SPJST announces April Top Producers The SPJST sales force wrote $2,761,870.00 of life business during the month of April, 1993. With the exception of approximately $200,000 of business, the remainder has already been issued by the Home Office. Of course, this indicates that our sales representatives are writing up quality applicants for SPJST insurance. Any life insurance organization's sales force able to submit applications at a 92 percent acceptance rate should feel proud of this achievement.

The SPJST is proud of the quality applicants it does receive from its sales force.

A special "tip of the hat" to Martha Broz, District Four, and Monta Foste-, District Seven. These two sales represen tatives not only accounted for the greatest amount of earned premium in their respective district, but also the most number of applications.

What You Give Is What You Get 'fry These Ideas on for Size A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned in this column that I had attended the National Fraternal Congress of America's (NFCA) spring communication workshop at Lake Tahoe. Something I didn't mention; however, was some of the suggestions we received for increasing member involvement in local lodge activities.

Some, I believe, are very good. Here is a summary of some of those ideas: • Initiate long-range program planning on the local level. Provide a loose structure of suggested program activities for different age groups and individuals.

• Appoint and train a lodge membership chairman. This person works closely with your sales representatives. He or she is responsible for contacting your new members and inviting them to participate in local lodge meetings and activities.

• Develop a new member or inactive member-welcoming strategy. Call members and personally invite them to your lodge functions. Then, if they don't attend, follow up with a phone call.

• If you are fortunate to have a lodge hall, display new members' photos in your entry. This adds a special touch and promotes recognition.

• Conduct a member interest survey of your lodge members, divided according to age group. Analyze the results and plan events accordingly. Questions could include: How were they recruited or how did they become members? What are their needs as individuals, or as a family?

Every one of these ideas, however, has a catch. They can't be accomplished in five minutes. But, then again, most longlasting courtships take time. By applying a little creativity, cooperation and good humor we can build a more active and dynamic lodge system. *** While We're On the Subject ...

All active lodge members need a little recognition every now and then for good work done. It doesn't mean that you have to present somebody with a bouquet of roses for turning out the lights; however, when a project is accomplished especially well or a person goes above and beyond the call of duty, then it follows, logically, that we should acknowledge that person for his or her contribution.

The need for regular communication and mutual support is essential; the human dignity of an individual must always be honored. It is difficult to overstate the importance of recognizing and showing appreciation to lodge volunteers for -their efforts. One of the strongest desires of an individual is to become a member of a group or "family." When we assure our lodge volunteers-through words and actions-the feeling of "being a part of the lodge," we help to satisfy that need. By building on each other's strengths, lodge work becomes a fun and productive activity.

Beware of Mortgage Scams If you have a home or real estate loan through the SPJST, you know to send your mortgage check to the Home Office in Temple for the duration of your loan.

Likewise, if you have any questions regarding payments, it's easy enough to pick up the phone and call the toll-free number for assistance.

On the other hand, if you deal with an outside mortgage company and get a letter advising you that your mortgage has been taken over by a new company, check it out before you send a check. "It may be a scam," according to a recent article in the

According to the story, several homeowners in Texas recently received a letter announcing that an organization calling itself Mortgage Bankers of America had "acquired ownership of your previous mortgage company."

The letter asked that future payments and other correspondence be sent to an address in Houston.

This kind of trickery reflects the huge volume of mortgage transfers in recent years as banks and thrifts have restructured operations, merged or been taken over by federal regulators.

If you receive a letter informing you that your mortgage has been sold or servicing transferred, before sending any money, the Journal advises: • You should get a letter from the original lender, addressed to you individually on company letterhead, stating that the mortgage has been sold or servicing transferred, to whom and the effective date; • A letter from the acquiring company, also on company letterhead, should follow within 15 days of the effective date, although sometimes both letters will arrive together.

• There should be a toll-free telephone number to call for verification • Be suspicious if you're asked to send a bank check or money order.

• If you have any doubts at all, call the original lender." *** Take A Few Minutes Grab a cup of coffee and a kolache, find an easy chair, and then take some time to read Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska's minutes of the March 11 and 12 Supreme Lodge Meeting that begin on page four of this week's Vestnik. It is as important to know what is going on at the Supreme Lodge meetings as it is in your local lodge meetings.

Rather than to emphasize any one section of this report, I encourage you to read every section carefully, and then, if you have any questions or comments, contact your district director or Supreme Lodge officers for clarifications.

Members of the Supreme Lodge met again in Temple on May 10 and 11. The minutes of that meeting will appear in approximately two months, following the July meeting of the Supreme Lodge.

The Minutes of the March 11-12, 1993 Regular Meeting of the Supreme Lodge SPJST held at the Home Office in Temple ,Texas The meeting was called to order by Chairman of the Board Cyrill (Sid) Pokladnik at 8:30 a.m. with the following Supreme Lodge Members present: Howard B. Leshikar, Pres.

incentive program. He reviewed the proposal for lodge incentives approved on February 25, 1993 in a meeting of the Supreme Lodge Officers and sent to the Directors for review. A copy of the proposal will be placed in the Exhibits.

The proposed incentive program was discussed extensively. During the deliberation it was pointed out the purpose of the program was to direct the focus of local lodges to writing members and insurance and providing a good program of fraternal and social activities. It was agreed that the program must be simple and easily understandable and good communication was going to be crucial to its success. It was explained that the President's Department would be maintaining a quarterly personal contact and quarterly reports with each lodge on progress and assistance with setting up the events and programs necessary to meet the incentive goal and win the cash and awards.

President Leshikar moved that the incentive program be adopted as presented. Vice President Gebala seconded and the motion carried unanimously.

RECOGNITION BANQUET - There was a general discussion about setting up a recognition banquet to present the lodge incentive awards.

Editor Brian Vanicek was present.

The following general guidelines were developed:

MINUTES - The minutes of the January 11-13, 1993 regular meeting of the Supreme Lodge were considered page by page. There was discussion about the recording of some sections after which the minutes were approved as presented on unanimously adopted motion by Director Broz, seconded by Director Bayer.

1. To be held the day of the workshop.

2. Additional cars paid from each lodge if the lodge is an award winner in the incentive program.

OFFICERS' REPORTS - Supreme Lodge officers' reports were acknowledged on motion by Director Bayer, seconded by Director Vavra and carried unanimously. (The reports will be placed of record in Exhibits Vol. 13.)

QUARTERLY LODGE MEETINGS - President Leshikar reported that Lodge No. 175, Rosenberg would like approval to continue their meetings on a quarterly basis.

He shared information that 43% of the lodges meet monthly, 32% meet quarterly, 3 meet six times annually, 16% are not meeting and 6% have not reported. During a discussion about inactive lodges, President Leshikar thanked the Directors who are assisting in' efforts to communicate with distressed lodges. He reported on works in the process to reactivate, merge, transfer or disband those lodges which cannot be reactivated. He reported information is being assembled for tracking purposes which will help us find out where the problems lie and what can be done about them. He asked for feedback on all aspects of our lodge system so that solutions can be found for the weaknesses of our program and stated that without examining both the positive and negative, we will not be able to judge where we have been or where we are going.

The motion to approve the general guidelines for the awards banquet was unanimously adopted. The motion was by President Leshikar and seconded by Vice President Gebala.

Permission was granted to Lodge No. 175 Rosenberg to meet quarterly. Unanimously adopted motion by President Leshikar, seconded by Director Vanek.

PERPETUAL ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIP - President Leshikar reported that a proposed perpetual endowment scholarship should be viewed now as an extension of the SPJST Scholarship Program and not a replacement of the scholarship program. He suggested that perhaps, down the road, the Perpetual Endowment Scholarship could replace our regular scholarship program.

4. Supreme Lodge Officers will plan the event.

MISSIONS AND GOALS - It was agreed that we would continue to pursue improving on our Mission and Goals and the entire Board involvement will continue to be utilized in arriving at decisions on improving our Society.

CZECH LANGUAGE ALLOCATIONS TO LODGES - President Leshikar expressed concern that the funds allocated may not be adequate due to initial response to the program. A number of lodges expressed interest in teaching Czech Language Course if the teacher support was available. It was pointed out that the total funding of $1,500 per year was set by the Convention. A consensus was reached that the program be monitored and that we work with the funds available.

STATE YOUTH DIRECTOR'S REPORT - SYD Joni Lange's report was reviewed, discussed and accepted.

STA1E FRATERNAL ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR'S REPORT - State FAC Frank Klinkovsky's report was discussed, reviewed, and accepted.

LIBRARY, ARCHIVES AND MUSEUM - President Leshikar reported on activity in the museum as follows:

The promotion for this endowment could be based on the same procedures as the 100 Pennies Drive. This would be an ongoing promotion. He stated that the SPJST would need to use all avenues to continuously promote the endowment.

January 1-29, 1993, there were sixty-three visitors from Texas, 28 visitors from out of state and one visitor from outside of the U.S.A.

President Leshikar proposed that enrollment (by means of donations) to the Endowment Scholarship would remain open and he suggested:

February 1-26, 1993, there were 157 visitors from Texas, 22 visitors from out of state and three visitors from outside of the U.S.A. The out of state visitors represented seventeen different states.

1. Minimum $10,000 to have donor's name or name made in memory of. The stated Reason being $10,000 at 5 percent interest would equal $500, the amount we now give for scholarships.

2. Minimum of $15,000 given by firm or corporation donation for donor's name or name made in memory of 3. Other Awards: Golden plaque award - $8,000 donor Silver plaque award - $6,000 donor Bronze plaque award - $4,000 donor It was stated that these plaques could be displayed in museum, or in lobby of Home Office.

INTERNAL CONTROLS - The Board reviewed a proposal to study and evaluate the system of internal controls. There was a discussion about fiduciary responsibility of Supreme Lodge Officers and Directors. The cost of the study and evaluation of internal controls was $8,500. It was explained that standard audits do involve some review of internal controls but the auditors reports customarily include a disclaimer concerning internal controls. Internal controls were said to include measures taken by management in arranging and structuring duties to assure that procedures are followed in carrying out the business of the Society. Opinion was expressed that the SPJST has good internal controls, and very trust worthy employees and a study would simply help us improve on our good system.

There was extensive discussion about the rules prohibiting certain relatives of officials of the Society from receiving scholarships. Opinion was also expressed that a donor of a special scholarship given or made in his name could not have the scholarship directed to or received by certain relatives.

On motion by President Leshikar, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas, it was agreed to have the firm of Brockway, Chupik, Gersbach, and Niemeier, P.C. to perform the study of internal controls. It was agreed to ask the firm to include guidelines for the handling of funds by local lodges. The motion carried unanimously.

It was agreed that the idea of a perpetual scholarship would be developed further for further consideration during the May Supreme Lodge meeting.

VESTNIK ADVERTISING - There was a review on established policy and guidelines for Vestnik advertising including an unwritten policy to limit advertising income to $1,000 excluding advertising paid by local lodges. The Board asked for input from Editor Vanicek and he indicated that the matter will be submitted to the Publication Committee for their consideration and recommendation.

On motion by President Leshikar, seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir, it was agreed that the donor of a perpetual scholarship could not control who received the scholarship.

Recess for lunch was taken at 12:10 p.m. until 1:15 p.m.

There was discussion if a donor could direct a scholarship to a specific kind of degree program.

LODGE INCENTIVES - President Leshikar brought up for discussion the lodge

INSURANCE PROGRAM REVIEW - Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska stated he had requested Al Purifoy to do a complete review of the various insurance coverages provided to the Society by our existing policies. The total program and various coverages

were reviewed and various Board members asked for additional information. The review also included discussion of areas not currently covered.

Supreme Lodge Officers and Director Pokladnik have authority to decide and act on offers.

There was a discussion about the fact that there is essentially no coverage available for voluntary workers. There was also discussion about the possibility of covering wrongful termination, sexual harassment and discrimination.

(b) REO #186 - Residence in Dallas County. Book value $35,761.08. Foreclosed 9-192. Property listed with J. Fite Realty for $21,500. Supreme Lodge Officers and Director Pokladnik have full authority to decide and act on offers.

LOCAL LODGE WORKSHOP - Vice President Gebala discussed the upcoming local lodge workshop. The number registered to attend is 237 from 49 lodges.

(c) REO #187 - Farm Baylor County, Texas. Book value $105,837.75. Price increased to $75,000 at January 1993 Supreme Lodge meeting.

QUICK START II - Vice President Gebala reported a good response to the Quick Start II sales training program and the cooperation and support from the directors was good. He stated he was confident the program will instill a continuous positive attitude among our sales force and it is hoped the success of the participants will be contagious.

The Supreme Lodge officers and Director Broz have full authority to decide and act on offers.

TRAINING OF NEW SALES REPRESENTATIVES - Vice President Gebala discussed the training of eight new sales representatives. He stated the daylong seminar was conducted by SFM Gene McBride and SFR Keith Gatewood. He stated that all of the attendees were enthusiastic with our product line, the support they were promised, and the instruction they had received.

INCENTIVE CHECKS FOR SALES REPRESENTATIVES - Vice President Gebala stated he will give each Director the incentive checks for the sales representatives in their districts for distribution at each spring district meeting.

PICNIC PACKS - Vice President Gebala reported that napkins with advertising are being printed at this time and the plasticware has been ordered. By eliminating the hand towelette in the new packs, the price will be about the same, which includes packaging the items. The Temple High School Special Education Unit has indicated an interest in assembling and packaging the units.

ANNUITY PLAN - Vice President Gebala reported the certificate forms for the Annuity II plan have been approved by the Texas Insurance Department.

There was a discussion about the possibility of allowing individuals age 70 or older to buy an annuity without having a SPJST life insurance certificate in force. The matter was postponed for further study.

The Board deliberated on guidelines for the new Annuity II certificate and how we would handle rollovers from the present Annuity. The discussion included potential interest rates for the present Annuity I certificate and the new Annuity II certificate.

Recess was taken from 3:20 p.m. until 3:35 p.m.

(d) REO #188 - Property in Wilson County, Texas. On motion by Financial Secretary Mikulas, seconded by Director Kohutek it was decided to authorize Director Bayer and the Supreme Lodge Officers to decide on the sales price.

REAL ESTATE LOANS/DELINQUENCIES - Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska reviewed a list of loans delinquent three or more months attached to his report. He explained that the delinquency figures are as of the end of month, February. Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska discussed changes in collection procedures and a reduction in the number of delinquent loans.

Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska reported a total of 31 loans delinquent. Of these loans, there are 15 loans on a workout; three loans in bankruptcy/foreclosure; two loans have an acceptable deferral; and the remainder of 11 delinquent loans will be worked aggressively. The delinquencies and actions were discussed. A motion was approved accepting the recommendations for action.

The motion was by Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska, seconded by Director Broz and it carried unanimously.

There was a discussion about our policy on how we handle the interest rate on loans in process when the interest rate is lowered or changed. It was explained that if the interest rate increases, there is a five-day waiting period before the increase is effective. If the rate decreases, the rate in force at time the application is received prevails.

LOSS RESERVE ON REAL ESTATE OWNED/REAL ESTATE LOANS Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska reported that delinquent loans and real estate properties owned were reviewed and recommended loss reserves were listed in the delinquency report recommending reserves for potential loan losses.

Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska stated he reviewed the delinquent loans and based on available information recommended the loss reserves for potential losses as listed in his report for five loans in the total of $34,000.

There was further discussion and the following decisions were reached: 1. The new Annuity II plan was approved for marketing effective April 1, 1993.

Factors used in determining loss reserves are the director's current report on property and/or the tax market value and other available data.

2. The rate on the Annuity II certificate was set at 5.80 percent, effective April 1, 1993 through May 31, 1993.

The recommended loss reserve for Real Estate Owned is as follows:

3. Agreement was reached that it is anticipated that the old Annuity I certificate interest rate would be dropped substantially at a later date and would be set lower than the new Annuity II certificate.

4. The old Annuity I interest rate will be left unchanged at 6.25 percent, effective April 1, 1993 through May 31, 1993.

5. Once the Annuity II certificate is being marketed, the old Annuity I plan will not be sold to new annuitants but existing holders of Annuity I certificates can add to their certificates.

6. The agent of record will be automatically transferred on rollovers from Annuity Ito Annuity II and a convenient form will be prepared for rollovers.

7. The premium limit in both certificates, Annuity I and II combined was set at $100,000 per individual excluding interest credited and premiums paid in prior to this limitation effective date.

8. Commission will be paid only on additional amounts paid into an annuity when there is a net increase in a members total amount of annuities. There will be no commission paid on amounts transferred or rolled over from Annuity I to Annuity II plans.

The motion approving the eight rules and guidelines was by Director Vanek, seconded by Director Hanus. Motion carried unanimously.

MINUTES OF OFFICERS' MEETINGS - The minutes of the Supreme Lodge Officers' meetings held during January and February 1993 were considered and approved on motion by Director Vavra, seconded by Director Kohutek. Motion carried unanimously.

FORECLOSED PROPERTY - Secretary Treasurer Mikeska reported on the following foreclosed properties: (a) REO #182 & #183 - Commercial property located in Tarrant County. Book Value is $92,852.49. CUSTODY AGREEMENT - Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska reported that the custody agreement with Texas Commerce Bank National association is in process but has not been completed. He discussed an on line computer access to the custody account. Securities will be handled Delivery Vs Payment (DVP). Funds will flow from the custody account to the TCB demand deposit account and securities purchased will be paid for out of our TCB demand deposit account. Excess funds in the TCB DDA account will be invested in designated money market or money fund accounts. Security of the custody account will be reviewed and authorized by the Supreme Lodge officers.

Authorization was granted to sign the custody agreement, open an DDA account with TCB National Association by executing necessary Resolution. The motion was by Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas and carried unanimously.

Recess was taken from 9:45 a.m. until 10 a.m.

VESTNIK - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported the total Vestnik subscribers now stand at 9,428 as of February 28, 1993. The total cost per week for postage now amounts to $1,240. Cost of printing the Vestnik amounts to approximately $990. per week. Financial Secretary Mikulas stated that the printing cost has decreased by approximately $230 per week and attributed savings to the new contract with Hill County Press. The SPJST editor now provides camera-ready material to the printer. If the same number of copies continue to be printed, SPJST should save approximately $11,000. in printing cost per year.

Financial Secretary Mikulas reported that the cost of postage is determined by the amount of advertising in each issue. It was agreed that there was a need to determine the additional postage charge due to the advertising space and its impact on revenue from advertising.

It was agreed that Financial Secretary Mikulas check on cost of adding color to the Vestnik.

INDEPENDENT AUDIT - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported that the independent audit being conducted by the firm of Brockway, Chupik, Gersback and Niemeier, RC., began on January 4, 1993 and the firm will finish audit procedures by May 31, 1993. The final report should be delivered no later than June 10, 1993.

Financial Secretary Mikulas pledged full cooperation will be given to the audit firm so that all audit procedures will be completed as scheduled above. Final audit report will be filed with the Texas Department of Insurance by June 30, 1993.

The financial internal controls audit will be performed at the same time as the regular audit.

One Board member asked when we would consider management internal controls.

Discussion involved the amount of purchase limitations, time clock, personnel matters, and office management policy.

A Board member questioned the necessity of having outside audits. It was explained that the State Insurance Rules require an outside audit and bids were accepted for the outside audit for the next three years. The cost and ability to purchase Directors and Officers liability insurance is also positively impacted by having outside audits.

Because each individual Board member shares equal fiduciary responsibility, it was agreed that policy should be placed on the agenda of the May meeting for a least one hour to work on improving overall management, personnel utilization, time clock, auto use, equipment purchase and utilization purchase limit of supplies/equipment by any one officer, coordinator and coordination of matters to the best interest of the Society. The motion was by Director Vavra, seconded by Director Broz and carried unanimously.

TEXAS INSURANCE DEPARTMENT - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported the previously scheduled state audit was postponed by the Texas Insurance Department and is anticipated to begin at an early date.

DIRECT BILL - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported the Society has converted 99 lodges to direct bill consisting of 47,884 certificates. This completed 83 percent of our lodges and 93 percent of our certificate membership. He reported he placed SPJST Lodge 57, Gonzales on direct bill during this reporting period.

He discussed the Convention action providing that all lodges be placed on direct bill with the Home Office collecting all premiums.

PENDING LOANS - Legal Advisor Kacir reviewed status of legal work on 29 loans in process.

He discussed that for the third time, legislation is in process to change the Texas Homestead Laws.

One Board member asked for explanation why a new survey and certified plat was required for SPJST loans being refinanced. It was explained that where there were no improvement changes, title companies are willing to go back over seven years without a survey update if the borrowers sign an affidavit concerning location of improvements.

LITIGATION/TAX SUITS - Legal Advisor Kacir discussed tax suits and threatened tax suits.

OTHER MAI'l LRS Legal Advisor Kacir discussed our policy on Power of Attorney specifically relating to a loan matter when a spouse wanted to sign an affidavit using the Power of Attorney. The reason in this case was to only save mailing time which was not judged as a valid reason.

Legal Advisor Kacir discussed SPJST policy that when we refinance a loan from another lender, because of Texas Homestead Laws, we need an assignment of the lien we are refinancing instead of a release.

DIRECTORS' OLD BUSINESS Director Vavra - He discussed his lodge contacts and business he handled during January and February.

Director Kohutek - He asked for clarification about how the $750 payment to a lodge is handled for the District Fraternal Fest. The policy was reviewed and provides that up to $750 is allocated and if not used during the year, will not be accumulated. If the total cost is less than $750, the lesser amount will be paid.

Director Kohutek stated that it is his opinion that the delegates increased our frequency of meetings to every two months to have better communication and understanding.

Director Broz - He discussed his work in the district and handling of problems and commented on his opinion of what is expected of directors. He thanked the Officers for sending their reports early and stated he thought we were on the right track.

Director Hanus - He commented on receiving the reports promptly allowing him to study them which simplified his preparation for the meeting. He discussed his work in the district.

Director Vanek - He asked for clarification of laws applying to use of raffle tickets to raise funds for lodge purchases. It was understood that use of mails and public advertising and communication media that is considered interstate commerce is clearly not in order. He discussed fraternal activities in District VI and the Quick Start sales training classes which he thought were good.

Director Bayer - He stated he was questioned if the museum could be opened during the SYAD weekend. He asked for a review of reporting forms mailed to local lodges and if any of the reports could be combined and reported at the same time. Discussion revealed that there are certain time requirements affecting a number of the reports.

Director Pokladnik - He reported that District III was working on a Fall Fraternal Fest for District III and consideration was being given to combining it with the fall district meeting because of a crowded calendar of activities for the district.

Recess for lunch was taken at 12:10 p.m. until 1:30 p.m.

SCHOLARSHIP POLICIES - President Leshikar reported the scholarship program should be a vehicle to promote loyalty to the Society. He expressed opinion that individuals who win scholarships are very grateful for the financial help that they receive He suggested that we develop a software program that will tag the scholarship recipients in our membership files for five to seven years from the date that they win a scholarship. These recipients could then be contacted by a local sales representative to update their insurance policies. He stated that within a five to seven year range that the recipient should be receiving a good income and be able to afford to update and change their SPJST policies. It is also possible that they will be starting their families at this time and SPJST would like to be there to see that their families will be covered

by SPJST insurance products.

The procedure was approved on unanimously adopted motion by President Leshikar, seconded by Director Bayer.

NFCA TREASURY DEPARTMENT REPORT - President Leshikar stated that each Supreme Lodge member had been mailed a copy of the NFCA Treasury Report. He stated that the Board needs to examine this report carefully as there is a lot of good news and at the same time, some bad news involved. The Supreme Lodge Board must continually examine its efforts to make sure that we are staying within the guidelines that govern a fraternal benefit society.

Legal Advisor Kacir gave a brief overview of the report and stated he would report further on any significant items.

VIDEO - President Leshikar discussed suggestions that the Supreme Lodge purchase a video recorder, so that important events be recorded and filed in the museum. He also stated he believed that some short training videos could be made for workshops or other society use.

It was decided to authorize up to $1,200 to purchase a professional quality VCR for Supreme Lodge use. The motion was by Vice President Gebala, seconded by President Leshikar and it carried unanimously.

AGE 96 UPDATE - President Leshikar reported on status of the age 96 recognition program.

SCHOLARSHIPS - President Leshikar stated that the information about the 1993 scholarship winners will be mailed to the directors around the first week of April.

Then the Freshmen scholarship presentations by lodge representatives will begin.

NFCA HABITAT FOR HUMANITY - President Leshikar reported on the adoption of the Habitat for Humanity project by the Texas Fraternal Congress. He asked for feedback on SPJST involvement. After discussion, a motion was adopted to authorize SPJST involvement and participation in the Habitat for Humanity project.

The motion was by President Leshikar, seconded by Vice President Gebala. The motion included authority to make a $1,000 contribution to Habitat for Humanity and to authorize up to ten motel rooms and meals for up to twenty people from SPJST working on the project. Motion carried unanimously.

AGENDA - President Leshikar suggested that the directors inform him prior to the set deadline of any items they want to add to the meeting agenda.

NEW MEMBER WELCOMING COMMII ILE - President Leshikar reported that his department is working on guidelines for New Member Welcoming Committees to be sent to the Lodges. He asked the Board for their support in this effort.

President Leshikar indicated a need to be informed of new members and terminations in the youth club eligibility age range.

Board members indicated a need to be provided with a list of youth club members.

Financial Secretary Mikulas stated the youth club members could be coded in the individual certificate/membership files and his department would provide file maintenance support. On motion by Director Hanus, seconded by Director Kohutek it was agreed to authorize the project to be worked out by the Youth Department and the Financial Secretary's Department. The motion included provision to provide the

Youth Department with names of new members and terminations. Motion carried unanimously.

MID-YEAR FIC/FFMA MEETING - Vice President Gebala reported that normally, Texas FIC procedure is to have their president attend the Mid-year FIC/FFMA Meeting. The Texas FIC Association contributes $300, and the Society sponsoring the president pays the remainder of the expense. Kathy Fritz is the Texas FIC President and will be unable to attend this meeting due to her college class schedule; so consequently he would not be asking the Society to defray expenses for her to attend this meeting.

SUPREME LODGE MEETING - The next regular meeting of the Supreme Lodge is scheduled for May 10-11, 1993 to begin at 8:30 a.m.

SOCIETY AUTOMOBILES - Vice President Gebala reported on the high mileage on two of the SPJST automobiles used by field employees. It was agreed that Vice President Gebala should obtain price information on automobiles for consideration during the May Supreme Lodge meeting.

There was a review of previous consideration of the By-Law Committee guidelines pertaining to SPJST automobiles.

INVESTMENTS - Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska requested consideration and ratification of investments for the period beginning January 1, 1993 through February 28, 1993, including real estate loans closed. The investments and mortgage loans were ratified on unanimously adopted motion by Director Bayer, seconded by Director Broz.

INVESTMENT POLICY - Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska took up a review of the Society Investment Policy last amended during the January, 1993 meeting.

The policy was reviewed and Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska recommended the following changes: 1. To eliminate the entire "SAVINGS AND LOAN" section, since we do not deposit funds in any savings and loan.

2. Add to the "OTHER ACCOUNTS" section, "Investment in money fund accounts that serve as sweep accounts for the Texas Commerce Bank National Association Bank account and Custody Account are limited to $1,000,000 excluding funds temporarily invested which were proceeds from recent sales and funds for purchase of securities that are only temporarily invested." The recommendation was approved on motion by Financial Secretary Mikulas, seconded by Director Hanus. Motion carried unanimously.

Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska reported on the cash flow testing project the Board requested to be done with the assistance of Actuary John Agee. The testing was done based on a common standard in the industry as recommended by New York Regulation 126 set of seven scenarios plus one additional scenario. Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska stated that he and President Leshikar reviewed the work in Dallas on Monday, March 8, with John Agee and his associate, Larry Tunnel. The formulas and results of eight different interest scenarios were reviewed and it was explained that the tests involve numerous factors and assumptions. Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska stated that we now have the data base that can be updated and will enable us to run different models to test impact of different factors and conditions dealing with interest rates, mortality, lapses and expenses. It was reported that the initial results are encouraging but more work and study needs to be done to see if any areas need to be addressed and that this will be an ongoing project.

It was agreed on motion by Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska, seconded by President Leshikar that time be taken during the May Supreme Lodge meeting to look at this testing results and discuss the cash flow testing.

Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska discussed the 8.48 percent net earned on assets during 1992.

UNIVERSAL LIFE RAIL - Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska reported that the gross yield on $7,300,527.08 of assets allocated to Universal Life is 8.4432 percent. The spread is 1.4432 percent. The assets allocated are bonds and mortgages on a 2 to 1 ratio. The average yield on bonds allocated is 7.9659 percent and on mortgages since 1986 is 9.3978 percent.

After discussion, it was decided to leave the Universal Life rate at 7 percent for the period from March 31, 1993 through May 31, 1993.

The motion was by Vice President Gebala, seconded by Director Bayer and it carried unanimously.

UNPAID CLAIMS - Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska asked if the Board desired to decide a charitable use for two unpaid claims as provided by Article 92 (f) of our ByLaws. It was decided to designate and pay the following two unpaid claims to the Scholarship Fund: 1. Unpaid claim in the amount of $93.00.

2 . Unpaid Claim in the amount of $1, 976 .40. A period of sixty days additional time would allowed for this unpaid claim to further attempt to locate a claimant.

The motion approving was by Vice President Gebala, seconded by Director Broz and it carried unanimously.

LODGE COMPLIANCE - Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska reviewed a list of lodges that had not returned the completed lodge officers and annual information update. He asked guidance from the Board in getting compliance.

ANNUAL STATEMENT - 1992 - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported that the annual statement was filed with the Texas Insurance Department on February 26, 1993. He briefly reviewed the following items of interest from the annual statement: $11,474,649.00 Increase in insurance $1,449,896.92 Net gain from operations Ratio of net investment income 8.48% Gain in assets $12,799,188.93 Gain in Liabilities $11,405,858.35 He commented favorably about the results. Certain segments of the annual statement were briefly reviewed.

DELINQUENT LODGES - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported that the following lodges were delinquent with premiums as of 2-28-93: Lodge 9 — $688.20 January premiums Lodge 41 — 47.86 January premiums Lodge 151 — 429.79 January premiums Lodge 162 — 81.73 December & January premiums.

RETIRED PARTICIPANTS RECEIVING MONTHLY BENEFITS - Financial Secretary Mikulas reviewed a list of SPJST retirees currently receiving monthly benefits. He also showed the percentage increase authorized from 1-1-83 through 1-1-92.

Questions were asked if it is clearly understood that if an employee is fully eligible to draw a full benefit but dies after becoming eligible but before a selection is made, that such spouse should be entitled to make a selection of the full benefit. The matter was discussed and it was concluded that an employee's spouse would be entitled to the full benefit without reduction if such employee was eligible to draw a full benefit but had not made a selection prior to death.

REFUND TO LODGES FOR 1993 TO BE PAID IN 1994 - Financial Secretary Mikulas reviewed the fact that a number of incentive items are being recommended for refund to lodges and we should agree on these before determining the method of refund. He recommended that the refund to lodges be made by number of paid up certificates and premium paying certificates. At the present time we have 51,759 certificates. Of these, sixty percent are paid up (30,763) and forty percent are premium paying (20,996). This includes all annuity certificates which total 2,201. If we allocate $1.00 per paid up certificate and $6.00 per premium paying certificate, this would result in a total refund of about $156,739. Financial Secretary Mikulas stated we should keep in mind that the other incentive items should also be considered as a refund to lodges which could amount to an additional thirty to forty thousand dollars.

After discussion, it was agreed to further review this matter in the May meeting with a decision to be made no later than the July Supreme Lodge meeting.

NEW ISSUES/TERMINATIONS - Financial Secretary Mikulas reviewed a report of new issues and terminations of certificates for January and February 1993.

INCOME/EXPENSE FOR JANUARY AND FEBRUARY, 1993 - Financial Secretary Mikulas reviewed and referred to a statement showing receipts of $3,242,135.96 for January and February 1993 and disbursements of $1,430,524.61.

LEGISLATION - Legal Advisor Kacir gave a legislative report.

MISCELLANEOUS - Legal Advisor Kacir was allowed to bring up an Old Business matter item. He referred to the July 1988 Supreme Lodge Minutes when he reported that he was putting on a full time staff SPJST employee. He stated his opinion in response to comments and action that the Legal Advisor should supplement the salary of the Legal Advisor's secretary and stated his opinion that the full salary of the legal secretary should be fully paid by the SPJST. He stated that it needs to be resolved if the Legal Advisor's secretary is a full time employee and he stated that it is not possible to get the type of employee needed for the salary authorized by the SPJST without a supplement from him. He stated his opinion that he should not be required to supplement the employee's salary. He indicated he thought it was clear with the delegates that the Legal Advisor's secretary was a full time SPJST employee and if necessary would submit it to the delegates by referendum if a referendum is done for some other purpose.

Concern was expressed by one Board member that the employee is not physically located in the Home Office Building. The legal advisor's response was that he had informed the Finance Committee about the matter.

It was agreed by common consent that since it is our policy not to adjust salaries other than when all adjustments are considered, at the beginning of next year, that the legal secretary's salary not be adjusted at this time.

DIRECTORS' NEW BUSINESS Director Vavra - He expressed appreciation in behalf of Sister Vavra for the flowers and cards sent to her while she was ill.

He commented favorable on the sales seminars in District I and said he appreciated receiving the reports in time to study them He suggested that three directors be placed on audit of vouchers during the July directors' audit instead of two as was previously done.

Director Vavra extended an invitation to the District I meeting.

He discussed the need to get started with work on the dormant lodges.

Director Kohutek - He suggested that if any automobiles are replaced, he recommended larger autos rather than mid size.

He commented on the good cooperation at this meeting and a feeling of team work.

He extended an invitation to the District II meeting.

Director Broz - He said he was confident we had a good team in the SPJST Supreme Lodge. He suggested that we consider reinstating the $25,000 life insurance requirement to qualify for a SPJST mortgage. He also suggested that we look at some way to accommodate small mortgage loans for small amount of improvements. He invited all to the District IV meeting.

Director Hanus - He commented favorably on the Officers' reports and stated he really appreciates them.

Director Vanek - He discussed dormant lodges and said it was important that we come up with some solutions. He suggested we explore the use of advertising in some areas where we have good potential.

He said he was happy about the lodge incentive program that was approved.

Director Bayer - He stated he thought this was a fruitful meeting and the reports were informative.

He asked where he could obtain one of the blazers with the SPJST emblem worn by other Supreme Lodge members. During the discussion it was concluded that the navy blue blazers used by Supreme Lodge members for official functions were showing quite a bit of wear and purchase of new blazers with an SPJST emblem were authorized on motion by President Leshikar, seconded by Director Vavra. Carried unanimously.

He thanked President Leshikar for letters mailed to inactive lodges in District VII and reported on his efforts. He stated a Fraternal Fest was being planned.

Letters from the Lodges Lodge No. 1, Fayetteville and Heritage Society to Host Picnic SPJST Lodge No. 1 and the Fayette County Czech Heritage Society will have a joint picnic on Sunday, June 6, 1993 at Polansky's Lake at Rek Hill to begin at 11 a.m.

The lodge will honor those attaining 50-year membership with the SPJST in 1993. These include Sydonia Rosali Benton and Jerry John Slavik. We are extending invitations to the family and friends of these honorees to join us in recognition of their longstanding membership.

Members are asked to bring a covered dish and a salad or dessert.

Everyone is welcome to fish, play games or just visit if you like. The Fayette Czech Singers plan to entertain you.

6, Cottonwood Reports on May Lodge Meeting

Lodge Director Pokladnik - He extended an invitation to the District III meeting.

He stated opinion that in the future, when replaced, the Society autos should be replaced with larger automobiles for the safety of our employees.

He was happy that we had a good meeting. He discussed the need for us to express ourselves and abide by the things that are favorable and in the best interest of our Society.

He asked that Board members abide by rules of conducting a meeting and respect the rules of obtaining recognition before speaking and that our dealings be conducted in a business like manner.

The next meeting will begin at 8:30 a.m. May 10, 1993.

There being no further business, Chairman of the Board Pokladnik adjourned the meeting at 5:50 p.m.

Our monthly meeting was held on May 2, 1993. The meeting was called to order by President Johnny Krizan, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led

Our secretary was not present, so the minutes of our last meeting were not read.

We had 14 members present and had one member, Ruth Krizan, who observed a birthday in May. The $5 door prize was won by Cyril Surcek and the progressive door prize by Randy Greener, who was not present.

Our next meeting will be on Friday, June 4, because of a rental on Sunday.

13, Dime Box Reports on April Meeting

The regular monthly meeting was called to order on Sunday, April 24, at 2 p.m. by President Ricky Ford. There were 11 officers present an three absent.

We began with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence honoring our departed member, Joe Provazek of Deanville.

The minutes of the last meeting were read by Sister Dorothy Rachel and the treasurer's report was given by Sister Debbie Kostelka. Both were approved as read.

Before our meeting today, everyone enjoyed a meal of chicken enchiladas and all the fixings. Thanks to all who donated time and food to this delicious feast!

We were glad to see Mrs. Albina Milburn at this meeting. She was unable to attend our meetings for a little while due

to an illness. Welcome back, Mrs. Milburn!

The Dime Box Homecoming Committee donated $500 toward improvements to the SPJST grounds, with the possibility of putting the funds toward the construction of a stage outside.

We would like to congratulate our Secretary Dorothy Rachel for being elected to the position of Parliamentarian of District One, SPJST. We know that she will do a great job!

Our last polka dance turned out so well that we have decided to have more in the future. On Sunday, May 23, from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m., the Jody Mikula Orchestra will be coming to Dime Box to entertain all of us who love to polka and waltz. On Sunday, June 27, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m., Lee Roy Matocha will be back in Dime Box with their great music that we all look forward to hearing. We really would like to see a big crowd come out and hear these bands, so bring your partner and come and dance.

24, Cyclone Reports on May Meeting

Dear Readers, Members of Lodge No. 24, Cyclone met on. May 10 for their regular monthly meeting. President Carol Chervenka presided. All officers and trustees, with the exception of Johnny Chervenka, were in attendance.

Following the Pledge of Allegiance a moment of silence was observed in memory of those members who have passed away. Condolences were extended to the family and friends of Brother Joe Macek who had passed away since our last meeting. Get well wishes were also expressed to the following lodge members: Ben Zabcik, John Paul Chervenka, Kenneth Marek and Wilbur and Kathy Morrow. Kenneth Marek and the Morrow's were all recuperating following recent automobile accidents.

Following the reading of the minutes, chairmen of the standing committees delivered their reports. In her report, Youth Leader Shirley Ashcraft announced that membership in the Lodge 24 Youth Club had increased to 21 members. In a related report, Barbara Macek announced that the lodge had donated a basketball game set to the Youth Club members After the bar, kitchen, hall reports were delivered, members discussed the recent Polka Festival at Lodge 24 and the Mother's Day Barbecue. (Mother's Days photos will be appearing in an upcoming issue.) Thanks to the outstanding support of lodge members, the community and visitors from our sister lodges, both events were very successful.

Winners of the prize drawing held in conjunction with the Mother's Day Dinner were: First Prize—Stephanie Vanicek; Second Prize—Robert Macek; Third Prize—Jackie Beck and Fourth Prize—Mildred Geistman.

President Chervenka gratefully acknowledged the support of all Lodge 24 adult and youth volunteers who contributed both time and baked goods to both events. Likewise, chairs of the various committees were recognized for their efforts. President Chervenka stated that she would be, at a later date, submitting a letter to the Vestnik thanking all

those individuals who helped with the festivities. Likewise, she will call attention to those members who volunteered and made physical improvements to the lodge in preparation for the two events.

In new business, President Chervenka announced the Fraternal Services Workshop that will be held on Tuesday night, May 25 at the SPJST Home Office in Temple. Several members expressed an interest and said they would be attending.

The new Lodge Incentive and Recognition Program was also discussed. • New members announced at the May meeting included: Jordan Sebek, Carla Valenta, Krista Bradley and Cody Snow.

One transfer to Lodge No. 24, Thomas Valenta, was also announced. Members voted unanimously to accept all of these new members. Welcome to you all.

May birthday celebrants included Matthew Jahns, Jimmy Baker, Wilbert Mikeska, Louise Zavodny, Bernice Sebek and Carol Chervenka.

The 'next lodge meeting will be June 14 at 7 p.m. Please make plans to attend.

25, Ennis Says Thanks to Polka Festival Participants

Do your feet hurt? If they don't you weren't at Lodge 25 celebrating the polka festival. Everyone had a wonderful time.

The costumes were absolutely beautiful and the people were all in a good mood.

Spring and good music does that to people. We made some new friends this year—many of them members of the Polka Lovers Klub of America. We certainly enjoyed having you and congratulate you for winning the Non-Commercial Award with your float entry. Lodge No. 25 won the Judge's Award, thanks to a lot of hard work by Linda and Victor Trojacek and their children, Sandra, Randy, Alicia and Kenneth Honza, Jessica, Steven and Renee and Pat Fowler and her children Julie and Michael, and Douglas Martinek as well.

Materials were donated by Margaret Krajca, Mildred Trojacek, the Fowlers and Ernest Haskovec. Thanks to Milton Martinek for letting the float stay nice and dry in his barn during the annual Polka Festival downpour and to Ron Mraz for pulling the trailer.

Needless to say, we can't thank everyone that worked during the festival, but Kenneth Honza wants to thank his bar crew, Alicia Honza had really great people working at the front door and Linda Trojacek really appreciates all her kitchen help.

As usual, we had many compliments on the wonderful food at the SPJST hall.

The hall also looked nice with the added decorations.

We all had a great time and hope that all of our guests did, too.

47, Seaton Gears Up for Annual Picnic Lodge

Dear Members: With 69 members attending, President Wallace Jez convened the May meeting followed by a moment of silent prayer in remembrance of deceased member and friend, Sister Toni Orsag.

Joining as visitors were Ann Balusek, Elvern Frenzel, Gertrude Kahlig, Josef Morris and Freddie Schroeder.

Reported on the sick list and wished 100 percent good health were Jerry Bravenec, James Hanusch, Anton Motl, Stacey Martinet and Matilda Sefcik.

Secretary Dolores Skrabanek read the roll call and minutes of the previous meeting.

Accepted and welcomed as new members were Barbara Johnson, Trudy Mekush, Josef W. Morris (Junior), Jared Thomas and Katie Thomas. These members are extended a special invitation to become an active part in all of Star Hall's activities.

First Vice President Edwin Pechal stated in his report: • Need volunteer judges for the cook-off • $3 will get members an official name tag, which can be worn at all of Star Hall's activities. FAC Dorothy Pechal relayed the following information: • November 20 is the date of the State SPJST Volleyball Tournament which will be held at Temple's City Recreation facility. Players and members must be 15 years of age on the day of the tournament.

• Any ideas for the District Two Czech Fest? Contact any local or District Two officer.

• Through generous donations, 84 SPJST scholarships will be awarded.

• The District Two fall meeting will be September 19 in Taylor.

• The May 21 Family/Social Night will include a Progressive "42" tournament.

Last minute picnic information was given and is as follows: SELL, SELL, SELL those prize-draw-

ing tickets. The prizes are: First Placequeen-size,hand-stitched quilt; Second Place—Beef; Third Place-13" color television; Fourth Place—Gas Grill; Fifth Place—Boy's or Girl's Bicycle; Contact Ann and Gene Hejl.

• Auction Chairman Frank Klinkovsky and Co-chairpersons Leroy and Ruth Hanusch are accepting auction items.

This event is always a success because of the support from many local business and the generous donations from you, the members.

• Visitors and members will again find Martha Klusacek and friends selling a variety of wonderful treats in the Sweet Booth. Kolaches, cupcakes (for the children), pies, cakes, and homemade canned items are needed to make the booth a success.

• A picnic set-up and work day is scheduled for Saturday, June 5 at 8 a.m. As in the past, there will be those wonderful cooks, who will begin food preparation very early that Saturday morning. Of course, ANYONE may volunteer at ANY TIME during that busy Saturday or the even busier picnic Saturday.

54, West Reports on Quarterly Meeting Lodge

President John Emery called the first quarterly meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. on March 5. After he greeted all of the members, the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag was recited, led by Westley Zahirniak.

A roll call of officers indicated all to be present.

Secretary Anne Emery read the minutes of the November 20 meeting.

These were approved as read. items of correspondence were also read.

Financial Secretary Maxine Sefcik gave her report which was also approved as read.

We are very pleased to welcome the following new members: Chance Vrba is a new adult member and the following are new youth members: Brice Wood Bashear, Bradley A. Uptmore, Garrett W. Uptmore, and Kristin Uptmore. All of these members were secured by Sales Representative Freddie Kaluza. The insurance certificate for Steve Pustejovsky was outlived as of December 31, 1992. Sister Julia Holacka and Sister Teresa Marek, both residents of West Rest Haven, will receive their 75-year membership pins this year. They will be honored at our Christmas party. Sister Georgia Lyons will receive a 5-year membership pin and will be honored at our June meeting.

Treasurer Freddie Kaluza gave his report, which was approved as read. We are happy to announce that Sales Representative Kaluza was recognized by the Supreme Lodge as having signed up the most applications in District Three dur

ing January 1993. We thank Freddie for his hard work.

Our next meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday night, June 4 at Lone Star Hall. We encourage our members to come out and help us honor Sister Georgia Lyons.

84, Dallas Members Please Take Notice Lodge

The June meeting of Lodge 84 has been changed to Sunday, June 6 at 3 p.m.

The meeting will be very short so we can enjoy games and refreshments compliments of the lodge. Please call one of the officers and tell them you'll be present.

We have had a very busy spring with events well-attended. My sincere thanks to everyone who worked and contributed to the bake sale—rentals—District Meeting and garage sale. With teamwork like this, I'm confident that we will attain our goal for this year.

If you haven't attended a dance lately, you have missed an added feature. In addition to the free dance tickets, a special door prize, donated by various members, is given away to some lucky person.

Oh! By the way, if you have relatives, friends or neighbors who would like to enjoy the privileges of the lodge, contact one of the lodge sales representatives and they will be happy to set up an appointment to explain the great things that we have to offer.

88, Houston Hosting AARP Driving Class July 15-16

The next class is more than half filled, so don't hesitate to register if your threeyear period has run out.

To register, call Homer Alexander, your Fraternal Activities Coordinator, at 681-3304.

This program is for persons 50 years of age and older and can be used to reduce your automobile insurance premiums.

Class time is 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on both days. The fee is $8 per student.

This course is for auto premium reduction only and does not relieve you of a traffic violation or traffic fine.

There is no written or oral examination and the course consists of a slide presentation and oral instruction by Mr. Joe Rosel, the AARP instructor.

The fee is payable to AARP prior to the start of the first class on the morning of July 15th.

Homer Alexander will be in the lobby of the lodge to collect the fee.

10/VESTNIfIE—Wednesday, May 19, 1993

Lodge 92, Fort Worth Honors Sister Vlasta Dolkos Dear Members and Friends, May 6th was a nice day at the Jackson Square Nursing Home as it provided us with the opportunity to honor Sister Vlasta Dolkos. Sister Dolkos is one of our longtime members who has achieved the age of 96 and outlived her SPJST life insurance policy.

Sister Dolkos is in bed most of the time but that did not keep her from smiling, happy to see the several members and friends that turned out for the occasion. Her son, Rudy Dolkos, was present, as was his wife, Sylvia, daughter of Louis Akard and her husband, who live in Hico, Texas. Also in attendance were her sister Mary Keeney, Christine, Shirley and Carl W. Zich and Evelyn Spacek. Other visitors in attendance included Mrs. Victoria Mozjesik, a Czech lady from Ohio who also lives at the nursing home. She was accompanied by her daughter, Betty Ann Monroe from Arlington, Texas; and Mrs. Mozjesik's sister, Agnes Mica, from Connecticut.

They all enjoyed being present when the certificate and check were presented to Vlasta Dolkos by Lodge 92 President Carl W. Zich.

Later, the three Czech ladies with our

members started to sing Czech songs. It made for a very enjoyable time.

It was a wonderful honor for me to make the presentation to Sister Dolkos as I have known her for many years. I can remember being about eight or nine years old when she would come to our home.

Sister Dolkos was a very faithful member of our lodge and served on many committees. She also wrote letters to the Vestnik. She will always be a member of the lodge.

Here at Lodge No. 92, we have had six members achieve the honor of living to age 96. They were: Sister Marie Tomascik (11-30-73); Sister Helen Zich (8-23-78); Anna David (4-7-82); Sister Bennie Bartek (2-2-91); Sister Olga Moore (5-16-92); Sister Vlasta Dolkos (4-2-93). We hope that many more will be able to receive this honor.

Christi Circle of Women Report on May Meeting

The 24th annual Kocian Family Reunion will be held on Sunday, June 13, 1993 at the SPJST Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood hall. Registration will be at 10 a.m.

A noon meal will be provided for a nominal fee. Everyone is asked to please bring a prize for the auction, and a dessert.

Corpus

The Corpus Christi Circle of Women met on Thursday, May 6 for a brief business meeting, delicious luncheon and a few hours of good fellowship.

Our guests included Jerry Elzner, daughter-in-law, Glenda, and 18-monthold grandson, Jerry; also, Irena Bauta, who is visiting the Elzners from Radom, Poland. Although Irena speaks very little English, she quickly made friends with or Czech speaking members, as Polish and Czech are similar enough to be understood with a little imagination and effort.

A thank you card from Yolanda Rodriguez of Westwood Manor was read.

She said that a week later the residents were still talking about the pretty Easter baskets that they had received from us.

Betty Jurica brought a picture of Yolanda with the baskets and also pictures of our ladies making them. I was particularly happy to see the pictures of our group at work and the end product which was really impressive. Thank you, Betty, and all the ladies who did the work.

We got a report of the wildflower viewing trip taken in April. Adela Sijansky, sister of Lillie Hayek, joined our members for the day. The highlight of the trip seemed to be a mushroom farm that the ladies toured.

We heard all about how mushrooms are grown and harvested daily. Mushrooms overshadowed the wildflowers on this excursion. Jerry Elzner performed the duties of driver once again. He and Milly are making plans for our next trip, which will be to Progresso.

We voted to make a donation to Sokol Corpus Christi and also decided to bring clothing to our next meeting for the Women's Shelter. They have a constant need for personal items and clothes.

Happy Birthday was sung to Sophie Snapka, who owned up to 48—backwards. She's one of our youngest older members.

Door prizes were donated by Carrie Veselka, Mary Ann Elzner, Velma Malchar, Leona Matula, and Lil Hruska, who brought another beautiful begonia plant. Our guest, Irena Bauta, Georgia Kubala, Marcellina Mokry, Lillian Coville, Betty Jurica and Ella Simcik won the prize which included a Kleenex box made by Mary Ann and a jar of pickles put up by Leona.

We enjoyed several games of bingo, finishing off with blackout for which Kathy Marek furnished two prizes. We decided to play again at our June 3 meeting.

Skrabanek-Marek Reunion The time has come for our annual gettogether. This year it will be on Saturday, June 12 at the Seaton School lunchroom Registration will be at 10 a.m. with the noon lunch at 12:30 p.m. As usual, we are asking you to please contact any and all family members who may not read this notice. This year we are going to provide the meat. Each family is asked to bring side dishes and deserts. Plates, napkins, utensils, tea and coffee will also be provided. If you would like any other drinks you must provide them on your own. The cost of the reunion will be $3 per person.

Reunion

Descendants of Joseph Orsak and Razina (Krupala) Orsak will gather for their seventh reunion on Saturday, July 1 , 0, 1993 at the Portwood Pavilion in Seymour, Texas. Also invited are acquaintances and family friends. Registration for the reunion will begin at 8 a.m. A catered meal will be served at noon. Price is $8 for adults and $3 for children under 10; children under age five are free. Families are asked to provide the desserts.

Each family is asked to bring old family pictures, albums, family histories, and other memorabilia. After the business meeting, bingo will be available. The city pool will also be open for those who would like to indulge. The Old Settler's Reunion and Rodeo in Seymour and the Bomarton Homecoming are available for your weekend enjoyment.

In Memoriam Resolution of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 24, Cyclone, express our sympathy and heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of ALVIN F. COUFAL, age 63, of Temple, who died on Saturday, March 6, 1993 at his home.

Service s for Mr. Coufal were held at 2 p.m., Monday, March 8 at HarperTalasek Funeral Home with the Rev. Eugene Kotrla officiating. Burial was in Seaton Cemetery.

Mr. Coufal was born in Holland, Texas and lived in Bell County all of his life. He served in the Army during the Korean War. He married Doris Urbanovsky on February 22, 1958.

He was a member of the VFW Post in Temple and was also a member of SPJST Lodge No. 24, Cyclone.

Mr. Coufal worked for Temple Products for 43 years and was a manager at the time of his death.

Survivors include his wife Doris Coufal of Temple; four sons, Calvin Coufal of Belton and Randy Coufal, Michael Coufal and Charles Coufal, all of Temple; three daughters, Lyndia Robinson of Belton, Susan Robinson and Karen Coufal of Temple; three sisters, Clara Coufal of Zabcikville, Olga Christy and Bessie Houy of Temple; a brother, John Coufal of Zabcikville and ten grandchildren.

Resolution Committee, Arleen Mayeux Carol Chervenka

Resolution of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge Karnes, No. 93, Hobson, Texas, in behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed Lodge Sister JUSTINE MARGARET PLOCH, of Gillett, Texas, who died on March 14, 1993 in St. Jude's Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. She was 84 years, nine months and seven days of age. She was born to Frank J. and Joseph Jurach Prasek on June 7, 1908 in Sweet Home, Texas and grew up in Karnes City, Texas.

Justine Prasek, then a young lady, decided to see and seek work in San Antonio, where she was employed by a family as a maid and cook. In those days of ice boxes, ice was delivered daily to that residence by tall handsome Julian Ploch. It is not recorded if she sometimes served him coffee and some of her kolaches in the kitchen-she could bake all of the old Czech favorites.

They were married in San Antonio on April 18, 1928. Mr. and Mrs. Julian Ploch left the city and moved to a farm and ranch near Gillett, Texas. There Mr. Ploch died on July 14, 1969 and his wife and children continued the ranch operation until her death.

Sister Ploch enjoyed the companionship of others, her membership and par-

ticipation in church and SPJST affairs, and was especially proud of her Czech heritage.

She is survived by her son, William A. Ploch of San Antonio; two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Louise Franta of Karnes City and Mrs. Mary Jo Janak of Angleton, Texas; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Requiem mass was celebrated at St. Cornelius Catholic Church in Karnes City with Rev. Thomas Palmer and Rev. Frank Kurzaj officiating. Interment followed in the Karnes City Cemetery under the direction of Rhodes funeral home.

Expression of Sympathy On behalf of our entire membership, we, the Resolution Committee of Danbury Lode No. 139, wish to extend our sincere sympathy to the family of EMMA G. McMILLAN, who passed away at the age of 80.

A long time resident of Angleton, Sister McMillan was born in Thomaston.

She became the first woman attorney in Brazoria County and was the first woman city attorney for the city of Angleton where she also served as an assistant district attorney. She also taught school.

She was a member of the Order of The Eastern Star, the Who's Who of Texas and Who's Who International, the Texas Business Association, and the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, served as a trustee of the church and was active in several senior citizen groups.

Survivors are: a sister, Avery Davis of San Antonio; a brother, W.M. Garrett of Angleton; and several nieces and nephews.

Palms Funeral Home was in charge of funeral arrangements.

Resolution Committee Faye Wilson Lorenda Baldwin

Expression of Sympathy We, the members of SPJST Lodge No. 28, Karel Jonas, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sympathy to the bereaved family of our lodge brother, DR. JOHN DANIEL SCHUHMANN, age 83, of East Bernard, who died March 22, 1993 at his home after an extended illness. He was born on January 15, 1910, in Dime Box to Albert and Emma Krenek Schuhmann.

Dr. Schuhmann attended Schreiner Institute from 19271929 and graduated from the University of Texas in 1931 and the University of Texas Medical School in 1935. He married Dorothy Russell on August 10, 1936, in Cleveland, Ohio.

In, July 1936, Dr. Schuhmann was fresh out of medical school and drove through East Bernard. He liked the town and needed a place to open his medical

practice. Fortunately, for East Bernard and the surrounding area, he settled here, opened an office and never left. Dr. Schuhmann built the Albert Schuhmann Hospital in East Bernard. It opened January 1940 and finally closed its doors in 1968.

He was a trusteee on the East Bernard ISD school board from 1939 to 1966, serving as president for 15 years. He was also a member of the Wharton County Junior College Board of Trustees from 1968 to 1992.

Dr. Schuhmann was an original member of the East Bernard water board and was instrumental in developing the community's water and sewer system. He was a charter member of the East Bernard Lions Club and was a member of the Foundation Board of Caney Valley Memorial Hospital in Wharton.

In 1960, he developed the town's first housing addition, known as the Schuhmann Addition. He was also a member of the TMA, AMA, Southern Medical Association and the American Association of Physicians and Surgeons. Ii 1990, Dr Schuhmann received the Ashbel Smith Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Texas Medical School. Dr. Schuhmann was a 56-year resident and practicing physician of East Bernard. He was also a member of Karel Jonas Lodge No. 28 for 55 years.

Funeral services were held March 24 at the East Bernard United Methodist Church with the Rev. Weldon Morton and the Rev. J. Quintan Kimbro officiat ing. Burial was in East Bernard Methodist Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Russell Schuhmann of East Bernard; daughters and son-in-law: Jane Schuhmann Warnick of Houston and Maxine Schuhmann and Dr. Tim Canty of La Jolla, California; son and daughter-inlaw: John Daniel and Melanie Schuhmann, Jr. of San Jose, California; sisters: Louise Schuhmann Spacek and Ella Schuhmann Spacek, both of Dime Box; a nephew, Joe A. Spacek of Austin; grandchildren: Todd, Timothy and Tabitha Canty, Shannon and Del Hegemeyer, Philip, Alyson and Mary Warnick, Leslie Schuhmann and Mark and Derek Mello; and great-grandchildren, Lisa and Collin Hegemeyer.

Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 17, Novy Tabor, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother, LOUIS HAI SLER, who died April 4, 1993 in a Houston Hospital at the age of 88.

Brother Haisler was born in the Tunis Community on April 28, 1904, the son of Frank and Frances Haisler. He was a resident of Burleson County where he farmed until 1948. At that time, he moved to Houston and worked as a carpenter until 1972, when he retired. - He later moved to Porter, Texas.

Brother Haisler was married to Millie Odstrcil on March 31, 1928.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Millie Haisler; one daughter and son-in-law, Doris and Sammie Clark of Porter; four brothers, Henry Haisler, Robert Haisler, Walter Haisler and Ludwik Haisler, all of Temple; two grandsons and their wives; two great-granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held April 6, 1993 at the Brookside Funeral Chapel in Houston with the Rev. Robert Durham officiating. Interment followed at Brookside Memorial Park.

Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 17, New Tabor, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge sister, LYDIA ELLA ODSTRCIL, who passed away on Wednesday, April 21, 1993 in a Bryan nursing facility.

Mrs. Odstrcil was born on September 6, 1904 in the New Tabor Community of Burleson County, the daughter of the late Frank and Frances Ondrasek Trcalek.

She attended local schools and on November 17, 1926, she married Willie R. Odstrcil in Caldwell.

Mrs. Odstrcil was a member of the Cooks Point Brethren Church and a member of the Christian sisters. She was a 50-year member of SPJST Lodge No. 17 in New Tabor. Her hobbies and enjoyment were in sewing, quilting, gardening, cooking and in family times and get togethers. Her family states that she nurtured those in need and those in sickness.

She is preceded in death by her husband, her, parents, two brothers, Edward and Henry Trcalek, and one grandson, Colby Kevin Odstrcil. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Samuel R. and Ina Odstrcil of Cooks Point; three daughters and sons-in-law, Willie Mae and Billie Groce of Caldwell, Emma Lee and Frankie T. Kubin of Bryan, and Barbara Jean and Rudy Rahnert of Houston; two sisters-in-law and one brother-inlaw, Cora Trcalek of Baytown, and L.G. and Adele Stephenson of Crosby; and ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 23 at Strickland Funeral Home in Caldwell with Rev. Henry Beseda, Rev. Norman Haisler and Rev. Joseph Polasek officiating. Interment followed in the Masonic Cemetery in Caldwell. Pallbearers were her family: Marcus Groce, Jeffrey Kubin, Kent Kubin, Lance Lewis, Cory Odstrcil, Paul Rahnert and Joey Skrivanek.

Youth Section Letters Lodge 177, Academy Youth Club Reports on May Meeting The May meeting of the Lodge No. 177, Academy Youth Club was held on Wednesday, May 12, 1993. The meeting was called to order by President Renelle Wright. Christy Fritz lead the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. We received a letter from Joni Lange saying that she enjoyed attending our meeting last month.

She also reminded everyone to send in their camp registration forms.

Our social for May was held at Actionworld Bowling Center. Everyone had a good time, and since we had so much fun, we now are considering a social which will be a pool table party.

During our monthly meeting, we elected new officers for the upcoming youth calendar year. They are: President-Christy Fritz Vice President-Jessica Lyon Secretary/Treasurer-Regina Wright Reporter-Stephen Hanusch Our youth leader, Karen Bartek, gave her monthly report which was that all LIT applications should be turned in quickly, and the dates for camp and district YAD. She also distributed forms for YAD entries.

We also appointed committees for the following year. Committees are a very important part of the youth club, and we hope that by serving on these, each member will better understand the meaning of teamwork and achieving goals. We look forward to having a very successful year.

Teamwork will be evident when several of our younger members participate in a group talent program for district YAD. We wish them the best of luck!

Also, we are asking each member to contribute either a small box of crayons or a small coloring book for the International Missions of Russia..

Thanks to all who showed up to help at the highway pick up. I was unable to attend due to their obligations, but I hear it went very well. Sorry about the poison ivy, Gladys.

The meeting was called to order by our President Jennifer at 2:34 p.m. Kristain led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

There were eight members present and four adults and one guest, Kristain.

We talked about getting ready for YAD and our summer outings. We adjourned at 3:16.

We all enjoyed dinner with our lodge.

We skated while the adults played dominoes and other games.

On Saturday, May 1st, District Three welcomed SPJST State King Paul Pflughaupt , State Queen Lindsey Michalak, State Duke Darrell Havemann and State Duchess Tamara Williams to the Annual Ennis Polka Festival dance and parade.

Weekend festivities for the royal court began Friday night at Lodge No. 25's Polka Festival dance. We would like to thank Lodge No. 25 President and Youth Leader Linda Trojacek and District Three DYC Bessie Petr for making this evening very special.

Paul and Lindsey greeted spectators in a red convertible, courtesy of Terry Gregory Motors of Ennis, driven by

District Three Director Sid Pokladnik.

We would like to thank Mr. Pokladnik for taking time out of his busy schedule to spend the morning with us.

The Polka Festival parade was the final official appearance by the State King and Queen. On August 14th, at State Royalty, Paul and Lindsey will relinquish their crown to the next State King and Queen. We would like to thank the royal court for the outstanding way in which they represented the SPJST youth, and we wish them the best in future endeavors.

Starosta obce Martin Pl gek se tehdy u okresniho hejtmanstvi dotazoval, jak to bude s cirkevnimi platy vaznoucimi na usedlostech evangelikft, jejichi majitele se vystehovali a usedlosti pak ziskali katolietf majitele. Dne 22. prosince 1854 mu bylo sdeleno, le tyto naboienske platy nezanikaji. Starosta Plgek, jen byl evangelik, si toto sdeleni vysvetlil tak, 2e novf majitele, i kdy byli katoliky, maji odvadet platy evangelickemu farati. Tento jeho postup katolici v Hogfalkove oprdvnene povalovali za chybnk a do&dovali se napravy. Udalosti v Hogfalkove se ov gem nestaly samy o sobs pfieinou vystehovalectvi, ale byly spige jeho drisledkem. Faktem je, ani v 2adostech o vydani povoleni k vystehovani se nabo2'enske problemy ani jednou neuvadeji jako hlavni duvod k vystehovani.

Being big didn't save the dinosaur.

Apparently, some insurance companies assume bigness will be the key to their survival.

In our opinion, that's a faulty assumption.

Witness the dinosaur. Being big didn't save him. In fact, it probably hastened his demise.

For the dinosaur grew too large for his limited brain. As a result, signals- took too long to get from one part of the body to another. In the end, he simply couldn't respond quickly enough to change.

The real issue — then and now — is flexibility. Adapting to a changing, often confusing, environment.
