Society Recognizes Age 96 Members

SPJST congratulates January Top Producers Tanuary insurance produaion exceeds $3 million We're off to a good start. In January, SPJST sales representatives have written $3,116,920 of insurance business.

As you've probably noticed, some names appear quite frequently as "top producers." We certainly appreciate their consistent performance. At the same time, we are proud of our "new" top producers and congratulate them for their performance and their continued success.

Teamwork is a key to our success and we are extremely proud of our sales force.

We are encouraging all of our sales representatives to attend the local lodge workshop to be held at Lodge 177, Academy on Saturday, March 13, 1993. Lau-

rie Moore, who will be our featured speaker, is an outstanding motivator.

I'm sure that if we apply some of the ideas that are generated at this workshop, our SPJST will be the "winner." We look forward to every member who is interested in SPJST to attend this workshop and then return to their lodge and help SPJST to grow and prosper.

In 1993, a total of 19 members born in the year1897 will attain the grand age of 96. As prescribed by Article 49 of our By-Laws, these members will collect the proceeds of their certificate and retain membership in the SPJST with all privileges, and have no further dues or assessments required.

These members, our brothers and sisters in fraternalism, were born in 1897— the same year the SPJST came into existence. Many amazing innovations and changes have occurred since those early days. Whezeas it once took hours, days and even weeks to send messages from one point to another, today, we can send or receive information from most any point in the world in a matter of seconds.

Along with the years of change comes wisdom. And as many of us are beginning to find, the more things change, the more they stay the same.

The life cycle continues. The need for companionship does not diminish, nor does the need for personal growth lessen. These are just two of the reasons that the SPJST exists—to be a home away from home, where members can feel that they are part of a larger support group—an extension of the family unit.

I hope, that as members of the SPJST family, you will join with me in extending your highest regards and best wishes to all of these wonderful people who are celebrating their 96th birthday this year.

New Annuity Program Coming Watch for New Annuity Program It's always a learning experience to visit a lodge where I haven't been before. Last weekend it was Lodge 155, Austin. The meeting, which took place in the comfortable home of Brother Raymond and Sister Alice Prasatik, covered a range of timely issues affecting the Society and its members.

In particular, some interesting questions were raised concerning the Society's proposed new annuity program.

Members will recall that it was reported in the Vestnik in January that the Supreme Lodge had voted to file a new annuity contract with the Texas Insurance Department.

The new contract will change the guaranteed interest rate on annuities from five percent to three and percent changes the withdrawal (without financial penalty phase) from five to seven years. Based on the information at hand, the new annuity plan is likely to go into effect sometime in March.

Once the new annuity plan goes into effect, all new annuity accounts will be subject to the new guidelines.

Please note, however, that if you are participating in the annuity program before the new plan takes effect, the new rules will not apply to you. You will be able to continue to making contributions to your annuity account, subject to the old rules and guidelines.

Interest rates for both the existing annuity program and the new program will be reviewed in the March Supreme Lodge meeting. Rates for the two plans may not be the same, due to differing risk factors. Because the new plan will be subject to a more lengthy "withdrawal without penalty phase," it is likely that the Society may offer a higher rate of interest on the new annuity program.

According to Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska, the new annuity guidelines were adopted to help ensure the long-term financial stability of the annuity program.

"We're a very conservative organization when it comes to taking risks with our members' money," Brother Mikeska says, "Certainly, we want to maximize our members returns on their investments; however, we also work hard to avoid exposing any part of our portfolio to extraordinary risks.

"In the event of an unforeseen shift in the financial marketplace, the lower minimum guarantee rate is an additional tool that we would be able to use to help ensure the liquidity of our members' investments and the financial integrity of our annuity program."

More detailed information on the new annuity program will appear in forthcoming issues of the Vestnik.

You're Invited to the Workshop Over the past three weeks ever since we started running the standing announcement for the Local Lodge Workshop, I've heard at least half a dozen people, in casual conversation, refer to it as the "Lodge Officers Workshop." That needs a little clarification.

Certainly, lodge officers are expected to participate in this annual exercise in team building and goal-setting. However, don't get the idea that this workshop is for officers only. It is for all members who want to build more active lodges and a stronger SPJST. If this sounds like you, plan to be at Lodge 177, Academy on Saturday, March 13.

For some of you, attending the spring lodge workshop may be a new experience.

Don't let that keep you away. As long as you have a sincere desire to make your organization-the SPJST-the best that it can be, you'll fit in. The workshop will include morning and afternoon sessions by motivational speaker and planning specialist Laurie Moore. A free barbecue luncheon will also be served to work-hop participants.

If you would like to attend, please let your local lodge president know promptly. Lodge presidents have been advised to send in the names of all those who will be attending the workshop from their lodge by March 1. *** Just How Much is "Enough"?

How much life insurance is "enough?" I asked this question to our State Field Manager Gene McBride this past week. I'll share his thought-provoking response with you.

From a purely material standpoint, Brother McBride said, every person who is working may be compared to a machine which produces a certain amount of annual income for its owner.

"Assuming that machine is you, take your current age and subtract it from age 65. Multiply that number by your annual income. If your machine is put out of commission, that is roughly the amount of income that will be lost to your dependents," he explained.

This is an oversimplified formula and it may not always apply, Brother McBride acknowledges,; however, it does illustrate the importance of having a reasonable amount of life insurance coverage in force.

When an SPJST sales representative offers life insurance to any prospective or current SPJST member, he offers that individual an opportunity to help him protect his earning power which may be wiped away by death or by the passing of years. For detailed information on the many fraternal insurance and financial products available through SPJST, contact your local lodge sales representative.

State Tarok Tournament This Saturday at Lodge 66, Waco - Linden Hall V • + February 20, 1993 fikb The State Tarok Tournament will be held at Linden Hall in Waco, Texas on February 20, 1993. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. with play scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.. The noon meal will be catered by Michna's Barbecue out of Waco.

Directions Linden Hall is located seven miles north of Waco, just off of Interstate 35take the Elm Mott Exit.

From the South If you are coming from the South, take the Elm Mott exit and go to the first blinking red light and turn right. You will go across a railroad track. Continue on this road one-half mile. A big sign on the right will direct you to Linden Hall.

From the North If you are coming from the North, take the Eim Mott Exit to the first blinking red light. Turn left, under Interstate 35, and continue straight ahead. We would like to encourage all of our players to teach at least two friends how to play Taroks in 1993. If they're not members, get them to join! Then in '94, bring them with you to win the trophy!

The monthly meeting of Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood was held on February 7, 1993. A meal was served prior to the meeting. Our thanks to everyone who helped.

The meeting was called to order by President Johnnie Krizan. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Tammi, Tracy and Celia Dobecka.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. We had 17 members and two guests: Ester Malina and Candice Bromhall. The $5 attendance prize was won by Bobby Dobecka and Linda Sulak's name was drawn for the $5 progressive door prize. She was not present.

Lodge 24, Cyclone Encourages Members to Get Involved Dear Members, First of all, let this serve as a standing invitation to all members of Lodge 24 members to get involved in 1993. Getting involved doesn't mean giving all your free time to Lodge 24—just a couple of hours every now and then. Our regular meetings are on the second Monday evening of every month. They start at 7 p.m. and usually last no more than a couple of hours.

Take our February 8th meeting for example. President Carol Chervenka called the meeting to order promptly at 7 p.m. Following the Pledge of Allegiance, time was given to regular rituals, including a moment of silence for our departed members and an acknowledgment of all our members on the sick list and of all of those who have passed away since the previous meeting. I am happy to report this month there were no members on either of these two lists.

Lodge Secretary Arlene Mayeux then proceeded with the reading of the minutes from the January meeting, which were approved as read. She also read the names of 21 local lodge members who will be receiving their 50-year pins in 1993 and the name of Olga Stepan, who had achieved the age of 96. Later in the meeting, we decided that these members would be formally recognized at a special lodge function later this year.

Chairmen of the Standing Committee and Board of Trustees also delivered their reports.

In new business, Treasurer Margaret Mikeska addressed the subject of the lodge's liability insurance. After considerable discussion, it was decided to switch carriers.

In other new business, several upcoming lodge events were discussed—most notably the upcoming Polka Festival scheduled for April 23, 24, and 25; the Mother's Day Barbecue, scheduled for May 9; and the Countywide Garage Sale, date still pending.

With regards to the Polka Festival, President Chervenka presented members with a good outline of how the three-day event will be presented. This will be a major project for our lodge and will require a lot of help from our members.

Please be aware, some of you may be receiving phone calls to help make this big event a success. If you do not receive a telephone call, please don't feel that you've been left out intentionally. There are approximately 800 names on the Lodge 24 membership roster. If you would like to volunteer to help out with any of the upcoming events—or perhaps provide some baked goods for the functions, please contact our Fraternal Activities Coordinator Louise Zavodny at 985-2556. She would love to hear from you.

In other new business, Brother Billy Smetanka encouraged members to spread the word and participate in the upcoming Lodge 24 "straight" domino and "42" domino playoffs. As all of you know, it takes a lot of care and attention and care to keep our lodge hall looking good. All members are invited and encouraged to come out Saturday morning, February 27, for a

Lodge Work Day, during which time we will clean up, fix up, and paint up whatever needs it. Remember, you don't have to commit a whole day to this activity—just two or three hours will do.

We'll be getting started at about 8 a.m. and will be going strong at least through lunch time. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. Again, if you can make it, please come out and lend a hand.

President Chervenka announced that this coming Saturday, February 20th, Lodge 24 would be hosting a non-alcoholic young people's dance from 8 until 12 p.m. Music will be by a popular area disc jockey. "Officially," it has been billed as a "teen dance," but all are invited to attend and have a good time.

President Chervenka concluded her report by announcing the various committee appointments for 1993. Following the meeting, five members names were drawn for the door prizes which were five boxes of Valentine's Day candy, donated by the reporter (even at that, he still couldn't win a door prize).

Lodge 88, Houston Reports on Member News Evelyn Mikolas is beaming with joy over the birth of her great-nephew, Matthew Harrison Craven in Dallas.

Evelyn and her brother, J. D. Baethe recently attended the funeral of their cousin Wallace Wollgast in Waller,

Texas. They also visited their aunt, Edna Baethe in the McNeil House while there.

They have since received word that their aunt, Mamie Baethe, in Palestine, Texas had died.

Mrs. Frank (Frances) Dvorak's birthday will be on February 25th. Send her a card at 1010 Thistlewood, Norman, Oklahoma 73072. All of us who know her have agree that she's a wonderful person—always consoling and never criticizes anyone. Her husband, Mr. Frank, was a great artist. There are many of his paintings hanging in our Lodge 88 hall and some in my house and with the Kostoms. Mr. Frank was also Mrs. Frances Olexa's brother. Mrs. Olexa's sons, Irvin and Henry, also paint beautifully. "It spilled over, didn't it?"

187, Round Rock Reports on Christmas Party Lodge

Good food and good people make for a good time.

Lodge No. 187, Round Rock hosted its annual Christmas Party on December 20, 1992. First, Albert Lange called the meeting to order and then he welcomed all guests, including Willie and Adeline Kohutek.

Wilbert Nelson, chairman of the nomination committee, nominated Albert Lange president; Gene Landry, vice president; Rubie Volek, treasurer; Joan Boydston, financial secretary; Deborah Rohlack, secretary; and Sharon Holman, youth director. He also nominated Henry Wobus to be reelected. New directors to be nominated were Chris Beeson, Cyndi Gibson and John Noles. Red Oman moved that the nominations cease. Neal Boydston seconded. Red moved that all nominees be elected by acclamation.

Allene Leschber seconded the motion.

The motion carried.

200, Eddy Reports on Meeting Lodge

The regular business meeting for Lodge 200, Eddy, Texas was held on Wednesday, February 3, 1993 at 6:30 p.m. in the Bruceville-Eddy City Hall.

The meeting was opened by President Bob Miracle with the Pledge of Allegiance.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved as corrected.

Under old business, Gene reported that the lodge's membership and insurance quota is 39 members and $588,237 in insurance. This ought to be an easy goal for three super insurance representatives like Bob Miracle, Gene McBride and George Pavelka. However, don't stop at 39. The lodge is committed to 200 members by 1994.

Sandra Gatewood reported that the lodge received their refunds and that she would be depositing the funds into the general account. The Football Committee chaired by Harvey LaFlamme reported that the lodge received $100 after their first attempt. Great job, Harvey. We'll build that hall soon if you keep this up.

Last, under old business, the lodge decided to move the date for the Scholarship Fund Raiser to April 16, 1993. This will give us more time to get the necessary advertising out. Mark your calendars! The fish fry with all the trimmings will be held at the Old Eddy Fire Station (under the water tower). The time will be 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on April 16, 1993.

The price will be $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under. Bring friends, relatives and anyone interested in helping the youth of the community receive an education.

Now, under new business, the lodge decided that it is time for a social. At our next meeting on Wednesday, March 3, 1993, Harvey LaFlamme will be cooking Turkey a la King. Come out and enjoy.

Harvey likes to cook as long as someone comes out to eat it. The social will begin at 7 p.m. at the Old Eddy Fire Station. A 50-year membership pin will be presented to Edith Bruce of Granger, Texas at the social. Isn't that fantastic! It is a pleasure to present awards to SPJST members who have shown that much support over the years. "Congratulations," Edith! Members, don't forget to bring prospective members. Invite them, bring them out, and let them see fraternalism at work. At this time, Gene McBride said that if the three insurance representatives divided the insurance quota, they would have to each get 13 members and $196,079.00 in insurance.

Wrong! The lodge expects 39 new members from each of you.

President Bob Miracle announced that a local lodge workshop will be held at Academy Lodge No. 177 on March 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The program will

be presented by Laurie Moore. The following officers and members have committed themselves to attending: Gene and Francis McBride, Bob Miracle, Sandra and Mark Gatewood, and Earl and Mary Soudelier.

Gene McBride announced that Keith Gatewood would bring up to the Board of Directors of Lodge 66 a volleyball and horseshoe pitch challenge from Lodge 200. Everyone was enthusiastic and was saying bring them on, we can take them this time. Seriously, this would be a fun day and support fraternalism between the local lodges.

Gene McBride then asked if the lodge would vote on allowing him to be counted at the lodge meeting when he is on SPJST business and this was passed unanimously. Gene then announced that SPJST was coming out with a new annuity program. The guaranteed interest rate would be three percent and the penalty for early withdrawal is for seven years.

Interest rates will be higher that the old program. Gene then reported that the interest rate on annuities was at 6.25 percent and universal life was 7 percent.

Gene also reminded everyone that the Quick Start II Program starts on February 22, 1993 and will last from eight to ten weeks. The meetings will be held at the Home Office on Tuesdays, beginning at 6 p.m.

Circle of Czech Women Report on Meeting Dallas

Our February meeting was called to order by President Bertha Podhrasky.

Esther Cunningham led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and we remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our Sister Frances Konakovsky. She had been a long time member.

Bertha welcomed 33 members this New Year and 12 male guests. It was good to see Rose Kopecek and some of the members who have been absent Correspondence was read by Evelyn Trojacek. This included a "Thank You" card from the Veterans Hospital for the donation in memory of Marie Toberney and a "Thank You" card from Bessie Reames.

From the Sunshine Committee, Liddie Pavelka sent "Thinking of You" cards to Lillian Kaska, Bessie Reames, Stacy Athas, Faye Wright, and Agnes Mach.

A "Sympathy" card was sent to Sister Konakovsky's niece, Alice Kopecky in Taylor, Texas.

A "Thank You" card was sent to Bessie Reames for the money gift that she donated to the Krouzek.

The members signed "Thinking of You" cards and which will be sent to Stacy Athas, Martha Kocian, Anne Zvolanek, and Alice Roberts.

A "Thinking of You" card was also sent to Helen Koubek, who had eye surgery.

From the Sunshine Committee, Libbie Elsik sent "Get Well" cards to Stanley Patak, Vicki Kohn, and Martha Kocian with a money gift to Martha.

Bessie Reames asked to be relieved of recording secretary duties because-of ill health. Dorothy Reznik volunteered to be recording secretary until August.

Wanda Petr will take over in August until March.

The By-Laws Committee presented their changes on the By-Laws. The changes were read to the members and voted on.

News of Members Bertha Malik took her family on a Christmas cruise to the Mexican Riviera. She really enjoyed the cruise.

Rose Kopecek said to thank everyone for the Christmas and get well cards.

Bessie Reames said to thank everyone for her get well cards.

Helen Oates gave a report on the Sister City of Brno. The Sister Committee gave the check for the monies we collected at Christmas to S.M.U. Student Exchange. A money-raising dinner for the exchange students will be held April 4, 1993 at Sokol. More on this next month.

The next meeting of the Fraternal Council will be on February 8, 1993 with SPJST Lodge No. 84 hosting.

Sid Pokladnik gave a report on the Czech Chair at the University of Texas.

He thanked us for our donation and said that the chair donations had reached one million dollars.

A "thank you" to Justine Pokladnik for representing the Krouzek at the Czech Education Committee meeting.

Chorus Sings Songs from the Old Country Czech

Among the many people who contribute time and talents to the residents of the Taylor S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1 is a group that began in 1968 at the facility.

It was during the winter of 1968 that a group of people met at the Home with the single-minded purpose of preserving the heritage of Czech music. From this first meeting, the Taylor Czech Chorus came into existence to aid members in maintaining their use of the language while providing enjoyment for themselves and for their audiences.

The chorus is composed of interested people from the Williamson County area. Practice sessions are held every second and fourth Thursday of the month, primarily at the SPJST Rest Home.

Diane Volek serves as pianist. Officers include Catherine Holubec, president, and Edith Remmel, secretary-treasurer.

In the time that the group has been together, they have made annual appearances at Taylor's local "History Day s," Fiesta Gardens Czech Fest in Austin, the Smithville Jamboree, and Czech fests in New Braunfels and Houston, Texas. They've also provided entertainment at Old Settlers and SPJST events and hundreds of local area events throughout the years.

Lending their voices to the chorus are Leona Stalmach, Catherine Holubec, Lillian Kasper, Martin Ladewig, Rose David, Alice Kovar, Edith Remmel, Mary Ann Stauffer, Martha Bruckner, Trudie Kincl, Alma Kouze, Beatrice Janecka, Christine Kubala, Mary Marak and Frances Kincl.

Congratulations to Stephanie Roye, who won the title of Sr. Miss Talent and placed as first runner-up in the beauty category at the 1993 Junior Miss Texas Rodeo Pageant held at the Marriott North at Greenspoint in Houston on February 5th and 6th. Stephanie is a member of Lodge No. 30, Taiton.

Stephanie performed a lyrical dance to "Bird on a Wire" before a panel of judges including two producers from the nationally televised talent search program "Star Search" and "Be a Star."

She received a beautiful German silver and gold overlay buckle with inlaid rubies designed especially for the Junior Miss Texas Rodeo Pageant, a customdesigned satin dress banner, a beautiful gold-dipped Texas hat crown and a satin jacket.

She will be attending a special seminar on open calls with agents, runway model and talent auditions and prepare a package (resume and video) to be presented to top producers. She is also scheduled to ride in the grand entry during the televised Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Parade on February 20.

The Zavodny's are blessed with five children: Leon George Zavodny, Jr., Elaine Hoelscher, Theresa Zavodny, Jodie Zavodny and Eldon Zavodny.

They also have four grandchildren.

She was nominated for the Presidential Award in excellence in science and math and is a member of the National Science Teacher Association; Texas Science Teachers, Kappa Delta Pi—the honor society in education, membership earned through academic accomplishments, education leadership and exemplification of worthy educational ideals.

She graduated with a GPA of 3.9.

Jennifer is presently 'going into her ninth year as a science teacher at St. Michael's Private School in Houston.

Features An Open Letter From the Association of Natives and Friends of Cermna Dear friends n the U.S.A., We turn on descendants of Czech emigrants in the U.S.A., on their families from Cermna and its surrounding—East Bohemia, especially on the families of Du'g ek, Coufal, Heil, Haizler, Mod, Marek, Leg ikar, and Silar, on The Czech Heritage Society as well, on the editors office of the Czech magazine Hospodar and similar institutions.

A lot of Czech families from Cermna and its surrounding area left for the U.S.A.—especially for Texas. Josef Lidumil Lesikar, especially, was a leader of a big campaign to the U.S.A. in 1853.

On July 4th and 5th, 1993, to mark the 140th anniversary of the campaign, we want to commemorate this meaningful man who left Cermna-Nepmuky. On the house in which he lived, we want to unveil a plaque with this inscription: Joseph Lidumil Lesikar, awakener of this region, pressed by offices, lived in this house since 1820. He left for liberty for America in 1853. He died in Texas in 1887.

In 1988, a book was issued in Texas titled "Memorabilia Josef Lidumil Lesikar and Family, " compiled and privately printed in 1988 by Frances M. Duncan of Houston, Texas. The book is about 500 pages long.

The Association of Natives and friends of Cermna invites all descendants to take part in this celebration. We also invite all friends and descendants from our locality to become members of our association and support our work. People in the U.S.A. who can speak Czech or who learn the language of their ancestors, can order our magazine "Cermensk Zpravodaj." They can find interesting news and some facts about history in it.

Thus Meeiar and Klaus have sacrificed Czechoslovakia to advance their own careers and political programs. The breakup in no way illustrates the fulfillment of any type of democratic process.

The Slovak and Czech press played the ignoble role of irresponsibly intensifying the conflict. The papers have labeled the Slovaks fascists and the Czechs godless communists. Slovaks have been reminded daily of Prague's long decades of neglect. The Czech press has suggested that Czechs are better off without the Slovaks. Czech readers were told about a mythical group of evil Canadian millionaires who secretly plotted Slovak secession.

Czechs, who typically know little or nothing about Slovak history, can only believe what they read in their papers.

Yet it seems that most people remain opposed to the split. In eastern Slovakia, the population fears that the government in Bratislava in western Slovakia will ignore the needs of the rest of the country. Rusnaks (Ruthenians) in the east and Magyars (Hungarians) in the south fear discrimination. It seems likely that Me6ar's government, which is already limiting press freedoms, will restrict the rights of non-Slovaks.

Many families have relatives living across what is now an international border. It remains to be seen whether the rights of families to maintain contacts can be guaranteed under the new political situation. The split has ben particularly painful for those along the Moravian-Slovak border. In many places, this border, which is more a line drawn on maps than a true boundary of any type, was established only in recent centuries. Otherwise, the Moravians and Slovaks here speak the same dialect and share the same folk culture. In this sense, the population of eastern Moravia is closer to Slovakia than to distant Prague.

An acquaintance who lives not far from the Slovak border told me that he believes that eventually there will be some type of rapprochement. It is quite natural, after all, given the geographic and economic facts of life, that Czechs, Moravians, and Slovaks should live together in some type of political alliance. While Slovakia was never before treated as an equal partner in the federation, perhaps a brief period of separation could pave the way for the creation of a new and more equitable partnership. So long as the separation remains peaceful—even though certainly it is costly and annoying—there remains the chance that someday a new political union will arise. As they have shown the world recently, Czechs and Slovaks still have a long way to go before they will have a democratic society. Let us hope, however, that the recent disappointments will not dissuade them from striving in the future towards the goal of democracy.

In Memoriam Resolution of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge Karnes No. 93, Hobson, Texas, in behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother

AUGUST W. SHORTNER of Karnes City, Texas, who died on September 29, 1992 in Otto Kaiser Memorial Hospital. He was 78 years, one month, and 8 days of age.

He was born on August 21, 1914 to Jacob and Anna Linhart Shortner at Hobson, Texas and lived his entire life in the vicinity of, and in Karnes City, Texas.

He was married to Emma Lorine Merecka in Floresville, Texas, on May 11, 1948. They made their home in Karnes City where August worked as a welder for Prasek Machine Shop for a number of years. He then accepted employment

by the City of Karnes City and remained at that position for 26 years until his retirement in 1979. He was a member of SPJST, a World War II veteran, and a member of the Karnes City Volunteer Fire Department.

Brother Shortner was a lifelong member of Lodge No. 93. He served his lodge as financial secretary for 28 years, offered his home as our meeting place for 24 years, and served willingly and competently in every way that he could to help his lodge and the SPJST. A four-year army veteran, he served overseas in the North African Campaign

where he was wounded and awarded the Purple Heart. When asked years later about the "Desert Fox," he replied, "No, I didn't catch him, but the rest of us drove him out of Africa."

He is survived by his wife, Emma Shortner of Karnes City; son William (Debbie) Shortner of Kenedy; three daughters, Margie (Fred) Redkey of Port Arthur, Cathy (Bobbie) Binney of Harlingen, and Barbara (Ronald) Wiatrek of Stockdale; four sisters, Elgi Broz, Bessie Becker, and Lily Schramek, all of Victoria, and Viola Luttrell of Brady; and eleven grandchildren.

was a great handy lady (tended to the painting inside and out, plus other repair jobs); and was also the financial manager (handled all the bills and record keeping). She was a very giving person and was always willing to help someone in need and, therefore, she touched the lives of many. She was a very special lady (a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, aunt, and a friend to many) and the heart of our family.

We appreciate everything our family and friends did in honor and remembrance of our mother, Betty L. Hlavaty.

Thank you for all the prayers, hospital/home visits, telephone calls, flowers, cards, masses, memorials, food, and support. She is missed very much by all of us and her memory will live on forever in our hearts.

Betty L. Hlavaty passed away on Sunday, December 27, 1992, in an arlington hospital following a battle with colon/liver cancer, at the age of 58 (all of her family were at her bedside). She is survived by her husband, Bernard J. Hlavaty, Sr. of Arlington; son, Bernard J. Hlavaty, Jr. of West; three daughters: Diane Schneider of Hamilton, Nancy Ivy and Karen Svacek, both of West. Three grandchildren: Stephanie McDaniel of Hamilton, Wayne and Kevin Hlavaty of West. Mother, Louise Lucian of Dallas; brother, Bobby Lucian of Dallas; three sisters: Shirley Hennig of Dallas, Jeannie Mikuda and Sandi Hooks of Mesquite, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Joe Lucian of Dallas, and her son, Gary Wayne Hlavaty of Arlington.

Rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, December 29 in Moore Funeral Home Chapel. The mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Saint Matthew Catholic Church in Arlington by Rev. Richard Judge as celebrant, on Wednesday, December 30, 1992, at 10 a.m.

Burial followed in Moore Memorial Gardens in Arlington. The following Arlington Police Department honor guards, led in command by Sgt. James Laman, served as pallbearers: Charles E. Wallace, Randall C. Brigs, J. D. Collie, Steve Hall, Richard Tice and Troy Medina Betty L. (Lucian) Hlavaty was born on September 23, 1934 to Joe and Louise Lucian in Tours, Texas. She married Bernard J. Hlavaty on July 28, 1951 at Abbott, Texas (married 41 years). She lived in Arlington, Texas for 39 years and retired in 1990 from Texas Instruments in Dallas after 31 1/2 years of employment (worked in the Photo Mask Department). She was a member of Saint Matthew Catholic Church in Arlington. She was one of the charter members of SPJST Lodge 183 in Arlington and served, in the past, as a reporter.

Mother's number one love was her family. she also loved to crochet (she had a special touch) making numerous beautiful and cherished doilies, afghans, and other items that she shared with her family and friends. She enjoyed sewing, many other handcrafts, baking, and cooking. Her family always looked forward to the family get-togethers to sample her delicious dishes. Her friends, with whom she worked, looked forward to her homemade apricot cakes, cookies, etc. that she shared with them on .the lunch spreads. She also enjoyed dancing polkas, waltzes, etc; flowe r gardening;

Brother Vrla was born on June 28, 1905, the son of Charlie and Josie Jelinek Vrla. On November 27, 1928, he married Mary Patril. He was a farmer in the Bardwell area all of his life.

Brother Vrla was a member of the St. John Catholic Church, SPJST Lodge No. 135, and Sokol in Ennis. He is survived by his wife, Mary; three daughters, Mrs. Charles Kosarek of Arlington; Miss Libbie Vrla of Ft. Worth, and Mrs. Pete Morales of Ennis; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial for Brother Vrla was held Monday, February 1st at 10 a.m. in the St. John Catholic Church with Fr. J. Douglas Deshotel officiating.

INterment followed in St. Joseph Cemetery with grandsons, William Kosarek, Michael Kosarek, John David Kosarek, Steven Kosarek, Trenton Morales, Clinton Morales, and Troy Morales serving as pallbearers under direction of the Lawrence Funeral Home.

Expression of Sympathy We, the officers of SPJST Lodge No. 9, Snook, on behalf of the entire membership, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed Brother, LEO FAUST, who died on December 28, 1992 at a Bryan residence. He was born in Snook on April 7, 1936 and lived almost all his life in Snook. He was the son of Frank and Francis Maresh Faust. Brother Faust received his education in the Snook School and on February 4, 1984 married Tammy Paulson in Snook. He was a farm equipment operator for Jayson Wendler. He was also a member of the Snook Brethren Church and SPJST Lodge No. 9, Snook Funeral service were held on Wednesday, December 30, 1992, at 2 p.m. at Strickland Funeral Home of Caldwell.

The Rev. Joseph Polasek and Rev. Henry Beseda officiated. Interment followed in the New Tabor Cemetery near Caldwell.

Ma Faust was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Alvin and Ed Faust. Survivors include Tammy Faust of Bryan; a daughter, Mary, of Bryan; four sons, Billy, Jessie, Jeremy, and L. V., all of Bryan; one grandson, james Wright, of Bryan; two sisters, Dorothy Wieha of San Angelo and Judy and husband, Mack Pettinger of Tacoma, Washington; three brothers, Franklin and wife Lupe Faust of Beaver Creek, Moody and Lydia Mae Faust of Snook and Marvin and Kathy Faust of Lyons; and two sisters-in-law, Margie and Nancy Faust of Somerville Pallbearers were Billy Faust, Bruce Faust, Howard Faust, James Faust, Arthur Goodman, Tony Kunkel, Fred Moreland, Robert Pulson and Jason Wendler.

Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 177, Academy, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest and sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother, PHILIP WEADOCK, who passed away on Wednesday, February 3, 1993 in a Temple hospital at the age of 76.

Mr. Weadock was born in St. Mary's, Ohio to Mr. and Mrs. John Weadock. He had lived in the Temple area since 1963.

He worked for the Rockwool plant in Belton. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, the Moose Lodge, SPJST Lodge No. 177, Academy, and the Central Texas Sportsmen's Club. He married Rosa Lee Sell in 1968.

Survivors include his wife, Rosa Lee Weadock of Temple; one son, Patrick L. Weadock of Temple; one daughter, Inez Ankerman of Melbourne, Florida; three stepdaughters, Twila Hamel of Houston, Iris Rose Adams of Dallas and Vicky Griffith of Moody; two stepsons, Allen Lueck, Jr. of Temple and Terry Lueck of Waco; one brother, John Weadock of St. Mary's Ohio; one sister, Martha Kohlhorst of St. Mary's, Ohio; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildrenz , and 26 step grandchildren.

Funeral service were held on Saturday, February 6, 1993 at 10 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church of Temple with the Rev. Steve Henze and the Rev. Alan Struckmeyer officiating.

Burial was at Greathouse Cemetery with Sheffield Funeral Home in charge.

Services for Edith Kadera, age 87, of Guy, Texas were held on December 16, 1992 at St. Paul's Presbyterian Church of Needville, with Rev. Richard Avery officiating under the direction of GormanyCondon Funeral Home.

Sister Kadera, who was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 114, Fairchilds, died at her home on December 14, 1992 after a long illness.

She was born in Milam County and married John F. Kadera on December 15, 1931. They resided in the NeedvilleGuy community for the past 40 years.

Sister Kadra is survived by her husband, John F. Kadera of Guy, Texas; one sister, Della Batla of Temple, Texas; one half-sister, Hilda Dobrava of Rosenberg, Texas; one brother, Emil Jezek of Rosenberg; and several nieces and nephews.

SPJST Supreme Lodge Members Accept Apponitments to TPMA Supreme Lodge Vice President Bernard "Bernie" Gebala, of Temple, and District Six Director Matt Vanek,of Victoria, have both accepted nominations to serve on the Texas Polka Music Association Advisory Board.

The two join the prestigious organization with the likes of Mr. Leroy Muehlsten, Laddie Matula, George Kodelka, Dr. Joseph Jachimczyk, Michael Betz and several other prominent civic and business leaders from across the state.

"We are excited to have Gebala and Vanek with us, providing guidance to the organization," says Julius Tupa, TPMA executive director.

"Momentum is growing across the state at a rapid pace as we prepare for the Third Annual Texas Polka Music Awards Festival." Each March, the TPMA recognizes the top polka musicians from across the state, as determined by balloting," states Tupa Both Gebala and Vanek are well

known through their positions in the SPJST and as polka enthusiasts. For several years, Gebala hosted the "Czech Melody Hour," a Sunday music show on the KTEM-1400 radio in Temple. In addition to being a strong polka booster in the South Texas region, Vanek is also father to the musicians that together make up the Vanek Brothers Polka Band.

Tupa notes that with the help of Gebala and Vanek, the TPMA's ability to recognize the musicians, and the value of our ethnic heritage and diverse cultures dramatically improves.

The Third Annual Texas Polka Music and Awards Festival will take place in Rosenberg, Texas March 12-14, 1993.

More than 25 bands will be performing over the three-day weekend celebration.

Czech Heritage Festival Februar y 27 in Corpus Christi

Annual

The Ninth Annual Czech Heritage Festival, sponsored by the Czech Heritage Society of South Texas, is scheduled for Saturday, February 27, 1993 at Memorial Coliseum in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Confirmed for the occasion is all-daylong dancing to predominantly polka and waltz music: The Tony Janak Orchestra of Yoakum will play from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

The Majek Orchestra of Corpus Christi will play from 2 until 6 p.m.

The Vrazels Polka Band of Cameron is scheduled from 6 to 10 p.m.

A Youth Polka and Waltz Contest will be held again this year. Dance couples under 20 years of age will compete for cash prizes. All young people in the teenage range are encouraged to participate and may register upon arrival at the door. The contest will be held at 2 p.m.

Booths of various sorts will be locat-

ed in the coliseum concourse and will offer Czech imports, arts and crafts, Czech records, tapes and cassettes, novelties, Czech food and,of course, the famous Czech kolaches and other pastries. An accordionist will provide lively music in the concourse area while festival goers browse.

There will also be a prize drawing held at 8:30 p.m. You need not be present to win.

A general admission donation of $5 per person will admit adults into the festival. Children under the age of 12 are free.

It is not necessary to add an equivalent of "you", but it could be done and it is often done. Then, it is "dekuji ti" when we are close to the person addressed, or "dekuji Vam" if the relation to the person addressed is more formal.

The most common reply to the word "dekuji" is the word "prosim".

"Rad° se stalo" and "neni zae" is used similar to "I was glad to do it," or "don't mention it," in this country.

Dovolte prosim — with your permission, (please) pardon me, (please) odpust'te (prosim) — excuse me, (please) promirite (prosim) — I am sorry— pardon me nic se nestalo — it was nothing The word "prosim" is the most common courtesy word. The original is, "I beg you" and only from the context can you tell whether the word "prosim" means "I beg you" or whether it serves as "please".

"Prosim", shown above in parenthesis, because its use is optional, making it more polite.

The words "odpust'te" and "promirite" mean practically the same. The informal address would be "promiri" and "odpust" to be used only with those persons with whom you are on a "thou" basis. The "thou" and "you" basis sounds archaic in English, but there is an important difference in the relation between persons whom we address "thou" — in Czech "ty" — (the verb "tykati si"), and persons we address "you" — in Czech "vy" — and, therefore, the verb describing the relation is "vykati si."

The English "I am sorry" in Czech means "Je mi lito" (or "Ja lituji").

The Czech phrase is used in the same sense as the original meaning of "I am sorry", but generally, we can say that "Je mi lito" is used much more sparingly than "I am sorry". The latter can often be translated "odpust'te" or "promifite".

It is very common to wish your guests "dobre chutnani" as they are sitting ready to eat. The same wish is sometimes used among members of the family as they start with their meal.

The literal translation is "good appetite". This wish is very common on the Continent — in French, German, and practically all Continental language.
