Scholarship Drive kicks off October 1 . .
100 Pennies Drive Aims High in '93 It's that time of year again. Too late for summer picnics and too early for Christmas—hut just right for kicking off the annual SPJST scholarship fund drive. The Scholarship Program, which has been in effect since 1982, is meant to encourage young members to further their education and to help them achieve career goals. Funded by the SPJST and voluntary contributions by SPJST members, the Scholarship Program is administered by the SPJST Supreme Lodge Annually, the Supreme Lodge contributes $25,000 to the fund. Additional money is collected through the "100 Pennies Scholarship Drive" and the "Memorial Scholarship Fund." In 1993, SPJST awarded 84 $500 scholarships to students attending accredited colleges and technical training institutes. "Every penny that you contribute goes into the Scholarship Fund," says Brother Frank Klinkovsky, State Fraternal Activities Coordinator. "A donation of $1 or more per member would he greatly appreciated and help enable a good many of our younger
members to achieve a higher education," he adds. In 1993, the goal of the 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive is to raise $10,000. As in previous years, the progress of the 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive will be posted regularly in the Vestnik. The names of all donors will also be published. Amounts donated will not he included • In addition to individual contributions, Brother Klinkovsky encourages local lodges and youth clubs to donate to the fund. "On behalf of the many young people who will benefit from this program, we want to say thank you for your past and for your continued support," he says. Members or lodge groups wanting to contribute to either the "100 Pennies Scholarship Drive" Or to the "SPJST Memorial Scholarship Fund" may do so by completing the form on page 15 of this issue. PART TWO My first impression of Frenstat was somewhat mixed, for here you have a town about 700 years old and you expect to see old buildings and church steeples. The first thing we saw were a good many high rise apartment buildings mixed in with the old buildings. On the outskirts of town were two extremely large high rise buildings in evidently very poor condition. Our driver told us that this was where the Russian troops were staying during their occupation of Frenstat. Evidently, no one liked these troops and contempt for the Russians was very vocal from the driver.
