The "Sentimental Journey" Continues .. .

Texas traveler gets an inside look at Frenstat by Louis J. Polansky Lodge 1, Fayetteville PART FOUR This week, we join our Texas traveler atop the Mountain Radhost, where it is July 5th, and pilgrims are celebrating the holiday of Saints Cyril and Methodius. My wife and Hedwicka went up the mountain. They passed the large statue of Radhost, a pagan god, and got up to the crest of the mountain where there are statues of the Czech saints and a chapel. My wife said it was like the old celebration we used to have at Fayetteville, with people carrying banners and a brass band playing in a procession including a priest and altar boys.

While they were going up, my group decided to go down the mountain. We went to a ski lift where little ferris wheel type chairs come around and you have to jump on the seat backwards. After getting on the ski lift, it started down the mountain—which was a lot higher than I thought. There was a little pipe that came over the seat and you had something to hold on to. The scenery was beautiful and somewhat frightening, watching the little cars go up and down. One lady and her child forgot to put the pipe down. It took about 30 minutes to get down the mountain and I told John that I guess my wife would have to walk down because I knew she would never ride in this thing. When we neared the bottom, I saw

that you really have to be fit to get out of the chair. You have to jump sideways and duck so it doesn't bump you. This was quite an experience, but we made it without a scratch. We then started walking toward Frenstat. There was a mountain stream along the road and it roared along. There were a lot of people driving and walking along the road and John said that we would catch a bus later. As we walked, I looked at the homes along the road and found them to be very comparable to some of our newer housing. They all had thick walls because it gets cold here in the winter and most were of stucco or brick. We walked on a couple of miles and came to a restaurant-tavern and decided

to eat lunch. When we sat down, a man and his wife sitting at another table came up and said that they recognized me from the previous day at Roznov. They could speak a little English and teased me about the Dallas series on television. We ordered our dinner and I ordered a bowl of chicken noodle soup, pickles, bread and butter. Our visitors told me that they both worked for the government in Prague. He asked me how I liked the Czech Republic and other general questions. He then asked me about American coins and I gave him a Susan B. Anthony dollar, a Kennedy half, quarter and other change I had for his collection. (Continued on page 5)
