Youth Showcase This Weekend SPJST Youth Club members from around the state will be converging on the Temple area this weekend for the annual SPJST State Royalty Competition and Youth Achievement Day Contests. A detailed schedule of both day's events appear on the front page of this week's

Vestnik.

State Youth Director Joni Lange cordially extends an invitation to all SPJST members and friends of the Society to come out and enjoy both days of programming.

"Your attendance i s so important," Sister Lange says. "It generates a special kind of warmth for our young people when they see the adults turn out and show their support."

I know what she means. I remember when I was in school, competing in various academic and athletic contests. It made all the difference in the world knowing that the auditorium was packed or that the bleachers were full.

In addition to coming out and showing your support, come on out and plan to have a good time. This year's crop of Royalty contestants, project entrants and talent contestants should put on quite a show. Hope to see you there! *** Style ...

Service with a Several years ago, when my wife and I lived in Denver, we bought a home.

Although we didn't have a realtor, the seller did. The agent-his name was John-impressed me then-and he still does today.

All of the negotiations and transactions related to our purchase of the home took place at John's real estate office. He liked selling and it showed. The walls of his office were covered with sales awards.

Even more impressive was the courteous and knowledgeable way he responded to our questions regarding our first home purchase.

After closing on the deal, John let us know that if we ever decided to sell the house, he would appreciate our business.

During the two years we owned the property, we received no fewer than five cards and letters from John. Never a hard sell.

Just little reminder that he was still out there ... That kind of professionalism and courtesy-before, during and after the sale-pays. Over the next two years, I referred three friends to John who were looking to either buy or sell homes.

Customer service pays. It doesn't matter if you're selling homes, selling tomatoes, or trying to build membership in a lodge. People want to feel like they're important. And why shouldn't they? It's true.

In almost every active lodge, there is an important and active core groupmembers who perform much of the routine necessary to keep the lodge going.

With each passing day, their challengesas managers-continue to increase and

grow more complex. In response, several of our lodges have had or have posted notices of "important" membership meetings. They realize that the future of their lodges-and indeed of the SPJSTdepends on their ability to "impress" our current and prospective members on the benefits of belonging to the SPJST. "What works well in one area of the state may not fly in another," observes Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar. "That's why it's important to get the input of the membership when contemplating any major shifts in lodge policy or development. It's kind of like buying a house. All members need the opportunity to review the important details beforehand."

As a fraternal society, active lodges are one of the best potential customer services that we have to offer.

Active

lodges are able to extend to their certificate holders a range of value-added benefits, including family-oriented social activities, youth programs and the opportunity to participate in community service projects.

And just as important, active lodges are where you find leads for new business.

"All of us have to do whatever we can to help our lodges establish an atmosphere where people want to be a part of what is going on," says State Field Manager Gene McBride. "This, in return, will activate new membership and stimulate existing members to get active."

Lodges working to reestablish their fraternal footholds are encouraged to contact their district directors or the SPJST Home Office as the need arises for one-on-one assistance. "That's why we're here," Brother Leshikar concludes.

That's the title of a recent book by H. Jackson Brown. It's a neat little collection of thoughts about life. Here are a few that bear repeating ... and contemplating.

Someone will always be looking at you as an example of how to behave. Don't let him down.

From the President's Office Czech Language Allocations Available to Local Lodges

Keith Gatewood, FIC State Field Representative Insurance Department 3 Years of Service

In his position as State Field Representative for District One and District Two, Brother Keith Gatewood provides service and support to our -volunteer sales force.

"My greatest desire for the SPJST is to see everyone working towards a common goal," he says. "Although I am not of direct Czech descent, am proud to be associated with an organization founded and maintained by hardworking, dedicated Americans. I want to see us grow and prosper in spite of the distractions many families face today."

As part of his job, Brother Gatewood presents continuing education seminars, sales workshops, trains new sales representatives and works with local lodges to build membership.

In addition to holding the licensed title of Fraternal Insurance Counselor, Brother GateWood also holds a Group I insurance license for selling health and life insurance in the State of Texas. He is a graduate of Belton High School and a graduate of McLennan Community College in Waco. He also attended Texas A&M

University in College Station and has participated in various insurance sales training seminars.

Brother Gatewood is an active member of Lodge 66, Waco where he is currently serving as president and a member of the Board of Trustees. He previously served his lodge as its bookkeeper and hall floor chairman and is the Alternate Insurance Committee Representative for District Three.

Before working for SPJST, Brother Gatewood worked in retail sales-and in insurance sales. His hobbies include golf, computers and working around the house.

Although he says there have been many memorable occasions working for the SPJST, some of his fondest recollections are of the times he spent working with past Supreme Lodge Vice President Bernie Gebala. "We shared many times together—going to lodge functions or to classes. We talked about a wide range of topics and subjects. It always made the trips more enjoyable," Brother Gatewood recalls, adding, "As Bernie always reminded us, 'We're gonna' do good.' " —SPJST-

For 1994, several lodges have already finished classes, with the number of students enrolled ranging from 12 to 40 per class.

Czech class allocations are still available. Any SPJST lodge wishing to hold Czech classes for a minimum of 15 hours with a minimum of at least five students may apply. The amount per lodge is $200. Students should also pay a fee for these classes. Each local lodge is to handle their own class and to report to the Supreme Lodge on how the money was spent and the number of students who were enrolled.

No credits will be given for completion of the courses. The classes should, however, provide those interested with a good opportunity to develop a better

Lodge Karel Jonas, No. 28, East Bernard to Meet August 14 Dear Members, The second Sunday, the 14th of August will, again, be the scheduled date for the monthly meeting of Lodge Karel Jon g. It will convene at 2 p.m. in the meeting room at 106 Leveridge Street, which is on the ground floor of the SPJST Hall Building.

The agenda will follow the established "Order of Business" with items needing immediate attention being considered first under "old" and/or "new" business.

A fraternal hour luncheon is also on the agenda.

With a good quorum and guests present, the monthly meeting on the second Sunday of July, the 10th, convened on time. The meeting lasted a little over a half hour, having no "old" and/or "new" business after all of the reports were given.

Brother Jim Wiest, the state field manger for District Six and Seven, made a brief report and was one of the three guests. Thanks for stopping by. We were glad you could visit with us.

The other two guests were "Willie" Corbett and Julie Gavranovic, wife of the late Joe Gavranovic, who was a radio personality on the radio station in Rosenberg. Thank you both or visiting with us.

Enough food was donated by the members that seconds could be had by the heaviest eaters and then some.

47, Seaton Czech Classes Start This Wednesday, August 3 Lodge

16, Lodge 17, New Tabor held its Fifth Annual Tarok Tournament on July 16. 48 players from across Texas completed for the prizes. Thank yous go out to the members of Lodge 17 for the delicious noon meal, snacks, and for hosting the tournament. Thanks also go to Lodge FAC Clarence Sefcik, District One Director Andrew Vavra and State FAC Frank Klinkovsky and his wife, Irma and to all of the players who came out for a day of entertainment. Gmgratulations to all of the winners.

Mary Walker and her brother-in-law, V.J. Hajda, had to share the trophy which was given to the last place finisher—and since it was a tie, the New Tabor lodge will get an additional trophy. Even though the trophy was the back end of a horse, they both wanted it and were almost as happy as if they had won first place.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the day of Taroks.

Wednesday night for eight weeks.

Classes are two hours long. We have space for you. The total cost of these eight sessions is $10 and the instructor is Nick Morris.

66, Waco Reports on July Meeting

Dear Members, President Keith Gatewood called the meeting to order on July 17th at 2:30 p.m.

The membership then joined in with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for our departed member, Georgia Kofnovec. May she rest in pace. The roll call of officers indicted that all were present, except for YouthLeader Dana McAdams.

The minutes were read by Secretary Bonnie Pruitt and were approved with a correction.

Thank you notes were read from Sister Libbie Parma, the Georgia Kofnovec Family and Sister Bonnie Pruitt.

The minutes of the Board of Trustees meeting were read and approved.

The FAC reported on our next social game night which will be on September 12 at 7 p.m. Please bring snacks.

The Entertainment Committee reported that for our August 21 meeting, barbecue on a bun would be served. Members are asked to bring desserts.

In her report, Darlene Engelke reported that all of the books were in order.

81, Needville Reports on July Meeting

Lodge

The regular July 1994 meeting of Lodge No. 81 was held on Sunday, the 17th at the hall in Needville. At 12 noon, a delicious dinner was enjoyed by 49 members and guests. The entree of chicken fried steak was furnished by the lodge. The lodge sisters—all excellent cooks—had prepared a variety of vegetables, salads and deserts. Sister Mary Werner and her kitchen committee thanked everyone who brought food and helped in the kitchen.

At 1 p.m.. President Adolph Macha called the business meeting to order.

James Pavlicek and Bradley Vallet led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

A moment of silence was observed'in memory of our departed brother, Robert Vacek. May he rest in peace. Sympathy is extended to his family.

All officers were present for roll call.

President Macha then introduced our two special guests, James Pavlicek and Bradley Valley, who are Lodge No. 81's scholarship recipients for 1994-1995.

Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes of the minutes of the June 1994 meeting which were approved with one minor correction. Correspondence received included a thank you letter from James Pavlicek.

The monthly financial report of Treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendall was accepted as read.

Special Fund Treasurer brother Gilbert Walzel reported on the events scheduled for the lodge hall in the coming month.

His report of expenses, income, and balances in the Special Fund was accepted as read.

On our sick list are social member Lydia Hortman, Bernice Kusy, Mary Ann Fojtik, Joseph Zela and Alvin Palat. We wish all of you a complete recovery.

Under old business, Brother Walzel reported that the City of Needville has distributed gravel to the lodge driveway as requested.

The presentation of Lodge No. 81 scholarships was next on the agenda.

Both recipients are June 1994 graduates of Needville High School and both will

be attending Texas A&M University.

Bradley Vallet will be enrolled in the bio-medical field, working toward a major in veterinary medicine. Bradley is the son of Gilbert, Jr. and Corliss Vallet and the grandson of Benita and Gilbert Walzel. Paternal grandparents are the Gilbert Vallets, Sr. Bradley and his brother, Jason, and sister, Melissa, are all member of Lodge 81, along with his parents and grandparents.

James Pavlicek and his family live in Damon, Texas. At Texas A&M, James will be majoring in chemical engineering.

Present to see him receive his SPJST scholarship were his parents, Eugerie and Linda Pavlicek and his younger brother, Robert. His maternal grandparents are Gladys and Walter Stehle of Damon.

Both youth men expressed their thanks to Lodge No. 81 for the scholarships.

Bradley's grandfather Walzel and James' mother, Linda, also addressed members with some humorous incidents about preparing for college. Lodge members wish success to Bradley and James in your studies and may you achieve the goals that you have set for yourselves.

Our next regular meeting is set for Sunday, August 21, 1994 at noon in the lodge hall in Needville. President Adolph and Sister Delores Macha have generously volunteered to furnish barbecue for the August meeting. Members will, as usual, bring a vegetable dish and dessert.

Door prizes donated by the lodge were won by Edwin Susan, Willie Mae Kuykendall, Ben Tydlecka and Elsie Brdecka.

84, Dallas to Honor Sales Representatives on August 15 Lodge

Dear Members and Friends, Lodge No. 84 will host, along with Lodge No. 130, a reception with finger foods and a "Happy Hour" at 6:30 p.m., Monday, August 15th. The reception will be in honor of the wonderful sales representatives from both of our lodges. All members are encouraged to attend this

function, showing appreciation for all the hard work that these people do. Without the sales representatives, our individual lodge growth would not exist.

Members are also encouraged to attend the meeting immediately following the reception. The meetings are an important part of the democratic process in our society. Your participation is essential to the better governing of the lodge you have chosen to be a member of.

The members of each lodge are also asked to donate a dessert item to the evening if possible. Nothing fancy—just get your husband in the kitchen and ask him to whip up a batch of brownies for a good cause!

84, Dallas Reports on July Meeting

Dear Members, Our meeting last Monday was well attended. President Yeager had invited members of Lodge 130 to hear our guest, Brother Jerry Bartos, who attended the seminar on foreign policy of the Czech Republic on June 4 - 5 in Washington, D.C. In his presentation, he urged all to support full NATO membership for the Czech Republic. He encouraged members to contact their district congressmen and senators to seek their support. Thank you, Brother Bartos, for a very informative talk in a limited time.

Sunshine Committee Report Delivered by Brother Ben Jarma in the absence of Sister Tydlaska. Sympathy cards had been sent to the Janousek Family and to the Agnes Janecka Family.

A get well card went to Paul Hagar. A congratulations card went to the Richard Andreason Family as they have a new baby girl to love. Richard hires all of the bands for our dances as well as helping with the bar. I know that you know that our lodge president, Sister Justine Yeager, is the grandmother and Sid and Justine Pokladnik are the great-grandparents!

Brother David Andreason, who is one of our sales representatives, is the grandfather.

Bar Report - Delivered by Sister Salac in the absence of Brother Jones.

Hall Rental Report - Delivered by Brother Emily Petr. He gave his usual great report on rentals and work.

Youth Report - Youth Leader Bessie Petr gave a detailed report on District Three camp and the fun had there. She thanked the members of Lodge 84 for the meat patties and an evening of great hamburgers thoroughly enjoyed by the campers.

She then announced that the teens would be sponsoring a spaghetti supper and game night at the lodge on Wednesday, August 3. The evening starts at 6:30 p.m. And, don't forget, the Annual Princess Ball will be on August 20. Dance entertainment will be provided by Fritz-Hodde and the Fabulous Six. Finally, congratulations to King Chris Coker and Duke Danny Coker who were selected at Y.A.D.to represent District Three in the SPJST State Royalty Contest.

FAC Rejcek reported on the dues collected. Brother Ben Jarma then reported that the Czech Culture Society would meet on August 29.

Your donations, including plants, to the country store, cake walk, and gift booth are welcome. The dinner will he served from 12:30 until 2 p.m. Dancing starts at 4 p.m.

In the House Committee Report, Brother Salac reported on the work done on the electrical items (breakers, bulbs, etc) and air filter. He thanked Brother Petr for a fine job on the hedge trimming.

Kovanda's Czech Band will be playing at the lodge on August 6. Fritz Hodde and the Fabulous Six will he played at the Princess Ball on August 20.

The Country Boys will he playing on September 17. Now, how long has it been since you heard Ray Dlahaj and the boys play "El Rancho Grande?" On August 17, the Entertainment Committee members will meet at 7 p.m. to address letters for mailing. Also, make a note that our Casino Night will be held on February 24, 1995.

88, Houston Reports on July Meeting

Lodge

On July 11, 1994, we had our monthly meeting at the lodge. The meeting opened at 7:30 p.m.

The Migl girls, Darlene and Marlene, and Lindsey Michalek presented the flags and recited the Pledge of Allegiance. The names of the deceased were read. All the officers were present and Secretary Mildred Holeman read the minutes which were approved.

Communications were read, from the children of Frank Lampza, thanking the lodge for the flowers and for Judy Smith, who was such a precious young lady.

Vlasta Slanina, who was noted for her poppyseed cakes, died this past May. Mrs. Olga Zarr was also a lovely person—she was a Hruska and had many relatives in our lodge. We will certainly miss all of these beautiful people.

We had some visitors at our meeting who were brought by Victor Janak. They are taking Czech lessons from Mr. Souchek.

Our secretary read 29 applications and all were accepted.

Entertainment Chairman Viola Cox reported on the dances.

Viola reported on the balance of dances that would he taking place through July. She also reported on the August dances that would be taking place before our next meeting. Texas Brew will he playing on Friday, August 5 and The New Edition, a popular polka hand, will play for us on Saturday, August 6.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Homer Alexander announced that he would he having a defensive driving course at the lodge on August 18 and 19.

Barbara Linney gave the youth report.

She had two car washes and did very well. Those children are constantly

working to make money for their camping trip. They are trying to hard to raise money and Barbara and Marie are working with them.

The youth are donating money to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 2 in Needville to apply towards their piano fund.

I had already mailed my Birthday Club article when I received some more mail—so I am sending this letter a little later. Evelyn Mikolas, our ticket salesman, celebrated her 80th birthday on June 12. She had a great surprise. She had been invited out by her nieces and nephews, Scott and Beth Baethe, Judy Glenn and Jonathan Schumann. Imagine her surprise when they arrived and 17 relatives were singing "Happy Birthday!"

She said she couldn't believe her eyes, seeing everybody—especially her sister and husband, Gladys and Bill Craven from Dallas, and their children—Deborah and Mary Hayes, Gary and Mark Hayes, Gary and Jean Marie Craven; and sons, Sam Kyle and Matthew from Plano.

Other guests included her brother and his wife, Joyce and her father, Lloyd Hanson.

Gladys and Bill hosted the party, which was enjoyed by all. Evelyn is loved by all of her relatives.

Viola Cox, chairman of the Entertainment Committee, had a brief report. The six-month schedule for the rest of the year are now ready for you to pick up.

Margaret Allbritton stated that there would he a Blue Room Party on August 14 from 4 until 5 p.m. Music will he by the Central Sounds.

President Tom Marsh reported for the Men's Club. The Men's Club is still a very important club, since they are constantly doing work for the upkeep of the lodge.

Our charming Naomi, who never says "no" to anyone, is working so very hard on this "Womanless Wedding" which she'll present on Sunday, September 25 from 2 p.m. until ? There will he no charges—in other words, it will he "free."

However, there is so much work to this project. If you want to attend, we'd he delighted. Naomi is asking for pastries.

Hamburgers, french fries and hot coffee will also be available. Tim, Naomi's brother, I understand, will help with all the arrangements on the stage.

Tim and Rosalie have spent three weeks with Rosalee's cousin in Praha.

They had a good time.

Our youth had a beautiful Youth Achievement Day here several weeks ago. Marie Stayton and Barbara Linney were pleased since we had a big crowd. I must say it was an afternoon well spent.

We members need to attend these functions for the children.

The next thing is camp. There are so many young people ready to go who are planning on a big time.

As I previously mentioned, Victor Janak brought some guests to our monthly meeting—Mr. and Mrs. Bill Rosene. I spoke with Effie and she said that she enjoyed our meeting very much.

I was saddened to hear Victor say that his mother, Mary Johnson, was in the ICU in the Heights Hospital since last Friday. Mary is 93 and she says she'll drive her car until she's 96.

A.J. Stayton reported for the Board and then we adjourned for an evening of fellowship. Nat Gonzales prepared hot dogs, watermelon and chips.

107, Floresville to Honor 50-Year Members August 14

Our July meeting was called to order

by President Bayer. The Pledge to the Flag was led by Youth Club President Jolene Spillers.

The roll was called. Vice President Pruski and FAC Pruski were absent.

Lillie Chilek and April Bayer were back on the sick list. We sincerely hope that they are improving and that good health will be theirs in the future.

The minutes were read and approved as read. President Bayer reported that we are lacking in insurance sales for the incentive program. He urged all members to help the sales representatives.

The youth leader reported that each young person who had donated toward the piano fund had received a personal thank you note. Winners from Y.A.D. were announced and camp plans were finalized.

There was no FAC report.

Pauline Bayer made two insurance sales.

Our August 14th meeting will he very important. Plans are that pictures are to he taken of our 50-year members and also of all who helped in the tree planting and donated toward the trees. A covered dish meal will he served after the adult meeting. The lodge will supply the meat and each family is asked to bring a side dish and a dessert. We would like to have a large group present to show our apprecia-

tion to our loyal members.

We would also like to carry out a 50s theme in decorations; so, if any member has some 1950s memorabilia, we would appreciate using it to bring back old memories.

50-year honorees, please ask you families to come celebrate the occasion with us.

The youth will be meeting at 3 p.m.

Adults will meet at 4 p.m. There will be a meal after the adult meeting.

130, Dallas Reports on July Meeting

We began our meeting with an invitation from Lodge No. 84 to hear our City Councilman Brother Jerry Bartos regarding the admission of the Czech Republic to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

He urged all of us to write our congressmen and senators and urge the administration to press for this admission.

Brother Bartos was in Washington in June, meeting with 69 other CzechAmerican citizens with the Ambassador from the Czech Republic regarding this important matter.

These people stay busy just taking care of these marvelous agricultural products, then feeding them at every opportunity to people like me and my husband Bill! Hospitality is a constant, and ingrained.

I must mention family life—living examples of an extended family. Our friends, for example, Jarek and Annie Slichta, live with their three children; next door is Annie's sister, Martiska and her husband Jaromir Styblo and little Jaromirek, and last, but very importantly, Stafenka and StaTeCek (grandma and grandpa) Drohilec—their parents.

And everyone is related to every one it seems or are at least close friends.

They rely on and help each other even building their own houses after hours. Jarek tells us if the political leaders of the world held their meetings in wine cellars there would he no wars—no major differences.

Friend Polda Vlk says their biggest riches are and have always been their wonderful nights lighted by the brightest moon and stars, their beautiful sunny days, their brand of klid (quiet) which you can hear, their sense of tradi-

tion and values. "Nadherny'", he says.

That means marvelous.

I think our friends Jackie and Bennie Marek and Bennie's aunt, Ella Orsak would agree. They were there last year as was Lou Muniza and his sister Georgia Krenek. Lou still hasn't forgotten the bliss of that smradlavy (stinky) Olomucni tvarovy syr (cheese rounds from Olomouc) on rye with carroway seeds (kmin) bread slathered with butter accompanied by Jarek's red wine. Georgia taped Starenka singing her heart out about Moravia (the kind of thing for which one was previously incarcerated). What a way to learn about the world!

Friends Sidney and Jerry Voda intend to do it, again—this September. We feel sad so many people take only highly structured, organized tours and miss this beautiful opportunity to day trip and to live and learn from a village such as Hlohovec.

Oh, and one more thing. We urge you to continue your Czech lessons.

Generally one can get by—they're so helpful there. But I almost ran into big trouble when I ordered 30 slices of cheese for our American hamburger party and the lady at the counter had sliced up 5 kilos (about ten - twelve pounds) before I stopped her. That was a lot of cheese! I'm still not clear on where I went wrong.

Wednesday, August 3, 1994—VESTNIK/7 Continuing on, our regular meeting convened at 7:45 p.m. and was opened by President Keith Shinn with the Pledge of Allegiance. Because of the absence of Secretary Stanley Vrla, a motion was made and seconded that the minutes be postponed until the next meeting.

Treasurer Gene Parma's report was approved as read. Legal Committee Chairman Brother Shinn reported that no decision has reached Lodge 130 regarding the recent litigation.

The Czech Culture Committee reported that Czech classes were starting at the Czech Club on July 21 with Robert Cox as organizer. The next Czech Club meeting will be held on August 29th.

The Sunshine Committee reported that Sister Kathy Pottkotter was recuperating from surgery. Beseda Director Martha Vrla stated that practice for our upcoming Performance in San Antonio has been going well and that the schedule of performances was given. The best part about these rehearsals has not been the perfection of our dancing, but the wonderful fraternalism experienced by the performers. We have been meeting at the home of Richard and Helen Brown, who so graciously have opened their home, their pool and their barbecue grill for us.

So the practice ends up being a social affair, and we sincerely appreciate all their hospitality.

We will perform the Narodni Beseda on Friday night, the Ceska and Morayska on Saturday and the children will have their program on Sunday. Hopefully, the weather might cool down just a little bit, but we really don't expect it to!

Under Old Business, the lodge camp out was discussed and it was voted on that we try to obtain space at Camp Elowi on the last weekend in September.

133 San Antonio Reports on July Meeting Lodge

Lodge 133 held their regular monthly meeting on Sunday, July 17th at St. Margaret Mary's Activity Center in San Antonio. Visiting guests were SPJST District Director Bob Bayer and State Sales Representative Jim Weist.

A moment of silence was held in memory of Agnes Popp and all deceased members of Lodge No. 133. It was reported that Frank Fajkus is recovering from an injured hack and related injuries.

We wish him a speedy recovery.

The month of July has been designated by the Supreme Lodge to feature SPJST Sales Representatives. Members are asked to support and encourage our sales representatives. District Director Bob Bayer informed members that the SPJST had maintained its A (Excellent ) rating as issued by the A.M.Best Rating Service. State Sales Representative Jim Wiest also addressed the membership.

Jim encouraged members to let their friends, neighbors and relatives know about the benefits of SPJST and that our Pictured at right are Trudy Pavliska and Mila Phelps, two members of Lodge 133, San Antonio who celebrated birthdays at the July _lodge meeting.

148, El Maton Annual Barbecue Attracts Large Crowd Lodge

Dear Readers, We had more than 300 members come out for our annual barbecue in June.

Door prizes were presented to those who stayed for the meeting and dinner.

Fifty year pins were presented by Frank Hahn, David Zielonka and District Six Director Matt Vanek. Emil Morris was also presented with a plaque in recognition of his 28 years as lodge president.

We also had a lot of guests in attendance. These included Jim Wiest, who is the State Field Representative for District Six and District Seven; Marie Stayton, District Five Youth Counselor and Dottie Watkins, Assistant DYC, from Lodge 172, Pasadena.

We hope that next year's event is even bigger and better. Our next meeting will be held at the Frank Hahn, Sr. home in September.

Lodge 154, Fort Worth Reports on July Meeting Our meeting on Sunday, July 10, was held at Brother C.L. and Sister Patti Gage's lake home in Decateur. After a great meal, we had a short meeting.

Sister Rose Steinman called the meeting to order and led us in the pledge to our flag. Members remained standing for a moment of silent prayer for our deceased members, Sister Margie Cline and Brother John P. Kret.

Our sincere sympathy goes out to the families and may they rest in peace.

After a few reports, the meeting adjourned to join in on fishing, games, songs and a lot of fellowship.

Our next meeting will be on Sunday, August 14, at 3 p.m.

We were happy to have our members and friends to arrive home safely from Prague on Thursday, the 14th.

Nothing but raves and looking forward to all meeting at the hall on Wednesday,' the 20th with pictures and videos.

Brother Jerry and Sister Henrietta Milan had to leave that Friday for Florida for Sister Henrietta's showing at a gallery there.

Sister Kelly Eaton arrived home safely from Alaska, where she taught gymnastics. Her daughter, Abbe, is here visiting with her grandmother, Sister Mary Jean Stoeppelman and great-grandmother, Sister Mary Renfro. She will join her family from Chicago here on August 9th.

Have you all been suffering the heat like we have?

I will be leaving on the 30th for St. Louis to he with my sister and her family until August 20, so it may be a little cooler.

About 15 youth members left yesterday for camp. Sisters Jeanie Mason and Rose Steinman helped getting some there and Sister Mason said they stayed and ate with them before returning home. Heard the food was delicious and that Sister Bessie Petr was back with them and doing great.

I know they will have a lot to talk about when they get back.

Remember the meeting on August 14th at 3 p.m.

155, Austin Summer Picnic Scheduled This Sunday, August 7

The summer picnic that had been postponed is now to take place on Sunday, August 7, at 3 p.m. It will he held at the home of Clarence and Doris Boriski located at No. 18 Oak Cliff Circle in the Deer Creek Ranch subdivision—and not at the lake as had previously been planned. Do not turn onto the road to the lake. Keep straight—missing the turn to the lake—and turn right on the top of the hill.

From Austin, take Bee Cave Road from MoPac South, then take Hwy. 71 until you reach F.M. 3238 which is between the Texaco and Exxon stations.

Turn left and travel for six miles; cross the second bridge and turn left to the Deer Creek Ranch subdivision. Keep following the plate signs until you reach their home on Oak Cliff Circle.

Let's all turn out for this treat.

Night Returns to Austin Aqua Fest

Czech

Austin's annual Aqua Festival will once again feature a Czech - German festival night on August 12. The special night, which will place an emphasis on Czech and German music and entertainment, was revived after being absent from the program for several years. The Austin Aqua Festival takes place on Auditorium Shores, west of the Congress Avenue Bridge over Town Lake and north of Palmer Auditorium. The gate entrance to the Aqua Festival is on Riverside Drive.

Czech and German night will take place on August 12 from 7 p.m. until 12:30 a.m. and will feature ethnic foods, dance bands and entertainment for the entire family. And, of course, kolaches and strudel will he for sale.

Czech entertainment scheduled includes the popular Vrazel Polka Band and the Bobby Jones Czech Band of Wharton. There will also he performances by the West Folk Dancers and the Texas Czech Folk Singers of Dallas.

German entertainment will include the Bavarian Village Band, Dutch Treat and the Walburg Boys. Dancing area will he provided in front of the River City Stage.

A "skipper pin," purchased prior to the festival—which runs from Thursday, August 4 through Saturday, August 13, can be purchased for $1 at H.E.B. stores, NationsBank, Bank One, Cattleman's Bank, Taco Bell and Dart Bow. The pin enables you to get in for a discounted price. Children 12 and under are admitted free.

There will he entertainment and rides for visitors of all ages—including teenagers, in an area known as Teen Town.

Sewing Circle Reports on Activities Ennis

The Ennis Sewing Circle met on July 14, 1994. President Sadie Kubin called the meeting to order. Three guests and 26 members were welcomed. Our guests were Lucy Denton, Wilma Nesuda and Ann Haskovec. What happened to the men guests? As far as I can remember, that is the first time that no men were present at our meeting. We expect to see you men at the next meeting.

The Pledge of Allegiance was repeated and a few moments of silence were observed in memory of Mrs. Mary Ozuna and Johnnie Hrabina.

In the absence of the secretary, Sister Emilie Harrison read and took the minutes. The treasurer gave the financial report. Both reports were approved as read. We welcomed Wilma Nesuda and Ann Haskovec as new members. The quitters were happy to have the new members help with the quilting. The quilt was quilted for Sister Rose Bednar.

Sister Rose Bednar, who is in charge of the quilting, would like to thank all of the quitters for doing a great job. Sincere sympathy is extended to Sister Libbie Elsik, Wilma Nesuda and Ann Haskovec.

A speedy recovery is wished for Sister Vallie Tupy, who had eye surgery recently and Milan Dujka, husband of Sister Agnes Dujka. A get well card and money gift was sent to Sister Vallie Tupy.

Donations A money donation and a nice thank you note was received from Georgia Stransky, the daughter of Sister Rosie Zazvorka. The note was in behalf of Rosie Zazvorka. There was also a thank you from Frances Sparks for the quilt quilted, and from Hattie Moucka, a memorial for Georgia Janousek, and thanks to Louise Vlacilek for the napkins.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to the July birthday celebrants.

We will have the "White Elephant Sale" again at the next meeting. So, those of you who missed it last month, you will have another chance to bring some items and to purchase others. Bring your pocketbook.

It was good to see Sister Genevieve Prochaska hack with us after missing several meetings.

Sister Annie Kostak and Charlie Bouska, father of Sister Ella Mae Zmolek, are now residing in the 1.0.0.F. Home.

Sister Patricia and Van Fowler were surprised on their 25th wedding anniversary with a party at SPJST Lodge 25.

They celebrated this event with family and friends. The annual reunion of the Kristina and Joseph Zemanek family was held July 4th weekend at Lake Cypress Springs. Their five children—all members of the SPJST—Liddie Pavelka, Victor Zemanek, Martha Johnston, Sidney Bridewell, and Joseph Zemanek and families, enjoyed fishing, swimming, skiing, sailing, horse shoe pitching, basketball, riding on a wave rider, jet skiiing, paddle boating and playing dominoes.

Fifty were present, including the oldest couple, James and Liddie Pavelka, accompanied by Betty Steagall, retired nurse.

Brethren Church to Host Quilt Show on August 13

The Christian Sisters of Ocker Brethren Church at Zabcikville will sponsor a Country Quilt Show and Bazaar on Saturday, August 13, from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. It will be in the church fellowship building. The church is located on Highway 53, approximately 11 miles east of Temple.

An admission fee of $2 will be charged. Children under 12 will be admitted free. In addition to viewing the quilts, refreshments will be served and quilt booklets will be furnished to identify the various quilts.

Quilt patterns will be available at a minimum charge. The following classifications will be shown: Antique Historical (before 1933); Patchwork; Applique; Friendship; Embroidery; Tie tac; Machine-made; Crib; Children's and others. Quilts will be labeled with the name of the person providing the quilt or quilts. Other handmade articles will also be shown.

Love offerings are being accepted for a queen-size quilt which was made by one of the members of the Christian Sisters. The pastern is called "Flight of the Swallows." Any member of the Christian Sisters will accept offerings and you do not have to be present to be eligible for this drawing. Door prizes will be given away each hour and you do need to be present for these drawings.

Hand-made items and baked goods will be for sale in the Country Bazaar.

Signs will he posted on Highway 53 to identify the church.

Victoria County CHS to Host Summer State Meeting on August 27 The Victoria County Czech Heritage Society will host a summer State Meeting in Victoria, Texas on Saturday, August 27, 1994 at the KC Hall, located on the corner of Airline Road and Ben Wilson Street.

Registration begins at 9:30 a.m.

Entertainment will be provided by Father Greg Korenek on the accordion and the Victoria Czech Singers. Lunch will be served at 11 a.m. At 11:45 a.m., Raymond Snokhaus, Senior Vice President, Government and Regulatory Affairs of Houston Industries, Inc. will speak on "Economy and Business Opportunities in the Czech Republic."

Reunions Rejcek Family Reunion The annual Rejcek Reunion will be August 6, 1994 at St. Martin's Hall in Tours. All descendants and friends of Anton Rejcek, Sr., Marie Picha, Florian Rejcek, Joe Rejcek, Theresa Devisan, John Rejcek, Bessie Kaska and Valentine Rejcek are invited to attend and join in the fun that we always have when we gather together.

Admission is $6 for families, $5 for couples and $3 for singles. Registration begins at 2 p.m., followed by bingo and games. Just like his peers, Jan Horak left Moravia to come to America to be free.

His journey began in December of 1855, after sailing eleven weeks in a shabby sailboat and landing in Galveston. From Galveston, his family moved to Cat Springs where they farmed for two years.

Since there were no public schools, the priests taught and preached in Czech.

When Jan Horak was 19, the Civil War broke out. Although his sympathies were with the North, he was forced to serve in the southern army. After serving three weeks, he was able to flee across the Rio Grande River where he fled to

New Orleans where he registered to serve under the Northern Army.

Although he was in the army for two-and one-half years, he fought in only one battle. Jan Horak was discharged on October 30, 1865.

When the war ended, Horak returned to farming for four years until he met his wife. In 1918, Jan Horak bought a piece of land near Fayetteville for farming.

I would like to thank everyone who is reading my articles. I was at my aunt's house in Houston and she said that her mom reads my articles. I didn't know that so many people subscribed to the Vestnik.

I was talking to my aunt the other day while I spent the week with her in Houston and we realized that by the time I get about 60 years old, there may not be very many people speaking Czech, because people our age do not care to

learn the language.

I am going to try to learn it more. Mr. Motal, from our lodge, is an expert in the Czech language and he is going to bring me a bunch of materials that will help teach the Czech language. I hope that others can also take the time to learn the language. Well, I guess I better give ya'll time to read the other articles. Thanks for reading mine.

took in the sights of Galveston, Texas on July 8, 1994.

We went to the Railroad Museum and then we walked the Strand.From there, we went to Sea Wolf Park where we ate lunch and toured the World War II submarine and battleship.

We then went to Moody Gardens to rest a bit. We then prepared for a cruise on the "Colonel," a paddle wheel boat. It took us for an hour-long ride through Galveston Bay. We had a great time and a great day.

Moravskosležský hudební skladatel Pavel Křížkovský a jeho zásluhy o národní uvědomění ve staré vlasti.

K 90.výročí vytištění životopisu Pavla Křížkovského v Rajhradě u Brna v roce 1904.

Věnováno texaským Moravanům Maraulova rodu a k nim spřízněným rodinám.

Sedmidílný článek - třetí část.

Křížkovského popularita vzn'istala a pěvecké spolky počaly ho jmenovati i čestným členem jako národního skladatele. První takový diplom přišel z Dvora Králové, v němž čteme: ,,---Milerádi vyznáváme, že jsme hned po prvém zazpívání vábných těch zvuků duchem národním vdechnutých ani nabažiti se nemohli-" a Křížkovský jim vyslovil svou radost nad diplomem, jelikož mu to sloužilo za důkaz, kterak se svoji ke svým hlásiti počínají: ,,,Vyznačením tak čestným cftím se povzbuzena a zavázána k vytrvalosti na dráze, po nížto jsem se dostal do vašeho středu- Přijmětež pravici, kterou Vám z družné Moravy srdečně a po bratrsku podává upřímný bratr Slovan Pavel Křížkovský." (Slovan tehdy na Moravě znamenalo tolik co Čech).

Neobyčejného úspěchu dosáhl Křížkovský o slavnosti sv. Jana Nepomuckého dne 16.května 1862 v Praze. Řídil tam sám svou ,,Utonulou" a tím pojistil si slávu předního národního skladatele pro všechny budoucí časy. Tehdy teprv, když ji s 50 spolky pěveckými, s 800 zpěváky, ve zkoušce půl druhé hodiny trvající osobně nacvičil a na koncertě řídil, přijata byla ,, Utonulá" s nadšením od obecenstva, kritiky a skladatelů, kteří nyní náležitě pochopili, ze kterého pramene je látka čerpána, jak se může látka taková moderně zpracovati a jak se dodělati můžeme hudby svérázné, národní, české.

Národní píseň ,,Bude vojna, bude" je tedy ten balvan z něhož Křížkovský vytesal zlatým kladívkem své tvůrčí síly svou ,,Utonulou" jako základní kámen mohutné budovy národní naší hudby - k níž on ještě mnohým vzácným kvádrem přispěl a která dnes je již velkolepým stavením, jemuž se podivuje celý hudební svět.

Vrcholu slávy dostoupil Křížkovský v roce 1863, kdy se slavilo tisícileté výročí příchodu Cyrila a Metoděje na Velkou Moravu. Přípravy k těmto oslavám se děly po několik let. Křížkovskému byl svěřen čestný úkol, aby sloužil píseň pro poutníky, kteří měli na

Velehrad ze všech končin staré vlasti a dalších slovanských zemí putovat k hlavním oslavám.

Kdo nezná majestátní hudbu k nadšeným slovům Soukupovým: ,,Ejhle svatý Velehrad už září!"?

Nápěv, který ve staré vlasti rychle znárodněl an z ducha národního je vzat, nápěv, který podnes a vždy znovu rozněcovati bude plamen vlastenecké lásky ke staré vlasti a jejím slovanským apoštolům.

(Začátek tohoto hymnu byl později zpíván takto: Ejhle oltář Hospodinův září.")

Křížkovského druhý čestný úkol byl ten, že jako sbormistr ,,Besedy brněnské" řídil na velké nábožensko - národní slavnosti v Brně 25. a 26. srpna 1863 svůj krásný chvalozpěv na apoštoly Slovanů Cyrila a Metoděje. Do Brna se tehdy sjelo víc jak 50,000 účastníků a též se dostavili skoro všichni vynikající muži a vůdcové národa. Hlavní koncert se konal pod širým nebem v Brně -- Lužánkách za účasti nejméně 15,000 nadšených posluchačů. Jeden z účastníků o tom vypravoval: ,,Když spustilo 1,100 zpěváků doprovázených plechovou harmonií chvalozpěvcyrilometodějský: Hvězdy dvě z východu ... všechno obecenstvo bylo uchváceno nejhlubšími dojmy.

Velebnost pěveckého sboru unášela mysl každého v jiné světy a když pěvecké sbory zapěly: ,,Zlomte svodnou osnovu těchto nectných okovů," nebylo lze ubrániti se slzám pohnutí. Ovace skladateli činěné lze přirovnati jen vychřici zachvátivší obecenstvo. To pleskalo, dupalo, křičelo, mávalo šátky a Frant.

Palacký, slavný historik a politik, osobně vzdal čest a chválu skladateli Pavlu Křížkovskému.

Ohromné toto dílo provedené za všeobecného nabožensko-vlasteckého zápalu vzpružilo vlastence po celé naší staré vlasti k další neoblomné ač mnohdy strastiplné činnosti. ,,Strastiplné" je tu proto míněno poněvadž vlastenectví bylo v tak zvaných vyšších kružích nerado viděno a pronásledováno. I do tiché cely v augustiniánském klášteře na Starém Brně zasáhly stíny těch veřejných chmur, a pod záminkou, že

život klášterní se neshoduje s obsáhlou veřejnou činností byl Křížkovský donucen ke skutku jež hlodal do smrti v jeho nitru -- že vzdal se koncem roku 1863 činnosti v ,,brněnské Besedě." Byl sice požádán slavnou deputací, aby artistické řízení Besedy nadále podržel, avšak mohl jen slíbiti, zě bude ji dál podporovati; do výboru se však zvoliti už nedal a sbory již neřídil. Také nedostál čestnému vyzvání, aby pro pražské Národní divadlo složil národní operu.

V podobné situaci jak Křížkovský byl bývalý profesor brněnské university Frant. Matouš Klácel (1808-1882). Tento vlastenec, rovněž člen augustiniánského řádu, byl vysvěcen na kněze v roce 1833, deset let před příchodem Křížkovského na universitní studia do Brna. Klácel po svém vysvěcení působil nejdřív jako klášterní knihovník a pak od roku 1835 přednášel filosofii. Jeho názory byly velmi ovlivňovány filosofií G.W .F. Hegela, proto se záhy dostal do konfliktu s cirkevními představenými a byl v roce 1844 zbaven profesury. F .M. Klácel pak odešel do Prahy a potom do Liběchova, kde se stal vychovatelem.

Litoměřický biskup se však postaral, aby nebezpečný hegelovec byl opět izolován za klášterními zdmi v Brně.

V revolučním roce 1848 se Klácel horlivě účastnil -- podobně jako Křížkovský -- národně politického dění. Matouš Klácel byl navíc zvolen členem Národního výboru a byl organizátorem Slovanského sjezdu.

Proti germanizačním snahám brněnského biskupa Schaffgotsche založil Národní jednotu sv. Cyrila a Metoděje jako středisko české politické práce na Moravě. V té době byl též redaktorem Týdeníku jejž vydával jeho přítel Jan Ohéřal a Moravských novin, které vycházely v letech 1848 až 52. K uskutečňování svých ideálů o lepší společnosti založil Klácel roku 1850 Českomoravské bratrstvo, jehož členy se stali také významný lékař Jan Helcelet, vlastenecký filosof Ignác Jan Hanuš a po něm byla získána i Božena Němcová, autorka nesmrtelné Babičky. Toto bratrství bohužel nemělo dlouhý život. V době utužování reakce byl Klácel nucen vrátit se opět do kláštera (od roku 1853) a působil přitom jako vychovatel (do roku 1869). Potom se vystěhoval do Ameriky, kde se snažil pokračovat v tom co mu bylo ve staré vlasti znemožněno. Tu v Americe nejdříve redigoval Slovana amerikánského v Racine, Wisconsin; jiné časopisy redigoval v Chicagu.

Ke konci života byl vychovatelem v Belle Plaine ve státě Iowa, kde také 17.března 1882 zemřel.

1863 zastavili němečtí představení v Brně jeho sekulární hudební činnost.

Vlastenec Křížkovský však přes všechny zloby svých nepřátel zůstal příznivcem brněnské Besedy svými dalšími, více méně naboženskými, skladbami. Roku 1866 věnoval jí ,,Pastýře a poutníky" (obsah je pouť na moravský sv. Hostýn) a přepracovaný ,,Výprask," a pak nový sbor ,,Zahrada Boží" roku 1867. V roce 1868 pak Křížkovský složil ,.Sbor pohřební" k pohřbu velikého moravského vlastence a nároního buditele Františka Sušila.

Vůdčí a tvůrčí duch tohoto moravskoslezského skladatele, nemohoucího k vůli svému církevnímu povolání pokračovat na cestě jím objevené, ponechal ji svým následovníkům -- Smetanovi, Dvořákovi, Martinů či Janáčkovi sám pak hledal cestu jinou. Bylo zcela přirozeno, že zabývaje se hudbou církevní z povinnosti, stržen byl mocným proudem, jejž se dral do staré vlasti z Bavorska a oblíbiv si zásady na opravu církevní hudby, plnou silou svého ducha je začal prováděti jak na klášterním kůře tak i jinde.
