Expect the Unexpected If you've ever farmed or raised a garden, then you know all about "timing."

You can have a great-looking crop.

Things never looked better—then, all of a sudden, you catch a sudden hail storm or experience a long dry spell. Things have a way of changing. We can control many of the variables, but Mother Nature is still in charge when it comes to the timing of natural occurrences.

Czech Class Allocations Czech class allocations are still available. Any SPJST lodge wishing to hold Czech classes for a minimum of 15 hours with a minimum of at least five students may apply. The amount per lodge is $200. Students should also pay a fee for these classes. Each local lodge is to handle their own class and to report to the Supreme Lodge on how the money was spent and the number of students who were enrolled.

No credits will be given for completion of the courses. The classes should, however, provide those interested with a good opportunity to develop a better understanding of the Czech language— both as it is written and as it is spoken.

SPJST's Rising Stars Shine Congratulations to all of our young members who participated in the State Royalty Contest held Saturday, August 6 at Lodge 24, Cyclone and in the State Youth Achievement Day Contest held Sunday, August 7 at the Mayborn Convention Center in Temple. Likewise, thanks to the wonderful crowd of SPJST members, officials and friends of the Society who came out to show their support. A complete summary of both days of activity, including photographs of winning entrants, will appear in the August 24th issue of the Vestnik. Please note that there will he no Vestnik published on August 17th. Thank you for your attention.

While on That Subject From Sister Vlasta Vitek, reporter for the Travis/Williamson County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas, comes the following announcement: Austin area residents may be interested in knowing that Austin Community College will once again be offering a class in Conversational Czech. The course, which is listed as CSC 1-322-040, will open on September 6 and continue through October 20, 1994. The class will meet on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Reagan Campus Room 443.

Anyone interested in learning Czech is invited to attend. No prior knowledge of the Czech language is required.

Emphasis will be on vocabulary and pronunciation. For more information, call the ACC Continuing Education Department at (512) 483-7630.

Likewise, Houston-area residents are reminded that Czech classes are again being offered through Alief Evening School by Brother John J. Karas (see page 14) and at Lodge 88 by Brother Bill Souchek. The classes at the Alief school commence on Wednesday, August 24.

Helen Hegwood, FIC State Field Representative Insurance Department 8 Years of Service

In her position as State Field Representative for District Five, Sister Ilegwood provides instruction and motivational support to our volunteer sales force.

Over the years, Sister Hegwood has worked in various capacities with the SPJST Insurance Department and became a full-time SPJST employee in 1993. As part of her job, Sister Hegwood presents continuing education workshops and provides oneon-one assistance to sales representatives.

Sister Hegwood, who holds the licensed title of Fraternal. Insurance Counselor, has attended various business management classes and is a graduate of Incarnate Word Academy. She also attended Massey's Business College, the University of Houston and received two years of nurse-oriented training at St. Joseph's Hospital in Houston.

Sister Hegwood has been an active member of Lodge 88, Houston for nearly 50 years. During this time she has served in a variety of capacities, ranging from assistant youth leader and president of the Dramatic Club to president of the Choral Club and a performer with the Lodge 88 Beseda Group. She has also served as secretary for the SPJST Insurance Committee at the state SPJST conventions.

Sister Hegwood is happy, knowing that her participation has helped to promote her local lodge, Czech culture and the SPJST—all this in addition to helping provide the benefits of SPJST insurance to many members.

Before working for SPJST, Sister Hegwood held sales positions with J.C. Penney and S.H. Kress. She also worked in administrative support positions for Anderson, Clayton and Company and for Henke and Pilot.

One of Helen's widely acclaimed special interests is her singing. Over the years, she has performed with several choirs in the Houston area and has performed at numerous public and private functions, including two performances at the Houston Astrodome. For the past 17 years she has performed for the opening of the Rosenberg Czech Fest. She was honored in 1994 by the festival for her contributions. In addition to her singing, Helen's other hobbies include bowling, ice skating, roller skating and volleyball.

Asked to identify her most memorable occasion working for SPJST, Helen says there have just been "too many to put on paper."

"Maybe I could write a book about all of the wonderful people, activities and youth programs I've been associated with through the SPJST," she says.

Applications Now Being Accepted for Position of Communications Assistant The SPJST Home Office is now accepting applications for the job of Communications Assistant. The individual selected will (1) assist in the development of external communications projects; and (2) provide technical and creative support of the weekly society newspaper.

Requirements: Bachelor's degree in communications related field or five years related work experience. Successful appli-

cant will possess excellent writing skills and have a knowledge of desk-top publishing methods. Ability to travel statewide and work some weekends and holidays required. Applicants may submit a resume, accompanied by writing samples and/or samples of past work and salary requirements, to SPJST President's Office on or before the close of business, August 12, 1994.

Hosts Annual Family Day This Sunday, August 14 Dear Members, A reminder that our lodge will hold its annual Family Day on Sunday, August 14th at the American Legion Hall in Hallettsville. A social hour will begin at 11 a.m., followed by a noon meal of barbecue brisket, sausage and trimmings.

Ladies of the lodge are asked to bring desserts. There will be a small charge for the meal.

Following the meal, a short meeting will be held. Our 50-year members will be recognized and presented with their pins. The youth will perform their talent from Y.A.D. and display their crafts.

The youth club will have a cake walk and games for everyone. Door prizes will be given.

Members and their families or guests are cordially invited to attend.

6, Cottonwood Says "Thank You to All for Making 97th Annual Picnic A Success

Dear Readers, On behalf of all the officers, I want to give our special thanks to all of those who were involved in making our 97th Annual Picnic a great success. It was one

of the best that we have ever held. We want to thank those helped make preparations during the two days prior to the picnic and those who took time out at least two weeks prior to the picnic to seek items for a great auction.

The advertising was great and many came because of it. Thank you, for a great job. Thanks, too, to those who came out at 3:30 a.m., Sunday to start frying the chicken and stayed until 1 p.m. to finish the job. We thank you all for a hard day.

To those in the serving lines, sweets section, and tea section—you came out to help and you did a great job of serving the long lines of people wanting to eat.

We also thank the meal ticket sellers, the raffle committee, the auctioneers and helpers. A lot of people helped behind the bar as well as with the cake walk and games. This was good because some of our youth were at camp that Sunday.

To all those who donated auction prizes or made kitchen donations, we all appreciate your efforts. Most of all, we want to thank all of the individuals who came out to eat and support our lodge. It was great. Thank you.

47, Seaton Bar-B-Q Cook-Off and Festivities Attract Good Crowd

Dear Readers, In spite of the 100 degree temperatures, our recent Barbecue Cook-Off attracted a good crowd of participants and onlookers. The shade trees and quarter-inch shower late Friday provided some relief from the heat. A total of 24 barbecue cookers, some from as far away as Seguin and Crockett, participated in the cook-off.

A karaoke bar night was held on Friday night for the cookers and the community. Approximately 250 people enjoyed the event and live entertainment.

The overall winners of the cook-off are as follows:

Shiner Lodge No. 10 met on Monday, July 18th at 7 p.m. at the home of Robert and Gladys Veit. All officers were present.

The meeting opened with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the reading of the minutes by Secretary Juanita Valenta. she also gave the treasury report.

All lodge business was discussed and taken care of.

After the meeting, soft drinks and visitation was enjoyed by all.

District Two Director Willie Kohutek informed the membership that Mr. Keith Gatewood would be the new state field representative for District One and District Two. July birthday celebrants were Willie Kohutek, Vallie Zavodny, Della Maresh, and Jerome Orsag. Anniversaries were celebrated by Ruth and Lee Hanusch, Rickie and Janelle Novosad and Harry and Linda Gersbach.

Door prizes, which were Seaton Star Hall mugs with dance passes, were won

by Vlasta Hruska, Wallace Jez, Dorothy Pechal and Willie Kohutek. Mrs. Hruska graciously donated hers to Mr. Gatewood.

As of this letter, we will have had our August meeting. So, I will remind everyone that we voted to have our September meeting on the second Sunday in September. This will be on September 11. The meeting will start at 2 p.m.

47, Seaton Reports on July Meeting

Lodge

The July meeting of Lodge 47, Seaton was held on Tuesday night, July 5. It was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by President Frank Klinkovsky. There were 52 members and two visitors present.

This meeting was in honor of our sales representatives at Seaton Star Hall.

We have 13 sales representatives who work very hard for our lodge.

After going through the regular business meeting, President Frank Klinkovsky introduced Mr. Keith Gatewood. He thanked Frank for inviting him to this meeting to help recognize the sales representatives. In his speech, he encouraged all the membership to be helpful to the sales representatives by giving them names of people they might know would be interested in SPJST insurance.

47, Seaton Czech Class Off to A Flying Start

Lodge 54, West Honors Sales Representative Freddie Kaluza Approximately 100 members and guest attended an appreciation social for Freddie Kaluza on. July 8, 1994 at Lone Star Hall in West. Among the Supreme Lodge representation were Vice President Leonard Mikeska, State Field Manger Gene McBride and District Three Sales Representative Keith Gatewood; others included Rev. Melvin Dornak, Mayor William "Boiley" Pareya, Miss Westfest Rachel Podsednik, plus the many new members who Freddie secured for Lodge 54.

After Lodge President John Emery introduced the head table, Rev. Melvin Dornak was asked to say the blessing.

Everyone present was then treated to pizza and beverages. Brief remarks were then made by Brother Leonard Mikeska, congratulating and complimenting Freddie Kaluza on his life insurance productivity. He then presented him with a gift. Gene McBride and Keith Gatewood also expressed their congratulations and enlightened and encouraged the attendees of the importance of a lodge securing new members. Freddie then

thanked everyone for their efforts and confidence. He also stressed the importance of SPJST and the input that it has had on his life.

For entertainment, Fraternal Activity Coordinator Maxine Sefcik presented a story, "This is Your Life, Freddie Kaluza," which follows this paragraph.

Afterwards, several youngsters formed a circle with Freddie in the center and sang "The More We Get Together."

Freddie Kaluza This Is Your Life Freddie Kaluza was born on November 20, 1951 at Providence Hospital in Waco to Alfred and Aline (Marek) Kaluza. He weighed 5-pounds and 8-ounces at firth and was the third child born to the family. He grew up and lived on the farm with his four brothers and sisters, namely, Dorothy Tichaysky, James Kaluza, Ronnie Kaluza, Mary Jane Urbanovsky, Danny Kaluza, Arlene Hoelscher and Tommy Kaluza. As a child, Freddie enjoyed going to the SPJST Lodge 54 Youth Club meetings.

This was during the 1960s when Estelle Marek was served as the first youth club leader. Living on the farm, the youth club meetings were one of Freddie's only opportunities to come to town.

He attended St. Mary's School in West and graduated in 1966. He also attended West High School where he graduated in

The first Czech class of the new session was held at Star Hall last Wednesday night with a very good response. A total of 32 students are registered. The next class will be on August 10 at 7 p.m. There is still time for you to join us if you are interested—but you should plan to be at our class tonight, August 10.

Later, Freddie enrolled at Hill Junior College. He graduated in 1972 with a two-year Associates Degree.

Freddie married his high school sweetheart, Janice Matus, on November 22, 1973 at St. Mary's Church of the Assumption in West. They have five sons, Shawn, Justin, Brandon, Jacob and Nathan. Freddie and Janice's first date was at the SPJST Lodge 54 Hall in West.

Freddie pursued his education and fulfilled his dream with a Postal Administration degree., He was welcomed into the postal service in November 1974 as a part-time employee.

He became a supervisor in 1978 and in 1983, he was promoted to postmaster here in West.

Along with his other activities, Freddie dedicates his time as a volunteer for the West Ambulance Service. He is currently vice president and a board member of the West Ambulance Service. He has been a member and an officer of the Ambulance Association for 14 years. For four years, he served as a board member of the West Community Hospital.

Freddie has also been a regular blood donor over the past 20 years and is work-

ing on his tenth gallon.

He is a member of St. Mary's Church of the Assumption in West where he currently gives his time to the church as a Eucharistic Minister, usher and a vocation contact person for the parish. He is also a member of the West Chamber of Commerce and has served as member and as an officer of the National Association of Postmasters. On July 28, Freddie and Janice were selected "1994 Citizens of West" by the West Chamber of Commerce.

Freddie joined SPJST Lodge No. 54 on December 31, 1967. He became more active in 1988 and was elected lodge treasurer and was appointed sales representative for Lodge No. 54. Through his dedication and hard work, he was selected as the first Lodge No. 54 "Fraternalist of the Year" in 1991. He also served as a delegate to the 26th SPJST Convention in 1992. During his eight years as an outstanding sales representative for Lodge No. 54, Freddie has secured 140 certificates for life insurance and annuities.

Freddie somehow manages to stay in close contact with his family and when able, relaxes on the farm raising cattle with his sons' help.

125, Westhoff Honors 76-Year Member on 96th Birthday Lodge

Mrs. Louise Baros was honored on her 96th birthday by Lodge 125, Westhoff on Sunday, July 10, 1994.

District Six Director Matt Vanek of Victoria, Texas presented Mrs. Baros with her paid-up SPJST insurance certificate. She opted to continue with her certificate and its priviliges. Brother Vanek also presented Sister Baros with gifts of dominoes and jewelery.

The party was held at the American Legion Hall in Westhoff. The catered dinner was served at noon and followed by a tribute to Mrs. Baros on her long and useful life. The tribute, which was delivered by Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Edwin Baros.

Sister Louise was born in Shiner, Texas on July 10, 1898. Her maiden name was Lukas and her husband was the late William Baros. They made their home in the Westhoff area in 1907.

Sister Baros now lives in town where she continues to enjoy vegetable and flower gardening, playing dominoes and attending church at St. John Lutheran Chruch where she is a member. She is also a member of the Mueller-Schaffner American Legion Sister Louis Baros receives Age 96 Certificate and congratulations from District Six Director Matt Vanek. The presentation was made at a party honoring Sister Baros on Sunday, July 10 at the American Legion Hall in Westhoff.

Post 369 Auxilliary and participates in community projects.

Sister Baros joined the SPJST local lodge in May 1917 and has been an active member ever since. She was presented her 75-year membership pin in 1993.

Other special guests at her party were her daughter, Angelene Hilbrich and husband, Melvin; grandson, Kent Hilbrich and wife, Cindy; and children, Justin, Brandon and Kinci; grandson Gregg Bunjes and wife, Sheryl; granddaughter, Sue Hilbrich and husband, Billy Ray; and great-granddaughter Terri (Hilbrich) Boothe and husband, Kenneth. Other relatives and members of Lodge 125 were also in attendance.

Sister Baros is the second member of Lodge 125 to achieve the age of 96.

Her brother, Edward J. Lukas, was honored on April 1, 1990. Mr. Lukas passed away on May 2, 1994 at age 100.

84, Dallas Youth Club Invites Everyone to the Annual Princess Ball . and the new Miss America for Lodge

1994 - 1995 is .. .

So, maybe it's not the Miss America Pageant—but it is Lodge No. 84's annual Princess Ball. On August 20th we will crown our queen and king for 1994-1995.

Music will be by Fritz Hodde and—of course—the kitchen will be open with great foods and drinks.

at Austin Aqua Fest Kolaches

The members of the Austin Czech Historical Association will sponsor a food booth at Austin Aqua Fest's Czech German Night on Friday, August 12, 1994. Kolaches filled with fruit, poppy seed and sausage will be available along with strudels and lemonade.

Czech-German Night, one of the Fest's nine ethnic nights, will feature entertainment by the Vrazel's Polka Band of Buckholts, Bobby Jones Czech Band of Wharton, Texas Czech Folk Singers of Dallas, and the Czech Folk Dancers of West. German entertainment includes the Bavarian Village Band, the Wallburg Boys, and Dutch Treat. The Night Lighted Water parade and the Fireworks Concert in the Sky will be added attractions at the fest night.

Lodge 88, Houston Birthday Club Reports on Club Activities I received a letter from Wanda Elzner telling me about the Autumn Hills Home.

Our resident of the month is Anna Elzner. Anna was born in Austria! She moved to Texas when she was an infant.

Anna lived in two different towns before moving to Houston in 1929. She married Joe Elzner and had one son. She enjoys playing dominoes and has live here for one-and-a-half years.

Anna is a gracious lady. Wanda, her daughter-in-law, will agree. Della Miksch, Ellen Miculka and Pearl Hanka visited her some time ago. I had a lovely time. Anna keeps in touch with many of the Birthday Club sisters; since she's been a member for a long time and she is on the resident council.

We miss many of our dear sisters and appreciate hearing from them.

97, Placedo Reports on Quarterly Meeting Lodge

It was a very busy and productive second quarterly meeting on July 15 for Lodge 97, Placedo. The meeting was called to order by President Dorothy Elsik and then it was dig in and cover a lot of ground. There were the minutes by Dennis Vanek, read and approved, and, of course, we covered old business. Then it was on to the business of planning our first real big Christmas party (something special for us all). Then, our FAC, Dorothy Fasel, discussed the Czech language course for our youth. Lodge 97 is going to give a flag to our youth lodge.

The lodge is also donating to the piano fund at S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 2 in Needville.

Diane Dum, our youth leader, gave her report on the youth activities and Nicole Dum, youth secretary, gave her report.

Several of our youth read Flag Day readings entitled "Reverence to the Flag," "Our Flag," and two entitled "I am Your Flag."

Lodge 97, Placedo is pleased to announce that we are hosting the SPJST The Austin Czech Historical Association (aka Austin Czech Club) was organized in 1975 by well-known Austinite Willie Kocurek, as part of the American Bicentennial celebration. Over the years, the organization has participated in various activities, including folklife festivals, promoting the Texas Czech cultural and social life. The association recently awarded a scholarship to Ms. Leigh Hall from the University of Texas at Austin to assist her in her Czech Studies at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic.

The club is open to anyone interested in Czech culture and history. For more information about the organization, contact President Pavia Adamik Van Bibber at (512) 255-6994.

Rozkvet, No. 172, Pasadena Reports on July Meeting Lodge

The meeting for July was held on Wednesday, the 27th, starting at 7:30 p.m. The Second Vice President opened the meetin g with a welcome in Czech

and English. The Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence was held in memory of our deceased members.

The meeting was then turned over to First Vice President Robert Mayfield due to the absence of President Alvin Sefcik.

Correspondence was read, including a "thank you" from the Rose Foundation for the assistance of Lodge 172 for their benefit which raised more than $14,000.

Jo Mayfield, secretary, read the minutes of our monthly and executive meetings which were approved. All reports from officers and committees were heard and accepted. Chairman of Trustees Joe Krenek advised that we will soon be receiving bids to seal our parking lot and driveways.

We lost a member, Sam Malfa, this past week. Sam, at one time, attended our dances regularly and he was a very good dancer. May he rest in peace.

Elsie Wolf is recovering from minor surgery. Roger Krenek has also recovered from an appendectomy and is back at work.

We did not have a report on our youth club as they have been enjoying their camp outing.

Door prizes were won by Joe Krenek, Tommy Wallace, Louise Willis and Johnny Mikeska.

The Work Party Day was Monday, August 1st, with only seven members to assist. Still, those seven members did plumbing, painting and cleaning of the air conditioner grills as well as repairing light fixtures.

Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, August 24th at 7:30 p.m.

In Memoriam Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 154, Fort Worth, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the family of our departed lodge sister, FRANKIE HOGGARD, who passed away on Monday, May 30 of an apparent heart attack in a nursing home.

She was born on May 9, 1918 in Menard, Texas and was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Brother Joe N. Hoggard.

She was a member of Lodge No. 154 since 1964.

Survivors include a brother, George Hitchfield of Graham; a sister, Leta Palmer of Fort Worth; three grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Graveside services were held on the following Wednesday at Mount Olivet Cemetery. Reverend Jack Bankhead officiated.

Shannon North Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

May our departed sister rest in eternal peace.

of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 154, Fort Worth, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge sister, MARJORIE CLINE, who passed away on Wednesday, June 22 at her home at the age of 71 years in North Richland Hills.

She was born on October 14, 1922 in Fort Worth.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and SPJST Lodge No. 154 since 1962.

She retired in 1984 as a secretary for the legal firm of Cline and Cline.

She is survived by her mother, Gertrude Cline, of North Richland Hills.

Graveside services were held on Friday, June 24 at 10 a.m. at Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Reverend Floyd G. Kinser officiated.

Mount Olivet Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

The family suggests memorials be made to Saint Joseph's Hospice.

Memory of Mary Annie Ermis

Resolution

Mary Annie Ermis, age 67, passed away on Sunday, June 26, 1994 at her home in Jourdanton. Mrs. Ermis was born in Flatonia, Texas, but had lived in Atascosa County for more than 50 years, making her home in Jourdanton. She was a member of Saint Matthew's Catholic Church . and the K.J.Z.T. She was also a very active member of the Jourdanton V.F.W. Auxiliary. Mrs. Ermis' family is a 100 Percent SPJST Family. Mary was a loyal SPJST member of Lodge No. 1161, La Parita Jourdanton. She has always done and spoke in the best interest of our lodge.

We will all miss her and remember her.

She will never be forgotten.

Mrs. Ermis is survived by her husband, Lydmil Leo Ermis, of Jourdanton; two sons, Lee Roy Ermis of Jourdanton, and Leonard Ermis and daughter-in-law, Susan Ermis of Bergheim, Texas; two sisters, Helen Carrig of Texas City, Texas and Lillie Burda of Austin, Texas; and one brother, John Kace of San Antonio.

Also surviving are seven grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

Vigil Services were held Monday, June 27, 1994 at 7 p.m. in the Chapel of the Tri-City Funeral Home in Jourdanton.

Mass of Christian Burial was said Tuesday, June 28, 1994 at 10 a.m. at the Saint Matthew's Catholic Church in Jourdanton with the Rev. Michael Yarbrough officiating. Interment followed in the Saint Matthew Catholic Cemetery under the director of the TriCity Funeral Home of Jourdanton, Thomas A. Lange, funeral director.

Mary was a good wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She will be missed but never forgotten. May she rest in peace and God bless her and her family.

Rosary was recited on Saturday, June 25th at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Sunday, June 26th at the church with Rev. Jerry Ryan as celebrant. Burial took place at Fatima Cemetery in Abbott.

Sister Georgia was employed by Lurch Manufacturing Company in West for 20 years and worked at the Village Bakery for the past three years. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court No. 829; KJZT member in Abbott and a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Abbott. She was an SPJST member since January 1949. Sister Georgia was a very willing and productive member of the lodge.

Survivors include her husband, Frank Kofnovec of Abbott; one son, David Kofnovec of Abbott; one daughter, Cindy Reich of Abbott; one brother , Willie Helona of Abbott; two sisters, Mary Mach and Helen Kubacak of West; and six grandchildren.

of. Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 92 in Fort Worth, Texas, wish to express heartfelt sympathy on behalf of our entire membership, to the family of EISA J. DAVENPORT, a homemaker, who died on Thursday, July 14, 1994 at her home at the age of 76.

Sister Davenport was born in Montgomery County and had lived in the Fort Worth area since 1947. She was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church in Haltom City. She was also a member of SPJST Lodge No. 92.

She is survived by her husband, Emory Lee Davenport of Haltom City, a daughter, Priscilla Ann Lockman of Avery, and a brother, Elton Eledge of Huntsville, Arkansas.

The funeral was held at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 18, 1994 at Mount Olivet Funeral Home. Burial was held in the Mount Olivet cemetery. May our departed sister rest in eternal peace.

of Sympathy The officers and members of SPJST Lodge 30, Taiton, wish to express our sympathy to the family of our departed brother, WILLIAM JENNINGS DUCKETT, who passed away on Tuesday, July 12, 1994 at the age of 99.

Mr. Duckett was born on October 28, 1894 and as a child traveled to this area on the orphan train. He had the experiences of working on the railroad, in a saddle shop and a cotton gin before he retired from cotton farming. Mr. Duckett was a member of Masonic Lodge 817 of East Bernard, the Trinity Lutheran Church and a 78-year member of Lodge 30, Taiton.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Woytek Duckett, former Lodge 30 vice president for more than 20 years; daughters, Virginia Belt of Flatonia, Abie Brownshadel of Nederaland and Willie Mae Tenison of Dallas; a son, L.L. Duckett of Austin; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife and one of his children, Anna Hruska Duckett; a son J.J. Duckett; and one great-grandchild.

Services were held at 3 p.m., Friday, July 15, 1994 at the Triska Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John Wilimann of of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating.

Burial followed in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in El Campo.

of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere and deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother, FRED J. MALINA, age 77, who passed away late Sunday, July 17, 1994 at West Community Hospital. Mr. Malina was born September 17, 1916 in Bomartin, the son of Frank and Mary Malina. He married Esther Ann Krizan on February 20, 1950 in Temple. They then moved to Nelson, California and lived there until returning to West in 1986. He was a farmer most of his life. Brother Malina enjoyed gardening and raising geese. He will best be remembered for sharing his vegetables with his family and friends. He was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood.

He is survived by his wife, Esther Malina; one son, John Franklin Malina of Nelson, California; two grandchildren, Michael Malina and Lisa Malina of Nelson, California; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 20, 1994 at West Brethren Cemetery with Rev. Robert Holaday officiating.

of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 94, Dennice, of Wheelock, Texas, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest and sincere sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother, EMIL JOHN NEDBALEK, who died on July 23, 1994, at the age of 82. Funeral services were held on July 26th at 10 a.m. at the Shiloh Baptist Church.

The Revs. Keith Petteway of Shiloh Baptist Church, C.E. Barnett of South Side Baptist Church, Elton Alford of Bethany Church and Dale Wells of Wheelock Baptist Church officiated.

Burial was in the Wheelock Cemetery under the direction of Blair-StubbsMcCauley Funeral Home.

Brother Nedbalek died in Bryan. He was born in Robertson County to John and Francis Wymola Nedbalek. He attended Wheelock and Shiloh schools and was a lifelong resident of Robertson County.

Brother Nedbalek married Artie Mae Pruett on August 1, 1931. He was a farmer and a member of the Shiloh Baptist Church.

Ocker Brethren Church to Host Quilt Show on August 13 The Christian Sisters of Ocker Brethren Church at Zabcikville will sponsor a Country Quilt Show and Bazaar on Saturday, August 13, from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. It will be in the church fellowship building. The church is located on Highway 53, approximately 11 miles east of Temple.

An admission fee of $2 will be charged. Children under 12 will be admitted free. In addition to viewing the quilts, refreshments will be served and quilt booklets will be furnished to identify the various quilts.

Quilt patterns will be available at a minimum charge. The following classifications will be shown: Antique Historical (before 1933); Patchwork; Applique; Friendship; Embroidery; Tie tac; Machine-made; Crib; Children's and others. Quilts will be labeled with the name of the person providing the quilt or quilts. Other handmade articles will also be shown.

Love offerings are being accepted for a queen-size quilt which was made by one of the members of the Christian Sisters. The pattern is called "Flight of the Swallows." Any member of the

Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 133, San Antonio, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest and sincere sympathy to the family and friends of our departed lodge sister, AGNES KRENEK POPP. Agnes Popp, age 87, died on June 24, 1994. She was born in Nada, Texas and was the oldest of 11 children. She left her family's cotton farm and came to San Antonio to work as a governess for the DeWinne, Ayers, and Fordtran families.

She married Adolph Popp in 1934 and raised five children. She loved her Czech culture and traditions and passed them on to her children and grandchildren. Agnes enjoyed traveling, dancing, and singing with all of her many friends.

Agnes stayed active in various Czech organizations such as the KJZT, the Czech Choral group, SPJST, Slavonic Mutual Fire Insurance, and St. Margaret Mary's Altar Society and Rosary Club.

Agnes was preceded in death by her husband, Adolph Popp; her daughter, Joann Kalmus and granddaughter, Jennifer Popp. She is survived by her children, Evelyn and Jerry Theis, John and Janet Popp, Irene and Jim McCoy, and Sharon Christian Sisters will accept offerings and you do not have to be present to be eligible for this drawing. Door prizes will be given away each hour and you do need to be present for these drawings.

Hand-made items and baked goods will be for sale in the Country Bazaar.

Signs will be posted on Highway 53 to identify the church.

Annual Westfest Taroky Tournament Sixth

Once again, the Directors of Westfest plan to host a Taroky Tournament in conjunction with the Westfest celebration.

The tournament will be held at the West Community Center in West, Texas on Saturday, September 3rd. The tournament is open to all interested tarok players—ladies and gentlemen-18 years of age or older.

Entry fee will be $15 per person with registration beginning at 8 a.m. and play starting at 9:30 a.m. Play should conclude about 5:30 p.m. Kolaches and coffee will be served during registration.

Lunch is included in the registration fee

Participants, your talent in crafts, individual and group talent and Royalty proved each of you a winner. We appreciate your time and dedication. The same is to be said for the parents and leaders.

None of this would be possible without your love and support of these youth.

District Six Campers Recreate Woodstock Theme for Summer Camp Dear Vestnik Readers, On the weekend of June 17-19, a group of 60 SPJST youth and adults from Lodge 4, Hallettsville; Lodge 28, East Bernard; Lodge 30, Taiton; Lodge 40, El Campo Hillje, and Lodge 97, Placedo, attended District Six summer camp at Camp Lone Star in La Grange.

Sharon Borak, Brandi Dum, Craig Dorotik, Craig Dornak, Michael Kaspar, Bradley Krpec, Jeremy Kalmus, Tucker Scott, and Jeff Holly served as leader-intraining (L.I.T.'s) for the camping weekend. These youth attended LIT Retreat and were in charge of helping out with various responsibilities at camp, such as flag ceremonies, devotionals, party planning, games, dancing, and singing. I would also like to thank Craig Dorotik who also served as camp lifeguard.

The camp opened Friday afternoon with DYC Marcy Dorotik giving introductions, rules and cabin assignments.

Once everyone was settled in, activities began with all the youth going swimming and an outdoor pizza supper. After supper we began on our camp craft making tie-dye t-shirts. Although it was somewhat on the messy side, with a little bit of positive thinking the shirts turned out to be fabulous. I know the adults had a wonderful time working with all the dye and I want to thank them for all their help with the craft. The remainder of the evening was spent around the camp fire.

Campers sang songs and roasted marshmallows. All first-time campers were introduced and welcomed. The evening concluded with a devotional and everyone singing "Kum Ba Yah", Saturday morning activities began with more group singing. We then finished up the tie-dye t-shirts and the campers enjoyed playing war games with

12/VESTNIK—Wednesday, August 10 1994 their water guns. By the way, the announcement was never made but the Red Team won. Sorry, Blue Team, maybe next year. Afternoon activities consisted of swimming, and free time of volleyball, basketball, and playground activities. Before supper we also managed to get a quick dance of "Popcorn" in.

Saturday night the 60's time era found its way back to Camp Lone Star. The LIT's presented "Woodstock 94" for the SPJST campers. The campers and adults all wore their tie-dye t-shirts, complimented with flowers in their hair and painted faces depicting 60's themes.

Masterswere of Ceremonies LIT's Craig Dornak and Jeremy Kalmus. They welcomed campers to sit back a enjoy a "Blast to the Past."

Attending this year's Woodstock, we had a group come all the way from the village to perform "YMCA." The "Village People,- featuring Jeff Holly, Michael Kaspar, Craig Dornak, Craig Dorotik, and Jody Krpec delivered an encore performance. Also back together for a Woodstock appearance, singing "I Got You Babe" was "Sonny and Cher" a.k.a. Brandi Dum and Robert Foreman.

The show ended with everyone getting up and dancing to "YMCA." The campers then played parachute games, and danced. Unfortunately, our party was cut short due to heavy rain. However, thanks to the terrific staff at Camp Lone Star we were allowed to serve our ice cream floats in the cabins. The campers still managed to have a good time although being confined to their cabins, due to the weather, by playing games and staying up late.

Sunday morning activities included swimming, canoeing, and watermelon refreshments. District Six Camp concluded with the flag ceremony and thank you's to everyone.

District Six wants to thank our special guest SPJST Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar for stopping by and visiting with us. We really appreciated your coming and we hope you had a great time. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my chaperones who helped make this year's District Six youth camp such a huge success. District Six chaperones were from Lodge No. 30 Talton, Wanda Dorotik, Tommy Drapela, and Lisa Bubela; from Lodge No. 4 Hallettsville, Philip Vahalik and Wilma Wagner; from Lodge No. 32 Victoria, Johnnie Richardson; from Lodge No. 40 El Campo-Hillje, Danny Borak; and from Lodge No. 97 Placedo, Diana and Robert Dum. A special thanks to Becky Dluhos and Monica Staff of Lodge No. 30 Taiton, who attended this year'S camp as our camp nurses. I know it's not an easy job attending to all the campers over the weekend and we really appreciate all your time to come and help us out.

To my LIT's, you all did a wonderful job this year thanks for all your help. I am very proud of all of you. I couldn't have done camp without you being there.

20, Granger LIT Reflects on District Two Camp Lodge

Dear Vestnik, My last year as an LIT at District Two camp was fantastic; however, it tugged at my heart as it was one of the last youth achievements I'll do for the SPJST. I'll soon be 18 and be too old to participate a a youth club member.

I would like to take this opportunity to urge also youth club members to be active and to participate in your youth club. Give camp a chance—get back to nature. Swimming, canoeing, games, archery, horseback riding, and ultimately, helping to keep District Two camp a tradition.

Lori Greger of Lodge 47, Danny Baker of Lodge 24 and I, from Lodge 20, will always remember all of the hikes, rides and spooky trails we created for others to enjoy. 47, Seaton Youth Club Reports on July Meeting Lodge

Dear Readers, The July meeting of the Lodge 47 Youth Club was held on Tuesday night, July 5. We had 22 members, two adults and two visitors present.

At this meeting, we selected the members to serve on all of our committees. I was chosen as photographer. I hope to have many pictures of our youth club activities in the Vestnik.

Youth Leader Ginger Greger discussed the events to be held in July. We had the District Two Youth Achievement Day, a lock-in, a swimming party and camp.

Speaking of Y.A.D., which was held on Sunday, July 10, a very special congratulations goes out to our very own Melanie Koslovsky for winning the title of District Two • Queen. Also, congratulations to Lori Greger for being selected as runnerup. Melanie's duchess was Rachel aca and Lori's duchess was Lisa Greger. And let us not forget all of the participants and winners who entered their projects.

Another Czech Class at Alief Alief Evening School, under the auspices of Alief Independent School District, is offering another Czech language course this fall at Hastings High School. The location of this school is between Bellaire Blvd. on the south and Alief-Clodine on the north, on the southwest side of the intersection of Cook Road and High Star Drive in the community of Alief in southwestern Houston.

The first lesson of this 12-week course, designed to develop basic skill in the Czech language wherever it is spoken, will be on Wednesday, August 24, 1994, and henceforth, once a week, always on Wednesdays from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuition, set by the school, will be $40 and the instructor will again be John J.
