Fred Kveton achieves "Grand Age of 96"
SPJST honors m omber of Lodge 154, Fort Worth On November 20, 1908, just two years after a devastating hurricane hit Galveston, a steam ship named the "Chemnitz" came chugging into Galveston Bay. On board were young Ferdinand (Fred) Kveton, age 11, and his sister, Anna, age 21. According to Volume Three of Czech Immigrant Passenger Lists by Leo Baca, Fred and Anna were among 606 other Czech and Slovak immigrants who entered the port of Galveston, Texas in 1908. In 1903, at the age of six, Fred and his two sisters, Anna and Mary, were orphaned. Fred went to live with an uncle near the German border. Daughters and their spouses are: Angelina Provine ( James Ray Provine, husband, deceased of Capitan, New Mexico) and Rose Krupala and husband, George, of Hamilton, Texas. Sons and their spouses are: George Kveton and wife, Lucille, of Lubbock; Henry Kveton, and wife, Dorothy, of Petersburg; and John Kveton, and wife Jean, of Abernathy. Daughter Mary Ann Jackson died on
November 8, 1992. Fred's wife, Mary, passed way on July 9, 1975. The Kveton family farmed at Electra, Texas, then moved to Abernathy in 1930 where they continued to farm until Brother Fred's retirement. After retirement, Brother Fred continued to grow beautiful flowers and a large garden and orchard. Brother Fred is a member of the American Legion and served as Post Commander in Abernathy. He also served as secretary of R.V.O.S. Lodge No. 37 and on the Board of Directors at the S.P.J.S.T. Nursing Home in Taylor, Texas. He now resides at the Hi-Plains Nursing Home in Hale Center, Texas. enjoys playing the game of Taroks. He says that he also likes to watch television, play dominoes and read the daily paper, the Vestnik, and other Czech publications to keep up on happenings. We would like to offer our congratulations to Brother Fred Kveton on achieving the Grand Age of 96, and outliving his SPJST insurance certificate. Brother Fred is entitled to all SPJST membership benefits with no further dues or assessments required. Our best wishes to Fred and his family for continued health and well-being. —SPJST-

Cory is a member of Lodge No. 24, Cyclone and a graduate of Georgetown High School. His parents are Greg and Betty Jean (Zabcik) Hall and his grandparents are Ben and Regina Zabcik and Chet and Shirley Hall. Cory will be attending the University of Texas at Austin this fall on a baseball scholarship.
Jay is a member of Lodge 24, Cyclone and a graduate of Granger High School. His parents are Frankie and Shirley Volek and his grandparents are Raymond and Levinia Pechal and Frank and Elizabeth Volek. Jay is planning to go to college where he will major in agricultural engineering.
Connie is a member of Lodge 88, Houston and a graduate of Klein Oak High School. Her parents are Laddie and Mary Ann Barcak and her grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Ladis Barcak and Agnes Judea. Connie will be attending Sam Houston State University this fall.
Cathy is a member of Lodge No. 88, Houston and a graduate of Texas A&M University in College Station. Her parents are John and Carol Globke and her grandparents are Leander and Josephine Pflughaupt. While at Texas A&M, Cathy majored in accounting.
