Sentimental Tourney...

The adventures of a "Texan Wallach" in the Czech Republic by Louis J. Polansky Lodge 1, Fayetteville PART THREE When we had planned our trip to the CzeCh Republic, I had decided to represent Texas in dress except for the hat. The hat I wore had been given to me by the people at the museum last year when they toured Fayetteville. This hat is black, has a wide straight brim, high top and a ribbon around the top which hangs down the neck. This is a Wallachian hat. The Wallachians are general the people from around Roznov and Frenstat who were nomadic until they settled here several hundred years ago. These are mountain people who love the woods and the hills. I didn't even know they existed until 1992, and by golly, I now consider myself a "Wallach," some 140 years removed since my grandparents started coming to the United States.

"I now consider myself a 'Wallach,' some 140 years removed since my grandparents started coming to the United States. This hat is usually worn at what they call "slavnosts," which we here call "feasts." The Czechs have one of these every week and they stay up drinking all night long during the festival. When a Wallach is going to celebrate and drink, they put a green twig in the hat band to signify their happiness. I got me a piece of greenery and put it in my hat band too. After the contest, I walked back to the hotel about a mile and took a short rest. Later on, several of us started back to the museum and decided to hire a horse drawn buggy type vehicle which had two horses. I got upon the front seat with the driver and he let me drive the buggy. After a while, I got off the path and let the driver take over. When we got to the museum, we found that we all had to walk up this large hill to another amphitheater to practice for our performance on Sunday. I forgot my guitar and had to go up the hill twice.
