1993 figures overshadowing 1992 production

SPJST Congratulates November Top Producers The November 1993 production figures are showing that the SPJST will he assured of having a very productive year.

The SPJST's all volunteer sales force has recruited almost 300 more members this year than in 1992. This is an outstanding achievement.

We have written $6.5 million more insurance than the same period last year.

Because of all this sales activity, many lodges will receive cash bonuses through the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program. Our hope is that all lodges lake advantage of this program to increase their income.

I want to give special recognition to our top sales representatives in each district. They are doing an outstanding job for our society. In November, four districts had one sales representative who produced hoth the most earned premium and applications: District Two - Albin Machu; District Four - Martha Broz; District Six - Charles Garrett; and District Seven - Jarolyn Popp.

It takes a very dedicated person to consistently produce the members we need for our SPJST to be successful. To these people, we extend a grateful.

On pages 8 and 9 of this week's Vestnik, you'll find an excerpt from the recent book, "Czech Voices," by Clinton Machann and James W. Mendl. I recently had a chance to read the book and was captivated by the tales told by early Texas Czech emigrants. The original stories first appeared more than 100 years ago and were published in the Amerikan narodni 'calendar Although I've never been much of a Civil War buff, I found the story which appears in today's Vestnik particularly enlightening. For me, it revealed a whole new dimension of the Civil War as it related to our early Texas settlers. I hope that you find it equally enjoying.

Message to Our New Readers ...

While we're on the subject of "growth," it stands to reason that we probably have some new readers with questions about their participation in lodge meetings and activities. For that reason, the following information is directed primarily at our new members: Whether you know it or not, under our state laws, the meetings and fraternal activities of our local lodges are basic qualifications that all fraternal benefit societies must meet. Maintaining an active lodge system is one of the cornerstones of the entire fraternal system.

According to our by-laws, individual lodges, "shall be independent units, whether incorporated or not, under the control of the Supreme Lodge." Other than that, the by-laws are fairly unspecific when it comes to addressing the format for holding regular lodge meetings. This, typically, has been a matter left to each individual lodge.

First, it shows that our Society is growing. Growth, whether it is reflected by an increase in membership or by an increase in assets, are the two of the most important measures of health in any organization or business.

Second, it indicates that the Lodge Incentive and Recognition Program implemented last spring is working. The program rewards lodges with cash bonuses for enrolling new members and for completing various fraternal activities.

Finally, the inrease is significant in that it reflects well on the SPJST's volunteer sales force. In recent years, fraternal societies all over the country have phased out their volunteer sales forces, opting instead to enlist full-time insurance sales representatives. The SPJST has been able to maintain its volunteer sales force thanks to our members' ability to secure new prospects and inform them of the many benefits of members in the SPJST. ***

From the Secretary-Treasurer's Office SPJST Mortgage Modification Program .The Supreme Lodge has approved an alternative to refinancing. If you have a high interest rate, owner-occupied residential or owner-operated farm mortgage with the SPJST, you can now get your interest rate decreased with a minimum of paperwork and at a reduced cost if you act before January.

The modified interest rate is determined by the remaining term of your mortgage. -The new rates are: 7 years or less over 7 years to 15 years over 15 to 20 years

The modification fee is the greater of $400 or 1 percent of the current principal balance. A portion of the modification fee may be added on to the principal balance, but a minimum of $300 must be paid with your request. No new survey or approval is required.

The reduced paperwork consists of a written request submitted with the fee, acknowledging normal federal disclosures and a one-page modification agreement. New coupons and a new amortization schedule are then furnished.

The monthly payment can be left unchanged in which case the mortgage will mature earlier than scheduled; other-

wise, the payment can he recalculated to the maturity of the remaining mortgage balance at the reduced rate which will reduce the amount of payment and leave the maturity term the same.

The maturity of the loan cannot be extended beyond the present loan maturity date, but it may be shortened.

To be eligible, your mortgage with the SPJST must be an owner-occupied residence or an owner-operated farm. Other qualifications include continuous in-force SPJST membership, current payment of taxes and installments, hazard insurance in force and full compliance with other loan requirements. All persons who sigr.ed the original note must also sign the modification agreement.

This modification program expires on January 12, 1993 and can be changed or withdrawn, but once your modification is approved, the lower interest rate will prevail for the remaining term of your loan.

The SPJST also offers the traditional full refinancing of mortgages.

A. Zero or little growth in active membership. If you are finding a hard time getting members to actively participate, it may be time to examine your lodge's "comfort factor."

Q. What steps can we take to combat complacency at our lodge?

A. Set a goal for your lodge to till a need in your community. What needs to be done in your community to make it a better place for all who live there?

Q. Who organizes this purpose?

A. As a Team, your local lodge officers are the organizers of your lodge's purpose.

Leadership is fundamental in combatting the "comfort factor." Support for the leadership in your lodge is also essential.

Q. What if everyone does not agree on the decisions that are made?

A. Brotherhood. Benevolence.

Humanity. These three words unite us in a way that surpasses difference of opinion. Differences in opinion should always lead to a better understanding of how to achieve your lodge goals.

Q. We have found our purpose, our team of leaders is in place, what then?

A. Campaign. Campaign for new members, campaign for active members, believe in what you are doing and your purpose. Create enthusiasm, use imagination and be creative! You have the ability to be successful!

For their efforts, lodges participating in the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program are working to achieve one of four lodge awards—The Gold Star Award, The Silver Star Award, The Bronze Star Award and Honorable Mention. The awards each of which is accompanied by a cash award, will be presented at a Statewide Recognition Banquet to be held in conjunction with the 1994 Annual Local Lodge Workshop.

Also, the Youth Club will will be selling chances on a quilt donated to them by Florence Frazier, a hat decorated for Christmas, and also a candy dish. They are still undecided on a Christmas party. Their cake walk was successful.

Birthday wishes were extended to Christopher Pavelka and Florence Frazier The Sunshine Committee reported that no one was on the sick list.

There was no unfinished or old business.

Under new business, Vernon Wood reported that some correspondence would be posted on the bulletin board for the membership to read.

The adult door prize was won by Nelda Anderson and the youth door prize was won by Kristi Necessary.

A motion was made by Vernon Wood and seconded by Gene Kelley to turn the meeting over to the Nominating Committee, that officers elected to hold offices in SPJST should hold the same offices in Elk Hall, Inc., and all nominations cease. All these motions carried.

All uncontested offices were accepted by acclamation.

Nancy Milner Our lodge will be making a trip to the local nursing home on December 19 with bags of Christmas goodies (approved by the home.) We will meet on the 19th at 1 p.m. to package the goodies.

Last, but not least, our turkey bakers for the dinner were Donna Jones, Carol Petty, Linda Gaas, Shirley Urbanosky, Winifred Surovik, Lydia Odstricil and Connie Mantey. Most of these ladies were also part of the clean-up crew. I would like to thank them—especially Martha Trcalek and Gladys Hejl. I also want to thank the many ladies who brought desserts.

Our next meeting will be on January 2nd at 2 p.m.

35, Elk Reports on November Meeting Lodge

The meeting was called to order by President Henry Breitkreutz on November 14, 1993.

The Pledge of Allegiance was ied by Holly Dennis and Christopher Pavelka.

The minutes from our last meeting were read by Virlene Kelley. There was one correction. The nominating commit tee was not the same as the one from the previous year. They were then approved.

The treasurer's report, given by Nancy Miler, was approved as read.

Barbara Pavelka gave the youth report.

There were nine members, two adults, and one social member present at their meeting. She reported that the Halloween party and hayride had turned out well. Plans are under way to participate in the Christmas on the Avenue in Mart, Texas. The members will donate

Lodge 84, Dallas Hosting Charity Ball, Christmas Party and New Year's Dance Gee, Thanksgiving has passed and Christmas is here. Have you done your Christmas shopping? Have you found your "new stuffed toy" for our Charity Ball?

If you have not heard, Lodge 84 is having a Charity Ball on December 18.

Admission to the dance will be a new stuffed toy and a half-priced ticket. All of the stuffed toys will he delivered to Parkland Hospital for the Children's Center. So, come and bring a stuffed toy—make a little child happy as well as enjoy an evening of music and dance presented by the Ennis Czech Orchestra.

Doors will open at 7 p.m. Music will he from 8:30 until 12:30 p.m.

Sunday, December 19 is our Christmas Party. The doors will open at 4 p.m. Dinner will he served at 5:30 p.m. The installation of 1994 officer and a holiday program will follow. Then, our friend from the North Pole will come so see us to bring us goodies for the children.

All are asked to bring canned foods to fill baskets for our unfortunate fellow men. Members are asked to bring a side dish and a dessert for the dinner. Let's all make an effort to come out and share our CHRISTMAS SPIRIT with everyone.

133, San Antonio Reports on November Meeting Lodge

At 12:40 pit. all in attendance recited the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag, followed by grace before the meal. Fortyfour members and seven guests enjoyed a turkey and dressing Thanksgiving dinner.

Brother Jim Kostelnik, who is 94 years old and one of the oldest members of Lodge 133, was also in attendance.

The meeting was called to order at 1:45 p.m. Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar was introduced to the members by President Jarolyn Popp.

107, Floresville Reports on November Meeting

Lodge

Members of SPJST Lodge 107, Floresville met at the hall on November 7, 1993 at 3 p.m.

The meeting was called to order by President Bayer. The Pledge of Allegiance was repeated by all members.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved as read.

Cy Welden Pavliska was reported to be recuperating after an appendectomy.

The-membership was saddened by the loss of our member, Svoboda.

This summer she had been recognized as a 75-year member. Our sympathy goes out to the family.

President Bayer reported on our standing in regards to the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program. We have until December 31 to get more members.

Reports were given on the District Seven Family Fun Day and the Peanut Festival booth. Assistant Youth Leader Cheryl Morrisey gave a report on the club's trip to Fiesta Texas. Kara, their daughter, was on a dance team that performed at the Texas Fraternal Congress.

The Morriseys attended the Congress and praised the talent shown by the SPJST youth.

Several items that need to he done around the hall were brought up. A work day is on the planning hoard.

Our next meeting will be on December 12. This will also he the day of our Christmas social. We will have the election of officers, followed by a covered dish dinner. Each family is asked to bring a meat, vegetable and/or dessert for the meal. The lodge will furnish the drinks.

Reporter Mila Phelps also gave their reports. Sister Agnes Popp was reported not feeling well. Sister Evelyn Matula gave a report on Jaroslav and Marcella Kleprlik. No deaths were reported.

The Nominating Committee made their report. The nominees for officers for 1994 were Jarolyn Popp for president; 'William Pavliska for vice president and Margie Schauffele for secretary-treasurer. All nominees were elected by acclamation.

There will be a Christmas dinner served at 12:30 p.m. on December 19.

All members are asked to bring a covered dish and a dessert. The ham will be provided by the lodge.

President Leshikar delivered a very interesting and informative message. He stated that the SPJST was organized in 1897 and that the founding fathers did not cease working for the insurance and that every preceding generation must keep going forward. He stated that fraternal insurance is good for communities and that projects such as the 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive are very helpful to the youth. There were 84 scholarships awarded in 1992.

He complimented the officers, past officers, and all of the members on their attendance and reminded them about the 100th Anniversary of the SPJST in 1997 which will be observed with a three-day event. In closing, he stated that FREEDOM is the greatest thing to be thankful for.

172, Pasadena to Host Covered Dish Supper and Meeting on December 15 Lodge

Dear Members, Please note that our December regular monthly meeting will he held on

Texas Czechs Impress European Visitors During their last trip to the Czech Republic, Victor and Evelyn Janak of Lodge 88, Houston, invited us to visit them in Texas. There were three of us: Luhomir Pechl, Filip Petr and I, Jiri Bruchanov and we are all associated with the touring service INTERESANT of Zdar nad Sazavou. Little did we imagine what great beauties and interesting things we would see on our circuitous trip through Central Texas. All in all, our four week visit cannot compare with anything we have experienced before.

Within a period of ten days in Houston, we visited several points of interest that left unforgettable impressions. This included a tour of NASA. Everything about it was astounding.

We are not accustomed to the heat and humidity of Texas summers, so our trip to Dallas was made bearable in the comfort of the air-conditioned car. The skyscrapers of Dallas were architecturally outstanding. While there, we met with members of Lodge 21 and showed them our films of Prague, the castles of the old country and of social gatherings and of several village celebrations.

Our day ended with the journey to West, the center of many Czech publications and on to Clifton where we visited the African Safari Park. In Waco, we were pleasantly surprised to see exhibits pertaining to the settlements in the New World Temple was our next stop. We were introduced to the members of the

SPJST Supreme Lodge and were impressed with the system and the way the personal insurance business is conducted. The trip also included a visit to the Vesinik office, the viewing of the historical collections in the museum that portray the life of the early settlers and the very large library of precious books and documents. The library tour which was conducted by the gracious librarian (Dorothy Pechal) was especially impressive.

We never could have pictured the beauty of Austin and the University of Texas with its 40,000 students. We took many pictures here—especially from the UT Tower, to show the expanse of Central Texas.

Johnson City with its Johnson Ranch, Fredricksburg, and the Admiral Nimittz Museum are all significant to Texas Czechs. San Antonio with its Alamo and the central river bordered by all kinds of historical and business enterprises show how several different ethnic groups can cooperate.

Of course, Shiner was another stop where we found Czech spoken—especially over a good cold pivo.

We covered a total of about 1,200 miles or about 1,800 kilometers on our Texas trip. It was a trip that we shall never forget and we wholeheartedly thank the Janaks for their hospitality and journeys throughout Texas.

Christi Circle of Women Report on Activities Corpus

President Kathy Marek led us in the Pledge of Allegiance at our final meeting for 1993 held Thursday, December 2.

We had a very short meeting, finalizing plans for our December 7 trip to view the whopping cranes. A letter from the Department of Human Services was read, thanking us for the school supplies that we donated for foster children. We then sang Happy Birthday to Lillian Coville, Milly Elzner, Carrie Veselka and Leona Matula before adjourning for a fast trip to the Old Country Buffet for lunch.

Twenty-five of us enjoyed a pleasant meal and a variety of drinks and desserts.

Eating out was fun for a change,but the food prepared by our own members is better.

We returned to Sokol for a brain teasing quiz of Christmas synonyms. Each lady was handed a list of 22 common Christmas sayings or songs to be "translate." For example, "Jovial yuletide desired for the second person singular or plural by us." The answer is at the end of this report. Helen Pavelka was the winner with fourteen answers. But, in all fairness, Helen had a head start on some of the ladies who were late returning.

She received a large magnetic plastic needlepoint and candy cane that I made to decorate her refrigerator for Christmas.

Millie Elzner was the winner of the drawing for the lovely Afghan donated

by Anne Spencer. Ninety-two dollars was made from this project.

What

Helen Sacky donated an especially beautiful crochet scarf won by Georgie Kubala. Helen Pavelka won a Christmas mug brought by Betty Jurica and Leona Matula won a calendar Betty brought.

Mary Elzner donated a wicker Christmas duck won by Della Elzner and Leona Matula brought the red bird potted plant won by Lillian Coville.

Kathy Marek gave each of us a beautiful Christmas ornament she made and her mother, Betty Jurica, brought homemade Christmas cookies for us to enjoy. Millie Elzner presented each lady with a Czech Christmas card that Jerry had purchased in the Czech Republic, and I gave a handmade coaster to each member.

When Jerry came to pick up Millie, we presented him with a Certificate of Appreciation for all of his help and support. His latest effort on our behalf is the rental of a van for December 7 and obtaining information on tour boats. We will meet at Sokol at 8 a.m. and the boat leaves Rockport at 12:30 p.m. Thanks from all of us, Jerry.

Community College to Offer Conversational Czech Austin

A Conversational Czech I class is being offered at Austin Community College in Austin, Texas, beginning January 25, running through March 10, 1994. The class will meet on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Reagan Campus. Anyone interested in learning Czech will be interested in taking this course. The A.M. Best Company, an independent financial rating service, in 1993, assigned a rating of A (Excellent) to the SPJST. The "A" rating is assigned to institutions that have "achieved excellent overall performance when compared to the standards established by the A.M. Best Company."

The SPJST, on an annual basis, voluntarily submits itself to the scrutiny of the A.M. Best Company. With this "A" rating, according to Supreme Lodge Vice President Gebala, the SPJST emerged as the top-ranked fraternal benefit society domiciled in the State of Texas, as rated by the A.M. The rating, according to information received from the rating company, was assigned after a thorough review of the the SPJST's sworn annual financial statement as filed with the Insurance

Josef L. Leg ikar describes himself as "the originator of the emigra-

tion of our people ... to Texas." One might argue that this description could be applied more justly to the Rev. Arnost Bergman, who began to write enthusiastic letters to his friends and pamphleteers in Europe, urging them to immigrate to Texas, soon after he arrived at the village of Cat Spring, Austin County, in March of 1850. In fact, it was really the combination of Bergman's letters and Le g ikar's organizational efforts that led to the exodus of Czech laborers, artisans, and small farmers from an isolated, poor corner of eastern Bohemia to a distant, undeveloped state in the American Southwest.

Legikar's irrepressible optimism about America, in spite of his troubled life, is one version of the "pioneer spirit" typical of many

American immigrants. At the same time, his allusions to his wife's reluctance to emigrate and her ambivalent attitude toward their new home remind the reader of a different perspective. In spite of his meager formal education, Le g ikar was a self-taught intellectual and a political activist, caught up in the revivalist spirit of Czech nationalism that was taking place in his homeland. He nevertheless whole heartedly adopted America as his new home, and he reports nostalgia only for Czech literature. . . .1 knew something about free America, but the question was, how much money would it take to get there? For similar reasons, many others in our village at that time were thinking of immigrating, mainly to the Banat region of Hungary. I didn't agree with that idea, however, because of the unhealthy land in that region, the crude and uneducated people there, and, finally, because, after their unsuccessful revolution, the Hungarians hated the Slays and Germans and would give them all kinds of trouble.

My warnings might not have been convincing, had not a copy of a letter by a certain Protestant minister named E. Bergman fallen into my hands by chance. Bergman had emigrated from Stroti4, Prussian Silesia, to Cat Spring, Texas, and had written from there to a man by the name of Kalacny, one of his friends in Stroulq, advising him to follow.

He described the cost of a trip, outfitted by Valentill, from Hamburg to Texas; what kind of food and services would be available on hoard the ship; what the countryside was like over there; and the people and how they made a living. I told those who wanted to go to the Banat about the letter and that I had decided to move 'my family to Texas.

tions from someone who had firsthand experience. So Bergman's letter was published word for word in the Morayske noviny, which Kla'cel edited. In this way, news about Texas, in America was spread all over Moravia in detail. The result was a general emigration from eastern Moravia to Texas from Vsetin, Vyzovice, and the area around there. So I consider myself the originator of the emigration of our people from here to Texas, and I don't think anyone can challenge that.

In 1853, my wife finally decided to emigrate, for the benefit of my grown sons. It was difficult because my oldest son was already over the age of twenty and thus liable for military service. This was troubling because he would not be allowed to go to America. However, due to the intervention of Count Norbert Poeting of the Lancg kroun district, a good friend of mine, he was judged unsuitable for service by the military doctor and released.

Now it was full steam ahead. Seventeen other families prepared to go with us, and on the 9th of October, 1853, we left our home. At the beginning of November, we boarded the ship Sava, on which we had to wait for fourteen days in Grag, and on Christ's birthday we arrived in Galveston. Our voyage across the ocean lasted about seven weeks. On the whole, it was pleasant, and the supplies from Bedeker in Bremen were good enough. We considered ourselves lucky compared with those who had gone before us. After a short stay in Galveston, we were taken by steamboat to Houston, and from there into the interior by slow-moving oxcart. (There were no railroads at that time, and Texas was not like it is today.) The trip lasted fourteen days and was about sixty miles long. So our complete pilgrimage lasted about fourteen weeks.

We finally came upon the remnants of our suffering countrymen near New Ulm. Several of them were working there. About four families had hurriedly built a log cabin in which they lived collectively. It had burned, however, and they had lost everything that they hadn't lost on the trip. Yet their spirits hadn't fallen. They were hopeful about the future, and almost all of them eventually became prosperous citizens.

My wife was not at all pleased by the trip to Texas and the meeting with our countrymen. She grew silent and melancholy; however, I found comfort in freedom.

We found employment for our children, and my wife and I lived with one of our friends, who, after the fire, had built a rather shabby cabin. He was Karel 'Siller, who now lies in his grave. May he rest in peace. In 1854, a certain Czech-German fellow and I bought an unfinished farmstead and we lived together on that godforsaken place for two years.

In truth, it was not an enviable way of life, so we divided the land, and I got the part without a building or cultivated land. I started to do carpentry work with my two oldest sons, and by Christmas of 1856, I was under my own roof. Everyone knows that things are always hard in the beginning. I experienced this in the extreme: my partner and I had been swindled out of about seventy acres of the farm we had bought, and we owed a great deal on it. Due to lack of money, I bought a Mexican pony for riding, and he threw me off whenever and wherever he pleased. One time, he almost killed my wife. I bought a team of oxen, one of which was already entertaining the thought of passing from this world, and soon did go to see his father. Many things such as this happened to me during a very short period of time. The needy one always buys at the highest cost, especially when he buys on credit. So, when all is said and done, I got along at a snail's pace, but at least I got along.

I was going to apply for a passport and sell our little farm, but my wife did not want to leave her home village for an unknown country overseas. Since I didn't want to force her to move, we stayed on our little place. The other sixteen families embarked for Texas in the fall of 1851 from Hamburg. It was the first emigration from eastern Bohemia and Moravia, and nobody knew whether any Czechs at all had gone to America earlier, because the government carefully suppressed all news of immigration to America. They also placed all kinds of restrictions on it.

In Hamburg, our poor emigrants fell into the hands of a Jew named Hirman, who gave them a contract via England to Liverpool. But there they were given another contract. They received uncooked food, moldy and rotten and every family had to cook for itself. Their ship, the Victoria, was already crowded with Irish emigrants.

Because of these conditions, half our emigrants died during the seventeen-week voyage.

For almost a whole year we heard nothing about our unfortunate countrymen.

Only in September of 1852 did we receive the had news of their sad fate. And then the correspondence began. In the meantime I had been corresponding occasionally with our dear Klacel, mainly about emigration. He continued to encourage me, and I was able to pass on everything to him so he could publish it in his newspaper. That way someone who was going to make the passage could find out about current condi-

As I said before, in those days Texas wasn't like it is today. Nice buildings were not to be seen, only log cabins,which did not contain a single nail. In place of windows there were only holes. A door was knocked together from some pieces of wood or some kind of fabric. Boards and other necessary items were scarce. In our whole settlement there was only half a wagon full. It was many years before I was able to get that kind of material. But during that time I didn't for one minute get homesick for my former homeland, because that would have done neither her nor me any good. The freedom and liberty here cheered me up, for I wasn't one of those many people who, I would say, are immature, who are always holding on tightly to their mother's apron strings and screaming, "Mother, Mother, Our Mother!" Still, even today, I honor and respect my native country.

Really, though, I've always been satisfied here, even in the cruel times of the Civil War. My situation has always been improving, and I haven't missed anything except our literature. I didn't even hope to live to see that sort of thing in America. I didn't know, though, that such a large number of our countrymen lived up north or that an active Czech press existed. All of a sudden, I got a letter from Jan Thirta LetovskY, who, I recall, was one of the first pioneers, telling of the Czech literature here. I still don't know how he found out about me in Texas, for we had never seen or heard about each other before. He told me that he was working on a campaign to start publishing a Czech newspaper up north. That was "Joy in Israel!" I rounded up twenty shareholders in my area and soon the first edition of Narodni noviny came from St. Louis. I was nailed their chief agent in Texas. However, they began imprudently and uncautiously. As a legal stockholder, I saw what consequences that might have and felt that an additional policy was needed in order to ensure the success of our newspaper. I advised that if they wanted to preserve our Narodni . noviny, it would be necessary at the beginning to stay out of controversy, to restrain political as well as religious opinions, in order to hold our people together, whatever their professed views and whether they identified with the free or the slave states. But it was all in vain.

Abraham Lincoln was announced as candidate for president in hold headlines under Old Glory and his complete program was described. That, and my name as agent, led many Americans and Germans to sniff it out. There were even some countrymen who, despite my warnings, let the slaveholders know what was in the paper.

Then my persecution and suffering began. I was denounced as the worst kind of abolitionist. The English and German newspapers publicly announced that I and Jan Reymershoffer, from Cat Spring, who had also become an agent for Ndrodni noviny by that time, must be hanged from the nearest oak tree. I was constantly afraid for my life then. Once about six of "the boys" came to see me. They were mainly Germans, and their leader was Arnost Knole. I met them with my head held high. Indeed, I had nothing to feel guilty about, and I got out of that mess all right.

I must add here, however, that the local Americans remained surreptitiously vigilant, but–Were not nearly as vicious as many of the German slaveholders were. It was a cruel time. Later on, even some of the Germans who were not necessarily abolitionists but only loyal Unionists were imprisoned, and many of these were even lynched. The uproar caused by the war was at its height then. Texas was cut off from the rest of the world, and there was no way to escape except through Mexico; and even that was very difficult to do. Everyone who could carry a weapon,without exception, had to go to war—from age eighteen to thirty-five. And, finally, up to age fifty. The older ones were forced to volunteer as so-called "minutemen."

There were hardly any white people around, except old men with gray hair, women, and children. Every male was under arms. They had to leave their land because of the war, and the war effort drained away their tax dollars and fodder, cotton, corn, and bacon. They summoned three of my sons together, declaring them volunteers. I finally freed the eldest, saying that he was past draft age. He had to serve in the militia, however. They would have caught the youngest one, but I went to General McCrudy and explained that he was not yet eighteen years old. He went to Mexico out of fear, and the poor boy died there as a result of tortuous work. So all three sons were taken from me. In addition to this worry, other cares occupied me, such as my farm work, my wife, and the family of my oldest son. But there was

I can't describe the state of my heart as I saw them off. I envisioned their wounded bodies, or even their corpses, which they were being forced to sacrifice to the preservation of slavery and the destruction of the Union. I can't describe the emotions which ruled over me at that time. Three days after my sons left, Tomas and Jan Votgpka,the two sons of my neighbors, joined the parade. It was a terrible mess. How can you hide from such a ferocious pack of wolves? Indeed, as I said earlier, because of the Czech newspaper, I was hated as a dangerous abolitionist, and it was clear to me what was going to happen.

The end of the war was nowhere in sight. In fact, I was afraid that slavery would win out in the end since English business interests gave it their financial and moral support. As the war raged around Vicksburg, our boys escaped injury, but when Vicksburg fell, the Confederate soldiers were captured. When they promised that they wouldn't fight against the Union any more, they were released to go home. The faithless majority of them immediately formed a regiment under a different name to fight against the Union, and they tried to force those who didn't want to fight anymore to go along. Then they started to hunt down those who didn't want to fight for the Confederacy. The bands of hunters wandered day and night across the countryside.

They conducted their hunt as if they were after wild animals, with dogs that had been used to catch runaway slaves. A pack of these hounds fell upon the wife of one of my sons. They tore at her dress and she would have been terribly hurt if help had not arrived in time. If this mob ever recognized a horse, saddle, or anything else belonging to the one they were hunting, they simply took it for themselves.

Most of all, they liked to invade a residence at night. and turn it inside out. I was treated to a good number of these visits because I was a reputed abolitionist. I was always afraid for my life. "Master Lynch" reigned supreme. My sons and their friends had to stay in the forests, hiding in the hollows of trees and thickets in both summer and winter, and in the rain, which is quite substantial here. They were barefoot and ragged; there wasn't much of anything that you could buy. Goods didn't arrive in Texas unless they came through Mexico, and they were very expensive. A simple woman's apron cost thirty dollars, a pair of slippers fifty dollars, and boots one hundred dollars. But a pound of cotton brought only seven cents, and in Confederate currency at that.

You had to sell your cotton to the government, because England traded the rebels' cotton for arms and other war materiel through Mexico. We had to wean ourselves from drinking coffee and eating pastries made from flour. We were very temperate in those days, but the Americans were a little better at it than we were. The black women and the older Americans knew from the old days how to weave cloth and dye material of all sorts. The blacks produced leather and made their own shoes. In this way, they were able to provide the most necessary items.

I can't describe what we experienced during those three years. Among other things, we were sure that if the Confederacy prevailed, all immigrants would have their property confiscated and that we would be driven from the land. People were shot at as though they were dogs. Once they shot at my son, but they missed him.

That's all that I was able to find out about it. All of this happened in a very short period of time, relative to one's life, but it seemed like eternity to me before I heard any more about him. I thought he was hurt very badly, but, luckily, he escaped serious danger. However, Tomas Vot;ipka, my neighbor's son, was shot and taken to jail, where he died, to the grief of his parents. But then came an even sadder catastrophe: their other son, Jan, was also caught and sentenced by a military court to death by a firing squad. Before the sentence could be carried out, however, he escaped, and he is alive and well today.

It's difficult for me to write any more about that horrible time—by no means have I run out of material. Let me just add that we got out of it in good health, and that is unusual, considering what we went through . .

In Memoriam Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 133, San Antonio, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sympathy to the family of our departed sister, GLORIA SELL, who passed away in Stankov, Republic on October 5, 1993. She was born in Czechoslovakia on September 9, 1924.

She met her husband when he was in the service. She was an active member of Lodge No. 133, San Antonio. She was also a member of Hermann Sons Widowed Persons Support Group. She taught Czech classes in San Antonio from 1985 through 1991 and worked with the Bexar County Czech Heritage Society.

She also worked in the Czech booth at the Folklife Festival.

Sister Sell is survived by two brothers, Jaromir and Jiri Polivk, who reside in Stankov, Czech Republic. Her body was cremated and the ashes will be returned to San Antonio for burial next to her husband, Raymond. Expression of Sympathy The members of SPJST Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje express their sympathy to the family of our departed brother: WILLIE PRAZAK, SR. Funeral services for Willie Prazak, Sr., 88, of Wharton, were held on August 13 from Holy Family Catholic Church with Rev. Joe Vrana officiating. Interment followed in the Holy Cross Memorial park Cemetery in El Campo. A rosary service was held on August 12 from Triska Funeral Home in El Campo.

Mr. Prazak died on August 11, 1993.

He was born on May 26, 1905 in Deanville to the late Matej and Teresa Fifer Prazak.

He married Vincencia Mader Prazak on November 8, 1927, in Caldwell. Mr. Prazak was a retired farmer and school custodian. He was a member of the SPJST Lodge in El Campo.

Survivors include his wife, Vincencia Prazak of Wharton; daughters, Josie Wendell of San Antonio and Winnie Judy Warner of Wharton; sons and daughtersin-law, Willie and Hazel Prazak, Jr. of Wharton and Matthew and Louise Praza of Angleton; sisters, Matilda Faust of Caldwell and Betty Fisher of Fort Worth; brother, Albin Prazak of Caldwell; 16 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were John Warner, Jim Warner, Edwin Prazak, James Prazak, Michael Prazak and Melvin Wendell.

Mrs. Schroeder was born on January 19,1921 in Westphalia and lived in the Tours-Leroy area since 1935. She was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West, SPJST Lodge No. 6 in Cottonwood, the L.T.G. Volunteer Fire Department and Geneva Hall.

Mrs. Schroeder was the daughter of Jon and Clara Straten Roessler. She married Frank Schroeder on August 15, 1942. She is preceded in death by an infant son, who died February 12, 1957.

Mrs. Schroeder is survived by her husband, Frank Schroeder of Leroy; four daughters, Mrs. Bobby (Cecilia) Soukup of Asa, Mrs. Charles (Mary Jane) Icke of San Antonio, Mrs. Larry (Nancy) Kallus of Leroy and Mrs. Ernie (Dianne) Reed of Hallsburg; three brothers, Henry Roessler and Johnny Roessler, both of Tours and Herman Roessler of Waco; two sisters, Mary Podsednik of Fort Worth and Mrs. Odelle (Ann) Gerik of Temple; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may he made to the American Diabetes Association or the Home Health Care Services of West Community Hospital.

Sister Reisner was born on September 10, 1918 in Brenham, Texas: She as a retired bookkeeper. She was a member of St. Monica Catholic Church, SPJST Lodge No. 15, Buckholts, R.V.O.S. Lodge No. 13 of Marak and a member of the St. Monica Alter Society and Cameron senior Citizens Center.

A rosary was recited on November 5 at the Marek-Burns-Layewell Funeral Home in Cameron.

Services for Sister Reisner were held o'h November 6 at the St. Monica Catholic Church in Cameron with Father Tom Hanus officiating.

Entombment was in the St. Monica Mausoleum.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Reisner, in 1977 and by a sister, Mary Baranowski, in 1977.

Survivors are two sons: Edward Reisner of Temple and Frankie Joe Reisner of Aurora, Colorado; a daughter, Martha (Reisner) Davenport of Temple; one brother, Max Baranowski of Brenham; five grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the St. Monica Altar Society.

We, the officers and members of Lodge No. 18, Elgin, Texas, express their heartfelt sympathy and condolences to the family and friends of CHARLIE A HAISLER, age 81, of Manor, formerly of Coupland, who died Wednesday, November 3, 1993 in Austin.

Mr. haisler was born on June 20, 1912, in Elgin, the son of Joe John Haisler and Minnie Mogonye Haisler. On February 1, 1948, he was married to Emma A. Steger at St. Johns, Richland Community.

He served in WWII with the U.S. Navy Seabees. He was a member of the American Legion, Taylor; SPJST Lodge No. 18, Elgin; and Sons of Hermann in Coupland. He•was a farmer all of his life and also worked for 21 years at the Travis State School. He was a member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Coupland.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Emma A. Haisler, in 1989, and one brother.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, November 6, 1993, at 2 p.m. at St. Peter's United Church of Christ at Coupland with the Reverend Charles Copeland officiating. Burial was in the St. Peter's United Church of Christ Cemetery. Condra Funeral Home of Taylor was in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include one daughter, Delores McCullough and husband, James of Garland; one son, Charles Haisler and wife, Eileen of Austin; two sisters, Alma Thiele, Lula Bretthauer, both of Austin; and one brother, Joe Haisler of Elgin; three grandchildren, Ryan McCullough, Chad McCullough and Aaron Kuehner.

Memorials may be made to the St. Peter's United Church of Christ at Coupland.

There were five members present. We decided to skip the treasurer's report and the secretary's report. Members congratulated Sharon Borak for winning first in the holiday ornament contest.

Under old business, it was discussed that the deadline for submitting entries to the tee-shirt contest is January 31st. Also, members were reminded to bring a gift to the Toys for Tots project for our gathering on December 5th.

After the meeting, we sat around, talked and ate dinner. The next meeting will be on January 6th at 7 p.m. in the Commercial State Bank Gold Room.

Being big didn't save the dinosaur.

Apparently, some insurance companies assume bigness will be the key to their survival.

In our opinion, that's a faulty assumption.

Witness the dinosaur. Being big didn't save him. In fact, it probably hastened his demise.

For the dinosaur, grew too large for his limited brain. As a result, signals took too

long to get from one part of the body to another. In the end, he simply couldn't respond quickly enough to change.
