In Flanders Field by John McCrae

n Flanders field, the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; And in the sky the larks, Still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.

Memorial day will be on May 30; however most official observances will take place on Monday, May 31. The r ST Home Office will also in observance of the occasion. Every year, since it was first observed in 1868, Americans have set aside Memorial Day to pay homage and respect to our nation's fallen soldiers— those men and women who gave their last measure of devotion to preserve this free land of ours. Over the years, the original intent of the Memorial Day sometimes appears to have taken a backseat to commercialism in the form of Memorial Day sales and

advertising campaigns. As such, let us be ever mindful of the real reason the day was enacted—to pay tribute to those who have given their lives :hat \ ■ e may 1--.; free and enjoy the blessings of a land governed by and for the people. Their sacrifices serve as reminders to people of good will everywhere, to be ever on guard to protect the precious heritage that they helped preserve. Memorial Day is also a time for looking back; for seeing in our mind's eye the faces of friends and relatives who have departed from this worldly scene, remembering their smiles and their voices and their love and understanding for us.

We are the dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved, and were loved, And now we lie in Flanders field. Take up our quarrel with the foe; To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high, If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, Though the poppies grow In Flanders field. This verse was written in 1915 following the battle of Ypres, France. The author, John McCrae, a young Canadian doctor, eventually lost his own life in service in Flanders, an area of northern France, in 1918.
