Scholarship Drive Edging Up Towards Halfway Mark

In the days of our founders, they were willing to give--thanks for mighty little, for mighty little was all they expected. But now, neither government nor nature can give enough but what we think it too little. Those old boys in the fall of the year, if they could gather in a few pumpkins, potatoes and some corn for the winter, they were in a thanking mood.

If we can't gather in a new Buick, a new radio, a tuxedo and some government relief, why, we feel that the world is against us.

SPJST State Queen Valerie Roye of Lodge No. 30, Taiton and State King John Buri of Lodge No. 142, Houston made their third official appearance at Lodge 172's Seventh Annual Gulf Coast Czech Festival in Pasadena. The two spent the day meeting new friends and enjoying fellowship with other SPJST members. Thanks to the members of Lodge No. 172, Pasadena for their hospitality. Deep in the East of Texas I remember my first trip to the pinecanopied pasture lands of East Texas. It was about ten years ago, during the early spring-just as the wild orchids, azaleas, and passion flowers were starting to bloom. If you've never been, it's worth the trip from wherever you live. Last week, I had the chance to visit East Texas again and it was just as inspiring. The big attraction this time-in addition to the brilliant fall colors-was my visit to Lodge 191, Lufkin for their annual President's Ball.

This was my first visit to the lodge and, as first visits go, I didn't know what to expect. After last Saturday night, however, I must say that I was impressed.

At Lodge 191, membership definitely has its privileges.

The President's Ball, like so many of the dances and special events hosted by Lodge 191, catered exclusively to its lodge members and their invited guests.

In addition to hosting member-oriented activities, the lodge is a good neighbor to the community, periodically donating the use its facilities for various fund-raising efforts. The hall is also rented out to lots of local businesses for Christmas parties, dances and company functions.

Three area dance groups, The Pine Squares Dance Club, the Polka Dot Club, and the East Texas Cloggers, also use it regularly.

Since it was chartered in 1983, Lodge 191 has thrived. Its membership has grown to more than 175; it has acquired a lodge home; and lodge activities regularly attract and involve a high percentage of the total membership. What's more, all active lodge members-including officers and trustees-regularly donate their time and labor in the routine maintenance and support of the lodge. On the-evening I was there, members bussed their own tables and thoroughly cleaned the hall after the dance. With everybody pitching in, it only took about 15 minutes.

John and Helen. Anderson-serving as a team-were the first president(s) of Lodge 191. They worked hard and they worked smart to get the lodge going and headed in the right direction.

John, who has a background in personnel management, attributes the success of the lodge to "management by objectives."

What exactly does that mean?

According to Brother Anderson, it means that Lodge 191's fraternal program is tailor-made to fit the needs and draw upon the skills of its members.

When the organization was first set up, the founders of Lodge 191 established three broad objectives. First, they wanted a lodge hall where they could get together and socialize. Second, they wanted to be able to offer a schedule of activities that their members would enjoy. Third, they wanted Lodge 191 to be a family-oriented operation. Thanks to good planning, communication and teamwork, they have been able to achieve all three.

"For the completion of every successful event at Lodge 191, there has been someone who has been accountable," Brother Anderson explains. "We have a lot of good people who know how to get in there and get the work done. They do it because they are accountable."

A big part of being accountable at Lodge 191 is sitting down once a year and establishing a written list of goals and strategies for achieving them.

"Goals enable the members to see what direction the lodge is headed," says Brother Anderson."We've always taken great care to set realistic targets because it is by these targets that we will evaluate our success."

Evaluation is an extremely important part of Lodge 191's overall approach conducting business.

It provides the leadership with concrete information on the lodge's performance potential based on past experience. As a result, it makes future planning easier and more realistic.

Apparently, the planning process is paying off for Lodge 191. According to current lodge president(s) Bobby and Bobbie Lee Friday, the lodge will make its final payment on its lodge hall next spring-seven years ahead of schedule.

Based on what I saw and the members I talked to, Lodge .191 is on the right track. Still, just like most lodges out there, they've got their share of challenges. Something else they have is "vision," Just as they are able to identify their problems, the leadership of Lodge 191 is also gifted with the ability to see the wonderful opportunities afforded through the fraternal lodge system. *** Be On the Lookout for This Man Residents of Czech descent living in South Central Texas and the Coastal Bend Region may want to be on the lookout for Sean Gallup this fall and winter.

Sean is a student at the University of Texas at Austin and he is working on his master's thesis, an ambitious project chronicling the life and times of Texas Czechs. For the next five months or so he'll have his base of operations set up in Fayetteville. Next spring, his travels will take him to points scattered throughout North and West Texas.

I had a chance to have lunch with Sean last week and was encouraged by the degree of dedication he is bringing to this project. Although not of Czech descent, he has lived in Czechoslovakia where he taught English to Czech students.

NFCA Model Code Update

Recent Memorial Scholarship Donors Posted

I would like to update our members on a proposed change in the fraternal insurance code governing rules and regulations, as presented to the Texas Fraternal Societies, by the Law Committee of the National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA).

In the State of Texas Insurance Code, fraternal benefit societies have a section called Chapter 10. Chapter 10 states what rules and regulations fraternal benefit societies will follow in conducting business in the State of Texas.

Members of the NFCA Law Committee made a proposal to the fraternals domiciled in Texas to encourage them to adopt a regulatory code called the Fraternal Model Code. This Model Code would effect the decision making process of the fraternals.

After meeting with the Law Committee members in Austin, Texas, the fraternal societies in Texas took the position that we were not interested in changing our present system. This decision was based on a number the proposals, as stated below.

Proposed: Full time licensed sales representatives would be required.

These are the same requirements used by commercial companies.

Proposed: The governing board would have the power to change the legal definition of their fraternal without consulting the membership of the society.

Proposed: Also, without consulting the membership, the governing board would be permitted to create other corporations to carry out business activities.

These proposals would drastically alter the way in which we conduct our fraternal business.

As you know, our society operates with part-time sales representatives.

While the Model Code does allow for part-time sales representatives, they would not be permitted to sell more than $50,000 of life insurance in a given year.

This second proposal would give the governing board the power to change their fraternal society to a commercial company without conferring with the membership. This is in direct opposition to our regulatory code which states that membership must have control of the society in a democratic process.

The third proposal is also in conflict with our existing system. Under the present system, our governing board can not create other operating corporations to take care of its business.

The Supreme Lodge Board has gone on record with a unanimous vote, stating that as the governing body of the SPJST Society, that we are against adopting the Fraternal Model Code as presented at this time.

Home Office Employees to Assist in Public Television Fund Drive SPJST

KNCT-TV, Channel 46, a Central Texas area public television station, will soon have their annual membership drive and are asking for our help in generating financial support for their operations.

20, Granger Hosts Second Annual Tarok Tournament on December 4

Lodge 20, Granger will hold their second annual Tarok Tournament on Saturday, December 4, 1993.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. Play begins at 9:30 a.m. Entry fee for the day is $12 per person and includes noon meai, snacks and prizes.

Lodge 1, Fayetteville Christmas Party Set for December 5 The officers and directors of Fayetteville SPJST Lodge No. 1 met at Louis Polansky's office on Wednesday, November 10, 1993.

President Polansky said at the last meeting that members were asked to contribute to a Czech Christmas exhibit at the Fayette Heritage Museum in La Grange in the way of Czech Christmas traditions, stories, decorations, etc. The holiday exhibit has changed, therefore, these items are no longer required.

In an effort to help youth members from Lodge No. 1 with the cost of getting a college education, Lodge No. 1 voted to give one lodge member graduating from high school a $500 scholarship and, if there is no one graduating, that $250 be put into an annuity for this purpose.

December 5 has been set for the annual Christmas party to start at 11 a.m. at the SPJST Hall. The lodge will provide the turkey, ham and drinks. Members are asked to bring a covered dish and/or dessert. There will be gifts for the children and door prizes for the adults.

Entertainment is planned.

This party will certainly put you in the mood for Christmas; therefore, we want every lodge member to make plans to come to Fayetteville for an old-fashioned Christmas get together. We have also asked Santa t come!

Our meeting was called to order by our president. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Tami and Celia Dobecka.

18, Elgin Reports on November Meeting Lodge

Dear Members, The meeting of the Elgin SPJST Loge No. 18 was called to order at 7:45 p.m., Tuesday, November 16, 1993 by President Dale Kessel who also led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. There were 23 members in attendance.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. Thank you notes were acknowledged form Kent Cummins, the magician who performed the entertainment for our Halloween Family Fun Night and Alice Kovar, whose husband, Ervin or "Brother-inlaw," as all of us knew him, recently passed away after a long battle with cancer.

Leslie Gustafson made the motion to donate $40 to the Scholarship Fund—$25 from the Lodge and $15 from the Youth Club, who earned the money at our Family Fun Night. The Treasurer's Report was read and approved.

This meal will include roast beef and Monterrey chicken with trimmings, dessert, coffee and tea for $7 per person (plus tax and gratuity). At our November meeting, we were entertained by the P.O.L.K.of A. dancers of Victoria. It was a great program and we watched (and learned!) some dances.

Our sympathy to the family of Erwin Leshikar, brother-in-law of Franklin and Lois Elles. He will be greatly missed by all.

Dear Readers, Our meeting was called to order by President Henry Breitkreutz on October 9th, 1993.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Holly Dennis and Christopher Pavelka.

Visitors to our meeting, Edward Snider and Eleanora Snider, were acknowledged.

The minutes from our September meeting were read by Secretary Virlene Kelley and approved.

The treasurer's report given by Nancy Milner was also approved as read.

Barbara Pavelka reported that the Youth Club had nine members and three adults present at their meeting. She also said that they had received a check for their participation in Westfest and an allowance for attendance. They are planning a cake walk for November 13th and a halloween Party which will consist of a hayride and dressing up.

October birthdays were honored. Best wishes were extended to Mary Pavelka, Gene Kelley, and Holly Dennis.

The Sunshine Committee had no one on the sick list.

A moment of silence was observed for our dearly departed brother, Harry Pechacek.

There was no old or unfinished business.

Under new business, Vernon Wood spoke about the Scholarship Fund. He let us know that forms were available and he read about previous scholarships. A motion was made by Vernon Wood and seconded by Gene Kelley to send $25 to the Scholarship Fund. The motion carried.

Discussion was brought to the floor about our Christmas Party. Elizabeth Kubitza said she thought it should be held on a regular lodge meeting day. A motion was made by Vernon Wood and seconded by Gene Pavelka to table any decision until the next lodge meeting.

The motion carried.

An invitation was extended to the membership to attend a 97th birthday party for Albina Pavelka to be held on October 17th at the Mart Community Center form 2 until 4 p.m., hosted by friends and family.

The adult door prize was won by Vernon Wood and the youth door prize

by Anna Dennis.

Elizabeth Kubitza reported that instead of sending flowers to the Harry Pechacek service, that a donation of $25 had been made to the St. Joseph Cemetery.

It was voted that we retain the same nominating committee from last year.

On November 8, 199, members of Lodge 88, Houston had their regular monthly meeting. President Jerry Ermis opened the meeting at 7:30 p.m. with a small attendance due to bad weather.

Lindsey Michalak and Darlene and Marlene Migl presented the colors and all recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

We had a moment of silence for our departed members: Ernest Lewis, Warren Havemann, John and James Oehl and Joe Gooden.

Secretary Mildred Holeman read the minutes which were approved as read.

The secretary also read the names of the new applicants which were accepted (19 new members). She also read acknowledgements from the following families: The John Oehl Family; The Warren Havemann Family; and a personal letter from Gladys Havemann; and a letter from Irene Lewis. The Lewises were both on the Entertainment Committee for years. An acknowledgement was also received from Erna O'Connor, the mother of Joe Gooden.

King Hegwood, chairman of the Kitchen Committee, thanked everyone who helped on Czech Day. Blue Room Chairman Margaret Allbritton announced that the Blue Room Party on December 19 would be from 4 until 9 p.m. Tickets will be $12.50 per person and will include a chicken-fried steak, drinks and a dance by the Central Texas Sounds. I hope that you'll not pass up this Christmas party. Willie Wehring reported for the Social Night Committee and Tom Marsh reported for the Men's Club, which included a report of the trip to the dog races.

President Lowrina Lindemann and Lillie Spies from the Birthday Club invited anyone who wants to come to our sandwich dinner on November. She also thanked everyone for the pastry.

Karl Lindemann reported for the Board of Trustees. He announced that a new public address system was installed.

It has certainly improved our sound system. Roy Stark was hired to help our caretaker Glenn Saunders.

Tom Marsh stated that the books were audited and found in order.

On December 18,the Choral Group will go to the Rest Home in . Needville to entertain the members who need a lift at Christmas.

Chairman Gene Barcak of the Rules and Regulations Committee asked his Committee to come to the podium. Larry Ptlughaupt read the changes. Members will vote on the changes in December.

Our sick people are: Mike Trefell, who was in and out of the hospital for several weeks; Ed Gerlich, who is in the Hermann Hospital for knee surgery; Judy Vasek, who is very ill. Willie Geuttner and Annie Vala are also on the sick list; both were visited by the Kostoms the day after Czech Day and were each given a potted plant.

District Youth Counselor Marie Stayton gave a brief talk at the end of the meeting.

The Annual Meeting will be on Sunday, December 12, 1993 at 10:30 p.m.

Helen Hegwood announced that Lodge 88 insurance sales representatives would be meeting for a seminar on November 15 at Lodge 88 from 7 until 10 p.m.

the roll call. This being the November 10 meeting, we had a few extra occasions to discuss. We didn't have to have cooks since we had delicious sandwiches, deviled eggs, dips, chips and sausage. Our sisters all brought several things which made a good meal. Those who helped in the kitchen to get everything organized were Lowrina Lindemann, Marie Pokladnik and Mary Kosut.

Secretary Rita Alexander didn't have the minutes from the October meeting, but she took the minutes today.

Treasurer Lillie Spies gave the financial report. Those who gave money instead of pastries were: Lara Bell Warnasch, Marie Pokluda, Rosa Lee Kostom, Helen Hegwood and Ann Urbanovsky, who gave a five-pound bag of sugar.

Mary Kosut reported on the cards she sent and telephone conversations.

Those who are ill are Willie Mae Stang, Anna Hoffman, Sylvia Melia, and Alma McNaspy.

Kathy Trefell called me about her husband, Mike, who has been very ill, too.

He is at home now from the hospital. We were all so glad that Edna Froehlich attended our meeting.

I had a most welcome letter from Elsie Kadera in McKinney, telling me about her mother, Mrs. Frances Dvorak, who fell and broke her right elbow, her pelvis and arm. No one knows how happy I was to get this letter from Elsie. Mrs. Dvorak is 93 years old and is now doing remarkably well.

On December 1, we'll have a Christmas dinner. Bessie Lero, Julia Kinnamon, Adele Kite, Virginia Hale, Margie Anders, Rita Alexander, Lillie Spies and Helen Hegwood will bring the pastry.

Now, for a special treat, on Tuesday, December 7, we'll go to Ryan's Steakhouse. We are to be there at 10:45 a.m. and eat at 11 a.m.

On December 8, we will have a covered dish meal and a meeting. Cake will be donated by Pearl Hanka, Josephine Burt, Josephine Bishop, Alice Bily and Inez Jeanes.

Alice Bily and Josephine Bishop will be in charge of the kitchen and Helen Hegwood is in charge of the tea and coffee.

This will be a very special day—the election of officers for 1994.

Just now, the telephone rang and it was Anna Elzner, one of my dear friends of the Birthday Club. She moved to Tomball Nursing Home. Her number is 351-0301. She was telling me how pleased she is to be in this lovely home.

It always makes me happy to hear that these people who had to leave their home have adjusted to it. My father always quoted some scripture out of the Bible that stated, "We are created to adjust."

The Calcutta Game was won by Adele Kite and Bessie Dewer.

Alice Bily and Virginia Hale had a birthday in November. After we sang "Happy Birthday," and Mary Kosut said the table blessing, we adjourned at 12 noon.

All of the reports were approved as read.

Correspondence was read Brother Keith Gatewood, who is a state field representative. His letter explained how to achieve an Honorable Mention in the Lodge Incentive and Recognition Program. Our sales representatives are working hard to meet this goal.

A donation of $30.80 was given to the scholarship fund. Our guest, Julie Roach, also signed up for a certificate.

Youth Club member Brandi Mason asked for cakes and cookies to be sold at our annual Christmas Party. We will have the date in the next issue.

A motion was made and passed that our lodge retain the some officers again in 1994. They are as follows: President Jerry Milan Vice President Rose Steinman Secretary and Financial Secretary Mary Renfro Treasurer Anna Johnson Reporter Mary Pavey Officer installation will be held at the Metroplex Lodges Christmas Party hosted by Lodge No. 183, Arlington, Fort Worth. We extend our congratulations to Sister Tina (Christine) Harrison of St. Louis, Missouri, who won the Missouri State Doubles Championship that was

held at the Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri Tennis Tournament.

On Thursday, December 16, our lodge and Sokol will be holding their annual Christmas party here at the lodge. The event starts at 7:30 p.m.

We enjoyed a couple of days visit with Brother Mark Mamula of Hamden, Connecticut who had been attending a convention in San Antonio, Texas.

Happy Birthday was sung to Brother Joe Milan on his 75th birthday and to Billy Wade Sanders on his fifth birthday.

May all of our November celebrants have a happy one.

A memorial in memory of Sister Teryn Naughton was made by Brother Emil and Sister Frances Mamula of South Bend, Indiana.

Our 80th Anniversary celebration was a big success. It was great seeing so many of our lodge members who we haven't seen in years.

A wonderful banquet catered by Sister Patti Gage of Decatur was enjoyed by all.

The highlights of the evening included several wonderful speeches, including presentations by Brad Wright, our local NBC newscaster and by Lake Worth Mayor J.T. Hinkle. President Brother Jerry Milan asked us everyone to uncork the champagne on their table and have a toast. As of November 1, 1993, our mortgage has been paid off. This received a thunderous applause.

Sister Donna Parker was our master of ceremonies and she kept everyone in a happy mood. Prior to the invocation by Brother Bobby Clevland, Brother B.J. Clevland sang "God is Watching Over Us." A dance and a lot of visiting of guests—some from as far away as Virginia—was enjoyed by all.

A special thank you was extended to everyone who made this such a special occasion for us.

The meeting adjourned to good food and Sister Anna Johnson's famous birthday cake and other goodies.

We wish you all a "Happy and Healthy Thanksgiving."

Our. president, Brother Jerry Milan will soon be in Czechoslovakia as will Sister Vera Richards of Issaquah, Washington. Get home safely. Sister Henrietta Milan is due home today from Chicago, Illinois after spendirg several days with her family.

142, Houston Reports on November Meeting

The Deer Antler Contest was also noted to be in progress during this deer season.

Our food and clothing drive is also in progress.

We had an officer from the police department speak at this meeting. He talked about home safety and security.

Rosie Tumis gave the financial secretary-treasurer's Report. The Board of Trustees and bar report were delivered by Henry Hermis, Sr. The Youth Club report was read by Youth Leader Elizabeth Hermis. Sister Elizabeth thanked everyone who gave donations to the Youth Club. These included: Millie Linhart, Frank and Dorothy Tumis, Rita and Henry Hermis, Joe and Eva Braunagel, Willie and Lillian Schmitt and Ms. Buri.

The following members were reported on the sick list: Rosie Tumis, Erna Fehrle, and Rudy Cernuch, who is in the hospital. Congratulations to Donna Kieschnick who had a baby girl.

No new applications for membership were recorded for this month.

Visitors recognized were: Jo Buri, John Diglicco, Joe Braunagel, Joe Gambil, Jo Ann Buri, and Helen Hegwood.

Helen Hegwood, State District Five Field Representative talked about the Fall Insurance Seminar to be held on Monday, November 15 at Lodge 88 and on Tuesday, November 16 at Needville. The Insurance Department is doing exceptionally well and the money is well invested.

Nelson and Alice Jochen celebrated their 43rd anniversary on November 4.

November birthday celebrants include Martin Kieschnick, Mary Ann Kieschnick, Alene Kieschnick, Barbara Hermis, and Viola Doskocil.

The senior members prize went to Bob Schleider.

Door prizes went to Gus Molenosky, Elizabeth Hermis, Robert Kieschnick and Frank Tumis.

Our $60 capsule prize went unclaimed, due to the absence of Robert Shari and Cory Lynn Thomason. Next month's prize of $70 will be drawn from the register book. Four members who are present will divide the prize equally.

The meeting adjourned at 3 p.m. and was followed by refreshments and a delicious lunch served by Kitchen Manager Rosie Tumis, Rita Hermis, Millie Linhart and Mary Ann Kieschnick.

Dear Readers, Our monthly meeting was called to order at 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 14, 1993 by President Keith Kieschnick. We had 43 members and six visitors present.

All stood to recite the pledge of Allegiance to our flag. Roll call of officers was then held. All were present.

Secretary Alice Jochen read the minutes from the previous meeting. These were approved after corrections.

Correspondence regarding the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program was also read by President Kieschnick.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Marilyn Spivey read correspondence in regards to "What Can 100 Pennies Buy."

155, Austin to Host Christmas Party on December 5 Lodge

Plans for our annual Christmas party are finalized. Steak and Ale Restaurant, located at 2211 West Anderson Lane (Phone: 453-1688) was selected. The party will start at 2 p.m. Directions: From IH 35, when you get into Austin, take exit 183, right, for about a mile, then take a left on Anderson for about a mile.

On the left side of Anderson Lane is Steak and Ale. If you are traveling on 1325 (Burnet Road), the restaurant is just east of Anderson Lane and the Burnet Road intersection. All of these directions are for people coming to Austin from Temple, Taylor, etc.

We are hoping to have a large atten dance. No advance reservation is necessary. SPJST State Field Manager Gene McBride will be our guest speaker. It was decided at the last meeting in November that five lottery tickets would be drawn at the Christmas Party.

Mrs. Louise Klaus Heine, age 90, of Austin, died on Friday, November 12, 1993. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert W. Heine, in 1987. He was a member of Lodge 155. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, LaVerne and John Hejl and granddaughters Janet and Diane Hejl, all of Austin.

She is also survived by a brother, the last of 11 children, and a sister-in-law, Bill and Alma- Klaus of Elgin; numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Monday, November 15 in the Weed-Corley Chapel with Pastor Dean R. Busboom and Rev. Jesse Essinger of Faith Lutheran Church officiating. Burial was in Austin Memorial Park.

Mrs. Heine was talented in many ways and her dear grandchildren will miss her greatly. Esther, Janet, or Diane spent every night with her ever since their grandpa died. Our condolences go to LaVerne and family.

The next regular meeting will be held on February 6, 1994 at Faith Community Church at 2 p.m. The last meeting was held on November 7 with discussion of future plans. The election of officers also took place.

Libbie Bartek reported that Zachary Esparza, grandbaby of J.C. and Linda Johnson, is in the hospital and asked to keep him and his family in your prayers.

FAC J.C. Johnson recognized Janet Lyon as a birthday celebrant. He asked that all members participate in the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive. He also discussed the lodge incentive program and asked the members to give the sales representatives leads so that our lodge could meet its goal. All members were asked to bring canned goods to our December meeting. These canned goods will be given to a needy family.

Door prizes were won by Janet Lyon, Rick Beck and Bill Hutka.

Motion was made and carried for Monday, November 29, 1993 to be at our lodge hall to decorate for Christmas.

183, Arlington Reflects on Changing Times

Lodge

Dear Brothers, Sisters and Friends, "The times, they are a' changing."

Nowhere are these words more apparent than at Lodge 183 in Arlington. People often allude to the saying that nothing is definite except death and taxes, but the overall change that occurs is also a constant. And, of course, some of these changes are welcome and some are not received enthusiastically.

The world changes so fast that you couldn't stay wrong all the time if you tried.

The annual climatic changes have taken place in North Central Texas, going from the hot summer months to brisk autumn days and heading for the cold wet of the winter. Mild sunny days are a welcome relief.

As the seasons change, we progress on to the holiday period. As we have mentioned, Lodge 183, Arlington will be the host for this year's four lodges metroplex Christmas party. Hopefully, everyone has marked their calendar for Saturday, December the 4th. It is shaping up to be a special social event. The doors will open about mid-morning (ten o'clock) and socializing with complimentary draft beer will begin at 11 a.m. Lunch will be served buffet style beginning at 11:45 a.m. A very tasty meal is planned and there should be plenty to eat. Eating and visiting with friends and relatives will continue until 2 p.m. At 2 p.m., the installation of lodge officers for 1994 will take place. The incoming officers for Lodges 92, 154, 180 and 183 will be sworn-in. At 2:30 p.m., the band, Alpine Village will begin playing their special kind of music for our dancing and listening pleasure. All members of these lodges are welcome to attend and their admittance is gratis. Friends and nonmembers are welcome and they will pay

$5.75 for the meal and entertainment.

Non-member children will pay $3 for the day's activities.

Please remember to notify your lodge's financial secretary and let them know the number of individuals who plan to attend the Christmas party. The four lodges membership secretaries will be at the door to greet the attendees. We need the number of those who expect to attend in order to plan for everyone.

Lodge 183's officers are the planning committee for this year's annual Christmas party. The committee has met once formally and at other times informally in order to give this event a special touch. The ceiling to the lodge hall has been replaced and the walls are receiving a thorough cleaning. The dance floor is due a good polishing and other items are planned to help us put our best foot forward for the gathering. President Inez Greenlees has made a list and checked it twice (at least) to cover all details.

One of the most significant changes to occur worldwide is the division of the country of Czechoslovakia. On January 1st of this year, it was divided into two republics: the Czech Republic and the Republic of Slovakia. Other countries in Europe and Asia are having tragic results due to emerging separations of state. The leaders in charge of the Czechoslovakian division kept the political attitude calm and a civilized break-up took place. The Vestnik has published an outstanding written series depicting most facets of daily life in the former Czechoslovakia.

The August '93 issue of Smithsonian magazine had a very good article on the changing face of the Czech Republic and the many young Americans taking advantage of the progressive state of affairs in the new country. The September issue of National Geographic magazine had an excellent pictorial and article of this Czech region. Predictions are that this area will soon rival other European countries as an industrial and exporting entity.

Hopefully it will retain its "Old World Charm" and continue to beckon tourists and descendants of Czechoslovakians.

On September 16th, my mother-inlaw, Mary Sill (Loge 84), husband Robert and myself flew to Maryland to visit with John Sill (Lodge 183) and his fiance Patricia Raines. We visited with John for four days and each and every day was filled with activities. Patricia and John cooked several outstanding meals for us and we also dined at some of the finer seafood restaurants located in Maryland in the Chesapeake Bay region. We shopped at an outlet mall in West Virginia and a mall in Frederick, Maryland. We attended many activities in conjunction with the anniversary of the Civil War battle at Antietam National Battlefield.

Several groups in authentic Confederate and Union army dress appeared. A Confederate drum and fife band played and also a Union army band gave a concert. Scenes highlighting the aftermath of the battle were depicted in a torch light excursion on the actual battlefield. The local townspeople and the National Park Service employees do an outstanding job with this annual event. We flew back on Sunday afternoon. John and Patricia were married on November 6th.

Congratulations to both of you! Many happy anniversaries. (Sister-in-laws with the same name.)

Robert and I attend the State Fair of Texas in Dallas every year and we always go on Czech Day. This year was no less than past years as the music, food, athletics, companionship and general activities are always high caliber. The colorful Czech costumes are an exciting visual

experience. The fair grounds and the activities tent where the gathering took place was a bit wet due to rain, but after things got started, we hardly noticed.

Many old friendships are renewed each year at this annual Czech Day. Changes occur within the lodge itself.

We held the election of officers for the coming year at our monthly meeting on November 3rd. A whole new slate of officer were elected to fill positions for 1994. Jeanne Roznos was elected to be the new president for Lodge 183 for the next year. She has new faces to help her with the administration of lodge business.

We want to offer best wishes to the new group of incoming officers. Come to the Christmas party and see the inauguration of the new principals. All members need to support your new officers.

Without dislocating my shoulder, I do want to pat the back of the outgoing officers, including myself, for doing the thankless job of day-to-day management of Lodge 183. Everyone did an outstanding job these past few years. President Inez Greenlees really deserves a standing ovation for holding the lodge together for the past six years. There were many crises of minor and major proportions that had to be dealt with. Several members gave up and walked away rather than face these problems. Only through hard work and dedication by Inez and the other loyal members kept us afloat on many occasions. I would personally like to thank this hard-working group of individuals.

Many thanks to Inez Greenlees and her hours of determination. I hope our legacy will be passed on to those who follow.

Family nights were thinly attended until our most recent one. It looks like another change will take place and family nights will again be a lodge affair with many participants. We have already celebrated the family night for November.

On Friday, November 12th, we had our Thanksgiving Family Night. We had turkey, dressing and many other good dishes and desserts. There was a great turnout. There were many families and several young families with small .children. Everyone enjoyed the food and company. Some groups played games while others preferred to visit. Give the lodge a call to find out when we will have family night for December.

A game warden was traveling along a back road one day when he came upon a man at the edge of a field. There must have been two hundred dead doves laying in a pile. The game warden screeched to a halt and immediately jumped out of his vehicle. He ran over to the man and said, "I've caught you red-handed! You have shot way over the normal limit of dove."

The man stated that he had not shot the doves. He said that he didn't even have a shotgun. The game warden thought that it was a likely story and didn't believe him. He asked him where he had his gun.

The man again stated that he didn't have a gun but that he would show him what had happened. The man told the game warden that he had "uglied" the dove to death. The game warden said, "You did what?" The man stated,"Look. Here come two more doves flying this way."

As the dove neared the man, he made one of the most horrible facial expressions that the game warden had ever seen.

Instantly, the dove fell to the ground, dead. The warden picked the birds up and sure enough, they were dead with no sign of a gun shot wound anywhere. The warden was astounded. The warden asked the man where he learned to do that. The man told him that his motherin-law showed him how. The constable asked him if he ever took his mother-in-

Lodge 186, Caldwell Reports on November Meeting Dear Members, On Tuesday, November 9th, Lodge No. 186 held its regular monthly meeting.

President George Hlavinka opened the meeting by welcoming District One Director Andrew Vavra. The pledge to our flag was led by Sister Fay Luksa with a moment of silence for departed members.

Secretary Faye Luksa called roll. One officer was absent. The minutes were read, corrected and approved. Brother O.T. Wine gave the financial report and it was approved. Communication was then read. Five new members were voted on and approved for membership. Dues for 1994 were voted on and will remain $4.

The election of officers was held. By acclamation, all of the current year's officers were reelected for another year.

On Sunday, December 12, there will be a memorial service in memory of departed members of Lodge No. 186.

Lunch will be at 12 noon and consist of baked broilers, purchased at the Burleson County Fair Auction by Lodge 186, turkey, dressing and all the trimmings.

Ladies are asked to bring vegetables and/or desserts. Following the noon meal, installation of officers will be held and a short meeting will follow. SPJST Lodge No. 186 welcomes and invites all members and their families to attend this memorial service and lunch.

200, Bruceville-Eddy Reports on November Lodge Meeting Lodge

On November 3, 1993, President Bob Miracle opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States flag. Linda Roming then read the minutes of the previous meeting and they were approved as read. Under old business, Coach Bob Miracle announced that the volleyball practice will be on November 15, 1993. He said that he would call each player and tell them where and what time. The team is very inspired and will do its best to win and bring a new trophy home to Eddy.

The lodge then discussed the need of Eddy's Senior Citizens for Thanksgiving dinner. We will provide them with four turkeys. We hope that each of them will have a happy Thanksgiving and we are happy to help in such a simple way.

Also, under old business, President Bob Miracle reminded everyone of the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive being conducted by the Supreme Lodge. The lodge voted on making a $10 donation and hope its members will follow this example and donate.

The first order of new business was to vote on four new members to Lodge 200.

They are David Wayne Wiley, John Samuel Wiley, Misty Michelle Wiley and

Susan Elizabeth Wiley. We, the members of Lodge 200, welcome you with great hope that you will become active in the lodge to whatever extent is possible .

It was announced by Gene McBride that the lodge now has 26 new members.

That, along with the ten fraternal activities we have hosted, qualifies us for the Supreme Lodge's Gold Award in their incentive program. It also brings us that much closer to our goal to achieve 200 + members by SPJST's 100th anniversary celebration. We can do this—and perhaps surpass it—if we all pull together.

The lodge discussed the final plans for our salute to Eddy's Association of Retired Veterans on November 10, 1993 at the Old Eddy Fire Station. We intend to explain the existence of the SPJST and to express to them our sincere appreciation for the service that they gave us and our country in guaranteeing our freedom.

The Christmas Party was the next topic. The lodge decided that each of us would be attending a number of Christmas celebrations so we decided to have a small social after the meeting on December 1, 1993 at Eddy's City Hall at 6:30 p.m. We will serve snacks and wish each other well on the miracle of all nights, "Christmas."

The lodge decided to have a Valentine Social on February 12, 1993. We discussed having it at The Grove Community Center at one of their scheduled dances.

In that way, we help another organization, and at the same time, have a great time for ourselves. Details will be worked out and each of you will be notified.

Fraternal Activities Chairman Earl Soudelier announced that the tree was planted at the Eddy Volunteer Fire Station by the lodge. The tree was donated by Herb and Virginia Schattle of Temple. It is a fast growing tree and it is called a varnish tree. Thank you, Herb and Virginia, for your support in helping our lodge in its small way to help the ecology.

President Bob Miracle reminds each member that the December meeting is the election of officers for 1994. We would like each member to attend and express his right to vote on the leadership for the new year.

Fraternal Activities Chairman Earl Soudelier reminded the members of the upcoming plans by Brother Frank Klinkovsky to get together another trip to Las Vegas in mid-February. If you are interested, call Frank at the Home Office and let him know. This will be a fun trip with so many SPJST friends. You can not help but have a great time.

President Bob Miracle then closed our meeting until December 1, 1993 at 6:30 p.m.

On November 10, 1993, Lodge 200 of Eddy saluted the Retired Veterans Association of Eddy, Texas with a meal and social. Nine veterans and their wives attended. President Bob Miracle and Gene McBride explained the existence and history of SPJST. Ed Hudson, the head of the Veterans Association, then gave a brief history and explained the purpose of their organization. President Bob Miracle presented the veterans with a Certificate of Appreciation for their service to their country. The social was enjoyed by all of us.

Circle of Czech Women Report on November Meeting

The Corpus Christi Circle of Women met November 4th for a productive business meeting and unusual luncheon. The food was traditional turkey and dressing with sweet potatoes, green beans, cranberry sauce, fruit salad and cake for dessert. What was unusual was that two of our guests, Jerry Elzner and Henry Kosling made the dressing and baked the turkey. Everything was delicious. Henry also baked the rolls and Jerry helped to serve. Our third guest, two-year-old Jerry Elzner, only ate and enjoyed the attention he received.

Our meeting was called to order by Vice President Esther Cunningham. Our President Bertha Podhrasky's mother was in the hospital. We recited the Pledge of Allegiance and remained standing for a moment of silence i memory of Helen Johnson, aunt of Alice Roberts, Anne Zvolanek and Mary Sebestek.

Esther welcomed 30 members and 11 male guests. Correspondence was read

by Evelyn Trojacek, including a "Thinking of You" card from Rose Kopecek and a donation to the Krouzek for October Birthday celebrants.

Libbie Elsik of the Sunshine Committee sent a 50th Anniversary card and money gift to Francis and Libbie Smith A "Get Well" card was sent to Phil Reames and Lydia Tyrock.

A "Thinking of You" card was send to Martha Vrla.

Trip to Christmas House It took several of us to describe the sights we saw on our October 20th trip to the Christmas House and Santa's Workshop in Falfurias. Even then, I don't believe we described it all. There was so much to see. We also toured the King Ranch Museum in Kingsville that day. Thanks go once more to Jerry Elzner for driving us.

Norma Baker passed out an up-to-date membership list with addresses and telephone numbers. Our membership now stands at 31. We all appreciate the time and effort she put into it.

A $100 donation to Sokol Corpus Christi was voted on and passed. It was also decided that we would donate $50 worth of groceries to the Women's Shelter plus any items brought by members to our December 2 meeting.

Chances on the afghan donated by Anne Spencer were distributed to the membership. The drawing will be held at our December meeting.

Another day trip is being planned.

This one, to view the whopping cranes from one of the charter boats, sounds exciting. The Christmas Tree Forest at the Art Museum will also be visited on this trip in order to view the tree decorated with Czech ornaments by our Lodge 79 Youth Club.

We voted to eat out after our December 2 meeting with the Krouzek picking up $5 of the tab for each member.

A new place, Old Country Buffet, was chosen for our luncheon. Afterwards, we will return to the hall for games and visiting.

Ella Simcik brought three door prizes won by Lil Hruska, Milly Elzner and Mary Elzner. Norma Baker crocheted the pretty scarf won by Helen Sacky. Milly and Jerry Elzner donated the leaded crystal glasses won by Pauline Novosad.

Rose Huff donated the prize won by Norma Baker and Mary Elzner brought the one won by Lillie Hayek.

Last month I reported on a door prize brought by Mary Elzner, which was actually donated by Leona Matula. Since Mary, Leona and Mattie Netek usually travel together from the Sinton-Taft area to attend our meetings, it is sometimes difficult to tell who brings what. All three of these ladies are very generous with their contributions to our Krouzek.

Happy Birthday was sung to Anne Spencer and Lillie Hayek before we adjourned. Happy birthday ladies and Happy Holidays to you all.

News of Members Bertha Malik enjoyed a two-week vacation at the New Jersey shores with son, Rudy, his wife, Joy, and Joy's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Malek.

Rose Kopecek is recovering from a fall at home and is doing better.

Wanda Petr is doing better and she will soon get to go home.

Nita Houzvicka, Ella Mae Faraizl, Mary Sebestek, and Martha Kocian were all on the sick list. We hope that II of our ill members are feeling better.

Bertha Malik could use any scrap material—flannel or cotton batting. She is making quilts for the children with AIDS. Old Business Bids were taken for the cedar chest and the lucky winner was Libbie Smith.

Bessie Petr, who will cater our Christmas party, said that the menu will feature stuffed chicken breasts, seasoned rice, green bean almandine, cranberry congealed salad, fruit salad, rolls, coffee and tea and Mandarin orange cake.

New Business The members voted to make contributions to the following groups this year: the Veterans Hospital Auxiliary Gift Shop, in memory of Marie Toberney, Sister City Display Case and Bryan House (children with AIDS).

Each member is asked to bring $ in an envelope with name on it for donation to the Ronald McDonald House.

Ladies Circle of Fort Worth Enjoys Barbecue Luncheon In lieu of our regular meeting on November 9th, members of the Ladies Circle of Fort Worth gathered for lunch at Riscky's Barbecue Place at the Stockyards Station. Fifty-seven members and six guests enjoyed plenty of good food and fellowship. Birthday honorees were Elma Anderson, Fora Koci, Merel Kovar, Lillie McMillen, Victoria Murphy, Ann Schneider, Laura Posival and Shirley Zich. After lunch, some of the members returned to the hall to enjoy games until 2 p.m.

Dear Members and Friends: Our November 3 meeting was called to order by our president, Jo Prochaska.

We were happy to have Ruby Jones back after a hospital stay.

We missed Bessie Brezina who was away visiting in Florida.

Elma Anderson reported on her daughter, Roberta Peters, who is now in a wheelchair. You are in our thoughts and prayers, Roberta.

Louise Oujesky reported that she has a new grandson, Connor Laymance.

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving lunch. Thanks to Natalie Maly and Netta Naugle for baking the turkeys; the dressing was prepared by Avelia Meza.

Now, here we are talking about Christmas. Hard to believe. The club will furnish the ham and members are asked to bring their favorite side dishes and desserts. There will also be a $5 gift exchange.

District Six Presents Summary of Youth Achievement Day Results Dear Vestnik Readers, The District Six SPJST Youth Achievement Day was hosted by Hallettsville Lodge No. 4 on Sunday, August 1, at the Hilije SPJST Hall.

Members of Lodge No. 40, El CampoHillje, Lodge No. 4, Hallettsville, Lodge No. 28, East Bernard Lodge and Lodge No. 30, Talton, participated in point and

merit, royalty, Beseda, talent, craft, scrapbook, and poster competition.

The event was held under the direction of District Six Youth Counselor Marcy Dorotik and Assistant District Six Youth Counselor Karen Kaspar.

Kim Kacal of Lodge No. 40, El Campo-Hillje, was the emcee for the day's activities. Kim was the 1990-1991 District Six Queen.

The presentation of colors was given

by District Six Flag Bearers Craig Dorotik and Lenice Kaspar.

Texas Visitor Offers an Insider's View of Roznov

by Victor Peter A big "Dobry den," —good day, or hello, to all the people in Texas. I have been back from Roznov, Czech Republic since October 6. I have loads of information and believe that this trip has, in some way, helped to establish better relations between the people in Moravia and Czech Texans.

As I mentioned before, the first month in the Czech Republic, you are considered a visitor and everyone relates to you as a visitor. After a month, however, you will experience the local life of the area.

Today I want to describe the town of Roznov Pod Radhostem (Roznov Under Mt. Radhost). It is situated on the slope of Mount Radhost, the most well-known mountain in the Beskedy Mountain Range. It is also called the "heart of Wallachia."

The territory is marked by numerous hills, deep forests, clearings, and small farmsteads. Wooden houses are scattered about this region between the mountain ranges of the Beskedy and Javorniky. Physically, the terrain is not jagged, nor rugged, but composed of fairly round hilltops and slopes, wide valley and dales. It is a perfect ski resort area where everyone, including children, can ski cross country for fifty miles without the danger of coming too close to a cliff or an avalanche and still be on top of the mountain range.

Roznov P.R. is situated on the E-442 Road of European classification leading from Germany through Plsen, Prague, and Olomouc to Roznov. It is also known as "The Beskedy Gate." Ski resort hotels and ski lifts are everywhere, all the way to Frenstat, eight miles from Roznov. From there, it is 28 miles to the Slovak Republic border. Stretching onward to the Tetra Mountains, this is some of the most beautiful scenery that I have ever seen.

The heart of Wallachia (Valasko) is in an area of the Vsetin district and includes the Wallachian towns of Vsetin, Vallsske Mezerici and Roznov. Only the last one maintains a close relationship to the region's historical traditions. The town of Roznov extends from both sides of the Becva River to the foothills of Cerna Hora and the memorable peak of Radhost.

Roznov is the oldest town of the group. It was founded in 1246 by the Archbishop of Olomouc.

Today the ruins of a fortified castle tower above the town on Hradisko Hill.

It was ordered to be broken up in 1539 following its misuse by robber hordes.

Today the ruins stand as a silent, yet eloquent witness, to a time gone by.

The old Roznov Spa building at the park entrance reflects the popularity that the Roznov Spa once enjoyed. The spa earned its reputation due to the region's suitable climate, availability of medical care, and last—hut not least due to the quality of the area's sheep milk, cheese and zincic, or whey of sheep's milk.

The Roznov Spa was known for its lung center. Between the period of 1865 until 1937, the spa received visitors and patients from all over the world. Records indicate that about 41,000 patients from abroad and 80,000 from within the country took advantage of the facility.

Although the climate and natural conditions did not change, the health resort at Roznov fell into obscurity during World War II. Architecturally, the museum at Roznov is considered one of the oldest in Europe. It was established by brothers Bohumir and Alois Jaronik in 1925.

The impressive park features wooden dwellings, farmsteads, corn lofts, sheep folds, a community inn and a wooden church, all of which were originally scattered about an extensive area of Wallachia. They have all been reassembled in their original style.

They are very well built. I know, as I lived in one of the buildings five months this year as the first American employed by the museum. Some of th-e buildings that are found here were transferred directly from the town square of Roznov.

Upon entering the park, you are surrounded by the original beauty and detailing of timber framework architecture.

The hillside portrays the way the countryside may have looked for our forefathers 150 years ago, as 80 percent of the Czechs who immigrated to Texas came from this region.

The proper town of Roznov has about 18,000 inhabitants and is situated on both sides of the Becva River. It preserves its original character and scenic beauty.

Cultural activities in the town are rich and productive. Physical training, sports and tourism also have rich traditions in Roznov.

The ski jump in Roznov was built with a plastic surface and is considered to be the largest of that kind in Central Europe and it is used all year long. Jiri Raska, a gold medal winner in the Tenth Winter Olympic Games mastered his skills here and today lives nearby in Frenstat.

Roznov features a number of recreational homes, hoarding houses and hotels. It is also possible to stay in a modern family home with a private room for less than $10 a night, including breakfast.

Wallachia and the Roznov open-air museum have helped to preserve the creative genius, popular traditions, songs and customs of the pastoral Carpathian culture which I intend to explain in more detail in a future writing.

Almost none of the visitors to Roznov miss a trip to Pustevny to see and enjoy the memorable peak, Radhost.

Hotels and chalets are concentrated on the leeside of Mount Radhost. Pustevny was founded in 1891 by the Mountain Tourist Association. The name was derived from the fact that until the end of the 18th century, people lived there in recluse.

The historical reality and legendary image of Mount Radhost have been preserved and handed down by the generations who have lived in this district. In folk mythology, Mount Radhost is home of the pagan god, Radegast. It was also the site of an ancient community where cult of the sun worshippers lit fires to celebrate the solstice.

Today, the Cyril and Methodius Chapel, statue and a cross stand at the peak of Mount Radhost to commemorate the delivery of Christianity and the alphabet to the Moravians in 863 A.D. From December 6th until December 20th of this year, I will be leading a group of Texas to witness how Christmas holidays were celebrated by our forefathers before leaving for Texas, 150 years ago. This will be prepared by the museum staff. I hope to describe the festivity on my return. There are also festivities which are held every Saturday and Sunday, from May until the middle of September at the amphitheater and at several small stages on the museum grounds. Attendance averages between 3,000 and 12,000 people per weekend.

There are also week day guided tours for the hundreds of tourists who come to visit from every part of the world.

A record of 354 people from Texas alone came to Roznov and the museum this year along with a performing group representing the Fayette County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas which performed at all three amphitheaters during the July Fourth weekend.

First place winners in the (13-17 year) Senior Group Talent Competition were Sarah Dluhos, Curtis Dorotik, Michael Kaspar, Lenice Kaspar, Valerie Roye, Craig Dorotik, Jeanine Dorotik, and Craig Dornak, all of Lodge No. 30, who performed a self-choreographed jitterbug dance routine to "Born to Boogie."

District Five Hosts Halloween Party Dear Readers and Youth Club Members: The youth club members from District Five had a Halloween Party on Saturday, October 23 at Lodge 142. We had a lot of people attend.

The costume contest was divided into four age groups. I was a fairy princess and won third place. My sister, Karen, dressed as a baby and won first place in her age group. There were many good costumes. Congratulations to all of the winners.

I could not give a list of all of the winners because I don't know all of their names. Keith Kieschnick, president of Lodge 142, was in charge of the music.

Jeanette Dames of Lodge 88 said that she enjoyed helping make the selections and also getting to be a D.J. We did apple bobbing and broke two pinatas which were full of can::'.y.

Everyone had a great time and looks `-ward to next year's party.

Dear Readers, The Snook Youth Club had their monthly meeting on November 3rd at the SPJST Hall at 6:30 p.m. The meeting was well attended.

We discussed the scholarship fund, charity projects and our Christmas program.
