Sister oudek worked closely with the SPJST in her effort to preserve the meaning of the kroje. The SPJST Museum in Temple includes a large collection of dolls dressed in a variety of kroje donated by Sister Houdek.

Matthew is a member of Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood and a graduate of Penelope High School. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Gary Beseda and his grandpaents are Mrs. and Mrs. Andrew Beseda and Mrs. Ruth Krizan.

Matthew plans to attend McLennan Community College this fall and possibly Tarleton State University.

Dawn, who graduated with an associate degree in business plans to work and eventually go back to school to get her bachelor's degree.

Derek is planning to attend college and will be entering the medical field.

There's No Time Like the Present

How old do you have to be to start thinking about life insurance and financial planning? It's almost like asking, "How old do you have to be to start thinking about your future?" In both cases, the answer is, "It's never too soon to start."

This past week I had a chance to visit with State Field Manager Gene McBride on SPJST's "College Assistance Program." The plan is structured in such a way that it provides a young person with a significant amount of insurance coverage and at the same time builds a "nest egg" that can be applied toward college or any other meaningful endeavor when the child reaches age 18.

To illustrate how the plan works, Brother McBride provided me with a sample payment schedule combining a Modified Life Certificate for a face amount of $22,500 with an annual premium of $63 and a Flexible Annuity Premium of $600 annually. Maintaining this payment schedule for 18 years will yield approximately $19,650 in the annuity fund (assuming a 6 percent rate of return).

Under current tax laws, a ten percent penalty tax is applied to the interest earned upon withdrawal of the funds.

Assuming that the certificate holder decides to "cash-in" the annuity, the great thing is that the life insurance coverage-$22,500-remains in force as long as the certificate holder continues make a modest annual premium payment of $63.

Without a doubt, the legal advisor's position carries with it a great deal of accountability and responsibility. As dictated by our SPJST By-Laws, the legal advisor "represents the Society in all legal matters." Further, "he consults with and advises the officers and directors concerning any legal questions pertaining to the Society." Additionally, the legal advisor gives title opinions on the validity of the titles to real estate being offered as as security for a loan and handles the closing of real estate loans.

As many of you know, Brother Sidney Kacir serves as our Society's legal advisor, a position that he has held since 1981 when he was appointed by the Supreme Lodge to fill the unexpired term of Brother Reuben Lesikar, who died in office.

Three successive conventions, beginning in 1984, have viewed it in the best interest of the Society to reelect Brother Kacir as the SPJST legal advisor.

Preamble Helps Define Mission

Last week, I made reference to the first anniversary of the 26th Convention of the SPJST in Victoria. In trying to illustrate the decision-making authority possessed by the delegates, I noted that I had been impressed by all of the business that they were able to complete in just three days-including the election of Supreme Lodge officers, directors and standing committee members.

Ingredients: 2 1/2 cups milk 1 1/2 package dry yeast 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup shorten ng 1 teaspoon salt 2 whole eggs 2 egg yolks 6 1/2 cups flour

Directions Pour warm milk over yeast and let dissolve and rise to top. Add some flour and mix. Let stand for a while.

Add remainder of ingredients and stir well. Let rise double in hulk. Roll into balls and let rise again. Punch holes into centers and fill with favorite fruit.

Let rise a little more before baking at 375 degrees until light brown or the way you prefer.

Brush with oleo or butter after they are removed from the oven. Makes about 60 kolaches, depending on what size you make the balls.

Colorful Kroje (Continued from page 1 At the invitation of Ms. Houdek, my first participation in the "Parade of Costumes" was in 1972 during Czech Day at the State Fair in Dallas, Texas.

The Parade of Costumes is one very visible way of helping to promote and keep alive the traditions of Czech culture. Throughout the years, men, women and children have taken great pride in wearing their traditional costumes and participating at various civic functions, festivals, and religious celebrations across the state. A growing interest in the Czech culture is evident by the everincreasing number of annual Czech festivals now being held throughout the United States. Folk costumes are an indispensible part of folk songs, music and dances and are the pride of our heritage.

There are many varieties of costumes—reportedly more than 550 of either Czech or Slovak origin. Out of this group, 27 of them are more familiar because they bear the names of important cultural centers. Each county has its own costume and each village within that county has a variation on that theme.

The differences in the costumes reflect the differences in geography and influence of neighboring cultures. To a great extent, the look of the kroje depended not only on the district of origin, but also on the purpose for which they were used.

Footwear varies from black boots to low-heeled slippers. Some of the boots are high and accordion-pleated. On others, the soles and heels are joined with wooden pegs and have metal taps on the heels. Black or white stockings are worn with low cut slippers or moccasins.

Both the Czech and Slovak Republics are rich in folklore. In some regions the folk songs, dances and costumes still survive. Many popular festivals are held annually throughout the region. Other important events, such as births, christenings, weddings, festivals, funerals and holidays bring out the people in costumes. It is not uncommon in some areas to experience an actual wedding ceremony where the bride and bridesmaids are dressing in kroje and the groomsmen are clad in national costumes. And, sometimes at a child's funeral service, there will be a procession of children wearing kroje, each carrying a flower that is dropped into the grave, singing, "S-Bohem, S-Bohem (Good-bye, Good-bye).

Lodge 6, Cojonwood Congratulates Couple on 50th Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Henry Moravec Sr. of West celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception from 2 until 8 p.m. on May 2, 1993 at Lone Star Hall in West.

Hosting the reception were the couple's children: Daniel and Carol Moravec, Ernest Moravec, Henry and Janice Moravec, Jr., Alvin and Cathy Moravec and Willie and Michelle Moravec.

Brother Moravec and the former Elsie Hegar were married May 2, 1943 at the First Presbyterian Church in West.

The couple has 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Five D.Y.C. Extends Thanks to Youth Supporters District

Dear Members, I would like to take a few moments of your attention to let everyone know that we have very few worries when it comes to the Youth of today. I recently attended the Leader in Training (L.I.T). Retreat sponsored by the Youth Department of SPJST at Camp Lone Star near LaGrange, Texas. Brother Louis Hanus (District Five Director), Barbara Linney (Assistant D.Y.C. and Youth Leader of Lodge No. 88, Houston), Dottie Watkins (Assistant D.Y.0 .and Youth Leader of Lodge No. 172, Pasadena), and our very own Dennis Hermis (Lodge No. 142, Houston), along with 13 L.I.T.'s, spent the weekend learning and doing different things together along with all of the other D.Y.Cs and assistants from all over the state.

Believe me, Joni Lange, State Youth Director, and President Howard Leshikar, really did a great—or should I say—did a FANTASTIC job of getting this retreat together. The young people are to be commended for the dedication that they want to give back to the Youth Program by being leaders in training.

The dedication of all the D.Y.C.s and leaders who give of their time to help mold our young people has to be appreciated..

There was never a dull moment— from the time we arrived on Friday night

until we left on Sunday afternoon. We learned a lot, renewed old friendships and just had a really good time.

I enjoyed my time with all of the young people. Likewise, I really enjoyed Bessie Petr (District Three D.Y.C), she really makes the best brownies and she shared them with everyone there. Brother Leshikar gave a very good talk on "handshakes." Sometime, when you see him, or he comes to your lodge, ask him to tell you the story. You will really enjoy it.

With regards to Sister Joni Lange, we have a lot of respect for her leadership and the way that she is bringing innovative things to do and learn in the youth program. Keep up the good work, Joni.

Brother Hanus is District Five's number one camper and he enjoyed every moment that he spent at the L.I.T. Retreat Weekend.

We would like to see more of our district directors come and see what we are doing with the youth. I, and all of the DYCs and the leaders there salute you for your hard work and love that you gave to help make us "THE BEST WE CAN BE." Fraternally, Marie Stayton, District Five D.Y.C.

Five Cook Book Could Still Use Your Recipes District

District Five is working to put together a new cook book. We would like to have a variety of recipes from canning and meat dishes to desserts, vegetables, stews and breads.

Also, to keep our Czech (German, Polish, etc.) heritage alive through the younger chefs, any dish that you would like to share with others that was your mother's or grandmother's will be considered for printing in the book.

All recipes will acknowledge the person or persons who submitted them.

Likewise, we are soliciting advertisers who might want to place courtesy announcements in the the cookbook.

SPJST sales representatives might want

to take advantage of this opportunity to get their names and sales messages in print.

Proceeds from the sales of the cook book will be split between the District General Fund and the District Youth Fund. We want to make this a cook book that will be used and enjoyed by all.

Mr. and Mrs. Henry Moravec, Sr.

Sister Elsie Moravec has been a member of Lodge 6, Cottonwood since 1934, having already received her 50year pin several years ago. She also has two sisters that are still members of Lodge 6, Wilhelmina Truitt of Elm Mott, Texas and Marie Margulieux of Garden Grove, California. A third sister, Lydia Emily Krizan, passed away in 1989 in Medford, Oklahoma.

Elsie's father, John Hegar, was one of those on the lodge Building Committee in 1902. The first building was 50 feet long and 40 feet wide. The total cost of the new home was $641.10 and there were ample funds to pay it all. The first lodge meeting was held September 11, 1902.

Congratulations, again, to Henry and Elsie Moravec on their Golden Anniversary. The membership of our lodge wishes them many more happy and healthy years to come.

Lodge 17 Member Completes Basic Training Marine PFC John P. Beasley, son of Jerry and Lillian Beasley of Cooks Point, Texas, has completed his Basic Training at Camp Pendelton in San Diego Californi and John P. Beasley MCI' training at Camp Onofre, California. He is currently stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, where he is training as a hygiene equipment operator.

John is a 1989 graduate of Caldwell High School and a 1992 graduate of Texas State Technical College.

He is the grandson of Paul and Vlasta Surovik of College Station and Glenn Beasley of Gilmer, Texas. John and his family are all members of Ldoge No. 17, New Tabor.

There were 17 in attendance. VP-FAC Leslie Gustafson won the "SPJST Lodge 18 Lottery" and he, in turn, donated the cash winnings back to the Mother Lodge.

Reports were heard from George Liardon, Home Dues Secretary; Gladys Mogonye, Ticket Chairperson, "Curly" Gustafson, Bar Chairperson; Irene Helgren, House Committee Chairperson and Ruth Bowen, Youth Leader.

House Committee Chairperson IRene Relgren requested some help with the Spanish rentals. Jim Mogonye volunteered to help Irene on these special occasions. There was also some discussion with regards to hiring security for these Spanish functions. Leslie Gustafson said that he would talk to the proper authorities which would solve the problems we are encountering.

Special "Thanks" was given to all those dedicated members that have faithfully given of their time to mow the grass, tend the bar, serve as greeters at the door, and volunteer to do all those jobs that go into making a fraternal organization function. Also "Thanks" to Bo Brian for painting the flag pole.

The July meeting date will be on Tuesday, July 13 at 6:30 p.m. at Charlie's Steak House in Pflugerville.

Don't forget to mark your calendar and reserve Sunday, August 8, 1993, from 2 until 8 p.m. That is the day of the "Elgin Polka Fest." Three (3) bands— Leo Majek, the Vrazels, and Fritz Hodde and The Fabulous Six Plus 2 will be performing.

Dear Members and Friends, Lodge 24 invites everyone to participate in its Summer Countywide Garage Sale and Auction to be held at Flag Hall on Saturday, July 10. Flag Hall is located approximately 10 miles east of Temple, off Highway 53.

Already, a good number of sellers have signed up to participate in this sale, offering merchandise ranging from antiques and collectibles and arts and crafts, to household items, clothing, musical instruments and,homemade food items. Seller spaces are $20 each and can be reserved by calling David Vanicek at (817) 985-2228. To avoid disappointment, sellers are encouraged to call early to reserve their space. Outdoor spaces will also be available should anyone have larger items such as farm equipment or automobiles to sell.

An added attraction to the sale will be a general merchandise auction beginning at 4:30 p.m. And, as always, an ample supply of good food and beverages will be available throughout the day of the sale.

Admission to the sale will be free.

June Lodge Meeting Lodge members met Monday, June 14, for their regular monthly meeting.

All officers, with the exception of Secretary Arleen Mayeux, were in attendance.

Board members Johnny Chervenka and Wilbert Mikeska were also not in attendance. One guest, Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar, was present.

President Carol Chervenka called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. Following the Pledge of Allegiance, members remained standing in a silent tribute to deceased lodge members.

The board report noted that the trustees had met twice since the previous lodge meeting and offered several recommendations aimed at increasing and diversifying member participation in lodge activities and stimulating new member growth.

In new business, lodge members discussed the July 10 Countywide Sale and Auction and the 50-year pin presentation scheduled to take place at the July 12 meeting.

In his presentation to lodge members, President Leshikar complimented those in attendance for the productivity displayed during their meeting and for their recent successes with the Czech Polka Festival, Mother's Day Barbecue, and Youth Dances. He wished the lodge continued success with their upcoming sale day and auction.

President Leshikar then spoke briefly about personal initiative before announcing that Harold Vanicek, Jr., a member of the Lodge 24 Youth Club, was the winner of the SPJST Flag Day Essay Contest. President Leshikar congratulated Harold and presented him with a check for $100 for his efforts.

Members celebrating birthdays in June were Vlasta Marek, Terry Coots, Pat Vanicek, Andy Baker and Amy Macek. Anniversary celebrants were Charles and Ann Schneider and Debbie and Freddie Veselka.

Winner of the Father's Day door prize was Howard Leshikar.

Karel Jonas, No. 28, East Bernard to Meet July 11 Lodge

Dear Members, Lodge Karel Jonas will hold its July monthly meeting on the second Sunday, the 11th, at 2 p.m., in the meeting room at 106 Leveridge Street on the ground floor of the SPJST Hall Building.

On the agenda, besides the usual reports and business needing immediate attention, will be the presentation of 50year pins to members who have reached that plateau of membership. District Seven Director Brother Matt Vanek will make these presentation.

There is a fraternal hour luncheon scheduled.

Of the eleven members who will receive the pins, one was eligible in 1991. After checking records, it was found that Sister Mary J. Kocurek was past due for her pin. Lodge No. 74, Lovelady Reports on Lodge Activities Dear Members and Guests, Here we are again. I guess a lot of you throughout the SPJST wondered why you haven't heard from Lodge No. 74 in a long time.

For a period of several months, our financial standing was to low that it was difficult to compete with other places that sponsored games to generate income. With some financial help from the Supreme Lodge, we were able to invest in equipment and handle other expenses. We're doing fair now and hoping that it will get better.

Win and Joyce Bradshaw are really putting in most of the work for the lodge for no pay. Our lodge should be proud of the work that they do.

We are also planning to put up a real nice SPJST sign at the entrance to the lodge. The following have contributed money for the sign: Don Gordon, Chester Shmoldas, Howard Leshikar, Burl Hobson, Joyce Rains, Lovelady Bank, First National Bank, Dan Curry, Mildred Shmoldas, Mildred Bruton, Joyce Bradshaw and Win Bradshaw. So far, contributions totaling $715 have been raised.

On March 6, 1993, we had a big name hand for the dance. We also had a big crowd and the lodge was left with a big mess. My wife and I had our anniversary on Sunday, March 7. That was our celebration as we both worked hard to clean up the lodge. I wonder how much money others would want for doing that.

We will now be having our monthly meetings on the first Tuesday of every month, beginning at 7 p.m. Our game nights are Monday and Thursday, beginning at 7 p.m. and every second Saturday dance.

80, Holland Reports on June Meeting

Dear Members and Friends, The June meeting of Lodge 80, Holland was called to order by President Harold Rohde on Sunday, June 6 at 2 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and a moment of silence was observed for departed members.

by Secretary Treasurer Glen Latham.

Brother Glen also gave the reports from the bar, kitchen, bingo and hall rental with all doing well. He also read a "thank you" from the Holland Senior class for the lovely luncheon that the lodge provided for them. It was signed by all members of the senior class and the high school faculty. Also, a "thank you" from the American Legion Auxiliary was received for the kind donation and assistance with the poppy sale for the veterans on Memorial Day. The picnic was a nice success with the following winning at the drawing: James (Bubba) Hill, Vincent Cortese, Jean Nance, Kelly Courluy and Victoria Pajestka.

We welcomed the following new members into our lodge: Stephanie

Young, Martha Holmes, Shirley Kosh, Julian Kosh, Suzanne Berry, Jacob McKenzie, Robert Lee McKenzie, Alicia McKenzie, Taylor Simmons and Leela Rousch. Hope to see you at our next meeting.

A discussion was again held on the answering machine for the hall. The machine discussion was tabled until the next meeting.

The next meeting was moved to Saturday, July 3 at 3:30 for two reasons: The 4th is on a Sunday and due to most members being at the hall at 4:30 for super games, we will meet an hour before and then set up for the games. So, remember the change.

Louise Ivicic celebrated her birthday in June.

84, Dallas Reports on edge Activities

Dear Members, It's the Princess Ball on Saturday, July 17th. Music will be furnished by the Mynarciks, followed by the Czech Harvesters on August 7th. Then it will be Fritz Hodde and the Fabulous Six on Saturday, August 21, which starts a two-day celebration at Lodge 84 to celebrate the burning of its mortgage note on August 22nd. We will also be celebrating our lodge's 83rd anniversary.

50-year members will be honored on Saturday, during the dance. On Sunday there will be dinner catered by Sister Bessie Petr. On the menu are pork loin and all the trimmings. Members are asked to bring desserts. Come out and you can enjoy the guest speaker, memorial service, note burning, youth program and a membership photograph that will be taken. It's been several years since we all got together to pose for a profes sional photographer, so make a note of this day and see the changes the years have made. The photographs hang on the wall, so take a look.

Our Czech Fest is scheduled for September 19th. Sister Bessie Petr will be doing the catering for a barbecue dinner with all the trimmings. Members are again asked to bring desserts. Tickets will be $6 for adults and $3 for children ages 12 and under. Look for more details on this celebration in the Vestnik as the date approaches.

The Fourth of July will be celebrated this year at Sokol on Greenville. Lodge 84 is responsible for "make ready" on the barbecue that will be served—so will you help? Serving starts at noon—so come in any time to offer any help and enjoy a good afternoon with your fraternal brothers and sisters.

Lodge 87, Temple Reports on June Meeting President Ladis Navratil called the regular meeting of SPJST Lodge No. 87 to order on Wednesday evening, June 9th at 6:30 p.m.

Flag Bearer Lad Zatopek led the lodge in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Deceased members were remembered with a silent tribute.

Mary Zatopek gave her report and the following new members were accepted into Lodge No. 87: Randy Coufal, Courtney Jones, Jack Weldon Jones, Amanda Michelle Burch and James Randall Brodie. We welcome these new members.

Vice President Ed Reisner reported on upcoming events and for members to read the Vestnik.

President Navratil introduced special guest Gene McBride from the Home Office. He presented a very informative program to the lodge. Mr. McBride presented an outstanding achievement certificate to Ladis Navratil and also praised the other insurance sales representatives for their work.

A covered dish meal was served to members and guests before the business meeting. Dorothy Chervenka gave the prayer.

The next meeting will be on Wednesday, July 14th at 7 p.m. Lad and Mary Zatopek will be hosting the July meeting.

Ice cream will be served.

Get well wishes to all convalescing.

88, Houston Reports on Lodge Activities

Lodge 88 had their monthly meeting on Monday, June 14, 1993 at 7:30 p.m.

President Jerome Ermis opened the meeting with Marlene Migl and Michelle Linney presenting the flags. President Jerry announced that we had two deceased members in May. They were Frances Seeberger and Harley Hooker.

Our attendance was very good. Secretary Mildred Holeman read the minutes which were approved. There was no correspondence. Mildred read the names of our applicants and moved that they be accepted. All were accepted.

President Jerry then gave a report on our most successful HomecomingSplash Day Celebration. Pat Holeman is our temporary secretary-treasurer while Shirley Stonaker is recovering from her illness. Pat read the financial report and FIC Home Alexander gave his report, which is always very good. He also announced that he has another Defensive Driving Course scheduled for July 1516. He reported that he already had 27 registered for the class.

Chairman Josephine Pflughaupt of the Lodge 88 Scholarship Committee announced that four students each received $500 scholarships. They are: (1.) Sandra Kay Budnick of BeIlville High School. She is the daughter of Edmund and Dorothy Budnick. She will be attending Texas A&M. (2.) Cheryl Denise Heine of Lutheran High North. She is the daughter of Clinton and Carolyn Heine. She will attend Texas Lutheran College in Seguin.

Viola Cox, chairman of the Entertainment Committee gave her report: First of all, she has the schedule ready from July 1993 through December 1993 and she would like for all who love to dance to stop by Lodge 88 and get some schedules to give them to your friends. We have some good dances scheduled for July—only eight dances.

She mentioned that the A. Pierson Band with the Guy Lombardo music for Friday, July 23rd will be $10 per person, and also called attention to the "Summer Youth Special Party and Dance" scheduled for July 30 with country-and-western music by Texas Brew. Tickets will he S5 each. All July dances are listed on the last page in the Vesinik or you can see your dance schedule for details.

The reports from the committees were good. Secretary Mildred will have the details on these committees, so I'll leave it to her. We also had a report from Chairman of the Board Karl Lindemann.

His report was brief, addressing mostly maintenance issues and that the Board has plenty of work all the time. There were also reports from the Bar Committee by Royal Warnasch; the Kitchen Committee by King B. Hegwood; the Social Night ,Committee by Willie Wehring and the Birthday Club report by Lowrina Lindemann. Lowrina's report was in my Birthday Club report last week. Blue Room Manager Margaret Allbritton was absent due to illness.

President Ed Miculka of the Men's Club gave a brief report about all of the work the men are doing. For instance, they are killing the weeds—which is

really a task this year with all that rain.

Anyway, at the end of his report, Ed had a story about our beloved Mr. "Bill" Souchek. He was finishing furniture in the back yard with varnish. All of a sudden, a beautiful bird flew over his paraphernalia and fell in it—and of course, died. Mr. Souchek looked up and said, "What a beautiful way to go and with a beautiful finish."

We had several hospitalized members: Lad wily, with pneumonia; Frank Tilich, for tests; and Alfred Marshall, for tests. I do hope that all can be corrected with medication. They are all at home recovering.

Karl Lindemann, who is in charge of th swimming pool, brought his pool manager to the meeting and introduced him to all of us. He's a fine man, so let's work with him. Swimming lessons are available, so contact our office at 8695767 and Pat will give you the right directions.

Tom Marsh, chairman of the Auditing Committee, gave his report.

Our District Five officers gave their reports briefly. istrict Five Director Louis Harms always talks about our young people. He went to La Grange to the L.I.T. meeting on June 6 and had a big time.

Secretary Dorothy Pflughaupt spoke for District Five President Evelyn Mikeska, who couldn't attend. She announced that the District Five meeting on September 19 under the trees in the back since Lodge 88 is rented. Dorothy announced that the meat will be furnished. I will write the particulars later.

DYC Marie Stayton thanked us for the scholarships.

State Sales Field Representative Helen Hegwood, who is also our Guide, gave the names of her leading sales representatives. Helen enjoyed tremendous success with the spinning wheel on Splash Day and thanked all who made it possible.

President Naomi Spencer of the Dramatic Club (Hlahol) has a free program on September 26. Food and pastry will be served and the program starts at 2 p.m.

Jim Rohde, president of the lodge orchestra, attended our meeting and we enjoyed having him very much.

Mary Kosut is always last to report.

She's our benevolence lady. She reported on several months of activity. She, too, had been ill. It's a time-consuming job.

Lodge 139, Danbury Reports on June Meeting At the June 9 meeting, Liba Lostak led Danbury Lodge No. 139 in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance after the meeting was called to order by President Lonnie Lostak.

A moment of silence was observed in memory of recently departed member Elvin Shock.

Minutes were read by Secretary Lorenda Baldwin and reports were given

by Sister Lorenda, Treasurer Eloise Lostak and Vice President Monte Baldwin. Correspondence was read. rother Tommie Lostak was welcomed back after surgery. He is continuing to make a good recovery.

Wesley Baldwin was congratulated for making the Minor League All-Star team. He played in the outfield and was a pitcher on the Cardinals team which took first place in the league. The team was coached by Brother Monte.

Several guests attended the socialbirthday party for two of our young members, Liba Lostak and Wesley Baldwin, after the meeting. Liba had a lovely birthday cake and Wesley had a huge chocolate chip cookie decorated as a baseball. Everyone enjoyed the sumptuous meal prepared for the occasion.

Lodge 142, frouston 7eports on June Lodge Meeting At 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 13, 1993, President Keith Kieschnick called our regular monthly meeting to order. We had 41 members and four guests present.

All present stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag. All remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our departed sister, Emily Mynar. May she rest in peace.

The secretary held the roll call of officers. All were present except for Guide Frank Tumis and Fraternal Activities Coordinator Marilyn Spivey. President Keith Kieschnick appointed Brother Henry Linhart to serve as the Guide for the day.

The financial secretary-treasurer's report was given by Rosie Tumis. The Board of Trustees and Bar Report were read by Henry Hermis. The Youth Club Report was given by Youth Leader Elizabeth Hermis. She thanked everyone who donated for the prize drawing and cake sale. John Buri, our youth member, had just returned from a 10-day trip to Germany, Austria, Switzerland and France. He reported a very educational and enjoyable experience.

The Sick Committee reported that Frank Tumis was in the hospital and was doing fine after a lens implant.

We also heard that Sister Henrietta Veselka was in the hospital for tests.

We're hoping that everyone is feeling much better at this time.

Visitors recognized at this meeting were Joe Braunagel, JoAnn Buri, Jo Buri and Joe Gambil. We welcome all of our visitors and look forward to seeing them again at tour next meeting.

Everyone who came to our 20th anniversary celebration of the dedication of our lodge building reported a great time. Good food, good music and most of all good fellowship.

On Sunday, June 27, District Five held its YAD at Lodge 88, Houston.

Thanks to all who went out and supported our youth. They are the backbone of our future.

Those celebrating birthdays in June were as follows: Elizabeth Hermis, Charles Motl, Henry Hermis, Sr., and Curtis Kieschnick.

The oldest member prize (for the one who had not already won) went to Pat Schleder at this meeting.

The capsule prize for $10 went unclaimed at the meeting due to the absence of Ronnie Wishkoski. Melissa Linhart was also absent for the second drawing. Next month's prize increases to $20. Come to our meeting. You could be the "lucky one!"

Lodge 154, Fort Worth Reports on Lodge Activities Dear Members and Friends, I will be leaving on June 20 for a three-week stay in St. Louis, so thought that I would remind you of our July 11 meeting at 3 p.m. This has really been a busy month.

A large group of our members were in the Sokol Slet program in Houston and we all arrived home safely late Sunday night.

The program was beautiful and we are so proud of Sokol Fort Worth.

Brother Charlie Peterzelka was a great host, and to you all, we extend our thanks for your hospitality.

To me, it was great seeing so many of my friends that I have had since we lived in Houston for 12 years until 1941. It was a true fraternal get together.

Vice President of the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce Sister Donna Parker attended the All American Cities National Civic League when Fort Worth as named the All-American City in Tampa, Florida.

Sister Christina (Tina) Harrison got a scholastic, academic and Prestige Physical Fitness Award for her sixth year in a row.

Her brother, Brother David Harrison, Phi Beta Theta Kappa Society, got an International Scholastic Order two-year scholarship. Keep up the good work. I will be visiting them in St. Louis (my great-niece and great nephew.).

Lodge 175 held its quarterly meeting on June 8, 1993 at the George Memorial Library in Richmond, Texas. We discussed that it has been approved that Lodge 175 could hold its meetings quarterly.

Eddie Sebesta reported on completing the Quick Start program. We also discussed how we could help the sales representatives to sell more insurance policies.

Slavic Heritage Festival Slated on UST Campus The 32st annual Slavic Heritage Festival, the oldest ethnic event in Houston, will be held Sunday, July 11, beginning at noon, at the Jerabeck Center on the campus of the University of St. Thomas, Montrose Blvd. at West Alabama.

The festival is sponsored annually by the Croatian, Czech, Polish, Slovene and Ukrainian communities. This year the Ukrainian community takes the lead in hosting the festival and will begin the festivities with a tribute to Sts. Cyril and Methodius by celebrating Mass in Ukrainian Catholic Rite Saturday, July 10, at 5 p.m. at the Pokrova Ukrainian Catholic Church, 9102 Meadowshire (the Gulf Bank exit off 1-45 North). The public is cordially invited to the Mass and the buffet dinner and entertainment which will follow in the parish hall.

Ennis Sewing Circle Reports on Club Activities The Circle met on June 10, 1993. We had a good attendance. Our visitors were Loretta Laza, Patty Laza, Randy Trojacek, Joe Vlk, Jerry Kohn and Charles Kosarek.

The meeting was called to order by President Sadie Kubin. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Secretary Linda Trojacek read the minutes. They were approved as read. Treasurer Mildred Trojacek gave the financial report. It was approved as delivered. In the Sunshine report, Stacie Hejny sent "get well" cards to Sisters Mary Patak, Willie Mae Vavra and Irene Tinney. Irene sent a "thank you" note for the card and money gift. Stacie sent birthday greetings to sisters who cannot attend the meetings.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to the June birthday celebrants.

A "thank you" note was received from Anton and Frances Vinkler for the money sent to them for the damage that they suffered from the tornado.

Sister Linda Trojacek gave a money donation for having her quilt quilted.

Sisters Alene Skrivanek and Julie Harris gave a money donation to the Circle.

The door prizes were furnished by Sisters Julie Harris and Rose Bednar.

The lucky winners were Mary Polasek and Sylvia I 27novsky.

Congratulations! The following young ladies graduated from high school: Sheila Trojacek, daughter of Sister Linda and Victor Trojacek; Lisa Zabojnik, daughter of Sister Georgia and Victor Zabojnik and Lori Laznovsky, daughter of Sister Lil and Larry Laznovsky. Lori and Lisa both received SPJST scholarships.

A "thinking of you" card, signed by everyone present, was sent to Bill Foit, who has not been feeling too well. Bill is the husband of Sister Doris Foit. Bill, we hope that you are feeling better.

Congratulations! Sarabeth Nicole wishes to announce the arrival of a baby sister, Savannah Bre-Ann. She weighed 9-pounds, seven ounces. Parents are Shalyn and Darrel Trantham of Godley, Texas. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Trantham of Fort Worth and Bill and Cathy Skrivanek of Dallas. Great-grandparents are Sister Alene and Willie Skrivanek of Ennis.

Congratulations to Christanne and Russell Sharp, who were married on June 5th. Bohemia, the western part the Czech. Republic, is drained by the Labe (Elbe) northwestward to the North Sea. The Odra (Oder) floats from northern Moravia to the altic Sea and the river Morava drains the rest of Moravia into the Danube. The Czech Republic has four cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants— Prague, Plzen, Brno, and Ostrava; only Prague has more than a million people.

Our people established themselves in their present territory in the 5th Century. They later formed the Great Moravian Empire which was christianized by St. Cyril & Methodius in the 9th Century. Great Moravia covered Slovakia, Southern Poland, Ruthenia, whole of present Hungary, parts of northwestern Yugoslavia, Bohemia and Moravia itself. When great Moravia was destroyed by Asiatic Hungarians, Slovaks were enslaved for a thousand years by Hungary, while Moravians

became a part of Premyslide Dukedom of Bohemia. In 1526, both Czechs and Slovaks became subjects of Ferdinand the First of Austria and stayed under Habsburg rule until the end of World War I in 1918. The Republic of Czechoslovakia was born on the 28th of October of the same year. On January 1, 1993, the country of Czechoslovakia split into Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

St. Cyril & Methodius are national saints of Czechs and Slovaks, thus both nationalities and representatives of other Slavic nations gloriously celebrated their millenary arrival to Great Moravia at Velehrad Shrine—the fabled capital of the past Great Moravian Empire on July 5, 1863. Great annual celebrations of the Apostles of Sla y s at Moravian Velehrad in the years that followed became the symbols of Slavic unity and the same principles govern our annual St. Cyril & Methodius Heritage Day, also known as the Slavic Heritage Festival celebration in Houston, Texas.

This festival is taking place at the University of St. Thomas on the second Sunday in July 1993.

There are more than half a million people of Czech descent in Texas and close to two million of them in the United States. According to a study of the Texas Education Agency in Austin, Texas in the early 70's, Czech is the third language in Texas, right after English and Spanish.

Let us be proud to be of the Czech or Moravian origin! Let us be proud to be Czech Texans! Let us be proud to be Americans of the Czech descent!

The following day, Sunday, July 11, the festival moves to the UST campus where a Parade of Nations and opening ceremonies will be held at noon. Special features this year will include a continuous video expo allowing festival-goers the opportunity to "visit" Eastern European countries and craft booths with artisans demonstrating handcrafts. Traditional Slavic singing, dancing and music will entertain visitors until 6 p.m.

The above event, also known at the St. Cyril and Methodius Heritage Day, was founded in 1963 by the late patriotic Czech American bishop, John L. Morkovsky.

Jezek-Kotrla Family Reunion The 27th Annual Jezek-Kotrla Reunion will he held on Sunday, July 18, 1993 at SPJST Lodge No. 47, Seaton.

Registration begins at 10 a.m.. A family style meal will be served at noon and a cake walk, prize drawing and auction will he held in the afternoon.

Those attending are asked to bring a covered dish meal for their family and guests. Bread, tea, coffee and tableware will he provided. We are also asking each family to bring a cake and a gift.

Proceeds raised from these items will go toward having future family reunions.

There will also he a fish pond for the children.

Family Reunion Descendants of Joseph Orsak and Razina (Krupala) Orsak will gather for their seventh reunion on Saturday, July 10, 1993 at the Portwood Pavilion in Seymour, Texas. Also invited are acquaintances and family friends.

Registration for the reunion will begin at 8 a.m. A catered meal will he served at noon. Price is $8 for adults and $3 for children under 10; children under age five are free. Families are asked to provide the desserts.

Family Reunion The 23rd Annual Hrabal Reunion will again be held at SPJST Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood on Saturday, July 10, 1993, located three miles east of West on FM 2114. The hall opens at 10:30 a.m.

Socializing is from 11 am. to 2 p.m.

Snacks and drinks are furnished and served all day. There will be games for the youngsters and a domino tournament for the older ones. A business meeting and election of officers is at 3 p.m., followed by a raffle and auction. Those who wish to donate a prize to the auction or raffle will be appreciated. Congratulations to Scott Hejny, son of Mr. and Mrs. William F. Hejny of Ennis, Texas, who was inducted into Tau Beta Pi this spring at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas.

Scott is currently enrolled as a junior aerospace engineering major at Texas A&M. Scott's grandparents are Stacie and the late Joe B. Hejny.

Tau Beta Pi is the National Engineering Honor Society and is the second oldest scholarship fraternity in the United States. The society was organized in 1885 at Lehigh University to recognize distinguished scholarship and exemplary character in engineering students.

Tau Beta Pi candidates of junior standing in their degree sequence must have at least a 3.5 cumulative grade point average and must be in the top 1/8 of their class.

Scott was the Scott Hejny valedictorian of the graduating class of 1990 at Ennis High School. He is also the recipient of an SPJST scholarship in the fall of 1990 and is very grateful for the honor and financial assistance.

The bride is the daughter of Charles (Chuck) and Jo Ann Hixson of Grandview, and the granddaughter of Dona Hubenak of Grandview and Mary H ixson of Crowley. The groom is the son of Dorothy Smith of Palestine, Texas.

Matron of honor was Kelly Vrana of Houston. Bridesmaids were Lisa rxson, sister-in-law of the bride of Fm Worth, Raya4ane Gustlin of Sant Clara, California and Debbie Manneck of Montgomery, Texas.

Best man was Stuart Whitaker c Palestine. Groomsmen were 'ck Shelton of San Antonio, George Mansur of Spring and Ray Arnold of Montgomery. The Reader was Ray Martinez of Houston. Ushers were Donald

Smith, brother of the groom of Rock Springs, Wyoming, Mark Hixson,

brother of the bride of Fort Worth and Damon Smith, nephew of the groom of Rockwall.

A reception, buffet dinner and dance was held at the National Hall, SPJST Lodge No. 92 where drapes of purple gossamer hung from the ceiling, anchored with clusters of pearl balloons.

The perimeter of the hall was defined by ivy covered white lattice screens and ficus trees with twinkling lights giving a gazebo effect. Ferns, early spring flower arrangements and English ivy provided additional accents.

The menu featured traditional Czech dishes and pastry as well as carved turkey and a selection of vegetables, fruits and cheeses. Fresh flowers adorned the four-tiered wedding cake of hazelnut with raspberry filling.

The Grand march, led by Roy and Lydia Alholm, was introduced with the Aggie Fight Song. Music for dancing was by Henry Czarnek and the Texas Dutchmen of Houston, Texas.

The bride is a graduate of Alvarado High School and received her BA degree from Texas A&M University.

The groom graduated from Palestine High School and attended Texas A&M. The groom owns and operates a chain of dry cleaning establishments in Texas and Louisiana. The bride most recently was an executive with the Boy Scout Council in Houston. The couple will reside in Montgomery, Texas.

The bride and her family, including her Grandmother Hubenak, are all members of Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth.

Mr. Charlie and Mrs. Clara, our honorary grandparents, had a hot dog supper for us. Mrs. Clara then led a ceremony to install our new officers. We finished up by roasting marshmallows.

Dear Readers, The Snook Youth Club participated in the Snook Fest '93 on June 5, 1993. We had a float in the parade called "Piggin' Out." It was a farm scene with pigs in a pen. Heather, Mia, Kimberly and I were dressed like pigs; Dwayne, John Michael, Travis, Nick, Jason, Jess and Courtney were dressed like farmers.

We won first place!

After the parade, we had a free ice water booth. The booth was a huge success, too.

Dear Readers, We had our meeting on June 20, 1993.

The meeting was called to order by President Jesika Tierce. The Pledge of Allegiance was said by Justin Engelke. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.

We had 15 members, seven adults and two guests present at the meeting.

The guests were Angie Norman and April Price.

Congratulations, everybody—we won first place in the Moody Parade. Gladys passed out tee-shirt participation forms to Amanda and Alicia Neslony, Justin Engelke, Michael, Brian and Nathan Tierce. Again, congratulations!

We discussed the District YAD which was June 27. The Youth donated juice, coffee and doughnuts.

We received a "thank you" note from Dawn Hill for donating coloring books and crayons for her Russia trip. Also, anyone selling calendars should sell them for $1.

In new business, we discussed Camp Val Verde which will be July 12-15. We decided to go to Astro World in Houston for our summer trip on September 11-12.

The youth donated $25 to the Libbie Parma Trust Fund for Father's Day. The youth also passed out beer tickets to the fathers for Father's Day. Gladys brought the Birthday Cake for June. Last month's door prizes were won by Alicia Neslony (first) and Jamie Trickett (second). This month's door prizes were won by: Candice McAdams (first) and Sandra Trickett (second). Our meeting ended at 3:10 p.m. Our next meeting will be July 18, 1993.
