SPJST Flag Day observance to include essay contest The United States Flag celebrates its 217th birthday on June 14. For the more than 10 million members of 97 fraternal benefit societies of the National Fraternal Congress of America, it also marks the culmination of national Fraternal Week, June 8-14.

Flag Day observances are a high point of National Fraternal Week. To promote the patriotic spirit of the SPJST, we 4 will sponsor a Flag Day Essay Contest.

The contest is open to Essay members ages 14 through 18. Essays will range from a 150 to 300 words.

The winning essay will receive a prize of $100, be read at the Home Office Flag Ceremony on June 14, 1994 and be published in the Vestnik. The winner from the previous year's contest must skip one

year in order to compete again.

The essay must be postmarked no later than June 3 and received by the Home Office by June 6, 1994.

Youth contestants must select a topic from one of the following: 1. "What is Our \ Responsibility to Our Flag?"

2. "What the American Flag Means to Me." A Flag Day Ceremony will be held at SPJST Home ay the Office in Temple on Contest June 14, 1994 at 9 a.m.

The members and the public are invited to attend this ceremony.

Team-Winning Combinations Total Quality Management Throughout my adult life, I've had the pleasure of working for member-oriented organizations-a college alumni association, two cooperative banks and now-the SPJST. In each case, one of biggest challenges has always been how to "get members involved" and focused on achieving group objectives. A lot of businesses these days refer to this team-building process as "Total Quality Management," or TQM, for short.

Basically, TQM focuses on establishing teamwork throughout an organization.

The goal is total quality in both the services that a member receives and in the satisfaction received from providing the service.

Last week I had the chance to visit with our Supreme Lodge officers and discuss with them some of the practical applications of TQM throughout our fraternal society.

"The only way a business can hope to survive in this new environment is to become service oriented," states Secretary-Treasurer Lanita Anglin. And therein lies the challenge. "Everyone is different and everyone has a special set of circumstances. When we receive a call or a request from a member, we have an obligation to respond promptly and courteously," Sister Anglin explains.

"Sometimes they just want to be reassured that their money is safe. And that's understandable. It is a comforting thought knowing that your SPJST annuity or mortgage loan in being handled by people you know and can trust."

Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas elaborated, "People want-and expect-to receive superior service these days.

"There's a lot more competition out there than, let's say, a generation ago.

What passed as customer service twenty years ago won't cut it today," he said.

"Just talking about it, though, doesn't get the job done," said Vice President Leonard Mikeska. "It's an ongoing process that we are constantly reviewing and working to improve. As the business of managing our Society becomes more complex, the amount of training and knowledge needed to make a productive contribution continues to increase."

The Insurance Department's QuickStart program and its support for sales representatives pursuing their Fraternal Insurance Counselor (FIC) credentials demonstrate a commitment to delivering top-drawer customer service.

"Those are just two examples. A commitment to Total Quality Management means building 'partnerships' throughout the organization-here in the Home Office and in our active lodges," Brother Mikeska explains. "Essentially it means paying more attention to the human dimension."

Regular meetings are central to the idea of Total Quality Management. In that respect, our active lodges are already on the fight track. The whole idea behind

meeting is to establish a regular time for planning, organizing, goal-setting, problem-solving and decision making. Active participation by all members is encouraged-and expected. In a fraternal setting, these regular meetings are also a great opportunity for communicating, bonding and building team spirit.

So what's the catch?

No catch, really-however, strong leadership is essential. Strong leadership establishes the environment for open discussion and keeps the entire process on the high road.

As Legal Advisor Sidney Kacir explains, sound leadership is crucial to the process of TQM. "Key elements of leadership include the ability to lead by example and to apply the rules of the game fairly and impartially.

"For it to achieve maximum potential, the concept of Total Quality Management requires that multiple lines of communication be open at all times and that all topics be fair game for discussion."

When diverse groups of people are allowed to do what comes naturally, the results, very often, are miscommunication, a lack of cohesion and stress. Misunderstandings based on different values sometimes lead to conflict. That's the bad news-it's also the good news. When the leadership handles conflict constructively, opposing opinions are discussed openly. Such an airing of ideas can lead to creative, innovative approaches.

"Just because you disagree with someone, that doesn't mean you don't share the same fundamental values," said President Howard Leshikar. "It's a natural and healthy aspect of a group working together to achieve a common goal."

Viewed in this positive light, team members are more likely to be open about their opinions and with their ideas. By encouraging group members to express their concerns during the discussion stage of a process, it is possible to develop alternate solutions. Also, by allowing members to discuss their differences as soon as they surface, negative emotions they feel in connection with the situation at hand are more likely to be put to rest. When people keep their differences bottled upalong with their negative emotions growing from squelched opinions, their resentments tend to fester and grow. And, as I am sure we have all seen, when people harbor such resentments, they tend to block the process of cooperation. In essence, the entire process becomes contrary to the concept of fraternalism.

What can any of us do to ensure a constructive approach to lodge business and affairs of the Society? The main ingredients that one needs up front are "clear and elevating goals"-something to shoot for.

With the newly aligned SPJST Home Office management team in place, many new windows of opportunity are ready to be opened ...

"In a fraternal setting, regular meetings are a great opportunity for bonding, and building team spirit."

From the Finance Committee Finance Committee Presents Minutes of April 16 Meeting at Home Office The Finance Committee met at the SPJST Home Office on April 16, 1994 as authorized by Article 25 of the By-Laws.

Chairman Monta Foster, District VII, called the meeting to order at 9 a.m.

Committee members present were: Ernest Wentrcek, Vice Chairman, District I; Arleen Mayeux, District II; Al Kercho, District III; Herman D. Weise, District IV; Alvin J. Sefcik; District V; and Secretary, Rita Vanek, District VI. The agenda for the day was reviewed.

Officers of the Supreme Lodge, Howard Leshikar, President; Leonard Mikeska, Vice President; Jerry Mikulas, Financial Secretary; Brian Vanicek, Editor; Sidney Kacir, Legal Advisor; Sid Pokladnik, Chairman of the Board, and members of the Publication Committee were to be interviewed.

Jerry Mikulas, Financial Secretary, gave us very useful information as we reviewed the financial statement. Jerry explained how he arrives at the totals on the statement. After a question and answer session was held with Brother Jerry, the members on the committee felt the officers and employees of the society are commended on a job well done. 1993 was a good year.

Sid Pokladnik, Chairman of the Board, gave the committee information on the board meetings. He stated that the board meeting every two months was helpful and that two of these meetings will be jam sessions exchanging ideas and goals for the good of the society. Brother Sid stated that there were several good applications reviewed by the Board for the position of Secretary-Treasurer. This being a very important position to fill, the board felt they needed more time.

Applications for the position were extended for future reviews by the board.

Howard Leshikar, President, stated that business at the Home Office was doing well. More money is needed for the Czech language courses. Several lodges were unable to hold classes for lack of funds last year. It was suggested that several lodges might consider joining together for the classes and a small fee be charged to help cover expenses. Brother Howard stated that the annual allocation for the Youth Department camp for 1994

and 1995 be discussed by the committee.

Leonard Mikeska, Vice President, gave the committee information on the real estate loans and the investments.

Brother Leonard stated that he will serve on the investment committee and therefore will work with the newly appointed officer.

Brian Vanicek, Editor, stated that things were going well, but believed that there was still considerable room for improvement with the publication and overall communications within the society. Brian discussed several areas of the Vestnik that could be improved with additional input from the various segments of the society. Committee members feel that Brian has improved the Vestnik, and encourage the members of the society to cooperate with him by sending in articles, pictures and information on members to be printed in the Vestnik.

Sidney Kacir, Legal Advisor, gave the committee information on the real estate financing and several other items of importance.

The Publication Committee held a joint meeting with the Finance Committee to make recommendations on the salary of the Editor. The Publication Committee feels that the Vestnik has improved and that Brother Vanicek has some very good ideas for the future.

Brother Mikulas was asked to return to the meeting to discuss the present retirement and pension plan of the officers, employees and the retirees.

With information gained by interviewing the officers, Editor and Legal Advisor, and other information on hand, the committee felt that an adjustment of salaries and other recommendations were in order. Other recommendations were discussed and voted on by the committee members. These recommendations will be submitted to the Supreme Lodge Board of Directors for further approval.

A complaint on the counting of the ballots was brought to the attention of the committee. The members of the Finance Committee voted to have at least one representative of the Finance Committee present when the ballots are opened and votes counted by the accounting 'firm.

The Finance Committee meeting adjourned Saturday evening at 8 p.m.

Brother Mikeska and Brother Kacir stayed with Chairman Foster and Secretary Vanek to help draw up the ballot to be sent to the delegates and the recommendations to be sent to the Supreme Lodge.

The Members of the Finance Committee appreciate the time the officers gave and for giving up a beautiful Saturday. The information they had prepared helped to clear many questions and made our decisions easier.

Recommendations to the Supreme Lodge by the Finance Committee are: Referendum: The recommended salaries, which represent approximately a four per cent increase for the Supreme Lodge Officers, Directors, Editor and Legal Advisor are based on cost of living, increased work load caused by annuities and loan refinancing, improved internal communications, the annual profitability of the Society and their overall performance under adverse economic conditions.

As a matter of information, the Finance Committee is also supporting the recommendation of the Publication Committee for employee assistance for the Editor.

The Ballots are to be mailed in an enclosed Ballot envelope addressed to the accounting firm of Brockway, Chupik, Niemeier, P.C. The ballots must be postmarked no later than May 11 1994 to be counted.

At least one representative of the Finance Committee will be present when the Ballots are opened and votes are counted by the accounting firm. No Officer, Director, Editor or Legal Advisor will be present or see the Ballots. The accounting firm will destroy the Ballots within ten days after the Ballots are counted and will maintain strict security over the ballots until the ballots are destroyed.

The Finance Committee recommended the sum of $3,000 per year for lodgesponsored school classes teaching the Czech language, with the authority to disburse and administer the funds by the Supreme Lodge. Effective Immediately.

The Finance Committee recommended the Youth Department's annual allocation for 1994 be $50,000 and the annual allocation for 1995 be $52,000.

These funds are to be used as provided on page 58 of the proceedings exclusively for the youth. All funds are to be accounted for and audited by the District Audit Committee, and a report given at the District Spring Meeting. The audit (income and expenses) must be filed with the Supreme Lodge President within 30 days after the audit. The District Youth

Counselor and the District Audit Committee must see that this report is filed. Any unused revenue is to be placed in the District Youth Fund.

The Finance Committee recommended the following changes: 1. That retired officers who attend special District or State functions be paid mileage and meal tickets as per allowance rate set by the 1992 convention.

2. Bonus, if any, for staff members be set by the Supreme Lodge.

3. That the Supreme Lodge study the defined benefit retirement plan, and have figures for the Finance Committee for their 1995 annual meeting for review of options for possible alternative retirement plans.

4. The Finance Committee supports the recommendation of the Publication Committee to provide for employee assistance to the Editor.

The Finance Committee recommended the following changes to the Retirement Plan: 1. In response to newly effective IRS nondiscrimination requirements, the Finance Committee recommends the future discontinuance of employee contributions effective January 1, 1995.

2. In order to increase payment option flexibility, the committee recommends an optional lump sum form of payment to be made available to future early retirement and normal retirement retirees. Such an option is not expected to add long term cost to the plan given proposed legislation on interest rates used to determine actuarial equivalence and the elimination of any future ad hoc COLA costs on retiree benefits that are paid out in lump sum.

3. The Committee recommends that retirement benefits, payable to employees who defer actual retirement beyond the date that they first become eligible for "unreduced" early retirement or normal retirement, be adjusted as necessary to be actuarially equivalent to benefits that were payable at such prior early or normal retirement dates.

4. The Committee recommends a 3 percent ad hoc cost of living adjustment to retirees in payment status January 1, 1993. This is to be effective January 1, 1994. This would be consistent with prior adjustments made to the plan.

Letters from the Lodges Lodge 1, Fayetteville Reports on April Directors Meeting The Fayetteville SPJST Lodge No. 1 Board of Directors met on Thursday, April 28, 1994 at the SPJST hall.

President Polansky discussed recent repairs made to the red storage building on the SPJST grounds and the cost was split by the Chamber of Commerce and the lodge. He also reported that the lodge continues to be in good financial condition after the cost of repairs and insurance. The cost to replace picnic tables and benches was discussed and Polansky said that he has asked for a bid to build them of metal instead of concrete with hopes that these would not be destroyed.

He has also contacted Judge Fred Ross to get minor offenders to paint the red storage building.

President Polansky advised the Board that high school graduate, Kristen Drymalla, a member of Lodge No. 1, was a winner of the 1994 SPJST Scholarship from the Supreme Lodge. He mentioned that more students need to join the lodge to take advantage of this wonderful gift.

The next lodge meeting will be the annual joint picnic with the Czech Heritage Society scheduled for July 17 at Polansky's Lake at Rek Hill. Members are asked to bring a covered dish and dessert. Everything else will be provided.

6, Cottonwood Reports on May Meeting

Lodge

Our meeting was held on May 1, 1994 at 1 p.m. The meeting was called to order by President Johnny Krizan. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by the Youth Club. The minutes were read and approved.

We had 17 members present. One member, Ruth Krizan, was recognized as having a birthday in May. The $10 door prize was won by Cyril Svrcek.

The $10 progressive door prize was won by Richard Veselka (not present).

After the meeting, all of the fathers prepared the meal for all of the mothers.

It was really delicious.

Fourteen of us went to visit the museurn in Temple. It was enjoyed by all who made the trip.

Our next meeting will be on June 5.

Four Director Doing Well After Surgery District

District Four Director Stanley Broz checked in with the Home Office last week to report that he is resting comfortably and on the recovery trail following an operation last week in San Angelo. We expect to see him back out and about soon.

Expression of Sympathy The SPJST Supreme Lodge and Home Office Staff extends heartfelt sympathy and condolences to State Field Manager Gene McBride and his family on the death of his mother, Mittie McBride of Ennis on Sunday, May 15.

Lodge 24, Cyclone to Honor 50-Year Members June 12th Dear Members and Readers, First, a great big "Thank You" to all the wonderful folks who turned out for our Mother's Day Barbecue on May 8th.

Thanks to you, we had our best turn out ever. We hope you enjoyed the meal.

Special thanks to all of the lodge members who volunteered their time Saturday and Sunday to prepare, barbecue, cook and serve the meal and to the many members who donated food and baked goods.

Finally, thanks to all of our friends with area radio stations and newspapers who helped us get the word out about the barbecue. It was great.

Lodge members met for their regular monthly meeting on Monday, May 9 at 7 p.m. Lodge President Carol Chervenka called the meeting to order and all officers were present except for Secretary Arleen Mayeux. Following the Pledge of Allegiance, a moment of silence was observed in memory of departed Lodge 24 members, including Sister Ella Bedrich, who had passed away since our last meeting.

Due to the absence of Secretary Mayeux, the minutes of the previous meeting were not read. Standing Committee reports were delivered by the chairmen. All reports looked good. In her report, Youth Leader Melanie Zavodny stated that the youth club was also doing well and that their recent fundraising efforts, including an April 16th bake sale and candy bar sale, generated good profits. Vice President and FAC Louise Zavodny also reviewed upcoming lodge bookings and dances.

Under new business, members discussed the special June meeting during which we will honor our 50-year pin recipients. The meeting will be on Sunday, June 12 and will start at 2 p.m.

After the program there will be a brief business meeting followed by a "svanna," or mid-afternoon meal. The lodge will provide the meat dish and members are asked to bring covered side dishes and/or desserts. If you haven't been to a meeting in a while, plan to make this one and help us show our appreciation to the longtime members of Lodge 24.

In other new business, lodge members voted to loan tables and chairs to the Four Season's Nursing Home in Temple for one of their upcoming projects.

Lodge members celebrating birthdays during the month of May included Louise Zavodny, Carol Chervenka, Bernice Sebek, Wilbert Mikeska, Ashley Veselka, Jimmy Baker and Emily Psencik. Happy Birthday to all of these members and others who may have had a birthday.

The meeting adjourned at 8:45 p.m. and was followed by refreshments.

Again, Lodge 24 members, please make plans to be in attendance at the June 12 meeting during which time we will honor or 1994 50-year members.

Dear Members, Picnic time is almost here. Sunday, June 5 is right around the corner. As always, many donations are needed. We need sweets for the sweet booth and cakes are needed to serve as desserts for the meal. We also need items for the country store and, of course, the auction which is a major part of the picnic. So, please keep the picnic on your minds.

Everyone's help is always appreciated.

As everyone knows, the day before the picnic is a day of getting booths set up, food prepared and everything else that needs to be done in order to get ready for the picnic. So, please come and help if you can. Thank you.

Lodge 47, Seaton Getting Ready for June 5 Picnic Dear Brothers and Sisters, The annual lodge picnic is just around the corner. The date is Sunday, June 5, 1995 at Seaton Star Hall.

We are asking members for pastries, bread, cakes, pies and cookies for the sweets booth, sheet cakes for the dessert on the barbecue plates, items for the country store and, also, for the auction.

Items for the auction may be newly purchased, or better yet, antique. This is our once-a-year fund raiser; therefore we need the support of all of our local lodge members.

The picnic begins at 11 a.m. with the selling of barbecue beef or chicken plates with all of the trimmings to be consumed at the hall or taken out. Also the sweets booth will open at 11 a.m. with coffee available to drink with the kolaches.

The games will begin at 1 p.m. The Youth Club will be manning their games, including ring-a-cake, dunking booth, country store and the teddy bear stand, face paintings, fish pond, etc. with the help of their parents.

Afternoon music will be provided by two bands: Charles Mikeska's Band and Charlie's Swingmasters, starting at 2 p.m. until the auction, which starts at 5 p.m.

They will be playing a variety of music for your listening pleasure.

Cash bingo will be played from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. The auction will continue from 5 p.m. until all of the items are sold.

A beautiful handmade quilt and shams as well as other prizes will be awarded at approximately 8 p.m. Plenty of drinks and eats will be available all day. Please make plans to be there and lend your supPort.

49, Rowena Reports on May Meeting

Dear Members, The meeting was called to order on May 4 at 7:40 p.m. by President Elizabeth Walther. She led us in the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a moment of silence for the departed members. Secretary Nancy Schwertner gave the roll call then read the minutes of the last meeting.

President Walther reported on the recent kolache sales that several ladies of the lodge held as a money-making project.

This May is 90 years since Lodge 49 has been organized. We will have a celebration on August 14 for all members and their families to celebrate the special occasion.

Youth Leader Nancy Schwertner gave her report on the upcoming youth activities.

President Walther reported on the District Four Spring Meeting that was held at Lodge 49 on April 17. She also reported on upcoming events which will be held at Lodge 49.

The Fifth Annual Tarok Tournament will be held at Lodge 49, Rowena, on May 14.

54, West Reports on March Quarterly Meeting Lodge

The first quarterly meeting of Lodge 54, West was called to order by President John Emery on March 4. President Emery led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, after which tribute was paid to our dear departed members, Frank W. Kellner, Jr., who died on November 20, 1993, Irene F. Guthrie, who died on December 19, 1993 and Edwin Volcik, who died on March 3, 1994. May they rest in eternal peace.

Secretary Anne Emery read the minutes of the November 5, 1993 meeting which were approved as read. She also read the following items of correspondence: A letter from President Leshikar naming the following members who receive their 50-year pins this year: Robert Busby, Leona Kral, Alfred Krkoska, Edmund Marek Robert Prasifka, Willie Mae Pustejovsky and Leona Taylor.

A letter from President Leshikar advising us that we had achieved Honor Mention in the Incentive Awards Program. Sales Representative Freddie Kaluza will attend the ceremony and accept the certificate and check for the lodge.

Financial Secretary Maxine Sefcik gave her report which was accepted as read. We welcomed four new youth members, namely Britt D. Beshear, Arielle E. Harris, and Amanda L. Mach.

These were signed up by Sales Representative Freddie Kaluza and Lucas T. Sefcik, who was signed up by Lydia Maresh. Welcome, also to two new adult members who were signed up by SR Freddie Kaluza, Cindy Marie Grones and Linda Joyce Kaluza. We are happy to welcome these new members to our lodge. Lodge 80, Holland Member Wins Science Fair Congratulations to Sarah Crotty, a second grader at St. Mary's Catholic School in Temple, Texas. Sarah recently won First Place in her class at the recent St. Mary's Annual Science Fair. Her project, entitled "Growing Mold" showed how mold can form on various types of foods and explained some of the many uses of mold.

Sarah, her parents, Mike and Lori Crotty, and brother, Jacob, are members of Lodge 80, Holland.

Grandparents are D.I. and Marie Bohac, also members of Lodge 80.

Treasurer Freddie Kaluza gave his report which was accepted as read. A round of applause was given to Freddie for being a member of the Team Members' Circle. We really do appreciate his hard work in acquiring new members for our lodge.

President Emery thanked all members for helping our Lodge achieve our goal in attaining Honorable Mention in the Local Lodge Incentive Awards Program. He especially thanked Sales Representative Freddie Kaluza for acquiring the required number of new members that qualified us for this award.

The next meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday night, June 3. A social and dinner will be held on Sunday, June 5 at Lone Star Hall honoring our 50-year members. The social will begin at 4 p.m. and the dinner will t served at 5 p.m.

We encourage all of our members who possibly can to attend this function in honor of our 50-year members. The lodge will furnish the refreshments and food for the dinner and the officers are requested to bring desserts.

The meeting was adjourned by President Emery. Randi Jo Vrba drew for the door prize. The winner was Anne Emery. Everyone enjoyed refreshments, food and fellowship after the meeting.

Let us not forget our next meeting on Friday night, June 3 at Lone Star Hall at 7 p.m. We need more participation from our members at these business meetings.

Lodge matters that affect all members are discussed at these meetings and we need more input from our members. If you are not in attendance at the meetings, we cannot incorporate your suggestions and ideas, therefore leaving major lodge decisions up to a very few members in attendance.

Dear Members, Our lodge meeting had a good attendance as well as a visitor, Brother Keith Gatewood, who is our State Sales Representative as well as the president of Lodge 66, Waco. It was also nice to see Sister Linda, Sister Stacy and Brother Chris Coker in attendance.

Sister Salac read the minutes as well as a correspondence for the Tax Department and Appraisals of the City of Dallas and a letter from Brother Gatewood. President Justine Yeager received a letter of thanks from "People to People," the young ambassadors program, for the Beseda Dance Group that entertained that evening.

Reports of Committees Sunshine Committee—Sister Bessie Tydlaska reported that a get well card had been sent Sister Annie Petr and that sympathy cards had been sent to Emil and Mildred Slovak and Katherine Tabisz.

The House Committee had no report.

The hall rental report was given by Emil Petr.

The Special Committee report was given by Sister Evelyn Salac. She reported on money collected by the kitchen during hall rentals. If you would be available to help on occasion, please give her a call at 352-5295 and offer to do so.

Youth Leader Bessie Petr reported that the youth will have their meeting and ice cream social next Sunday. The teens will be meeting on Friday, May 27. Sister Bessie reported that one teen from our lodge would be attending camp as an LIT (Leader in Training).

The Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Council will be meeting at Lodge No. 84 on June 13 for its picnic. Sister Petr reported that at the last meeting, a donation was sent to the Lancaster Relief Fund and that Lodge 84 will be responsible for desserts at the picnic.

Sister Petr also reported that the Czech Culture Society would be meeting on June 27 at Sokol.

Band Hiring: Brother Richard Andreason is working on the dance schedule.

FAC Faye Rejcek is still receiving money for dues. If you have not sent yours in, will you?

Brother Keith Gatewood gave a short talk to the members, encouraging everyone- to help our sales representatives to achieve the goals set for our lodge. Do you know anyone who you would enjoy seeing as a member of Lodge No. 84?

SPJST Lodge 87 held their meeting on May 11, 1994 at 7 p.m.President Navratil called the meeting to order with Flag Bearer Lad Zatopek leading members in the Pledge of Allegiance. We stood in silent tribute to deceased members—especially Frank Matush, Jr. and Henry Chupik.

Vice President Reisner gave his report and he and President Navratil read correspondence from the Supreme Lodge.

Jennifer Hrachovy is the recipient of a SPJST Scholarship. Congratulations.

Refreshments were brought by the Navratils. All mothers present were honored.

92, Fort Worth Reports on Lodge and Member Activities Lodge

Dear Members and Friends, There is no need to write about the weather as it will do as the good Lord wants. I only hope that these storms do not injure many people. It seems like this is happening all over the state. Today is May 16 and the sun is shining.

Our May 15 meeting was well attended but there is always room for plenty more. Everything went very well with regards to the reports of officers and committees.

The committee planning the June 19th Gold Achievement Awards Appreciation celebration is working well together to organize this occasion. It looks like there will be a nice program. Since this will also be Father's Day, we hope the families come out to celebrate that day as the food will be catered by the famous Riskey's catering service. The food will be very good. We ask the ladies if they could please bring a pastry to go with the meal. There will be a small charge of $5 per adult and $3 per child. We would like this to be like one big family dinner for members and guests. The dinner starts at 12 noon and will continue until 2 p.m.

There will be food available later— Gordon Hubenak's hamburgers. We hope that for this occasion, some guests will want to join our SPJST family.

At our May 15 meeting, we honored our mothers and those who have been like mothers to their relatives. A small gift was given to all of the ladies who were present—not because they were mothers, but because they were helping to honor their mothers.

The lodge tables seem bare now since can no longer use paper table cloths. This is due to the fire code law in Lake Worth; however, if you have a wedding or a celebration planned and are planning to use fireproof cotton cloths, that is permissible.

The Ladies Circle asked if they could buy some cotton tablecloths for their use and also for use at the meetings. Maybe this will be permitted. It seems like each day, some kind of new law is passed that makes life more miserable. Wish it could be as it was in the old days.

Brother Kercho spoke on getting things in order for our Heritage Day that will be held in September. Things look to be falling into place, so Brother Kercho and his committee appears to be doing a fine job.

Our sunshine person, Jo Prochaska, keeps busy mailing birthday cards to

members over age 65. She also sends cards of sympathy to the families of deceased members and to those who are ill.

Our manager, Joyce and Frankie Tesar, prepared a good meal that was enjoyed by all. The pastries that the good ladies brought were delicious as always.

On the sick list are Joe Botik of Lubbock, Texas, Mildred Knopik and Teresa Donohugue. It was good to have Frank Tesar at the meeting. Hang in there, Frank, you are doing good.

We congratulate our members who are graduating this year: Steven McLendon, son of Norma and Bill McLendon, and grandson of Justine Chaloupka. Steven will be graduating from North Texas State University; Whitney Chaloupka, daughter of John and Paula Chaloupka.

Whitney is graduating from L.D. Bell High School; John E. Paprskar, son of John and Joy Paprskar, is graduating from L.D. Bell High School.

Our Brother Joe Paprskar was surprised as his son, Jimmie, and wife brought a large birthday cake for him with 85 candles on it. All sang "Happy Birthday" to him. Afterwards, everyone who had birthdays in May stood as "Happy Birthday" was sung.

I sure want to congratulate our guide, wonderful Mary Cecilia Krivanek. She participated in a recital at the Tarrant Junior College on May 1, 1994. She is a wonderful singer. Mary Cecilia, we are proud of you.

It was a surprise to see Albert Kubala's left hand bandaged. He claims that he hit it with a hammer. Do you believe that? His thumb is broken so I am glad it is his left and not right as he is my partner in horseshoe pitching.

Summer is coming so stay well and enjoy your vacations. By the way, we are inviting the editor and his family as well as the director of District Three and Supreme Lodge .Officers and their families to come be with us on June 19.

Remember, the dinner is $5, but the program and the dance will be free. We invite all members and friends from here and out of town to also attend.

Our May meeting was well attended.

President Keith Shinn opened the meeting at 7:30 p.m. and accepted all reports as they were presented.

Beseda Director Martha Vrla discussed several invitations that she had received for the Texas Czech Beseda Dancers to perform: • Old City Park Frontier Adventure Days, June 11 at 1 p.m.

• San Antonio Folklife Festival, August 5, 6, 7.

8/VkSTNIK—Wednesday, May 25, 1994 • Westfest, September 3, dancing the Moravian Beseda in the Cultural Arts Building.

Aiso, Beseda practice will commence on May 20th at the Vrla's house and each weekend thereafter. Dancers will be notified of location.

The Fraternal Council's annual Flag Day Picnic will be held on Monday, June 13 at Lodge 84. Members are asked to bring desserts.

The date of the mediation regarding the lawsuit between Lodge 130 and Sokol Zizka is May 24th. The Lawsuit Committee stated that the mediation should result in the culmination of the disagreement between the lodges and in their disassociation.

Our next meeting will be on June 20th at Lodge 84. Anyone interested in the outcome of the mediation should plan on attending this meeting.

Dear SPJST Members, As everyone knows, the SPJST Society is a fraternal life insurance business and its foremost objective is to sell insurance. By all reports, we seem to be doing well.

With the insurance sales, we also stress fraternalism. Many years ago, our parents enjoyed the lodge meetings and activities as a gathering place for companionship and the receive the latest news in their community.

Today, we continue with this same fraternalism that was displayed many years ago. We are also a benevolent and chari-

table organization.

177, Academy Reports on May Meeting

Dear Members, Our regular monthly meeting was called to order on May 11th by President Otis Beck. The members stood and recited the Pledge of Allegiance. The roll call of officers was made and all were present.

The minutes of the April meeting were read by Secretary Kathy Fritz and were approved as read. Correspondence was read from Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar that two of our members received a $500 scholarship from the Supreme Lodge. They are Jana Driska

177, Academy Members Enjoy Dining and Dancing Fun Lodge

In recognition of Mother's Day and Father's Day, members of SPJST Lodge 177, Academy met Friday, May 13th at Frank's Lakeview Inn, overlooking Lake Belton for an enjoyable evening of dining and dancing. (See accompanying photos.) Due to the afternoon of stormy weather, there were some who were unable to attend. While we were enjoying a wonderful meal, we watched the beautiful sunset on the lake.

Afterwards, everyone enjoyed the evening listening and dancing to the music of Firecreek. Everyone had a very enjoyable evening socializing. This occasion was made possible with the money received from the Gold Star Incentive Award —Submitted by Linda Johnson —SPJST-

Louis Driska, representing Lodge 177, presents a $500 SPJST Supreme Lodge Scholarship to Jana Driska, a 1994 honor graduate of Rosebud-Lott High School. She is the daughter of Ken and Jenette Driska and the granddaughter of Louis Driska and the late Jean Driska and Helen Hoelscher. The presentation was made at the Rosebud-Lott High School Awards Ceremony on May 12, 1994.

Our lodge received certificates from Rogers High School and Academy High School for our donations to the Project Celebration for the Senior Class. A thank you card from each school was also received.

All chairperson's reports were given and approved. Janet Lyon, FAC, was absent. Otis Beck read announcements of upcoming events. May birthdays recognized were Kathy Fritz and Ruby Harris. Linda and Mike Wagner celebrated their anniversary. Libbie Bartek reported that a get well card was sent to Robert Tomastik.

Kathy Fritz reported to the membership that Lanita Anglin, an employee at the Home Office for more than 14 years, had been appointed to fill the office of Secretary-Treasurer. We wished her the best.

Door prizes were awarded to Barbara Wright, Bobby Fritz and Linda Wagner.

SPJST Lodge 177, Academy supports their community and surrounding areas and we were proud to have the Gold Star Award picture and write up appear on the front page of the Rogers Affiliated Press.

186, Caldwell Offers Class in Conversational Czech Lodge

Come and join us as we maintain our Czech heritage. Lessons begin May 31, 1994 at 7 p.m. and will continue every Tuesday and Thursday for four weeks, from 7 until 9 p.m. at the SPJST Hall in Caldwell, Texas. Cost will be $10 per student. Children ages 10 and under may take the class free when accompanied by a paying adult.

The class will be structured for both beginners and advanced students.

Our instructor will be Tadius Polasek of Moravia, Texas.

The class will be limited to 30 adults.

Circle of Czech Women Report on May Meeting Dallas

Our May meeting was called to order

by President Bertha Podhraska. Vicki Kohn recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

Bertha welcomed 22 members and five male guests.

Correspondence was read by Evelyn Trojacek, including a "thank you" card from the Martha Malooly Family; a "thank you" card from the St. Monica Church for the donation in memory of Martha Malooly; and a "thank you" card from Lillian Moran for the cards and telephone calls.

A "Happy Easter" card was received from the Ladies Circle of Corpus Christi.

We enjoy reading the news of The Circle of Corpus Christi written by Anna Marie Moss and hope she continues to keep up the good work.

A card from Esther Cunningham from California was also read.

A letter from Sarah Brightwell Chrystine Westbrook, Alina Stewart and Ashley Todd, students from Caddo Mills Middle School, was read. The students wanted information on how the Czech Republic is recovering. Bertha will ask Jitka Hynecek to send the information.

Reunions Seaton School Reunion May 29 The Seaton School Reunion will be held on Sunday, May 29, 1994 at the lunch room, beginning at 10:30 a.m. The noon meal will be served at 12:30 p.m. with the food brought for your family members. Plates, cups, bread, tea and coffee will be provided.

A short business meeting will follow and a full afternoon of remembering your school days, seeing the teachers, trustees, cafeteria workers and fellow students will follow.

Dear Members and Friends, Our meeting was called to order by our president, Jo Prochaska.

She made welcome our 36 members and extended a special welcome to Mollie Walker. She had been out for two months after her 100th birthday party with pneumonia. Mollie thanked everyone for all the get well wishes and gifts.

She then led us in the pledge to our flag.

The minutes were read by Secretary Merel Kovar and the good treasurer's report by Lydia Alholm were approved as read.

A thank you was read from Frank Tesar and we were happy to have him back after his hospital stay. We just heard that Ruby Jones was ill. She is in our thoughts and prayers. We have been missing Elma Anderson who is taking care of her daughter, Roberta Peters (our member) who is gravely ill and she is also remembered in our thoughts and prayers.

Our Sunshine Chairman reported on all of the cards sent. She has be kept busy and is doing a great job.

There was a discussion about eating out. Harold Balvan and Annie Whitsill will check on several places and give us a report at our next meeting on June 1 at 10:30 a.m.

Dear Youth Members, Our monthly meeting was held on May 8 at the Hallettsville Garden Center.

We enjoyed having our DYC Marcy Dorotik visit us. She discussed our LIT Workshop and our camp which will be held the weekend of June 17 at Camp Lone Star in La Grange. We also discussed the District YAD. She handed out information all of this.

9, Snook Youth Club Reports on May Meeting Lodge

Dear Readers, Our monthly meeting was held on May 4 at 6:30 p.m. Susan Skrabanek talked to us about Y.A.D. and our trip to the Schlitterbaun. We had door prizes and my sister and I each won something.

Our next meeting will be June 1 at 6:30 p.m. at the Fire Department to work on our float.

I'd also like to thank Mrs. Ann and Mrs. Susan for helping us make the sunflower hats. I gave mine to my grandma and she really liked it.

Skrabanek - Marek Family Reunion The Skrabanek - Marek Family Reunion will be held on June 11, 1994 at the Seaton School Lunch Room, beginning at 10 a.m. A buffet style lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m.

Each family is asked to bring side dishes and dessserts. Meat will be provided. Plates, napkins, utensils, tea and coffee will also be provided.

Youth Leader Melanie Zavodny reported on Youth Achievement Day and camp. Special dates were: L.I.T. Camp (June 3-5); LIT pre-camp meeting in Taylor (June 16); YAD (July 10); Junior Camp (July 23-26) and Teen Camp (July 26-29). We ask all members to try to complete and turn in their YAD and camp forms as soon as possible!

Congratulations to our new 1994-95 officers who will be installed at the June meeting. 49, Rowena Youth Club Meets for May Meeting

Lodge

Our May meeting was held on May 1 at our youth leader's house. This was a special meeting with District Youth Counselor Sandra Jansa. She sent out letters to all area youth who belong to Lodge 49. We wanted to try and get some new members but nobody showed up. She reported on some upcoming events.

President Brad Schwertner reported on the bake sale that we had on April 17 at the District Spring Meeting that was held at our local lodge.

We presented a program at the Spring meeting and some youth members from Lodge 160, San Angelo also were in it. It sure was a lot of fun and the audience seemed to enjoy it.

We filled out our April and May project forms. We will host the District Y.A.D. on July 16. Our next meeting will be later in May to elect new officers.

Jarred Eixman is six years old and attends kindergarten at Rogers Elementary School. His parents are Stuart and Mary Eixman. He also has a sister named Alison.

Jarred's hobbies include baseball, rock collecting, swimming, skating, riding ATVs, jumping on the0 trampoline, watching TV and movies.

He is also a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and plays in the Rogers Little League T-Ball.

Sara Stidham is six years old.

She is the daughter of Cindy Stidham. She became a member of the Robstown Lodge 117 Youth Club on November 11, 1993.

She has two risers, Krista, age five; and Jennifer, age two.

Sara likes to go to movies, swimming, and playing with her sisters.

She is a first grader at Tulosco Midway Elementary School.

66, Waco Youth Club Reports on May Meeting Lodge

On May 15, 1994, we had our youth meeting. The meeting was called to order by President Jesika Tierce. The Pledge of Allegiance was said by Candice McAdams. The past meeting's minutes were read and approved.

We had 18 members and five adults in attendance. Guests were Dabonna Pack and Charles Trickett, Jr. Unfinished business was that Dana needs YAD cards to be returned to her by May 27th. The hall will be open for practices on May 22nd and 28th as well as June 5th and 12th. Camp forms are due in by June 26th.

New business was that we will be meeting on June 5 at Linden Hall to make Father's Day crafts for the Moody Nursing Home. Be sure to bring construction paper, glue, scissors, and stickers that show guns or fishing gear.

We all signed a get well card to send to Libbie Parma. We hope that she is feeling better.

Another reminder, District YAD is June 26th at Lodge 25, Ennis.

Today we honored all mothers and ladies with a potpourri bag. The May birthday cake was brought by Thomas Honey and the game by Jodie McAdams.

Jesika Tierce will bring the cake next month and Sherrie Pruitt will bring the game. Door prize winners were: First Place - Dillon Lock; and Second Place Kevin Galler. The meeting ended at 2:30 p.m. The next meeting will be June 19th.

LIT Workshop June 3 - 5 at Camp Lone Star The SPJST LIT Workshop, especially for active youth club members 14 - 17 will be held June 3 - 5 at Camp Lone Star in La Grange. Activities begin at 6 p.m. Please note that no supper will be served Friday evening.

Those attending will be trained to serve as an LIT (Leader in Training) at camp this summer.

Those attending are encouraged to bring the following personal articles: sheets (twin), blanket, pillow, wash cloth, towels, flashlight, bathing suit, tennis shoes (no open toe shoes), blue jeans, comfortable clothes, your favorite musical cassette, money for the Trading Post, white pillowcase, and a fan (optional). All sleeping cabins are air-conditioned.

The announcement was made that Jennifer Herna was be the Floresville Peanut Festival Queen for 1995. She will be the 50th queen. Congratulations, Jennifer. We are all very proud of you.

We decided to each donate $1 to the SPJST Rest Home in Needville for their piano. Our club will match every dollar we receive.

The District youth trip will be to Sha World on June 8, 1994. We are to meet in front of Sea World at 9:30. Hope to see everyone there.

A case is the form which shows, the function of a noun, adjective, or pronoun, in the sentence, and its relation to other words in the sentence. There are seven such cases in the Czech language.

1. NOMINATIVE, or subject case: prvni pad— answers the questions: KDO— who? (is the doer of, or subjected to, some action?); CO— what? (lifeless object or event is something said about?)

Ex.: KDO tam chodi? Karel tam jde.

Here Karel is in the nom. case. Co se tam deje? Schilze se tam kona. Here

schfize is in the nom. case.

GENITIVE Case— druhST pad, has a function similar to the English possessive case, (my friend's house, or the house of my friend). The genitive has acquired a wide range of meaning besides the basic sense of BELONGING. It answers the questions: Ceho? of what?, ti? whose?

Ex.: Z eeho je to vfrabene Ze 2eleza a z litiny. 6 je to pueik? Je to pueik meho otce. (Otce, here is in the gen. case).

DATIVE Case— fret' pad, is primarily a case of direction marking end or result towards which an act proceeds. It is therefore used after the verbs GIVING, SENDING, SAYING, or WRITING something to someone.

It answers the questions KOMU?, to whom?, and EMU?, to what?

Ex.: Komu pigeg? Pigu domu tatinkovi. (Tatinkovi here is in the dative case). Cemu poslouchag Posloucham vysilaci stanici. (Stanici is in the dative case).

4. ACCUSATIVE, or Direct object case— etvrtSr pad; marks the receiver of the action or the thing acted upon by the subject. It answers the questions: KOHO? whom?, and CO what?

Ex.: Koho's tam videl? Vida jsem tam maw pritele. (pfitele is in the acc. case).

Co tam vidig? Vidim moji matku. (matku is in the acc. case) 5. VOCATIVE Case— NIS, pad— is used for addressing or calling to a person or a thing.
