars' Circle. One of those five, Martha Broz, is the top producer for August. We also recognize Martha Broz for exceeding $2 million of applications this year.

District Four and Six both exceeded their quota of insurance written this past month. We appreciate the efforts of sales representatives in these two districts and encourage them to now work on meeting their quotas for number of applications.

On behalf of the entire Supreme Lodge, I really want to thank all of the lodges that have recognized their sales representatives in some way. There are many important jobs in every lodge and the position of sales representative is certainly important. Our sales representatives perform a vital function in providing service to our members.

Over the next few months, we will be working with the sales representatives in a number of lodges to improve the service to our members. It is our goal that every member will be assigned to a sales

What Makes Fraternals Grow?

A Determination to Grow When they meet in Temple this week, one of the objectives of our Supreme Lodge will be to "brainstorm" ideas for increasing membership and member participation in the SPJST. It's a wonderful idea and one that should generate some enlightening and far-ranging discussion. To be positioned for the future, we must find ways to provide new benefits to existing members and to explore new marketing opportunities. When we are proactive, our challenges can become opportunities.

With that thought in mind, I would like to share with you an article which previously appeared the Fraternal Monitor, a national trade publication for fraternal benefit societies. The text which which follows comes from a speech presented at the 1967 Canadian Fraternal Association meeting by Louis Probst, then the president of the Independent Order of Foresters. Today, we find ourselves asking the same question, "What makes fi-aternal societies grow?" and the late Mr. Probst's observations are as thought provoking today as they were when he offered them in answer to that question nearly 25 years ago.

than 2,000 years, we have recorded stories of societies whose noble purposes were to lighten the burdens of homes and to ease the distress of widows and orphans.

These early societies had another purpose. They recognized that man is a social animal, that he hungers for and has a need of the companionship of other men, and to fill this need, the early societies-held friendly gatherings where the principles of brotherhood could be practiced and a better understanding among their members created.

As it was then, so it is today. Our greatest asset for growth is our fraternal activities.

These activities fill a need, a definite one. With more and more leisure time today, man cannot live by bread alone.

Now, just for a moment, think if you will of the possibilities for growth factors in these meetings.

Any old line (life insurance) company's general agent would give a great deal if he could gather his policyholders together at a dance, dinner or party and have the opportunity to chat with them and to receive prospects from them. Talk about "centers of influence" ... brother, we have them built in and ready for use.

To grow, local units must enter into community affairs, give help to the less fortunate, the handicapped, the blind and so forth, not with just money but with workers. This makes your society known; it brings recognition of your good works to the community in which you operate.

In my concluding remarks, may I summarize "What Makes Fraternals Grow."

I believe it is this:

"We need to find ways to provide new benefits to existing members and to explore new marketing opportunities."

Now, what makes fraternal societies grow?

The more thought I gave to this subject, the more I realized that there is no simple criterion and, above all, there are no easy shortcuts. There are, however, some basic ingredients necessary for growth.

First, I believe there must be an earnest, sincere desire for growth on the part of top management-the president and the Board of Directors.

This desire must not be merely lip service. It must be an all-consuming desire-yes, a determination in the face of many trials and tribulations-to make our fraternal societies grow. It means that top management must become sales orientated and that orientation must filter down through every head office department.

The fraternal system, as a whole, has not kept pace with the growth of the life insurance industry. Why? My answer is that all too many of our societies have become lethargic. This way they can make money, increase surplus and dividends and thus satisfy their membership.

But the laws of attrition are at work . .

We have something-something the commercial companies have not. Our greatest asset is the fraternal system on which our societies were founded, the very principle of which is that man is his brother's keeper and that we are each responsible for our fellow man.

It was this spirit of brotherhood of man, as old as history itself, which inspired the inception of and stimulated the development of fraternal life insurance. All through the centuries, for more

We have all the attributes of the commercial life companies. We are just as safe and sound with our legal reserve certificates but, with insurance plus fraternity, we should be the first policy in every household.

Frank Klinkovsky State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Fraternal Department 6 Years of Service

In his position as State Fraternal Activities Coordinator, Brother Klinkovsky works with the President's Office to promote fraternal programming efforts throughout the state. This includes overseeing all SPJST statewide contests and tournaments as well as working with lodges to help them plan and schedule charitable and fraternal activities.

Before coming to the SPJST, Frank worked 40 years as a customer service representative for Montgomery Ward Department Store in Temple. As a top-producing salesman, he earned numerous sales incentive awards and trips. He also participated various customer service and training workshops.

A member of Lodge 47, Seaton, Frank serves as lodge president and trustee. He has also served his lodge as youth leader and vice president.

On the district level, Frank has served as District President, Treasurer and was District Two Youth Counselor for 17 years. He has also served as an active sales representative for Lodge 47, Seaton for the past 33 years.

Some of Frank's most cherished memories of his service to the Society have been working with the youth and other DYCs. "There were a lot of good times working with the young people. I would encourage families with children to get involved. It's a good, solid and fun program."

Frank and his wife, Irma, who retired from the SPJST in 1989 after 30 years of service, have one son, Frank Jr. Frank, Jr. and his wife, Debbie, have two children, Frank III and Kelli. Frank's hobbies include dancing, singing, walking, reading and tracking the stock market.

He is also in charge of monitoring lodge compliance of fraternal reporting procedures and admin istering various aspects of the SPJST's 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive, Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program, Youth Program, and Czech language instruction allocations budget.

"In my position, I do all I can to help the lodges grow and prosper," says Frank, who is a 50-year member of the SPJST. "My hope is that a century from now, future generations of members will still be out there, enjoying fraternal benefits and friendly service from their Society."

During his six years of full-time service to the SPJST, Brother Klinkovsky has participated in many SPJST fraternal and sales training seminars on the district and state level. He has also attended three fraternal training workshops sponsored by the National Fraternal Congress.

Exploring the Texas - Czech Connection

Czech Texans Return to Moravian Roots

by Sean Gallup PART TWO J.G. Hrncir walked up the village road, video camera in hand, with his wife, Janis, and two teenage children. Thousands of miles from their home in rural Texas, the Hrncirs rn had come to the oravian village of Lichnov little M to find a piece of themselves. As they approached house number two, the oldest original house in Lichnov, they saw sitting in the doorway a little figure in blue with white hair, waiting. Hedvika HrnCirova, 86, rose and took J.G.'s hand, and though neither could understand the language of the other, Mrs. Hrnarova s voice began to falter and her eyes flood.

Her distant relative from Texas embraced her, then turned away to wipe his eyes.

The Hrncirs are among hundreds of Texans of Czech descent coming to the Czech Republic, most for the first time.

Though some came before the Velvet Revolution, the end of communist rule has opened a floodgate of Czech Texans on a sort of ethnic pilgrimage. Whereas before 1989 there were only two orga-

nized tours that would come from Texas, this summer there were at least eight.

Many Czech Texans come in search of relatives, others simply to explore the land their ancestors left behind. Between 1850 and 1920 thousands of Czechs, mostly from the Moravian lands of Lachia and Wallachia, emigrated to Texas, and today many of their 500,000 to 750,000 descen dants are anxious to reestablish personal ties to "the old country."

"So many Janaks have already come by here, I couldn't even count them all," said Hanka Maralik of Ticha, Moravia. Mrs. Maralik had always known about distant family in America, though she hardly expected her relatives from Shiner, Texas, Rita and Leo Janak, to show up on her doorstep one day in 1979. "I was so surprised," said Mrs. Maralik, who at first was suspicious of these foreigners claiming to he her kin. Then Mrs. Janak took

Lodge 80, Holland to Host District Two Fall Meeting on September 18, 1994 Dear District Two Members, This is a reminder of the District Two Fall Meeting that will be held on Sunday, September 18, 1994 at Holland SPJST Lodge No. 80 in Holland, Texas.

The day will begin with registration starting at 1 p.m. The District Two Youth Club will meet at 1:30 p.m. and the adult business meeting will begin promptly at 2 p.m. The games will begin shortly following the business meeting and last until 4:30 p.m. The door prizes and announcement of contest and raffle winners will be at 4:30 p.m. The evening meal will be served at 5 p.m.

Like last year, 20 free tickets for games will be given to each person who registers by 2 p.m. Those who register after this time will not receive free tickets. Extra tickets will be available at the cost of 10 for $1.

A prize drawing will be conducted.

Tickets may he bought at the door at the cost of five for $1 along with the usual door prizes that you will he in on when you register. Like many Czech Texans, the Janaks speak Czech, a Czech that has changed little over the successive generations in Texas. "I love the way Leo talks," said Mrs. Mai-an. "Instead of saying, `Jak je dnes?' (`How is today?'), he says, `Toz, jak dneskay?'—just like people did a hundred years ago."

"There was just something exciting about coming over here, in a country that's just starting out," she said. Though her mother refused to teach her Czech at home, Ms. Reynolds enrolled in Czech language classes while at the University of Texas at Austin, and after several years of teaching in Texas that left her unsatisfied, she decided to come with her husband to the Czech Republic. "It was like coming home," she said. "A friend of mine in Texas asked me 'What do Czech people look like?' and I said 'Well, Barbara, they look like people in El Campo.'"

Other Czech Texans come to fulfill a particular aspect of their ethnic identity.

84, Dallas Invites Members and Friends to 23rd Czech Fest This Sunday, September 18 Lodge

Dear Members and Friends, Can you believe that this will be our 23rd year to have the Czech Fest benefit?

Our invitation goes to all of you reading this letter. We have room for several hundred to come and enjoy a full day of activities for all ages. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, September 18. A barbecue dinner will be served by Rudolph's Market Catering at 12:30 p.m.

The price will be $6 for adults and $3 for children ages 12 and under.

There will he various booths, including the Gift Booth, Country Store, Pastry Booth, Cake Walk and more. We are asking our members to support our lodge with donations, workers and just by coming. Pastry for our dinner will also be appreciated.

The free dance will he from 4 until 6 p.m. with music donated by the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra directed by Brother Sid Pokladnik.

Saturday night, September 17th, there will he a dance with music by Ray Dlabaj's Country Boys Band. Please come and start your weekend dancing. I promise to open the Gift Booth early for shopping if you wish.

At the Czech Fest on Sunday, we will give away many nice prizes, so come and see who the "Lucky 26 People" will be.

84, Dallas Reception Honors Sales Representatives Lodge

Dear Members, We had a nice get-together before our August meeting to honor our lodge sales representatives. The food was good and we had two visitors from the SPJST Supreme Lodge, Vice President Leonard Mikeska and Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas. They brought gifts for the lucky members whose numbers were called in a random drawing.

Each guest, along with District Three

Director Sid Pokladnik, gave a short talk, praising our sales representatives and delivering information about the SPJST. It was good to hear this information from those so close to the Home Office. We thank them for coming as well as for their gifts.

Several committees delivered reports during the meeting: In the Sunshine Committee report, get well cards went to Kimberly Frazier, Alisa Jarred, Cynthia Hagar, and Evelyn Trojacek. A sympathy card went to Lada Cerny, who lost his mother.

Richard Andreason reported on the bands and orchestras that will be playing at our lodge next year.

Youth Leader Bessie Petr thanked all who donated to the prize drawing for the Princess Ball on August 20. She also invited everyone to attend this special occasion.

In the House Committee report, Adolph Salac, who is always busy, reported on the electrical fixtures that had been repaired and on the dance floor clean up.

President Andreason reminded everyone to be ready for the Czech Fest on September 18. Saturday night, September 17th, there will be a dance with music by the Country Boys. On Sunday, doors open at 11:30 a.m.. A barbecue dinner will be served from 12:30 to 2 p.m. The afternoon will include game booths and fun for all, tollowed by the Czech Concert Orchestra playing your dancing enjoyment.

You have always enjoyed the day and given the lodge your support—so please join us again this year. Pastries are needed for the dinner dessert; members are asked to donate their favorites.

Donations are also being accepted for the cake walk. Groceries are needed for the country store as well as plants and gifts for the gift booth. Plan to he there.

92, Fort Worth Celebrates Annual Hat Dance

Dear Members and Friends, As I sat down to write about our annual hat dance that was held on August 27, it started to thunder. Along with the thunder came a few drops of rain. I hope that we get some rain. I know that there are others in this area who also need it.

Our dance was well attended as friends form Dallas, Arlington, Mineral Wells, Granbury, etc. attended. There were several types of hats. We all had something to look at. The winners in the youth hat contest were: First Place— Trenton Becan; Second Place—Stuart Chinworth; and Third Place—Jeremiah May. Winners in the Adult Ladies category were: First Place—Bee Adami; Second Place—Marcy Becan; and Third Place—Barbara Watkins. Winners in the Adult Men category were: First Place— Michael Becan; Second Place—LeRoy Bates; and Third Place—R.C. Luttrell.

The dance was enjoyed by all. The Sulaks from Ennis, Texas played.

Wednesday, September 14, 1994—VESTNIK/7 I want to thank everyone for all the prayers, cards and phone calls about our daughter, Carol Z. Everett. Carol has come a long way during her illness.

She came home very ill from Florida on August 21, 1993. After many visits to the doctor, two hospital stays and other treatments, she is just about well. At one time we were told that she may have to have both legs amputated, but, like I said, prayers and good care by doctors and nurses—and especially the Wound Care whirlpool therapy, really helped her back to health. She looks better and soon she will gain weight and hopefully be almost 100 percent. She is as yet with us here in Fort Worth.

It was sad to read in the Vestnik about Brian Vanicek's father passing away. We extend our sympathy and may his soul rest in peace . . . Congratulations to Brian, our editor, and Joan Vanicek on the arrival of a baby son. I hope mother is doing fine and that proud father does not pop the buttons off his shirt with chest expansion.

Driving through Texas, a New Yorker collided with a truck carrying a horse. A few months later, he tried to collect damages for his injuries: "How can you now claim to have all these injuries?" asked the insurance company's lawyer. "According to the police report, at the time you said you were not hurt."

"Look," replied the New Yorker "I was lying on the road in a lot of pain and I heard someone say the horse had a broken leg. The next thing I know, this Texas Ranger pulls out his gun and shoots the horse. Then he turns to me and asks, Are you okay?'"

Volna Cechie, 135, Ennis Membership Dinner September 25 Lodge

Dear Readers, Our lodge will be having its annual membership dinner on Sunday, September 25th at 12:30 p.m. at the

Sokol Activity Center in Ennis. The lodge will furnish ham, klobase, and potatoes. Members are asked to bring salads or desserts. Once again, we will be having a cake walk to benefit Meals on Wheels in Ennis. We would appreciate donations of cakes or pies for this fund raising event. Door prizes will be given and a raffle will also be held.

We were saddened by the recent death of member, Brother Joe Sladecek.

On July 16th, our lodge held a service at Myrtle Cemetery in Ennis in memory of Sister Mary I .a7novsky who had been our lodge secretary for many years. The speaker was Brother Stuart Hamilton.

He presented a tribute in honor of her life.

Four of our lodge members—Brother Larry Laznovsky, Sister Vlasta Laznovsky, Sister Libbie Vrla, and "yours truly" were proud participants in the Sokol Slet held in Prague, Czech Republic in early July. Besides participating in a very emotional parade of more than 20,000 through the streets of Prague, we performed the "Loyal Guard" calisthenics number at Strahov Stadium.

The stadium is the size of eight football fields. More than 3,500 took part in our number. We were among 250-plus Sokols who proudly represented the American Sokol Organization. There were 15 participants from the Southern District. These included our good Sokol and SPJST friends from Fort Worth and Dallas.

We also had an opportunity to visit in the home of relatives and to tour the country. The Slet in Prague was the first since 1948. It was an event that we had all hoped for, but many felt that it would not occur in our lifetime.

On October 8th, in reunion, Johnny Mensik and his Playboys, will play at the Sokol Activity Center, Ennis. The Sulak Brothers will also provide music. The dance will be from 8 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

Preceding the dance, Sokol gymnasts will have a special "California Here We Come" fund raiser to send a group of young adult gymnasts to Palm Springs, California to the USA Gymnaestrada.

The group has been working hard on a special number to be presented in California. Donations of $50 will include a roast beef dinner and dancing for two.

The ticket will also entitle the holder for a chance for first prize of $2,500, second prize of $250, and five $50 prizes.

Corpus Christi Circle of Women Report on September Meeting Twenty-four members and three guests met on Thursday, September 1 at Sokol Corpus Christi Sokol. Our guests were the granddaughter of Betty Jurica, Frances Carroll of Cincinnati and her husband, Greg, with their baby daughter, Olivia. This is the baby girl whose picture we admired at our last meeting.

Becky Elzner stood in for absent Vice President Lillian Covill, doing a fine job of handling the drawings for prizes and distributing them. She also volunteered to check into catering services available for our December meeting.

A get well card was passed around and signed for Anne Spencer who is in Spohn Hospital where she will be undergoing treatment.

Norma Baker distributed the new membership list, neatly enclosed in plastic covers to the ladies present. She also volunteered to mail a copy to our out-oftown members. Local members who were absent can pick up their copies at our next meeting. The ladies showed their appreciation for the fine job done by Norma with a round of applause.

President Kathy Marek reported that she and her mother, Betty Jurica, delivered our school supplies to the Department of Human Services where they were greatly appreciated.

Jerry Elzner donated some get well cards to be kept on hand for our signatures as needed. Hope we won't be using them anytime soon. He also taped eight hand-crafted flower pins from the Czech Republic under the tables for eight lucky ladies to find. Mine is a beautiful deep mauve rose. Thank you, Jerry.

Rose Huff told us of their trip to Vallejos, California to have a family portrait taken (five generations) and her side trip to Las Vegas. Marcellina Mokry enjoyed her trip to Galveston and seeing all the sights with her daughter. Leona Matula took in the sights at White Sands and Alamogordo, New Mexico with her son and his family. A lot of us who stayed home enjoyed the house warming at Ella Simcik's lovely new home the Saturday after our last meeting.

Happy Birthday was sung to Lil Hruska and we wish a happy birthday to Marsha Elzner McDougal in Tennessee and Sherrill Bure in Portland.

Prizes brought by nine members included five potted plants, homemade pickles, brownies, a frame set and a cutting board. Next meeting I'm buying more than one chance so I'll have better odds of winning.

Valley Czech Heritage Society to Meet Concho

The Runnels, Concho, and Tom Green Counties Czech Heritage Society of the Concho Valley will meet in Rowena at the SPJST Lodge Hall on Sunday, September 18 at 2:30 p.m.

President Louis Kokes will conduct the business meeting.

Vice President David Blazek, program chairman, has obtained a noted speaker from San Antonio, Texas.

Mr. Kostohryz-Taylor is a former teacher of Czech at the Defense Institute in Monterrey, California. He will speak about Northern Moravia and the many Czechs who immigrated to Texas from than area.

Mr. Kostohryz-Taylor lived in Moravia and came to the United States followed the invasion of the former Czechoslovakia by the Soviet Union President Kokes extends an invitation to all members and guests to come meet Mr. Kostohryz-Taylor and learn more about their heritage.

Everyone is asked to bring a covered dish for the potluck "svacina" which will follow the meeting.

Old Business Our Christmas party will be catered by Bessie Petr and the menu will feature stuffed chicken breasts, seasoned rice, green beans almandine, cranberry congealed salad, fruit salad, rolls, coffee, tea and mandarin orange cake. The price is $5.75 each.

We will meet upstairs and everyone can bring as many guests as they would like. Everyone should turn in the money for themselves and their guests for the dinner at the November meeting. We have changed the time for this party to 10 a.m. There will be no meeting—only a social.

Esther Cunningham says we are going to have a group picture of the Krouzek at the Christmas Party. We hope all of you will make an effort to make this party so you will be in the picture.

The decorating committee consists of Ida Fehner, Evelyn Cechan, Jo Cechan, Faye Wright and Bertha Podhrasky.

They will set up the tables on Wednesday, November 30, 1994.

Our 60th Anniversary was discussed and a committee was appointed and will make plans to bring back for the members to discuss and vote on. The committee consisted of Esther Cunningham, Jo Cechan, Faye Wright, Evelyn Trojacek, Bessie Petr, Evelyn Cechan, Alice Roberts, and Helen Oates.

Cabla Family Reunion

The 17th annual Svoboda - Cabla reunion will be held on Saturday, October 8, 1994, at the Seaton Community Center, beginning at 10 a.m. The meal will be served around noon Each family is asked to bring a vegetable and dessert.

Barbecue beef, sausage and fried chicken are being provided as well as cups, plates, utensils, and drinks. To cover costs, adults will be $2 each and children, under the age of 12, will be 75 cents.

Adults and children may play bingo or dominoes after the meal. Bingo players, please bring a wrapped unique white elephant gift for someone else's winning treasurer! Youth Letters District Two Fall Meeting This Sunday in Holland Dear Readers, Just a reminder of the District Two Fall Meeting which will be held on Sunday, September 18 in Holland at SPJST Lodge No. 80. Youth members, please make a note, we will be having a short youth meeting at 1:30 p.m. Up for discussion is a district lock-in. Please make plans to attend.

The meeting will include the Christmas ornament contest. It's always neat to see all of your great ideas.

We will also be having a silent auction with the donations going toward youth activities. We are asking for items of $10 value or more. Your items will be deeply appreciated.

There will be many games, prizes and food for everyone. I want to thank Lodge No. 48, Beyersville, for a new game which they have so generously offered to share with us. It promises to be a lot of fun.

We look forward to seeing all of you in Holland on Sunday. Youth members, come early, register your ornament and be on time for our 1:30 meeting.

Three Summer Report District

Dear Readers, It started out on June 3, 4, and 5, when my two assistants, Gladys Yates and Lynda Novak, and Jerry Zabojnik took four youths to a L.I.T. training session at Camp Lone Star in La Grange, Texas.

Gladys served as a nurse for all of the districts. They came home raving about the new friends they now have and what they learned in those three days. I stayed at home recuperating from a double knee surgery.

On June 26th, District Three YAD was held in Ennis at Lodge No. 25. We had approximately 220 entries. It was well attended and many varied talents performed.

From July 15th through 18th, District Three went to Camp Val Verde. This was one of our biggest camps. Thanks to you children for working towards your goal of going to camp. It's a pleasure to work with all of you.

We had wonderful chaperones who took care of our children who were away from home—and away from Mom and Dad. I want to thank all of the chaperones who took time out of their busy schedule to come to camp. Without you, we would not have had a successful camp.

My assistant, Gladys Yates, did a great job for us as a nurse. She treated all of the children with kindness. They forgot about their pain and were soon on their way. I also want to thank our donors who donated all of the goodies for our camp. To Lodge No. 66, I want to say thanks to all of the members who made donations or who obtained donations from their places of employment.

Lodge No. 6, Lodge No. 92, and Lodge No. 84, you all helped us tremendously.

We appreciated all of the donations.

Brother Sid and Sister Justine, thank you for the monetary contribution. We also thank Louise and Richard Burney for the hay ride. That is one of the highlights of camp.

Everyone enjoyed the hamburgers at the river. John Engelke cooked the burgers with the help of George Pauling, James Yates, and Diane Engelke who served the cold drinks. Thanks, guys!

John, we appreciate you for all of your help checking on the children and teens and staying up late at night to be sure that everyone was safe and in bed.

We thank Jerry Zabojnik for the Sunday morning service, and of course, we thank him for the snow cones that he provides every year. Thanks to our staff, the life guards, and the horse counselors—you all did a great job for us.

The craft counselors were Barbara Wolfe, Diane Engelke and Annie Sanders. They do a great job with the children and their crafts. Archery instruction was by Emil Petr and Jerry May. I had good comments about you guys—but they want to move on top of the hill next year.

We added something new this year— the challenge course. Everyone enjoyed it! We will probably extend this program next year. Here, we thank Brother Sid who volunteered to go and watch the children and be there as their leader because they were away from their groups. Lyn Smith, one of our leaders, was also there but she participated in the program and did a good job. Thanks to our LITs. You did a job job for us as Leaders in Training. We appreciated you.

We had guests and visitors. President Howard Leshikar came to spend some time and we helped him to celebrate his birthday. Thanks, Howard, for coming.

Wanda Petr, who has served many, many years as a District Three nurse, came to pay us a visit. We were glad to see you, Wanda. You are doing so good!

I want to thank Lynda Novak, my other assistant, who did all the errand running or me. Also, thanks for all the pictures that she took and are included with this letter.

Last, but not lest, thank you to Joni Lange, for all of your support and help.

Youth Ornament Contest Guidelines Four Youth Achievement Day Report District

Dear Readers, District Four Youth Achievement Day was held July 16 at the Lodge 49 SPJST hall in Rowena. Although the participation was down from previous years, I felt it was a big success. My thanks to Nancy Schwertner, Lodge 49 Youth Leader, for hosting this event for us. You, along with Betty Schwartz, and Debbie Halfmann did an excellent job in helping me set up, clean up and serve some delicious refreshments. I would also like to thank Melanie Block, Mollie Dierschke, and Janis Dierschke for all of their help.

Leonard Jansa did a great job of being the emcee for the Royalty and Talent portions of YAD. I appreciate Leonard and

Must be present to win.

The four (4) winning ornaments from each district will be sent to the Home Office where they will be placed on the SPJST Youth Christmas Tree in the Museum.

Winners at the state level will be recognized with a certificate and have their ornament on the State Youth Christmas Tree. A picture of the Christmas tree will be on the front page of the Vestnik with the names of the winners.

Lodge 13, Dime Box Youth Club Reports on August Meeting Dear Readers, The August 21, 1994 meeting of the Lodge No. 13 Youth Club was called to order by Lamanda Kostelka. Tony Ford led the Pledge of Allegiance and LaDonna Jatzlau called the roll. Delia Wiederhold gave the treasury report.

Our youth leader congratulated and thanked all of the participants who entered in the District YAD and the State YAD. They all did a great job.

Remember, our next meeting will be on September 18 at 1 p.m. and will be held at Birch Creek park. To enter the park, there is a $3 fee per car. Parents need to come in order for their children to swim.

Each parent is asked to volunteer for a month to think of some new ideas on how the children can earn more points for the Vestnik.

We all welcome our new member, Jay Roberts. He is eleven and is in the sixth grade at Dime Box School. He likes to play baseball, basketball and also loves to play and help take care of his two-year old sister, Shiloh. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Perry.

After the meeting, we all enjoyed ice cream, puzzles, and games. The next meeting is October 6 at 7 p.m. in the Commercial State Bank Gold Room.

Dear Members and Readers, The District Five Youth Achievement Day was held on Sunday, July 10, at Lodge Lodge 88 in Houston. There was a large amount of participation from the youth in our district. The youth were from lodges 88, 139, 142, 172 and 196.

88, Houston Youth Club Reports on August Meeting Lodge

Dear Youth Club Members and Readers, President Justin Miller called the meeting to order at 6:49 p.m. Our meeting was held on Tuesday, August 16, instead of Wednesday, because of a prior booking at the hall. We had 18 young people an eight adults present.

Secretary Laura Farquhar rad a very nice note form S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 2 in Needville. They thanked us for our generous donation to their Piano Fun. The Sunshine Committee reported that they would like to update the addresses and birthdays of the youth club members and would also like the birthdays of our parents.

The District Five Fall Family Day will be Sunday, September 18 in Crosby, Texas. This is also the day of the Christmas Ornament Contest. Mrs. Linney reminded everyone that they must be present to win in the contest.

Registration will be from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 pm. The Crosby SPJST will provide the judges. A roast beef dinner with

all the trimmings contributed by SPJST members will be served at 12:30 p.m. A short meeting will be held at 11 a.m., prior to the dinner.

With the absence of Assistant Youth Leader Zalesky, Mrs. Bender reminded the youth of the upcoming craft meetings on Saturday, September 3 and Saturday, September 10. We will be making fall wreaths to sell at the Fall District Meeting and on Czech Day, on October 30.

Assistant Youth Leader Bender thanked everyone and congratulated all of the winners and participants and spectators from our youth club who attended the State YAD in Temple on August 6 and 7. We discussed our upcoming short program on Czech Day and she mentioned that soon we will he starting our Christmas program rehearsals.

The youth voted to have a homemade ice cream booth at the Czech Day celebration.

We also voted to have a "Back to School Pool Party" on Friday, August 19.

Several of our members are already in school but they will join us after class.

The swimming will he from 3 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Afterwards, hamburgers will be served. If it rains, we will move the party indoors.

Youth Leader Linney thanked the LITs for a job well done at camp. She said as a thank you, she will buy the Lodge 88 LITs who attend the next Texas Brew dance, their dance ticket. This will be on Friday, September 9.

DYC Marie Stayton spoke about the great camp we had this year. She said that the date for next year's camp has already been set. We will again attend the HEB Foundation Camp in Leakey, Texas. Camp will be from Sunday, July 2 until Thurday, July 6, 1995. We will travel to camp on two buses. More details to come early next year.

The youth club officers will have a meeting on Wednesday, August 30, at 7 p.m.

Our next monthly meeting will be on September 21, at 6:30 p.m. Justin Miller will provide the refreshments for the meeting.
