Supreme Lodge Meeting Next Week It was a quiet week at the Home Office. Not slow, mind you, but quiet From the looks of things, it appears that our Supreme Lodge Officers and Home Office personnel are readying for what promises to a busy month.

Next week, for instance, on March 11 and 12, the Supreme Lodge will be meeting in Temple. Based on my notes of the January Supreme Lodge meeting, three very important and far-reach ing items will be discussed at this session. They are as follows: (1) The presentation of a business action plan by Supreme Lodge Officers; (2) Discussion of a lodge recognition and incentive program that more effectively links fraternal and financial goals; and (3) Procedures and guidelines gov erning the new annuity program.

The first item the development of a plan for achieving SPJST goals and objectives-is a particularly ambitious and necessary undertaking. What our Society becomes tomorrow depends, in large part, on the choices our Supreme Lodge members make today.

The SPJST is a financially strong organization with a solid fraternal program. Certainly, we have a lot to be proud of; but, we're also smart enough to know that when things need fixing, we had better get in there and fix them.

One question that continues to be raised is what can we do to help our lodges combat apathy and encourage more member participation?

A simple question with no simple solution. What works well in one lodge or district may fizzle in another. Hopefully, this question, along with some possible solutions, will be addressed in the Society's new business plan. I'll report on the new plan as details become available.

How and What to Write?

Last week, I received a courteous letter from a new lodge correspondent As a new reporter, she wanted to know what, if any, was the standard format for submitting her letters to the Vestnik.

This question of, "How and what. should I write," has come before. To it, I would like to respond, "Let your imagination be your guide." Lodge news can be interesting and even entertaining.

It doesn't have to be "cut and dried."

Browse the letters section of your Vestnik and you'll see how some of your fellow reporters sometimes breathe a little life into their letters.

To our new reporters, here are some things you might want to think about before composing your next letter.

Consider telling readers of some humorous or memorable incident that happened at your last lodge activity or meeting. Or, you might want to share some of the colorful dialogue that took place at your last event-anything that helps to capture the color and personality of the good people that are the heart beat of your lodge and of this Society. It takes practice, but you may want to give it a try and see what your fellow members think.

Some of the most treasured words in the English language are those of a person's name in print. Please take care to check the spelling of all names before submitting them for publication. I am familiar with a lot of our members names and occasionally catch misspellings; however, there are still so many that I do not know. At that, I want to thank those of you who have been taking a little extra time to print people's names in your handwritten correspondence to the Vestnik. It's difficult to over emphasize how much that helps me during the typesetting process. More than anything else, it ensures that your interesting lodge report or club letter will looks its best in print Again, regarding the contents, it doesn't matter if your letters sometimes run a little long. That's okay-as long as they are written truthfully, without excessive ornamentation, and in the spirit of fraternalism. Interesting and entertaining letters are encouraged and are always welcome.

On Saturday, March 13, Lodge No. 177 Academy hosts the annual Local Lodge Workshop. As of this writing, preregistration for the workshop was going strong. Like many of you who will be attending, I am interested in hearing what Laurie Moore, our guest speaker has to say. Hopefully, we will all be able to return home with some good ideas for injecting some renewed vigor and spirit into our respective lodges.

March also marks the commencement of our Spring District meetings.

Here's A Good Answer to the Knedlik Question

State SPJST King Doesn't Mind the Hugs and Kisses

Dear Mr. Vanicek, I noticed one of your readers needed a knedlik recipe. Here are several:

Dear Members, I am writing this letter to stress how endurance and perseverance (my speech topic) helped me set and reach my goals for acquiring the title of SPJST State King. The first goal was to write a speech. The second, and the hardest goals, was to memorize the speech. The third was to get up in front of people and say it. Now, all I have to deal with is the hugs and kisses, which I don't mind. Of course, there are the pictures . . . all those pictures. As I get older, I'll look at these pictures and remember the special moments and new friends that this title has brought me.

I did not think that I would ever achieve the honor of being State King.

Following my two older brothers, Lee and Karl, around Lodge 88, I thought about Royalty and YAD before I was even in the Youth Club. My Mom always told me, "Some day, you can go up on sage and compete—and even win—if you set your mind to it."

Teachers told me that I had a knack for writing; so, I decided to test my abilities by writing a speech for the District King competition. I really did not want to compete, but, I figured that I had nothing to lose. After I won at district, I said that I would not want to go through this again.

My mother looked at me and said, "Well, all you have to do is win at State and you won't be eligible to run the next time."

So, I gave it my best and got lucky.

It has been 18 years since a . State King was crowned from Lodge 88. Lin Lesak earned this honor in 1974 and he has carried his public speaking into a career with 95.7 KIKK radio as a traffic announcer (Captain Eddie) for the Greater Houston area. I am very proud to follow in his footsteps as King and to represent my home lodge and district.

All of the many contestants from District Five who have showed their determination and courage to compete, gave me the incentive to try it myself. So, to all you guys, "This one's for ya'11."

Flour Dumplings

4 cups flour 1 and 112 cups milk 114 cup butter or margarine 1 teaspoon salt 114 teaspoon single-acting baking powder 1 egg Cream butter and salt, then add the egg and beat until foamy. In another bowl, sift the baking power with the flour and add by spoonfuls, alternating with milk, to creamed butter mixture.

Let this stand for 30 minutes, then drop by spoonfuls into boiling water and cook for eight to ten minutes.

You can tell when they are done by cutting one open. The inside should be dry and not mushy.

Potato Dumplings

2 lbs. peeled potatoes 3 cups instantized flour 1 egg 1/4 cup butter or margarine (melted) Grate raw potatoes. Add salt, egg and flour and mix well. Drop this mixture by spoonfuls into boiling water and cook for six to eight minutes. Pour butter or margarine over dumplings after removing them from water.

Fruit Dumplings

2 cups instantized flour .

1-1 112 pounds fruit 1 cup milk 114 cup butter or margarine 3 egg yolks 1 teaspoon salt Bring milk and butter to a boil. Pour in flour all at once and beat quickly.

When a ball forms, remove the pot from the heat and add salt and egg yolks, one at a time, mixing well.

Break off pieces and wrap around fruit, sealing so fruit juices cannot leak out. Each dough casing should be about 1/8-inch thick. Drop into boiling water and cook five to seven minutes, turning once. Remove from water when done and cut each in half.

Serve with melted butter and sugar and ground poppy seeds.

13, Dime Box Reports on February Meeting

Lodge

The regular monthly meeting was called to order on Sunday, February 21

by President Ricky Ford. There were 14 members present. Everyone stood for the Pledge of Allegiance and observed a moment of silence out of respect for our departed member William L. Pratho.

The minutes of the last meeting were read by Sister Dorothy Rachel and the treasurer's report was given by Sister Debbie Kostelka. Both were approved as read.

Sandra Balcar and Nila Young were accepted as new members of our lodge.

Lee Roy Matocha will be featured at a polka dance to be held on Saturday, March 27 from 8 to 12 p.m. We hope to see a lot of waltzers and polka dancers her for this evening of fun.

Karel Jonas, No. 28, East Bernard Meets March 7 Lodge

Dear Members: The third month of the year is here and the second is history. Now, on the first Sunday, the 7th of March, Lodge Karel Jonas will hold its third monthly meeting of 1993 at 2 p.m. in the meeting room at 106 Leveridge Street in the SPJST Hall building. Besides the standard agenda, there might be some additional business brought forward.

A fraternal hour luncheon will convene after the business meeting.

On Sunday, February 7th, the monthly meeting convened on time with two very welcome guests present. We wish to thank District VI FAC, Sister Helen Zabransky and her sister, Sister Patsy Zabransky for visiting with us. Both are members of Lodge No. 4, Hallettsville.

Very little business was handled.

With all food and drink being donated, the fraternal hour luncheon was enjoyed by all present.

Commentary: The following commentary is the opinion of this writer and is his alone and no one else's. There are those members who may agree with this writer.

The last meeting on the 7th of February had only one resident or person pre-

sent from the immediate East Bernard area. All other members were from out of town.

It is sad, when so many live close in the area, and do not take the time to attend. This is especially bad when the lodge could use these warm bodies to help in the deliberation of lodge business.

This lodge, Lodge Karel Jonas, will be 95 years old on the 19th of March. It has survived the Spanish-American War, World War I, The Great Depression of the 1930s, World War II, Korea and Vietnam—and even the attempts of a misguided man of the cloth did not do as much damage as the lackadaisical attitude that will one day cut through the horse hair and kill the lodge. said!

A special thanks goes to our juvenile member, Jessica Kelner, who was thoughtful enough to remember Valentine's Day by giving out a candy valentine to everyone present at the meeting.

63, Sweet Home to Meet March 7 Lodge

Lodge No. 63, Sweet Home will hold its monthly meeting and social on March 7th at the Sweet Home Community Center in Sweet Home beginning at 1:30 p.m. Our business meeting will consist of the usual reports and planning of our annual June dinner honoring our 50-year members and our 96-year-old paid-up life recipient. Door prizes will be drawn and someone with a birthday in January, February or March will win a birthday cake made by the famous chef Franklin Bolech.

Following the meeting, an Easter egg hunt will be held for the little children and, new this year, will be an egg hunt for the adults. Prizes will be awarded.

After the hunts, games will be played.

A lunch will be served. Members are asked to bring sandwiches or sweets. The lodge will furnish the liquid refreshments.

Be sure you mark the change in the date from our usual third Sunday in the month. We had to make the change because the hall was booked. So, get your grandchildren, children, grandparents, parents, relatives and friends; find your Easter baskets for the egg hunts, and come out to the meeting and social on March 7th in Sweet Home.

Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje Reports on Meeting The El Campo-Hillje SPJST Lodge No. 40 met at 9:45 p.m. on February 15, 1993. The meeting followed the Social Games with nine officers and three members attending.

Rita Vanek, President, called the meeting to order by leading the members in the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a silent moment of prayer remembering our deceased and sick members.

The minutes of the January meeting were approved as printed in the Vestnik by motion of Eugene Valigura, seconded

by Bennie Reck. The motion carried.

The following correspondence was received and read: (1) Terrnination/Lapses report for January, 1993.

(2) Transfer Request Certificates transferring Anthony T. Pall and Lillie Mae Pall from FOrt Worth SPJST Lodge No. 92 to El-Camp Lodge No. 40.

We welcome Lillie Mae and Tony Pall to our lodge.

(3) Letters from Jerry Mikulas, Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary, advising of refunds to our lodge as of December 31, 1992.

(4) Letter from Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar with reference to 50-year members and presentation of 40-year pin.

(6) A letter from Bernard M. Gebala, Supreme Lodge Vice President and Project Coordinator of the Local Lodge Workshop to be held Saturday, March 13, 1993 at SPJST Lodge No. 177, Academy.

Treasurer Madeline Shimek gave the financial reports, copies of which are subject to audit.

F.A.C. Dora Lee Kopecky presented a proposed schedule of activities for the year. A motion by was made by Bennie Reck, seconded by Madeline Shimek, to accept this proposed schedule. The motion carried.

Trustee Eugene Valigura made a suggestion that we prepare a 1994 Schedule of Activities before year end in order that some might be approved at our Christmas Social.

A note from Mary Ann Karasek announced the activities of the Youth Club.

An announcement was made that our District Six Meeting would be held on Sunday, April 18, 1993.

The following contributions were approved by motion, second and vote: (1) $50 to purchase prizes for the District Six Raffle for Youth Clubs

47, Seaton Announces Results of Straight Domino Playoff Lodge

Dear Brothers and Sisters, We held our straight domino playoff on Friday, February 19th with six teams competing. The Three teams that will represent Lodge 47 at the State Tournament will be: Jimmy Coufal and Johnny Klecka; Joe Jim Kohut and Dana Glaser; and Gene and Ann Hejl. The State Tournament will be hosted by Lodge 47 on Saturday, March 6 at Seaton Star Hall, east of Temple, on Highway 53. More details will be furnished by the State F.A.C. Frank Klinkovsky as to starting times, etc.

I would appreciate if some of the lodge sisters could bring some jello salads, kolaches, or cakes, etc. A meal will be served at noon and snacks and coffee will be available for the breaks and before play begins at 10 a.m.

No. 81, Needville Reports on Lodge Activities Lodge

Our first meeting of the year was held on Sunday, January 17, 1993 with fortythree members and guests present. Alas, my letter covering this meeting seems to have been lost in the U. S. postal system somewhere between Needville and Temple, so no letter appeared in the Vestnik.

The regular February meeting was held on Sunday, the 21st, with an attendance of 35. For our noon meal, members brought a meat dish along with a vegetable and dessert. Everyone enjoyed the meal. What a variety of delicious meat dishes! The Kitchen Committee

thanks everyone who prepared and brought the good food.

At 1 p.m., President Adolph Macha called the business meeting to order. Sister Darlene Blinka led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. A moment of silence was observed in memory of our departed members Tillie Mikeska and Cecilia Calk. May they rest in peace.

All officers were present. The minutes of the January meeting were read by Secretary Mary Werner and accepted with a minor correction.

Correspondence read by Secretary Werner included a thank you note from Annie Mikeska and a letter and check from the Supreme Lodge covering Lodge 81's share of premium refunds, based on membership, now numbering approximately 892. Nine of our members will be receiving their 50-year membership pins in 1993.

The reports of Treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendall and Special Fund Chairman Gilbert Walzel were accepted as read.

President Macha read a letter about the workshop for local lodge officers (and interested members) to be held in March at Lodge No. 177, Academy.

We were glad to have our District Five Director Brother Louis Hanus with us.

His reports from the Supreme Lodge meetings that he attends are always informative. He told us of a six-=year study completed to be presented to Congress in an effort to preserve the tax-exempt status of fraternal organizations. In view of changing economic trends, Brother Hanus pointed out that the Supreme Lodge is seeking approval from the State of Texas to issue a new annuity plan.

Best wishes go to Brother Joe Hubenak who is on our sick list. Mary Matcek reported that her grandson, Kyle Matcek of Splendora, has recovered from a bout with pneumonia. Everyone is glad to have Brother Edwin Susan back with us, looking fit and chipper after recent major surgery.

Brother Walzel led the discussion of the financial audit of Lodge No. 81 for 1992.

The books were reported in good order.

Thanks are extended to Brother Alvin Blinka, who donated his time and labor to clean the lodge gutters.

In the January meeting, it was decided to repair the wooden sign at the entrance to the lodge premises. Brothers Gilbert Walzel, Alvin Blinka and Vincent Newman, Jr. volunteered to do the work.

They did an excellent job of repairing, painting and rewiring. All labor on this project was donated by these three members. Lodge 81 appreciates your fraternal donation.

Since our last meeting, Brother and Sister Walzel, over a period of three days, cleaned, waxed and buffed the entire lodge hall floor. This project was also a donation from the Walzels. We members thank you, Benita and Gilbert. At the present time, Sister Walzel is also thanked for donating services to the Special Fund.

Brother Walzel brought members up to date on the progress of the carport type of shelter and slab near the kitchen door.

Members approved a motion that a fourfoot wide sidewalk be laid from the shelter slab to the lodge door. By our March meeting, this project will be complete and I'll have a detailed report of the project and volunteers involved from the tree-cutting to completion.

Under new business, members voted to make a monetary donation to Project Graduation at Needville High School for the Seniors' drug and alcohol free party on graduation night.

A motion was made and approved that Lodge No. 81 again sponsor a Little League baseball team for the 1993 season.

Kellen Elyse Dorman of Rosenberg was accepted as a new member of Lodge No. 81. We welcome you, Kellen Elyse.

Our March meeting will be held on Sunday, March 21, 1993. Members voted to invite the nine 50-year pin recipients to attend our noon dinner and receive their pins in person at the 1 p.m. business meeting. These nine brothers and sisters, who became SPJST members in 1943 are: Mary Ann Fojtik, Vlasta Frenzel, Erlin L. Horelica, Franklin Krobot, Beatrice E. Pickett, Calvin L. Shefcik, Eugene C. Shefcik, Robert J. Spurny, and Mary Sue Zemanek.

Mark your calendars now and plan to attend this "Pin Party" on Sunday, March 21. Let's have a big turnout for this special occasion. Sister Benita Walzel will be baking the beef roast and members are asked to bring a vegetable and dessert.

Let us know when you observe a birthday, anniversary or some special occasion. Some recent birthdays I'm aware of are those of Mary Matcek, Jeanette Newman, Gilbert Walzel and Cheryl Newman.

Recent wedding anniversaries were those of Leonard and Viola Jezek (47 years); Edwin and Winnie Susan (51 years); Louis and Oleta Hanus; Vincent and Louis Newman (50 years). Forgive me if I've omitted any names.

At Needville High School, freshman Jason Vallet is excelling in powerlifting in the 114-pound class. The team has placed in meets at El Campo, Runge and East Bernard.

A three-man team from Needville High School competed on January 21 at Sam Houston University in Huntsville and placed fourth in the area of Tractor Mechanics. The Lodge 81 member of this team was Bradley Vallet, a junior student. The Vallet brothers are sons of Gilbert and Benita Walzel.

Congratulations to Kristie Jablonski!

Kristie, one of our young members, is in the fourth grade in the Rosenberg schools, and a member of the Lamar 4-H Club. In January, Kristi was named grand champion in the fruit and vegetable category on the subjunior level.

The competition was held on Saturday, January 16, and she shared her prizewinning salad with us at the meeting on the 17th. I'm sure that trophy and ribbon will be followed by many more. Kristie is the daughter of Shirley and Donald Jablonski. Grandparents are Darlene and Alvin Blinka.

Student members of Lodge 81 on recent honor rolls at their schools included Miranda Wiles, Kristie Jablonski, Bradley Vallet, Cheryl Newman, Amanda Newman, Melissa Vallet, Corey Walzel and Lynnette Newman.

88, Houston Reports on February Meeting

Lodge

President Ermis called the meeting to order at 7:30 after which the colors were presented. All officers were present except Shirley Stonaker and Legal Advisor Richard Schnell. The January meeting minutes were approved. Eight new members and four transfers were accepted into membership. One member, Lester Zappe, passed away and the members stood for a moment of silence in his memory.

FAC Homer Alexander has collected 3435 pairs of eyeglasses with the most recent donors being Noble and Kay Keating. Clothes donations have dropped, so don't forget Homer when you clean out your closets. The next AARP Drivers Course is scheduled April 15-16.

Barbara Linney's report for the youth included the trip to the NASA Space Center and the possibility of the Youth walking again this year for the March of Dimes. To date, they have collected $1,613.12 from can sales for the local scholarship fund. Wonderful job done by the youth, leaders and members of Lodge 88 who care enough to give of their time and talent. Special thanks to John Broz and Ernest Anders for helping with cans last month.

Inspired by the song, It later than You Think, Entertainment Chairman Viola Cox encouraged all to dance, if you can—it is later than you think. Two new members, David Darilek and Jo Nagy have been added to that committee. This committee is working real hard, and is bringing back some big band dances which are gaining in popularity. Don't forget to dance, if you can.

The meeting adjourned at 9:10 p.m. with refreshments being donated by anniversary celebrants, Steve and Estelle Kelly, Bennie and Stacie Kocich, Edwin and Agnes Gerlich, and Homer and Rita Alexander—which altogether added to many years of marital bliss. Dennis and June Kocich celebrated their anniversary, bUt they have a long way to go to catch up with the others.

88, Houston Reports on Member and Lodge Activities

Lodge 88, Houston Hosts State Royalty Reception

Clara Ann Urbanovsky lost her sister on February 8, 1993 in Seymour, Texas after a long illness. Gus and Clara Ann, with their son, Norman, made a sad trip to Seymour to attend the funeral of Mrs. Stacey Hajek. The services were held at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Seymour, Texas on Thursday, February 11, 1993. The Urbanovskys and all the rest of the family members will miss Tracy. Lodge 88 is extending their deepest sympathy.

I was watching television the other night and all of a sudden, this lady came dancing down the Galveston Mardi Gras aisle just as happy as could be. You'd never guess who it was—Lillian Finn.

Josephine and Leander Pflughaupt also saw her. We were so amazed. Now she's on an eight-day cruise out of Galveston. Lillian is a great person.

She's had so many tragedies in her life, but she told me that with God's help, she manages to overcome these heartaches.

Lillian enjoys her lovely family.

Mrs. Birdie Hilsher Peck, 78 died Saturday, February 13, 1993. Born September 30, 1914 in Fayetteville, Texas, she was a Houston resident for more than 59 years. Mrs. Pech was preceded in death by her husband of more than 40 years, Alfred L. Hilsher, organizer and chairman of Hilsher's Home Supply Company, Inc. She was further preceded in death by her husband of almost 12 years, John J. Pech.

Mrs. Pech was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 88, the Sons of Hermann, Royal Neighbors of America, KJZT, the Czech Society of America, Catholic Daughters of America and the Daughters of the Confederacy. She was also a member of the All Saints Catholic Church.

Survivors include two sons, Robert and William Hilsher, their wives, five grandchildren, two sisters, Ann Fluckinger and Loraine Krutilek and their families. The funeral liturgy was held on Wednesday, February 17, 1993 at 11 a.m. at the All Saints Catholic Church with the Father Carl A. Tenhundfeld officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Hospice at the Texas Medical Center, 1905 Holcombe, Houston, Texas 77030.

On Sunday, January 17, 1993, from 3 to 8 p.m., Lodge 88 houston honored four of their own youth by hosting a reception in their honor. To have both King and Queen win from the same district and lodge in the same year is rare.

The evening started with a receiving line of the royalty and their parents.

There were about 200 in attendance, including Howard Leshikar, Supreme Lodge President, his wife Mary and Brian Vanicek, Editor of the Vestnik. A buffet, which included meat balls, chicken wings, mixed sliced meats for sandwiches, vegetable and cheese plates, and for dessert, a large decorated cake was served.

Marie Stayton, District Youth Counselor for District Five introduced the Royalty and their families. A presentation of a decorated scrap book was made to Paul, Lindsey, Darrell and Tamara. In

turn, both Lindsey and Paul spoke a few words expressing their thanks for the support and encouragement they have received. Then, they surprised both DYC Marie Stayton and Barbara Linney (Youth Leader of Lodge 88 and assistant DYC) by presenting them with bouquets of red roses. Both Marie and Barbara played large roles in helping Lindsey and Paul make the decision to compete, by giving them the guidance to make sure they were on the right track, and by extending the encouragement to let them know that they were capable of winning.

We need more people like Marie and Barbara for our youth.

The Moonriders provided the music for the evening. The grand march was led by Bonnie Cox and her husband.

The day was enjoyed by all. It was good to see the youth and adults having fun together.

I would like to extend a special thank you to Lodge 88 and the 1992 Board Members for honoring Paul, Lindsey, Darrell, and Tamara. Likewise, I would like to say thank you to Marie Stayton and all her behind-the-scenes helpers who put it all together. We , the parents, are grateful for your generosity and recognition of a job well done. Friendship (Submitted by Lodge 92, -Fort Worth) It has been said that if you have but one good friend, you are truly blessed, more than one and you are doubly blessed. I feel a friend should be cared for as a rare flower, sprinkled with kindness, nourished with love and never, never taken for granted. Friends are one of the most precious gifts in life. How lonely it would be if we had no friends to share our joys, comfort us when we are blue, and listen, really listen to us when we talk. We can be completely ourselves, never needing to stand on ceremony because there is an unspoken bond between us. Troubles are halved when shared with friends, and burdens are lightened because they care; they enrich our hearts.

Friendship means extending ourselves to others, always striving to make new acquaintances. As the flowers in our garden are all unique in their own way so, too, are the different friends we meet. Each friend contributes something to us in life. It does not take every waking moment with friends to seal a friendship; distance can not change the warmth and love you have for one another.

Criticism and jealousy toward a friend should be avoided at all costs. Friends, like fragile flowers, are worth protecting because they are special. If they are not loved for themselves only, it is not a real friendship. No one need be cold and lonely when they could be warm with the sunshine of friends.

I once read a lovely verse that has a lesson for all of us. Quote: "Make new friends, but keep the old, those are silver, these are gold."

Friendship, after all, is just living by the Golden Rule; it must be practiced by both friends to make it grow.

President Lowrina Lindemann called the meeting to order at 11 a.m. She called the roll and and Secretary Rita Alexander read the minutes which were accepted as read. Treasurer Lillie Spies gave the financial report as of January 1993.

We were indeed very sad about our sick members. Secretary-Treasurer Shirley Stonaker was back in the hospital, but is at home now. Our Birthday Club member Alice Bily's husband, Miro Bily, is also in the hospital again.

Our March cooks are Josephine Bishop, martha Walla, Alice Bily and Bessie Lero.

Since we didn't have cooks for April, Mary Kosut made a motion, seconded by Adele Kite to have a covered dish luncheon in April. It passed. The second Wednesday is sandwiches, chips, dips and desserts. The cakes will be furnished by Mary Kosut; Julie Kinnamon, Inez Jeanes, Dona Clooney, Adele Kite and Estelle Kelly.

The First Vice President of the Lodge asked that all of the club members pay their dues, as she's working on the committee book. Unless your dues are paid,your name will not be put in the book.

Our Birthday Club Rules and Regulations have been revised. President Lowrina asked to read them to the members and then suggested that we accept or reject them. They were all accepted, so we hope that all will abide by them.

Gifts were then won by the following: • A candy heart, donated by Lowrina Lindeman was won by Willie Mae Stang.

• Ima Lero donated a neck pillow that was won by Clara Jecmenek.

• Candy donated by Pearl Hanka was won by Margaret Spahr.

• The Calcutta Game was won by Evelyn Mikulas and Jo Buro.

The meeting adjourned at 12 noon.

92, Fort Worth Ladies Circle Reports on Meeting

The meeting of the Ladies Circle of Lodge No. 92 was called to order by President Marie Tesar. Members stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. A new member, Michelle Bandy, was introduced.

The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved as was the treasurer's report. Both were filed as read. A donation was given to the lodge for the use of the hall with another donation to be given at a later date.

Lillie McMillen reported on get-well cars sent to Anna Juran, Mary Pavey, Minnie Ruzicka and a sympathy card that was sent to the family of Agnes Merlick, a long-time member, who passed away recently. A memorial service will be said for her at St. Thomas Church. Members observed a moment of silence in her memory.

Hostesses for March will be Martha Durham, Estabelle Hubenak, Ann

Schneider and Betty Whitehead.

Happy Birthday was sung to Bennie Bartek, Clara Cohen, Pauline Morbitzer, Imogene Reaves and Rose Nieswiadomy.

Door prizes went to Victoria Murphy, Esther Herrera, Shirley Zich, Anna Juran and Rosie Zalesak. Stuffed toy animals were also given as door prizes.

Martha Durham gave a reading titled, "Hugs." Everyone joined in to take the advice. Seems to me the whole world needs a big hug! The meeting adjourned with 40 ladies and nine men present who enjoyed the food and fellowship. Joyce Tesar did a superb job of decorating the hall for the Valentine Dance and wedding. It takes a lot of work and talent and she gives it her best.

Lodge 139, Danbury Reports on February Meeting Wesley Baldwin led the members of Danbury Lodge 139 in the Pledge of Allegiance after President Lonnie Lostak called the meeting to order on February 10.

The minutes of the last meeting were read by Secretary Lorenda Baldwin. She also read thank-you notes and other correspondence received since the last meeting.

A sales representative report was given by Helen Filipp.

A report on the District Five spring

meeting to be held at Lodge 88 on March 14 was given by Vice President Monte Baldwin.

It was announced that Lane. Lostak, son of Lonnie and Eloise Lostak, will be the salutatorian of the 1993 graduating class at Danbury High School.

After Treasurer Eloise Lostak gave her report, the meeting was adjourned and a social was held.

We wish to remind the 1993 graduating high school seniors who are members of Lodge 139 that it is time to apply for the Lodge 139 scholarship. To qualify for the scholarship, the graduate must be a member of SPJST since before the end of his or her freshman year, and scholastically, must be in the top fifteen percent of his or her class.

To apply, the graduate must have the school counselor write a letter stating the grade-point average of the applicant.

The letter should be mailed either to Lonnie Lostak, P.O. Box 633, Danbury, Texas 77534 or to Lorenda Baldwin, Route Seven, Box 15, Alvin, Texas 77511. The application must be received before April 1, 1993.

142, Houston Reports on February Meeting

At 2 p.m. on February 7, our regular monthly meeting was called to order by President Keith Kieschnick. We had 45 members and three guests present. All stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag. Secretary Alice Jochen read the minutes from the previous meeting which stood approved as read.

The roll call of officers and Board of Trustees revealed that all were present.

Correspondence was read by the secretary. These items included: (1) A thank you card for our sympathy extended to the family of Eric Stein at the time of his death.

(2) A notice of the local lodge workshop to be held at Lodge No. 177, Academy on March 13.

(3) Two letters from Brother Jerry Mikulasa. Declaration of a special refund to all lodges that procured new members during 1992 in addition to the regular refund allocated each year; allows each lodge‘ to receive $5 per certificate issued during 1992, excluding annuities. b. The Supreme Lodge authorized that each lodge be refunded at a rate of $3.50 per certificate as of December 31, 1992.

(4) An announcement that Lodge 142 member Daniel D. Kubin will be recognized as a 50-year member in 1993.

The Board of Trustees and Bar Report were read by Henry Hermis, Sr. The Youth Club report was read by Youth Leader Elizabeth Hermis. She reported that the youth donated two boxes of candy valentines (as additional door prizes for a lady and gentleman). Winners of the Youth Club prizes were Dorothy Tumis and Brian Hermis.

The Sick Committee reported that Charles Motl was in the hospital. We hope that he is much better at this time.

Our new member is Helen Morgan; sales representative was Sidon Tumis.

Visitors recognized were: Jo Buri, Joe Gambil and Jo Ann Buri.

and barbecue in observance of the 20th anniversary of our lodge building on May 15, 1993 at Lodge No. 142, 5508 Nolda, Houston, Texas.

Celebrating birthdays in February were Fred Buri on Feb. 29, Rudy Cernuch on Feb. 25, and Brian Hermis Feb. 11.

Celebrating anniversaries in February were Mr. and Mrs. Fred Buri, 28 years on Feb. 27, and Mr. and Mrs. Bertin Doskocil, 55 years on Feb. 22. Viola and Bertin Doskocil were blessed with two sons, Donald and Leonard and seven grandchildren—all wished them a happy anniversary.

On January 17, 1993, Martin and Frieda Kieschnick celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary at Lodge No. 142. They had their children, grandchildren and many friends and relatives there to help them celebrate this joyous occasion. It was a beautiful celebration and everyone wished them many more years of wedded bliss.

The capsule drawing for $20 went to Stephen Witzkowski, who was absent.

The second drawing was for John T. Buri, who was present to claim the $20 prize. Congratulations to John Buri.

Next month's prize reverts back to $10.

The prize for being the oldest member present went to Joyce Molenosky, since she was the oldest member present who had not already won.

Door prizes went to: Pat Schleider, Howard Kieschnick, Lillian Schmidt and Marilyn Spivey.

The meeting adjourned at 2 :45 p.m.

154, Fort Worth Friendship Club Reports on Activities

Dear Members and Friends: I missed the meeting due to a badly sprained ankle. Hopefully, by my next doctor's appointment on March 1st, I will be able to walk. I will try to get this written from the reports I have received.

The meeting was called to order by President Jo Prochaska. Thirty-six members and guests, Lester and Jo Beth Lefts and Billy King were present. She then led all those in attendance in the Pledge of Allegiance. The minutes of the previous meeting were read by Secretary Merel Kovar and the treasurer's report was delivered by Lydia Alholm. Both were approved as read.

Anna Johnson reported on all cards sent. She really had quite a few and read thank you notes form Mary Pavey and Father Sal. Elma Anderson was missed.

She was in Las Vegas—having fun, I'm sure.

Mollie Walker received a special honor for her 99th birthday with a beautifully decorated cake and a card signed by all present. She also received several gifts. May you have many more. She is amazing. Doesn't need glasses and loves her games and keeps on quilting.

We were sorry to hear of all the sadness Rose Nieswidony had experienced.

At our next meeting on March 3, we

will have a White Elephant Auction, so bring something that you can part with.

155, Austin Next Meeting is March 7

Dear Members, Our next regular meeting will be held on March 7 at 2 p.m. in the Faith Community Church, 1800 Peyton Gin Road in Austin. Members, please make an effort to attend.

A well-attended meeting was held on February 7 at the Prasatik Home. President Boriski called the meeting to order with all officers present, except for our treasurer, who was absent due to an illness in his family.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited

by Charles Sponberg. As a tribute to our departed members, Brother Boriski asked for a few moments of silence.

The minutes of the last business meeting held November 1, 1992 at the home of Charles and Mina Sponberg were read and approved. (Please note that with we did not have a regular business meeting during the month of December when we gathered for our Christmas Party.)

Lodge Secretary Raymond Prasatik read communications -from the Supreme Lodge, which included the annual premium refund check and a bonus check to our lodge for new members signed on during 1992. Thank you notes for our Christmas donations from our benefactors were also read. These included notes from the Salvation Army Shoe Fund, S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1 in Taylor and the Austin State School An announcement was also read informing members of the upcoming Local Lodge Workshop that will be held in Academy on March 13th. Mileage reimbursement of 30 cents per mile will be paid by the Supreme Lodge for one car per lodge. Interest in attending the workshop was shown by several members.

We were happy to meet our longtime member Vernon Kunshick and his lovely wife, Gladys, at this meeting. Brother Vernon has recovered completely from the sudden heart attack and emergency bypass surgery he experienced while on their vacation in the northern states. He continues to enjoy good health and we all look forward to seeing them often.

We are also happy to have our Vestnik editor, Brian Vanicek visit our lodge and have him as our guest speaker. During his enthusiastic talk, Brian shared his background with members and his feelings about belonging to the SPJST and its future potential. He also talked about some of the SPJST's financial products.

After the meeting was adjourned, refreshments were served by Alice Prasatik with the assistance of Faye Mares and Doris Boriski.

Rozkvet, No. 172, Pasadena Hosts Note Burning Lodge

Lodge Rozkvet, No. 172, Pasadena celebrated the burning of their mortgage on Sunday, February 14. The event marked the payoff of a 20-year loan for $250,000 from the Supreme Lodge. The note, which was paid off in November, was paid ten years ahead of schedule.

The whole day was like a homecoming. Some of the lodge members, who had moved away, returned to Pasadena to share the day with their brothers and sisters who they had not seen in years. The celebration, which started at 11:30 a.m. with a social, concluded at 5:30 p.m.

Highlights

At 12:30, past Brother President Jerry Dressler called the assembly to attention.

Father Paul Chouanec delivered the meal blessing in both the English and Czech language. Everybody enjoyed the delicious meal of roast beef, sausage, gravy, potato salad, green beans, bread, pastries and tea. The meal was catered by Kresta's of Brazoria, Texas.

At 1:30, dancing started with music by the Henry Tannenberger Band. The band provided a good supply of soft, dance music.

At 2:30, the past president welcome everyone to the Lodge 172 celebration in both the Czech and English language.

He then introduced Brother Alvin Sefcik as master of ceremonies for the program.

Speakers Brother Sefcik introduced the speakers throughout the course of the program. He introduced Brother Victor Peter, Lodge Historian and Sister Lillia Mae Peter. The names of the first set of officers of Lodge No. 172 were read.

Then Brother Peter delivered a brief history of the lodge, beginning with the land purchase, which eventually led to the securing of a $250,000 note to finance construction of the hall.

Brother Sefcik then introduced President Leshikar. President Leshikar extended his wish that all members of Lodge No 172 to continue to do their good work. He said that all of the personnel from the Home Office were proud of Lodge 172 for a job well done.

He then used a rock and a piece of lumber to illustrate what happens when they are put together. He also congratulated Brother Jerry Dressler on being elected the State Fraternalist of the Year for 1992.

Brother Sefcik introduced Vice President Gebala. Brother Gebala congratulated Lodge 172 for their good work and for the growth in membership. Membership in 1982 was 384. As of December 31, 199, this number had increased to approximately 1,000 members. He noted that the average insurance per member now exceeded $3,000 per member.

Brother Gebala continued by reading a letter from Lodge No. 177, Academy, in which they congratulated Lodge 172 for their accomplishments, and expressed their regrets for not being able to personally attend the celebration.

Brother Sefcik then introduced Supreme Lodge Chairman Cyrill and District Three Director (Sid) Pokladnik.

He addressed the group in both the English and Czech language, congratulating

Lodge 172 for its early repayment of its loan.

According to Brother Pokladnik, Brotherhood and Fraternalism works when we join our talents and work together. It makes for progress and it makes for growth.

Brother Sefcik introduced Brother Hanus. The District Five director congratulated the members and said that he was was as happy as they were to see this day of celebration. Brother Hanus helped Lodge 172 get the loan and he helped paint the lodge after it was built.

He saw the bad times and he saw the good times and knows how faithful Lodge 172 members have been in working for the progress of their lodge.

Brother Sefcik then introduced two special guests—Jim and Helen Kilroy, founder of the Mark Kilroy Foundation.

The Kilroys thanked Lodge 172 members and expressed their appreciation for their help and support lodge members offered when their son, Mark, died.

Lodge 172 was the first organization to help raise money to get the Kilroy Foundation started. Every year, the Foundation awards two scholarships, one which goes to the Valley, and the other to Santa Fe, Texas. The Foundation also maintains a drug rehabilitation center in Texas City, Texas for 32 men.

The Kilroys'concluded their remarks by again thanking everybody in SPJST for their help and support and by stating how proud they were of our Society.

One of our other special guests was Dr. Dixie Mellio, from "The Rose."

Due to an emergency call, she had to leave to report to the hospital. Two of her assistants, Anne Belle Bangus and Dorothy Weston, congratulated lodge members and thanked them for their support over the past three years. During that time, through the use of Lodge 172's facilities, The Rose had raised more than $45,000 for their organization, a mammogram center for women.

Note Burning Following the speakers, the time had come to burn the mortgage note. The following past presidents (or spouses) and officers of Lodge 172 participated in the note burning ceremony: Jerry Dressler, Victor Peter Jerry Elleven, Albert Risinger Willie Malak, Alvin Sefcik Margie Berry (standing in for Dan Berry, deceased) Vera Seale (standing in for S. L. Seale, deceased) Tennie Walla: Current President Joe Krenek: Chairman, Board of Trustees With the note burning, Brother Sefcik said that everyone's wish had come true and that members had a hall of their own—and it was all paid for. "Let this be a symbol and let it be known as a `Hall of Fraternal Love,'" he said.

At this point, President Tennie Walla addressed the assembly. She thanked everybody for coming and for their support. She told lodge members that they must continue to grow and to work together in support of the lodge. There are still improvements that need to be done on the lodge hall, including the need for an additional parking lot.

Following her presentation, the band began to, play.

177, Academy Reports on February Meeting

President Otis Beck called the February 10th meeting to order. Following the Pledge of Allegiance, members remained standing in memory of our departed member, Phil Weadock. All officers were present except Vice President Bobby Fritz.

Secretary Kathy Fritz read the minutes of the last meeting. The minutes were approved as read. A letter from Supreme Lodge Vice President Bernie Gebala, thanking our lodge for the use of our hall for the upcoming Local Lodge Workshop on March 13th was also read.

New member John Drew Popelka was voted on accepted by the membership.

All committee reports were also read and approved.

Libbie Bartek reported that a get well card was mailed to Rosie Lee Weadock while she was in the hospital and that a sympathy card was also mailed to Rosie Lee Weadock and family.

FAC J. C. Johnson asked all the members to turn in their fraternal reports for the year 1992 and to keep them up for this year. He also recognized Jean Driska, birthday celebrant in the month of February. Happy birthday, Jean.

Youth Leader Karen Bartek asked the Mother Lodge if Janet Lyons could be her assistant. This was voted on and approved.

In Memoriam Expression of Sympathy We, the members and officers of SPJST Lodge No. 73, Seymour, wish to express our sympathy to the family of our departed sister, TRACY HAJEK, who died Monday, February 8 in her home in Seymour. Rosary was at 8 p.m., Wednesday, February 10 at Seymour Memorial Funeral Home. Mass was at 10 a.m., Thursday, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Seymour with the Rev. Bart Landwermeyer officiating.

Burial was in the S.P.J.S.T. Cemetery.

Mrs. Hajek was born on July 9, 1921, in Westover, Texas. She was raised in Megargel, Texas and moved to Seymour in 1939. She and Jesse Hajek were married on October 19, 1939, in Megargel.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Sacred Heart Altar Society and Ladies Auxiliary of Veterans of World War II. Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Geraldine Kuhler of Seymour and Arlene DeYoung of Bothell, Washington; a son, David, of Seymour; two sisters, Mary Pennartz of Wichita Falls and Clara Urbanovsky of Houston; a brother, Dolph Kovar of Lake Worth, Fla; and eight grandchildren.

Mr. White was born in Lawton, Oklahoma to Lanny Ross and Judith Esther White. He had lived in the Temple area for 24 years and graduated from Temple High School in 1978. He worked at the Mid-Texas Artificial Limb Company.

Rosary was recited at 7 p.m., Wednesday, February 3 at the Mount Olivet Funeral Chapel. The funeral was held on Thursday, February 4 at 11 a.m. at Mount Olivet Funeral Home. Deacon Cliff Greene officiated.

Sister Merlick was a member of the Ladies Circle, American Association of Retired Persons, St. Rita's Garden Club, Senior Citizens Club of East Fort Worth and SPJST Lodge No. 154.

Survivors include a daughter, Betty Brown of Miami; a son, Jerry Lee Merlick of Arlington; two brothers, Rudolph Wruble and Albert Wruble, both of Fort Worth; and two sisters, Elizabeth Gregory of Fort Worth and Frances Bailey of Mount Penn, Pennsylvania; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Smith was born in Mingus to George A. and Maude Alice (Tyson) Hall. She had lived in Temple for 26 years and was a former resident of Pampa. She taught Sunday school at Pampa First Baptist Church and Memorial Baptist Church in Temple. A member of SPJST Lodge No. 47, Seaton and Memorial Baptist Church, she was a past president of the Newcomers Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Smith, in 1977; and two brothers and a sister.

Survivors are a daughter, Alice Marie (McConnell) Banning of Temple; a stepdaughter, Beverly Cairnes of Georgetown; two sisters, Beulah McGlaun of Tulia and Pauline Dreher of Las Cruces, New Mexico; and a brother, H. R. "Buster" Hall of Tulia.

District Youth Counselors Meet to Discuss Summer Activities On Saturday, February 13, the following youth department representative met to discuss and finalize plans for upcoming youth activities: S.L. President Howard Leshikar State Youth Director Joni Lange District I DYC Susan Skrabanek District II DYC Patsy Koslovsky District III DYC Bessie Petr District IV DYC Sandra Jansa District V DYC Marie Stayton District VI DYC Marcy Dorotik District VII DYC Maxine Pavliska During the Youth Leaders' Workshop, scheduled for March 19-21 at Camp Lone Star, youth leaders from across the state will have a final opportunity to review and evaluate a proposed alternative to the current Merit Point System.

Susan Skrabanek's Merit Point Revision Proposal will be submitted to all youth leaders and DYCs for consideration immediately following the Youth Leaders' Workshop.

Preliminary DYC reports indicate that approximately 80 young people are expected to attend this year's LIT Workshop scheduled for June 4-6 at Camp Lone Star. Our goal is to provide our young leaders with an opportunity to develop their leadership skills within an atmosphere conducive to learning and having fun.

Outside temperatures may be falling, but camp attendance appears to be on the rise. We predict that well over 500 youth club members will have earned the privilege to participate in this year's camp activities. For many, it may be their first SPJST camping experience.

The number of youth who participate in State Youth Achievement Day

(SYAD) has steadily increased in recent years. We believed, in order to continue to provide our young people with the kind of support and recognition that they deserve, we would need to make a few adjustments in the SYAD schedule. This year, for the first time, Beseda competition will be held on the same day as the Royalty competition (the Saturday prior to SYAD). We hope that this change will enable the Special Category and Talent competitions to begin earlier; thus allowing for an earlier departure time for those who will be traveling long distances.

Another problem that we have encountered in the past is the beginning of school. Many of our SYAD participants return to school the following day.

Beginning in 1994, SYAD and Royalty will be scheduled for the first full weekend in August. We hope that this move will eliminate the need for families to leave before the conclusion of the program. We, the members of the Youth Department, are constantly looking for ways in which we can improve the quality of programs for our young SPJST members.

What began as a dream for a few visionary leaders has evolved and remained a leading force in business and fraternal organizations throughout the state and the nation. By providing our young people with the opportunity to develop and refine their democratic and creative abilities, we are ensuring the future of the SPJST. We will continue to work together to make SPJST youth clubs your choice now and in the years to come.

Methodist Church in Ganado with the Reverend Paul Lynn officiating. Interment in the Nick and Sally Strauss Family Plot in the Ganado Cemetery followed under the direction of the Ganado Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were Mark Sebolt, Stephan Strauss, III, Albert Strauss, Peter R. Strauss, Nils P. Mauritz, Kelly Janica, Travis Janica, and Terry Jaap.

Sister Strauss was active with the United Methodist Women, and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for more than 60 years. She also loved gardening and was an avid needlepointer.

She will be missed by everyone in Ganado as she had lived here since 1914.

She joined SPJST in 1933 at Wesley Texas where her father organized the lodge when the family moved to a farm south of Ganado. She later transferred to Lodge No. 138.

May our dear. departed sister and dear friend rest in eternal peace and may her memory be with us forever and ever.

Youth Letters Lodge 6, Cottonwood Youth Club Reports on Activities Dear Members and Friends, The Youth meeting was held after the lodge meeting with a fair attendance.

The Youth Club brought cake to the West Rest Home on January 3 and on February 3. Also during the month of February we constructed crafts and had a social. In the future, we will be making Easter baskets for the Rest Home and and for the Youth CLub. On February 12 we had our Valentine's party with hot dogs and goodies.

The youth club members also played games. They all had a good time.

I so want to thank everyone for the gifts and cards on Valentine's Day. They were all nice.

We are still planning on going to the SPJST Museum and to go bowling in the near future.

On April 4, we are going to have our lodge and youth meeting. We will also have an Easter party with an Easter egg hunt, games and a supper. I will write more about the program later.

47, Seaton Youth Club Plans Coming Events Lodge

As the year began with different assistant youth leaders—Sharon Hejl and Tammy. Pechal, and Youth Leader Judy Pechal, we also have some changes in mind for the Youth Club. We hope that these changes will keep the youth enthused about coming out and joining the club.

Our March 7th meeting will begin with a regular meeting. Afterwards, we will (weather permitting) pick up trash.

So members and parents, remember to either wear something old or you may want to change clothes after the meeting.

On Saturday, March 27, we will host our fund raiser. We are planning on having barbecue plates to eat at the hall or plates to go. If you stay at the hall we are hoping to have some games for your enjoyment. Watch for more details and flyers being posted. The public is invited. Parents, your support in helping to get this together will be greatly appreciated.

We would like to welcome our new youth club members April and Randall Marek, children of Mary and Marvin Marek of Rogers. Other family members include Rick, Robby and David.

Congratulations to Thomas Gibson for receiving the Eagle Scout award in January. He is the son of Margaret and Tom Gibson of Temple and the brother of Laura and Daniel Gibson. Also, congratulations to Mark Greger for receiving the Arrow of Light Award on February 23. His parents are Ginger and Bernard Greger of Temple and his sisters are Lori and Lisa Greger. We would like to also say congratulations to all youth club members and to the youth of Lodge 47 who entered the Bell County Youth Fair and Livestock Show. We had several youth place and we are proud of each one of you.

We have also been informed that we have lost some of our youth club members due to lack of interest or personal reasons. Whatever the reason, you will always be remembered as being a great inspiration to the other youth club members. When you feel that the time is right, we will welcome you back into the Youth Club.

Dear Vestnik Readers, The February meeting of Lodge No. 47, Seaton was called to order by President James Kortis at 2:08 p.m. Mark Greger brought in the flag and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and club motto.

There were 30 members present.

Rachel Baca and Joni Lange were visitors. New members were April and Randal Marek.

Minutes from the last meeting were read and stand approved as read.

The treasurer gave his report.

Youth Leader Judy Pechal gave her

order at 7:15 p.m. by President Paul Pflughaupt. Michael Williams led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America. The register was read. There were 30 members and 10 adults present. There were no guests.

This is the largest attendance we have had in recent years.

The minutes were read and there were no corrections or additions. We had no correspondence. Vice President Jill Mattiza gave the treasurer's report in the absence of Melissa Havemann. The committee chairmen then gave their reports.

Our youth leader Barbara Linney gave her report for the month. She informed us about Anniversary Day for Lodge 88. The members then voted to sell candy and plants in a raffle for Anniversary Day. Ms. Linney said that we will have our annual Easter party on April 3, 1993. We then talked about what we were going to do for a social this month. We decided that we would go bowling on the 28th of February.

Then, at the last minute our DYC Marie Stayton offered to take us to see the Harlem Globetrotters at the Summit.

Our plans for bowling were then canceled.

Marie Stayton told the youth about the District Five Spring Meeting. She informed us that new district youth officers will be elected and that it will be hosted here at Lodge 88. Ms. Linney gave out her award for the month to the whole youth club.

We sang Happy Birthday to Chad Barnes, Lisa Farquhar, Holly Hubard, Lindsey Michalak, Paul Pflughaupt, and Michael Williams. On the 25th of February, our Youth Leader, Ms. Linney, will celebrate yet another birthday.

The President adjourned the meeting at 8:45 p.m.

In most of Europe, there was one more holiday at Easter— "Pondeli Velikonoe'ni".— (Easter Monday).

That was the day for gaity. After six weeks of Lent, the time of sacrifice, came Easter Day (Hod Bo2i velikonoeni,) as a day of rejoicing because of Christ's Resurrection, but that still was a day full of deep religious meaning— a solemn day. Adding of another holiday on Monday gave opportunity for more wordly signs of joy. The boys, from toddlers to young unmarried men, were pursuing girls with gaily decorated whips made of young willow branches. The girls could avoid a "whipping" only by offering the fellows fancily-painted Easter eggs. Some were fresh eggs while the more elaborately painted ones were only shells. They were fine examples of folk art. In the Eastern part of the country, the customs called also for practical jokes like pouring of cold water over an unsuspecting victim, etc. It was not unusual to have a dance on Monday just to give an outlet to the vivacity of the people pinned up during Lent.

Another occasion for a celebration is the Namesday or the Birthday. In this country, one's Namesday is rarely celebrated, but in Czechoslovakia, it is put on the same level as the Birthday.

On the days of popular patron saints, such as St. Joseph, St. Wenceslaus (Vaclav) or St. Anna, it is not uncommon to have bands of musicians going from one Joseph's house to another and serenading him. Also dances are often organized on the nearest Saturday and named Josefska, Vacla ska or Annenska zabava. The word "zabava" stands for entertainment, but is often used also to mean dance.
