David Kucera of Corpus Christi takes top honors

Lodge 29, Taylor hosts State Tarok Tournament Lodge 29, Taylor, was the site of the Ninth Annual SPJST State Tarok Tournament on February 19. A total of 56 enthusiastic players representing 14 lodges and five districts participated in the games. After the first two games were completed, players enjoyed a delicious roast beef noon meal served by the members of Lodge 29, Taylor. Lodge members furnished a variety of desserts to go with the meal and an abundant supply of kolaches and pastries throughout the day. Thank you. The SPJST expresses its thanks to Lodge 29 officers and members for their gracious hospitality. Following the noon meal, four more games were played by everyone. The results were as follows: First Place—David Kucera Lodge No. 79, Corpus Christi Second Place—Henry Kubala Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth Third Place—Paul Schlesinger Lodge No. 29, Taylor Fourth Place—Joella Kubala Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth Fifth Place—Gene Kucera Lodge No. 79, Corpus Christi Sixth Place—Margie Hajda Lodge No. 20, Granger Seventh Place—Glen Paul Lodge No. 17, New Tabor Eighth Place—Elias Bigon Lodge No. 47, Seaton

The Fort Worth players came prepared to win the lodge trophy and had no problem. Lodge 92, Fort Worth fielded a total of 17 players in the competition. Their lodge, incidentally, has game nights twice each month and usually they have a tarok tournament of their own at each game night. After the tournament a discussion came up about awarding the lodge trophy in the future. It was suggested to go back to the old way of awarding the lodge trophy so that the smaller lodges would have the same opportunity to win as the larger lodges. The majority of those involved in the discussion agreed. In past tarok tournaments, the lodge trophy was also awarded to the first place tournament winner. Under the new rules, the team trophy goes to the lodge which accumulates the most points, based on tournament play. Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar spoke to the players and asked them to take the time to teach other members to play the game so that we would be able to get more members involved in tournament play and continue this Czech tradition. My sincere thanks to all who have taken the time to play and support this tournament. The fraternalism was enjoyed by the players and they are always looking forward to the next tournament.
