Sara's Story Shows What We Can Do Self-Help Helps Us All In the Lodge Letters Section of this week's Vestnik, Jerry Dressler, of Lodge 172, Pasadena, relates the story of elevenyear-old Sara Michalsky, and her triumphant fight for life. It's a touching story about the capacity that human beings have to endure, to go on on, to live and to succeed. Like Brother Dressler, our hearts go out to the little ones like Sara, children whose pint-sized frames have been ravaged by the effects of illness and suffering. In a fraternal sense, we view them as members of our great extended family-the family of man.

A couple of years ago, Life magazine reported on a study on families and family values. In one of their survey questions, Americans were asked for their definition of the family.

The results were surprising. Only 22 percent considered a family to. be "a group of people related by blood, marriage or adoption." The definition preferred by 74 percent was much broader. A family, the majority felt, was "a group of people who love and care for one another," but who were not necessarily related to one another.

That second definition of family sounds a lot like the "fraternal bonding" that can grow out of a positive lodge experience. In many instances, our fraternal brothers and sisters help to provide us with a sense of our own past and with a sense of belonging.

As a fraternal benefit society, the SPJST embodies the concept of people working together to improve their lot. By harnessing the great advantages and potential of the lodge system, we can do much more than we have to date. We have the real special difference of fraternalism -in addition to all of the advantages of life insurance.

The self-help nature of the SPJST provides members with the opportunity to determine the destiny of their lodgeoften with far-ranging impact on the community-all of which brings us back to Brother Dressler's story about Sara and Lodge 172's role in her convalescence and recovery .. . It's a story that so clearly illustrates the heart of what SPJST is all about-people helping people.

We live in an era when the volunteer movement again appears to be gaining both respect and admiration; when communities-both large and small-need structured volunteer groups to effectively confront community challenges. In times like these, local lodges are challenged to stand up and begin a new march into a better future that will not simple "happen." It will happen because each of us works to make it happen. ***

Mortgages Lending: For Your Benefit It's not often that I reference the SPJST Mortgage Lending Department in this column. In fact, the last time was back in November of last year. It's something I should do more often. As I stated then, home and farm mortgages are "two of the most unheralded member benefits" offered by the SPJST to its members. In addition to offering very competitive interest rates, an SPJST mortgage provided the peace of mind knowing who you will be dealing with through the life of your mortgage.

In order to be considered for a mortgage loan with the SPJST, you or your spouse must have been a member of the SPJST for at least 90 days.

Underwriting guidelines stipulate that the SPJST may lend up to 75 percent of the purchase price or appraised value, whichever is less, on "first-class residential real estate." For example, if the land and dwelling are appraised at $100,000, the maximum amount that can be financed is $75,000. Likewise, each immediate family is subject to a maximum financing limitation of $100,000.

The Spring Meeting was called to order on Sunday, March 13, 1994 by District President Arleen Mayeux at Lodge 47, Seaton. Members were led in the Pledge of Allegiance by District Two flag bearers.

Ruth Hanusch then led the members in the singing of the National Anthem.

Ruth Hanusch, Second Vice President, held a memorial for deceased members of District Two. Frank Klinkovsky, President of Lodge 47, Seaton, welcomed all to the meeting and thanked each for attending.

Motion was made and seconded to approve the minutes as written. Motion carried.

Kathy Fritz, Treasurer, recognized the donations for the Spring meeting from lodges No. 18, Elgin; No. 187, Round

Kathy Fritz recognized the 96-year old, 75- and 50-year members of the district.

District Two Director Willie Kohutek gave a brief report and recognized the top sales representatives. Congratulations was extended to lodges in our district that received recognition at the Incentive Banquet on Saturday, March 12.

Wednesday, May 11, 1994—VESTNIK/5 Brother Kohutek then introduced Jerry Mikulas from the Supreme Lodge. Jerry discussed the incentive banquet and officers' workshop. He thanked Lodge 47, Seaton and Lodge 24, Cyclone for a job well done on the banquet and workshop.

Brother Mikulas then presented Treasurer Kathy Fritz with several checks for the district fund.

Brother Dan Balusek gave a report on the rest homes and the latest improvements going on. Needville Rest Home is needing a new piano.

Sister Mayeux recognized the Fraternalists of the Year from District II. Lodges in attendance at the meeting were as follows:

Audit Report was given and all books were in good order. Albin Machu, Frank Pajestka and Lad Zatopek served on the audit committee.

Brian Vanicek gave a brief report on the Vestnik. He commented that the last 21 months have been a challenging and a satisfying experience. He reported that the Publication Committee will be meeting on Saturday, April 16th at the Home Office.

Motion was made and seconded that District Two hold their Spring Meeting on the third Sunday of March and their Fall Meeting on the third Sunday of September. This would not be changed at any time. Motion carried.

Motion was made and seconded that Lodge 80, Holland would host the Fall Meeting on Sunday, September 18.

23, Moravia Members Participate in "Trash-Off" Day Lodge

32, Victoria Reports on April Meeting

Dear Members, Lodge 32 met at Citizens National Bank on April 13th. Our guest speaker was Bob Lothringer, brokerage and investment representative from CNB. We all enjoyed his presentation and thank Adolf Motal, our FAC, for arranging the program.

The District Six Spring Meeting in El Campo - Hillje was well attended and an overall success. The meeting went very smoothly and the youth put on a great talent show. And, last, but not least, the cooks in that part of the country are excellent! Thanks for putting together a great meeting. We also enjoyed having Brothers Sidney Kacir and Brian Vanicek in attendance. It's always nice to have someone from the Home Office in our midst and we appreciated them taking a Sunday afternoon to be with us.

Stay tuned for details of an upcoming cook-out at DuPont Park ... It was such a success last year that we decided to do it again ... Don't miss it!

Dear Readers, The April meeting of Lodge 47, Seaton was held on Sunday, April 10.

This meeting was in honor of our 50- and 75-year members and our 96-year-old member.

President Frank Klinkovsky called the meeting to order at 2 p.m. After the presentation of the flags, he spoke briefly about Mr. Bernie Gebala, who passed away on March 8. He read a poem written by Ruth Hanusch and we remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of Bernie.

President Klinkovsky welcomed everyone to the meeting, especially all of the the visitors. Many were family members of our honorees. One, in particular, Mr. Harvey Polivka, came from Wisconsin with his wife, who was a 50year member.

After going through the regular business meeting, we went right into the presentation of pins to our members.

President Klinkovsky asked Delores Skrabanek and Ruth Hanusch to escort the honorees to their place at the head table. He introduced District Two Director Willie Kohutek. Director Kohutek spoke briefly before presenting the pins. He complimented the 1993 officers and sales representatives of Seaton Star Hall for a job well done in the 1993 Incentive Program. He also stated that they are asking all lodges to keep July 10, 11, and 12th open in 1997. The SPJST Society will be celebrating its 100th anniversary at this time.

Director Kohutek then gave a brief history, comparing Society assets in 1944 and 1994. He then presented the pins.

Wallace Jez escorted his mother, Bessie Jez, and she received her 75-year pin.

Tracy Stewart, our age 96 member, was escorted by her sister-in-law, Helen Mikulastik, and she received her certificate of endowment.

Vice President Edwin Pechal presented all honorees with Seaton Star Hall coffee mugs. Judy Pechal made three beautiful cakes for the occasion. Janelle Novosad and Judy Pechal decorated the tables for the honorees and also made corsages and boutineers for the special members. We are very lucky to have members like Judy and Janelle. They have such a talent for doing things like this. They could take a simple room and turn it into something special in no time.

A big thank you to them both.

After the meeting, President Klinkovsky asked everyone—adults and youth—to meet outside in front of the hall for a group picture. Brian Vanicek, editor of the Vestnik, was on hand for the picture taking. Thank you, Brian.

The blessing for the meal was then given by Dan Balusek and a covered dish meal was enjoyed by all of the members.

The Youth Club also had their Easter egg hunt in the afternoon.

Our May meeting was held on May 1.

Just an early reminder. Due to our lodge picnic being the first Sunday in June, which is June 5, our June meeting will be on Tuesday night, June 7th at 7 p.m. We will have a covered dish meal in honor of our seniors, Lori Greger and Laura Gibson.

Lodge 47, Seaton Choral Group to Sing May 17 Dear Brothers and Sisters, We met on Tuesday, April 26 at 7:30 p.m. at Seaton Star Hall. The eight members present each selected their favorite selection for our group to sing. We voted to go sing at the Four Seasons Nursing Center on Tuesday, May 17 at 7:30 p.m.

We are hoping more will be available to come to sing that night. It helps to entertain these residents who do not get to go anywhere and are isolated at the center.

80, Holland Invites All to Annual Picnic This Sunday, May 15 Lodge

Dear Members, The May meeting as called to order by President Harold Rohde at 2 p.m. n Sunday, May 1st. The Pledge of Allegiance was said and a moment of silence for departed members was observed.

Secretary-Treasurer glen Latham stated that all officers were present and he read the minutes of the April meeting.

Brother Glen also gave all reports turned in to him. Reports showed that all were doing fine.

The Catherine Coker family sent a thank you to the lodge as did the Holland Womens' Auxiliary.

New members included Calvin and Doris Eckerman, Larry and Cynthia Pajestka, Kyla and Joshua Arnold, Jeff Ludwick and Janine Posey. We welcome you all into the lodge. Mr. and Mrs. Eckerman, thank you for attending your first meeting!

Lodge 88, Houston Member Crowned Prince of Houston Diaper Derby Congratulations to Zachary Burke who was recently crowned "Prince" in the Houston Baby Pageant and Diaper Derby. He placed second in the seven-eight month boys division among 3,500 babies who competed.

The pageant took place on February 20, 1994 at the Medallion Hotel in Houston, Texas. Zachary and his mother, Wynell Hannes-Burke are members of Lodge 88, Houston.

Ann Ivicic was recognized for winning an SPJST scholarship. This young lady has been active in the lodge since her birth. She spent many nights sleeping at the hall before she was a year old! She has taken orders in the kitchen and worked the picnics. Congratulations, Ann! We know you will represent SPJST well in college.

Chester Shmoldas of Lodge 74, Lovelady

My Life as an SPJST Sales Representative (Editor's Note: The following story is told by Chester Shmoldas, reviewing his life as a productive sales representative for SPJST.) I guess one of the main reasons we organized Lodge 74 was to provide a good environment for both young and old to have entertainment.

In 1957, I was approached by officers of the SPJST Chester Shmoldas Supreme Lodge to become a sales representative. They convinced me that I could sell insurance in my spare time even though I was busy building brooder houses and taking care of my farm. They said any spare time I could donate to insurance sales would be appreciated.

My first experience in sales was later that same year when I approached a man

concerning insurance on his daughter. He wanted an "educational plan" and at that time, SPJST was marketing the Juvenile Endowment at age 18 plan. The father purchased two certificates for his children. After the first premium, the father moved and left no forwarding address.

Needless to say, at that time I was ready to turn in my rate book. My first experience was a bad experience.

Then, in 1971, the District Two organizer visited with me and again explained all of the benefits that SPJST had to offer its members. He told me that if I would sell insurance to 100 members, the Supreme Lodge would loan money to build a new lodge hall. After some deliberating and realizing that our area needed an entertainment center for both young and old, I decided to contact my prospects and inform them of plans to build a lodge facility in the area.

In the meantime, I met a gentleman— by accident, actually—Mr. Rudy Hafner.

While I was waiting in the lobby at the doctor's office, I introduced myself to

someone and told that individual that I was of Czech descent. A lady overheard my conversation and said she knew of an individual in Crockett who was also Czech and his name was Rudy Hafner.

Later that day, I called Rudy. When Rudy answered, I spoke in Czech and he replied in Czech. Rudy and I talked about SPJST and he offered his assistance to me to build the lodge.

With the help of Rudy, the lodge was built and it prospered for many years. In the 1980s, Rudy moved from the area, leaving behind many friends who appreciated the work that he did for the community.

The dream of having a pleasant environment for the community to have entertainment was, of course, realized. In fact,

we have game nights on both Thursday and Saturday nights starting at 7 p.m. and no alcoholic beverages are allowed.

In closing, I feel that it is time for someone to take my place as a sales representative. My health is deteriorating and I've had several setbacks in the last few months.

Lodge 74, however, is doing well thanks to the wonderful hardworking members we have such as Winward and Joyce Bradshaw, Ralph and Hazel Smith, Joyce Rains, Elaine Erwin, and several outside helpers.

Her bowling partners, Irene Ferguson, Pat Robinson and Sheila Collins—known as the Pin Busters— surprised the Keller resident with a party at Watauga Lanes during their regular Tuesday morning bowling time, in which 12 four-member teams compete.

"She's a great little lady," said Robinson, who helped plan the party.

"She has a wonderful sense of humor."

Praslicka takes care of her own yard and still drives, Ferguson said. "When she doesn't come to bowl, it's usually her car that breaks down, and not her," she said.

Members of Praslicka's former Richland Bowl team, the Gutter Bus, who attended were Reba Cuttey and

Trudee Young of Richland Hills and Sue Allen of Granbury.

Praslicka, a widow who began bowling in the early 1960s at Fort Worth's Cowtown Bowl, does not consistently bowl in the 150s like she used to, but sometimes the old fire returns. In August, she bowled two games over 200, said her daughter-in-law, Theretta Praslicka. Theretta and Frank Praslicka live next door to his mother, on several acres northeast of Keller.

The Fort Worth Womens Bowling Association named Ella Praslicka the Golden Age Bowler of the Year last fall, Theretta Praslicka said.

Gertrude Spotanski, sales director at Watauga Landes, met Ella Praslicka in 1970 at Richland Bowl. "She's one of the dearest, sweetest ladies I've ever known," Spotanski said.

Lodge No. 133, San Antonio did not hold a meeting in April in an effort to encourage members to attend the District Seven Meeting held in New Braunfels on April 24th. We would like to thank those members who were able to attend the district meeting. Our lodge was well represented.

Our next regular meeting will be held at 2 p.m. on May 15th at St. Margaret Mary's Activity Center. Sandwiches will be provided by the lodge. Members are asked to bring snacks and desserts.

139, Danbury Reports April Barbecue Big Success Lodge

The Lodge 139 members' barbecue on April 16 was a big success with 160 in attendance enjoying the fellowship with one another. Everyone enjoyed the delicious barbecue with all the trimmings catered by Staff of El Campo. A table, heavily laden with a wide variety of delectable desserts provided by lodge members, was popular with one and all.

The program consisted of Lodge 139 Vice President Monte Baldwin reading a list of all of our members who had passed away in the past year. Everyone stood for a period of silence in memory of our departed brothers and sisters.

President Lostak announced three members who had attained fifty years of SPJST membership this year. These are Sister Lillie Krampota, Brother Richard Krampota, and Brother Raymond Macek.

Unfortunately, none of them were able to be present. Those attending members who have been in the SPJST over fifty years were asked to stand and be recognized.

Sister Helen Fillip tickled everyone's funny bone with her reading of "All Those Born Before 1944." It certainly brought home all of the changes which have occurred in the past fifty years.

Sister Ora Faye Wilson gave a reading on "The Joys of Aging."

Throughout the day, drawings were held for door prizes. Those winning $5 each were Joe David Walker, Jaline Baldwin, Lynda Wiley, Charlie Krenek, Pat Vrazel, Josephine Buri, Harold Peltier, and Glen Ryan. Winners of the SPJST camps were Robert Kieschnick, Patsy Johnson, Ray Trebeck, J.L. Lucas, Larry Pflughaupt, and Tommie Lostak.

Miscellaneous other prizes were won by Vincent Hechler, Lorine Wiley, Dorothy Pflughaupt, Katherine Swahr, Barbara Fillipp, Emily Kadera and Jeanie Heiman.

Special thanks were given to Rhonda Baldwin and Janice Little for printing the invitations and reply cards.

The regular monthly Lodge 139 meeting on April 12 was largely devoted to the final plans for the barbecue with a social following the meeting.

Lodge 148, Blessing Reports on April Meeting Dear Members and Friends, In our January Lodge meeting, officers were voted in. 172, Pasadena Shares Joy in Child's Recovery

Dear Members, This week, I picked up a copy of the Deer Park Broadcaster and the headline read "Michalsky Makes Medical History with Recovery."

Sara Michalsky, age 11, spent 82 days in the Texas Children's Hospital in Houston. She had endured a stroke and the effects of an aneurysm on her brain.

On September 24, she had another problem. Her subclavian artery, which was malformed and wrapped around her esophagus, ruptured, blowing a hole through the esophagus. This was only the eleventh recorded case in history of this type of medical problem. Sara was the first to survive.

Hospital records indicate that Sara required 160 units of blood. At one time during her ordeal, her mother was notified that she was gone and only the machines were keeping her alive. She later developed an infection in her blood stream and had to spend another 30 days in the hospital getting rid of that problem.

Finally, she was sent home and slowly began to recover.

After Christmas, she returned to school for a half day, followed by therapy in the afternoon. Gradually, Sara regained her health and she now attends school all day.

It is amazing to see how well Sara has been able to recover. She has the energy to keep up with the others in her class and

is looking forward to the day that she will be on the school drill team.

Last summer, Lodge No. 172 in Pasadena donated the use of our home for a benefit for Sara which helped to defray the cost of her many medical bills. We, at Lodge 172, wish Sara a complete and healthy recovery and feel that we, in some small way, were helpful. This is one of the things that the SPJST is about!

On our next work party day, May 2 and 3, we will remove all of the old wax from our dance floor and then rewax and buff. This will take two days due to the large size of the floor.

The Gulf Coast Czech Festival Committee has met and made preliminary plans for this occasion on the 22nd and 23rd of October. More details later as they materialize.

I want to request again that any member who is a dues paying lodge member and will graduate this year, to please contact one of the lodge officers.

Lodge No. 172, Pasadena held their April meeting on the 27th at 7:30 p.m.

President Alvin Sefcik welcomed members and guests in both Czech and English.

Jerry Dressler led the Pledge of Allegiance and everyone remained standing in memory of our deceased members and also in memory of President Richard Nixon.

Correspondence received was read by the Recording Secretary Jo Mayfield and Vice President Robert Mayfield. A donation was made to SPJST Rest Home No. 2 on the piano. A donation was also made to the Boy Scouts of America.

The minutes of our last monthly and Executive Meeting were read and corrected.

All reports by the officers and committees were read and were very encouraging. A new riding lawn mower has been approved to be purchased. A new typewriter was also approved for office use.

The sick list showed Clarence Fee had his knee operated on and that Louise Duncan was in the hospital for surgery.

We hope to see them back at our activities at the lodge soon.

Czech classes have ended at our lodge for this session and everyone is hoping for another class this fall.

Approximately 35 people from age 10 to 85 attended this seven week course and all are looking forward to another session.

Even though Czech is the third most spoken language in Texas at this time, if we don't continue to have Czech classes, 20 years from now, no one will use this beautiful mother tongue. I have taken several classes in the past but I derived more Czech in this class than all of the others. Thanks to Sister Lillie Mae Peter for spearheading this class.

Door prizes were won by Emilie Sefcik, Arnold Sefcik, Agnes Valusek, Eric Zucher and Belinda Watkins.

Brother Whatley was born to Joseph Charles and Lola Hill Whatley in Leedale. A Rogers area resident most of his life, he married Elsie Norwood on November 21, 1961, and was a beekeeper and leader of J.C. Whatley and The Rhythm Kings. He was a member of the Federal Musicians Association, SPJST Lodge 80 and the Texas Beekeepers Association.

Survivors are his wife, Elsie Whatley of Rogers; three sons, Joe Whatley of Rogers, Calvin Whatley of Belton, and Billy Priest of Heidenheimer; three brothers, T.C. (Muggs) Whatley of Rogers, and Mack Whatley and Billy Bob Whatley, both of Temple; a sister, Louise Underwood of Little River - Academy; and five grandchildren.

Services were on Tuesday, May 3, 1994 in Sheffield Funeral Home in Rogers with the Rev. Lain Teel officiating. Burial was in Reed's Lake Cemetery.

Funeral services for Edgar Beyer, Sr., 71, of Midfield, were held on Wednesday, April 20. He passed away from an illness on April 17, 1994. Services were held at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Blessing, Texas with the Rev. Peter Higgins officiating. Burial followed at St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery.

Mr. Beyer was born on August 29, 1922 in Weimer to Charles R. Beyer and Rosalie J. Ripper Beyer. He lived in Midfield for 67 years and was a retired farmer, member of St. Peters Catholic Church, and served as a board member.

A veteran of World War II, he received a Purple Heart while serving in the U.S. Army.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Janie A. Lejsal Beyer, sons and daughterin-laws, Edgar C. and Connie Beyer of Danevang, Gary and Glynda of La Ward, James and Diane Beyer of Markham and David and Samantha Beyer of Comanche; three daughters, Rose Edwards of Markham, Theresa and Randy Strack of Danevang, and Donna Beyer of Blessing; two sisters; eight grandsons; and six granddaughters.

Family Reunion The Sixth Reunion of descendants of Fred Pechacek will be held on Sunday, July 17, 1994 at the St. Joseph CCD Building in Elk. Registration begins at 10 a.m. and a memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. for those family members who have passed away since our last reunion in July 1992. A short business meeting will be held.

47, Seaton Youth Club Reports on April Meeting Lodge

Dear Readers, The April meeting of the Lodge 47 Youth Club was held on Sunday, April 10. The meeting was called to order at 2:15 p.m. by President E.J. Pechal.

Joshua Smith led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag and the club motto.

The register was read. There were 23 members, three adults and two visitors present. The minutes from the previous meeting were read and approved. Kristen Klecka gave the treasurer's report and balance.

Youth Leader Ginger Greger reported on the May Fete. Several practice meetings for the May 7 May Fete were scheduled. Other May Fetes will be held at Taylor, Elgin and Round Rock.

Ginger also said that there will be an LIT camp meeting on June 16.

Our lodge picnic will be here before we know it. It is scheduled for Sunday, June 5th. The Youth Club will have several booths at the picnic. Chairpersons and booths are as follows:

Lodge 28 Youth Club Member Honored at District Six Spring Meeting District Six DYC Marcy Dorotik recognizes Jessica Kelner, Lodge 28, East Bernard Youth Club member, for being the overall winner in the 1994 SPJST Tee-Shirt Contest Design Contest. 88, Houston Youth Club Reports on April Meeting Lodge

Dear Members and Readers, President Corey Gray called the meeting to order at 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday, April 20. We had 30 members and nine adults present. We were reminded of the upcoming deadline to order Camp Tshirts. The form and money is due to State Youth Director Joni Lange no later than than May 4. All camp, LIT and LIT questionnaire forms are due by Sunday, May 15 to Mrs. Linney. Mrs. Stayton, DYC, will have a LIT and parents meeting on Monday, May 16, at 7 p.m. in the youth room. LIT candidates must attend this meeting with their parents. The LIT candidates will leave for Camp Lone Star at 12 noon on Friday, June 3 and return home the afternoon of Sunday, June 5.

The following Saturday, June 11, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. will be the LIT workshop at Lodge 88. Parents are welcome to join in the instructions.

The youth voted and again this year

we will sell Gold C Books. Last year we sold 100 books. The proceeds are put into the general account of the Youth Club and added to the money we make from our weekly kitchen sales at bingo.

It was brought to our attention that there are several elderly people who are no longer able to pay their membership dues because of a hardship. Mrs. Linney asked if the Youth Club would like to make a donation to pay their dues—or part of the elderly members dues. Some of these members are now in nursing homes and are unable to attend lodge functions but would like to continue their membership. The matter was discussed at length and a member of the youth club will be responsible for getting a list of people who could be considered. It will be discussed in an upcoming meeting when all of the information is gathered.

Mrs. Zalesky, assistant youth leader, has set Thursday, May 5 at 7 p.m. for our next craft meeting. She has a Mother's Day craft ready for us to make.

Mrs. Bender, assistant youth leader, reminded everyone it is that time of year again. We need to start thinking what we would like to do for Youth Achievement Day Talent and what crafts we might like to do. We will have a meeting on Tuesday, April 26 at 7:30 p.m. in the youth room. We will discuss all options open for talent. A sign up sheet was passed around for the youth to sign. The response was good.

Also, YAD cards were available after the meeting and the deadline is May 27th for them to be returned to Mrs. Linney.

Our next monthly meeting will be May 18 at 6:30 p.m. in the dining room Jason Michalek will be bringing the drinks. Hope to see you there.
