It's All About Better Service Strengthening the Ties That Bind Us Around this time of the year, there's a lot of talk about how important it is for you to attend your district's spring meeting. In fact, I often find myself saying it.

While there's nothing wrong with encouraging people to attend a meeting, there also needs to be a reason. If we really want and expect the members to show up then it is essential that we provide them with a good reason for attending.

Within the SPJST, the spring meeting concept was originally conceived as a way to provide the membership with an overview of the Society's performance during the previous year and to define the Society's course of direction for the coming year.

Even though the meeting format will vary from district to district, the objective remains the same-to provide the membership with "news they can use." An effective spring meeting can help to reestablish a sense of purpose and direction within a district. In the simplest terms, a good spring meeting creates a road map for the district's coming year, versus just letting things happen.

Assuming that all of what has just been said is accurate, a member has every reason to expect at least three basic areas of operations to be addressed at their spring district meeting: 1. Information and explanation of the previous year's financial and fraternal performance on a statewide and district level; 2. Information on management's operational business objectives and insights into the members roles in supporting these objectives; and 3. Information on existing and new SPJST insurance, lending, and fraternal programs and services.

Who, specifically, is responsible for relaying this information is of secondary importance. The main thing is that the real issues be addressed and that members be given the opportunity to ask questions about any items that they do not understand.

In addition to conducting the regular and essential business of the district, whoever coordinates the meeting may want to consider allotting some time for members to participate in group discussion. So many good discussion questions are often overlooked because we assume that everyone knows the answers or agrees on them. For example: • Why does the SPJST exist?

• What are its strengths?

• What are its weaknesses?

• What opportunities does it face?

• Where does the Society want to go?

• How can we get there?

The SPJST has an ever-changing set of business and fraternal issues, legal requirements, and challenges with which to contend. The very existence of our Society is directly related to the effectiveness of our membership in understanding and dealing with these topics.

Case in point: The 1992 SPJST Convention in Victoria was my first.

While the experience was enlightening, I left with the impression that we, as a Society, try to dispense of an extraordinary amount of important and complex business in a very short while. Having discussed this concern with others, I believe that there is much more information that we should be exchangingbetween conventions-to ensure that our membership stays well informed as to the business matters affecting the SPJST. Too often I have heard it expressed that the "average member" is not in position to make decisions that will affect the future of our Society.

If that is so, then let us work to bring everyone up to speed on matters of Society business. And what better place to start than at our annual spring district meetings?

None of what has just been said has been intended to cast doubt on the material status of the SPJST. Indeed, as the numbers will show when our officers make their annual reports in the Vestnik in two weeks, the SPJST is-in some ways-in better shape now than it has ever been. In fact, we're primed and ready to embark on the next phase of our Society's evolution. The whole point of this discussion is meant to focus on one thing-to build a more effective working relationship between all branches of SPJST membership and leadership. As in any relationship, the basis for cooperation, and mutual respect within our Society is an environment based on trust, common purpose and understanding. *** Quality Customer Relations To better serve its members, all SPJST Home Office employees and officers will have the opportunity this week to attend a short course sponsored by the Temple Chamber of Commerce on steps to achieving "Quality Customer Relations."

This is good for two reasons. First, it signifies a willingness on the part of the SPJST to embrace "customer service" and training as an important management tool. Second, it reinforces the idea that good customer service is a key to building repeat business.

The importance of "customer service" can not be overemphasized. It is so important to stay in close touch with our members and their changing circumstances. By not doing so, we enable other interests get in and provide the service that we are so capable of rendering. *** The Courage to Act Now "Give yourself the courage today to make the first step toward the things you have been talking for years about doing.

1994 Workshop to Focus on "Getting Members to Lodge Meetings" This year is the beginning of something new and exciting.

For the first time, the Annual Lodge Officers' Workshop will be followed by a special dinner recognizing local lodges and sales representatives for their achievements.

SPJST Lodge No. 47, Seaton will host the 1994 Lodge Workshop. SPJST Lodge No. 24, Cyclone—a close neighbor of Lodge 47, will host the Incentive Awards Dinner.

The theme of the workshop will be "Getting Members to Lodge Meetings."

The program will include representation from each district with success stories and the application of case study work in the afternoon.

The awards dinner will feature presentations, group award photos and guest humorist, Maurice Beckman, as speaker.

1993 and 1994 lodge officers and winning sales representatives are invited to the Incentive Awards , Dinner. They may bring a spouse or one guest.

Additional guests, members, or 1994 officers who did not serve in 1993 may purchase a ticket for the dinner for $9.95 each.

All lodge officers, sales representatives and any interested members are invited to come to the lodge workshop.

There is no charge and lunch will be served.

Brother Ben A. Jarma Named 1993 SPJST Fraternalist of the Year At their January meeting, the SPJST Supreme Lodge selected Brother Ben A. Jarma of Lodge 84, Dallas, as the Society's 1993 Fraternalist of the Year .

Brother Jarma, who has been a member of the SPJST for 46 years, has established a long track record of fraternal achievements within his lodge, District Three and the state. He held the position of lodge president for four years and served as vice president for nine years.

He served as Entertainment Committee chairman for 11 years and has been a member of the Entertainment Committee for more than 40 years. During that time, his responsibilities have been many and varied, including the hiring of bands and orchestras to perform at Lodge 84.

Brother Jarma has represented Lodge 84 as a delegate to the SPJST State Convention for the last ten conventions and has been an active sales representative for more than 40 years. For 37 of those years, he has represented District Three on the Insurance Committee.

In addition to his service to the SPJST, Brother Jarma has been elected as a delegate to the Czech Cultural Society for 20 years. He has served as treasurer and program coordinator of that organization and as a member of its Beverage Committee for nine years.

His community involvement is also well documented. Brother Jarma has served the Business Manager and coach of the Dallas Softball Managers Association (DSMA) and as coach and manger of the Lodge 84, Dallas softball team for 35 years. He also served as a YMCA coach for four years.

Other memberships and affiliations include membership in the K.J.T. Society and the Czech Club, the North Dallas Chamber of Commerce Baseball Advisory Council, St. Patrick's Catholic Church and Mens' Club. He is also a past member of the Southern Methodist University Quarterback Club A veteran of World War II, Brother Jarma served as Battery B Director for the 552nd AAA Association. During the war he participated in five major battles of the Normandy invasion. He currently writes articles for the Flak, a service bulletin for the 552nd.

For 35 years, Brother Jarma worked for the Sears Credit Union in Dallas as a buyer and as an indoor salesman for Watson Food Service. He is now retired.

Brother Jarma's fellow workers say that he demonstrates his love and commitment for his fellow man in each of the organizations that he has been associated.

The presentation of Brother Jarma's Fraternalist of the Year Award will be made at the Lodge Officers' Workshop on March 12, 1994 at Lodge 47, Seaton.

Congratulations to Brother Jarma , the four fraternalists who were selected as honorable mention recipients, and to all who were cited by their local lodges for their outstanding achievements.

FAC Presents Rule Changes for 1994 SPJST State Tournaments State

A change for 1994 will be made as to how the lodge trophy winners will be determined. In each contest, one lodge trophy will be awarded to the lodge with the highest total number of points or games of all players from a given lodge.

This should increase participation because the more players that you have from your lodge, the better chance you would have to win. No changes were made in the selection process for individual trophy winners.

In the 1994 tournaments, there will not be a limit as to how many players or teams can enter from any lodge. This will include taroks, straight dominoes or

"42" and the horseshoe tournaments. We encourage local lodges to have a practice night and decide on partners and to practice with that partner.

The only requirement will be that players must be SPJST members and they should register their name with the State FAC. Please discuss this at your meetings and pass this information on to other lodge members as we would like to see a full house at each tournament.

Make plans to be there and enjoy the day with us.

24, Cyclone Reports on February Meeting

The February meeting of Lodge 24, Cyclone was called to order on Monday, February 7 at 7 p.m. by President Carol Chervenka. All officers and trustees were in attendance.

A moment of silence was observed in memory of our deceased members.

Secretary Arleen Mayeux presented the minutes of the January meeting which were approved as read. She also noted that Lodge 24 will have 22 members that will be receiving their 50-year membership pins in 1994.

Reported on the sick list was Brother Ben Zabcik. We hope that he is doing better as of this writing. It was also reported that Sister Minnie Jurcak and Sister Regina Marek had passed away.

Our sympathies are extended to their families and friends. Likewise, condolences go out to the family of Brother Joe Baker, whose mother recently passed away.

Following the secretary's report, the various standing committee chairman delivered their reports. It was interesting to note that the youth dances, which are currently offered once a month by Lodge 24, are doing well, in terms of attendance and revenues generated.

In her report, Treasurer Margaret Mikeska reported that Lodge 24 had received its annual premium refund check from the Supreme Lodge. Sister Margaret also reported that she had received an invoice for the lodge's 1994 liquor liability payment.

In old business, Reporter Brian Vanicek that he had visited with the Bell County Tax Assessor's Office regarding the matter of having Lodge 24's property value reassessed. Based on the information he received, it looks like the lodge may be able to expect a decrease in property tax assessments in 1994.

In new business, members voted to contribute $50 to the East Bell County Boosters.

In other new business, members discussed plans for the upcoming Countywide Garage Sale to be hosted by

Lodge 24. Watch future issues of the the Vestnik for details as they become available.

Celebrating birthdays in February were Tracy Chervenka, Pam Mikeska, Bill Smetanka and Joan Vanicek. Happy birthday to these and all lodge members with birthdays in February.

Celebrating their wedding anniversary in February were Johnnie and Carol Chervenka. Congratulations to them and to all other lodge members with anniversaries in February.

Following the meeting, there was a drawing for two heart-shaped boxes of Valentine candy. Winners were Bernice Sebek and Carol Chervenka.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, The regular monthly meeting of Lodge 29 was held on Sunday, February 13th.

The meeting was called to order by President Melvin Steger. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and we stood for a moment of silence in memory of our deceased member, Leon Lefler. The minutes of the January meeting were approved as read.

These important dates were discussed: March 12, 1994—Officers' Workshop at Lodge 47, Seaton and Awards Dinner at Lodge 24, Cyclone.

March 13, 1994 —District Two Spring Meeting at Lodge 47, Seaton. Let's all try to come and represent Lodge 29.

We also discussed plans for our Mayfete. We will elect our queens at the next meeting which will be on March 6, 1994. All interested girls, please contact Elaine Machu or Donna Pasemann.

Our Super Bowl Party was a success and we discussed plans for next year's party.

We elected to have another New Year's Eve Dance. We also discussed plans for our Christmas Party.

The State Tarok Tournament will be held at our lodge on February 19th.

On March 18, 1994, we will be having a St. Patrick's Day Stew Supper. Serving time will be from 5 until 7 p.m.

Tickets will be only $3 each.

Desserts will be sold. I would like to encourage everyone to come out and support Lodge 29 for this event.

We have three new members that I would like to welcome, on behalf of Lodge 29. They are Bessie Haag, Ryan and Lindsey Leach. Please come and be a part of the SPJST Family.

There is a lot going on in the month of March and I encourage all of you to be a part of it.

6/VESTMK—Wednesday, February 23, 1994

Lodge 40, El Campo - Hillje Invites Participation in Tarok Tournament Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje will hold their first SPJST Tarok Tournament on Sunday, February 27, 1994 with registration starting at 8:15 a.m. and play beginning at 9:30 a.m. Trophies and prizes will be awarded to the winners and there will be winners after each round. Door prizes also will be given.

A German-style noon meal is planned.

On the menu will be sausage, sauerkraut, onion potatoes, peaches and plenty of desserts. Lodge members are asked to help their lodge by providing desserts for the noon meal. If you can help us out, it will be appreciated.

This tournament is sponsored by SPJST Lodge No. 40 and everybody is invited. SPJST membership is not a requirement, but is encouraged.

Billy Rollwitz, District Four Rest Homes Director, gave a good report on the homes.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Eddie Mae Huebner reminded everyone to fill out their fraternal hours reports and return them to her.

District Four Director Stanley Broz reported that the SPJST is the highest ranked, Texas-based fraternal society in Texas, according to a report issued by the A.M. Best Company. He also reminded officers about attending the Local Lodge Officers Workshop at Lodge 47, Seaton and the Awards Dinner at nearby Lodge 24, Cyclone on Saturday, March 12.

Our local lodge will purchase two new air conditioners to replace the old ones.

We have two members who will be receiving 75-year pins. They are Gustina Pustka and John Strakas. We also have four members who will be receiving 50year pins. They are Frank C. Havlak, Mary Ann Johnson, Francis Donald Kvapil, and Billie Jean Matthiesen. A special celebration will be presented in honor of these members at a later date.

President Walthers thanked the outgoing secretary and treasurer for a job well done.

Door prizes were given out.

This was followed by a moment of silence in memory of the departed members.

The roll call and minutes of the last meetin g were read by Secretary Nancy Schwertner. They were approved as read.

Communications included a thank you note from the Rudy Sefcik family for the Scholarship Fund contribution. A thank you card form the West Texas Rehabilitation Center for the contribution, a thank you card from the Runnels County 4-H Council for the use of the Lodge Hall for their Christmas Holiday Hop, and thank you cards from the four

After the above picture was made, I was reminded of many years that the Lodge 88 of Houston Choral Group has enjoyed visiting the Needville Rest Home to share the spirit of the Christmas Season by singing Christmas carols and numerious familiar Czech songs that delight the residents of the Home. now has "inherited" the exacting duties as chairwoman. She is ably assisted by a committee composed of 27 members, many of whom are experienced in this phase of lodge life.

Scheduling dance nights, contacting leading orchestral groups, providing special programs for lodge observance, promoting ticket sales and attending every function are just a few of the tasks of the committee.

"We are always happy to report the progress we've made in our monthly resume," one committeeman remarked.

And, for your efforts in making the net gain to the lodge, we members sincerely thank you.

88, Houston Reports on February Birthday Club Meeting Lodge

On February 9, 1994, the Birthday Club had their regular monthly meeting.

The meeting convened at 11:15 a.m. with President Lowrina Lindemann calling the roll. We had a very good attendance.

Secretary Rita Alexander read the minutes, which were approved as read with only a small correction. Rita then read the correspondence from the Svestka Family. The daughter, Hilda Krpec thanked the Birthday Club for the love they had for her mother for more than 50 years and a scholarship was given in her memory.

Treasurer Lillie Spies gave the financial report. She reported that many members paid their dues for 1994. She asked the few who had not paid to pay as soon as possible because of the new committee book which is about ready to be printed.

The only way your name will be in the book is if you've paid your dues.

Our cooks for February were: Bessie Dewer—Chairman, Georgia Buchanan, Josephine Buri and Margaret Bohac. At this time I'd like to apologize to Margaret Bohac for naming Margie Anders in her place. These fine ladies prepared good meals for both Wednesdays.

Visiting the residents in the Home and enjoying the array of refreshments layed out on decorated tables has always been an occasion well remembered. For this we are grateful and, again will say we appreciate your kind hospitality.

Tim. S. Kostom, Director of Choral Group —SPJSTOur cooks for March will be Alice Bily—Chairman, Martha Walla, Adele Kite and Josephine Bishop. These are all splendid cooks.

It was decided on a trip in July since it's too hot to cook.

We had two drawings for Valentine candy. The lucky ones were Louise Kadlecek and Georgia Buchanan. The Calcutta game was won by Alice Bily and Georgia Buchanan.

There were five ladies who had birthdays in February. They are: Josephine Bishop, Ann Hoffman, Martha Walla, Mary Johnson, who was 93 years young, and Frances Dvorak, who lives in Oklahoma with her son and daughter.

We sang "Happy Birthday" and then adjourned for lunch.

92, Fort Worth Reports on February Activities

Dear Members and Friends, February 12th was our first dance for 1994. The first one was supposed to be January 30, 1994, but the Super Bowl was on. Our Dallas Cowboys played and won the game.

The dance that was held on February 12 was the annual Valentine dance that is put on by our Youth Club. It was well attended. There were a lot of new faces in the crowd. We also enjoyed seeing all of the friends that have not been in attendance for a while—the Kuhanek Family from Seymour, Texas, the Pustejovsky Family, the Becan Family and others.

All seemed to enjoy the evening dancing and eating the Hubenak hamburgers and nachos. We did miss some of our regular out of town friends and some of our local families. The McMillens did

Pictured above are two of the Lodge 92 regulars, Bill and Bee Adami, who attend most every Lodge 92 meeting and dance. not attend, but perhaps there was a sickness. Anyway, a great time was had.

There were several cakes decorated for the special Valentine dance. Then there was the cake walk that everybody seemed to enjoy playing. All of the cakes that were judged were very nice. The winners were as follows: Adults—Age 18 and Older First Place—Holly Hubenak, Second Place—Martha Durham, Third Place—Joy Paprskar.

I had invited as my guests, Kenneth and Carol Kramer. It was their first time at our lodge hall. They did enjoy being there and will be coming back. Bill and Vicki Gray told me they have already rented the hall and will be celebrating their wedding anniversary in 1995.

These days you really have to plan way ahead for the lodge and for the bands.

As always, the Frank and Josephine Prochaskas have their table well filled.

Scenes

The table by the kitchen is also full at each dance. There is Bill and Bea Adami with Helen and Albert Kubala and many others. The Praslickas had several at their table also. After missing a few dances, Ella Mae Faraizl was present with her friend. Joyce Tesar, the manager, is still not doing too well with her right shoulder. She had to make a visit to the hospital. It seems just exercise will be needed to recuperate. With her arm not so well, she will not be able to decorate the lodge hall; however, many lodge friends and relatives have volunteered to help.

Our lodge members are proud of our sales representatives as they have won the Gold Award. They did try to secure many members and if we all get behind them and suggest who might want insurance, they will win again. I am sure. So, Evelyn Spacek, Albert Kubala, Martha Durham, Raymond Hubenak, Gordon Hubenak and Christine Zich—we salute you and we are proud of you.

The February 13th meeting should be well attended as it is a beautiful day after several days of cold and ice. All officers gave their reports and the trustees had an important project that had to be brought up before the members. It passed and members voted to spend the large amount it will take to repair air-conditioning ducts in the attic and insulation.

Our newly elected Sunshine Chairperson sent sympathy cards to the families of deceased members and to members over the age of 65 who were celebrating birthdays.

Please remember that next meeting, March 13th will include the presentation of 50-year pins to several members.

Those who will be receiving their pins have been notified and are to come to the March 13th meeting, starting at 2 p.m.

PS.—Good Question. A grandfather was digging potatoes along with his grandson. After several hours of hard work, the little fellow looked up into his grandfather's face and asked, "Why did you bury all those things in here?"

In the absence of Secretary Lorenda Baldwin, the minutes of the January meeting were read by David Baldwin, who also read correspondence received since the last meeting.

Dear Members and Friends, We had a beautiful day for our meeting yesterday. Think we were pretty lucky not getting all the sleet, rain and cold that was predicted. Had some low temperatures, but we couldn't complain.

Our meeting was called to order by our president, Brother Jerry Milan, and he led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

It was good that our secretary, Sister Mary Renfro was able to join us after being shut in for a couple of weeks. She still has some recuperating to do. Hope she's much better soon.

Correspondence was read from Brother Howard Leshikar, informing us that Lodge 154 will be receiving a Bronze Award.

Brother Tal reminded us to keep up our records on services that we have contributed to.

Brother Jerry then read an interesting creed for the 1930s and 1990 by Lela Standifer.

Brother Emil Milan was just released from the hospital after having triplebypass heart surgery. He is recuperating nicely with the good care Sister Sally is giving him.

Sister Martha Milan goes to the hospital on Thursday for major surgery. Our thoughts and our prayers will be with her.

We hope that Sister Renfro gets better each day.

Today we received news that Brother

Johnny Kret underwent surgery yesterday. Our prayers and good wishes go out to him.

Sister Mary Jean Stoeppelman arrived home safely from the frigid cold of Chicago, where she was taking care of her granddaughter, Abbe Eaton, while her mom, Sister Kelly Eaton traveled with her gymnasts to the Bahamas for a meet.

We were also happy to see Sister Prill after two stays in the hospital. She was looking a lot better and left on Friday with her granddaughter, Sister Eva Dockery, to spend three months with her in Surprise, Arizona.

Youth member Brandi Mason gave us a report on plans they are making.

Brandi and her brother, Brandon, have really been helping to keep our facility clean. A special thanks to all who have been working and doing a good job.

Brother Joe Milan was our door prize winner.

Our next meeting will be on Sunday, March 13 at 3 p.m.

Rozkvet, No. 172, Pasadena Encourages Members to Attend District Five Spring Meeting Lodge

Dear SPJST Members, I would like to update everyone— especially the members of District Five.

As you know, the District Five Spring meeting will be held at Lodge Rozkvet, No. 172, Pasadena on Sunday, March 13.

Directions to the lodge will be printed in an upcoming issue of the Vestnik.

There will be a roast beef and sausage dinner with vegetables available for $2.40 per plate. Serving time will be from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. The Social Hour will be from 12 until 1 p.m. A schedule of the afternoon activities appears on page four of this week's Vestnik.

Ladies of District Five are requested to donate pastries for the dinner.

In our January meeting, President Alvin Sefcik appointed a Grievance Committee consisting of Joe Krenek, Irving Theiss and Elmont Vyvial. If a member has a grievance or a complaint to report and does not want to appear at the Executive Meeting, that member will write a signed letter addressed to the committee. They can request that their .name be kept anonymous.

Several of our members, including all of the executive officers, will attend the workshop and awards dinner on the 12th of March. They are all expected to be back that evening so as to prepare and attend the District Five Spring Meeting the next day.

Our dances have been very well attended, even though there are many other functions being held on the same night.

A get well card was sent to Leo Keating, who is at home from the hospital after surgery.

SPJST Lodge No. 186, Caldwell's regular meeting was called to order by President Hlavinka. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Sister Faye Luksa.

A warm welcome was given to new member, Otto (Trey) Hebbe.

Sister Luksa called the Roll of

Officers. Four were absent. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.

The financial report was given by Brother O.T. Wine and approved.

The report on the last dance held at the lodge was a success. The Caldwell Band Booster Club will be holding their banquet at the hail.

Correspondence was read. The Lodge Officers' Workshop at Lodge 47, Seaton on March 12 was discussed. Sister Luksa then announced that the $4 membership dues were due. These dues give everyone a voting right at lodge meetings.

A motion was made and carried to honor our 50-year members on April 10th. More details will be announced at a later date. Mark it on you calendar now and plan to attend this special event.

Brother Thomas Cannon announced the date for the SPJST State Domino Tournaments. The Straight Domino Tournament will be on March 5 at Lodge 15, Buckholts. The State "42" Tournament will be on March 19 at Lodge 47, Seaton. Any SPJST member may play in these games.

Brother Clint Luksa called for adjournment.

Gladys and Wilbert Nelson Celebrate Silver Wedding Anniversary On January 8, 1994, Wilbert and Gladys Nelson celebrated their 25th Wedding Anniversary with a meal and dance at the Hutto Fire Hall. Gladys and Wilbert were married on January 3, 1969 at the Tenth Street Methodist Church in Taylor. The couple has six children: Pat Norwood, Rodney Eschberger, Sharon Holman, Nancy Johnson, Doug Nelson and Lori Nelson; eight grandchildren, and one great grandson.

To enliven the celebration, the celebrants' children shared some facts about the wedding with the guests. A collage of photographs that included all of the family members was also presented.

Both Wilbert and Gladys are active members of Lodge 187, Round Rock.

Corpus Christi Circle of Women Report on February Meeting The cold damp weather didn't deter 25 members of the Corpus Christi Circle of Women from attending our February 3 meeting. We also had four guests, Jerry Elzner, Bill Marek, Jim Havranek and Brianna Elzner, 1 1/2 year-old granddaughter of Della Elzner and niece of Becky Elzner, who brought her.

This was the last meeting Jerry Elzner attended as a guest. He was officially and unanimously voted an Honorary Member.

A thank you letter from the Womens' Shelter was read. We voted to donate $100 to Sokol Corpus Christi and February 17 was the date set for our trip to Goliad. Sixteen members signed up.

A donation was received from Jerry Elzner, Jim Havranek and Bill Marek.

Jerry also donated a large package of napkins and Pauline Novosad donated paper plates.

Bill Marek, husband of President Kathy Marek, who is running for Nueces County Commissioner, Precinct Two, gave a talk of his reasons for entering politics and his views.

Happy Birthday was sung to Albertina Oakes, who was also our head hostess and Annie Regmund, who was absent.

Happy birthday, Annie.

Betty Jurica brought a jar filled with candy hearts for a guessing game which was won by Anita Regmund. Several ladies guessed the winning number, so names were drawn for the final winner.

An outstanding door prize was sent to us from California by Lottie Ramey, who became a member of our Krouzek. She had written her brother, Jerry Elzner, that she enjoyed reading about our activities in the Vestnik. The beautiful handmade cut work table runner she sent was won

by Lillian Coville. A beautiful crocheted scarf made by Norma Baker was won by Kathy Marek. Crocheted house slippers brought by Sophie Snapka were won by Lillie Hayek and Mary Elzner won a miniature basket filled with candy hearts that I made and donated.

The ladies seemed to enjoy the brightly decorated tables with pink table cloths and red net runners and porn pours. I particularly liked the head table with the contrasting purple runner.

Even with our great attendance, the absent few were thought of and missed.

We hope to see them at our next meeting on March 3.

We were glad to have Rose Jaworski with us. She thanked everyone for, the calls, cards, and prayers and is recovering very well. Maria Prill, longtime member, came by to say goodbye to us since she will be going to live with her daughter out of town.

Hostesses for March will be Clara Cohen, Martha Durham, Betty Whitehead and Anne Schneider.

Birthday honorees were Clara Cohen, Pauline Morbitzer, Imogene Reeves and Rose Nieswiadomy.

Door prizes were won by Kitty Rippin, Mary Palacek, Elsie Anders, Anna Lesikar, and Esther Herrera.

The February 12th Valentine Dance was announced. Members were encouraged to "put their heart into it and dress for the occasion.

"Why Worry," a reading taken from Dear Abby's column was read and it gave all of us a good laugh.

The meeting adjourned for lunch and games with 44 ladies and eight men present.

I suspect that all of us are ready for some kind of stable weather. This crazy pattern of warm one day and freezing cold the next is making it difficult to get over the flu or colds. Some of my daffodils have bloomed which is a welcome sign. Take care and I'll see you next month, God willing.

Gebala to Receive Lifetime Achievement Award at Polka Festival Bernie

The Texas Polka Music Association's Fourth Annual Texas Polka Music Awards and Festival will be held March 4-6 in Sealy, Texas. The event will be headquartered at the Knights of Columbus Hall and Pavilion.

Food, dancing, arts and crafts are scheduled for the three-day event, with music for dancing by 13 top Texas polka bands.

The Polka Mass and Awards Ceremony will be two of the highlights at this event. SPJST's own, Bernie Gebala will be the recipient of the TPMA's Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to fraternalism, heritage preservation and polka music.

Some of the bands scheduled to perform during the festival include: The Vrazels, Central Texas Sounds, Bobby Jones, the new Sound Connection, and the Dujka Brothers.

Cost of this event is $5 on Friday, $8 on Saturday, and $6 on Sunday. Advance tickets are $15 per person for the weekend.

Bexar County Czech Heritage Society Schedules Dance The Annual Bexar County Czech Heritage Society Dance featuring the Tommie Vanek Band will be held from 3 until 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 6 at the Martinez Social Club at 7791 St. Hedwig Road in Martinez, a San Antonio suburb.

Admission will be $5 at the door, with children under 12 admitted free.

University of Texas to Host Moravian and Slovak Folk Concert The goal of the Travis-Williamson Counties Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas is to preserve the CzechMoravian history, heritage, culture, language and arts in Texas and to make the public aware of programs related to this heritage. Some Czech cultural programs have been held in Austin recently and some others will be held during the coming months.

On Monday, February 7, Dr. Michael Heim, Ph.D., Professor and Distinguished Translator from the Department of Slavic Languages and Literature at UCLA in Los Angeles, presented on the topic: "Vaclav Havel: Playwright and Politician." This lecture was sponsored

by The Department of Slavic Languages and the Texas Chair in Czech Studies at UT Austin. About sixty people attended this lecture.

On Saturday, March 5, 1994, The Department of Slavic Languages and the

Texas Chair of Czech Studies is sponsoring a music concert: "Czech, Moravian, and Slovak Folk Music." Peter Hoffman, Ph.D., a Czech violinist, will perform.

Dr. Hoffman is a professor at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic, and is presently a visiting professor at Evanston, Illinois. The program will be from 4 until 6 p.m. in Calhoun Hall, Room 100, on the University of Texas campus in Austin. Admission is free.

On Saturday, April 16, Miroslav Prochazka, Ph.D., the current holder of the Texas Chair in Czech Studies, will present a public lecture on the subject of "Folk Theatre" on the UT campus. The presentation will be from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Old Music Building, Room 3.102. A reception will follow and admission is free.

Dr. Prochazka is the chair of the Department of Czech Literature at Charles University in Prague. He is a visiting professor at UT Austin for the 1994 Spring Semester. This program is also sponsored by the Slavic Languages Department and the Texas Chair in Czech Studies at UT Austin.

The Texas Chair of Czech Studies, which is sponsoring both of these programs, is a million dollar endowed chair, funded by the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas. Contributions to this foundation were made by many organizations, corporations, foundations and individuals. The goals of the Educational Foundation is to help preserve the Czech language and culture in Texas.

The Travis-Williamson Counties Chapter has 50 active members committed to the preservation of the CzechMoravian culture and language. We invite anyone interested in preserving the Czech-Moravian culture to visit our monthly chapter meetings and learn about the Society's various projects.

Svatava Jakobson Receives 1993 Texas Czech Heritage Award Dr.

Dr. Svatava, Jakobson, center, retired Professor of Czech at the University of Texas at Austin, recently received the 1993 Texas Czech Heritage Award.

Pictured with Dr. Jakobson are Robert Janak, president of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas and Dorothy Bohac, president of the Travis/Williamson County Chapter of the Society. The award, established in 1992, recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to preservation and promotion of Czech Heritage in the State. A native of Prague, she and her husband, the late linguist Roman Jakobson, fled the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1939 and then immigrated to the United States in 1941. She taught the Czech language at Harvard University before coming to the Slavic Language Department at the University of Texas where —Submitted by Alfred Vrana she taught until her retirement in 1978.

He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. He served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of World War II. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 364, SPJST Lodge No. 79, Corpus Christi, and the KJT. He worked with Hobart Manufacturing for 27 years and was self-employed for 15 years.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Bartosh of Corpus Christi; three sons, Charles (Sandra) Bartosh of Portland, Gary (Carol) Bartosh and Dennis Bartosh, both of Corpus Christi; four daughters, Helen (Walter) Heffner, Barbara (Craig) Gibbs, and Traci (Gerald) Garcia, all of Corpus Christi, and Joyce (Rick) Franklin of Houston; one brother, Henry Bartosh of Waco; one sister, Ida Fehmer of Dallas; and 16 grandchildren.

A Rosary was recited at 7 p.m., Saturday, January 29, 1994 in the Maxwell P. Dunne Chapel. Funeral Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday, January 31, 1994 in St. Patrick's Catholic Church with burial in Seaside Memorial Park Cemetery.

He was a member of St. Philip Catholic Church in Dallas, KJT Lodge in Ennis and SPJST Lodge 84 in Dallas. He worked for a Dallas Ford dealership for 39 years. During World War II, her served for 30 months in the U.S. Navy.

Services for Brother Wolcik, 92, of Highlands, were held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, January 20, 1994 at First United Methodist Church in Highlands with Dr. James H. Rieter officiating.

Mr. Wolcik died on Tuesday, January 18 in his home.

He was a barber in Highlands for more than 60 years, a member of Highlands First United Methodist Church and a member of the SPJST for more than 50 years.

Survivors include his wife, Mollie; son, Earl and wife, Carolyn of Houston; daughter, Virginia Allison and husband, John of Houston; grandchildren, Ron, Lisa and Daryl Allison of Houston; Brad and Jan Wolcik of Baytown; and Leslie and Warren Adams of Baytown; greatgrandchild, Clayton Adams of Baytown and many, many friends. Burial was at White Cemetery.

Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 47, Seaton, Texas, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest and sincere sympathy to the family and friends of our departed lodge sister, CLARA SALAC, age 87, of Temple, who died on Friday, January 21 in a Temple nursing home.

Services were held at 10 a.m. on January 24, at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home of Temple with the Rev. Leonard Leddy officiating. Burial was in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Cyclone.

Mrs. Salac was born in Seaton to John H. and Louisa (Symmank) Hurta. She was a retired homemaker and had lived in the area all her life. She was a Catholic.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ladis Salac in 1956.

Survivors ar two daughters, Carolyn Salac and Louise Salac, both of Temple; four sisters, Lillian Schmidt and Lorraine Motl, both of Houston, Viola Doskocil of League City and Helen Hejl of Rosebud; and two grandchildren.

Memorial may be made to St. Joseph's Cemetery Association, in care of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Cyclone.

Expression of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Karel Havlicek, No. 4, Hallettsville, Texas, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere and deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother, EMIL GRONES, age 84, who passed away on Tuesday, January 11, 1994. He was born on November 10, 1909 in Lavaca County to the late Joe and Annie Ehler Grones. He married Selma Galetka Grones on August 11, 1935, at Vsetin.

He was a retired farmer and rancher, and the retired custodian of the Hallettsville Independent School District, having served for 15 years. Mr. Grones was a member of the SPJST and Czech Moravian Brethren Church of Vsetin.

Survivors include his wife, Selma Grones, daughters, Gayenell Chudej and

Marilyn Sevcik both of Hallettsville; sons, Melvin Grones of Seguin, Allen Grones of Inez, Royce Grones of Indialantic, Florida, Leon Grones of Portland, and Anthony Grones of Victoria; 22 grandchildren, and, six greatgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Grones on December 3, 1993 and grandson, Kenneth Sevcik on January 2, 1984.

Prayer services were held on Wednesday, January 12, at 7 p.m. at the Kubena Funeral Home chapel. Services were held at the Vsetin Czech Moravian Brethren Church on Thursday, January 13, 1994 at 10 a.m. The Rev. Henry Beseda and Rev. Albert Flatmann officiated. Burial was in the Vsetin Cemetery.

Pallbearers were grandsons: Matthew Grones, Randall Grones, Ronald Sevcik, Chris Chudej, Ross Grones, Scott Grones, and Rodney Grones. Honorary pallbearers were grandsons: Mark Sevcik, Gary Chudej, Jon Grones, Eric Grones, and Russell Grones.

Memory of Jane Petrusek In

Funeral services for Mrs. Jane Sabrsula Petrusek, a lifelong member of SPJST Lodge No. 141, Sealy, were held at the First Presbyterian Church in Sealy at 2 p.m. on Friday, January 14, 1994 with interment in the Sealy. The Rev. David Hambrick officiated.

Pallbearers were grandsons, Martin Petrusek, Erwin Petrusek, Jr., Tom Jurik and great grandson, John Hodges, and nephews, John W. Sabrsula and L.D. Wasicek.

Alvin Jan, Hank Koym, Franklin Schodek, and Glenn Browne, nephew, and Wilbert Milberger and Arnold Havemann were honorary pallbearers.

The Rev. Dr. Roger Harano held a memorial service for Mrs. Petrusek at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Beaumont at 10 a.m. on Thursday, January 13.

Born on April 18, 1896 in Hostalkova, Vsetin, Czechoslovakia, Jane Sabrsula was the daughter of John and Rosina Sabrsula. She came to the United States at an early age and grew up in Sunnyside and Wallis. She attended Sunnyside and Hartsville schools.

On November 2, 1920, she was united in marriage to Frank Petrusek in Wallis, and became a housewife. They were engage in farming in the Wallis area for many years.

She belonged to the former Wallis Presbyterian Church and to the First Presbyterian Church in Sealy before she moved her membership to Westminster Presbyterian Church in Beaumont where she resided for a number of years.

In more recent years, Jane Petrusek spent time with her four children, traveling across the nation from Oregon to Florida and points in between. She loved to travel and made many trips by plane.

Her loving disposition endeared her to many people as well as her devoted family and relatives.

Mrs. Petrusek died after a one-day illness in a hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Florida at 3 p.m. on Sunday, January 9, at the age of 98 years.

Survivors are two daughters and sonsin-law, Irene and Steve Neshyba of Corvalis Oregon, and Ruth and Johnnie Jurik of Beaumont; two sons and daughters-in-law, Benjamin J. and Minnie Petrusek of Metairie, Louisiana and Erwin A. and Betty Petrusek of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; four sisters, Lena Koym of East Bernard, Emma Wasicek of Sealy, Minnie Schodek of Rosenberg and 011ie Browne of Sealy; 14 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Frank Petrusek on April 1, 1974; brothers, John, Frank, Joe and Charlie Sabrsula; and sisters, Rosie Kocurek and Ruth Janek.

Knesek Funeral Home of Wallis was in charge of arrangements.

Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 35, Elk, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sympathy to the bereaved family of brother, RICHARD L ADAMEK, age 40, of Waco. He died in a local hospital on January 27, 1994.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Saturday, January 29, at Columbus Avenue Baptist Church, with Rev. Ron Durham and Dr. Ed Carter officiating.

Military graveside service and burial were held at Waco Memorial park.

Richard was born on March 6, 1953 in Waco and graduated form Mart High School in 1971. He served in the U.S. Army from 1971 - 1976. He was a member of the Texas Army National Guard. On September 7, 1973, in Seoul, Korea, he married Kyong Hui Han. He was a member of Columbus Avenue Baptist Church, where he was a member of the International Sunday School Dept.

As owner of National Security and Alarm Products, Inc. for ten years, he worked with many of the local banks and Savings and Loan companies. He was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 35 in Elk. Survivors include his wife, Kyong Hui Adamek of Waco; his parents, Olga and Calvin Adamek of Mart; two sons, Robert and Steven Adamek, both of Waco; one sister, Cathy Adamek of Austin; two brothers, Paul Adamek of Riesel and David Adamek of China Springs.

Active pallbearers were: Orville Adams, Rev. Joseph Ashkar, Robert Bryan, Rev. Reiji Hoshizaki, Won Jin Kimn, Gary Paskos, and David Urbanovsky.

Honorary pallbearers were: Dr. Robert Anderson, Dr. Eugene Frenkel, Dr. Christopher Logothetis, Dr. Paul Peters, Dr. Gene Pitman, Roy Reagan, and Dr. Thomas Valigura.

The family received visitors at Wilkerson-Hatch Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m., Friday, January 28.

Expression of Sympathy We, the officers and members of SPJST Lodge Karel Jonas, No. 28, East Bernard, Texas, wish to express our sympathy to the family of our departed brother, STEVE J. PATLOVANY, of El Campo, who passed away on Wednesday, January 19, 1994. He was born on December 22, 1922 in Fayette County to the late John and Emilie Kubena Patlovany. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Europe.

He was a retiree of Fransco Gas Pipeline Corporation where he had been employed for 35 years. He was a member of Saint Philip's Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Frances; son, Lanny, and two grandsons, Chris and Matt of San Antonio; sisters Georgie Hartinstiener and Josie Baca, both of Dallas; and brothers, Edward and Raymond Patlovany of Houston.

He is preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Patlovany.

A wake was held at 7 p.m. on Friday, January 21 at Triska Funeral Home in El Campo. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Saturday, January 22, 1994 at St. Philip's Catholic Church with the Rev. Thu Nguyen and Rev. Gerald Cernoch officiating.

Pallbearers were nephews: Frankie Drabek, Donald Drabek, Thomas Thumann, Kenneth German, Charlie Hartinstiener, Thomas Patlovany, Alton Dittrich, and Michael Baca. Honorary pallbearers were friends and ushers.

Burial was at Holy Cross Memorial Park with military honors, under the auspices of the American Legion.

Memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society or to the American Heart Association.

Pechacek Family Reunion The sixth reunion of the descendants of Fred Pechacek will be held on Sunday, July 17, 1994 at the St. Joseph CCD Building in Elk. Registration begins at 10 a.m. and a memorial service will be held at 11:30 for those family members who have passed away since our last reunion in July 1992. A short business meeting will be held.

A buffet style lunch, to be shared by all, will be served at 12:30. Each family is to provide enough food and dessert for their group and for any guests that they may wish to invite. Bread, tea, coffee, paper goods and silverware will be provided.

Youth Letters Lodge 24, Cyclone Reports on February Meeting and Party Dear Readers and Members, On February 13, 1994, Lodge 24 had their monthly meeting and Valentine's party. We discussed a candy fund raiser and an upcoming April garage sale which will be held at our hall.

After the meeting, we had a party. We had lots of goodies, exchanged Valentines, played games and won prizes.

Following our party, we visited a nursing home in Temple and brought the residents our handmade decorated Valentines. We enjoyed sharing a few moments with the elderly people. They were cheerful and excited with our visit.

We brightened their day and it made us feel good, too.

Later, we all attended the fun District Two Skating Party in Temple. I met lots of members from different youth clubs. I was very lucky to win one of the candy heart prizes. I really had a fantastic time.

29, Taylor Youth Club Reports on February Meeting Lodge

Dear Readers, The SPJST Lodge No. 29, Taylor Youth Club meeting was held on Sunday, February 13 at 3:30 p.m. There were 22 members present and two visitors. The meeting was called to order by Jason Cervenka. Kristen Muegge led the Pledge of Allegiance. Christie Haag read the treasurer's report. No minutes were available.

New business discussed included a social. We will be going to a Texas Longhorn basketball game. Donna will check into this and let us know.

March 13 will be the District Two Spring Meeting at Lodge 47, Seaton. The District Youth Club will hold a meeting and elections at 1 p.m.

Our next meeting for March will be changed from the second Sunday. We will let you know when it will be.

Dear Readers, The Youth Club of Lodge 142, Houston held their monthly meeting on Wednesday, February 9, 1994 at 6:30 p.m. We had six youth members and four adults present.

The youth discussed some upcoming events, the first of which is our District Five Spring Meeting. This meeting will be held on March 13th at Lodge 172, Pasadena. Each youth family is requested to bring a pastry item for that day. There will also be an election of District Five youth officers. The young people were also reminded to sell tickets and collect money for the District Five youth prize drawing that will be held on that day.

Our social for the month was decided.

We will be going to the IMAX Theater on Saturday, February 26th. We also planned to go out to eat afterwards.

We will be having a cake sale and a youth prize drawing after the monthly lodge meeting on Sunday. The Youth Club always appreciates the support of the members who contribute to their sales.

The meeting adjourned and we all went out to eat.

Mluvnice--- Grammar 1. In Czech the adjective must agree in gender form with the noun that it modifies. Example: malt' still, (small table), maid kniha, (small book), male okno, (small window.) In the vocabulary there are adjectives given showing the three gender endings jr, a, and é.

2. In the reading exercise the feminine nouns kfida, pohadka, and kniha, are spelled with the ending u.

This is because in Czech when a noun is used in some function other than the subject or predicate nominative it must be put into a case. The aforementioned feminine nouns are in the accusative case functioning as direct objects answering the question "what?" The feminine nouns ending in 'a' change this ending to '11' when used as direct objects.
