100 Pennies Goal Now Within Sight Even though the SPJST's annual 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive officially came to an end on December 31, monetary donations from lodges and individuals continued arriving in the Home Office through the end of the second week in January.

Through January 13, SPJST members, lodges and friends had donated a total of 89,364.32—enough for 18 additional SPJST scholarships. State FAC Frank Klinkovsky, who coordinated the drive, thanks all contributors for their generosity in helping to attain this level of support.

Budgeting Process Addressed

One of my resolutions for the New Year is to lose some weight and get back into shape. Over the last two years-or ever since working at the Home OfficeI've put on a good twenty pounds. It's a case of not enough exercise and too much access to to kolaches, sausage wraps and covered dish suppers.

The subject of exercise and eating is anything but a simple piece of business.

In each case, moderation and education is the key. This past Sunday, looking through some of my wife's literature on exercise and dieting, I ran across a report that identified life „ Lodges insurance sellers as among the first institutions to study and promote the connection between "physical activity" and "good health."

Indeed, some of our members may recall how, a generation or two ago, some of our SPJST lodges actively promoted group exercises, including gymnastics, as a way to achieve long-term physical and mental well being.

Since that time, many studies have examined the link between physical fitness, nutrition and health. Exercise, it turns out, is more important than counting calories in regulating your weight.

Likewise, it has been determined that regular exercise can play an important role in relieving stress. Research has shown that proper exercise can produce a natural "tranquilizing effect" in persons of all ages, including the elderly.

According to a report by Alan Pardini, a researcher with the Aging Health Policy Center at the University of California, several basic principles should guide you as you begin to engage in increased physical activity. These are: • Be realistic: Your goals should be reasonable in terms of the physical outcome you hope to achieve; • Start slowly: Exercise programs should be started slowly and carefully based upon your past patterns of physical activity and your current health status; • Warm-up: Begin each day's exercising with 15 to 20 minutes of stretching and conditioning before you being more vigorous exercise; • Pace yourself: Perform all exercise, particularly vigorous exercise, in moderation; • Cool down: Allow 20 to 30 minutes to cool down after exercising by slowly walking and stretching; • Enjoy your activity: Select exercises which meet your individual goals and which you enjoy.

Are the benefits that the SPJST offers its members truly meeting their needs while at the same time remaining within an acceptable expense level for the Society? This is one of the questions a fraternal benefit society like the SPJST needs to periodically ask itself.

At their January meeting, Supreme Lodge members voted by a unanimous margin to scrutinize its annual budgeting and cost allocation processes. This kind of planning demonstrates a willingness on the part of management to measure the effectiveness of its programs and operating procedures.

Accountants typically refer to the process of closely trackin g and monito ing bus iriessoper ations as "cost accounting." It's a wonderful tool that enables management to see-at a glancethe per unit cost of the project at hand.

Some lodges may find it to their advantage to follow the lead of the Supreme Lodge and during 1994 reevaluate their own annual budgeting and planning processes. Planning provides a structured way of involving a number of people into thinking about the future-this is often its chief value.

If a lodge plans to carry out an activity that it has done for several years, then the easiest way to prepare a budget for the coming year is to add a percentage increase for inflation and other factors contained in the previous year's budget.

The alternative, sometimes referred to "zero-based budgeting" requires that each line item of a budget be calculated anew.

Management then operates under the assumption that any item in the budget will be zero unless it can provide full justification for some other figure.

Obviously, some combination of these two approaches is desirable in the budgeting process. The previous year's budget figures can be immensely helpful in estimating the coming year's expenses.

It is important to remember that there is no one "right way" to plan. The best planning processes are those custom designed to fit the needs of your members and the working styles of the trustees and officers. Perhaps most important, if your budgeting process is to succeed, there must be a climate of enthusiasm within the organization toward planning.

Without it, even the best laid plan will have little chance for success.

To conclude, good health and vitality are the products of our total lifestyle. A program of regular physical activity is most effective when combined with proper nutrition and freedom from undue stress-not to mention a more controlled appetite for kolaches, sausage wraps and covered dish suppers!

On the Sick List

When the Supreme Lodge met in Temple last week, one important face was missing. Vice President Bernie Gebala was in the hospital undergoing tests for some recurring back ailments that he has been experiencing. As of this writing it was not known if Brother Gebala would be back in the Home Office this week.

Regardless, we hope that he is feeling better and wish him a full and speedy recovery.

OFFICERS' REPORTS - The Supreme Lodge Officers' reports were seconded by Director Hanus. The reports will be placed of record in Exhibits Volume 14.

BOARD MEETING PROCESS - There was a discussion about coming up with a more simplified way to handle the reporting process. With the Bi-Monthly consideration of full reports, too much time is being used on preparing and generating reports.

Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska suggested that we revert to having full fledged reports on a quarterly basis which would leave the March and September meetings for planning and considering specific problems and needs of the organization. Vice President Gebala suggested some means of making the reporting and meetings work for us and making our process work better. Legal Advisor Kacir suggested inviting of input from local members at the two brainstorming meetings. Vice President Gebala discussed the need for all board members to support decisions made rather than being fragmented in our responses if a decision meets some opposition by a small segment of our membership.

It was decided that quarterly reports would he considered in January, May, July, and November meetings and the March and September meetings were set aside for research and development topics and goals and objectives. The new process was adopted on unanimously adopted motion by Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska, seconded

by Financial Secretary Mikulas.

OLD BUSINESS EMPLOYEE SALARIES - The matter of adjustments of employee salaries was taken up. Discussion followed. There was a review of information presented on a department by department basis.

A motion was adopted to adjust employees' salaries with an increase of 2.6 percent or $50, whichever is greater, excluding the field sales staff. (McBride, Hegwood, Gatewood, Hlavaty and Wiest). The motion was by Director Broz, seconded by Director Vanek, and it carried unanimously.

It was agreed that the holiday gift items for Home Office staff and Supreme Lodge members was a turkey for Thanksgiving and a ham for Christmas. The motion was by Director Vavra, seconded by Director Bayer and carried with 11 in favor and Director Kohutek voting in opposition.

LODGE INCENTIVE PROGRAM - On motion by President Leshikar, seconded

by Legal Advisor Kacir, it was agreed to continue the lodge incentive during 1994. It was agreed to add an additional category for those lodges making an effort but not qualifying for the honorable mention category. Motion carried unanimously. The new category requirements will be six new members and four acts and a $200 award.

NFCA MEMBERSHIP STANDARDS - President Leshikar reported the membership standards proposal at the NFCA was approved on a close margin. The SPJST delegates voted in opposition as directed by our Board.

MISSION AND GOALS - There was a discussion about lodge mergers and disbanding of lodges.

EMPLOYEE TRAINING - President Leshikar asked clarification of reimbursement of employee college classes. After discussion, a motion was made that a full time employee be allowed reimbursement of successful completion of continuing education for up to 4 college semester hours per calendar year for tuition and books provided such course will improve the employee's job performance and skills effective immediately.

SCHOLARSHIP - President Leshikar brought up a question concerning what family members of the Supreme Lodge are eligible for the general scholarships. There was discussion and no action taken at this time.

CHARTER LODGE RESTORATION - President Leshikar asked that we consider a request for funds from Lodge No. 20, Granger. The matching funds request is for $911.66. After discussion,Director Vavra moved, Director Kohutek seconded that the request be approved. Motion carried unanimously.

STATE YOUTH DIRECTOR JONI LANGE'S REPORT - The report was reviewed. Concerning rule book amendments A-Q, these were reviewed and discussed. (Copy of SYD entire report is filed in Exhibit 14) President Leshikar moved that the amendments be adopted. Director Bayer seconded, and the motion carried unanimously.

STALE YOUTH DIRECTOR'S PROPOSALS - President Leshikar reported that with the increased risk of liability, the necessity of well-trained staff at camp becomes increasingly important. President Leshikar suggested that the Board approve reimbursing one half of the medical and water safety training cost and the district pay the other half for training SPJST members to serve at district camps in the medical and water safety capacity.

Action was deferred.

STATE FRATERNAL ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR FRANK KLINKOVSKY'S REPORT - President Leshikar reviewed the State FAC report.

SALES - Vice President Gebala reported that sales were good.

ANNUITY I/II TRANSFERS - Vice President Gebala reported we had approximately 30 transfers from ANNUITY Ito ANNUITY II. ERRORS AND OMISSIONS INSURANCE FOR SPJST SALES REPRESENTATIVES - Vice President Gebala gave a full report of what is required for self insurance. The matter was discussed. No action was taken. There was detailed discussion about possible exposure. Action postponed until we see if the NFCA successfully implements an NFCA sponsored E & 0 Policy.

BEEPERS - Vice President Gebala reported the need for three beepers. SecretaryTreasurer Mikeska moved that three beepers be authorized. The motion was seconded

by President Leshikar and it carried unanimously.

OFFICERS' MINUTES - The minutes of the Supreme Lodge Officers' meetings of September 3, 8, 15, 21, and 28, and October 12, 13, 14, 19, and 22 were considered and approved on unanimously adopted motion by Director Kohutek, seconded by Director Broz.

FORECLOSED PROPERTY - Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska reported on foreclosed property as follows: (a) REO #182 & #183 - Commercial property located at 6620 - 6630 Azle Avenue, Lake Worth, Texas in Tarrant County.

Listed for sale with Prudential Keystone Realtors for a lowered price of $99,500.

Will get property cleaned. Supreme Lodge Officers and Director Pokladnik have full authority to decide and act on offers.

The report was accepted on motion by Vice President Gebala, seconded by Director Vavra, and carried unanimously.

LOSS RESERVE - Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska moved approval of loss reserves for three properties owned as listed in his report for a total of $52,500. Director Hanus seconded, and the motion carried unanimously.

REAL ESTATE LOAN DELINQUENCIES - A list of loans delinquent three or more months was considered as well as Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska's recommendations for action. The list was reviewed and individual actions were discussed. He reported thirtytwo loans delinquent over three months. Of these loans, there are fifteen loans on a workout; four loans in bankruptcy/foreclosure; one loan has an acceptable deferral; and the remainder of the twelve loans do not fit into any of the above categories.

Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska moved approval of the recommendations. Director Vanek seconded, and the motion carried, unanimously.

LOSS RESERVE ON REAL ESTATE LOANS - Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska reviewed loss reserves for possible losses that could be incurred on seven loans. The total reserve recommended amounted to $55,389.49. Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska moved approval. Director Hanus seconded, and the motion carried unanimously.

COST OF SMALL LOANS - Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska reported he had looked into the cost of small real estate loans as directed in the last meeting. He referred to a detailed analysis of costs for loans closed the past year in the amount of $30,000 or less. He reviewed the analysis which indicated that the cost of closing loans in this size category is subsidized based on the study. He reviewed how the figures were arrived at and discussion followed. No action was taken.

LOAN MODIFICATION PROGRAM - Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska reported some 52 loans were modified through October. He further discussed action taken by the Supreme Lodge officers to reduce the amount of the modification fee in response to recently initiated programs of other lenders. The current loan modification fee is 1 percent of the loan balance or $400, whichever is greater.

The modification program was extended to the first day of the January Supreme Lodge meeting unless the program is withdrawn earlier. The motion was by SecretaryTreasurer Mikeska, seconded by Vice President Gebala, and it carried unanimously.

Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska stated that a Home Office employee had modified their loan prior to the recent drop in interest rates and asked if the Board wanted to make an exception for a Home Office employee to not require a second fee for a second modification. After discussion, a motion was adopted that the employee would be required to pay a second fee for an additional modification the same as any other member if they found it feasible to do so. The motion was by Director Hanus, seconded by Director Kohutek, and it carried unanimously.

MORTGAGE LOAN TRENDS - Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska discussed the decrease in percent of mortgages to other assets and extensively discussed our mortgage program. He discussed problems in getting assignments of notes of members wanting to refinance loans held by other lenders. He discussed the 90-day membership requirement and other restrictions. After discussion it was agreed on motion by Vice President Gebala that the Society would require membership in the SPJST and no qualifying period to qualify for consideration of a mortgage loan. The motion was seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas and carried unanimously.

DIRECT BILL - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported some 93 percent of certificates now on direct bill.

DELINQUENT LODGES - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported on three lodges delinquent with premiums.

UPDATE OF VESTNIK SURVEY - Financial Secretary Mikulas stated that 1,897 Vestnik subscribers did not return their cards and had their Vestniks stopped. He anticipated a reduction in Vestnik costs of approximately $25,000. He stated that any member who had their Vestnik stopped can have it restarted by simply calling his department. Financial Secretary Mikulas stated a number of people called thinking their Vestnik was stopped but on some of these, it was a problem of delayed delivery by the post office.

TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF INSURANCE AUDIT - The original of the examination report was presented for final consideration by the Board. The report had been reviewed in its entirety at the previous meeting. The report was reviewed and ratified to be made an official part of the minutes. Copy of Report and Management Letter will be placed of record in the Exhibits Volume 14. The motion was by Financial Secretary Mikulas, seconded by Director Broz, and it carried unanimously.

The audit report will be sent to the lodges by Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska and the By Law and Finance Committees would also be furnished with a copy of the examination report and management letter. Motion by President Leshikar, seconded by Director Vanek, and carried unanimously.

1993 REFUND TO LODGES - Financial Secretary Mikulas referred to information reports listing the 1992 refund to lodges and projected 1993 refund. The information was reviewed and projected refund was discussed. There was comparison of amounts paid in previous years. The proposal projects the 1993 refund to lodges based on $1 per paid up certificate and $8 per premium paying certificate. The proposal will be finally considered in the January Supreme Lodge Meeting.

PERPETUAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND- Financial Secretary Mikulas reported on a contact with representatives of the Nelsonville Lodge No. 68 about an agreement worked out to transfer the amount being held for a perpetual scholarship to the regular scholarship program. The motion ratifying the action was by Director Hanus, seconded by Director Broz, and it carried unanimously.

LOANS IN PROCESS - Legal Advisor Kacir reviewed status of a list of loans in process. He discussed implications of homestead laws and pointed out existing Board policy that we not finance a sale between a parent and a child unless the seller can declare homestead elsewhere and the facts support it. He discussed the fact that certain legislators and financial institutions will again approach the legislature in January 1995 for the third consecutive legislative session attempting to get the Texas Homestead Laws changed.

TAX SUITS - Legal Advisor Kacir discussed tax suits and threatened tax suits.

FORECLOSURES - Legal Advisor Kacir discussed foreclosures in process and foreclosures started but brought current or in process of workout.

Wednesday, January 19, 1994---VESTNEK/5 REAL ESTATE OWNED - Legal Advisor Kacir discussed actions necessary in connection with foreclosed properties to take possession on two properties.

LEGISLATION - Legal Advisor Kacir discussed the implications of the proposed recodification of the Insurance Code in 1995 or 1997. He cautioned this would need to be monitored closely.

Legal Advisor Kacir reported that the major topic at title underwriting company seminars is homesteads.

CONFLICT OF INTEREST, RESOLUTION AND STATEMENT - Legal Advisor Kacir reviewed a proposed resolution and statement which needed consideration. The proposed document was reviewed and it was decided to postpone action to the January Supreme Lodge Meeting.

EDITOR VANICEK - Editor Vanicek reviewed the action whereby the Society purchased computer equipment which gave him the option of preparing the Vestnik camera ready here in the Home Office. He estimated the action had reduced the cost of publishing the Vestnik by some 30 percent or approximately $300 weekly.

He discussed the fact that some 20 percent of the Vestnik subscribers or approximately 1,900 had not returned their cards. He stated he felt the publication was meeting the need of our members but that there might be a substantial group of members we need to reach.

He discussed the savings in publishing the Vestnik and suggested that some of the savings should be channeled back into the publication to improve it and he would like to meet with the Supreme Lodge Officers to discuss this possibility before the next meeting. He stated that we must look at our communication program as an investment.

He discussed the need of lodges to promote their activities and what we could do at the Home Office to help the local lodges.

Recess for the day was taken at 5:45 p.m. until 8:30 a.m on November 9th.

DIRECTORS' REPORT DIRECTOR VAVRA - He discussed a meeting with Lodge No. 122 and the subsequent merger with Lodge No. 201, Bleiblerville. He stated he and President Leshikar met with Lodge No. 94 and visited the Lodge No. 38 picnic.

DIRECTOR KOHUTEK - He discussed functions at Lodge No. 29 and Lodge No. 80. He stated the Marlin Lodge was progressing on getting chartered. Director Kohutek stated he observed that an employee involved with a lodge activity had listed the Home Office number for information calls. It was concluded that employee should not publicly list the Home Office number for information calls for promotion of local lodge sponsored activities. There was also discussion about the Board's position on Board members or employees holding of offices and positions in local lodges.

DIRECTOR BROZ - He stated that the recent District IV fall fun day was good. He summarized his travels and activities and efforts to secure new sales representatives in local lodges.

DIRECTOR HANUS - He stated that there were several activities in District V including the fall gathering of the district. He commented on his travels and a possible merger of a lodge. He asked for additional information on several matters.

DIRECTOR VANEK - He discussed his efforts in the district including his concentration on trying to secure active sales representatives in several lodges in District VI. He commented on activities in District VI and a good attendance at the fraternal fest and also the family fun day.

DIRECTOR BAYER - He reported on activities in the district and the family fun day.

DIRECTOR POKLADNIK - He reported on functions in District III, including the fraternal fest and family fun day. He thanked the Board for sending him to the NFCA Annual Meeting and stated he had the honor of installing President Leshikar as the President of the President's section of the NFCA. He discussed the good contact between the NFCA and other Society. Director Pokladnik spoke of his representation at functions of other fraternal societies as well as â&#x20AC;˘ activities at Lodge No. 84.

He stated that he had accepted a plaque in behalf of Kathy Fritz, who could not be pre sent at the '1PC to accept a plaque in appreciation of her serving as president of the FIC section.

He reported that a portion of the cash from the $750 paid to the district to host the fraternal fest was taken out and awarded in a drawing as door prizes. The Board concluded that such funds should not be used as door prizes and should be used exclusively to promote and put on the activity.

Editor Vanicek was present and welcomed back to the meeting.

NEW BUSINESS STORAGE OF BOOKS - President Leshikar reported on an inquiry from the Texas Brethren Church if there was any interest by the SPJST to house about seven boxes of historical and other material. After discussion, President Leshikar moved that we accept the request to store the books if final arrangements are made to our satisfaction.

The motion was seconded by Vice President Gebala. Vote was taken with 11 voting in favor and Director Hanus voting in opposition.

The consideration of the previous item led into a discussion about the planning committee that was authorized by the last convention to look into long range planning for the Library, Archives and Museum. Various members of the Board expressed their ideas.

TEMPLE PUBLIC LIBRARY - President Leshikar presented a request from the Friends of the Temple Public Library. After discussion Legal Advisor Kacir moved that the Society donate $300 to the project. Director Hanus seconded and the motion carried unanimously.

PRESIDENTS SECTION - President Leshikar was authorized to serve as president of the NFCA Presidents' Section.

AGE 96 HONOREES - President Leshikar presented information about members who will attain age 96 during 1994.

SCHOLARSHIP FORMS - Information was shared about the scholarship forms now in use.

LODGE PROGRAMS - President Leshikar briefly reported on lodge programs being considered on Home Safety and Drug Prevention.

REPORT ON NFCA LAW COIVIMI - President Leshikar referred to the conclusion section of the extensive report of the NFCA Law Committee. There was discussion about the IRS study of the exempt status of Fraternal Benefit Societies and the need to show that our fraternal programs continue to expand commensurate with our financial growth.

Kathy Fritz was called into the Board meeting and introduced by Vice President Gebala. Chairman of the Board Pokladnik presented her with a plaque in appreciation of her service as president of the F.I.C. section. Kathy thanked the members of the Board for authorizing her to serve in this position.

YOUTH DEPARTMENT - President Leshikar reported on the cost of EMT and water safety training. It was decided on motion by President Leshikar, seconded by Vice President Gebala to pay one half of such courses up to $75 for members who can be present at youth camps and activities.

NEWSPAPER ADS - Vice President Gebala suggested the placement of ads for sales representatives in areas we need them. He pointed out this may attract non-members and the Board indicated support of this approach in those areas where the Vice President is authorized to appoint sales representatives. The ad placement will be initiated by the SPJST district director. The action was authorized on motion by Director Vanek, seconded by Director Vavra and carried with 11 in favor and Director Kohutek opposed.

OUTDOOR ADVERTISING - Vice President Gebala asked the Board if there was any desire to place a billboard Christmas greeting at a cost of about $600. After discussion, it was agreed to authorize up to $400 for a similar project. The motion was seconded by Director. Hanus and it carried unanimously.

PROPOSED INCENTIVE PROGRAM FOR 1994 - Vice President Gebala reviewed the proposed program: Running back Club Quarterback Club Coach's Club Super Bowl Club Million Dollar Producer Award Vice President Gebala moved approval of the proposed incentive program. The motion was seconded by Director Broz and it carried.

FFMA BOARD - Permission was granted to Vice President Gebala to attend one of the two meetings of the Fraternal Field Managers Association Board.

INVESTMENTS - Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska requested consideration of investments and loans for the period beginning September 1, 1993 through October 31, 1993. After responding to two requests for information, a motion was unanimously adopted ratifying the investments. The motion was by Director Bayer and seconded

by Director Hanus.

Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska discussed investment policy and referred to graphs and called attention to the fact that FNMA securities including collateralized mortgage obligations comprised some 9 percent of our bonds. He called attention to the fact that FNMA securities are a government agency obligation but are not direct obligations of the U.S. Government.

Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska stated that many insurance companies are utilizing.

FNMA securities such as CMOs because they provide a higher return based on maturity expectations. He thoroughly discussed the fact that the SPJST has been well known for very conservative investment of funds and that the interest sensitive products demanding highly competitive yields make it very difficult to retain our conservative investment philosophy and pay out competitive rates on universal life and annuities.

He discussed the fact that Society imposed rules and other changes in the lending industries are making it more difficult to make sufficient mortgage loans to maintain our historic percentage of assets invested in mortgage loans. The Board was asked for feedback about our general investment policy specifically asking if the Board was comfortable in putting more of our assets in agency securities such as FNMA CMOs. After discussion, Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska moved that the present investment policy be affirmed. Director Hanus seconded nd the motion carried unanimously.

6/VESTNIK—Wednesday, January 19, 1994 UNIVERSAL LIFE - Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska reviewed the current interest rate and the gross spread on universal life which currently is 0.713 percent. There was discussion about rates being paid by other insurance companies and it was generally indicated that our current rate of 7 percent was competitive.

After due deliberation, Financial Secretary Mikulas moved that: 1) We set the UL rate at 7 percent for the period from December 1, 1993 through January 31, 1994.

2) Actuary John Agee be contacted for his input and review of profitability and as to consideration of a rate adjustment in January.

Vice President Gebala seconded the motion and it carried unanimously.

ANNUITIES - Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska reviewed the current interest rate on Annuity I and Annuity II and referred to detailed information showing gross spread on both Annuity I and Annuity II. The current accumulation period rate is 5 percent on Annuity I and 5.8 percent on Annuity II. After allowing time for discussion, SecretaryTreasurer Mikeska moved that the Annuity I rate be left at 5 percent and the Annuity II rate be left at 5.8 percent for the period from December 1, 1993 through January 31, 1994. The motion was seconded by Director Vavra and it carried unanimously.

ANNUITY REINSURANCE - Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska reported that he had looked into the possibility of entering into an annuity reinsurance program. He stated that this would constitute a complex contract that would require a great deal of study.

He asked for input. No action was taken.

Office for the Fort Concho Days. He invited all to the annual Lodge No. 160 dinner on December 12th.

He discussed if the SPJST would consider making loans to members who had been through a recent bankruptcy. He suggested that the Investment Committee consider such individual members on an individual basis. Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska responded that if information is produced to the Investment Committee, we will review such cases.

DIRECTOR HANUS - He stated that for the past 10 months, our sales has increased, our mission and goals are on course, the value of our assets has increased and generally we continue to make progress for our future.

DIRECTOR VANEK - He stated he was looking forward to insurance classes in his area. He discussed activities in District VI and also brought up the premium refund that was held back on a lodge now in process of merger. He asked if such funds could now be paid to be utilized by the merged lodge. Director Vanek moved that the refund be paid at this time. Vice President Gebala seconded and the motion carried unanimously.

It was understood that on withheld premium refund amounts going up to three years back, such amounts can be paid if the lodge merges, reorganizes or becomes active in some other way upon such report by the president and director and the Board will be informed of the action.

DIRECTOR BAYER - He asked if the Home Office has any policy on storing the district minutes in the archives. He stated he thought we had a very good meeting.

DIRECTOR POKLADNIK - He stated he was pleased that we had individuals who were active in the National Fraternal Congress and the Texas Fraternal Congress. He expressed appreciation for the invitation to the Home Office Christmas party.

FINANCIAL STATEMENT AS OF 10-31-93 - Financial Secretary Mikulas reviewed the statement of income and expenses for the ten months ending October 31, 1993. Financial Secretary Mikulas projected that our assets would reach $100 million before yearend.

ADVERTISING ALLOWANCE FOR EDITOR - It was decided to allow $100 to the editor for advertising items.

BUDGET REVIEW - Financial Secretary Mikulas did an item by item review of status of income and expenses as compared to the budgeted amounts.

Director Pokladnik announced that the next regular meeting of the Supreme Lodge was set to begin on January 12th, 1994 at 8:30 a.m. to continue the 13th and 14th.

DISCOUNTS - Financial Secretary Mikulas asked for consideration of the discounts on Class A and B Certificates for 1994 which previously allow a 25 percent reduction of premium of certificates in class A and B whose certificates were in force 35 years or more and who have attained the age of 70 years and an additional 25 percent reduction when they attain age 75 years.

The tentative date for the workshop is March 12th.

Director Vavra moved adjournment. Director Kohutek seconded and the motion carried unanimously.

Chairman of the Board Pokladnik adjourned the meeting at 2:10 p.m.

Director Pokladnik relinquishes the chair to move that the discount be allowed for 1994. Financial Secretary Mikulas seconded and the motion carried unanimously.

MAILING EQUIPMENT - Financial Secretary Mikulas called attention to the need to replace our postage meter and the inserting system. He presented a proposal from Pitney Bowes with two options. The price of the recommended system is $36,405.50.

After full review of the options, it was agreed that Financial Secretary Mikulas be authorized to negotiate and purchase the recommended Pitney Bowes system. The motion was by Director Broz, seconded by Director Vavra, and it carried unanimously.

QUARTERLY STATEMENT - The quarterly statement was reviewed and ratified on motion by Financial Secretary Mikulas, seconded by Director Vavra and it carried unanimously. The quarterly report is filed with the Texas Department of Insurance.

LODGE MAI I ERS - Legal Advisor Kacir reported that he received an inquiry from a local lodge about the possibility of the local lodge leasing their historic building to an individual. He reported that the matter had been discussed at a Supreme Lodge officers' administrative meeting. He stated that after review of the ramifications of leasing of the facility for one year, it was concluded that it would not be in the best interest of the local lodge'to enter into the arrangement. He indicated that the lodge was receptive to assistance from the Vice President's Department concerning sales and also assistance from the President's department involving the fraternal activities coordinator and the State Youth Director.

ASSOCIATION OF THE FRATERNAL BENEFIT COUNSEL - Authorization was granted to Legal Advisor Kacir to attend the Association seminar and meeting in Florida if Legal Advisor Kacir deems the agenda beneficial to attend. The motion was

by Director Broz, seconded by Director Kohutek and it carried unanimously.

DIRECTOR VAVRA - He reported that local Lodge No. 94 - Wheelock requested permission to meet quarterly instead of monthly. Director Kohutek indicated he had a similar request from Lodge No. 74 - Lovelady. It was understood that our rules require a written request. Director Vavra congratulated President Leshikar on being elected president of the NFCA Presidents' Section. He also complimented State Field Manager Gene McBride and the sales department on good sales training. He thanked the officers for submitting their reports in time for review. Director Vavra remarked that with increased attendance at various functions, the $300 advertising allowance does not cover the needs. On motion by President Leshikar, seconded by Director Bayer, the advertising allowance for Supreme Lodge members was set for $500 for 1994. Motion carried unanimously.

DIRECTOR KOHUTEK - He complimented State Field Manager McBride on the quality of his sales training. He asked for clarification of display of the flag and information was shared.

Director Pokladnik relinquished the chair to Director Vanek to allow him to move that a pamphlet be sent to each lodge on proper display of the flag. The motion was seconded by Director Kohutek and it carried unanimously.

Classes and Travel

Travel to the Czech Republic and Study Czech Travel to the Czech Republic and study Czech with people from all over the United States and Holland. The study tour will be from July 5th to July 29th, 1994. The group leaders will be Thadious Polasek of Texas and Helena Landovska of Prague, Czech Republic.

Housing and food service will be at the dorms of the Agricultural School at Suchdol in the northern part of Praha.

Instruction will be by professors of The Charles University and a linguistic institute in Praha.

Along with the classes, there will be cultural excursions in Prague, including tours of the Prague Castle, picture

There will also be out of town excursions to: Krivoklat, South Moravia, Telc and the chateau Vranov, Karlovy Var, and Tabor.

Wallachian/Moravian Studies Program For anyone who is still interested in the Wallachian/Moravian Studies Program scheduled for this summer in Roznov, Czech Republic, please contact Carolyn Meiners (409) 968-3806 by January 31.

This program is a non-profit joint venture between the Czech Heritage Society of Texas and the Wallachian Outdoor Museum as a part of a cooperative cultural exchange program that will enlighten Czech Texans about their heritage.

Classes will cover topics such as Wallachian/Moravian history, geography, language, folk costumes, music, dance, cooking, textile techniques, and traditional crafts. Class Offered in Austin

A Conversational Czech I class is being offered at Austin Community College in Austin, Texas, beginning January 25 to March 10, 1994. The class will meet on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Reagan Campus.

Anyone interested in learning Czech will be interested in taking this course.

No knowledge of the Czech language is required. Emphasis is on vocabulary and pronunciation. The teacher is Czech born Marcela Nouzovska.

Because of the positive response to the Conversational Czech I and II classes, Conversational Czech III is now being offered by Austin Community College, beginning January 24 to March 9, 1994.

The class will meet on Monday and

Wednesday nights from 7:30 to 9 p.m.. at the Reagan Campus. Prerequisites for the Czech III class are either Czech I and/or Czech II or a speaking ability of the Czech language.

Registration for the courses began November 30, 1993 at the Austin Community College Administrative office.

Classes at Westchester Spring Branch Evening School Czech

Last semester, nine students successfully completed the Czech I course at the Westchester Education Center of the Spring Branch Independent School District.

These students all expressed a desire to continue their studies during the spring semester in the Czech II course which will begin on Tuesday, February 8 and continue for 12 weeks with the final class on Thursday, May 5, 1994.

Any former students who have competed Czech I and any others who have studied and/or are familiar with basic Czech grammar will be welcome in this class. Study this semester will include further vocabulary development, sentence constructions using the seven cases, all verb groups in present, past and future tense, etc.

Registration schedule for this class is as follows: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Jan. 17 - 21 9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Sat., Jan. 22 Jan. 24 - 27 9 a.m. - 8 p.m.

Late registration Jan. 31 - Feb. 3 9 a.m. - 7 p.m.

Lodge 4, Hallettsville Reports on December Meeting and Party Dear Members, Our lodge held its meeting and Christmas party on Sunday, December 12, 1993 at the Youth Center, beginning at 2 p.m. with a good attendance.

President Annie Vahalik opened the meeting and welcomed everyone. Vice President Joe Siptak led the pledge to the flag.

Gaye Galetka read resolutions of sympathy for our departed members, Josephine Zaruba and Daniel E. Grones.

The reading of the minutes and the treasurer's report were dispensed with.

Thank you note were read by Helen Zabransky.

Youth Leader Annie Vahalik reported that the youth club members and their parents had been at Southern Manor Nursing Center to sing Christmas songs.

They also visited with the residents and gave out candy. The youth made pine cone Christmas trees to give to the residents at the Stevens Convalescent Center at the lodge's monthly games party.

The youth then presented an enjoyable and entertaining Christmas program consisting of a welcome. C-H-R-I-S-T-M-A5, tradition of St. Nicholas, Joy to the World on the organ and skits on the Czech traditions of Christmas. Skits focused on foods, decorating the Christmas tree and how they celebrate New Year's Eve with everyone joining in and toasting in 1994 a bit early. Thanks to youth leaders Annie and Shirley and to the youth: Jeff, Scott, Adam, Joshua, Jeremy, Elizabeth W., Trevor, Nicholas, and Elizabeth V. for a program well done.

Annie thanked James Svetlik for standing in for Tucker Scott who was unable to attend. James later joined the youth club.

Santa Claus arrived and visited with everyone and gave out candy and fruit.

Christmas songs were sung.

A delicious lunch was served with the meal prayer given by Annie Vahalik.

Christmas prize bingo was played and enjoyed by the youth and adults.

Door prize winners were Annie Vahalik and Scott Holy.

Hope you all had a Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year and that you are now ready to get started on Mr. Bill Souchek's 25th Czech Class at Lodge 88.

That's right. Several others and I have been successful in convincing Bill that, just as we can't do without his teaching the class, he just can't get it out of his system and quit teaching the Czech Ianguge.

Accordingly, the 25th Czech Language Class is scheduled to start at Lodge 88 on Beall Street at 7:30 p.m. on February 7th. Other class dates will be February 21 and 28; March 7, 21, and 28; April 4, 18, and 25; and May 4.

As before, we look forward to your participating in the class presentations and to your involvement and interest when Bill continues with his latest presentations. I am excited and hope that you join me in looking forward to getting further involved in relearning YOUR Czech language.

The treasurer's report was given by Nancy Milner. It too was approved as read.

Visitors to our lodge were acknowledged. They were Anita Clemons, Nancy and Lendell Outlaw, Casey Crigger, Pam Outiaw, Sandra Caldwell, Lill Pechacek, Jelly Pechacek, Allis White, Adolph Pavelka, and Lynn Leger.

The youth report was given by Barbara Pavelka. She reported that the youth club had made a profit at The Christmas on the Avenue in Mart and sales of chances on the quilt donated by Florence Frazier had gone well. They had 13 members, five adults, three social members, and one guest at their meeting.

She also reported that the children were going to sing Christmas carols for the Christmas program.

December birthdays were acknowledged. They were Nancy Milner, Gloria Pavelka, and Leona Garrett.

Vernon Wood read correspondence from the Supreme Lodge regarding our membership drive.

The meeting was then turned over to Cyril] (Sid) Pokladnik, District Three Director, for the installation of officers.

Our lodge was indeed honored to have him and his wife present.

The meeting was called to order by President Breitkreutz at 3 p.m. with a fairly good attendance.

The pledge to the flag was led by RD Easter and Christopher Pavelka.

The minutes were approved as read.

Treasurer Nancy Milner gave a detailed report and it was approved.

Our visitor was Hubby Frazier.

Thank you notes from Charlie Pavelka and the Harry Pechacek family were read.

The youth club had poor attendance.

They are planning a cake walk for March.

January birthdays were celebrated by Helen Pospisil, Joe Tepe, and Frances Fabianke.

The Sunshine Committee reported that Charlie Pavelka, Adolf (Muscle) Pavelka, and Richard Adamek have been ill lately.

Junior and Kathy Breitkreutz became new grandparents on December 5 when daughter, Robin had a baby girl. She is already a SPJST member. Great-grandparents are Henry and Inez Breitkreutz.

The door prize was won by youth Christopher Pavelka and adult Charlie Pavelka. Charlie donated his prize to the youth club Floor Chairman Gene Edward Pavelka thanked all who helped to make the New Year 's Eve Dance a success. Nancy Milner thanked all who helped to make the Christmas party a happy occasion.

It was voted to put "Workers Only" signs on the kitchen doors and to fix the lock to keep the small children from running through.

For the Grievance Committee, those selected were: Eugene Gerik, Fred Kubitza, Ernest Banik, Earl Milner and Gene Edward Pavelka.

47, Seaton Reports on anuary Meeting

Dear Readers, The January meeting of Lodge 47 was called to order at 2 p.m. by President Wallace Jez. Flag bearers David Koslovsky and Mark Greger presented the flags and led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. We remained standing in a moment of silence for deceased members Lillian Reid and Frank Shenkir.

There were 65 members and eight visitors present. Visitors included Howard Leshikar, Gertrude Kahlig, Della Marinek, Linda Gersbach, Ann Balusek, Waymon Richter, Terri Richter and Willie Hegar.

Reported on the sick list was Henry Janacek and Bill Wofford. Our heartfelt sympathies are extended to the family and friends of Brother Wofford who has since passed away.

The minutes from the previous meeting were read and approved. We had one new member, Megan Weathersbee, and one transfer, Walter Gram. Welcome to Lodge 47.

Installation of officers for 1994 followed. Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar installed the new officers.

The minutes of the Board of Directors were read by Lucy Mihatsch in the absence of Board Secretary Edwin Vasicek.

Officers reports followed. New President Frank Klinkovsky gave a big thank you to all outgoing officers and board members. He thanked each one individually and commented on jobs being well done. He also stated his appreciation to each and everyone who helped with the Christmas party.

FAC Dorothy Pechal reminded us that here will be a Progressive "42" tournament held at Family Night this month. It will be on Friday, January 21st.

Hamburgers and fries will be available in the kitchen, so everyone come out and enjoy supper and get in the "42" games.

She also reported that the incentive program went very well with 40 new members. The incentive banquet will be held on March 12. The fraternal services records are due on or before May 1st.

New Youth Leader Ginger Greger reported 21 members, one visitor, three adults, and one new member, Megan Weathersbee, present. She stated that her goals for the youth club include having a Beseda circle again and a May Fete.

Dates to remember are the Camp T-shirt contest deadline - January 31, District Two Youth Achievement Day - July 10, Camp July 23 - 29, State Royalty and Youth Achievement Day - August 6 and 7. The Youth Club will also meet on family night this month and make Valentines to take to nursing home residents.

Under new business, the committee appointments for 1994 were called out. I will report all of the committees at a later date.

Birthday wishes were extended to quite a few members-15 to be exact.

Celebrants are: Delores Skrabanek, Lucy Mihatsch, Gladys Marek, Georgie Sodek, Janelle Novosad, Emily Stuteville, Leo Kahlig, Ed Skrabanek, Marie Hegar, Julie Vitek, Agnes Trampota, Irma Klinkovsky, Magdalen White, Linda Gersbach and Ann Balusek.

The domino games will start at 7 p.m. so we could be through at about 9:30 p.m. I hope that the weather is favorable so everyone can come for an enjoyable evening among friends.

49, Rowena Reports on Christmas Party

Lodge

Lodge 49, Rowena, had their Christmas party for members and friends on December 17.

We had a very nice crowd come and enjoy the evening of fun, food, and fellowship.

After the social time, we had a prayer of thanks for all of the blessings of 1993 and for the delicious food that the mem-

bers and friends brought.

Instead of gift exchange, we had a food collection of canned and non-perishable foods. We then gave the foods to our county food pantry. From there it is distributed to the needy people in our area.

We had a similar food drive for our Thanksgiving social and the people are always very responsive.

In appreciation of this, we drew names of the givers and gave them a chance for three prizes. People winning prizes were: Clara Ruppert, Lillian Waschmann and Caroline Kvapil.

Really, doesn't it make you feel good when you give to or help someone—not only for the holidays, but all through the year?

Thank you from Lodge 49 to all of the folks who did bring these foods.

The evening ended with everyone playing cards or dominoes.

The SPJST Lodge 79 election of officers was held at our December 19 meeting. Reelected were our President, Jerry Sijansky; Vice President, Anna Marie Moss; Treasurer, Milly Elzner; and Youth Club LEader, Glenda Elzner. Jill Sijansky was elected Secretary and Glenda Elzner was elected our FAC, a new position for our lodge.

We ended 1993 on a good note, with more members attending meetings than in the recent past. With an active youth club and activities for all members planned by our new Fraternal Activities Coordinator, 1994 should be a great year for Lodge 79.

Lodge 80, Holland Reports on January Meeting Dear Members and Friends, Holland SPJST Lodge No. 80 met in regular session on Sunday, January 2, 1994 with President Harold Rohde presiding. The usual opening exercises were observed. The minutes were approved as read by Secretary-Treasurer Glen Latham. Brother Latham gave the committee reports and all were doing well.

He also reported the game nights were well attended.

New members to the lodge included Kirk Goodnight and Jacob Crotty.

Welcome to Lodge No. 80!

Communications included a thank you note from the Frank Shenkir Family and information from the Supreme Lodge on the incentive plan for 1993.

The audit committee found the books of the lodge in proper order.

There was discussion on the cleaning of brush around the barbecue pit. It was decided to clear that area as well as the brush around the emergency lane.

District Two Director Willie Kohutek and his wife, Adeline, were guests of Lodge No. 80, with Brother Kohutek installing the officers for 1994. They are as follows: President - Harold Rohde Vice President - G.L. (Pee Wee) Brisbin Secretary-Treasurer - Glen Latham Financial Secretary - Glenda Liles Brother Kohutek also gave a fine report about the Supreme Lodge activities.

Sister Della Horelica was the only member in attendance having a birthday in January. Sister Della and her husband, Brother Otto, are very active in all lodge functions. We at Lodge 80 enjoy their enthusiastic outlook at all times. Happy Birthday Sister Horelica!

Door prize winners of District Two Director's prizes were: Curtis Wolf, Barbara Taisler, and G.L. Brisbin. Other winners of Lodge No. 80 door prizes were: Dean Brisbin, Joe Sumbera, Rick Benner, D.I. Bohac, and Carl Klotz.

88, Houston Reports on Annual Meeting

Lodge

Lodge 88 met for their regular annual meeting on December 12, 1993 at 10 a.m.

This is my first 1994 letter. I just didn't have time to write and I knew no one would have time to read the Vestnik either during the holidays. I was out of time for Christmas.

My children Arlene and Alfred had Christmas Eve dinner and all were present. We all had a wonderful time. The family of my deceased sister, Talita, and John Hilsher, had their celebration at Joyce and Jim Lyons. We all miss being together but the family has grown and we almost have to rent a bigger place. I did manage the whole group for Thanksgiving. On New Year's Day, Betty Gayle and Larry Green asked me to

join them for black eyed peas, cabbage, brisket and ham, which was another lovely day. We thank the dear Lord for our health and hope we'll all have a great 1994.

We had the reports form the different committees and letters from people who were so grateful for things that the lodge had done for them in their sorrows and concerns.

We have a number of members who are ill and need our prayers. They are Virginia Kuncie, Charles Kadlecek, Bernice Wahlberg, Steve Kelly, Larry Pflughaupt, Gus Gerlich and Karl Lindemann. We do hope they'll soon be well.

The youth had a Charity Food Drive coordinated by Lindsey Michalak and the youth.

Ed Miculka, president of the Men's Club, reported the new officers for 1994.

They are: President Tom Marsh, Vice President A.J. Stayton, Secretary Enos Wessel, and Treasurer Johnnie Kosut.

The club had a good year, and as I've said before, they've done lots of work. They are now 51 members strong. The prize drawing on Czech Day netted $442 which was given to the lodge.

Ed stated, "Speaking of having breakfast? " 51 men can eat lots of food in one year. Food consisted of bacon, biscuits and eggs like you wouldn't believe.

Talking about eggs for one year-180 dozen eggs were served. That's 2,160 eggs and every one was scrambled.

Ed concluded with a little story: Mr. Bill Souchek was walking a street in downtown Houston and met a preacher.

The preacher asked, "Mister, do you know the way to the post office?"

Brother Bill gave him directions. The preacher thanked Brother Souchek and looked at Mr. Bill and said, "Mister, if you come to my church on Sunday, I will show you the way to Heaven." Mr. Souchek looked at him sort of puzzled and replied, "Feller, how will you show me the way to Heaven when you can't even find the post office."

We then had the election of officers for 1994 and they are as follows: President Jerome J. As I was looking through all of the newspapers from surrounding towns, I ran across this article from the Fayette County Record and it stated that Wilbur Hernsohn has been in the Veterans' Administration Hospital in Houston since October 28, 1993. Wilbur's home was less than a mile from my home. He was a great tuba player in the Lodge 88 band.

During World War II he was a prisoner of war of the Japanese for 41 months and was also a Bataan Death March survivor.

Anyone who survived the Death March showed he was a very strong-willed person.

These are not the complete minutes, as Mildred Holeman is the recording secretary and I presume that she has the complete minutes.

The youth had a most beautiful Christmas program on December 5, 1993. The title of the program was "Christmas Comes to Texas," and it was directed by Jeanette Bender, assistant youth leader. Youth Leader Barbara Linney thanked everyone who helped make this program a success.

Afterwards, a medley of carols were sung by the Lodge Choral Group under the direction of Helen Hegwood. Tim Kostom was in Branson, Missouri on a tour during that time. You adults, take note for this next Christmas and make plans to see and hear the cutest and sweetest thing—all of the little children who take part in the program. Rudy and Celestine Darelek had around 20 grandchildren present and close to that many more someplace else. What a blessing!

1994—Let Us Resolve We don't do better accidentally. This means that we must have purpose and a plan to go on to better things. The fact that we occasionally break a resolution should not stop us. When we break the water pitcher, we don't quite drinking water. Therefore, let us resolve what we ought and perform what we resolve.

Lodge 92, Fort Worth Reports on January Meeting Dear Members and Friends, The New Year 1994 is here, but the way so many members are sick, it is not too enjoyable. I suppose that all over the state there is a lot of sickness—like colds and flus and other ailments that the doctors just can't identify. The situation gets even worse with our soldiers and others travelling to foreign countries and bringing back new illnesses. I hope that this will soon pass and that all get well.

Our January 9 meeting was wellattended, but some of our officers were sick and unable to be present while another may have been out of town. As always, like in other lodges, the reports are interesting and informative.

Sister Christine Zich, our secretary, read long minutes from the last meeting in November. That was the meeting during which time our officers were elected.

There was no meeting in December due to the Christmas party for the four lodges.

Our officers were installed at the party.

Sister Christine always gets the minutes correct except some dates are

wrong—hut, as it has been said, if nothing is done, then no mistakes are made.

Carl Zich, as president, tries to keep order that no one talks too long or too many times on one subject. It is always held to a business meeting so as to keep it interesting. Al Kercho really does keep our records in perfect condition and lets us know what is spent and where and when we make money. He gives each officer a complete outline on paper that allows them to look over it good.

The trustees are also doing a good job.

They are the ones who agree what is to be done and what needs to be paid in order to keep the lodge hall in good condition.

The lodge manager, Joyce Tesar, with her husband, Frank, Jr., tries to keep the lodge hall rented. New rates were set to go into effect on March 1, so if any member, or some of your friends, want to rent the building, call the lodge at 642-1361.

Calling Sunday through Thursday is less expensive. Also, note that members can reserve the lodge for one-half price; however, a member has to belong for one year to be able to get the discount.

Our next dance will be held on January 30. That is Super Bowl Sunday, but don't let that keep you from coming to the dance. We will have two TVs that will let you keep up with the scores. If the Cowboys get to the Super Bowl and win the game, those at the dance will be in for a surprise. The dance starts at 3 p.m. and the ball game starts at 5 p.m., so you will not miss any of the game.

Then, on February 12, the lodge will host its annual Valentine dance from 8 p.m. until midnight. Also, please mark your calendar for Sunday evening, March 20 when the band will he Don Peachy from Wisconsin. You will enjoy this band, so don't miss it.

It is sad to hear that Sister Rose Jaworski is in the hospital. She had surgery and I hear that she is doing well.

Rose, good luck, and hurry and get home soon. John Motl is in the hospital but is expected to go home soon. On the sick list are Albert Kubala who was in the hospital one day. Evelyn Spacek has been ill since Christmas and was unable to stay at the meeting. Carol Zich Everett is about the same with some improvement. She is at home with Carl and Christine. She has blood clots in both legs. It was sad to find that Mary Rose Trojacek, who was in a nursing home here in Fort Worth, passed away. Her funeral was in Ennis, Texas. I visited with her quite often.

It was nice to see that Sister Evelyn Spacek, our sales representative, was number one in District Three.

Congratulations to you. For her accomplishment, she received some lottery tickets. Lodge 92 is proud of all of our sales representatives as our lodge was one of the winners in the 1993 Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program.

One evening they told James that they'd be out late; however, the wife came home earlier than expected. "James," she said, "come to my room." He followed her.

"And off with my lingerie." He removed all that too. "Now, James," she said, looking him in the eye, "Don't ever let me find you wearing my clothes again!"

Lodge 142, Houston Reports on anuary Meeting At 2 p.m., our meeting was called to order by President Keith Kieschnick. We had 41 members and 11 visitors sign our register hook. All stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag and all remained standing to observe a moment of silence in memory of our departed member, Henry Koehler. May he rest in peace.

Secretary Alice Jochen held the roll call of officers. All were present. She then read the minutes from our annual meeting. These stood approved as read.

At our annual meeting, the names of Frank and Dorothy Tumis were not mentioned even as they had donated so generously to our Youth Club. Thank you, Frank and Dorothy.

Also, our reelected youth leader is.

Sister Elizabeth Hermis. She was elected by acclamation. Our entire membership wants to thank you for the great' job that you are doing with the youth of Lodge No. 142.

Under correspondence, Marilyn Spivey, our fraternal activities coordinator, read her correspondence. Our lodge has acquired 15 new members and we have met our activities quota to receive a lodge incentive award for our membership. We will receive our recognition at the workshop and awards banquet on March 12. Marilyn also reported on the scholarship program, 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive, and the SPJST deer antler contest.

All members are urged to keep track of all fraternal acts in 1994. All members will be competing on an individual basis.

The financial secretary/treasurer's report was read by Sister Rosie Tumis.

The Sick Committee reported that Brother Charles Motl is in the hospital.

The Board of Trustees and bar report were delivered by Brother Henry Hermis, Sr. We are pleased to announce that Sister Rosie Tumis was appointed kitchen manager for 1993. Thank you, Sister Rosie. This makes our meetings such a pleasant occasion each month.

Our bar manager for 1994 is Brother Howard Kieschnick. Thanks go to Brother Howard for accepting this position.

The Youth Club report was given by Amanda Hermis. The youth presented a nice program at our annual Christmas party on December 17th. The youth want to thank all of the generous members for their donations—Mr. and Mrs. Joe Braunagel, Mrs. Jo Buri, Rita and Henry Hermis, Frank and Dorothy Tumis, Agnes Fabscher, and all others for their much appreciated donations.

Visitors recognized were Marie Stayton, A.J. Stayton, JoAnn Buri, Jo Buri, Joe Braunagel, Joe Gambil, Steven Braunagel, Helen Hegwood, Anthony Florian, Phillip and Leda Wilson, and Burnis Sims. Sister Helen Hegwood, our State Field Representative, spoke to us and she is always so charming. She wished everyone a Happy New Year.

Finally, thanks to our elected sales representatives, namely Robert Kieschnick, Sidon Tumis and Dennis Hermis.

Brother Tumis is third in the district.

Our SPJST has reached the $100 million plateau!

Sister Marie Stayton, our District Youth Counselor, spoke to us. She expressed how she always enjoys herself at our lodge, as everyone here makes her feel so warm and welcome. We wish to

thank her and let her know that the feeling is mutual in that she also makes us feel so good.

Sister Stayton commended President Kieschnick for the many nice things that he has done in our district. He also helped tremendously at camp and all of these acts are greatly appreciated. We have a wonderful lodge membership, officers, and young people. We are so very proud to have John Buri as our State King, and District King. He is also our lodge king.

The office of Flag Bearer for 1994 at our lodge has been filled. The youth club members of Lodge No. 142 are our flag bearers. Congratulations to our youth members!

Our lodge Christmas party was enjoyed very much and we had a great turn out with plenty of good food, music and refreshments. Oh yes—Santa came too!

Our 1994 lodge meeting dates are as follows: January 9, February 13, March 6, April 10, May 1, June 12, July 17, August 14, September 11, October 9, November 13, and December 11. Our 1994 Annual Christmas Party will be December 16, 1994 at 7 p.m.

The capsule drawing for $80 went unclaimed, due to the absence of F. Aslong and Victoria Stanley. Next month's prize increased to $90. Come to our meeting on February 13 and you could be the lucky one. The senior door prize went to Sister Elizabeth Hermis.

January birthday celebrants included: Howard Kieschnick and Joyce Molenosky. January anniversary congratulations go to Martin and Frieda Kieschnick, who were married 51 years on January 17th.

The meeting adjourned at 3 p.m. The next meeting will be at 2 p.m. on February 13, 1994. See you all then.

154, Fort Worth Reports on January Meeting

Lodge

Our January 9th meeting was called to order by our president, Brother Jerry Milan. He welcomed us to a New Year and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

The minutes and financial report by Sister Mary Renfro and the treasurer's report by Sister Anna Johnson were approved as read. Sister Mary Pavey reported on cards sent and that the lodge had sent a plant to Sister Millie Kubala, who received her certificate at the age of 96 years. Happy to hear that she is doing so well.

We got the report that Sister Maria Prill has been back in the hospital since January 5th. Our prayers and thoughts are with her.

So many have been down with the flu.

We hope that everyone is better.

Correspondence was read on a lodge officers' workshop that is to be held on March 12. Watch for details.

Brother Tal Milan distributed new forms to members for recording our fraternal services. He also has six new members: Robert Welch, Russ Welch, Rickey Connoway, Catlyn Connoway, Albert Bucks and Jacob Kenner. Keep up the good work.

Sister Anna Johnson reported that her son Brother Kent Johnson is home from the hospital and doing better.

Sister Mary Steinman sent a report that the Youth Mb attended the youth "Sleep In" and Holiday in the Park and that they had a wonderful time.

Our annual Christmas party was a big success. A large group was in attendance and enjoyed the program. What can you say when Santa Claus makes an appearance! A special thanks to Sister Carolyn Clevland for being Mistress of Ceremonies. She always does a wonderful job.

Thanks to all who brought the treats of all kinds that everyone enjoyed. The fellowship was great. The kiddoes kept Santa busy wanting to have their picture taken with him. Special thanks to Santa for making so many happy kiddoes.

Our New Year's Eve celebration was also a big success in spite of all those who were sick but still sent their best wishes.

A lot of happy people enjoyed the midnight celebration. Sister Jeanie Mason's blackeyed peas and cornbread were really enjoyed by al!.

Thanks to all who helped to make our hall look beautiful. Sister Patti Gage needs a special thanks. Makes you feel so good when everyone thanks you for the wonderful time they had and that they are looking forward to next year.

Brother Jerry and Sister Henrietta Milan will leave for Naples, Florida for Henrietta's solo art exhibition at the Rick Moore Gallery on January 14.

We extend congratulations to Brother John Pace, II and his new bride, Deedra Kaye Burney, who were wed on New Year's Day at the First Baptist Church in Briar in a beautiful ceremony. John is the son of Brother John and Sister Lori (Steinman) Pace and Deedra is the daughter of Dewayne and Marsha Burney. After the ceremony all were invited to Vance Godbey's for the reception. The couple honeymooned in Cancun. May they have many years together.

We will have a country-western dance on Saturday, February 19 from 8:30 p.m. until 12:30 a.m. with music by the Country Junction Band.

Sister Rose Steinman was our door prize winner and she donated it to the Youth Club.

Our meeting adjourned to refreshments. Our next meeting will he on Sunday, February 13, at 3 p.m.

Lodge 155, Austin Reports on Christmas Party The next meeting will be held on Sunday, February 6, at 2 p.m. at the Faith Community Church located at 18000 Peyton Gin Road.

Elected officers for 1994 were installed by Mr. Gene McBride, SPJST state field manager, at the lovely Christmas luncheon held at the Steak and Ale Restaurant on December 5, 1993.

True fraternalism is portrayed at our meetings and we invite guests any time.

Meetings are held at the church unless members offer their home for a meeting.

We will try to plan to have refreshments and play dominoes after the meetings.

Our social hour is always enjoyable. We will again have a drawing for five lottery tickets.

Mrs. Gladys Kunschik, lovely wife of Vernon Kunschik, passed away during the holidays after a lengthy illness. Our members offer condolences to the family.

The children and grandchildren of Louis and Margie Hrabina recently hosted a party in honor of their parents at SPJST Lodge No. 172 in Pasadena.

The Hrabinas was married December 19, 1943 in Baytown.

A catered meal was served by Staff Barbecue of El Campo and music was played by Due West and Kristi Hahan.

A great time was enjoyed by everyone who attended.

Louis and Margie have three children. All are members of Lodge 172.

The children and their spouses are Jim and Patricia Hrabina of Austin, Texas, David and Mary Beth Hrabina of Baytown and Sylvia and James Buchta of Clear Lake. Grandchildren are Anne Marie and Karen Buchta, and Kelley and Christopher Hrabina of Baytown.

185, New Braunfels Reports on Christmas Party Lodge

Members and guests of SPJST Hill Country Lodge 185 gathered at the Bavarian Village hall on December 21st at 5 p.m. for our annual Christmas party.

The hall was beautifully decorated with greenery and colorful lights on the walls and a large Christmas tree at one side of the stage.

Dinner was served at 6:30 p.m. The buffet consisted of roast beef with all kinds of delicious vegetables and salads.

On the dessert table were many colorful cakes, cookies and candies.

After the meal, a short business meeting was held during which our District Youth Counselor Susan Bohnenberger installed the officers for 1994.

Everyone—adults and youth— enjoyed several games of bunco. What a pleasant sight to see young and old mingle at the bunco table.

This was an evening of great fellowship.

Sewing Circle Reports on December Activities Ennis

The Ennis Sewing Circle met on December 9th, with 31 members and four guests present. Our guests were Frank Laznovsky, Wesley Tupy, Joe Vlk and Charles Kosarek.

President Sadie Kubin called the meet-

ing to order and welcomed everyone.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, followed by a few moments of silence in memory of George Prochaska.

Secretary Linda Trojacek read the minutes and Treasurer Mildred Trojacek gave the financial report. Both reports were approved as read.

Sunshine Report

A Christmas greeting was sent to each sister who is unable to attend the meetings. A get-well card was sent to Sister Bessie Taraba and a sympathy card was sent to Sister Genevieve Prochaska.

Sister Hattie Moucka will be our assistant Sunshine Chairperson. Sister Vlasta Laznovsky will continue to be the Assistant Secretary.

We extend our sincere sympathy to Sister Genevieve Prochaska, whose brother, George Prochaska, passed away and to Sister Vickie Kohn and family, whose mother, Mary R. Trojacek, passed away.

A speedy recovery is wished to Sister Bessie Taraba.

Sisters Albie Nesuda, Annie Kostak, Mary Kopecek and Bessie Taraba wished everyone in the Circle a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to the December birthday celebrants.

The quilters did not do any quilting since it was Christmas. They deserve a day off. If anyone would like to have a quilt quilted, please call Sister Rose Bednar.

Donations Received

Hattie Moucka for having a quilt quilted; Anne Zvolanek for winning the quilt in November; Anne Zabojnik, coffee; and Adell Vlk, plastic knives and forks and the chocolate kisses.

A big "thanks" goes to the sisters who decorated the tables so beautifully. The sisters were Georgia Tupy, Sadie Kubin and Libbie Wisniewski. Also, thanks to the ones who helped arrange the tables and chairs.

Everyone enjoyed a delicious meal and the exchange of gifts. The officers received a money gift from the Circle.

The nice gift was greatly appreciated.

CONGRATULATIONS: Sister Hattie Moucka has a new great-granddaughter.

Sister Vickie and Jerry Kohn, who became grandparents of Alexander Hudson Kohn. The proud parents are Gary and Shelly. Little Alexander was only eight days old when his great-grandmother, Mrs. Mary R. Trojacek, died.

Life must go on—one passes away and one is born.

Bill Foit, husband of Sister Doris Foit, spent quite some time in the hospital recently. The last report I had on his condition was that he was still in pain. Hope you are feeling better, Bill. It does take time to recuperate after surgery.

Stephen Prachyl of Cleveland, Ohio, had a nice visit with his parents from Thanksgiving through christmas. Sister Dorothy Prachyl is his mother. Sister Ade11 and Joe Vlk were very happy when their grandson, Stephen Lingberg,

returned home from cold, cold Siberia, Russia, where he served as a CPA for his company from August until Christmas.

He reported that the temperature got down to 35 degrees below zero. Brr-rr, that's cold! The world's "cold pole" is in Siberia, where January temperatures average minus 60 degrees Fahrenheit— the coldest in the world.

Rest Home No. 1, Taylor Celebrates the Holiday Season

S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1 residents and staff held their Christmas party during the last week in December. Mr. Woody Richards, administrator, welcomed the guests and emceed the program. Mrs. Helen Scott sang a lovely gospel song, followed by a performance by "The Country Cousins Band" under the direction of Mrs. Phyllis Carlow.

The band played a medley of songs, including "Here Comes Santa Claus," during which time Santa presented

candy and gifts from under the Christmas tree.

Refreshments, including chicken salad sandwiches, chips, dips, candycoated pretzels and punch were served

by Elsie Flink, Demetra Shiller, Agnes Prikyl, Mary Ann Stouffer, Cecilia Hannan, Silvia Holton and Mrs. Kovar.

Mrs. Kovar (AD) thanks all of the people and organizations who made their Christmas a blessed and happy one this year.

Youth Letters Section District Six Leader Recalls Visit to Houston Space Center Dear Vestnik Readers, On July 7th, the youth members of District Six, along with their parents, spent an educational day for their annual District Six SPJST Summer Educational Tour to the Space Center Houston.

The tour day and activities were under the direction of District Six Youth Counselor Marcy Dorotik and Assistant Youth Counselor Karen Kaspar.

Youth members and adults from lodges in District Six participating in the day's Space Center tour were East Bernard, No. 28; Hallettsville, No. 4; El Campo-Hillje, No. 40, and Taiton, No. 30.

After the day's touring of the Space Center Houston, youth members and adults concluded the SPJST District Six Summer Tour Day with all stopping at Chili's Restaurant for supper before returning to El Camp that night.

Upon arriving at the Space Center, all SPJST youth and adults first went on the NASA Tram tour which showed the Johnson Space Center facilities, including areas where astronauts are trained and spacecraft are tested.

After a picnic lunch outside, everyone divided into smaller groups to view and experience the many areas of the Space Center. Attractions included a shuttle mock-up, computer simulators to retrieve or land a shuttle, and trying on real space helmets.

Youth members and adults enjoyed film presentations in the Space Center Theater and Starship Gallery. Features included "To Be An Astronaut," and "On Human Destiny." Also on display were actual astronaut suits used in the United State's exploration of space along with portraits of the men and women who wore them. The Starship Gallery also featured the lunar rover trainer, moon rock, and various space capsules along with the Skylab trainer.

Another area of the Space Center visited was the Mission Status Center which provided an up-to-date briefing on the happenings at NASA at the particular time in session.

Dear District Five Youth Members and Readers, The District Five youth members and their families attended the Christmas pageant, "Angel Wings," on Saturday, December 4. This was a two-act play at the United Methodist Church in Pasadena, Texas. The story is about two small angels who return to earth, so Lucy the 12-year-old can finally earn her angel's wings. She is assisted by George, who is about five years old. The story is very interesting and the scenery was just beautiful. The play was full of very pretty Christmas music.

After the play, we all went to the Pizza Hut. Thank you, Mrs. Stayton, you are truly a great DYC and we all love you very much.

88, Houston Youth Club Visits Shriners Hospital

Lodge

Dear Youth Club Members and Readers, Tuesday, December 21 was a very busy day for our youth club. On Tuesday morning, we had 28 youth and fie adults visit the children at the Shriners Hospital.

This is a charity hospital and the director spoke to us about some of the different reasons that the children are brought to this hospital for surgery. They were very happy to see us. We each brought a stuffed animal and we let the children pick out the toy they would like. This brought smiles to their faces.

On Tuesday evening, we had our youth Christmas party in the dining room.

We had a large variety of food to eat. We also enjoyed the games that Assistant Youth Leader Zalesky and Bender had for us to play so we could exchange our gifts.

Thank you, Mrs. Linney, Mrs. Zalesky and Mrs. Bender for the pretty Christmas ornaments that you all gave us for Christmas. This is something I will always treasure when I put it on the Christmas tree each year.

24, Cyclone Youth Club Reports on January Meeting Lodge

Dear Readers, The January 9, 1994 meeting of the Lodge No. 24 Youth Club was called to order at 2 p.m. by President Danny Baker.

Jeffrey Ashcraft led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

The register was rad. There were 12 members, eight adults and seven guests present. Harold Vanicek gave the treasurer's report. The meeting was adjourned at 2:45 p.m. Afterwards we enjoyed cookies and punch and made Valentines.

Happy Birthday to Kate Jahns (January 10), Allison Eixman(January 27), and Harold Vanicek (January 16).

We want to say Goodbye and thanks to our youth leader, Shirley Ashcraft.

Dear Readers, The January 2, 1994 meeting of the Lodge 47 Youth Club was called to order at 2:45 p.m. by Vice President E.J. Pechal. Jason Smith led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and club motto.

The minutes were read and approved.

Melanie Koslovsky gave the treasurer's report and balance.

We started out the new year with a new youth leader and assistant. Our leader is Ginger Greger and her assistant is Donna Baca. Ginger discussed ways on making a successful youth club work.

She reported on upcoming events: District Two Youth Achievement Day July 10, Camp - July 23-29, State Royalty and Youth Achievement Day - August 6 and 7. She also reported that that the camp T-shirt contest deadline is January 31st. Everyone be sure and get their entries in.

We had 21 members, one visitor, three adults and one new member at this meeting. Welcome, Megan, to the Lodge 47 Youth Club.

Door prizes were won by Lori Greger and Jason Smith. Birthday celebrants in January are Heath Novosad and Jennifer Pechal.

Ukazkou je obec Javofieko, ktera byla 5.5.45 vypalena fagisty a k morayskemu narodu se hlasi 71% obyvatel. V celem olomouckem okresu pouze 71 ad' nedosallo klausule 20% proti 175 °beim, ktere ji pini. Okres Olomouc je tedy osidlen "pfevalne33 Moravany a nikoliv Cechy a je nutno jej jako morays147 chapati.

-Koncem roku 1992 zemiel bkvaVI kapelnik a aktivni hudebnik Kmochovy hudby Josef Novak.

-14.ledna 1993 natdeela Kmochova hudba profilov* pofad v CT Ostrava.

1) The verbs jit, jet are imperfective,

but the only possible future forms are pujdu, pojedu (never budu jit, budu jet!). In the past they drop the prefix gel jsem, jel jsem. But the verbs prijit (to come) and pfijet (to arrive) have the prefix already in the infinitive, so they keep it in the future (ptijdu, pfijedu) and in the past as well (pti gel jsem, phjel jsem).

2. The Noun in Czech.

All Czech nouns are classified as being either masculine, feminine or neuter. If they end in a hard or neutral consonant, they are classed as masculine; if they end in "a" they are feminine, and if they end in "o", they are neuter. Therefore, the noun "park" is masculine, "lampa" feminine and "okno" neuter.

3. The Demonstrative Adjectives The demonstrative adjective "that" is translated in Czech by TEN, TA, TO. TEN is always used with masculine nouns; TA with feminine and TO with neuter.

Homework 1. Copy the expressions and vocabulary into a notebook and memorize them.

2. Memorize the conjugation of miti "to have."

3. Classify the nouns that are given in the vocabulary as to their gender.

4. Place the correct demonstrative adjective ten, ta, to before each noun in the vocabulary. Example: ten park, ta lampa, to okno. ***
