A Tale of Two Cultures

Early Czech settlers attracted to Ge a settlements in Texas By W.J. "Bill" Malina (88) PART TWO The German settlements of Cat Springs, New Bremen, and New Ulm soon became destinations for Czech and Moravian immigrants. From these settlements, the Czech and Moravian pioneers migrated to other Anglo-German settlements or areas. Fayetteville soon became a Czech town. By 1880, Fayette County had several Czech or Moravian settlements near German towns. The settlements of Mulberry (later renamed Praha), Navidad (renamed Dubina), and Bluff (renamed Hostyr) near the towns of Schulenburg and Weimar are typical examples of the attraction that German communities had for Czech settlers. The process was repeated in communities like Vsetin and St. Mary's near Hallettsville, and small communities near Shiner in Lavaca County. Brenham, in Washington County, also attracted many Czech settlers.

The winning teams were as follows: First Place Team Robert J. Cervenka and Robert E. Cervenka (father and son) of Lodge 66, Waco Second Place Team Weldon Galler and Michael Galler (father and son) of Lodge 66, Waco

The first known Protestant minister of Czech ancestry who came to Texas had a German name—Rev. Joseph Bergman. Before coming to Texas, Rev. Bergman was the pastor of a Protestant Czech church in Prussian Silesia. While in Texas, Rev. Bergman preached primarily to Swiss and German Evangelical Reformed Protestants. Bergman, through the letters he sent to friends in Bohemia, was responsible for many Czech Protestants deciding to come to Texas. The Unity of the Brethren, the Czech Protestant church in Texas, never grew large enough or affluent enough to establish a seminary of their own. When the Unity was being organized, the Rev.
